ČSA carries nearly 5.5 million passengers in 2006

http://www.csanews.cz/en/img/tc_sp_logo_csa.gif

In 2006, Czech Airlines (ČSA) carried nearly 5.5 million passengers. Year-on-year, this represented an increase of 4.7 per cent. In 2005, ČSA carried 5.2 million passengers and a year earlier 4.3 million. Regular passenger traffic accounts for the greatest share of this result, with the number of such passengers having increased by 3.4 per cent year-on-year, reaching nearly 4.7 million. In 2006, ČSA operated over 39,000 flights, which represented an increase of 1.1 per cent over the previous year.

http://www.csanews.cz/en/pic/news_15_1_07/graf.gif

“This was the first time in its history that ČSA has carried nearly 5.5 million passengers in a single calendar year. We expect the number of passengers to grow in the future too, as the impact of the new business model becomes apparent. Additionally, the overall passenger capacity will grow with the arrival of the new Airbus aircraft, which have a greater number of seats,” said ČSA’s Vice-President for Sales Petr Řehák with respect to the passenger load figures.

Regular Passenger Traffic
In 2006, Czech Airlines reaffirmed its leading position in the air transport market through both improving its schedule of offered flights and by invigorating its fleet with the addition of new generation aircraft. “We have left the unproductive path of expansion at any cost and focused on reinforcing effective routes,” said Petr Řehák. For example, as part of the winter flight schedule (i.e. starting 29 October), the frequency of flights to Moscow, Yekaterinburg, Odessa, Tallinn, Vilnius, Sofia, Sarajevo, Ljubljana, Zagreb and Bucharest has been increased. The most popular destinations on regular ČSA routes in 2006 included Paris, Amsterdam, London, Madrid, Moscow, Dublin, New York, Rome, and Athens.

SkyEurope Airlines, Central Europe’s leading low-cost low-fare airline, announced today the opening of a new base at Vienna Schwechat International airport. With begin of the summer season on 25 March 2007 the company will place two brand new Boeing 737-700 Next Generation aircraft at Vienna International airport and will operate a network of 16 European routes in direct from Vienna, among them top destinations such as Amsterdam, Brussels and Paris.

The opening of a base in Vienna reflects the success of the airline on the Austrian market and underlines the important role of Bratislava, as the Company’s headquarter and home base. Today already 20% of passengers departing and arriving from Bratislava are Austrians. Certain routes account for over 50% Austrian share.

By opening the new Vienna base in addition to Bratislava as main hub in the region, SkyEurope strengthens its position as the leading low cost carrier serving now the two main airports in the catchments’ area of 6 million inhabitants.

“The expansion into Vienna is a prime example of a successful business expanding into Western Europe” said Christian Mandl, CEO of SkyEurope Airlines. The combination of Bratislava and Vienna means a further efficiency improvement on our quest for profitability. SkyEurope offers now the best destination choice for our passengers in Vienna and Bratislava respectively hence providing an excellent global product.”

Holidays in Croatia, City Breaks in Amsterdam, Barcelona or Paris or on business to Sofia or Bucharest

SkyEurope’s route network from Vienna offers 16 European hot spot destinations.

For city breakers and business travellers SkyEurope will operate Amsterdam, Brussels and Paris that will be served on daily basis. To Eastern Europe flights to Bucharest and Sofia will be operated six respectively seven times a week.

Other leisure city hot spots, that will be introduced with the summer timetable are Florence and Venice with three weekly flights. As typical summer destinations SkyEurope will reintroduce Nice and open Athens, Thessaloniki, Larnaca as holiday destinations. The Company’s prime position on the Croatian market will be reinforced by scheduled flights to Dubrovnik, Split and Zadar along the Dalmatian coast.

In total the summer time table will offer 61 weekly flights departing from Vienna.

With the opening of the Vienna base, SkyEurope will foster its position as the leading low fare airline in the region and provide in total 27 destinations from Bratislava and Vienna respectively. The time table will allow passengers to reach many destinations from both airports, hence creating more choice and higher frequencies for the passengers. The SkyShuttle bus transfer service will allow as in the past a convenient way for a seamless connection between both airports and Vienna city center.

“The opening of the Vienna base reflects our strategy to focus on key markets with sustainable business potential”, said Karim Makhlouf CCO of SkyEurope. “We will aggressively enter Vienna with the lowest fares available and make flying affordable to everyone. SkyEurope stands for best in class fares, top quality, punctuality and attractiveness”, Makhlouf added.

Fares start at 19 € all inclusive

All SkyEurope flights for the summer season to and from Vienna are on sale as of today and can be booked on-line at skyeurope.com or via the central reservation center by calling +421 2 4850 4850.

Fares for all flights start at 19 €, including airport taxes and charges.

For businesses SkyEurope is offering a SkyCorporate programme, offering low business fares with maximum flexibility.

A study by OAG, the British travel information company, highlights the world's busiest route. Flights between Barcelona and Madrid are topping the list with around 920 flights a week. It has come out on top pressing the previous year leader, the Brazilian route between Sao Paolo and Rio de Janeiro, to the second position with its 880 flight per week. The third world busiest route is between Melbourne and Sydney (almost 800 flights per week), Djakarta- Surabaya - the fourth and Honolulu-Kahului - the fifth. The next five busiest routes (ranking 6 to 10) are Jeju-Seoul, Delhi-Mumbai, Sapporo-Tokyo, Cape Town-Johannesburg and Fukuoka-Tokyo. These statistics have been compiled by travel and transport information company OAG. OAG collates data from more than 1000 airlines, on a daily basis, and tracks around 28 million departures a year. For routes overall, the Asia region dominates with six of the top 10 busiest routes. In comparison, North America dominates the top 10 for routes where low cost carriers operate, with seven of the top 10. “It’s interesting to note there is very little movement year on year among the overall top 10 busiest routes, with Mumbai – Delhi the only ‘new entry’,” says Duncan Alexander, managing director of Business Development at OAG. Currently dubbed the ``bread and butter corridor’’ for Indian domestic airlines, 11 per cent of total seats per week are offered on the Mumbai-Delhi sector. And the numbers don't seem to be letting up. With over 600 flights per week, the total traffic between the national and financial capital contributes over 50 per cent of the total Indian air traffic. Flights between the two metros enjoy load factors between 75-80 per cent through the year. Source:OAG

Boeing announced on June 29 that SkyEurope Airlines, the multi-based Central European low-cost airline, has converted purchase rights for five Next-Generation 737-700s into orders. The airline now has a total order commitment for 21 Next-Generation 737 airplanes, through lease and direct purchase agreements, of which five have been delivered and are operating in the airline's all-Boeing fleet. The newly ordered airplanes, to be delivered in 2008, have an estimated value of US$ 295 million. All of SkyEurope's new airplanes are equipped with performance-enhancing Blended Winglets. "The introduction of the Next-Generation 737 in our fleet has generated tremendous positive response from our passengers", said Christian Mandl, CEO of SkyEurope Airlines. "Passengers love the spacious cabin and leather seats, while we benefit every day from the simplified and cost-effective operations," added Alain Skowronek, the airline's chairman. "The Boeing Next-Generation 737 is based on the premise of adding value to its operators through simplicity and reliability," said Marlin Dailey, vice president of Sales, Europe & Central Asia, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. "SkyEurope is already reaping the benefits of the 737's outstanding on-time performance, quick turnaround times and operational flexibility. It is extremely satisfying that SkyEurope attributes part of its success to the 737." SkyEurope Airlines, with its multi-hub philosophy, offers 70 routes from Budapest, Krakow, Warsaw, Prague and Bratislava to 37 destinations in 19 countries. As of May 31, 2006, the Next-Generation Boeing 737 has received orders for more than 3,200 units to carriers worldwide. Orders for this airplane family (the 737-600, -700, -800, -900, and -900ER) have eclipsed the 3,132 orders for the Classic 737 airplane family. The 737 is the preferred airplane for low-cost carriers. Almost 80 percent of the airplanes operated by the top 20 low-cost carriers are Boeing Next-Generation 737s.

SkyEurope Airlines, the largest low-cost airline in Central and Eastern Europe, reached another No1 when the 7th brand new Boeing 737-700 Next Generation landed at Bratislava airport on Saturday 27th of January 2007 at 6,53 p.m. after a record-breaking flyover of
8 382 miles without any fuel stop. Under the control of captain Peter Pelec the new addition into SkyEurope’s fleet jumped over the distance between American Seattle and Prague in just 10 hours and 10 minutes. It is the longest documented flyover of any Boeing 737-700NG in the commercial configuration.

The longest distance record flown by Boeing 737 type so far is 8 116 miles on the route Seattle-Berlin in 1998. SkyEurope not only broke the current world distance record, but also have flown its new Boeing home in the most economic way. „This record flyover required a lot of fuel planning and managing. During first four hours we faced a strong headwind and there was a lot of thinking and decision making just during the flight. Originally we wanted to make a fuel stop in Edinburgh, but due to a positive tailwind we could manage to fly directly to Prague,“ said Peter Pelec, Flight Operations Manager of SkyEurope.

SkyEurope will obtain 10 brand new Boeings 737-700 Next Generation in total this year and gradually introduce them into service in its bases of Bratislava, Budapest, Krakow, Prague and Vienna. As of the upcoming autumn SkyEurope Airlines will become the airline with the youngest and most modern fleet in Central and Eastern Europe. The new 737s are equipped with 149 highly elegant leather seats and a special Iacobucci espresso machine. SkyEurope is the only European airline offering freshly brewed real Italian coffee specialities on board. Thanks to the unique technical construction of blended winglets and engines Boeing 737-700NG represents one of the most economic and efficient models of its category.

Wizz Air - the largest low fare-low cost airline in Central and Eastern Europe – will establish its sixth operational base, at Bucharest Baneasa Aurel Vlaicu International Airport in May 2007. This decision was supported by both the magnitude of the operations launched on 15th January 2007 and the ambitious future plans.
“We are very pleased to welcome Romania in the EU. Among other important benefits, it frees the country of the regulatory burdens that protected the monopoly of high fare airlines. The ‘Open Skies’ enables us to launch today 7 new flights to 5 EU countries giving all Romanians easy access to fly safely, comfortably and most importantly at really low fares. 2007 will be a very busy year for us. We will soon open a base in Baneasa and we expect to carry close to 500 000 passengers on our Romanian routes within a year from today. By summer 2008, Wizz Air will become the largest low cost airline in Romania.” stated József Váradi, Chief Executive Officer of Wizz Air.
The operational base will accommodate one brand new Airbus A320 aircraft, with 180 comfortable leather seats on board. Wizz Air will employ local pilots and cabin attendants for which the recruitment is ongoing. The airline has already established operational bases in Katowice, Warsaw, Gdansk, Budapest and Sofia.

Wizz Air launches the following flights:
From To Starting
Bucharest - Baneasa Barcelona
Bucharest - Baneasa Budapest
Bucharest - Baneasa Dortmund
Bucharest - Baneasa London - Luton
Bucharest - Baneasa Rome - Ciampino
Târgu Mures Barcelona
Târgu Mures Rome - Ciampino

The Târgu Mures – Budapest flight is already in operation from July 2006.
To celebrate the big launch Wizz Air gave away 700 free tickets yesterday on the George Enescu Square in Bucharest. The celebration continues this week-end in Târgu Mures with 300 more free tickets to be distributed.

Wizz Air, Central and Eastern Europe's largest low-fare, low-cost airline, has signed an order to increase its all-Airbus fleet with 20 additional A320s at Farnborough Airshow (England), following the airline's order of 12 A320 aircraft plus 12 options a year ago.

All the aircraft will be powered by International Aero Engines V2500 and be configured in a comfortable single-class layout, seating up to 180 passengers. Deliveries are scheduled from 2009 to 2011.

The new order facilitates the airline's robust growth plan in Central and Eastern Europe to meet the ever increasing demand for air travel in the region in the next years.
Since starting operations in May 2004, Wizz Air has become the leading low-cost airline in Poland, Hungary and Bulgaria, and just earlier this year launched operations in Croatia, Slovenia and Romania. This achievement that the carrier acknowledges is due to - amongst others - the consistently high standard of operational service and comfort the A320 aircraft deliver.

"We are committed to Airbus and IAE as well and their product, the V2500-A5 powered A320 aircraft that has been a significant pillar of our success to-date. Our all common A320 fleet allows us to achieve the lowest unit cost in the region while maintaining operational reliability and customer service excellence. This new aircraft order keeps Wizz Air on track to be the single largest airline in Central and Eastern Europe, both in terms of fleet size and carried passengers. By 2012 Wizz Air will operate up to 53 A320 aircraft." said József Váradi, Chief Executive Officer of Wizz Air.

