Is really an expensive and high class place, or it´s the usual shore house/apartments price over NZ?
Oh that will be fab :colgate: ...... most property is expensive in NZ and The Mount is more expensive than most. You can get cheaper homes further inland but I would rather pay more and be on the beach ;)
I love tauranga, and ya pics :) I wont be going back down there till september now

Aaah thanks 84  ... yeah there is so much to love there. We could quite easily live there, in fact we went house hunting at The Lakes and did some research regarding work - all looks promising but we need to sell our house and it is not so easy in the upper end of the market to sell right now :( We will wait for another 2 years and see if it will be worth moving to The Mount, Queenstown or Australia :colgate: .... my first choice is Queenstown ;) Thanks for the comment ....
P.S. Could you live in The mount ?
Cool, amazing photos once again SYDNEY :)

I am the complete opposite - I have had enough of crowds ... I am all for THE lifestyle now :) ..... apartment living (with the sound of crashing waves), cafes below offering views of the ocean - a fabulous beach full of beautiful, tanned, healthy people, a town centre that feels like a village where everybody knows your name ;) you can ride your bike in peace without cars coming from every direction ... blah, blah, blah ..... you get the picture ;)
Niwascape May 5th, 2010, 08:04 AM Ahhhh you make Tauranga and its surrounds look so inviting, easy beach living, sun-drenched and ....whens the next flight there?! Nice, very very nice!

AUCKLAND[CITY+EVENT]
[RUGBY WORLD CUP 2011] TO BRING 5500 CRUISE SHIP PASSENGERS TO AUCKLAND
http://www.pbase.com/enigma35/image/118343164/original.jpg
The three cruise ships confirmed to berth on Auckland's waterfront during the semi-finals and RWC 2011 Final are the Rhapsody of the Seas, the MS Volendam and the Pacific Dawn. RWC 2011 Auckland spokesperson Michael Barnett says the confirmation of the ships in Auckland is great news for the Auckland economy and will add to the festival atmosphere around Auckland's waterfront. "The ships will be in Auckland for the weekends of the semi-finals and the Final and no doubt the passengers will be bringing their credit cards and looking to get out and about in Auckland," Barnett says. "That's great news for Auckland businesses." Rugby Travel and Hospitality Ltd, managers of the official RWC 2011 travel and hospitality programme, have sourced the three ships. The Rhapsody of the Seas, which will berth at Princes Wharf, has a capacity of 2435. The 1432-passenger MS Volendam will berth at Wynyard Wharf and the Pacific Dawn, with an expected 1590 passengers on board, will be at Queens Wharf. Tourism Auckland CEO and RWC 2011 Auckland Regional Steering Group member Graeme Osborne says Rugby World Cup 2011 will bring a huge influx of visitors to Auckland and the cruise ships will be a special part of that. "Having cruise ships berthed at the bottom of Queen Street is a great fit with our 'City of Sails' reputation and will add hugely to the buzz and vibrancy in Auckland during the event. The ships will provide an important boost to our accommodation capacity during the two busiest weekends of the Tournament," Osborne says. Work to ready Auckland's waterfront for RWC 2011 is already well advanced. The first stage of the Wynyard Quarter development (Jellicoe Street and the public plaza at its western end, as well as a retail and entertainment precinct on North Wharf) will be ready for the Tournament. Work has also begun on the new Viaduct Events Centre on Halsey Street. And plans are being finalised for the use of Queens Wharf during RWC 2011. Barnett says the arrival of the three ships for the Tournament's two biggest weekends will help bring Auckland's waterfront and CBD alive. "There will be a festival atmosphere all the way along Auckland's waterfront and the cruise ships and their passengers will be a big part of that," he says. Osborne says the cruise ships and their passengers will deliver significant benefits for Auckland's tourism sector. "We're already working with tourism operators and other visitor facing businesses to prepare for 2011. The Tournament will deliver a welcome boost to the economy and also reinforce Auckland's reputation as a world class visitor destination."

