The Peerless Tower. On the "WaterWalk."

Discuss. This is a very ugly tower, in my opinion.

I have no idea what function it's supposed to serve. If the moon needs its ears cleaned, perhaps.

Design aside... is Wichita that cosmopolitan of a city where people would want to go up in this thing and admire the skyline/landscape?

I think people would. It has a metro pop. of about 600k so there's plenty of people around to visit it. Plus it would probably get a lot of local tourists because there aren't any other major cities near Wichita. KC is about 2.5 hours away and OKC is even further. Wichita draws lots of people from western, central, and SE KS who come their to shop and dine, so I think it will be ok.

Where and what is the story behind this design? I don't understand how people can criticize the design without the reasoning of this suppose structure being proposed in Wichita; so without "putting the cart before a horse", let's see the story.

It's kinda interesting, but looks much more like an airport control tower than an observation tower. And no offense, but what is there to observe in Wichita? A minor skyline and that's it? There aren't any hills or interesting topography in Wichita are there? I would think that the money for this could be better spent.

For some reason cities in KS have gotten an itch to build tall observation towers. You all remember the tower in Edwardsville, KS? Not even sure if they gave the green light for that.

I wonder how much that Wichita tower will cost.

I kind of think this is just a stupid idea someone had... It has a website somewhere but it didn't look very professional or detailed. It would be cool, no doubt, and I'd probably want to try it sometime, to look out on all the trailerhouse suburbs and factories. But really, being in the future Waterwalk area, it would probably have plenty of visitors.

I seriously have my reservations about that, particularly because Wichita's WaterWalk seems to be pretty bland, in my opinion. That aside, you pretty much nailed Wichita. Trailorpark suburbs and factories. It's like the town is a suburb of its own factories.

This one will probably go down with the "Welcome to Paris" sign outside of Paris, TX. Just another kitschy photo op moment.

This particular....umm....thing, is a great example of why some architects/developers should be shot for putting up such silly renderings/concepts. That thing looks like something I cannot even type on this forum.....

If that gets built I don't think the people of Wichita will be pleased

On their website, they compared this to the Eiffel Tower and the Space Needle.

On Emporis it says its about to break ground, but it doesn't give a height.

Well since no one will reference the design and its story. I will comment on this; why oh why in Wichita of all places? This "bobbing Q-tip" structure would be more suitable in Louisville with their new ugly project the Museum Place.

This reminds me of Newport, KY's version of a pie in the sky oberservation tower. Even though Newport had a city/skyline to view (Cincinnati) the project died out...money for these bohemoths always seems to dry up.

The Mission
--------------------------------------------------

The mission is to begin a unique cityscape image to transform Wichita and thrust it into the 21st century by building an observation tower, known as the Peerless Tower.

The Peerless Tower’s aim is to provide a guiding light of inspiration and pride for a whole new attitude and change for this city. It will promote an entirely new direction and an entirely new title for Wichita. We will add on to the “Air Capital of the World” and will be known also as the “Peerless City”. It will be a significant conversion for the purpose of greater marketability and promotion. We will tell the world that Wichita is an incomparable city with vision, splendor, a boundless entrepreneurial soul, and the greatest place to call home. This new identity, and new image, will help Wichita take its place among the other great cities and will forever be known by its name.

We would like you to be involved in helping to shape the future of Wichita. Together, we can make it happen. The goal is to build the Peerless Tower and donate it as a public landmark for everybody to enjoy and to inspire the people of Wichita to take pride of our community and to continue our path towards an identity that will be uniquely ours.

The Peerless Tower
--------------------------------------------------

The Peerless Tower has the primary purpose of housing the Wichita visitor’s information center, a one stop source for information about the many attractions in and around the Wichita area.

At a height close to 500ft it will be the central focal point for the area as it soars up above the skyline to become the tallest structure in the city. With its distinctive image, visitors will have a clearly identifiable starting point for their journey through our fine city.

The Peerless Tower observation deck will provide a 360 degree panoramic view that will attract newcomers and long time residents alike. Overlooking the city and the Great Plains, you will be able to view local points of interest from a new perspective. With a motto like "The Air Capital of the World," it is only fitting Wichita has a view perched high above the Plains.

The Peerless Tower will commemorate the people of the great city of Wichita. Displays in the Peerless Tower will provide inspiration as they highlight and promote local enterprise, innovation, and the entrepreneurs that span our local industries. The displays will document those who have shaped the City of Wichita and made their mark on the world. The Wall of Quotes will motivate Wichitans with words of wisdom, using our history to inspire our future.

How can you help?
--------------------------------------------------

This project is set up as a nonprofit organization. Nobody involved is going to financially benefit from this project. We are not taking a salary, stipend, or allowance of any kind, and there are not any paid staff members. This is managed by volunteers only.

Once the tower is built, it will be donated to the city in the public domain and we will continue to operate it under the auspices of the City of Wichita and the Greater Wichita Convention and Visitors Bureau. There will be a guarantee that the tower commemorates each and every person that helped make it happen, so your contribution is valued.

Everybody that financially contributes to the project will be credited as helping build the tower. The amount that you donate does not matter. Your name will be on the commemorative list that will be on-site and you will be part of official documents for the history books. You can have the commemorative name as an individual, couple or family. We also welcome companies and organizations to be commemorated on the list as well. You can also choose to be anonymous if you like.

Wow, 500 feet, that's krazy... Funded by private donations??? Never going to happen...

Hey yeah, all those aerospace factories... Maybe they should build it down here in OKC so that the operation managers of all those factories can look over their employees.

Oh pah, Museum Plaza trumps that things. Tetris is soooo much more fun than a needle-pointed dildo. yikes.
But if Wichita doesn't want it, WHAT THE HELL? We'll take it. We already have Kaden and Humana. Now its a trend to build wierd stuff, rather than an accident. Louisville's the American Rotterdam.

I don't mind cities trying to brand themselves and create an identity...I think it's a great idea, actually, considering how important image is in today's culture. Cities need to market themselves successfully to draw in young creative types with fresh ideas and disposable income.

BUT...

I do have a problem with cities overreaching and creating "new identities" that only wind up as embarassingly ironic. And calling Wichita a "Peerless City" is a joke.

Oh, and that tower looks like an anemic albino dick. Gross.