Christian Streiff, Airbus President and CEO added: "We are very pleased to see that Wizz Air is putting its trust once again in Airbus for the expansion of its fleet. We are confident that the economics and excellent passenger appeal of our airliners will help Wizz Air to even further strengthen its position in Central and Eastern Europe".

Mark King, President and CEO of IAE said: "We are delighted to have played a key part in the rapid growth of Wizz Air in such a highly competitive environment - and look forward to continuing the on-going success story with this fleet expansion backed by a V2500SelectSM aftermarket agreement. The 'Wizz Air experience' for passengers is focused on providing great service and value for money - attributes that have also become key factors in the success of IAE and the V2500".

FlyBalaton is not only a new airfield, but a real airport on the shore of Lake Balaton - a natural wonder. Those who are into flying may have a rest and refresh themselves here as well as plan their stay here getting everything to make their dreams come true.

FlyBalaton is one of Hungary's fastest growing airports. Thanks to its bright modern facilities, it is able to deal with large volumes of passengers and cargo, destined for and departing from the western region of Hungary.

Our main activities include:

- Quick and efficient passenger handling
- Aircraft ground handling
- General aviation services
- Cargo services
- Developments
- Airport security

Cape Clear Aviation is the developer and operator of FlyBalaton and is a consortium of Irish and Hungarian professionals who bring a range of expertise to the Airport.
Along with Debrecen and Budapest airports, FlyBalaton has an international designation and is operational throughout the year for all kinds of aviation activity.
The local authorities are supportive of our efforts aimed at becoming one of the leading Central-European regional airports.
It is also important to encourage more growth and a greater choice of airlines and destinations from FlyBalaton.

FlyBalaton history

The airport - due to the geo-strategic position of Sármellék - was built during the sixties as a military base by the Russian army in Hungary.
In 1991 when the army left Hungary, the Russian military personnel left the airport and took most of the equipment, leaving behind a runway, approx. 60 completely empty barracks and hangars.
In 2003, the Hungarian state transferred the airport into the ownership of the 2 villages located in its vicinity, but it represented a financial and administrative burden for them.
Since 1991 to present date, the airport has been operating commercial and military flights and depended heavily on the tourism cycles related to Lake Balaton as well as the resorts and spas in the area.

The territory of the Airport is owned by the two villages of Sármellék and Zalavár. Since late 2004, when an Irish-Hungarian joint venture (Cape Clear Aviation - CCA) obtained, for the following 99 years, full rights to operate and develop the Airport in western Hungary, the following promising activities confirm our commitment:

May 2005 - Charters from five German and two Danish destinations
June 2005 - Helvetic airlines' scheduled flight between FlyBalaton and Zurich
June 2005 - Equipment with advanced flying security systems (ILS, runway lights)
July 2005 - Malév introduces a new scheduled flight between FlyBalaton and Stuttgart
Sept. 2005 - Construction of the new terminal building is commenced
Dec. 2005 - Ryanair announced London-FlyBalaton flights

Slovak Airlines go bankrupt

Austrian Airlines terminates Slovak Airlines flights on govt contract breach
01.31.07, 6:34 AM ET

VIENNA (AFX) - Austrian Airlines yesterday terminated all scheduled flights of its unit Slovak Airlines after the Slovakian government, which holds a 38 pct stake in the company, failed to honour a debt-related contract agreement.

In January 2005, AUA bought a 62 pct holding in Slovak Airlines via a capital increase on the precondition the Slovakian government would take over the airline's debts of around 6 mln eur. These debts were due to be settled last spring.

Acting within the framework of EU law, AUA said it stopped financially supporting the airline on Jan 17, after the Slovakian government ignored the last extension deadline to Dec 31.

'In what appears to be a conscious and prolonged delaying tactic demonstrating a lack of readiness to pay, there is no prospect of a restructuring of the company,' said AUA in a statement.

The two aircraft, a Fokker 100 and Boeing 737 300, in Slovak Airlines' possession were also promptly recalled by AUA.

In 2006, a record number of 11 581 511 passengers traveled through the Prague International Airport. This is an increase of 7.5% compared to 2005, when 10.7 million passengers passed through the gates of the airport.

Evaluation of the operating results of the Prague Airport confirmed a dynamic increase in demand from airlines. A total number of 11 581 511 travelers used its services in 2006, i.e. twice as many as in 2000 and three times as many as in 1996.

In cooperation with the airline companies, Prague Airport is extending the network of destinations to which travelers can fly by direct lines. While this number equaled 112 in 2005, it was 114 a year later and a total of 118 direct lines are planned this year.

Slovak Airlines go bankrupt

Slovak Airlines (SA) is a solvent company, able to pay its liabilities and cover its operational costs, SA spokesperson Tatiana Jonakova told SLOVAKIA on Wednesday, rejecting information in the Austrian media that SA could file for bankruptcy on Wednesday.
"I have no information concerning SA declaring bankruptcy," said Jonakova.
The speculation in the Austrian media began after the Slovak Government failed to pay off SA's old debts worth Sk171 million (€4.86 million), and the airline's majority owner Austrian Airlines decided to take back two of the three aircraft that SA was using.
The debts concerned were created before the investor took over SA - which was previously owned by the state - in autumn 2004. The aircraft concerned are a Fokker 100 and a Boeing 737-300.
[It was also reported on Wednesday that Slovak Airlines is stopping its regular flights from Slovakia to Brussels and Moscow. - ed. note]
Jonakova confirmed that SA will continue to operate with the single aircraft that the company has at its disposal at the moment. "We'll try to obtain one more plane by May, so that we can secure charter flights for the summer season, a profitable time of year for us," she said.

Frantisek Stolarik, chief executive and head of the Letisko M. R. Stefanika – Airport Bratislava board of directors and Transport Minister Lubomir Vazny introduced a strategic plan for the airport’s development on Thursday. The strategy counts with a new terminal. The Bratislava airport should open it in the spring of 2011. The minister informed that that the terminal’s annual capacity should be around four million passengers. However the architectural project of the terminal does not exist yet and its exact location is unknown as well. This is because construction of the terminal should be linked to new transport infrastructure, the plan for which should be confirmed in a few weeks. Mr. Vazny estimates the costs of the new terminal at more than SKK 2.6 billion. The airport operator should built it from its own sources and partly from loans.

Japan Airlines (JAL), Malév Hungarian Airlines and Royal Jordanian Airlines will start offering oneworldŽ services and benefits from 1 April 2007 in the biggest expansion of the world's leading quality global airline alliance since its launch eight years ago today.

Five other members of the JAL Group will join oneworld alongside Japan Airlines on the same day, as affiliates -JALways, Japan Asia Airways, JAL Express, J-AIR and Japan Transocean Air.

So, from 1 April 2007 some 20 million frequent flyers from all of these airlines will be able to earn and redeem mileage awards on all other oneworld carriers. This includes the more than 19.5 million members of the JAL Mileage Bank (JMB) frequent flyer programme, 75,000 members from Malév's Duna Club, and the 90,000 members of Royal Jordanian's Royal Plus.

Top-tier (Emerald and Sapphire) members will also have access to the 400 airport lounges worldwide offered by the alliance's airlines.

Eligible members of these three programmes will soon be sent new membership cards, bearing the oneworld logo, to ensure they receive their alliance benefits from 1 April.

From the same date, members of the established oneworld airlines' frequent flyer programmes will be able to earn and redeem awards and receive all other oneworld benefits on these new recruits, whose networks will also be covered by oneworld's extensive range of alliance fares and sales products.

Also on 1 April 2007, as previously announced, Aer Lingus will withdraw from oneworld, with its focus on low fare point-to-point passengers no longer in line with oneworld's strategy of providing services for premium, multi-sector, frequent, international travellers.

Three other airlines are lining up to become part of oneworld in 2007 - Dragonair, LAN Argentina and LAN Ecuador, all as affiliate members. Joining dates for these three carriers will be announced in due course.

These overall changes in membership will expand the size of the alliance substantially, to:

Almost 700 airports, around a hundred more than now.
Nearly 150 countries.
9,000 daily departures, a thousand more than today.
Around 315 million passengers, 65 million more than at present.
265,000 employees.
Almost 2,500 aircraft.
US$85 billion revenues, up by a third.
oneworld Managing Partner John McCulloch said: "Adding Japan Airlines, Malév and Royal Jordanian represents oneworld's biggest expansion since the alliance was launched eight years ago today. We are very much looking forward to welcoming them and their customers on board from 1 April. Their addition will broaden our network coverage in three of the fastest growing regions for air travel and further strengthen oneworld's position as the world's leading quality airline alliance."

JAL Group Chief Executive Haruka Nishimatsu said: "We are delighted to announce that JAL will become a member of oneworld on April 1. By joining hands with the alliance's nine other world-class airlines, we will be able further to strengthen the quality of our products and services, providing our customers with greater convenience, comfort, value and choice throughout the alliance's comprehensive global network. Our strong market presence in Japan and elsewhere in Asia will enable us to take a leading role in oneworld's strategy, and significantly enhance the competitiveness of this leading quality global alliance."

Malév Chief Executive Janos Gonci said: "Following almost two intensive years of preparation for joining oneworld, my team and I are thrilled that the big day is almost upon us and we can't wait to be fully fledged members of the alliance. We are convinced that oneworld membership is a win-win-win for Malév, for oneworld and, most importantly, for all our customers the world over."

Royal Jordanian Chief Executive Samer Majali said: "Membership of oneworld will create extensive opportunities for Royal Jordanian that will enable our airline to offer our customers greater and smoother access to a substantially more diverse network of destinations, with the help of our excellent stable of partners. Through RJ's own wide-ranging regional network, we will provide the other oneworld airlines with markedly increased reach in the fast growing Middle East."

Work is well advanced in linking up the IT systems of the recruits to those of oneworld's established members, and to bring their various internal processes and procedures into line with the alliance's requirements, to enable them to offer the alliance's services and benefits from the start of 1 April.

Of the 24 interline e-ticketing (IET) links required to enable passengers to transfer between their flights using just electronic tickets, without the need for a traditional paper ticket, only three remain to be cut over. Malév already offers (IET) with all the other oneworld members. The three outstanding IET connections will be completed in the coming weeks.

oneworld has been the only alliance with interline e-ticketing (IET) between all of its partners since April 2005.

JAL, Malév and Royal Jordanian have already joined the alliance's Global Explorer round-the-world fare product, which already included some other carriers which are not part of the alliance. They will have the alliance's full range of alliance fares and sales products extended to them on 1 April.

American Airlines and Cathay Pacific last month transferred from Terminal 1 to Terminal 2 at JAL's main international hub Tokyo Narita, where they now operate alongside the Japanese airline. Qantas was already based there and Finnair will join them in the coming weeks. This represents the alliance's biggest consolidation project in the Asia-Pacific region, substantially smoothing and speeding connections for passengers transferring there between these airline's flights.

Massive employee training and communications programmes are now underway at the recruits and the alliance's existing members, to ensure that their staff worldwide are ready to provide oneworld's customer services and benefits across the expanded alliance from 1 April.

The three airlines will be oneworld's first new recruits for more than six years. In the interim, the alliance's focus was on helping its member airlines weather the worst financial crisis the industry has faced. Its success in this is reflected in the fact that oneworld is the only alliance whose members collectively achieved a profit in their latest full financial years – of US$1.8 billion net, while SkyTeam members lost nearly US$5 billion and Star's plunged more than US$20 billion into the red.

About oneworld and its new members

Japan Airlines was the largest airline in the world not aligned to a multilateral global alliance until it lined up to join oneworld. It is the biggest carrier in the Asia-Pacific region and one of the top airlines in the world on any count. On virtually every measure, it becomes one of the biggest three airlines in oneworld.

With its five oneworld affiliates, it will add nearly 50 destinations to the alliance network - almost 40 of them in Japan, and the rest in China and elsewhere in Asia. JAL will bring one new territory onto the oneworld map, in Guam.

American Airlines is acting as its oneworld sponsor, supporting it in the alliance joining process.

Malév Hungarian Airlines, is one of the highest quality carriers in Central and Eastern Europe. Its Budapest base provides oneworld with one of the best hubs in that region, which is one of the fastest growing worldwide for air travel. The airline's network will considerably expand oneworld's presence in that part of the world.

It adds ten cities to the oneworld network, all of them in Central and Eastern Europe, and one country, the Republic of Macedonia.

Finnair is acting as its oneworld sponsor.

