There was a Tv program in VTC i caught when they interviewed the lady who owns Lancaster.. her story was sad :ohno: but she is definitely a true Vietnamese woman.. resilient and strong :)

the 10-yr-in-contruction petro tower turn out to be one of the best lookin' buildings in saigon! the old model is quite bland imo.

UBND TP HCM vừa xác định ranh giới khu trung tâm thành phố để quy hoạch chi tiết và thiết kế đô thị. Các khu vực trên có tổng diện tích khoảng 885 ha.

Khu trung tâm thành phố sẽ gồm các phường: Bến Thành, Bến Nghé, Nguyễn Thái Bình, Phạm Ngũ Lão, Đa Kao (quận 1) và phường 6, một phần phường 7 (quận 3), dải bờ tây sông Sài Gòn kéo dài từ cầu Sài Gòn đến gần Tân Thuận với chiều rộng khoảng 300-400 m.

Theo chỉ đạo của UBND TP, một tổ công tác liên ngành được thành lập gồm lãnh đạo các đơn vị quy hoạch - kiến trúc, giao thông - công chính, Trường đại học Kiến trúc TP HCM... để nghiên cứu, đề xuất nội dung thực hiện quy hoạch, xác định cụ thể ranh giới hai khu vực bờ sông Sài Gòn và khu vực công viên 23/9. Mặt khác thành phố sẽ mời các chuyên gia Pháp, Đức và các ngành liên quan cùng tham gia phản biện.

LS, that house you mention will be demolished, that's the sales center... If you go behind it, you can get really close to the construction, but the time I went there was a guard, so I just turned around, what a coward!!!

It'd be great to have that Saigon Grand Hotel expansion. The one-story motorcycle dealer on that site now is sad. But I saw a note on their door that said they were moving. :)

+ I finally saw movement with the Rex hotel annex, a crane is on site and they're working...

+ We can say goodbye (thank goodness!) to the Eden project, the shopping arcade has just been refurbished and it's super elegant. The movie theater that was in the back there is being gutted and converted into a shopping mall.

+ I thought that the 2x30 phase 2 of the Cantaville will be behind the 3x16 phase 1. I was wrong. It will be in front of them, between the phase 1 and the highway. They are doing test piling right now. I wouldn't want to live there myself, in the dirty air over the highway toll gates.

I'm surely that from the penhouse of Indochina Park Tower , we'll have a wonderful view to the center of Saigon but I'm not allowed getting in this building due to its security guard :( , anybody here try to get acquainted with him and ask for taking some photos from that place :)

Three State-run major commercial banks have agreed to extend a credit of US$80 million to the Financial Tower project, the highest building in Viet Nam to date.

The credit contract was signed in Ha Noi on Oct. 16 by the Bank for Investment and Development, the Viet Nam Foreign Trade Bank and the Bank of Industry and Commerce with the Binh Minh Import-Export Production and Trade Co. Ltd.

The Financial Tower which has been designed to have six underground floors will stand at a height of 290 metres with 72 storeys.

The construction of the project, estimated to cost US$125 million, started in July this year and is scheduled to complete in 2009.

Hmm, that building on the left is pretty tall and Sacombank is u/c about 10 storeys. Are you sure?

i think it's exactly the site of the sacombank,besides there is no other building u/c in that area. U can see a bunch of colorful tubhouses (about 8-10 st)on the opposite site of sacombank building.

Some very interesting pics, Milkyway. You must have taken them early in the morning, the air has been so bad recently. What was your vantage point? The Nhieu Loc apartments??

Yes yes Jaro , I took them in the morning , about 8 or 9am and I think it's the best view at that time ( but it's not often look like that ^_^ , there are many foggy >_< that I find it difficult to choose the appreciate time for taking photos ) and I took all of them from the window of my house on 17th floor of Mieu Noi apartment ( along Nhieu Loc canal ) and whenever there are some changes in SG I'll take photos for us :) , what a pity , the view is very nice in the night but I don't know how to use PS for making photos more clearly :bash:

Oh I don't see anything change titanic , but actually I think the site of Sacombank isn't nice , along the street there are many electric wires , adding many " o ga " , and don't have any tree on the pavement >_< , the condition of street is too bad ...., the authorities should improve this street immediately but it seem like very difficult :bash:

the authority is planning to put 80% of saigon's wires underground by 2010...
btw...saigon's skyline is really taking shape quickly compare to 2000

Even with all of such attracting picturesques, we are still far from best; we need to be better and better and do not attempt to destroy them. My two cents philosophy is somewhat good philosophy, don't you agree?

