7/10 Too boxy - especially as it's joining Beetham. Good height though! Don't think it would be getting 9s and 10s if it were 80m-100m tall???

The first and second renders look great but the third leaves me worried, it's got those 3d stripes going up the front like on the side of Beetham, but from the first and second renders it's a 9.

You should have made the poll public, I wonder which bitter person gave it a 4.

This tower looks great, and an awesome scale. What's the latest on a start date?

Isn't there already an established thread on this?

8 for height and height in comparison with location. It's great for Manchester, but if it was shorter I doubt it would get tens, or if it was in London.

Also I'm hoping that Manc/Brum/Leeds etc all start to get proper clusters shortly, not just a tower here and there. It should look great eventually.

It's a big old blocky beast to be sure... points for scale and boldness, however I'm a bit concerned that Manchester is going to turn into something of a lego-land if these square box-style buildings continue to dominate the skyline. You need some sexy curves soon.

On it's own though I'd give this an 8.5 - I'll round it up rather than down because it's breaking new ground in the north with it's height and that's gotta be a good thing for all of us!

I've typed it before and I'll type it again. It's pretty much a shorter version of the approved Riverside South Towers in London. One is at 214m and the other at 196m.

Not sure which was proposed first, but if Londons 2 go up before Manchesters 1, then Eastgate has no chance of being considered an iconic building. Nevertheless, I like Eastgate and think that 3rd render with the roof top observatory thing is quite cool. 7/10, drops marks for being a box and not being unique.

^^ Eastgate has far more elegance than those, a solid 8/10 from me.

They do?! They look exactly the same. My score on here would cause too many arguments on here :).

That's because you're jealous of it though isn't it? It's quality! 9

The London ones look fat and stubby... but are taller? Interesting. Eastgate is nice and slender in comparison. Not that I'd complain if those London ones were here.

Nope, I'm happy Manchester got it actually :).

Uninspiring copy of Riverside South. Marks go for height and not much else. Hope the cladding is good as it will make or break this box. At least you can guarantee that Riverside South will have good cladding, as the rest of Canary Wharf. I look to Beetham Manchester to look that the quality of cladding you'll see on this. Good luck.

I prefer this to Riverside South. Good height and form, I just hope they do something more interesting with the cladding :)

Borderline 8 or 9, and I am feeling generous today so a 9/10

Don't you just hate it when people 'sit on the fence'?! People should just say what they mean!

Particularly unexciting. Rating a dull design high because it's tall doesn't make sense to me so somebody tell me why I should rate it higher than 3 or 4...

cardiff
August 15th, 2009, 04:28 AM
Because even if you find it 'dull' it doesnt mean its a badly designed building, and from the renders it looks as if it would have been quite high quality. If you find it dull then 5 or 6 would be more apropriate than 3 or 4 surely?

Gherkin

I just can't see what people like about it other than it's height. It's 3 boxes joined together that don't match the base. It's not a bad design, just not at all exciting.

Hmmm...

i forget what derailed its construction, whether we thought it was due to the great oversupply manchester built up in 2007 or whether the economic collapse that came later and was kinda exogenous to the uk housing glut did it. i think they may have still been going at building it right until the credit crunch really set in.

p.s. does anyone remember arguing with mates in 2007 along the lines of:

you 'nah houses won't come down they'll just be flat for a year so you may as well buy now'
him 'i reckon they'll come down maybe 5% so i'll hold off buying for a year'

shouldn't post such dates :( haha.. to think we could have had most proposed towers be now had circumstances been different. However (naive as it may be) I still have some optimism for this project.. deluded it may be
