LIPA AT A GLANCE

The Birthplace of the Coffee Industry

According to the BPI records, coffee was first brought to the Philippines from Mexico by a Franciscan Friar and planted in the Town of Lipa. That was in 1740.

The records of the Franciscan Order, however, mention 1814 as the year when two Augustinian priests initiated the cultivation of coffee in the Philippines. The first seeds were planted in Lipa. This was followed by the cultivation of the crop in neighboring municipalities.

The two records agree on one point, that the first coffee plants in the Philippines were cultivated in Lipa.

Heir to a Glorious Past

Under the leadership of Don Galo de los Reyes, coffee production was enforced in Lipa. By the middle of the 1880s, it was producing bountiful harvests. Thus, when a plague destroyed coffee plantations in Brazil and other coffee producing countries, the town supplied the needs of the coffee drinking world. The municipality became the world center of coffee trade.

The richest in the Philippines, Lipa had mansions which were furnished with the best from Europe. The children of the wealthy landowners studied abroad.

Because of Lipa’s wealth and grandeur, it was elevated into Villa de Lipa on 21 October 1887 by Queen Maria Cristina of Spain. In December 1887, it was authorized to use a coat of arms.

The Spawning Ground of Great Men

Lipa produced great men during the Spanish revolt, when the country fought against American rule and in the years that followed. Artists and great men of letters also came from Lipa.

Among those who were born in Lipa are the following; Claro M. Recto, Teodoro M. Kalaw, Maria Kalaw Katigbak, Maximo Kalaw, Lauro Dimayuga, Fidel Reyes, Arsenio Luz and many others.

The most Rev. Alfredo Maria Obviar, whose beatification is being pushed by Catholics everywhere was also born in Lipa.

A City Which is Truly Special

With its elevation of 1,025 feet above sea level, Lipa enjoys a beautiful climate which is sometimes very cold in the wintry months. The heat is never too harsh even in the sizzling summer months. Nestled between two mountains ranges Mt. Malarayat and Mt. Makulot, Lipa is seldom battered by violent storms. Very often, a typhoon has already been tempered by the surrounding mountains when it reaches the area.

MORE ON LIPA CITY:

Location

Lipa City is quite unique in terms of its geographic location. It is approximately in the center of the country from Batanes to Sulu and from its eastern periphery of Surigao Province to the western international boundary of Palawan. The city is in the center of Region IV right in the heart of Batangas Province.

She is bounded by the Municipality of Sto. Tomas in the North- east, San Pablo City and the municipality of San Antonio, Quezon Province in the East. Municipalities of Padre Garcia and Rosario in the Southeast , Ibaan and San Jose in the Southwest, Municipalities of Cuenca and Mataas na Kahoy and the Taal Lake in the West and the Municipalities of Balete and Malvar in the Northwest. Thus, it may be positively stated that all roads lead to Lipa.

Her domain comprises a total land area of 20,940 hectares. Lipa's nautical location shows her at a longitude of 13 degrees 56 minutes north and a latitude of 121 degrees 10 minutes east on the globe.

Apart from this, another good factor on the city's geographic characteristics is its proximity to the country's capital, Manila, having an approximate distance of 86 kms., or this is only about one and a half (1 1/2) hours drive by car through the South Expressway.

In view of its unique geographic location, Lipa City has a great advantage for future development, an ideal hub and center of the CALABARZON Industrial Region.Land Area

The total land area of Lipa City is 24,765.93 hectares.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Topography

Lipa City's topography is irregular with a rolling plateau of generally slight gradiants and undulating with higher gradiants in the eastern and western fringes or mountains and lake boundaries and creek embankments.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Elevation

Lipa City is virtually sitting majestically atop of a mountain with an elevation of 1,025 ft. above sea level.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Climate

The climate of Lipa City belongs to the first type characterized by two pronounced seasons; wet and dry. Rain period starts from June to October with heavy rains occurring during the months of July and October. Dry seasons starts from the month of January to the last of May, where March is recorded the hottest period. There are seven (7)months of wet seasons and five (5) months of dry season.