Royal Jordanian is the first airline from the Middle East to find a home with any of the global airline alliances. Its Amman base provides oneworld with one of the best hubs for traveling around the region - the world's fastest growing for air travel - where the airline's network is focused.

It adds 11 cities to the oneworld network, all of them in Middle East, and two countries - Iraq and Yemen.

British Airways is acting as its oneworld sponsor.

The oneworld alliance enables its member airlines to offer their customers more services and benefits than any airline can provide on its own. These include a broader route network, opportunities to earn and redeem frequent flyer miles and points across the combined oneworld network and more airport lounges.

Its established members comprise American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Finnair, Iberia, LAN and Qantas, plus their dozen affiliates.

It is, from today, the only global airline alliance with a member in the Americas south of Mexico. It was already the only alliance with a member from Australia.

oneworld was voted the World's Leading Airline Alliance for the fourth year running in the 2006 World Travel Awards, based on votes cast by some 170,000 travel professionals, including more than 110,000 travel agents in 200 countries.

Buyers 'eye Prague airport bid'

A number of investment groups are eyeing the possible purchase of Prague Airport, according to a Czech report.

Australia's Macquarie Bank and German groups Hochtief and Fraport are among the interested parties, said weekly magazine Tyden.

Prague-Ruzyne airport is currently in the hands of the Czech government.

It has been expanding in recent years, handling 11.5 million passengers in 2006, while it has set a target of 20 million passengers by 2020.

A new terminal was opened a year ago - but a new runway is needed to reach its passenger number goals.

"It is an interesting opportunity for us," Hochtief Airport spokeswoman Donatella Gasser told the magazine. "Prague airport has great potential."

Meanwhile, Macquarie - which owns airports in Europe, including Bristol - has also expressed an interest -according to Tyden.

"We are major airport investors and that is why we examine all the possibilities that come up around the world," spokeswoman Alison Jefferis said.

Wolfgang Schwalm of Fraport, which owns Frankfurt airport, said the firm was looking for "a transaction in the European space".

Czech air force receives new Airbuses

The Czech Chief of Staff Pavel Stefka and other Czech military commanders has ceremonially taken over a new Airbus A-319 CJ aircraft for transport of constitutional officials and Czech soldiers heading for foreign missions today.

The Airbus arrived in the Czech Republic last week. Another one is to be handed over in September. The country paid some 3 billion crowns for both planes.

Both planes will be based at the Prague-Kbely military airport. The Airbuses replace the Russian-made Tu-154s.

The Airbus can carry 44 constitutional officers. However, it can be reshaped within 24 hours to transport one hundred soldiers.

While two pilots, a navigator, a telegraphist and a technician are needed in the Tu-154 cockpit, there are just two pilots in the Airbus.

Unlike the Russian aircraft, the Airbuses are also able to reach the US, Afghanistan and Iraq without stopover, have lower consumption of fuel and are lighter.

The decision about the government flight was made in 2005 following a series of defects of the Russian aircraft during politicians' foreign trips.

I really like how the airshow (the flight path map displayed on the overhead displays in the cabin) is made out of satelite maps instead of standard maps. I've never seen this in a commercial airliner. Also, a great colour scheme on that 319CJ.

SEATTLE, Feb. 19, 2007 -- Boeing [NYSE:BA] and LOT Polish Airlines announced today that the airline has increased its 787 Dreamliner order by one additional aircraft, bringing its total 787 order to eight airplanes. In 2005, LOT placed an order for seven 787s, with delivery positions beginning in 2008.

Today's order, valued at $153 million at list prices, was booked previously on Boeing's Orders and Deliveries website, attributed to an unidentified customer.

"We are delighted with the steady progress we're witnessing on the 787 Program and are eager to see the first 787 this year," said Marek Mazur, chief executive officer of LOT Polish Airlines. "Furthermore, we are making excellent progress in preparing for the arrival of the first 787 in our fleet in 2008. We take great pride in being the first European carrier to operate the world's newest, most advanced airplane."

The 787 will revolutionize the customer experience for LOT's passengers. Passengers will enjoy an innovative new interior environment with higher humidity, wider seats and aisles, and larger windows, greatly improving the overall flying experience.

"This follow-on order is a wonderful confirmation of the outstanding value LOT places on the 787," said Marlin Dailey, vice president of Sales for Europe, Russia and Central Asia. "A dedicated team from Boeing and LOT, one of our early European customers on the program, is making great progress for the introduction of the 787 into their fleet".

The Boeing 787 Dreamliner, with first delivery scheduled for 2008, provides passengers with a better flying experience and operators with a more efficient commercial jetliner. Including today's order by LOT, 37 customers have logged 468 orders and commitments worth more than $73 billion at current list prices since the 787 launch in April 2004, making the Dreamliner the most successful commercial airplane launch in history.

Cargo boom at Ferihegy in 2006

Budapest, 14 February, 2007. – Budapest Airport’s cargo traffic increased by 20.8% (15,155 tonnes) to 88,188 tonnes in 2006. This is double the annual average 10% rate of cargo growth during the past ten years.

Hungary’s major air cargo partner is the European Union, accounting for 35.3% of all cargo traffic. Germany, the largest cargo destination, accounted for 11.2% of overall cargo. Cargo carried between Hungary and the Benelux countries was also significant, with more than 4,100 tonnes of cargo transported between Belgium and Hungary, 3,600 tonnes to and from Luxemburg and 2,100 tonnes to and from the Netherlands.

Cargo traffic between Central Asia and Hungary also increased by 8.1%, to 4,100 tonnes, while air cargo between Hungary and China reached 2,869 tonnes.

CEO, BA, Stewart Wingate said: “2006 was a boom year for cargo at Ferihegy, which is not just good news for Budapest Airport, but great news for Hungarian business and for the competitiveness of the Hungarian economy.

“More than half of Hungary’s air cargo arrives into Hungary by road from Vienna Airport, which adds unnecessary cost and time to Hungary’s businesses. So the growth of air cargo at Ferihegy, supported by Budapest Airport’s cargo development programme, will enable Hungarian businesses to compete much more effectively in world markets, supporting tens of thousands of jobs throughout Hungary.

“Budapest Airport’s plans to expand freighter cargo capacity and to support the growth of freight carried in the belly of passenger jets will help Ferihegy to become a major cargo hub in Central Europe.”

Following tributes in America and Europe, Malév now receives award in Hungary

Tourism professionals, business frequent flyers, corporate managers and travellers have voted Malév Airline of the Year for 2006. The result of the public opinion survey carried out by Hungarian Az Utazó (Traveller) magazine means this is the third year in succession that the national airline has received this distinction.
Malév won the 2006 Airline of the Year award, which Dr. István Újhelyi, state secretary in the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development, presented to the representative of the airline at a ceremony held today. The public opinion survey conducted by Az Utazó magazine asked tourism professionals, business frequent flyers and readers of the magazine to name the classical airline operating flights to Hungary which they considered provided the highest standard of service. Those responding to the poll once again pointed to Malév as being the very best in 2006. The Hungarian national airline picked up the same award last year and the year before in recognition of its outstanding quality service. Malév has always devoted considerable attention to the provision of quality services both on the ground and in flight. Onboard, Malév passengers are served a range of carefully prepared cooked and cold dishes, desserts, fruit and drinks. The airline's professionally trained, hospitable and welcoming flight attendants make time spent onboard more than a mere flight. As well as the excellent catering and services provided to customers travelling on one of Europe's most youthful fleet of Boeings, the Hungarian flag carrier also offers highly competitive fares and a flexible timetable.
Malév also received two international awards at the beginning of 2007. The airline's CEO flew to New York at the end of January to receive the "Best Airline in Eastern Europe" 2006 prize from American travel magazine Global Traveler, while a poll carried out by Irish Travel Trade News (involving owners, managers and employees of IATA travel agencies in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland) found Malév to be the second best airline in Europe.

Hungary national airline sold off

Malev - Hungary's debt-ridden national airline - has been privatised.
Hungarian consortium Airbridge, backed by Russian carrier KrasAir, has bought the government's 99.95% stake in Malev for 200m forint ($1.04m; Ł530,000).

The consortium will also make a cash injection and repay some of its 32bn forint (Ł85m) debt.

O***orld becomes ten of the world's biggest and best airlines as Japan Airlines, Malév and Royal Jordanian board

o***orldŽ today completed the biggest expansion in its history with Japan Airlines, Malév Hungarian Airlines and Royal Jordanian all now offering the alliance's services and benefits as full members.

Seven other airlines have joined at the same time as affiliate members - LAN Argentina and LAN Ecuador and JAL associates JALways, Japan Asia Airways, JAL Express, J-AIR and Japan Transocean Air.

Their addition has expanded o***orld substantially, to:

Almost 700 airports, around a hundred more than now.
Nearly 150 countries.
9,000 daily departures, a thousand more than today.
Around 315 million passengers, 65 million more than at present.
265,000 employees.
Almost 2,500 aircraft.
Nearly US$90 billion annual revenues, up by a third.
Members of the JAL Mileage Bank (JMB), Malév Duna Club and Royal Jordanian Royal Plus frequent flyer programmes can now earn and redeem mileage awards on all other o***orld carriers.

JAL Global Club Premier, JMB Diamond and Sapphire, Malév Duna Platinum and Gold and Royal Jordanian Platinum and Gold Plus cardholders can also now gain access to the 400 airport lounges worldwide offered by the alliance's airlines.

Frequent flyer programme members of the established o***orld airlines - American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific Airways, Finnair, Iberia, LAN Airlines and Qantas - can now earn and redeem awards and receive all other o***orld benefits on JAL, Malév, Royal Jordanian, LAN Argentina and LAN Ecuador.

The networks of these airline recruits are also now covered by o***orld's extensive range of alliance fares and sales products.

o***orld has been the only global airline alliance with the customer convenience of interline e-ticketing between all its partners for two years already, enabling passengers to transfer between its airlines' flights without the need for traditional paper tickets.

The same convenience is extended across the alliance's recruits as they board the grouping, as part of a comprehensive programme which has seen all their internal processes and procedures brought into line with the alliance's requirements.

Tens of thousands of employees from the airlines have participated in a special training programme to ensure they can deliver the alliance's services and benefits from Day One, and dozens of its IT systems linked to those at the other o***orld airlines.

Signage at the 700 airports served by the alliance's member airlines and at hundreds of sales outlets worldwide will be changed from today to reflect o***orld's *** membership line-up.

o***orld Managing Partner John McCulloch said: "Today is a truly historic day for the o***orld alliance, for our *** member airlines and for our customers worldwide. Our recruits have enabled o***orld to broaden its coverage in three of the world's fastest growing regions for air travel. We have added the quality and strength of more great brands to the world's leading airline alliance, and further increased the value, choice and range that we offer our o***orld customers."

JAL Group Chief Executive Haruka Nishimatsu said: "Becoming part of o***orld today represents an historic milestone for Japan Airlines - and a huge opportunity for JAL. It means we can offer our customers more choice, convenience, and better value - quality air travel options and benefits beyond the reach of any individual airline or bilateral partnership, across all the alliance's world-class member airlines and their affiliates. I am confident that o***orld will equally benefit from having us in its team."

Malév Chief Executive János Gönci said: "All of us at Malév are thrilled that this great day has finally arrived. We are very proud to have joined the world's leading airline alliance as its representative from Central and East Europe. Our months of preparation have confirmed our belief that o***orld and its member airlines are outstanding professionals and industry leaders, and we are certain that this follows through to the benefit of the customers of o***orld the world over. Malév's joining of the alliance will open up the power of o***orld to even more customers in even more markets than ever before"

Royal Jordanian Chief Executive Samer Majali said: "Royal Jordanian is delighted to have become part of o***orld - as the first airline from the Middle East to join any of the global airline alliances. We will benefit considerably from our membership - through increased revenues, the ability to reduce costs and the opportunities to work together in all sorts of areas with some of the most highly regarded businesses in this industry. We also believe Royal Jordanian adds considerable value to o***orld, strengthening its network significantly in the world's fastest growing region for air travel demand."

Dragonair, named China's best airline for the past five years by the SkyTrax airline quality organisation and serving more destinations in Mainland China then any other airline based outside the mainland, will join o***orld as an affiliate member later this year.

Also from today, Aer Lingus has withdrawn from o***orld, with its low-fare, point-to-point strategy no longer in line with the alliance's main focus on multi-sector, premium, frequent, international travellers.

