ive never really thought of it that way, neways i gave Dallas a 10
BG918 June 8th, 2003, 03:13 AM Dallas has a pretty impressive skyline, really dense and a lot of height. Looking down the highways going into downtown it looks just like a wall of skyscrapers. If Dallas had more of a signature tower, something really tall, it would be even cooler. Nice mix of boxes and other shapes, with a lot of old and new. Dallas really is a skyscraper city, and not just in downtown. 9/10
tocoto June 9th, 2003, 02:10 AM I have never lived in Dallas but have been there many times for business. According to SS.com no building over 500 feet has gone up there since 1988, thats 15 years ago. In person the skyline does not look like a mix of old and new, it looks like most of it was built at one time. I think Dallas looks much better and bigger in pictures than in reality. I remember the fisrt time I flew in, I thought the building with the neion outline looked really cool from the plane. Now when I see it I wonder when something new will happen nearby. I give the skyline a 7/10 due to height and quantity, but with reservations. For such a fast growing metro with a belief it is going to be a preeminent US city in the coming decades, downtown is practically at a standstill.
Evergrey June 12th, 2003, 01:02 AM 7.5
The Dallas skyline is really a mixture of 80's po-mo and horrible 60's/70's box architecture.
The 921 ft Bank of America is a rather sharp building... especially framed by the green argon at night... but the 2nd tallest Renaissance is one of the ugliest 800 footers in the US...
the futuristic glass fantasy of Fountain Place is awesome though
Overall, a rather nice skyline, but lacking the great old quality I desire... though the Mercantile is rather nice
rjlevins June 15th, 2003, 04:10 PM I guess Dallas doesn't deserve to be listed as a poll. I am really sick of Dallas being overlooked. It is one of the largest and most important cities in the US and I really wish people would start giving it some credit.
james2390 June 16th, 2003, 03:24 AM true
The Messiah June 21st, 2003, 01:24 AM 8.5/10! looks impressive! And it has a very large cluster!
grasshopper June 21st, 2003, 03:22 AM not all that impressed, where is the green space to balance the picture, I mean adjacent parks, or is it all just buildings, a little contrast would help it immensely, also though it would have many more huge buildings given it's size and importance in the US
gave it a 7 or a six, can't remember now
pwright1 July 1st, 2003, 05:51 AM Very impressive, especially Fountain Place and Momentum Place. Impressive modern architecture IMO.

james2390 July 8th, 2003, 10:15 AM what three people gave dallas a 3 and below?
ekstaza July 9th, 2003, 02:07 PM I give : 9.
connection July 9th, 2003, 07:31 PM from the distance, the skyline looks pretty good.
but i`m a little bid shocked about the emptyness in the downtown.
really good looking skylines have also a vital city life and the basics for city life: city houses and not parking grounds.
so give 7 points for the skyline viewed from distance, 0 points for the rest of the city, especially for the parking grounds <;-)
SprattyToronto July 10th, 2003, 11:00 PM Looks very nice in that one shot. Nice variety of height and style. 8/10.
james- Don't worry about the 3 people... theres 15 of them for Toronto that gave 3 or under.

Just my personal experience, but Dallas epitomizes loud-mouthed, ethno-centric Texans and ugly Americans who wonder why they are hated the world over, or alternatively make infantile dismissals such as: <texas-twang>"Well son, that's just because everyone is jealous and hates freedom."</texas-twang>
As for the skyline, impressive -- but only if you are a tasteless simpleton easily impressed by argon tubing and Christmas lights as you drive by in your mega SUV/pickup truck with Toby Keith's innane jingo anthems blaring on your stereo. Either that, or you're a wannabee urbanite riding on the light-rail/choo-choo train, blinded by boosterism -- as in their riduculous claims like "more music than Nashville and more shopping than New York!"
But I'm feeling generous so I give it a big 5.5 -- along with a big FU to big D and its big head.