emporis has updated on vietnam. Dont know whether it was our friend jaro who did it or not,but the update seem funny: many projects incompleted but on emporis they were completed and on the contrary. Ex: Avalon is still u/c on emporis while sacombank 18 st and lancaster has been completed.

according to a source (i forgot where i got it),on sept the clearance for Kimdo and Tax plaza has been 60% done,but i dont think any activities will take place soon.

i don't know what you're talking about but compare a recent pic of KimDo hotel to last year.....you'll see they just added a bunch of plaster arts to the main facade and turn the modern 20s French art-deco building into a 19th century French classical hotel

i thought they will build on top of tax plaza as a modern addition?...tax plaza has just been renovated a few years ago...it doesn't make to take it down now

I bought a condo for investment in Saigon (i.e., Saigon Pearl) ... However, I was told by friends that half of the investment went kaput because of mismanagement. I was shown several half-ass finished hotels and condos that have no completion date scattered all over Saigon. These are considered total loss from investment point of view. Couple of things you got to consider when buying properties for investment in VN,

1. Do not even consider any state owned enterprise development (this is where investers lost the most of their investment because of corruption and mismanagement)

2. Consider only foreign enterprise for investment (sad isn't it). Taiwan and Hong Kong enterprises are the safest bet for actual scheduled completion.

3. Thi Nghe, Thu Thiem (close proximity to the enterprise zone of Saigon commercial district 1 and 3) look real promising interms of potential growth.

4. Binh Thanh, Thu Duc, Bien Hoa will be fantastic places to invest as soon as the International Airport commenced sometime in 2007s somewhere in Bien Hoa or Ba Ria (does anyone know where ?). Look for this to be the hottest investment for properties because of already established industrial bases there.

5. Phu My Hung looks good from the Vietnamese point of view who live in Saigon (it's still too far for commercial consideration from foreigner point of view) but I would not consider unless more commercial and international industries are vested to support the employment for the area.

6. You can only lease the property from the state for 50-year term (paying tax and all) but the property will be returned to the state at the end of the lease (ridiculous and stupid law!!!)

Buying properties for investment is still considered big risk for foreigners (even for overseas Vietnamese) because the law on the book is still sketchy at best. I was shown by several promised on-going change of law but it's not warranted. The state is still the final arbitrator for owning instead of homestead as in the west. They got to change this in order to attract more investment.

It's very funny :), I was told that the people in Saigon called these bridge projects "Cầu Sập" before even completion. 'cause they expected to be a sinking bridge, EVERY ONE of them. Must be the commie's proudest accomplishment!!! :)

Mình lập topic này để mọi người cùng nhau chiêm ngưỡng "rung nhan" kiến trúc của mấy toà nhà ở Sài Gòn , tiện thể mỗi khi Sài Gòn có toà nhà nào hoàn tất việc xây dựng , ai có hình thì post lên cho mọi người cùng xem :drunk: , với điều kiện là toà nhà đó phải cao từ 10 tầng trở lên có bề rộng và độ cao phải tương xứng với nhau:) ( có thể dưới 10 tầng nếu có kiến trúc đẹp và nổi bật nhưng phải có độ cao tối thiểu từ 7 tầng trở lên ), Rất mong được sự ủng hộ của mọi người :cheers:

a lot have changed since 2003...just look at the pictures...i'l bet if you go back now...you would not recognize saigon...so many high rises...so many 'pho 24'...and buses...and cars..and smogs...and people...and cellphones...and paved roads...i'l leave room for others to add....

I went to vietnam in 2000. And about saigon nothing really changed. Maybe except a little bit more car and that it. The project will be project in saigon since when i came back in 2006 i saw nothing new so sad.

Hanoi growht so fast probabily more modern than saigon right now. More high rise building more underconstruction they make so much effort may be for velebrate the Hanoi millenium. I found it amezing. In 2000 u can see a deep difference between Saigon and Hanoi but Now i see more high builing in saigon

that park used to be haunted because it was built on a former cemetary ground. now people digging it up and bringing people down to same level of the ground where dead people used to burried........someday this undeground parking lot and shopping mall will be rank as the world most haunted parking lot and shopping mall.
and if ya know the history of this place you will think twice about using the washroom down there.
I've watched many haunted movies I know what happen

I don't know much about biology, but usually whatever shape and size of tree you see above ground, they have the same shape and size roots underground. It's like a reflection.
that's why so many trees in Saigon and Hanoi colasped during strong storms....not because they are weak, but people just digging up the streets and put so many damn things under there...ya killed the roots