About Japan Airlines

JAL was the largest airline in the world not aligned to a multilateral global alliance until it lined up to join o***orld. It is the biggest carrier in the Asia-Pacific region and one of the top airlines in the world on any count. On virtually every measure, it becomes one of the biggest three airlines in o***orld.

With its five o***orld affiliates, it serves almost 90 destinations in 24 countries. It has added nearly 50 airports to the alliance network - almost 40 of them in Japan, and the rest in China and elsewhere in Asia. It has brought one *** territory onto the o***orld map, in Guam.

It operates more than 250 aircraft and earned revenues last year of JPY2.2 trillion (US$20 billion).

About Malév Hungarian Airlines

Malév serves around 60 destinations in 35 countries, mainly in Europe. Its Budapest hub will become o***orld's primary gateway to Central and Eastern Europe. Malév adds ten cities to the o***orld network, all of them in Central and Eastern Europe, and two countries – Montenegro and the Republic of Macedonia.

With some 3,000 staff, Malév carried more than 3 million passengers in 2006. Its fleet comprises some 30 aircraft, with an average age of just five years old. It earned revenues last year of US$690 million.

It was recently named Best Airline in East Europe by North American magazine Global Traveler and has been voted Best Airline of the Year for the past three years running by travel agents, business people and other travellers in a poll by Hungary's Az Utazó (The Traveller) magazine.

About Royal Jordanian

Royal Jordanian serves more than 50 destinations in 33 countries, including 27 points in the Levant, Middle East, Gulf and North Africa, along with points in Asia, Europe and North America. It operates a fleet of almost 25 aircraft, most of them delivered in the past year or so - including Airbus A340s, A321s and A320s and Embraer 195s. Last year, the airline boarded 1.7 million passengers and earned revenues of US$546 million.

Royal Jordanian received the prestigious Phoenix Award from Air Transport World earlier this year and a similar award from the Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation late in 2006, both in recognition of its successful restructuring programme which has seen the company restored to profitability, re-equipped with a *** fleet and with a refocused network.

About LAN Argentina and LAN Ecuador

LAN Argentina launched passenger and cargo services in June 2005. Today it operates a comprehensive domestic network serving ten points within Argentina and international services, with a fleet of five Airbus A320s, and two Boeing 767-300s.

LAN Ecuador launched passenger and cargo services in ***** 2003. Today it operates from hubs at Quito and Guayaquil to Buenos Aires, Madrid, Miami, *** **** and Santiago, with Airbus A320s and Boeing 767-300s.

The LAN alliance overall operates 70 passenger aircraft, carrying some 9 million passengers in 2006, with revenues in 2006 totalling US$3 billion. It is regularly named best airline in Latin America in the various industry award schemes.

They make o***orld the only global alliance with any airline members from the Americas south of Mexico.

About o***orld

o***orld enables its member airlines to offer their customers more services and benefits than any airline can provide on its own. These include a broader route network, opportunities to earn and redeem frequent flyer miles and points across the combined o***orld network and more airport lounges.

It is the only alliance whose members collectively achieved a profit in their latest full financial years, and was voted the World's Leading Airline Alliance for the fourth year running in the 2006 World Travel Awards, based on votes cast by some 170,000 travel professionals, including more than 110,000 travel agents in 200 countries.

Az AiRUnion előzetes megállapodást kötött tavaly júliusban 15 darab SSJ megvásárlására a Sukhoi (Szuhoj) polgári repülőgépeit fejlesztő orosz céggel, egyben elővételi jogot szerezve további 15 darab ilyen gépre.

new destination from Bratislava Airport

Ryanair - Bremen
Aeroflot - Moscow
Air Slovakia - New York, Toronto
Air Brussels - Brussels
Skyeurope - maybe Moscow, Petersburg, Kiev
and mabye Hong-Kong

Letisko chystá nové destinácie
Otvorenie novej linky z Bratislavy do Brém včera oznámila letecká spoločnosť Ryanair. Šiesta pravidelná linka nízkonákladových aeroliniek bude uvedená do prevádzky 25. septembra.

Ryanair v súčasnosti z Bratislavy lieta do piatich európskych miest. Ešte v tomto roku chce oznámiť otvorenie siedmej bratislavskej destinácie a s vedením letiska rokuje aj o možnom zriadení leteckej základne u nás.

Moskva a Brusel
Zaoceánske lety do New Yorku a Toronta má už od júla začať prevádzkovať letecká spoločnosť Air Slovakia.
Informácie HN o pripravovaných linkách SkyEurope do Petrohradu a Kyjeva hovorkyňa SkyEurope Gabriela Horváthová zatiaľ odmietla komentovať.

Predstavitelia hongkonského letiska majú navyše záujem o rozvoj osobnej leteckej dopravy medzi Bratislavou a juhočínskou metropolou. Prípadné uzavretie tejto dohody si vyžiada vysoké investície do zariadení na prepravu, skladovanie a odbavenie nákladu," poznamenal na margo rokovaní výkonný riaditeľ bratislavského letiska František Stolárik.

Icelandair to buy Czech airline Travel Service; to take initial 50 pct stake
http://www.icelandairgroup.com/servlet/file/preview.jpg?ITEM_ENT_ID=127531&COLLSPEC_ENT_ID=653&FILE_SERVICE_CONF_ID=374

Icelandair Group has signed a letter of intent for acquisition of the Czech airline Travel Service, the largest private airline in the Czech Republic. Travel Service operates charter flights to and from Prague and Budapest and also owns and operates the low cost airline Smart Wings. The turnover of Travel Service in 2006 was ISK 18 billion (EUR 190 Million). The company operates a total of 12 Boeing 737-800 and 737-500 passenger aircraft, carried over 1.8 million passengers last year and flies to multiple destinations on four continents.

Jón Karl Ólafsson, the CEO of Icelandair Group comments “This letter of intent is in accordance with Icelandair Group’s intention of growing in the international charter flights sector. We have been looking towards Eastern Europe where we think that we have good business opportunities with our knowledge and experience. Last year we acquired the Latvian Airline Latcharter, which has been a success story, and now we take a big step even further in this direction. It is obvious that if Icelandair Group acquires Travel Service, it will grow fast this year. This airline is, regarding number of passengers and fleet, close to Icelandair’s scheduled operations in size.

We consider this a good investment for Icelandair Group. Travel Service is a solidly operated airline and its management and current owners will continue to work with us, which is invaluable in a transaction like this. The airline has a good and increasing position in the charter and low cost market in Eastern Europe, which is an interesting and fast growing market. On the other hand we see considerable synergy effects with our current charter and ACMI operations. The company operates in various fields, in charter and ACMI flights, in scheduled airline operation under a strong brand, Smart Wings, and is launching private jet operations, which is a rapidly growing market. The company has ambitious future plans, as can be seen by its orders of Boeing 737-900 and Boeing 787 Dreamliner Aircraft” comments Jón Karl Ólafsson.

Wizz Air, the largest low cost airline in Central and Eastern Europe has taken delivery of the first of 32 directly purchased A320s, featuring the all new A320 Family new cabin, giving passengers more space and a quieter travel experience. The latest A320 models also feature additional advanced aerodynamics helping reduce fuel burn even further.
Similarly to all of Wizz Air’s fleet, this aircraft will be powered by International Aero Engines V2500 and will be configured in a comfortable single-class layout seating 180 passengers.
Upon completion of deliveries of all the 32 orders and the additional 12 options, Wizz Air would be operating 53 aircraft by 2011. The continuous deliveries over the next 5 years ensure Wizz Air will keep operating one the youngest and most modern aircraft fleets in the world. Wizz Air, which already operates a young Airbus fleet of nine A320s, will be using the new aircraft to reinforce its leadership in its existing markets in CEE as well as expand into new geographies.
“We are committed to IAE powered Airbus aircraft that has been a significant pillar of our success to-date. Our all common A320 fleet allows us to achieve the lowest unit cost in the region while maintaining operational reliability and customer service excellence. This new aircraft not only provides the highest efficiency but gives us an extra edge of even superior comfort of the new new cabin to our passengers. We continue to be right on track to become the single largest airline in Central and Eastern Europe, both in terms of fleet size and carried passengers.” said József Váradi, Chief Executive Officer of Wizz Air.
“Wizz Air, the successful low cost carrier for Central and Eastern Europe proves us right with their choice of the A320. Basing its operation on the best selling single aisle aircraft family, Wizz Air shows its dedication to its customers in offering the latest Airbus technology. Part of Airbus’ non-stop innovation, the A320 featuring the new cabin offers the lowest operation cost for the highest passenger comfort.” said John Leahy, Airbus Chief Operating Officer, Customers.
Features: The new cabin, as the latest A320 innovation, effectively reinforces the high level of passenger comfort. The new design gives more space at shoulder level, 15% more useable overhead stowage volume and a measurable noise reduction in the cabin, combined with state of the art design features. Furthermore, material weight reduction in the cabin makes the aircraft more fuel efficient, a benefit in terms of operational costs and environmental progress.
Over 5000 Airbus A320 Family have been sold and over 3000 delivered to more than 180 customers and operators worldwide, making it the world’s best selling single aircraft family ever.

Budapest Airport welcomes Ryanair to Ferihegy

17 May, 2007, Budapest – Ryanair, one of Europe’s leading low-cost airlines, announced today that it would start services from Budapest in the autumn with the launch of its first route from Budapest to the UK’s Nottingham East Midlands Airport. The four weekly services (Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays) will start as of 31 October, 2007.

Ryanair would be the newest airline to start services from Budapest Airport. From the winter schedule, ten low-cost airlines would offer flights to 52 destinations within Europe.

Budapest Airport’s route network would be also expanding further as Nottingham is a brand-new destination from Ferihegy. From the winter schedule three cities in the UK (London, Manchester and Nottingham) will be accessible by aircraft from Ferihegy.

Stewart Wingate, CEO Budapest Airport said: „This is great news for Ferihegy and we are delighted that Ryanair has announced its intention to operate from Budapest Airport. This shows that there is still huge potential in the Hungarian low cost market.

“Ryanair will offer new travel opportunities for Hungarian passengers, and will bring many passengers from the UK Midland catchments area to Budapest.

“It would also increase competition among low cost carriers, which is good news for our passengers, because the greater the competition the lower the price is.

“We worked hard to attract Ryanair and we are looking forward to starting the detailed negotiations with the airline. We will keep working to bring more and more airlines, flights and passengers to Ferihegy to make Budapest Airport the most successful airport in Central Europe.”

Some news about Bratislava airport - a-port should obtain from 4 to 5 mld. SK anually till 2010...hopefully not just promises from our politicians coz that airport really needs huge investments.

Podľa odhadu úradu by mali do najväčšieho slovenského letiska do konca roka 2010 smerovať investície štyri až päť miliárd korún ročne.

Väčšinu akcií letiskovej spoločnosti malo vlani získať konzorcium TwoOne pod vedením rakúskeho letiska a finančnej skupiny Penta. Vláda Roberta Fica však predaj zrušila.

Podľa Vážneho by malo byť letisko v Bratislave do konca desaťročia pripravené na vybavenie 3,2 až 3,4 milióna cestujúcich ročne. "Zatiaľ máme pretlak ponúk na získanie potrebných cudzích zdrojov.

Nemáme problém so zabezpečením úveru pre letisko," ubezpečoval minister.

Manažment to zdôvodnil napríklad zastavením liniek Slovenských aerolínií a menším počtom cestujúcich, ktorých prepravil nízkonákladový dopravca SkyEurope po tom, čo začal lietať z neďalekej Viedne.

HOCHTIEF AirPort Consortium takes over Budapest Airport

Dr. Reinhard Kalenda, CEO of HOCHTIEF AirPort is appointed as new CEO

Budapest, 07 June, 2007. – BAA and a consortium led by HOCHTIEF AirPort (HTA) yesterday formally closed and completed the transaction of the sale of BAA’s shares in Budapest Airport (BA) to the HOCHTIEF AirPort Consortium. With this move, the consortium acquires all the shares previously held by BAA and takes over majority control of and operational responsibility for Budapest Airport.

The HOCHTIEF AirPort Consortium appointed Dr. Reinhard Kalenda, CEO of HOCHTIEF AirPort, as CEO of Budapest Airport and Dimitrios Gatsonis, Director Aviation at HTA, as Deputy CEO of BA.

“We are very proud", Dr. Reinhard Kalenda said, "of acquiring Hungary’s unique national asset. We have long sought to acquire a stake in this airport because there is great potential and the airport perfectly fits into our airport portfolio. The HTA consortium has long-term commitment to develop Ferihegy. By bringing in our know-how and the HTA network of airports, we will turn vision into value and realize Budapest Airport's potential.”