CITY OF SAILS TO HOST THE [VOLVO OCEAN RACE]
http://www.pbase.com/enigma35/image/109919556/original.jpg
Auckland, New Zealand, is back in the Volvo Ocean Race after a gap of 10 years. The city, which has fielded some of the world’s best sailors in the Volvo Ocean Race, last hosted the event in 2001-02. It will stage the leg four finish from Sanya in China and the start of leg five, which will take the fleet into the Southern Ocean once again, round the infamous Cape Horn and up to a finish in Itajai, Brazil. “It is with the greatest pleasure I can confirm Auckland, New Zealand has won its bid to become a stopover port in the next Volvo Ocean Race. The local people have an immense appreciation of sailing, and the Volvo Ocean Race in particular,” said Volvo Ocean Race CEO, Knut Frostad. “Many of the world’s best-known sailors are from New Zealand, and we are proud to bring the race back to the City of Sails, where we will be sure of a huge reception.” “This announcement completes the route and our goal of contracting all the ports before the end of March 2010, significantly earlier than in previous race cycles. The preliminary course will be published during April,” Frostad added. Auckland Mayor John Banks says he is pleased to see Auckland included as a stopover for this major international event. “This event is a great fit with Auckland’s maritime location and of significant economic benefit for our city,” says Mr Banks. “Auckland has a proud history associated with this event and we look forward to welcoming the fleet and many spectators to our city once again.”

CONSTRUCTION BEGINS ON [VIADUCT EVENTS CENTRE]
http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_adrpDTP_cP8/SgEuHwBk69I/AAAAAAAAAMU/GLEQ4ECwkiI/s1600/MEC%2B6.jpg
Construction on the city's newest waterfront landmark has officially begun, with the ground breaking ceremony for the Viaduct Events Centre held at the Halsey Street wharf construction site. Councillor Greg Moyle, chairperson of the council's Arts, Culture and Recreation Committee, who broke ground at the ceremony, says, "Today, we see a prominent landmark on Auckland's waterfront start to take shape. The Viaduct Events Centre is a critical piece of the big puzzle that encompasses the whole of the city's waterfront." "It is the first project to start construction in the Wynyard Quarter area. This part of the waterfront will soon be a buzz of activity with Gateway Plaza, North Wharf and the interim pedestrian and cycle bridge, all to be completed in the next year or two." Hawkins Construction, which was awarded the contract to build the 6000m2 events centre, officially took over the site at the end of March to prepare for construction. The company is working to a fixed schedule to ensure that the building is complete by July next year. Auckland Mayor John Banks believes that this is a significant project for economic growth in Auckland. "The Viaduct Events Centre will create jobs and generate millions of dollars to the Auckland economy each year from local and international events," says Mr Banks. The multi-purpose facility will offer flexible exhibition, meeting and hospitality space on Auckland's vibrant Viaduct Harbour. Expected to be completed and in use by Rugby World Cup 2011, the facility will offer external public spaces close to the water's edge offering spectacular views of the Waitemata Harbour and the city skyline. Architect Gordon Moller from Moller Architects, says, "I think the Viaduct Events Centre will be a spectacular building within the Viaduct Harbour precinct. The concept for the Viaduct Event Centre on the waterfront is for an elegant glass pavilion opening onto the Halsey St Wharf on all sides to interact with the public promenades and wharf areas." "A lyrical wave form roof over generous display halls and meeting rooms will give a strong maritime feel and suit the wide variety of events and functions that the centre is designed for. All the spaces will also have dramatic views to the waterfront".Further information avaiLable HERE (http://eyeonauckland.blogspot.com/2009/04/about-eye-on-auckland.html)

