I think, the skyline needs more skyscrapers.

De Snor June 5th, 2003, 11:51 AM to many gaps between the towers
KM1410 June 5th, 2003, 02:08 PM For a city of Clevelands size, I thought it would have a better skyline. I think Columbus and Cincy both have better skylines. I do like the Key Tower though.
6.0/10

I'm torn over Cleveland...
it has the Terminal Tower... an amazing beaux-arts masterpiece... and one of the best skyscrapers in the world...
it has Key... which is very tall... and very impressive and new
but it has nothing else worthwhile...
only 4 scrapers over 500 ft... and a lot of ugly buildings...
so I give it a 7

PegRules04 January 12th, 2004, 02:12 AM Love the towers that do exist, but for a city of almost 3 milllion metro, could have more. Lacks density, at least from the views shown here. 7.....
zaceman January 13th, 2004, 02:45 AM http://www.zaceman.com/LJ/parmadowntown.jpg
I've tried taking pictures of the skyline and this particular one is from the suburbs.
Its a really difficult skyline to take pictures of. Lop-sided views are basically from every angle.
I think the cancelling of the Ameritrust building (1200ft) and the Progressive insurance tower (850ft, designed by Frank Gehry) is why theres huge gaps between the really tall buildings. And tough economic times right now, nothing is going to be built for a while.
surface parking lots are everywhere on the western half of downtown. on some of the most expensive parcels of land in ohio. theres even a giant one on a corner of public square! heh
ParraMan January 13th, 2004, 05:00 PM 7.5
Has some very nice buildings, esp Key Tower, and skyline as a whole looks reasonably modern, ie not overdone with the stuff from the 60's.... It has a few too many gaps between the talls, and not much a gradual increase in height, although has quite a well defined core area.

AndrewC March 5th, 2004, 03:38 PM What it has is very nice but it needs to fill the gaps!
GM March 6th, 2004, 03:24 AM Nice skyline.
Although there are few very tall buildings, this skyline is one of the most impressive and beautiful in NorthEast America (after NY and Chicago of course).
I love Key tower and Terminal tower.

Dense to the right but that seems to fade as you go right of the skyline in that one photo.
james2390 March 10th, 2004, 11:47 PM It reminds me of Charlotte and Indianapolis in this photo:)
sky vs sky March 11th, 2004, 05:25 AM it's fairly sparse but what you've got in the sky is quite pretty. Despite a lack of towers the beauty of the buildings held my eye for quite some time.
7 out of 10.
JRQ March 14th, 2004, 08:50 PM Very impressive skyline...Is the tallest building a BOA building? Very creppy...If I didnt know where I was, I'd think that was Charlotte!
INDYFIEND March 15th, 2004, 03:27 PM The improvement of the riverfront and the lighting on the bridges add some spice to it, but other than that and the Key Tower, kinda bland. I hope those in power consider the gaps in the skyline when they're planning the next building.
zaceman June 24th, 2004, 02:40 AM http://zaceman.com/LJ/6-23-04/skyline.jpg
Another photo of the skyline.
And believe me the surface parking lot on public square is the first place recommended for any new skyscraper proposal.
r2 June 28th, 2004, 10:02 PM been to cleveland, skyline is nice, they've done fantastic things there since the river caught fire in the 70s

DamienK December 12th, 2004, 11:20 PM 7/10. I like the Key Tower. From a distance the white crown looks like a snow cap on a narrow brown mountain.
TritaniumZ3 December 13th, 2004, 01:20 AM The Key Tower looks like BoA in Charlotte.
Jules December 13th, 2004, 04:03 AM Key Tower's very nice. 8.

