I have little information about new or old structures in Dar es Salaam. I'm sure those buildings have been completed already, since that photo set I posted was originally from 2005. I would think it's the "NIC Pension Plaza II" but I could be very wrong.

That picture in Dar es Salaam with the old colonial building with the 'Alitalia' sign, I got a nice story about it. A year and a half I went to that travel agency, because that's where I could withdrawl cash from my MasterCard. I was in need of money, so I cashed US$1300,- in order to spend it on Zanzibar. Somehow they never charged my creditcard, which made me believe I basically got a wonderfull holiday on Zanzibar for free. At least until last december, when suddenly EUR1000,- was charged from my CC. Despite the dissapointment that after all I didn't got that vacation for free, they gave me almost two years to pay for it, and save up to EUR200,- due to currency differences made in thos two years.

So whenever you want to go on a holiday now, and expect to have the money for it within two years, make sure you get your cash at that travel agent!

Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar are both great looking :cool:

I'd like to visit Zanzibar one day. That city and Somalia have a long history, and a lot of the housing styles and way of life is similar to Somalia. Zanzibar and Mogadishu were both powerful city states back in the day.

No! quite the opposite. Its for maritime traffic control to monitor the Dar es salaam shipping routes. A simmilar one is slated for the neighbouring Mombasa port in Kenya.

Nice pics. The Bus Rapid Transit project is still going on. From what I've heard at least some major roads have been widened with extra bus lanes added. The buses are either to be imported or to be assembled in Kenya.The buses should be running by the end of the year. at least they will be more effective than the ''daladala'' (minibus taxi) that are really a headache.

There are some other developments, notably the construction of a major educational complex by the Aga Khan. Also there is talk of a new mall coming soon following the success of Mlimani shopping centre. I guess the Slipway mall in Msasani may also be a new development (though Im not too sure). Others are the new stadium and the maritime control tower which should be complete.

My first trip to Dar Es Salam was in October 2005 and the moment flew into D.E.S from Nairobi, I was already in love with the blue harbor of this city.

I remember Msasani peninsula vividly. I stayed in a small time motel called the "Peninsula" run by some Irish concern and it had one of the best views of the Msasani Peninsula with the new 'Slipway' under construction then.

I remember - vividly - the sunsets where the sky is just littered with a million shades with each passing seconds.. The call of the Muezzein when the breeze flirted with my face as the Dhows gently floated in directions I do not know of.

D.E.S has a unique romance about it, in that, it has a rustic charm that enlivens your experience ! Beckon, it does.. for a second visit; which I will certainly make in the near future.

I've never taken the boat to zanzibar but I know its 4 to 7 hours if you factor in any delays. Most people prefer the 20 minute flight from Dar to Zanzibar.

Indeed, I agree, extremely beautiful, unique and has a rich history.

Only problem I have with it is that the historic buildings need more renovation.

Here is a picture of the decrepit Michenzani Plattenbau housing project in Zanzibar. It was built in the early 1970s. Throughout its existence it had turned into an area of urban decay.

Most of the Tanzanian coast were where the Swahili city states were located correct ? It extended north up into Lamu Island in Kenya, perhaps an establishment in Kismaayo, Somalia.

I have little information about new or old structures in Dar es Salaam. I'm sure those buildings have been completed already, since that photo set I posted was originally from 2005. I would think it's the "NIC Pension Plaza II" but I could be very wrong.

You can say that again. Most people I know get really surprised especially when flying over the city centre for the first time (before landing) and seeing the numerous tower blocks below. For Kenyans, they kinda expect to see another "Mombasa like" city.

yep i agree.but by 2020 eac will see its secondary cities start becoming more major like how in south africa durban,johanasburg and capetown are together. our capital will still be the largest but our second cities will see huge development trust me.

I think they should phase out most of those daladala's. Especially the one's going by the name 'city bus'.