AUCKLAND STEPS UP BID FOR [CONVENTION CENTRE]
http://www.pbase.com/enigma35/image/122767179/original.jpg
Auckland City Council has stepped up its bid for the city to play home to a national convention and exhibition centre following yesterday’s City Development Committee decision that will see the council submit an official Expression of Interest to the Government. Mayor of Auckland City Hon. John Banks congratulated the Government for taking “this important initiative to the next level” and added that “as the country’s economic capital, the gateway to New Zealand and home to a world-class hospitality and events scene, Auckland’s city centre is the most suitable location for a national convention centre.” To successfully compete for large business events on the world convention circuit a venue must be able to host an average of 3500 delegates, including associated activities such as exhibitions. The study outlines that there will be an estimated annual increase of $85.4 million in tourism-related expenditure as a result of a national convention centre. This does not include the additional benefits to employment and the ability for New Zealand businesses to enhance international relationships. The proposed complex would look to attract new international business and would compliment existing Auckland venues including Sky City who are proposing to expand their conference facility to host up to 2000 delegates. The council has identified five potential locations and will work with the Government to establish a preferred site. The preferred sites outlined in the feasibility study are in the vicinity of The Edge, Sky City land on Hobson Street, the old railway station site on Beach Road and Wynyard Point. Bledisloe Wharf has also been mentioned as a possible location although this is currently unavailable. “We are at a stage in the process where we are placing all the facts on the table as to why Auckland’s CBD is the most suitable location for an international convention centre,” says Mr Banks. The expression of interest will be submitted to the Government in early June.

COUNCIL BOOSTS SUPPORT FOR [FILM INDUSTRY]
http://www.pbase.com/enigma35/image/121525560/original.jpg
Auckland City Council is increasing funding for Film Auckland. "This is about tangibly supporting a local film industry that for years has punched above its weight, providing the means to harness the potential of local talent and maximise the benefits of the city’s unique landscape and climate," says Mayor of Auckland City Hon. John Banks. The funding agreement with Film Auckland will be supported through the council’s discretionary and contestable economic sponsorship budget and is currently allocated for one year. This will give Film Auckland enough time to finalise long-term funding arrangements following the transition to Auckland Council."It is important that we keep up the momentum so that Film Auckland can continue their incredible work of positioning Auckland as an international screen production destination so that Auckland can continue to benefit from the significant economic rewards brought about by this," says Mr Banks.Film Auckland, with support from Auckland City Council, has led the growth of the Auckland screen production industry from $448 million in gross revenue in 2006, to $878 million in 2008. [This does not include associated spending through hospitality, retail and tourism]. In addition, employment within the industry has grown by almost 80 per cent from 1729 in 2006 to 3094 in 2008. Eighty-eight per cent of this growth came directly from the Auckland region. Additional employment opportunities are also created in supporting industries such as hospitality, tourism and the wider creative sector. The council is also close to finalising the Auckland City Council Film Protocol which aims to create a more film friendly city. The final stage of consultation is currently taking place with the film and television industry with the expectation that the protocol becomes active in July.

NEW ZEALAND IS ONE OF THE WORLD'S [LIFESTYLE SUPERPOWERS]
http://www.pbase.com/enigma35/image/121090734/original.jpg
New Zealand is "one of the great lifestyle superpowers of the world" according to the BBC's Sydney correspondent Nick Bryant, who wonders in a post on bbc.co.uk why the rest of the world can't be more like little ol' Aotearoa. Bryant's thoughts, penned following a recent visit to our shores, were prompted by an encounter with "a middle-aged customs official with a sense of humour", the discovery that New Zealand has a 24-hour rugby channel, our "funky" arts scene and the "quaint fastidiousness" which still sees cricket commentators convene on the boundary during the tea break to enjoy - of all things, a pot of tea. He points out too, that New Zealand can be "edgy and forward", citing the fact we were the first country in the world to give women the vote and the impending launch of the "world's most comprehensive emissions trading scheme to curb greenhouse gases". "Best of all, perhaps, is how non-indigenous New Zealanders live in such harmony with their indigenous compatriots," writes Bryant, whose piece is among the most-read articles on bbc.co.uk today. "Next year [New Zealand] hosts the Rugby World Cup," he concludes, "but for now I will leave this country with my usual parting thought: 'Why can't the rest of the world be more like New Zealand?'" Earlier this year, an index compiled by International Living magazine ranked new Zealand as the fifth-best country in the world to live in. The index ranks 194 countries, taking into account cost of living, culture and leisure, economy, environment, freedom, health, infrastructure, safety and risk, and climate. New Zealand's "pristine landscapes", the Auckland waterfront and the Southern Alps were singled out for special mention. Last year's UN Human Development Report, which calculates the well-being of people in 182 countries by taking into account life expectancy, literacy, school enrolment and GDP per capita, ranked New Zealand 20th.