The new management will now focus on the further development, expansion and modernization of the airport. It will invest extensively into Ferihegy, spending a total amount of EUR 261 million in the next five years alone.

Budapest Airport will strengthen its leading position in Central and Eastern Europe and, within ten years, become one of the most successful airports in Europe in terms of passenger growth, service quality and efficiency. The aviation hub will be a key driver of economic growth both for Budapest and for Hungary as a whole.

A budapesti repülőtér új tulajdonosa 261 millió euróért Közép-Európa legsikeresebb légikikötőjévé fejlesztené Ferihegyet.

Reinhardt Kalenda, a reptér új vezérigazgatója.

Ezek kialakításában a reptér új tulajdonosa, a HochTief Airport GmbH aktívan részt kíván venni – hangsúlyozta Kalenda, aki nemcsak a Ferihegyi reptér, hanem a tuajdonos cég vezérigazgatói tisztét is ellátja.

A cégen belül is átszervezésekre készülnek, leggyorsabban a minibusz-szolgáltatást szeretnék kiszervezni.

Several milestones marked the month of May 2007:

SkyEurope launched Internet Check-In

This new, free of charge service gives passengers the option to check-in from the comfort of their own living room, as early as 48 hours before departure, thus saving them the time that would be normally spent in airport queues. The internet check-in is closed four hours before each scheduled departure. The service is currently only available at selected airports.

First SkyEurope Next Generation aircraft in Hungary

In May the first brand new Boeing 737-700 NG aircraft was delivered to SkyEurope in Hungary. The youngest Hungarian aircraft registered by SkyEurope Airlines Hungary Kft., “HA-LKM”, is already in service since 20 May 2007, serving a network of 19 destinations out of Budapest Ferihegy Airport.

Sármellékre indít járatot a Germanwings

2007. július 6-án tovább bővül a Sármellékre közlekedő Germanwings járatok száma, hiszen augusztus 31-ig Berlinből is közlekedtet majd járatokat a Légitársaság a Balatonhoz.
Érdemes nyáron ellátogatni a varázslatos Berlinbe, hiszen nincs más évszak, amikor a német főváros ilyen színes és sokoldalú képet festene magáról. Németország legnagyobb városa, Berlin egy rendkívül dinamikus város, ahol mindenki megtalálja az érdeklődési körének leginkább megfelelő program-lehetőségeket, legyen akár a szórakozás, a pihenés és feltöltődés, a kultúra, a tudományos élet az utazás célja.
A Germanwings erős növekedési potenciált lát a sármelléki térségben:
"A Ferihegyre közlekedő járataink sikerére alapozva döntöttünk az új járat beindítása mellett, hiszen ezek 85 százalékot meghaladó helykihasználtsággal üzemelnek. A közeljövőben nagyon erős növekedési potenciált látunk a balatoni térségben, amit igazolni látszik, hogy a Kölnből Sármellékre érkezett járat helykihasználtsága már az első napon is meghaladta a 90 százalékot." - mondta Andrea Engel, a Germanwings kommunikációs igazgatója.

Since the number of passengers flying to and from Bratislava has increased drastically over the past few years, "Slovakia's strategic company a.k.a. Golden Egg" Bratislava Airport has decided to invest into further capacities. Last year the brand new terminal C was built, rumours say the architect had been supposedly inspired by a sardine can while designing the building. This year a brand new tent was built to satisfy increasing demand. Further investments will be made next year, including cleaning of the toilets and a second much larger tent.

Our government rejected privatisation of Bratislava Airport. Consortium of Vienna Airport, Raiffeisen Zentralbank and Slovak investment group Penta wanted to buy Bratislava and Košice airports however finnaly for some formal mistake the get only Košice Airport. Many people including me was against this sale because the distance between Schwechat and M.R. Štefánik airport is only 40 km so there were apprehensions that Vienna Airport wants to overtake Bratislava Airport to become a monopol. And possibily in the future move all flights to Schwechat but, I don't think so.

Dzurinda's government was for sale but after the elections Fico (who was all the time strictly against, maybe because Penta gruop is closer to Dzurinad's SDKÚ party than to Fico's SMER) for mentioned formal mistake refused this privatisation. He promissed big investitions to the airport but we can't see any activity in this. We even don't know where this government wants to get money for the invstitions. From national budget it can't be supported because of Euro adoption criteria. The Airport which is now booming should very quickly get some money and start building of new and modernisation of old terminal. Present capacity is not enough that's why is there the tent.

June 19th, 2007, 08:08 PM
No no no,the situation is different. The agreement was like this. If the winner fails to meet all requirements, the deal either falls automatically to the second contender, or the whole privatisation is cancelled. The main problem is there was a chance for Abertis with J&T to get the airport after Vienna Airport didnt meet the requirements. However the Fico goverment decided not to privatise, this way making themselves more popular. The problem is however, Fico wants both Vienna and Bratislava airports to sign a pact of cooperation, this way creating a monopoly anyway. Selling the airport to Vienna would have been better, because they would have been obliged to invest into the airport, and also we would also get money from the sale. So the end result is no money, and a monopoly anyway. If our government cared, they would have used the chance to sell to Abertis, but as we all know, they do not care.

for non-czech speaking - 2 new international airports are proposed in czech republic. Pardubice and Vodochody.

PRAHA - Že by Vodochody a Pardubice mohly v budoucnu konkurovat Ruzyni, není ministerstvu dopravy proti mysli.

Právu to včera potvrdila mluvčí Penty Jana Studničková.

Později tu chce vybudovat i centrum nákladní letecké dopravy. Do projektu chce investovat pět miliard korun.

Airport Bratislava gets financial injection 6 bln SKK in next 4-5 years (over 170 mil EUR). New terminal will be built. Parking places will be extended. Part of investments should be paid by private companies which want to run a business at the airport.

Praha, 28. 6. 2007 (iHNed.cz (http://ihned.cz))

Moravskoslezský kraj chce v příštích letech nastartovat mohutný rozvoj letecké dopravy z letiště v Mošnově nedaleko Ostravy. Mělo by z něj začít létat 12 nových mezinárodních linek, jejich provozovatele radní vyberou v rámci veřejného nabídkového řízení z dopravců Evropského společenství. V příštím roce se počítá se zahájením letů do Bruselu, Londýna, Moskvy a Amsterodamu, dalších osm linek by mělo začít létat do roku 2010. Kraj chce start nových linek podpořit v příštích pěti letech dotacemi v celkové hodnotě 709 milionů korun.

Košice Airport will launch the following new flights to/from European destinations with Boeing 737-700 aircraft as of 30 October 2007: 3 weekly flights to London, 3 weekly flights to Dublin, 7 weekly flights to Prague and 22 weekly flights to Bratislava. The additional flights are expected to increase the number of passengers handled at Košice Airport by 250,000 per year.

These new routes are the result of an agreement with SkyEurope, which was concluded with the support of the Chairman of VUC Košice (Košice region) Zdenko Trebula and Mayor of Košice František Knapík. The new flights will give the entire region of Eastern Slovakia greater access to air travel. Michael Höferer, CEO of Košice Airport s.a., commented, “Sky Europe, which is based at Bratislava and Vienna Airports, started operations from Vienna to 16 European destinations in March of this year and has recorded excellent growth. We are pleased to also welcome their additional flights to Košice.” Vienna Airport plc is part of a consortium that owns 66% of Košice Airport s.a. All types of travelers – commuters, tourists and visitors traveling to Prague, Bratislava, London and Dublin – will benefit from this new offering. In addition, the direct flights will give the Slovakian communities in these cities new opportunities to visit relatives in Eastern Slovakia more frequently. VUC and the city of Košice will support this project by increasing the number of regular bus lines between the airport and the city, whereby the bus schedule will be adjusted to meet the proposed flight plan.

In June 2007 the Košice Airport handled 44 315 passengers, i.e. 23% more than in June of the last year (35 889 passengers). The rise in numbers is apparent especially on domestic flights, where almost 46% growth was recorded – and of course in summer charter flights. A total of 28 226 passengers were handled on international flights – of that 13 882 passengers on regular lines between Košice and Prague and between Košice and Vienna. Domestic flights were used by 16 085 passengers. In June 2007 a total of 15 712 were handled on regular flights between Košice and Bratislava. In June the landed tonnes index grew by 10% compared to June 2006 to 14,196 tonnes, in total the Košice Airport handled 981 flights. 21,6 tonnes of cargo was transported over the subject period. The number of handled passengers in I-VI/2007 grew by 24% compared to the same period of the previous years – to 169,682 handled passengers. On international flights we have handled 86,958 passengers. 82,724 passengers flew on domestic flights. Regular flights to/from Bratislava, Prague and Vienna were used by 150,437 passengers. Irregular and other flights accounted for a total of 19,245 passengers. In the first half of the year the Košice Airport handled 62,235 landed tonnes. The number of aircraft movements grew to 4999. Over 128 tonnes of cargo were handled over the first 6 months. SkyEurope Airlines operates regular flights from Košice to Bratislava, Czech Airlines fly to Prague and Austrian Airlines Group operate the regular flights to Vienna. With respect to the proportion of individual carriers on total passenger figures in June 2007, SkyEurope Airlines is at the first place – using exclusively their Boeing 737´s, followed by Czech Airlines and Austrian Airlines. There were 63 charters flights to 14 destinations in June, mostly to Hurghada, Antalya and Monastir. “ This positive development confirms the strategic course that was set in recent months," commented Michael Höferer, CEO of Košice Airport, on the above-average growth rates. "Together with the region, we plan to continue this focus in the future."

Q1 - 1.782.338,00 (+15,6%)
Q2 - 2.414.327,00 (+12,3%)

Source: www.ulc.gov.pl

Okęcie airport (WAW) versus regional Polish airports are now about 50%/50% in terms of traffic.

Estimating that the growth rate in Q3 and Q4 wil be similiar, the airport will serve about 9,2 mln pax.

Again, Polish governmental civil aviation bureau does not include general aviation and transit in the statistics, so they are rather uncomparable with other countries. :(

Prague, 27 July 2007

Prague Airport broke new records in operation indicators for the first half of 2007. The number of travellers dispatched in comparison with the same period as last year increased by 9% to 5 580 685. In terms of its dynamic performance, Prague Airport has exceeded the European average in passenger transport growth, which fluctuates at around 5%.

“The most significant year-on-year growth in operations has been registered in the first three months of the years. The second quarter confirmed this positive trend and exceeded last year’s results,” summarises Jiří Pos, Executive Director of Air Transport Sales and Operations at Prague Airport, adding “In terms of the number of check-in passengers, regular and irregular transport developed at the same rate. The share of low-cost airlines in total operations increased to 23%, with low-cost airlines transporting 29% more passengers in the first half of the year compared to last year.“ The number of travellers using connections of network carries also increased by 3%. Czech Airlines’ share in the number of checked-in passengers was 43%.

Evidence of the growing preference for Prague Airport among travellers using it as a transit point is the 6% year-on-year growth in transferring passengers. This trend is helped by the fact that Prague Airport and CSA cooperate with airlines part of the SkyTeam alliance in building a hub system.

The greatest number of travellers in the first have of 2007 used the connections to Great Britain, Germany, and Italy. The trinity of most-popular destinations is London, Paris, and Frankfurt. Thanks to the new regular connections, there was an increase in the number of travellers from Prague to Switzerland (+52%), Italy (+37%) and Spain (+31%). The destinations that saw the biggest growth are Milan (+40 %), the holiday destination Hurghada (+30 %), Rome (+25 %), Brussels (+17 %)m and Moscow (+ 13 %).

Direct link between Belfast and Budapest

Budapest, 15 August, 2007– The choice of destinations offered by Ferihegy Airport will be complemented with a new destination next year after Irish airline Aer Lingus announced that it will establish an aerial link between Belfast and Budapest as of 25 February 2008, the opening of its new base at the Northern Irish capital.

So far, the city of nearly 600,000 inhabitants had only been accessible from Budapest with a transfer in London, Paris, Amsterdam or Prague. From February next year, the Airbus-320s of the Irish carrier will commute between Belfast and the Hungarian capital three times a week.

Aer Lingus is not new to Ferihegy, it currently operates flights between Dublin and Budapest. The new Belfast route will enhance Budapest Airport’s links with the United Kingdom. Today, five airlines (British Airways, Malév, Easyjet, Jet2, Wizz Air) offer flights to two cities in the UK (London and Manchester).

This number is set to grow with the arrival of Ryanair in October. The Irish low cost airline will start to operate flights to Liverpool, East Midlands Airport, Glasgow and Bristol this autumn.