Due to the city's favorable elevation of 1,025 feet above sea level, Lipa is generally cool and enjoys an invigorating climate through- out the year except on several occasions when typhoons occur and during the summer season. Typhoon occurrence is not frequent. An average of two (2) typhoons normally are expected to occur during the months from July to September. To date, the heaviest typhoon recorded that have affected not only the city but the other major parts of the country as well, occurred sometime in November 1995, which was named Rosing.

More evidence sought to back Lipa apparition

By Jerome Aning
Inquirer
Last updated 04:19am (Mla time) 09/13/2006

Published on Page A1 of the September 13, 2006 issue of the Philippine Daily Inquirer

LIPA ARCHBISHOP Ramon Arguelles is looking at new evidence to support the claims of an apparition by the Virgin Mary to a Carmelite nun in 1948.

Arguelles said that with the help of some individuals, he had been collating new testimonies and documents about the apparition and miracles attributed to it in the hope that the Vatican would reconsider its decision that cast doubt on the event.

“We’re collecting stories from the present as well as previously unheard of testimonies from the past by old people. It’s good that they are leaving something because they are already dying one by one,” the prelate told reporters.

Today marks the 58th anniversary of the apparition and the 3rd National Pilgrimage of Lipa for Conversion, Consecration and Reparation at the Shrine of the Mediatrix of All Grace.

The event is organized by the Lipa Archdiocese and lay devotees led by Lipa City Mayor Vilma Santos.

Besides the reported Marian apparitions, several miracles were believed to have taken place in the Carmelite convent in Lipa City, according to Arguelles.

Not yet closed

“The case is not yet closed,” Arguelles said, adding that the new documents and testimonies, which may or may not be accepted as evidence, would be merged with other materials presented in earlier probes.

“Who knows, the validation of the apparition may take place in the next century. But God’s time is not ours; you and me want it approved quickly, in our own time, but it’s not actually necessary. We should not look for our own satisfaction,” he added.

Arguelles also lauded Sister Teresita Castillo, whom he quoted as saying that she was not after official recognition but only for Catholics to believe in Mary’s intercession, pray more and turn away from evil deeds.

19 reported appearances

Castillo claimed the Virgin appeared to her 19 times from Sept. 12 to Nov. 12, 1948, identifying herself as the Mediatrix of All Grace, ordering that a statue of hers be made and asking for prayers.

After the apparitions, rose petals reportedly rained in the nuns’ cells, in other parts of the convent and even outside the premises. The petals were said to have been inscribed with images of the Virgin, Jesus Christ and St. Joseph.

‘Not supernatural’

However, a committee of five bishops declared in 1951 that the event was “not supernatural.”

Castillo and the other nuns were forbidden by Church authorities to speak about the apparition. Arguelles noted that obedience to superiors was one of the instructions the visionary received from the Virgin.

In 1981, then Archbishop of Lipa Mariano Gaviola studied the apparitions and later granted permission to expose once again the icon of the Mediatrix.

In January 1991, the petal showers again fell and the Virgin Mary was reported to have shown herself to Castillo again. Three years later, Gaviola declared his personal conviction that the events in Lipa were worthy of belief, paving the way for the complete rehabilitation of the place.

Regardless of the veracity of the apparitions, Arguelles said many people believed in “the strong and grace-filled presence of the Virgin Mother in Lipa.”

“The best proof of the authenticity [of an apparition] is its effects on the people,” he added.

Arguelles noted that the crowd of devotees congregating in Lipa in the past years had “experienced [Mary’s] maternal care” and that every pilgrim “is aware of this distinct experience, if one believes and puts complete trust in Jesus’ infinite mercy and Mary’s unfailing love.”

Pilgrim’s goal

Arguelles said praying for peace, harmony and genuine progress in the country and everywhere should be the pilgrim’s goal instead of buying relics of the apparition.

“Without denying past events, more people concentrate less on what happened in past decades and pay more grateful attention to what God and the Holy Mother will still do now and the days ahead,” he added.