dcb11 November 30th, 2003, 05:46 PM Congratulations, trussedtube. You just managed to turn a harmless, non-political thread into a angry, mindless rant. If you don't like the skyline of Dallas, fine. Just say that. What you posted is no better than someone saying they hate Paris and all French people because they didn't support the Iraq war, or that they hate Dubai because its full of Muslims, who are all terrorists. Infantile dismissals indeed.
trussedtube November 30th, 2003, 09:44 PM I'll concede that this was probably not the best discussion to politicize. But as for "mindless rant," I'd have to immodestly disagree -- it was an exceptionally well-written rant, haha.
However, there were some shortcomings with the post, namely: 1) not qualifying it as an opportunity to slam other aspects of Dallas I find distasteful besides just the skyline; 2) not elaborating more on the reasons why I have such venom towards Dallas; and 3) not relating these criticisms towards the original topic, the skyline.
The key problems I have are the big egos and the bigots. And like I said, this is based on personal, first-hand experience, being a former long-time Texan -- not just based on some secondhand info/propaganda feed from Fox news, et. al.
Anyway, based on that real-life experience, I can say that Dallas is one of the most racist and bigoted cities I've ever spent extended time in. I've experienced and observed more sickening racist incidents -- both overt and subtle -- in this town than anywhere else. My "jingo/Toby Keith" commentary misdirected readers somewhat, but it was quite evocative of a certain image/civic persona -- both realistic and relevant.
That criticism alone makes my post quite a bit more legitimate than any output from your hypothetical Paris/Dubai bashers -- regardless of your ideology.
As for the big egos issue, I thought I did address that somewhat: the excessive civic boosterism; the ridiculous self-comparisons to NYC and Nashville. Going further: The city's need to sneer at the rest of Texas and the South, assuming they are such a world-class metropolis, when they are really not much different -- a bunch of provincial, suburban, quasi-rural communities loosely stitched together with freeways. The preponderance of $30,000/year millionaires with a sense of entitlement that doesn't match their salaries. The self-importance that pervades the city.
And the big egos aspect relates to the original topic -- the skyline -- because many residents can't seem to get over how great their mediocre skyline is without acknowledging that other skylines -- e.g. Houston, SF, Minneapolis, Pittsburgh -- can compete. Their argument always seems to conclude with "well, the lights look way cooler," and a self-satisfied smirk.
Sure, not all of DFW has that attitude, but there really is no denying that it exists there in large amounts. If it didn't, I probably would be willing to give a higher score and retract my expletive. But that's not the case, so my comments stand.
But hey, at least I really like the Mavericks -- that's one good b-ball team. OK, now that was off-topic.
Tom1968 December 1st, 2003, 03:08 AM 9. I like it :)
dutchmetal December 1st, 2003, 05:09 PM 7,5/10 niceskyline. I like the density, but there should be one or two signature towers to complete it.
dcb11 December 1st, 2003, 05:26 PM Trussedtube, I'm sure there are a lot of bigots in Dallas, as there are everywhere. However, I'm sure the vast majority of people in Dallas are not in any way bigots. Dallas is a major metro area, and as such, is relatively diverse compared to a small rural town in which generalizations are easier to make. 40% of Dallas is non-White. Surely not all of these people can fit the generalization. Let's face it. American cities are becoming more and more alike. Dallas isn't that different from any other middle-American metropolis. Where it differs is in the extreme cases, which is what you have noticed. We always notice people who are racist or extremely pretentious, or whatever. Let's say I'm walking down the street and over the course of an hour, 2 people scream a racial slur at me. I'm gonna think that the city must be pretty racist, since that usually doesn't happen at all. However, I probably passed 1000 people on the street at that time. So maybe 2/1000 people are racist. That .2%, and even that scenario is highly unlikely.
Second, you point out that people in Dallas have big heads, and act as if Dallas is a great city, and comparable to those other great cities you mentioned. Well, maybe it isn't, but I would never fault someone for saying so. Some people really do like Dallas (or Charlotte, or Minneapolis, etc...) as much or more than they like New York or Paris. This isn't being big-headed. Its just being proud of their city. And I don't really think most Dallas residents would actually say their city is like NY. Its not like NY, and they're happy with that. If they really were NY wannabes, would they listen to Toby Keith? Nah, they'd pretend to be intellectual socialists, since that's considered hip in NYC these days.
You apparently live in Chicago, trussedtube. I'm sure there are some people from places like NY who would mock Chicago as being a stupid Midwestern (as compared to Dallas' Southern) city that pretends to be as important or cultural as NY or Boston. Well, as I'm sure you know, they'd be wrong. Chicago is one of the great American cities, even if it is different than NY or Boston. And if you're gonna complain about big-headedness, you'll find more than a fair share in NY or Boston. Boston describes itself as the "Hub of the Universe." NY as "Capital of the World" (and keep in mind this phrase is older than the UN). These are both distortions of the true importance of these cities. This just shows that even if a city is truely one of the best in the nation, it thinks of itself as THE best in the world or universe, and sees other cities as being vastly inferior. I'm not even gonna get started on some of the opinions ive heard in Paris about American cities being cultural wastelands (and yes, that includes NY).
Also, I think you are oversimplifying the whole "Americans hated by foreigners" thing, in which you say Texans say "they're just jealous of our freedom." We should never dismiss any opinions that foreigners might have, but that doesn't mean we should arrive at a conclusion that agrees with them! There are many reasons why people in other nations dislike America. Some dislike the American people, others dislike the current administration. Some people are simply motivated by blind religion-based hate which is all they've ever known. Others are, in fact, angered by the wealth of America compared to the poverty of their own nations (which they tend to assume means America stole their fair share). This isn't so far from jealousy. Some people (including in the US) are so ignorant of the facts, that they form false judgements about America and its allies. Also, obviously French anti-American people dislike the US for different reasons than Saudi anti-American people do (in most cases).
Finally, there is no doubt in my mind that you'd encounter just as much racism in Dubai, and maybe in Paris, although toward different groups. Thats enough reason for me to not live in those cities (for the time being), but I know that not all Parisians and Dubai-ans(?) are racist. Plus, your whole post lost credibility with the part about the mavericks. Who cares about the NBA anymore?:)