“We are delighted with Aer Lingus’s announcement.” – said Budapest Airport CEO Dr. Reinhard Kalenda.

“The flight will enable us to bring more tourists to Hungary and to strengthen business and cultural ties between the two cities. We will continue our work to attract more airlines to Ferihegy, so that they link Budapest with more and more cities and improve Hungary’s connection to Europe and the world.”

In other news: China Aviation Authority released information about new destination of Chinese airlines. They say that Air China will open Beijing-Warsaw in OCT2008.

It's ugly and it blindly follows the trends of all the new low cost airlines, which is not good for a traditional airline like CSA. I admired it for keeping the beautiful old design with that vintage-looking font and everything. Well, too bad.

In the last picture showing the design evolution, the one saying "the 90's" it obviously shows a governmental plane, not CSA...Idiots.

SkyEurope Airlines transported a total of 401,238 passengers in August 2007, an increase of 14.5% compared to the same month of last year. SkyEurope further improved the load factor recording an increase of 4.3 percentage points, reaching 90.8%. This increase was accomplished despite fewer aircraft in the fleet in August 2007 versus August 2006 by better utilising the new larger 737-700NG aircraft.

In the 12 months ended August 2007, the Company carried 3,256,875 passengers, an increase of 32.2% compared to the same period of last year. The load factor in the past 12 months increased by 6.8 percentage points and reached 82.3%.

Several milestones marked the month of August 2007:

Youngest fleet in Europe

On 17 August 2007 SkyEurope accepted the delivery of the 14th brand new Boeing 737-700NG and completed the renewal process of the fleet. Operating exclusively 737 Next Generation aircraft with an average age of 8 months, SkyEurope now has the youngest commercial fleet in Europe. Further aircraft deliveries will continue to decrease the average age of the fleet. Having the youngest fleet also means that we also have one of the most fuel efficient and environmentally friendly fleets in the Europe.

In Prague, Iberia unveils new direct Flights between Czech Republic and Spain
New route with five direct return flights per week to be launched on October 29.
Madrid, 21 of September of 2007
http://www.lomejor.com/19/3/42/64/69/IberiaT404.jpg
At the Business and Trade Office at the Spanish Emabassy in Prague, Iberia's International Sales Chief Silvia Cairo told the press about the Spanish airline's new direct links between Prague and Madrid .

Iberia, Spain’s largest airline, Europe’s fourth-largest scheduled carrier, and the undisputed market leader on routes between Europe and Latin America, will link the Czech and Spanish capital cities with five direct flights per week, starting October 29.

The new service will also provide Czech passengers with connections in Madrid to Iberia’s extensive network of destinations, including 35 cities in Spain (Malaga, Valencia, Barcelona, Bilbao, Palma de Majorca, etc.); major cities in the Mediterranean basin; South Africa; and the largest range of Latin American destinations offered by any airline: 17 cities, with daily flights to almost all of them, and twice-daily to some, totalling 250 flights per week.

Iberia expects the Prague-Madrid route to yield average seat occupancy of 77% in the first year. As demand increases in the summer, the airline will add more seats by using larger aircraft on the route.

A Szuhoj Superjet regionális közlekedésre kifejlesztett, a 75-95 személyes kategóriába tartozó gép. Ára 28-30 millió dollár. Szakmai honlapokon közölt információk szerint a gépre eddig 7 légitársaság összesen 98 megrendelést és 75 opciót adott le. A szállításokat legkorábban 2008 második felében tudja megkezdeni a Szuhoj.

Yesterday, the owner of Malév "Hungarian" Airlines, MR. Boris Abramovic announced that Malév is considering of buying 15 russian Sukhoi Superjets (75-95 seats) for regional routes.

According to russian sources contracts will be signed in the first quarter of 2008, and the first plains will arrive end of the same year.

Damn. To be frank, I'm extremely suspicious about this deal. Who the hell empowered this Abramovic guy to buy Eastern technology for an EU airline? There must exist a committee of several members at Malev that makes decisions in things like this. It's not up to him to decide it, bringing Russian aircrafts to Hungary manufactured by his bloody business fellows! :nono:
This crazy Russian bastard may destroy the good reputation of Malev by Sukhois. I don't say Russian technology is not up-to-date but it's not even reliable! Damn, I don't want to see pictures of Malev air-crashes on CNN every other day. Three or four Mig-29 crash were enough in Hungarian AirForce in the past 15 years.
If they want to expand the fleet, then buy Boeings or Airbuses but not that crap! Western planes are surely more expensive but reliability matters! Allright I'm a bit anti-russain... :)

You are not a bit anti-russian, you are a lot anti-russian.;) In Wikipedia is mentioned that also Air France, Lufthansa, SAS and Iberia are possible customers. BTW, Abramovich must buy Russian aircrafts if he don't want to end up as Chodorkovskij. You know, Mr. Putin like when people are buying things "Сделано в России.":)

Mr. Abramovic, can do what ever he wants with Malév... :ohno: I'm not the one who sold it... The former (Megyó) administration fired Mr. József Várady, CEO and founder of Wizzair... This is the outcome... We should thank the red administration for this as well.

About Sukhoi Superjets... Personally I dont think they are so bad... Boeing, Alenia, etc all connected to the project...

I thing both are friends of Kremlin. All Russian oligarchs have two opportunities: To be friend of the Kremlin or not to be (alive).;)

I also don't thing that aircrafts are more dangerous than Western ones. However, I don't understand why Malév buys so small planes. In which destination they should be used? It has from 60 to 95 seats what is in my opinion not enough even for some regional flights.

So that's interresting. Maybe Malév will use them as private jets for managers. That's what I call luxury.;) I simpy don't understand. I can imagine this size planes in operation for some regional flights between smaller cities or as private jets but not for international flights. Guys from Hungary, please post all information ASAP, because I'm going to be really curious.

I think that in this particular case, when Abramovic thinks he is the God in heaven, the decisions are not made for the sake of common sense but for the sake of the Russian business lobby.

You know, aircraft cost quite a lot of money and I doubt Mr. Abramovich is so stupid that he would buy useless planes only beacuse of some lobby. He certainly must have some buisness plan. If he wanted he could buy some larger Russian planes for regular flights.

There is no point in any domestic flight(apart from one end of the country to the other, but I suspect there wont be any big market for that),because you can reach even Vienna and Bratislava in like 2:30 hours. The route with a plane would be the same time, but with higher costs.

Press Info on the RRJ or Sukhoi Superjet:

Sukhoi Superjet 100 was officially unveiled to the international aerospace community at the roll out ceremony. The Sukhoi Superjet 100 is a regional jet family in the 75 to 95-seat category. The Superjet 100 was formerly referred to as the Russian Regional Jet (Самолёт Российский Региональный Сухого), or “Sukhoi RRJ.” The name was changed on 17 July 2006.

The Sukhoi Superjet 100 is the first aircraft designed and produced in the new Russia. Today’s ceremony would not have happened without the support of all three states participating in the project – Russia, France and Italy. The rollout was attended by representatives of the ministries and state authorities of these countries. Mikhail Pogosyan, Sukhoi Company’s CEO, said: “Sukhoi Superjet 100 is a child of thousands of people around the globe, committed to the project success with their hearts and souls. It took us all six and a half years to get here, overcoming skepticism and finding our way in translation of international rules of play to Russian aerospace industry and incorporating world industry standards in it. Have a look at the aircraft – I’m sure, it was worth it.” The revealed aircraft airframe is ready for the flight tests – the fuselage had been joined, as well as the wings, control surfaces, and the attached engines. The aircraft is equipped with the major systems, for instance, auxiliary power unit and landing gear. Avionics blocks installation is under completion and pilot cockpit holds all panels, indicators, side-sticks, thrust levers and pedals.

Speaking about the program status, Victor Soubbotin, Sukhoi Civil Aircraft Company’s President, said: “It’s a special day for us. A day when we can once again say – it’s just a beginning. We are on the way towards flight tests, entry into service in the fleet of our launch customer and a long life for the aircraft in the sky.” In the coming two months the aircraft is due to be ready for flight tests. For instance the static tests, being performed in TsAGI (Zhukovsky) should be completed. The same relates to system tests at suppliers’ test benches and their integration tests at Electronic Bird at SCAC. After that Sukhoi Superjet 100 will take off for its first flight. Today would be nothing special without the Program partners and suppliers. Strategic partner Alenia Aeronautica, a Fimeccanica company, who will soon become a SCAC shareholder (25%+1 share) and who with Sukhoi Company had already established the Superjet International joint venture for sales at mature markets and worldwide aftersales support. Boeing, who was a consultant to the project from its very launch. Risk-sharing partner Snecma, who together with Russian NPO Saturn (through their joint venture PowerJet) is responsible for the SaM146 engine.

Project suppliers contributed beyond estimation to the aircraft and developing Sukhoi Civil Aircraft Company competences:
Avionics: THALES; Flight control system: LIEBHERR (with Russian partner – Teploobmennik); Environmental control system: LIEBHERR; Landing gear: MESSIER DOWTY; Fuel system: INTERTECHNIQUE (ZODIAC); Interior: B/E AEROSPACE; Fire protection system: AUTRONICS (CURTISS WRIGHT); Oxygen system: B/E AEROSPACE; Auxiliary power unit: HONEYWELL; Crew seats: IPECO; Hydraulic system: PARKER; Electrical system: HAMILTON SUNDSTRAND; Engine vibration sensors: VIBRO-METER; Wheels, brakes: GOODRICH

Major subcontractors include Boeing Commercial Airplanes, Ilyushin, Yakovlev, and PowerJet. Boeing provides consulting in such areas as project management, market planning, certification and customer support. Snecma is providing some level of funding for the project. Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. is negotiating a participatory role.

The aircraft will be equipped with two PowerJet SaM146 turbofans.

The Superjet 100 is intended to compete against the Antonov An-148, Embraer E-Jets and the Bombardier CSeries programs. Sukhoi’s director general Mikhail Pogosyan claims the SSJ will have 10-15% lower operation costs than its Embraer or Bombardier counterparts and its wider cabin will offer more comfort; at the catalogue price of $27.8 mln, it should also be cheaper by 18-22%. On the other hand, both Embraer and Bombardier offer much more comprehensive after-sales and maintenance network.

Sukhoi Civil Aircraft Company (SCAC) is a Sukhoi Company subsidiary. Founded in 2000, SCAC primarily aims to produce new models of civil aircraft. The Company’s pilot project is production of Sukhoi Superjet 100, a new family of Russian regional aircraft. SCAC is focused upon the following scope of activity: design and development, marketing and sales, production, certification of the aircraft. Worldwide aftersales support and sales at mature markets is handled by Superjet International, a joint venture founded by Sukhoi Company and Alenia Aeronautica. SCAC has several branches at the production sites located in Komsomolsk-on-Amur and Novosibirsk altogether employing 1,500+ people. Sukhoi Superjet 100 firm order portfolio totals 73 aircraft. Deliveries are to begin in 2008.

If sources are correct Sukhoi is negotiating with International Aero Engine Group to install the V-2500 (Same as Wizzair is using on it's Airbus A320s)engines.

^^ These planes may replace Malév's Fokker 70s. Those have 72 seats, so around this size. These Fokkers are used for example on the Budapest-Moscow route. Anyway I'm not against Russian planes, when you come to think of it, the whole eastern block flew on Tupolevs and Ilyushins :)

Has anyone got info why the hell Malév is not flying to Beograd?

It has a reason but a bit difficult... As far as I know, the last Malév flight to Belgrade was in 1991. During the war and UN embargo, JAT was banned, so the passengers of Belgrade and Serbia mostly used Malév flights from Budapest. I remember in the mid-90's, the road 5 was always full of Serbian (Yugoslav) coaches and vans, most of them with a text "airport transfer Beograd-Budapest", carrying passengers to Ferihegy and back. The Malév office in Belgrade (which still exists, though there are no flights) was the busiest. JAT and Yugoslavia wanted some money from Malév for their extra income from their Serbian passengers but Malév refused to do so, so now they are (still) not allowed to fly to Belgrade.

