The actual downtown skyline is pathetic considering the size of the city. The "strip" skyline, if you could even call it that, is not that great. Just a bunch of huge boxy hotel towers, although there are a lot of high rise condos going up that will help. The whole thing looks the best at night, awful during the day. Las Vegas is good for many things but skyline is definitely not one of them. 4/10

Those picture do it NO justice. Sure it's not great compared to some, but if you see some better pictures you'll think it's a little better. And I agree, at night it looks neat. And I don't think it was designed to be a skyline anyway, it's a bunch of hotels and casinos!

^Agreed, especially after the Summit(73 floors, 945 ft.) is
built. I think that edition alone will boost the skyline tremendously.
Las Vegas is the entertainment capital of the U.S. and probably
the world, so there is no need for towering office blocks all over
the place. It moves to the beat of it's own drum regardless of
what other cities may think, which is why it's also one of the fast-
est growing metro. areas around. And if a city is considered 'fake',
what does that say about the people that live/are moving there..
....? Nevermind, don't answer that. Anyway I give it a 7/10 for
mimic architecture.

"Its fake" "its boxy""what a horrible town"

Lemme tell you. horrible towns do not win the award for most visited city in the world.

Not a real city? What dont we have that keeps up from being a real city? We have industry, government, beautiful homes, many commercial districts, and most of all, ENTERTAINMENT. We just hit our centennial two months ago, yet we are still many steps ahead of major citys three or four times our age.

http://hummoff.org/TrailPhotos-F/Exploring03-01/strip.jpg

Oh what are those big ugly dirt blobs? CONSTRUCTION sites! We are the fastest growing metropolis in the world! (four year old pic BTW) Every city needs to grow, ya know...

Tacky, fake hotels? Yeah, you know what? Fuck fake. Lets take a look into reality...

http://www.unichemcoatings.com/grafx/kretchmr.jpg

People come here to escape the trials and tribulations of reality. And i'm totally for detroit, but what the hell, its lost 53'000 people with 5 years, whereas the Valley gains 5000 per month. Las Vegas is home to the most bustling economy in the world, and it goes much farther than gambling. You got electrictians from Baltimore coming by the boatload, 2500+ to work. People come where the work is.

And the neighborhoods in my hometown... who the fuck wants to live in an area such as Delray, Detroit?(http://www.detroitcity.8k.com/delray%20zug%20island%2004.JPG) Some of that shit gotta compare to the Southside Bronx in terms of blight. You won find very much blight in Vegas. Crime, yes. Blight? Hell Naw; Even the ghettos here get Paved roads and completely remodeled every other year.

Oh yes, we got development also...

las vegas is a unique city, whether the subject is the united states or even the world.

i fail to see how las vegas is a fake city. tourism and gambling are the big industries in las vegas, so of course hotels and casinos are going to dominate the skyline. other cities include hotels when discussing their skylines, so why should las vegas be an exception? or is a skyline only commercial headquarters? las vegas is different from new york city, chicago, houston, charlotte, or any other city in the u.s. las vegas is not going to have office towers everywhere if it's not the city that caters to corporations.

each city's skyline is shaped by the dominant industries, whether it be banking, finance, aerospace, insurance, etc. this is also true for las vegas; their industries are gambling and tourism, and the skyline reflects the city's dominance in these industries.

as for anyone who says the skyline lacks height, las vegas has the tallest building west of the mississippi river. there are 4 other structures that are over 500 feet as well.

skyscape07
October 27th, 2005, 03:37 AM
yeah what do u ppl mean when u say its not a real city? just because its main industry is gambling/ tourism? its a major US city, over a million ppl live in the area, ppl work there, gambling is a major business, so what makes it not a city?. define city, and name one thing that makes vegas not a real city... i was gonna vote 6/10 but now i vote 8/ 10 because some ppl dont knw what they are talking about (the skyline isnt that great but i think its alright im really just trying to settle the problem of ppl calling vegas NOt a city)

try visiting it and seeing it for yourself in person

it's one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world and there is far more to it than just gambling

In all fairness Las Vegas is one of the most fun cities in the world. It is an example of why huge skylines tell half the story, or 1/4 the story about the heart of a city. I for one dont think we should judge a city by its skyline. Some of the comments about Las Vegas seem a bit personal and cruel.

Most seem jealous of Las Vegas and are making comments about the city and not the skyline. Being fair I give Las Vegas a 6.5 but, look out in 7-15 years Las Vegas will be one of the largest cities in the U.S if the growth its having continues. We all are adults so we all know Las Vegas was mostly a tourist town.

