Spelendid stadium, especially for a Winters Olympic. If Sochi gets it, this will bring BC Place to shame for sure. What's the capacity?

Olympic Stadium—Opening and
Closing Ceremonies
The Sochi Olympic Stadium design was inspired by Russia’s
famous Faberge Egg. Located at the Black Sea coast, the
stadium walls and roof are one continuous glass surface
that reflects the brilliant sunlight off the sea during the day.
The intimate seating bowl opens to the north, allowing for a
breathtaking view of the Krasnaya Polyana Mountains, and the
upper deck is open to the south, allowing for a dramatic view
of the Black Sea. The stadium features 40,000 seats, all under
cover, and 60 luxury suites. The stadium will serve as a training
centre and venue for the Russian Football National Team after the
2014 Games. All athlete and technical official functions, including
entries are located on the same level as the field of play.

In the wonderful nation of former U.S.S.R. Anyways, I thought the stadium would have a bigger capacity than 40k. It reminds of the London Olympic Stadium sans ugly leaf protrusions. If they win, Vancouver might as well just blow up BC Place and have the ceremony on an open parking lot in Downtown Eastside. Same difference.

Its time for Russia in 2014. Such a powerful Winter Olympic nation to have never hosted. It's a good chance for Russia to show its new face. It is a different country to the one that hosted the 1980 Olympics.

If Vancouver 2010 is the "Sydney 2000" of the Winter Olympics, then Sochi 2014 is the "Beijing 2008"

I really don't care a thing about a Winter Olympic stadium. In Summer Olympics, much more often takes place within the stadium. Here, people march in and march out, you don't need flair. The Salt Lake City ceremonies were held in a 46,000 capacity college football stadium with no fancy glass rooves or glamour. Worked fine.

According to the bid index, Salzburg is ahead of the other candidate cities followed by the others. Strange isn't it but hasn't Austria already hosted the winter olympiad twice? :dunno: Oh well, personally, the olympics (winter or summer) need to be restricted to being held in first world, developed, democracies which basically means that only the northern hemisphere (except for Australia) and only North America, Western Europe, and In East Asia (South Korea, Japan). I mean no athlete want to come to compete in a nation where they have to endure the sight of starving beggers eating insects. :ohno:

Dont just look at the number of seats, that stadium would have the capability to host a great olympicsevent. Of course infrastructure is important to.

Davidkunz:

Exaggerated? No way, modern, even futuristic. I guess they will use it for track and field events and training after the olympics, which will probably stimulate their athleticsinterest and youthtraining with teh facilities.

What would the level of development of the Russian ski industry have to do with Sochi 2014? I hope you're not suggesting that Russia isn't capable of installing a ski lift. Russia may not be as wealthy as some other nations, but this is a nation that puts cosmonauts in orbit. They're a very capable nation.

Russian guys, I heard that Sochi main stadium will be turned into football stadium after the games. Do you have any renderings for the football configuration of the stadium?

And some other questions.
1) Will the football configuration have running tracks?
2) Does Russia have any football clubs based in Sochi to use the stadium? If so, what division are they playing in now and what's the average attendance?

Sochi's climate can support palm trees.

During the Games, it won't be that cold in the city. That won't be the case for the mountain events.

POPULOUS SELECTED TO DESIGN SOCHI 2014 MAIN STADIUM

Date: September 29, 2009

http://www.architectsjournal.co.uk/pictures/595xAny/3/4/7/1212347_Sochi_2014_Olympics.jpg

The global design practice Populous is delighted to announce today that it has been selected by the State Corporation ‘Olympstroy’ to design the main stadium for the 2014 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games in Sochi, Russia.

Populous has also designed the master plan and overlay plan for competition and non-competition venues and facilities, and now adds designing the main 40,000 seat stadium to their expanding role on the 2014 Games. Populous is joined in the design consortium by Russian contractor Engeocom, and Botta Management.