This is a version I heared, maybe not so exact, if someone know something more, just post it :)

Wizz Air, the largest low fare-low cost airline based in Central and Eastern Europe announced today that it had signed a contract with Airbus for an additional order of 50 firm A320 aircraft and 25 options increasing its total orders up to 107 aircraft. The new order follows Wizz Air's existing A320 order, addresses its capacity requirements until 2014 and is the largest Airbus fleet order recorded in the CEE region. The firm aircraft deliveries will position Wizz Air to become one of the preeminent airlines in the region over the next decade.
In line with Wizz Air’s existing fleet, the new A320 aircraft come with enhanced cabin features and single-class configuration seating 180 passengers in comfortable leather seats.
The delivery stream of existing and new orders will result in the Wizz Air fleet having an average age of less than 3 years for the next 10 years promoting high operational efficiency and technical reliability, increased passenger comfort, environmental efficiency and one the lowest seat mile cost in the region.
"Wizz Air has demonstrated its ability for sustainable growth in a competitive environment, where low cost leadership is fundamental to market share growth and to remaining competitive. The A320 is a proven contributor to our low cost base and continues to deliver low seat mile costs, high operational reliability and customer satisfaction using an environmentally friendly platform. The new aircraft order will put Wizz Air in the league of the largest fleet operators in the region. By 2016 Wizz Air would operate a fleet of over 100 A320 aircraft." said József Váradi, Chief Executive Officer of Wizz Air.
"We are very proud to take part in the tremendous growth of Wizz Air in the Central and Eastern Europe region" said Airbus Chief Operating Officer Customers, John Leahy. "The new order strongly underpins Wizz Air's aspirations to expand. The A320 Family is clearly the leading aircraft in its category, and this milestone order really endorses the superiority of our product" he added.

Ryanair méretű fapadossá dagadna a Wizz Air

- A nagy kérdés, honnan lesz ennyi utas?

- Mely államok jöhetnek szóba a további terjeszkedést illetően?

Ön miben látja a bajok eredőjét?

- Hozott-e változást ezen a téren a BA júniusban beiktatott új vezetése?

- Szkeptikus vagyok a Malévval kapcsolatban.

- Mint mondtam, erről most nincsenek híreink. Ha lesznek, jelezni fogjuk.

Wéber Balázs

A Ryanair nyomában

(Ezen a szakaszon eddig a SkyEurope repült.)

Final decision on an investment project at Bratislava airport that is currently being prepared by the Government has to be made by the end of the year, Prime Minister Robert Fico told journalists during the opening of the new A6 motorway between Bratislava and Vienna on Monday.
The most probable partner for the development project of M.R. Stefanik airport is Vienna's Schwechat airport. "The idea of Bratislava and Vienna airports' joint activities is good as the state won't lose control over the airport, we'll have a reliable partner, and the airport will develop in its own way," said Fico.
At the moment, the Government is waiting for the decision of European authorities whether the possible cooperation will or will not represent a concentration of the air-traffic market in the region. "If due to legal reasons such cooperation won't be possible, we'll have to seek a different solutions," Fico conceded.

Aiport Vienna will probably get Airport Bratislava without privatisation. Long-terms contracts should be a guarentee of high investments. Two alternatives are possible:
- Agreement that Schwechat will operate on BTS for 20 years
- Establishing joint-venture
VIE still wants to invest more than 200 mil. eur.

Just short update about Warsaw airport. Terminal 2 will finally be opened by the end of March '08, the former contractor Ferrioval-Budimex was kicked out (as the building did not meet fire protection standards and handed-over to the airport authorities will be subject to finishing remaining works to other contractor). However, this mess does not seem to slower the airport route developement. Some new routes announced in the remaining quater are as follows:
Iceland Express 2-3 weelky to Reijkiavik
Iberia 5-7 weekly to Madrid
TACV (Cabo Verde airlines) 1 weekly to Sal
Dnieproavia 3 weekly to Dniepropietrovsk
British Airways CityFlyer 7 weekly to London City (and switching its Heathrow flights from Warsaw to Gatwick, so the only WAW-LHR connection is with LOT, 3 daily)
LOT 5-7 weekly to Beijing
Air China 5 weekly to Beijing
bmi - Cardiff and East Midlands
Niki - 2 daily to Vienna
Swiss - Geneva

The charter flights are growing every year, Eurocypria based one aircraft, Air Italy Polska is awaiting its 3 Boeing 757s for long-haul destinations. Further long-haul flights are expected with new LOT Boeing 787, with Far East and new North America destinations mentioned as possible. Naturally there are many gosspis about new carriers (e.g. Vietnam Airlines to Hanoi-Noibai) but will be sure when confirmed :)

Nový terminál bratislavského letiska bude stáť takmer 10 miliárd

Vláda SR by mohla v druhej polovici januára 2008 rozhodnúť o konečnom spôsobe zabezpečenia finančných zdrojov na výstavbu nového terminálu na bratislavskom letisku. Podľa materiálu ministerstva dopravy prvá etapa výstavby terminálu by mala byť odovzdaná do užívania v roku 2012, pričom dostavba terminálu má byť ukončená v roku 2010 a následná rekonštrukcia by mala trvať ďalšie dva roky. Odhadované náklady na stavbu pozemných objektov a komunikácií dosahujú spolu vyše 7,070 mld. Sk, na zabezpečenie letiskových technológií 2,256 mld. Sk a na inžiniersko-projektovú činnosť zvyšných 180,3 mil. Sk.

Summary in English:
New terminal of BTS airport should be finished by 2012 with estimated costs 10 bln. SKK (over 330 mil. EUR). Slovak goverment still have to decide which way of financing will be used. That should be known by the half of January 2008.

some fresh aviation news from Hungary:

Meanwhile, Russia's Sukhoi Civil Aircraft, a subsidiary of Sukhoi aircraft manufacturing holding, and Hungarian national air carrier Malev Airlines signed on Friday an agreement to build a servicing and repair center for SuperJet 100 in Hungary.

According to Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, who holds a large stake in Malev Airlines, the company may purchase up to 15 of the new aircraft next year.

"I believe Malev will order up to 15 new 95-seat SuperJet-100 planes. The decision could be made in the first half of 2008," he said in September.

And again about Malev

EC questions Malev's Russian ties
Monday December 10, 2007

The European Commission has contacted Hungarian authorities regarding the control and ownership of Malev Hungarian Airlines, the EC Directorate-General for Energy and Transport confirmed to ATWOnline.

The Commission is seeking reassurance that Malev still fulfills all conditions required to be an EU carrier. Doubts regarding its status follow its privatization last spring. The Hungarian government sold a 99.95% stake in the airline to AirBridge, a Hungarian company affiliated with Russian carrier KrasAir (ATWOnline, June 8).

According to the press release issued by the legal firm that advised on the Malev sale, "AirBridge is a holding company member of the Russian AiRUnion-Krasair Group which is considered to be the second largest Russian airline alliance after Aeroflot." AiRUnion combines KrasAir, Domodedovo Airlines, Omskavia, Samara Airlines and Sibaviatrans (ATWOnline, May 4). The Hungarian press commonly describes Malev as a Russian-controlled or Russian-owned carrier.

"The legislation is very clear. If a carrier is owned more than 49% by non-EU interests and is effectively controlled by non-EU interests, it is no longer a community carrier and it cannot benefit from the single European market," said Gilles Gantelet, deputy head of Unit F1 responsible for internal market, air transport agreements and multilateral relations.

He acknowledged that certain companies are established specifically to conform to EU rules, but he would not conclude this is the case with Malev. "We are in touch with the Hungarian authorities on this issue," he said, noting it is the responsibility of national authorities to guarantee application of the law and make sure carriers it licenses are EU-owned and controlled. "Should the European Commission have doubts, we can make an inquiry and we can start an infringement procedure in the European Court of Justice against the respective government for failing to apply EU regulation."

Separately and somewhat ironically, Malev Friday announced a five-year cooperation agreement with AiRUnion, Sukhoi and Russia's Bank for Development and Foreign Economic Activities. The deal calls for "a considerable increase in the number of [Malev's] Russian routes besides retaining its existing direct Russian services" through both the addition of new services and codeshares with partner carriers.

The airline added, "In the medium term, it is essential for Malev to upgrade its regional fleet, exchanging its current CRJs and Fokkers with new, modern jets." It said it is "examining" acquisition of Sukhoi's Superjet 100.

Pravidelné letecké spojenie z a do Bratislavy prevádzkuje výhradne letecká spoločnosť SkyEurope Airlines. Letecké spojenie medzi Košicami a Prahou zabezpečujú predovšetkým České Aerolínie a jednou dennou linkou SkyEurope Airlines. Do a z Viedne lieta Austrian Airlines Group.

Shortly in english.
In November, there were almost 42 000 pax, passing trough the gates of Kosice Barca Airport. This number represents 88% growth over same month last year.
Growth is evident particularly on connection from, and to bts, by launched additional frequency. This conection achieved almost 2/3 growth.
Total growth of passengers during last 11 month represents 26% over same period of the last year, mostly thanks to new attractive conections to London Luton and Dublin Int.
Sky Europe has also introduced its new conection to preague, which may compete to same conection operated by CSA 4 times per day.
In present time, there are CSA, Austrian airlines and SKY Europe airlines operating from Kosice Barca Airport to Prague, Wien, Bratislava, London Luton and Dublin Int.

Prague, 13 December 2007

Today, the twelve millionth passenger checked-in within one single year passed the gates at the Prague Airport for the first time in history. This record-high number of passengers reflects the overall trends of the expansion of air travels. At the end of November, the number of passengers who have travelled via the Prague Airport increased by 7.3per-cent as against the same period last year.

“This is almost exactly to the day when we checked in our eleven millionth passenger last year. And now we have managed to break yet another record – the twelve millionth passengers’ mark. We expect that their number will come close to 12.5 million by the end of the year”, Mr Stanislav Zeman, Prague Airport’s Marketing Director commented on the operating achievements.

Since the beginning of this year 34,760 people have passed through the airport daily on the average; the largest number of almost 47,000 passengers was recorded on 29 June 2007. The most popular destinations traditionally comprise Paris, with almost 530,000 travellers over the past 11 months, followed by Frankfurt/Main with 420,000 passengers, and London Heathrow, where almost 386,00 passengers travelled from Prague. Among the long-haul destinations, New York, USA, is the most popular, with 103,000 passengers, ahead of Seoul, South Korea (80,000) and Toronto, Canada, with more than 52,000 passengers.

People travel most often with the national carrier, ČSA. That airline carried more than 4.9 million passengers from January until the end of November this year, including almost 4.4 million people on its regular services. It is followed by Travel Service with almost 1.1 million passengers, including almost 891,000 peoples travelling to their holiday destinations. The third place traditionally belongs to the low-cost carrier easyJet with more than 900,000 passengers.

MALÉV, AIRUNION, SUKHOI AND VNYESEKONOM BANK SIGN FOUR-WAY COOPERATION AGREEMENT

http://img211.imageshack.us/img211/2126/malevit7.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Definitive players (on the Hungarian side Malév Hungarian Airlines, and on the Russian side AiRUnion, Sukhoi Company and the Bank for Development and Foreign Economic Activities of the Russian state.) in one of the key areas of Hungarian-Russian economic relations, aviation, have concluded a five-year cooperation agreement, the signing of which - considering the significance of the arrangement - took place in the framework of a Hungarian-Russian intergovernmental consultation on 7 December 2007, in the presence of the prime ministers of Hungary and Russia.

http://img211.imageshack.us/img211/5622/hiroroszmagyarbj7.gif (http://imageshack.us)

In addition to membership of the oneworld airline alliance, the guarantee of the Hungarian national carrier's stable and profitable operation, and its medium- and long-term market development, is an opening towards, and expansion into, the Russian market. The dynamically developing Russian market holds out the potential of continuous expansion and growth projected many years into the future. Malév intends to implement its ambitious plans with the cooperation of such key players on the Russian aviation market as AiRUnion, Russia's second largest airline, and Sukhoi Company.

Through cooperation arrangements with AiRUnion Malév plans a considerable increase in the number of its Russian routes besides retaining its existing direct Russian services. This will come about partly through the initiation of totally new direct flights, and partly in cooperation with Russian partner airlines. This means that Malév passengers will be able to access every major city in Russia from Budapest with a maximum one transfer.
Furthermore, there is considerable potential that can be exploited in cooperation between Malév Air Tours and Russian travel agencies belonging to the AiRUnion sphere of interest, which will likely result in a dramatic rise in the number of well-off incoming visitors to Hungary.

Sukhoi Company, designer and manufacturer of the new Sukhoi SuperJet 100 short- and medium-haul aircraft, has become an important factor on the international civil aviation market with its new model. Sukhoi's strategic partner, Italian Alenia Aeronautica, plans to buy a 25+1% stake in Sukhoi's affiliate company Sukhoi Civil Aircraft Manufacturing Company. In the summer of 2007 Sukhoi Company established a joint venture with its Italian partner, which will conduct the sales of the SSJ100 aircraft and after-sales service and maintenance worldwide. International corporations such as Boeing and Snecma took part in the realization of the Sukhoi Company programme; Boeing supplied professional consultancy services in the project while Snecma, working in close cooperation with Russian NPO Saturn, participated in the development and manufacture of the airline engines.