Many other Church officials, including Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales of Manila, Ricardo Cardinal Vidal of Cebu and Archbishop Angel Lagdameo of Jaro, who is also president of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines, have endorsed the pilgrimage and thus, indirectly, their belief that the apparitions were true.

Day of prayer

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has also declared today a National Day of Prayer, Reparation and Consecration for Our Nation under Proclamation No. 1095 that she issued on July 10.

The Carmelite convent became a popular destination in the late ’40s and early ’50s. The crowds dwindled for a while until they increased in the early 1990s.

The organizers of the Lipa event hope to propagate a Marian devotion similar to those being observed for the Our Ladies of the Rosary in Manaoag, Good Voyage in Antipolo City and Peñafrancia in Naga City. With a report from Marlon Alexander Luistro, Inquirer Southern Luzon

Likewise here. My last time in Lipa was in 1996 or 97 I think. Iba na yung itsura ng Lipa. The development is really impressive.

Honestly, parang gusto ko magkabahay sa Lipa.

@Gridloc, do you remember this post I made a few months ago?

Can anyone fill me in on Laguna Properties' project (now Avidaland) Hacienda Sta. Monica? Is that far from the town center?

Its about 4 kms from the city center, it is near but if you go there on a sunday nakow napakatraffic because of sunday masses at carmel church, and if there is a funeral procession. :runaway:

Salamat sa info mo. I wasn't able to visit Hda. Sta. Monica pero that will be another trip to look forward to.

Are you still based in Lipa? Please fill me in on life in Lipa. Even my son really liked Lipa. :okay:

One of the things that also impressed me was the fact that Lipa is not even 85km away from where I am in Metro Manila. When I lived in Negros, a trip from Bacolod down south to one of the more progressive cities, Kabankalan, is anywhere from 103 to 106km.

Well, here are my Lipa pictures...

Let's start off with Lipa in the winter (just kidding )

Yup. My family's from there. Are you from Bacolod? I used to go there when I was employed. Used to stay at Bacolod Pension Plaza. My areas include Bacolod, Kabankalan, San Carlos, etc. Almost stayed there for good, supposed to be my base. I fell in love with the place!

There are so many things that have changed in Lipa. Somehow, I still have the longing for that once smaller, quieter town. In any case here are my initial contributions to this thread:

I love this beautiful house. It certainly associates with my childhood memories of Lipa.

The public cemetery has not changed at all. All Soul's day was just a few days away when I took this photo and I was definitely reminded of how this sleepy place comes to a vibrant life as we remember the dead.

A touch of Provence in Lipa
RENDEZVOUs By Christine S. Dayrit
The Philippine STAR 01/07/2007

Your diamonds are not in far distant mountains or in yonder seas: they are in your own backyard, if you dig for them," declares writer Russell H. Conwell.

It is the beginning of the year and priceless moments beckon. The temperature outside rises and even the fog in the highest mountain peaks slowly begins to disappear, unveiling the breathtaking view it temporarily covered. As with many things in life, just because you cannot view it, doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. All of nature will be at peace if we will it to be. This is the time to challenge your spirits, to explore the uncharted paths and discover the gems that sparkle from within. Be a swashbuckling buccaneer or a pastoral poet. Whatever journey you take, trek the road less traveled and savor the difference.

I recently visited a refreshing weekend enclave in Lipa City, Batangas, owned by Charley Leviste-Antonio, a dear friend and grade-school classmate at Assumption. Fondly called Charley’s Bed & Breakfast, it is located within the Levely Manor Estate. Like a pearl of great price, it is an impressive property accessed by a mahogany tree-lined driveway covered with pebbles and reminiscent of grand country estates in the South of France. For a while, I felt transported to the exquisite countryside of Provence where lavender stalks gloriously sway to the gentle breeze wafting their sweet fragrance, where chamomile tea is gently poured into delicate china cups and gourmet vegetable gardens in pretty greenhouses are complementary creative pastimes.