bron December 17th, 2003, 02:21 AM Individually, some of the buildings in Dallas are very nice. But when you take them as a whole, I don't think they are as impressive as Houston's. In other words, I think Houston's skyline is better than Dallas's, but I wouldn't say Houston's buildings per se are better. you get my drift...
7.5 to Dallas. 8 to Houston.

Monkey November 18th, 2004, 10:12 PM A lot of the buildings seem really dated and belong to the 70s/80s, but there's a few nice ones in there.
Overall the skyline has an impressive amount of density, but it needs a better-defined pinnacle I think, and more modern-looking buildings.
7.5
DamienK December 12th, 2004, 03:47 PM 8.5/10. I love the glassy ones.
DunceConfederacy December 12th, 2004, 09:53 PM gotta give my hometown a 10. I do wish the tallest (BoA) was moreso in the center, and I do agree that the Reunion Tower looks a bit awkward from some angles, but being in it gives you a great view of the skyline and most of the city. knock 'em dead Dallas!

HoustonTexas December 20th, 2004, 05:25 AM I don't like the Dallas Skyline. The only Building I am crazy about Dallas is the JP Morgan Chase Tower! Which is one (of many) of my personal favs.
The skyline: 5/10
The People: 2/10
The Dart: 8/10
The Ego: 1/10
overall 3/10.
I am not bashing it because its Houston's rival, but its just simply not that great. I liked it when I went, and Turtle Creek is really pretty. But the fact that Dallas is really nothing without Fort Worth or Irving kinda makes it a sad place. Nothing really happens in Dallas, all the action is in its suburbs. And I like how Fort Worth doesn't like to include its self with Dallas! haha... They claim to have more then they actually do, and that there numero uno no matter what. Plus the crime in Dallas is absolutly rediculessly high. But, with the Downtown + Victory Plaza + Trinity River revitalization, Dallas could easily become a 8/10 in no time. But the new Performing arts center blows...

8.5/10

Several of the older buildings have been or are being turned into lofts. tons of old-timey people are moving downtown. it's getting better all the time. stlouiscityboy April 7th, 2005, 08:34 AM HAving spent alot of time in Dallas i love their skyline which also spreads out over the city to the north and west. One reason they dont build over the 60 floors mark is the low flying planes into Love Field which is about 2miles north of the city center. But only one building has ever gone over the mark and its the Bank Of America Building which is around 72 floors and out of the flight paths.

Nouvellecosse June 16th, 2005, 12:11 PM Looks great at night, but pretty ordinary (for an American city) by day. I'd like it better if it had a more interesting setting (ocean, lake, river, hills/mountains, etc). Also, I like skylines that show some depth in time (not appearing as if they
were built all at once). Pretty good size though. 6.5

rantanamo June 17th, 2005, 10:26 AM had never bothered to read this post because I knew some of the crazy posts would go up. I was right. Dallas just evokes a certain emotion in many. Surprised about so many Houston comparisons as well as people saying its not green and even saying "dusty" lol.
Dallas' skyline has not changed much in the last 20 years. Mostly shorter towers have been built all around Dallas and its metro, former multiple shorter towers. That is beginning to change. Victory has started and is building taller and taller to the point that the skyline will finally change. Even more exciting is that building is starting in the CBD itself as well as lots of building speculation going on. We are all fortunate to witness this. Most skylines that build a lot have so many buildings that rapid change in the skyline is almost unoticeable. That's never been the case in downtown Dallas, as the buildings have gone up generation by generation with gaps between and in a pretty densely packed manner. We are entering one of the rapid building periods as Uptown is almost full and demand has pushed most of the speculation south of Woodall Rodgers. Should be very interesting to look at the skyline by 2010 as most new projects will be very noticeable additions. Should be fun.
From a few days ago. Can't wait for Victory One to start next door to the W(building under construction. It will be 600+ft tall.
http://www.pbase.com/montecarloss/image/44433208/original.jpg
as for comments about wanting more building throughout the city, there are plenty right Uptown. The photo is a bit old. Right before the W broke ground on the left of the pic.