renell December 20th, 2004, 05:06 AM 7/10 definately a couple more talls would help strengthen its rating in ROS.
but on the positive side, it definately looks better than 20 fugly 500ft scrapers
i_am_hydrogen January 5th, 2005, 11:32 PM 6.5/10. Although the Terminal Tower is a great piece of beaux-arts architecture, it and the other two tallest buildings (The Key Tower and BP Tower) make for strange bedfellows--they just don't work well together. The skyline also has some ugly gaps and overall just doesn't have any vibrancy to it.
hauntedheadnc January 6th, 2005, 04:46 AM Dense and historic with some dazzling signature towers. A 9.
Kevin J January 7th, 2005, 06:24 PM 6.5 From the most flattering angles, it's not bad. The worst angles would be the shots taken from the lake b/c all you see are the 3 biggies and how much space is between them.
The photos taken from the Case Western area (which have the advantage of elevation) allow you to see that while the east side of downtown lacks the height around the big 3 on the west side, there are a lot of buildings over there that make for good length on the skyline.
caleb1981 January 8th, 2005, 07:50 AM The Key Tower is not the tallest building between Chicago and New York. Atlanta has a building that is 1023 feet tall and it is between Chicago and New York.
who is mike jones? January 13th, 2005, 12:03 PM Sorry Drew Carrey, Cleveland sucks. theres nothing about this dull rust belt city to distinguish it from the rest; and yes every other city in Ohio that starts with C has a better skyline.
VanSeaPor March 20th, 2005, 01:13 AM Yuk. 6/10
MattSal March 20th, 2005, 01:18 AM Some very nice buildings, but could use some more filler towers and density. I give it an 8/10.
StevenW March 20th, 2005, 02:13 AM It's pretty and original. :D
I'll say 7/10 :)
SoboleuS March 21st, 2005, 11:50 AM It has some really tall and cool looking buildings but also too many gaps between the towers ;) 7,5/10
Darrell March 26th, 2005, 08:51 PM 9/10. Great buildings and more impressive in person. Only issue is the spacing from some angles.
Accura4Matalan March 26th, 2005, 08:55 PM 8/10. I like the gaps between the towers because it allows you to admire them. It just needs a few more of them.
Jaybird March 27th, 2005, 01:00 AM I love the skyline, and good heightage for an awesome city, but more density could be used as well. 8/10. Cleveland is one of my cities to visit on my list.
Azn_chi_boi April 1st, 2005, 01:08 PM 8, ok towers.. but isnt the one in Altanta or Philly taller?
Cleveland should really take advantage of the Lake.
Why is it call "Mistake on the Lake"?
Edit:: Cleveland's key tower is taller than that Philly tower by one meter.
B@dGuYoM April 1st, 2005, 01:40 PM 8/10
C-Town April 6th, 2005, 03:26 AM Cleveland needs some love. My favorite skyline is Chicago but after returning home it's always nice to see the familiar Cleveland skyline as well. It has its own personality that a lot of other shylines lack and eventhough it only has 3 fairly tall towers, they are very recognizable. So I gave it an 8 because it has its own beauty without being a cliche American, mid-sized skyline.
Nouvellecosse June 16th, 2005, 01:43 PM 8/10. I like the gaps between the towers because it allows you to admire them. It just needs a few more of them.
Totally agree. I love this skyline, much better than I was expecting. One of my new U.S. favs. Very majestic.
KansasCity#1 July 5th, 2005, 08:18 PM i gave it a 3.5 for a city of its size it is small
VansTripp July 6th, 2005, 05:02 AM It's little bad. 4/10
Xabi July 7th, 2005, 04:05 PM I like Cleveland and industry cities. ;)

bob rulz October 23rd, 2005, 12:17 PM Some good-looking individual towers, but not nearly enough density and pretty much no plans for future (Emporis shows 1 under construction and 1 approved). Not what I expected from a city the importance of Cleveland. 7/10.