Levely Manor, designed by architect Dan Lichauco, offers guests a distinct experience – that of European-inspired farm estate living. Here, guests will feel as if they were invited by one of the family members to join them for a weekend in a warm and elegant atmosphere. Upon arrival at the Main House, guests are treated to a delightful cocktail of red wine and Charley’s very own rosemary-roasted cashew nuts prior to an introduction to the Manor’s facilities, presided by the innkeeper and host – Charley herself.

The 1,200-square-meter Main House with a distinct European-inspired architectural style is composed of a grand foyer, a large living room with a two-story-high ceiling; a dining room called "Charley’s," which is actually the Manor’s restaurant; a large kitchen that caters to all guest meal requirements; and four en suite rooms.

The Manor’s luxurious accommodation facilities, fitted by interior designer Anton Baretto, features comfortable furnishings with rich fabric in subtle earth colors and is complemented by expansive views of the estate seen through large glass windows. The Honeymoon Suite, with its own private balcony, is ideally romantic with a four-poster queen-sized bed; the Family Suite with two twin beds; and the Executive Suite with a queen-sized bed. All suites come with an attached private toilet and bath featuring toiletries from world-renowned L’Occitane.

Adjacent to the Main House is a two-story library. A haven for bibliophiles, it contains volumes of old history books that make for interesting reading.

The Manor’s backdrop is a spectacular ranch or – better yet – a "horse hotel and spa," as Charley puts it. Thoroughbreds grazing on green grass add to the rustic experience. The ranch also doubles as a training ground for Charley’s younger sister, Olympic equestrienne Toni Leviste, who also runs the European-inspired stable – the only one of its kind in the Philippines.

After an interesting peek into the Manor’s superb and luxurious facilities (which will become available early this year), we were ushered into Charley’s, the intimate main dining area (and restaurant), for a delightful meal.

Charley’s is a newly opened restaurant in Levely Manor where guests experience a unique brand of culinary delight – of dining in a luxury family estate – either inside the home’s air-conditioned dining area, on the trellised terrace, or al fresco in a nearby gazebo by the greenhouse. All venues offer expansive refreshing views of the estate. To complete the dining experience, guests are served by gentle female helpers and not waiters. Dishes are served family-style in a casual ambience where requests for second helpings will always be accommodated.

Set lunch or dinner menus are changed on a weekly basis and consist of a complete five-course meal inclusive of hot and cold beverages such as Batangas’ own kapeng barako, mint or tarragon tea, lemon grass iced tea, and pandan iced tea. All dishes are meticulously prepared by Charley’s executive chef Popit De Leon, a graduate of Les Roches, Switzerland.

The menu leans toward decidedly French tastes with influences from other cuisine like American, Italian and Thai, blending to create a truly unique cuisine. Apart from using only the best and freshest ingredients Batangas has to offer, the hallmark of Charley’s cuisine is the on-site greenhouse where fresh herbs like oregano, tarragon, rosemary, mint, basil, chives, dill and coriander are hand-picked to flavor most dishes. The marriage of these two abundant pleasures is the highlight of Charley’s cuisine.

After a restful evening in one of Charley’s comfortable and luxurious suites, you wake up to yet another sumptuous treat – breakfast of a different kind: scrambled eggs with oregano, Chef Popit’s homemade ham and sausages, local pandesal accompanied with kesong puti, suman and bibingka, and chocolate eh.

For those who want to bring home a taste of Charley’s, fresh and dried herbs, bottled dressings and oils, and even Charley’s homemade herbed olive oil kesong puti are also available for sale.

Lipa City is quite unique in terms of its location. It is situated in the center of the country from the northern province of Batanes to the southern tip of Sulu and from the eastern periphery of Surigao province to the western international boundary of Palawan. The city is in the center of Region 4, right in the heart of Batangas province.

While in Lipa City, the Levely Manor can be a wonderful base for other activities. One may visit the San Sebastian Cathedral, which is reminiscent of the Sistine Chapel with its entire ceiling covered with religious murals.