"The main stadium design, in addition to the venue overlay plan we have prepared for the 2014 Games, delivers a wonderful vision for the winter Olympics, and a lasting sustainable legacy for Sochi. Its sweeping form responds to both its coastal location and mountainous backdrop, whilst its crystalline skin engages with its surroundings by day, and provides an iconic representation of the colour and spectacle of the games when illuminated at night. We are proud to be involved on such a level with Olympstroy," said John Barrow, Populous senior principal.

This is the 25th year of Populous' involvement in Olympic and Paralympic Games, and we are now the first design practice to have been officially appointed for the design of two Olympic Stadiums at one time. With Populous being the architects responsible for the main Stadium and venues overlay for the London 2012 Games, designing for Sochi 2014 ensures the continuation of the practice’s unrivalled experience in Olympic event planning and venue design. Each of these stadiums reflects new standards for Olympic sustainability initiatives.

2014 Winter Olympic Stadium By Populous Will Have Crystalline Skin

by Bridgette Meinhold, 09/30/09

Populous, a new venture recently spun-off from leading sustainable architecture firm HOK has unveiled its design for the stadium that will be the epicenter of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. Although the plans are still hazy, the project will feature several sustainable factors including a shimmering crystalline skin.

http://www.inhabitat.com/wp-content/uploads/2014-Winter-Olympic-Stadium-2.jpg

The translucent skin is meant to represent the “color and spectacle of the games when illuminated at night” and will envelope 40,000 people when the stadium is full. As with the entire plan of the Olympic games in Sochi, sustainability is key, although no details have yet been presented to outline the green features of the new stadium. Much like many of the eco-stadiums in recent years, advanced material technology, lightweight structures, as well as daylighting and natural ventilation will most likely play an important role.

“The main stadium design, in addition to the venue overlay plan we have prepared for the 2014 Games, delivers a wonderful vision for the winter Olympics, and a lasting sustainable legacy for Sochi. Its sweeping form responds to both its coastal location and mountainous backdrop, whilst its crystalline skin engages with its surroundings by day, and provides an iconic representation of the colour and spectacle of the games when illuminated at night. We are proud to be involved on such a level with Olympstroy,” said John Barrow, Populous senior principal. Populous is a fast moving and expanding firm with an impressive resume already in it’s first year of operation. Since December 2008, they have already won the bid to design the 2012 Olympic Stadium for London.

The firm has been chosen to design a 44,500-seat stadium for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, a Russian city on the Black Sea.

Populous described its design as a “wonderful vision.”

“Its sweeping form responds to both its coastal location and mountainous backdrop, while its crystalline skin engages with its surroundings by day and provides iconic representation of the color and spectacle of the games when illuminated at night.”

Chechnya is a calm place now with practically totally rebuilding Grozny. Already few seasons there are Premier League matches there, Cinema Festival. But I agree that Georgia is a main threat with their terrorists, who already made their ugly deals in Tskinval and Sukhumi.
Specially for WG-2014 there will be a centre of special services in Sochi which will prepare and will provide safety. Abkhazia will help in controlling borders. So I don't think that we should be worry about it. In 2014, I hope, US puppets will leave Georgia.

No offense to the Russians, but that stadium looks like a toilet seat. Is this place going to be ready by 2014? And is it going to be a safe place for people to travel to with its proximity to Georgia?

This stadium looks like 2 mountains.

No offense, but ask USA :) . It was another neocon's orchestrated war. It is Abkhazia between Sochi and Georgia, so yes, now it's safe. And in 2014, I assure, the US puppets will leave Georgia and adequate sense will win.

And this thread is about stadium.

Is every russian on this forum part of Putinjugend?
Adequate senses = Bend to Russias will or subject to war? :ohno:

FC Zhemchuzhina-Sochi (http://fc-zhemchuzhina.com/)

Club is currently #6 in First Division and has potential to play in Premier League already in next season.

The seating bowl accommodates event configurations between 25,000 and 45,000 seats (from Populous site). And it's obvious that with new stadium, new infrastructure it will attract big number of people. You only need a good manager policy.

Russian World Cup Bid Promotes Football Legacy of Sochi Olympic Stadium

(WFI) A relaunched football club in the southern Russian city of Sochi is hoping to take the country's Premier League by storm and safeguard the legacy of one of the proposed 2018 World Cup stadiums.