Instead of what I see with Cleveland's skyline visually, I tend to see what could be in my mind's eye. Enormous potential with the waterfront and all the great museums already in place.
Imagine two 55-story towers in close proximity to the tallest towers already completed~~~
An old Rust-belt city that is now rust-free:)

That's the best I could do. The weird thing about Cleveland is that it looks a lot smaller in pictures because the Key tower is 947 feet tall. So, the dense skyline to the east looks small and the 3 big towers look out of place eventhough the skyline looks very big in person.

bhagavadgita September 27th, 2006, 03:31 AM {9/10}* One of my top 5 skylines. It would be a 10 if there were just 4 or 5 more 450 foot + buildings, but its already a really dense skyline.
Kiss the Rain October 6th, 2006, 11:39 AM Not very good for one of the biggest metro in the US, oh but then again, in the US, the size of metro doesnt have to be proportional to skyline size lol.

I love Cleveland. It is a great city with so much going for it. It was one of the cities i visted in the US, and one of my favorites. Its home to major corporations making it a very diversified economy compared to cities close by like Detroit who is stuck on the auto industry. Cleveland has an amazing skyline, and when i was there many new developments were going on around the city. I really would like to see more taller towers go in, but it has an amazing lakefront, and awesome towers now. Cleveland really is a city that rocks!!

usermel March 19th, 2011, 08:27 AM We'll I like Cleveland's skyline. I dig it, it has one building that is so high, it kinda makes the skyline look smaller in pictures than in person. The highest building is 947ft., that makes the surrounding buildings look smaller than they are. The 3 tallest make the rest look small when you compare but, Cleveland has a nice skyline as a whole.
Maybe they don't have the best in the USA but, better than 75% of the US. I give Cleveland a 8! To the haters in the USA saying anything less than a 6, thats just haterism. I can see why those from other countries are harsher being styles in Europe and other countries vary. I get that but, US hate is just wrong, no issue with international voters who have cultural factors that make them see the skyline the way they do.

ssiguy2 June 19th, 2011, 05:25 AM Cleveland is one of those rare skylines where the density isn't really there but it still impresses. The buildings are well spaced that give depth and you notice them because of the incredible uniqueness and beauty of many of it's towers.
Cleveland's skline isn't a great one but it definatly is a classic one.

royal rose1 February 5th, 2012, 07:47 PM It's sad to know that the rust belt cities like Cleveland, Pittsburgh, and Louisville won't grow much larger in our lifetimes. Great skyline though! I'll give it an 8
ssiguy2 March 25th, 2012, 06:56 AM I think many rust-belt cities suchas Cleveland are starting to come back into their own.
The thing that makes them so much more desireable than many newer cities is their interesting neighbourhoods, cultural amenities, and architecture including their skyscrapers. Cleveland exemplifies that as it has one of the most interesting, unique, and visually appealing skylines in the country.

New Yorker25 January 24th, 2013, 04:42 AM 8.5/10 I like it. Could use a bit more density but not bad as it is.

Wow, that picture is so good! Some of the pictures make it look kind of small, but this one really makes it look like a major city!
ssiguy2 January 25th, 2013, 07:11 PM Cleveland doesn't have a lot of tall building but unlike many cities the buildings in has are worth having and for that reason it's a classic.

Cleveland has a nice density in its financial district. That photo was taken from a hotel in the financial district, and there are more buildings going down East 9th, you're looking west from East 12th. Cleveland's Key Tower is in the top 100 in the world, and Terminal Tower was the tallest building in the world outside of New York when it was finished. Because of Cleveland's group plan, you see a big space between their tallest buildings. The group plan consisted of Public Square which is a big park-like transit hub area, and the mall which is a big park, and underneath that park sits the new convention center and medical mart that is being built right now. The group plan wanted this to be a big open space, and it really is a very nice setting, especially the mall with its big open park space and views out over the lakefront and Lake Erie.

Tandax January 27th, 2013, 03:33 PM Has Cleveland skyline changed much in the last 10 years? Looks tired and old and in need of new scrapers. 6/10.

3/10? I have seen some of the other cities you have given much higher scores to, and they don't even have anything equivalent to Key Tower or Terminal Tower in their skyline, let alone the country they are in.
