View Full Version : Greece agricultural products
GrigorisSokratis January 22nd, 2007, 09:05 AM As you know Greece is a rich country in landscapes and climatic variety making it one of the top destinations not only of Europe but of the world. But usually countries with such a variety have a very rich soil and that's the case of the blessed Greek land putting this country among the top world producers of many agricultural products.
In the following lists I'll show you some of the top products of Greece with figures and comparison tables by country.
Olives and Olive oil:
Greece is the world 3rd producer of Olive oil in the world after Spain and Italy (though part of the Greek crop is exported to Italy, where repackaged for sale abroad as olive oil "made in Italy" thus according to figures this makes Greece the second real world producer). Greece boasts more varieties of olives than any other country. The country holds has more than 132 million trees, which produce approximately 350,000 tons of olive oil annually.
In North America, Italian olive oil is the best-known, but top-quality extra-virgin oils from Spain, Greece, and France (Provence) are sold at high prices and considered of better quality, often in 'prestige' packaging.
About half of the annual Greek olive oil production is exported. Olives are grown for oil in mainland Greece as well as in Crete, the Aegean Islands and Ionian Islands, and the Peloponnese, the latter being the source of 65 percent of Greek production
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Black olives
It is the world's top producer of black olives.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Extra-virgin olive oil
Considered of better quality than the normal; Greece is the world's biggest producer of extra-virgin olive oil (where 75 percent of olive oil produced is extra virgin), topping Italy (where 40-45 percent of olive oil produced is extra virgin) or Spain (where 25-30 percent of olive oil produced is extra virgin).
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Cotton
Greece was the 8th cotton producer of the world last year (though it usually is the 6th producer but due to the floods in the Evros area unfortunately many crops have been lost, hopefully this year it will get back to its normal production getting back to the 6th position) and top producer in the European Union with 2,000,000 tons yearly. Also it's the 3rd cotton producer per capita of the world. It has the 6th largest area of lands under cotton in hectares (it used to have the 5th but in the last few years many of those lands were given for other uses). Most of the cotton produced is exported.

Wine
ATTENTION: Special long study of Greek wines
Greece is the 12th wine producer of the world (used to be 5th back in the old days but in the 80's many of the wine producers changed their interest on tourism activities as the later was in more demand decreasing the production quantity, anyway this tendency has changed and for the last 5 years the wine production in the is increasing putting each year the country in higher levels of production having gone from the 15th place to the current 12th in the last 5 years). Also currently it takes the world 8th place in land area under vines.
Debate exists regarding the number of distinct cultivars varieties inhabiting Greece. Until recently, it was common to hear estimates in excess of 300.
Greek wines are of high quality many times giving quantity in exchange of better quality and lower production. Only in Peloponessos there are 60,000 hectares of vines (as much as the whole of Austria). But it's expected that the real giant with greatest potential is Crete with currently 50,000 hectares and a potential to double that number and triple the production numbers (Crete produces the 20% of the wine of the country).
Another areas famous for their wines are Central Greece, Macedonia, Santorini, Milos, the Ionian Islands, Mykonos, Paros, Rhodes and Samos among other areas.
Attiki in central Greece is known for its famous Retsina variety (Retsina is a wine variety produced only in Greece). Despite in the 60's Retsina became mostly popular in the local market and the most famous Greek wine abroad, in the last decade the other white and red varieties produced in the country took again that title even winning international awards.

kostya January 22nd, 2007, 09:12 AM Very interesting thread, thanks :okay: ! I'd like to know how are Greek wines rated abroad(quality). Is there a list?(Top20 or something.)
neorion January 24th, 2007, 07:04 AM Greek wine never had a high quality reputation because most consumers associated Greek wine with dreadful retsina. The packaging and marketing also left much to be desired. However over recent years it has made significant improvements through production techniques, with many wine-makers being trained at schools in Bordeaux in France, Davis in California and South Australia (yes Australia). New World wine technology has revolutionised wine-making. Amongst others factors they've been able to control the temperature much better during fermentation using stainless steel vats.
Along with a new awareness of Greek varietals, such as xinomavro and agrotiko, improved production and marketing, Greek wine is finally making an impression in this multi-billion dollar industry. The future looks good as long as Greek wine-makers concentrate on high quality and not mass production.

All right, enough for today we'll continue another day with more products.
kostya February 25th, 2007, 09:28 PM Where do you get all this stuff? Amazing! Greece holds some strong positions.
GrigorisSokratis February 26th, 2007, 01:12 AM The UN Agriculture organization.
bolek1 April 11th, 2007, 01:54 AM What about apples, raspberries, strawberries, cherries, potatos, carrots or beetroots?
GrigorisSokratis April 11th, 2007, 02:54 AM Read carefully the list and you will find that Greece is the 12th world cherries producer with 47,708 tons as well as the 4th world producer per capita.
As for Carrots, apples, lettuce etc, I'll add them soon, just let me get rid of some work :) .
gm2263 April 12th, 2007, 12:46 PM Excellent thread, thanks for the info!!!
I live almonds, peanuts and the relevant stuff. A re Grigori nasai kala!!!
Did you mention soya production quotas or was I too lazy to read carefully? My understanding is that Greece is an excellent place for cultivating soya... and Cannabis!!! Don''t get naughty :naughty:, I am refering especially the one used for making clothes, bags, that sort of think...
Don't smoke it, dress with it!!!
Also read the following from Kathimerini newspaper:
Law blurs cannabis distinction (http://www.ekathimerini.com/4dcgi/_w_articles_politics_100016_07/12/2006_77488)
GrigorisSokratis April 12th, 2007, 06:07 PM Thank you for your comments Griogori, and yes indeed Greece has a great potentian of being a soya producer heaven as it has plenty of lands apt for its cultivation.
We should take advantage of the current worldwide soya boom where many countries became from non producers into big soya exporters, thus adding some good additional billions Euros to their treasury boxes.
As for the subproducts of soya they range from milk and cheese to industrial subproducts; so with that in mind I wouldn't doubt if they someday make the healthy version of cannabis smokes out of soya ;)
Sodnal April 14th, 2007, 06:39 AM Anyone mention Mastic, which is terribly popular in Japan and China as gum, beverages and balm:banana: s? Only grown on one Greek island, it's almost worth it's weight in gold.
gm2263 April 14th, 2007, 08:20 PM That will be the Island of Chios.
Sodnal April 15th, 2007, 08:21 AM Yes, Chios. I'm in Japan right now on business and they sell Mastic gum, drinks and so on for exorbitant prices as beneficial for your health. I hope the Chiosans are charging them enough for the stuff!
Sachsenpark April 15th, 2007, 05:01 PM Well gum ist not that expensive, so that anyone can actually afford it. Not big deal :)
GrigorisSokratis April 15th, 2007, 06:48 PM As the info is provided by the United Nations for widely cultivated products and mastic is only done in Greece worldwide and in just ONE place nationwide there is no info about it in their agricultural organization. I'll have to look further for the yearly production of it.
pilotos April 15th, 2007, 07:42 PM As the info is provided by the United Nations for widely cultivated products and mastic is only done in Greece worldwide and in just ONE place nationwide there is no info about it in their agricultural organization. Well at least i guess you wont spend a lot of time to find our position, it will be :
1.Greece, and no one else in the list :)
elgreco_1 April 18th, 2007, 04:51 PM chio's gum is faaaaaaantastic....my doctor said to me(because i have stomach problems, oisofagitida)to chew only chios's gum ....thank God i listened to him....