carfentanyl July 5th, 2005, 02:53 PM What keeps amazing me about a lot of American cities is that you have the CBD with pretty high skyscrapers and practically next door it can already looks so small-townish...
Still, there are some very fine buildings in the skyline which made the skyline top-notch in the 80's. At the moment I'll give it a 7+.
Fountain Place is still my favorite Dallas building though!

OkieTexan July 28th, 2005, 02:17 AM So being born and somewhat rasied in the Dallas area, I love my home city. However, seems like many of you have a point as the skyline is somewhat dated. I just have to ask those of you in the know, when is Dallas gonna have a new signature tower? Or even an updated skyscraper or two thats at least above 700ft. tall? BTW, I rated Dallas a 10 :)

No Mercy October 2nd, 2005, 12:18 AM Dallas hasn't been cooking up a notch, from where it stands out to be looking alright from the air, but being there is another thing. The skyline is telling me that Dallas has to be a new city with upcoming skyscrapers, because all of them are newish like, starting from the 80s. Still a small city compared to Los Angeles and New York City, but it serves a good cup of tea. My kind of city. 8.5/10

That's the W Hotel & Residences. That whole area over there is being developed. Most of it will be residential. There will be a 45 story residential tower right next to the W.

nomarandlee October 30th, 2005, 06:39 PM I used to detest the Dallas skyline. I always felt it was so over the top modern and so uniform with little variety in its skyrise architecture. I have grown to kind of like it and respect it though. There is a sense of synergy and unique style it has going for it. It is pretty unique and stand outs regardless of what one thinnks about it.
All the emphaisis on dark glass sheath buildings is pretty intreasting. I wouldn't want it to predominate in most skylines but the fact that Dallas has made it its signature is pretty cool.

Being from Dallas I love this city just as much as anyone that does. However, I voted on here awhile back and saw the different reactions to the skyline itself. The more I read and think the more I agree that the skyline is for the most part is dated. Good or bad thing? Don't know. Is the BoA tower always gonna be the tallest in downtown or are there plans to build a taller one? Didn't know what the word on the street was but I seem to think that most people seem to feel that the BoA tower is Dallas' baby and it won't be outdone or at least for a very long time?...

I was in Vegas last week, and the reactions I received from people after telling them that I was from Dallas was interesting. Unless they were from Texas, I got mostly negative reactions. I learned the following:
Apparently, a lot of people lost money on the Mavs
People from California hate the Cowboys
And at least three people out there still haven't forgiven Dallas for the Kennedy thing. It's amazing; do people still hate Buffalo for the McKinley assassination?
Anyway, those are great photos, Maconahey.

NMBS1 August 16th, 2006, 08:00 AM 3 things about Dallas: great nightlife, a great city for business, and some of the hottest women in the country
Sielbeck August 23rd, 2006, 04:19 AM I have always liked Dallas buildings and always will, no matter what the people who actually live in Dallas may act like. Just because you don't like the people, the basketball team, or the fact that a president was assassinated there, don't take it out on the skyline. It's more understandible to give the skyline a low rating for something like "Well, I'm just not a fan of glass buildings or bright neon lighting."
For the record, I have been a Texan most of my life and have lived in two of the suburbs of Dallas. Overall, I find that people who live in and around Dallas are pretty easy to get along with. Sure there's bad people (i.e. racists, haters of anything not related to Dallas or Texas), but there's also people like that in any big city of the world. What I would like to see is for someone to prove hands down that a particular city is better than any other of the same size by using non-biased facts about both cities, not personal opinions. This is not the thread to do that in, however. Take it somewhere else.
BTW, I give this skyline a 9.

08en January 5th, 2007, 09:44 AM Dallas has a nice skyline, but it's not that impressive. It looks fairly generic-- just a bunch of tall office towers. They don't really have a distinctive shape to them, and it's kind of laid out weird. Also, there isn't a mix of old and new buildings-- it's just all new ones-- and there is no "design" to it. Its just a sold wall of office towers. I would give it a 6.

Dallas has some of the best individual buildings out of any skyline with wonderfully creative designs. Love the dazzling display of lighting at night. Those who gave it a three or less probably don't like daring designs with some ornamentation and flashy lighting effects. I say you can keep your boring bullshit.