FC Zhemchuzhina-Sochi, currently playing their football in the first division, will move into the 40,000-seat venue being built as the main stadium for the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics after those Games.

The $250 million stadium, under construction on the site of a former cabbage field in the sub-tropical Black Sea resort, will host the opening and closing ceremonies of Russia's first ever Winter Olympics.

An upgrade would increase capacity for the World Cup to 46,000 to meet FIFA requirements if Russia secured the 2018 tournament. Post-World Cup plans call for a downsizing of the stadium, with the Sochi football club then playing in a reconfigured 25,000-capacity facility.

FIFA inspectors led by Chilean FA president Harold Mayne-Nicholls visited the site during their four-day evaluation trip to Russia last month.

The new owner and president of FC Zhemchuzhina-Sochi, former ice hockey player Dmitry Yakushev, has grand ambitions for a club only founded in 1991 that has struggled to establish itself in the last decade.

The Sochi club played in the old Soviet Second Division before spending seven seasons in the top division and going bankrupt in 2003. It was relaunched in 2007 under the name FC Zhemchuzhina-Sochi.

Yakushev has since pumped millions of dollars into the club, who currently play at Metreveli Stadium, which is proposed as a team base camp in Russia's 2018 bid.

But the 10,000-seat ground, located close to the centre of Sochi, is little more than a glorified athletics facility, and a world away from the Olympic Stadium the club plans to relocate to in a few years time.

The first division club currently attracts average gates of just 6,000 fans. Promotion to the Russian Premier League is seen as essential to growing the fanbase - and eventually drawing 20,000-plus crowds to the new stadium at the Olympic Park site.

The Russian government and 2018 World Cup bid are confident they will deliver the football legacy promised in the bid book.

Football club owner with big ideas

FC Zhemchuzhina-Sochi is already making strides in the right direction, according to the club's communications chief who spoke to reporters on Wednesday during a media tour of the Metreveli Stadium.

"We are pretty young and innovative," he said.

Wednesday night's league game between FC Zhemchuzhina-Sochi and Salut was the first ever live broadcast of a first division game on state television channel NTV.

"It is a breakthrough for Russian football," he said.

Aided by the government which wants to see a successful football team built in Sochi, Yakushev is investing heavily to fulfil that dream. The club already boasts a Brazilian player.

He has invested about $30 million in the club - marketing, facilities, players - in 2010 alone, according to the club spokesman.

Yakushev is building a squad of players in a bid for promotion to the top-flight to boost the fanbase across Russia.

A big spend on national and local marketing is aimed at attracting commercial sponsors and lifting attendances in the coming years.

FC Zhemchuzhina-Sochi recently became the first professional club in Russia to launch a TV campaign.

"The dream this year is we make it into the Premier League," the spokesman said, insisting that fans would flock to see the club once it had gained promotion to the top-flight..

He said the marketing push was aimed at widening the appeal of the club, which is seeking to win supporters from the Krasnodar region and beyond by underlining its ambition to become a force in the Russian Premier League. Showcasing the new stadium plans is part of the messaging.

Yakushev, who is also investing in multimillion dollar retail and hotel projects in Sochi, believes the club can one day compete on a level playing field with the big-spending giants of Russian football, Zenit Saint Petersburg and Spartak Moscow.

"We have to build our story and credibility," the club spokesman said.

FC Zhemchuzhina-Sochi has a huge catchment area to draw crowds; the nearest first division club is in the city of Kuban, about 300km from Sochi.

Olympic stadium design for football legacy

There is little to see of the new stadium planned for FC Zhemchuzhina-Sochi. It has yet to rise from the ground at the 200-hectare Olympic Park in Sochi - one of the biggest construction sites in Europe.

INSIDER visited the site of the stadium on a media tour this week paid for by the Russian World Cup bid.

Foundation work on the stadium started earlier this year ahead of the construction phase. It is one of six competition venues being built on the coastal site for the 2014 Winter Games.

