View Full Version : St. Louis gets 2009 MLB All Star Game!!
Absolut355 January 16th, 2007, 04:22 AM You know my happy ass will be down there!! Even if I don't have a ticket! Hopefully Phase One of Ballpark Village will be completed by then as well, or at least almost finished. What a great time to show of the city, with all eyes of the nation on St. Louis (well, baseball fans anyways.) Here is the article -
New Busch gets '09 All-Star Game
St. Louis hasn't hosted premier MLB event since '66
Busch Stadium played host to a World Series in its first year of existence in 2006.
ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Busch Stadium in St. Louis will host baseball's All-Star game in 2009.
Baseball commissioner Bud Selig made the announcement Monday night at the 49th annual dinner hosted by the St. Louis chapter of the Baseball Writers' Association of America.
"There can't be a better baseball town in America," Selig said.
The decision, which was expected, gives St. Louis its first baseball All-Star game since 1966. The old Busch Stadium hosted the Midsummer Classic that year.
The new Busch Stadium opened last April, across the street from the old Busch, and the Cardinals went on to win the World Series in their first season in their new ballpark.
The 2007 All-Star game is scheduled for July 10 in San Francisco and the 2008 event is likely to be played at New York's Yankee Stadium, which is slated to be in its final season.
Back in October, during the NL championship series, Selig said it was very likely that St. Louis would be granted the 2009 showcase.

hudkina January 16th, 2007, 04:37 AM Good for St. Louis.:) Will the Ballpark Village plan be completed by then?
kcmetro January 16th, 2007, 04:50 AM Awesome!! I'll have to make the trip over there since I've never been to an All-Star game before. The closest it's been to me is Denver in '98.

kcmetro c'mon over! If you decide to come to STL for a game this summer let me know. We'll have a beer or 6! LOL.
And, is it just me, or does anyone else see the STL skyline above for the main SSC pic? I know they show random cities, but I've never seen that before! My mouth dropped open a little.
hudkina, I pray to God that at least Phase 1 of the BPV will be complete. They better not screw us over! I can post a link for info about it if you'd like.
NaptownBoy January 16th, 2007, 06:27 AM ^^Yeah, I thought I was seeing double when I noticed the STL banner overhead. Congrats to STL!
NaptownBoy January 16th, 2007, 06:28 AM The Midwest is finally getting the recognition that we deserve! Cheers.
i_am_hydrogen January 16th, 2007, 06:30 AM Let's have ourselves an STL banner, Absolute. Also, congratulations to St. Louis for grabbing the All Star Game. In the other major professional sports--NBA and NFL--the all star game doesn't mean much. But, for baseball, it's a tradition with a lot of historical value.

I agree! I couldn't believe it - good to know I wasn't seeing things.
Now we need MSP or Indy or any other MW city to take over as well (Chicago has been there I believe.)
kcmetro January 16th, 2007, 06:33 AM Point me to this banner thing. I'm lost.
Absolut355 January 16th, 2007, 06:36 AM Point me to this banner thing. I'm lost.
Look at the very top of any SSC page. You should see it. Old Busch is there but I still can't believe its up there. Very nice!

My picture must be different cause I just see some beach in France.
kcmetro January 16th, 2007, 06:40 AM kcmetro c'mon over! If you decide to come to STL for a game this summer let me know. We'll have a beer or 6! LOL.
Hell yeah! 6-12 beers sound good to me! Give me a Budweiser muthafucka!!!

I kinda like it! And I'm totally sober too I swear (unlike some other times on SSC)
Although those pics at the top of SSC are always fantastic.
But its weird that mine is different. What the hell did I do?