Lipa also has a famous garden known as Anihan Botanical Garden. Located in Barangay Bulacnin, one can visit this place to enjoy the cool air of the Batangas countryside and its greenery. The late Belen Ocampo filled two hectares of her nine-hectare property with indigenous as well as imported exotic plants, creating the quintessential showcase and living classroom for plant specialists and laymen alike. Each area carries a specific theme, from herbs to perfumed plants, cacti, roses, bamboo, poisonous trees creepers, bonsais, orchids and others.

Test your skills and play a round of golf at the Malarayat Golf and Country Club or Summit Point. Both clubs offer world-class facilities in an all-year cool weather and exhilarating views of the cloud-tipped Malarayat Mountain Range, with the sound of bamboo trees whistling and the rising and falling calls of birds.

Finally, one may also indulge the senses and seek wellness and healing at The Farm at San Benito. Also known as Hippocrates Health Resort of Asia outside the Philippines, The Farm is one of the few truly medical spas or alternative medical health resorts in the world. It aims to reinstall harmony, balance and improved lifestyle through rejuvenation and relaxation into a person’s life.

The world we live in is waiting to be explored and rediscovered. We often say we simply don’t have the luxury of time to relax, enjoy and unwind. The truth is, the time to relax is when you don’t have time. Remember, you only live once; but if you do it right, once is more than enough. * * *
Charley’s Bed & Breakfast, located along Gov. F. Leviste Highway in Lipa City, Batangas, is open on weekends only. All visits must be strictly prearranged. For details and reservations, call Charley Leviste-Antonio at 0920-9507032.

Ala eh.... kapeng Batangas. Kay sarap nare!

http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k60/ECdoesit2/BatangasBrew.jpg
Kapeng Barako...
Barako coffee -- known as the Batangas coffee because of its strong taste and aroma.

Parokya ni Edgar: Batangas Coffee (lyrics)

Bumangon ka na riyan at baka ika’y kapuyin
Ipunin na ang tubal at ito’y ating usingin
Pagpanaog dahan-dahan, at huwag tutulog-tulog
Mahuna na ang hagdanan at baka ika’y mahulog

Salaula sa babag, beinte-nuebe balisong
Pag lamon o babakan siguradong di uurong
Bulalo, lomi at balatong, purunggo at tutong
Huwag mong sasayangin siguradong mabubusong!!!

Tumatagurtor na ang tuhor ko pare!
Walanjo naging nerbyoso dahil sa kapeng barako
Idaan mo na lang sa gin, ala eh! with ice na rin
Babarik, babarik, babarik nang babarik
Batangas coffee…

Ano bang iyong problema? Maglaro ka’t maglibang
Bayoot ang iyong mukha, aba’y hindi dapat gany-an
Gusto mo bang magjolen, basketbol, teks sa daan?
Kakang-baliw ay iwasan at mapa-aw na na laang

JG Summit Petrochemical Corporation (located in Batangas City) is 80% owned by JG Summit Holdings, Inc., with the remaining 20% held by Marubeni Corporation of Japan. Upon its inauguration on April 6, 1998, the JGS Petrochemicals plant became the country's first integrated polypropylene and polyethylene complex. JGSPC's product lines include linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) film and injections, high-density polyethylene (PP) yarn, film and projection grades. The Company makes these previously imported materials available at local prices. Domestic manufacture of these raw materials for use in the plastics industry not only creates more jobs and saves dollars, but also provides an accessible source for one of the necessary building blocks of newly industrialized countries.

Next side project ko naman yan. Kasama na ung palasyo ng jueteng/drug lord ng Batangas (also known as Kapitolyo). Kukunan yan the next time na mapapasyal ako dun.

Maski ndi ako taga-doon ako man ay hanga sa kalinisan ng Batangas City.

Beautiful and well-kempt street Islands.

I love going to Lipa City. Can anyone please post a picture of Our Lady of Lipa (Mary Mediatrix) that is well known for the miracle of roses?