Alexandra Kosterina, a spokeswoman for Olympstroy, the state company overseeing the big build for the Winter Games, told INSIDER that construction of the stadium was on schedule for completion in 2013.

"The idea of building a large football stadium was to have a strong team playing here and also to use it for entertainment events," she said.

Designed by Populous, the international architecture firm, the stadium features a transparent roof, including some solar panels, that only partially covers the pitch. It will allow for optimum grass growth when the facility is converted to its football mode.

The openings at both ends will give football fans spectacular views of the sea and mountains.

With Sochi's international airport just down the road and the city centre 10 minutes away by train, Russian bid officials insisted the stadium would be easily accessible to football fans for World Cup games.

I am happy to see moves in Sochi, related to football, as it would be "blasphemy" not to use stadium like this for football. But this huge investing and strong PR (as far as I got it, they are first club in Russia to make tv campaign) can be too fast and can have bad effect... so I would like to see them in top 5-6 in First Division this year, and attack on first two spots in next season... slowly build club, there is no need for club to became some one-two seasons hit and then fall to obscurity.

And stadium is great, and whole this 2014 project is something I find as great... and amusement park is lovely

Come on man, if England had won the 2018 world cup we'd have the Olympics and World Cup in the same decade too (along with the 2011 Champions League Final, 2013 Rugby League World Cup, 2014 Commonwealth Games, 2014 Ryder Cup, 2015 Rugby Union World Cup, 2019 Cricket World Cup, F1 etc etc). ;) So there's no point whinging about Russia.

Russia won all these contests. But surely, the number of sportive competitions (especially in the Olympic disciplines), which took place in the Soviet Union was much bigger.

1980 Summer Olympic Games;
1952, 1962 Volleyball Men World Championships;
1952, 1962, 1978 Volleyball Women World Chamoionships;
1959, 1986 Basketball Women World Championships;
1957, 1973, 1986 Ice Hockey World Championships;
and much more....

So, please, stop your blah-blah-blah....

Because, as far as I'm aware, the darts world championship doesn't draw over 3m spectators into its venues. The Rugby World Cup in 2015, however, will.

Sochi 2014, by comparison, expects to sell 1.7m tickets.

I think that you mind is somewhat in a gulag that can't let your ingrained stereotypes go. By the way Russia has plans to bid for the hosting Euro basket championships either men or women in 2015 in addition to the already said by WFI Insider. Maybe something else is still in the offing.

But it is true that Russia has been very little international sports competitions. Probably many of you know that by how many medals in Olympic sports (Olympic Games + World Championships + Euro + various Cups and Grand Prix) of Russia won the most medals in history. The second country on how many medals the U.S., but they are several times more host Olympic Games + World Championships than Russia.

I will tell you a few countries that will watch Rugby World Cup - UK, Ireland, France, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Argentina and several countries in Oceania.

I think it is useless to count how many countries will be watching the FIFA World Cup. It's easier to say where it will not watch.

And I can tell you which teams will be playing in the quarterfinals of the Rugby World Cup - England, Scotland, France, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Argentina and someone from the rest of world :) So boring... Are you ready to name the list of teams who will be playing in the quarterfinals of the FIFA World Cup?

Rugby will never become a global sport.

It's certainly a bigger event than the Volleyball Men World Championships, the Volleyball Women World Chamoionships, the Basketball Women World Championships, or the Ice Hockey World Championships which you saw fit to quote above and which nobody laughed at.

And you do realise that the event you're hosting in 2018 was codified by public schools in England don't you, just like Rugby?

I come into this thread and tell stunnerslight to stop trolling and guess who comes out of hiding and begins trolling himself. Thank you for calling me names, but that just reiterates my point. The track is made just for atheletes to walk on, and it has no other benefical factors, after the athletes walk on it once, it will remain part of the design for years to come, with no added benefit to the world. If thats the case then thats sweet, i have seen renders with what looked like a white field inside the stadium, which i thought would cater to the football pitch as well. If the football pitch will not have the track, then that makes total sense to have it temporarily installed for the games.