In the medium term it is essential for Malév to upgrade its regional fleet, exchanging its current CRJs and Fokkers with new, modern jets. Under the fleet modernization programme Malév is examining the possibilities of acquiring new SSJ100 Sukhoi jets, or business cooperation aimed at the technical provision of this type.

http://img120.imageshack.us/img120/9502/hiroroszmagyar2ry1.gif (http://imageshack.us)

Vnyesekonom Bank is primarily engaged in financing investment activities, including air transport industry developments in the 2007-2010 period. Accordingly, it is willing to examine the financing options of the projects listed in the signed agreement.

The four-way agreement that has been established between SUKHOI Company, the Bank for Development and Foreign Economic Activities of the Russian state, AiRUnion and Malév Hungarian Airlines serves as the foundation for the high volume but realistic plans, which have the objective of creating strategic cooperation and financing between the contracting parties.
The parties will regulate the implementation of concrete projects set up within the framework of the cooperation agreement through the conclusion of specific commercial contracts.

Finally some data regarding expansion for Warsaw Okecie airport has juest been oficially announced. There were plans to locate central airport about 50-80 km from Warsaw, but is seems that Okecie will remain the main one for the country, despite the rapid growth in regional airports last 2-3 years. The airport authorities plan to close one of two existing runways (which cross in the middle) and to build another long runway alongside the existing one. Below is a general picture of the future developements. The new runway will be very close to planned motorway which may cause some technical issues. Also, the third international terminal is planned between these two runways or on the eastern side (by the motorway). The investment will enable WAW to handle up to 25-28 mln pax per year. This year it is about 9,2 mln pax (transit and general aviation not included)
Ah, the terminal 2 will be finally open by march 2008, that's for sure. Some info from serious source :)

BTW, can a Czech aviation enthusiast tell me whether it is true that CSA is cutting it's Montreal/Toronto route? Is it true that it will only be a seasonal route? If so, why did they make a decision to do just that, I thought they were making $$ off that route.
Another one of my questions is where will they fly the A310? They have 4 of them I believe and one is leased to Air India. Where will the widebody aircraft fly....if there is only New York that is overseas?
It is a shame that Praha Ruzyne will no longer have direct connection with Toronto and Montreal.

^ Yes, I've heard about cutting this flight. There is problem with A310s, they can't carry cargo so they are unprofitable for these longhaul flights. CSA is going to use them only for charters, which are always full, there are rumours they will cut even New York and this route will be operated by Delta (Sky Team member). CSA needs to buy new longhaul fleet but this move is still only being considering.

There is a large slovak comunity in US and Canada, mostly from eastern slovakia. (about 700 k)
Most of them are using CSA on its routes from Kosice via Prague as substitution of non-existing slovak national carrier for years and years.
This temporary cut might means progressive leaving of customers to competition as Austrian or Malev. My opinion is, that Delta wont be able to substitue CSA in full rate.
Its pity. :ohno:

^ well, these flights were unprofitable so this move was logical, there is tight competion on transatlantic routes. AFAIK CSA is currently focusing on medium-long flights in Europe. Moreover, government wants to sell it so the main task of management is to return company in the black numbers.

Airlines has postponed their plans for Bratislava Airport. SkyEurope wanted to fly to Moscow and Istanbul since the half of January, but these flights are still missing in their schedule. SkyEurope is now negotiating about new contract with airport and if management does not change its mind, SkyEurope considers the end of growth in Bratislava and moving some of the apacities to Prague or Vienna.
The same negotiatos are also between airport and Ryanair which is still evaluating the possibilty of new destinations from BTS.

The rumors in Polish newspapers and in aviation industry are that the airline is pretty close to go bankrupt. Are the same in Slovakia?

I love this map. But I feel a bit scared. Yugoslavia unified again. That sounds cool. Did I miss something? I would be a bit furious if I were Albanian for instance.
Yea, and check out the shape of Bulgaria. LOL. MIlosevic occupied some Bulgarian fields...
And USSR is reunified again. I gotto clap my hands, EasyJET. Great work!
At least East and West Germany is updated without Berlin wall....

Oh my God. Israel doesn't EXIST in the New World Order od EasyJET. What the... This is outrageous. Occupied by Lebanon or Iraq???
Had I posted this map to the Middle-East forums, I would be dead by now. :)

:weird: This map is incredible! I'll never ever fly with EasyJET.

I was actually wondering how come there are no direct flights between Bratislava and Moscow at the moment. However, according to the Sheremetyevo Airport website, SkyEurope starts flying there from February 1st with 4 flights per week.

Shortly in English: There was 2.02 million pasangers on Bratislava airport last year what is by 4.5% more than in 2006. The growth of the number of passangers slowed significantly. Next week the governemnt should decide what will be the future of M.R. Štefánik airport. It urgently needs new terminal, because the capacity of the present one will be soon surpassed.

I have better solution. As Ubertino de Casale mentioned somewhere, Bratislava airport should be closed. Its lots should be sold and we should build new airport somewhere near Trnava. That would be IMO the best solution.

Mezinárodní letiště v Ralsku nejspíše nebude

Ralsko - Vybudování velkého letiště pro civilní dopravu v bývalém vojenském prostoru v Ralsku není reálné. „Denně by tu muselo přistávat minimálně šedesát letadel," upozornil náměstek hejtmana Libereckého kraje Petr Doležal.

Újabb járatot indít Sármellékről a Ryanair

http://www.mfor.hu/cikkek/Ujabb_jaratot_indit_Sarmellekrol_a_Ryanair.html

http://www.mfor.hu/cikkek/Ujabb_brit_varosba_repulhetunk_Ferihegyrol-.html

Saját járatokat indít Kolozsvárra a Malév

http://www.mfor.hu/cikkek/Sajat_jaratokat_indit_Kolozsvarra_a_Malev.html

A cég elsősorban üzleti- és átszálló utasokra számít ezen a vonalon, továbbá a turistaforgalom élénkülésével is számol.

Mint ismert, az utasok - a Carpatairrel 2005-ben kötött code-share együttműködésnek köszönhetően - már eddig is utazhattak Malév-repülőjeggyel Kolozsvárra, ezeket a járatokat azonban a romániai partner üzemelteti.

177 ezer utas tavaly

Románia a Malév egyik legfontosabb stratégiai piaca, ahová jelenleg négy célállomásra – Bukarest, Temesvár, Marosvásárhely és Kolozsvár - hetente 56 járatot indít a cég.

A Wizz duplázna Romániában

Romániába Ferihegyről a Maléven és a Carpatairen kívül a Tarom román nemzeti légitársaság, valamint a Wizz Air is közlekedtet járatokat. Utóbbi diszkont légitársaság 2007 novembere óta Marosvásárhely helyett Kolozsvárra repül Budapestről, a Budapest-Bukarest járatát viszont megszüntette.

Summary of the 3 articles(these 2 + in the post above):
A new route from Sármellék by Rynair to Düsseldorf. Then,Aer Lingus starts 3 flights weekly from Budapest to Belfast. And Malév starts daily 2 flight between Budapest and Cluj-Napoca.

Informáciu o plánovanom obnovení priameho leteckého spojenia ruskej a slovenskej metropoly agentúre SITA potvrdili v piatok v bratislavskej kancelárií Aeroflotu. Zatiaľ však nevedeli naisto povedať, kedy by mala byť dohoda podpísaná. Aeroflot chce na uvedenej linke používať lietadlo TU 154...

Shotly in English: Russian airlines Aeroflot will open new flights between Bratislava and Moscow on May 27th 2008. There will be two flights per week operated by TU 154.

So there will be probably two companies flying to Moscow. Second one will be lowcost airlines SkyEurope.

Több mint hatvanöt milliárd forintos befektetéssel a BA 2011-ig szinte teljesen megújítja a légikikötő arculatát. Új terminálépületek, karbantartó hangár és hajtóműpróbázó állás épül, létrejön egy új cargo város, kibővülnek a jelenlegi utascsarnokok és a forgalmi előtér is. A BUD Future program az elmúlt húsz év legjelentősebb repülőtér fejlesztési programja Ferihegyen.

Jost Lammers, a BA vezérigazgatója elmondta: Végre elkezdődött BUD Future bővítési és modernizációs programunk gyakorlati megvalósítása. Korábban sosem látott mértékű fejlesztést hajtunk végre a Ferihegyi repülőtéren, ennek első állomása a most megkezdett konténerváros megépítése. Ennek nyomán, 2011-re a Budapest Airport Közép-Kelet-Európa legsikeresebb repülőterévé válhat.

* a 2A és 2B terminál közötti üzemi épületeket teljes egészében elbontják;
* az így létrejövő építési területet alápincézik és a már meglévő pincerészekkel összekötik;
* a 2A és 2B terminál közé - azokat összekapcsoló - új, 70 m fesztávolságú csarnoképületet emelnek;
* a 2A és 2B terminál megmaradó épületrészeit légoldalon mintegy 13 m szélességben forgalmi előtérrel bővítik;
* a főépületre merőlegesen a légoldalon két, egyenként 190 m hosszú többszintes mólót létesítenek és
* a 2A terminál galériaszintjét üzemeltetési terekkel bővítik.

Summery in English:

The BUD Future expansion program began. The development, which consists of the construction of new terminal buildings, repairman hanger, cargo city, passenger halls and traffic forefront will last for three years. After the 65 billion forint modernization program Budapest Airport by 2011 could become the most successful airport in Central Europe.

Nový letiskový terminál? O štyri roky

Bratislavské letisko chce začať so stavbou nového terminálu za 2,9 miliardy korún v decembri tohto roka. Povedal to riaditeľ letiskovej spoločnosti Karol Biermann. Projekt terminálu by mal byť dokončený v roku 2012 tak, aby letisko zvládlo ročne vybaviť asi päť miliónov pasažierov.

"Potrebujeme bezpodmienečne čo najrýchlejšie rozšíriť terminál, pretože tam máme najväčší problém," vyhlásil Biermann. Celkovo by do rozvoja areálu letiska mali do konca roka 2012 smerovať investície za takmer päť miliárd korún, dodal...

Shortly in English: Bratislava airport will get new terminal for EUR 90.5 million. EUR 62.5 million will be from government budget and the rest should be borrowed by the airport. Construction of the terminal should start in December 2008 and finish in year 2010 and capacity will increase on 3.5 million passengers a year. Then the old 30 years old terminal should be demolished and new one would be built there. Overall amount of investments will be EUR 156 million. In 2012 when the terminal on place of the old one will be finished the airport will be able to handle 5 million passengers a year. Present capacity is 2.6 million, last year there was 2.02 million passengers.

The article is a bit messy, I hope I understand it correctly.:)

I dont know whether you guys will get mad or not if I post this here, but Warsaw opened its new terminal 2. Since Poland is in Central Europe, I thought I would mention it here even though most Polish threads are in the Eastern European forum.

Warsaw airport is fit to handle 12 million passengers now.

Article from index.hu:

Tavaly a Ferihegyi repülőtér 2-es terminál utasforgalmának 52 százaléka közlekedett a schengeni övezetbe.

Shortly in English:

From the 30th March on, with the introduction of the summer timetable, the passengers travelling inside the Schengen-zone won't be controlled at Ferihegy Airport, and on all airports in the countries which joined Schengen-zone last December. From 30th March the terminal 2A will serve the passengers travelling inside the Schengen-zone, while the 2B will serve the non-Schengen traffic. On the transit corridor between the two terminals, six new passport checkpoints were placed. The terminal 1, which is serving discount airlines, will serve both Schengen and non-Schengen traffic, however the transit waiting room will be separated with a glass wall.

The new passenger terminal at the Bratislava Airport with annual capacity of 3.5 million travellers should be opened before the start of the summer season in early June, the SITA newswire wrote.

The project has entered its final stage and all regular and charter flights will move from the existing terminal to the new building following trial operation. The renovation of the existing terminal will start immediately after flight operations relocate to the new building, said the spokesperson for the airport, Dana Madunická.

The reconstruction of the existing terminal and construction of a new terminal are vital for providing services in the coming years, the airport said. The reconstruction of the existing terminal should be completed by February 2012 and annual capacity of the airport will then exceed five million passengers.

Costs of the construction of the new passenger terminal and the reconstruction of the currently used facility are calculated at about €96 million.