Its just starting to go after other growth and once it fully goes into finanial and tourist growth combined, the skyscrapers will rival most larger American cities. I visited Las Vegas and let me tell you, there are cities with bigger skylines in the U.S but, there nowhere as fun as Las Vegas.

Lets be fair an adult when judging each others cities. Theres no need for rude and cruel statements!

In a way, it's not a city because the strip is not even in the city limits.

The Stratosphere Tower is the tallest structure west of the Mississippi River.

Of the 20 largest hotels in the world (all in the U.S.), 17 are in Las Vegas, including the 8 biggest. More hotel rooms than any other city on planet Earth, with a 98% occupancy rate all year long. Completely sold out on busy days and there is demand for much, much more.

As land becomes more and more expensive on the strip, they will have to build upward on smaller footprints, which is what the new condo developments are doing. Before the Turnberry project, there was only one tall condo tower in the entire valley. The highrise condo market is just now starting and is set to explode.

Wow, I couldn't agree more with this statement!! Las Vegas is the shit, plus it has the tallest structure in western North America!! :)

Las Vegas doesn't have a really WOW skyline, but the city itself is beyond words...what happens there stays there supposedly :D

Ahh Vegas, my home town. More beautiful at night as said before. Love the pic with the mountains in the background. So much natural beauty around Vegas that nobody cares to see when they visit, still the skyline isn't the best but I give it a 7/10. There's not much height there but since the city's economy is based on entertainment and tourism you can't expect that much.

Las Vegas is an awesome city, on of my favorites but the skyline is weak.

Only a fake NYNY and giant needle in the middle of nowhere. At night, photos down the strip look pretty good and there seems to be a feeling of a skyline but during the day it just looks like a huge Epcot Center. 7.5/10.

Wish there would be a nice commercial downtown made up of skyscrapers not casinos but LV is still a smallish city.

A lil too artificial to me. Unlike other major cities around the world, Las Vegas is lack of culture. History enriches the place and people with the sense of self. I still give it an 8, and it's not a lucky number that everyone should bet on. Be yourself and use your own number. Go go Red!

Gave it an 8.5

It's tacky. It's plastic. But it's Vegas! That's what it's all about. They took the best the world has to offer and made it their own. Some of the buildings are absolute rip-offs of the originals, but others are neat interpretations (Luxor comes to mind). It's the kind of skyline a child would design and because of that, I find it daring, original, and humourous. Plus I love the Stratosphere, as observation towers go, this is the best one I've seen.

las vegas is a unique city, whether the subject is the united states or even the world.

i fail to see how las vegas is a fake city. tourism and gambling are the big industries in las vegas, so of course hotels and casinos are going to dominate the skyline. other cities include hotels when discussing their skylines, so why should las vegas be an exception? or is a skyline only commercial headquarters? las vegas is different from new york city, chicago, houston, charlotte, or any other city in the u.s. las vegas is not going to have office towers everywhere if it's not the city that caters to corporations.

each city's skyline is shaped by the dominant industries, whether it be banking, finance, aerospace, insurance, etc. this is also true for las vegas; their industries are gambling and tourism, and the skyline reflects the city's dominance in these industries.

as for anyone who says the skyline lacks height, las vegas has the tallest building west of the mississippi river. there are 4 other structures that are over 500 feet as well.
Exactly

Hahaha, it is improving and will get better, even the locals are tired of the themed hotels/casinos. Vegas is known as the entertainment capital of the world and not a financial center so you wont be seeing multi-nationals setting their regional hub in Vegas as you would in Los Angeles or New York with their all glass skyscrapers.

Vegas is not really known for its skyline but rather the entertainment value of the city for travellers. From world class production shows, to world class artists from all over the world, add the shopping, nitelife, dining and it is truly a destination. The beautiful desert sceneries are a plus if people wanted to check out nature. As far as the building structures, they are improving and changing. With the current City Center project, it is definitely more interesting at street level. The area is massive and with more retail, dining, nitelife, world class public art, the future of the Vegas Strip is definitely looking better.:)

Just went last week to see my brother get married. Coming into the city from Henderson, the skyline actually looks nice and long, and the hotel/casinos were much taller than I was expecting. I was also surprised by how scenic the surrounding was. Beautiful place with spectacular skyline lighting and unique buildings.

I think its okay, but i think if the towers were more near each other with more variation of heights with these towers then it be a different story.

so for now i will give you a 5/10

8/10. The skyline is great and original especially at night. It's sad SSC seems to attack cities with personality while at the same time glorifying Chinese lookalike cities with perfect 10's. Call me weird but i'd rather have a city of glitz and uniqueness than a city full of Brutalist highrises covered in smog during the day. But that's just my opinion. :)
