Thanks (again) StormShadow for the pics! Pics of Dodoma are not easy to find on the net. I was unaware that the Parliament building had been completed. I heard it was designed by Kenyan architechs.

Can you tell me what that colonial-looking building is (the one above the Mosque)? And do you know if there's a presidential residence built yet?

Stormshadow, as always truly great pics. Dodoma is the capital of Tanzania. Maybe you can open a thread on Dar es Salaam, too, if you have time?

I have little to no information on structures of Dodoma. It's very difficult to locate images of this city. About the "presidential residence" I will look into it and post what I find in the future.

Does anyone know why did Tanzania relocated it's capital Dodoma ?

^If you look at the population density map (below) you'll see the pop is concentrated on the coast and near Lake Victoria. So Dodoma is a nice central location. I was puzzled by the decision to move the capital also before I saw the pop distribution.

I think Dodoma is a mediocre capital city because its airport is too small and it doesn't even have a central business district!

But 2 Universities are planning to open in September 2007 (The University of Dodoma and the St. John's University of Tanzania in Dodoma). There are also plans to build a new airport 10 kilometres east of Dodoma in the Msalato area.

I think the government should allocate the funds where they need to go to stimulate economic and social development within Dodoma, instead of keeping the funds in Dar es Salaam....I went to Dodoma in 2007 and I couldn't believe that Dodoma was our country's capital. NO INFRASTRUCTURE AT ALL!!!! This city lacks in so many ways. They need to develop it and instead of President Kikwete and all other presidents living in DAR, they need to build a Presidential Palace in Dodoma......These people have no clue of how to run our country. It makes me so angry!!!!

welcome Nyerere. We need more Tanzanians to contribute. There is no political will to move to Dodoma. Promises Promises. Again Presidents promised Dodoma will get a new Airport and new State House. I also just saw a tender advert that Ministry of Finance wants to build Treasury building in Dodoma...I hope it wont be a branch of Dar es Salaam.

The government does care about It Capital. why making the Capital sleep like a small town?

They need to move all National/Federal Government departments here. and leave DES alone. Its already big, and growing very fast. it doesnt need lots money from Feds anymore. It can feed itself now.

It wont even be that expensive. Just 4-5 major business Boulevards, 1 mall, 1 airport, the College is already there and the military Central Command.

Exactly Butembo...The Airport will be built soon...Govt is looking for funds. I posted the proposed Airport in the Projects threads.

President Jakaya Kikwete officially opened (UDOM University of Dodoma) yesterday, student capacity of 45,000 compared with UDSM (University of Dar es Salaam) student capacity of 20,000. UDOM is MASSIVE, you need to travel by car between faculties. Kikwete striked a deal with Bill Gates in building an IT Center of Excellent at UDOM.

UDOM will change Dodoma for sure.

Now someone is thinking . Let hope Bill Gate opens the IT Center. UDOM will indeed, change the city .

And its just a matter of moving all Federal departments to the Capital and the activities from civil servants (in their 10s of 1000s) will change the city along side the Students.

Then you'll have Hotels, conference centers , Banks and other commerce business ( retail, Gas stations, etc...) will flood the city.

Have the government departments moved to this city yet. If not, do they have a timeline.
From the pics I have seen of Dar, there is a lot that have done provide all the necessary creature comforts for the legislature and civil servants that may have to move to Dodoma.
A case in point was Abuja in Nigeria. With all the money that was spent to help with the move, it was very difficult in the beginning. Some federal departments had to move back to Lagos.
It is all good in Abuja. All the government departments have now moved to Abuja. That status is now:

Lagos - Commercial Capital
Abuja - Administrative Capital

I am sure Tanzania can adopt the same labels.
I love this place. Keep the pictures coming :)

There is no political will to move to Dodoma...yes The Parliament is in Dodoma but when it is off session they come back to DSM to their little cramped office which causes traffic, parking nightmare...i have failed to understand TZ legislatures!

CDA-Capital Dodoma Authority was established to oversee that Dodma trully becomes a Capital City...I saw their plans of a mega Govt City were all Govt Ministries,Agencies, institutions etc be ...it was amazing but nothing has been done.

Construction of 5 No Grade A and 10 No Grade B Staff Houses on Lot 4 for the Proposed Extension of Local Government Training Institute at Hombolo Dodoma. The design development of the houses have considered the importance of keeping and preserving energy and environment by providing solar panels as an alternative source of power into each building.

- Staff House Grade ‘A’ are tow storey buildings with a self contained visitor’s suit, master bedroom, and two other bedrooms.

- Staff House Grade ‘B’ are single storey buildings comprising of three bedrooms one of which being a master bedroom

hahah actually it is a small town though the population is skyrocketing i assume right now to be between 350,000 and 400,000 residents in Dodoma Urban; the town itself! Universities existence has given the town a boost+life line! Thanks to University of Dodoma, St JOhn's University, Institute of Rural Development Planning, College of Business Education (more intake now), Local Government Training Institute, Vocational Education and Training Authority, Local Government Training Institute, Mineral Resources Institute and St Peter Claver High School (anticipated loyola Teacher's college) since right now people can dare to invest in the real estate business in Dodoma.

I spoke with people who work and leave in Dodoma...they don't care anymore on the Govt promise to relocate there but will develop Dodoma themselves.

Seeing these photos you get to see that Dodoma really is developing at its own pace.

Client: PRESIDENT OFFICE,STATE HOUSE
Project: State Lodge, Chamwino
Location: Chamwino, Dodoma Region
Completion: 2011
Floor Area: 1,200m2
Contract Value: Not Available

Chamwino complex of buildings was built in the 1970s at the instigation of President Julius Nyerere. It incorporates a State Lodge, Reception Building, Auditorium, Guest wing for 3 visiting Presidents, and Office Building for the Tanzanian President when he stays in Dodoma. From 2010 - 2011 IPA were architects for the complete renovation of the State Lodge, Reception and Office Buildings. Of interest in the Lodge is the fact that all of the rooms are built around the characteristics local rock formations. The existing topography was left totally intact and the building set down upon it with almost no intrusion.