The reason why you and kcmetro still see that banner is because, technically, it's still Monday in Chicago/KC.
Here in Indianapolis I'm an hour ahead, so it's already Tuesday, and hence I'm seeing the new banner. I assume they change at midnight.
i_am_hydrogen January 16th, 2007, 06:58 AM Fair enough, but Absolut is still in the same time zone as we are.
Absolut355 January 16th, 2007, 07:01 AM Fair enough, but Absolut is still in the same time zone as we are.
Ooo, sorry hydrogen. I didn't even think of the different time zones. I'm actually in Dayton, OH, training for 2 months. Damn, and I thought I was special.
And that is an awesome avatar btw.
kcmetro January 16th, 2007, 07:01 AM Fair enough, but Absolut is still in the same time zone as we are.
Remember, he's trapped in the parallel universe so he's technically in 2 places at once, hence he isn't bound by time zones. FREAKY!!
Edit: Ok, he's in Dayton. Nevermind. LOL.
Elsongs January 16th, 2007, 08:23 AM That makes three consecutive All-Star Games hosted by NL ballparks: Pittsburgh's PNC Park, SF's Telecommunications Company Park and now St. Louis' Busch Stadium II.
Citylover January 16th, 2007, 08:32 AM yay see it now.
edsg25 January 16th, 2007, 09:02 AM I see the beach.
yes. but all those swimmers are in the Mississippi. Look carefully and you will see the Arch right next to lifeguard's chair and the cabanas.
edsg25 January 16th, 2007, 09:08 AM that's great for St. Louis; super showcase for the new stadium and the city. but just remember one thing: you guys will be representing 15 other NL cities as well as your own so you may need to (I hope this isn't blasphemy) to go technicolor in those seats instead of the usual sea of red. I can share some Cubbie blue if any of you St. Lousians are interested.:) :)
Seriously, this is terrific. St. Louis is a super city and is admittedly a classic baseball town. I, too, hope your Baseball Village will be completed by then (and that the Cubs have a 12 game lead over the second place Cardinals at the time of the game).
edsg25 January 16th, 2007, 09:10 AM That makes three consecutive All-Star Games hosted by NL ballparks: Pittsburgh's PNC Park, SF's Telecommunications Company Park and now St. Louis' Busch Stadium II.
Geez, elsongs, can't you keep up with current events. The SF ball park is now called YourWorldDelivered Park.
JivecitySTL January 16th, 2007, 01:00 PM Great news. I must say, though, that for a city as architecturally rich and beautiful, our downtown skyline from so many angles is quite unappealing. But that almost makes it cooler in a way, and so St. Louis...it's a no-frills, down-to-earth place that is humble and modest at first glance. I liken it to a plain jane kind of girl-- she doesn't dress too flashy when she goes out and she doesn't attract too many guys, but once you get inside her, she's a superfreak, superfreak, she's superfreak-y!
Bonjourtoledo January 16th, 2007, 01:37 PM If Detroit can host a 2009 MLB All-Star Game certainly St. Louis can.
edsg25 January 16th, 2007, 03:05 PM Great news. I must say, though, that for a city as architecturally rich and beautiful, our downtown skyline from so many angles is quite unappealing.
Jive, among cities, I know DC has always had a height limit (for obvious reasons). In Philadelphia, there was no height limit but an understanding that no building would reach higher in the sky than the Wm Penn statue atop city hall).
I realize that StL has no height restrictions. However, has there been a conscious attempt not to exceed the height of the arch????
ShowMeKC January 16th, 2007, 05:27 PM GJ STL! Now as a state, Missouri will host the All-Star Game in 2009, and then again sometime between 2010 and 2014. I've already been rooting for the Cards, and hopefully by then the Royals can get their act together...
kcmetro January 16th, 2007, 05:36 PM It had slipped my mind, but I just realized that KC will be getting the all-star game sometime between 2010 and 2014. The renovations to Kauffman should be done by the end of 2009 so it'll be just in time. The only bad thing about it is visitors will have to drive out to the burbs for the game. Kinda wish we had built a new stadium downtown instead. I can't be picky though because supposedly these renovations will be top notch. I can't imagine the atmosphere and experience will compare to STL though, seeing as they'll have Ballpark Village up and running by '09 and the great baseball fans of STL to support it. I think I'll still make the trip east for that one. My buddy is a huge Cards fan so I'm sure we'd have a good time.
ShowMeKC January 16th, 2007, 06:09 PM Well, at least they'll only be going about 6 miles down I-70 from DT. By then much of our DT will be ready.
GO MISSOURAH! (not the Tigers...)
Absolut355 January 17th, 2007, 07:54 AM That makes three consecutive All-Star Games hosted by NL ballparks: Pittsburgh's PNC Park, SF's Telecommunications Company Park and now St. Louis' Busch Stadium II.
Actually, Bud "clusterfu*k" Selig said that he changed the rules for the past two years - PNC in 2006 and AT&T in 2007. Both NL teams. And Yankee Stadium, deservedly, will get it in 2008. It is the last year in a classic stadium.
And, what I hoped from this post, was to see the future progress of the BPV.
you guys will be representing 15 other NL cities as well as your own so you may need to (I hope this isn't blasphemy) to go technicolor in those seats instead of the usual sea of red. I can share some Cubbie blue if any of you St. Lousians are interested.
Oh edsg, I know you are in Chicago, but I will talk baseball all day long with you!! And yes, talking Cubbie Blue in a thread about STL hosting the RED seats of the All Star Game is blasphemy...LOL I love baseball fans!!

What's the old aphorism: "You're your own worst critic."? Are there improvements to the built environment that can me made? Of course, but to me, STL's core looks good. And beyond that, STL has an incredible housing stock, one of the best I've ever seen. There's a lot to be proud of.