[TOPSHOP] OPENS IN AUCKLAND
http://www.vvillovv.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2006/11/topshop.jpg
Topshop sold out of some ranges before it even opened on Auckland's North Shore. Early bird shoppers booked in for beauty and hair treatments from 7am to make sure they got into The Department Store in Takapuna before the doors opened at 9am. This weekend's opening is only a preview event, and once everything is gone, the doors will close until new stock is delivered on Monday. Only 1000 pieces were delivered to New Zealand after the eruption of Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajokull grounded air traffic and disrupted global freight deliveries. Topshop is rumoured to be scouting for other store locations in Auckland.

FREE BUS + TRAIN RIDES FOR [RUGBY WORLD CUP] TICKET HOLDERS
http://www.pbase.com/enigma35/image/121090792/original.jpg
Rugby World Cup 2011 ticketholders in Auckland will get free rides on public transport to and from matches. Auckland RWC 2011 transport director Bruce Barnard said the move was to save ticketholders the time it would take to buy bus and train tickets. "This in turn means faster movement to and from matches which is the name of our game," Mr Barnard said. The free rides will be available in Auckland three hours before and after matches. Auckland Regional Transport Authority chairman Rabin Rabindran said getting people out of their cars and on to public transport was the best way to move large crowds and keep traffic flowing smoothly. Tournament services general manager Nigel Cass said the offer of free public transport would "really impress our overseas visitors". Organisers said free public transport had played a critical part in the success of other major events worldwide.

[MINI LIFESTYLE STORE] IN AUCKLAND A FIRST FOR AUSTRALASIA
http://classically-british.co.za/media/logos/mini_logo_2.jpg
Carmaker Mini is trialling a new sales concept from a "pop-up" shop in the heart of Ponsonby. The pilot scheme moves away from the traditional caryard to a "Mini Garage" - an open-plan two-storey outlet comprising sales staff, an events area, cafe, and interactive kiosks. It will encourage customers to buy and personalise their cars online and have "Mini mobile agents" to handle inquiries outside of New Zealand's main centres. The aim of the project is to create a more customer-focused retail concept, says Mark Gilbert, managing director of BMW New Zealand. Mini is part of the BMW Group. "This is effectively a 'relaunching' of the Mini brand in New Zealand," said Gilbert. "Gone are the days when we sit and wait for the customer to come to us. "Mini is a lifestyle brand and it needs to reflect today's busy, modern lifestyle." The new outlet is on the corner of Ponsonby Rd and MacKelvie St and will open at the end of the month. Pop-ups are said to be the product of a new high-speed world, shops that spring up, cause a storm and disappear before the fashion crowd moves on to the next big thing. BMW's HQ in Munich chose Auckland ahead of Sydney or Melbourne for the programme. "Things such as this pop-up concept are contested by BMW offices around the world and on this occasion New Zealand won out," Gilbert said. To mark the launch, 15 special-edition models will be available online. "Since the new Mini appeared in 2000, we have seen new models introduced and several new concepts are soon to arrive," Gilbert said. "The time is right for Mini to break out of the confines of the traditional car dealership and have a home of its own."

AUCKLAND'S [THE DEPARTMENT STORE] CHOSEN AS THE WORLD'S BEST NEW RETAIL STORE
http://www.pbase.com/enigma35/image/124751700/original.jpg
International bible of Cool, Monocle magazine, has chosen Auckland's The Department Store as its #1 pick of the hottest 25 new retailers on the planet! The accolade features in Monocle's April 2010 issue which headlines with 'The Art of the Sell: The World's Best Shopkeeping and Retail Stars.' The London-based magazine, edited by Tyler Brule´ (founder of style pace-setter, Wallpaper*), sent fashion correspondent Tom Morris to New Zealand in January this year to scour the country's newest and best trends, pop-culture, art, and retail. As a result of Morris's trip, not only did The Department Store end up #1 on Monocle's list of global hit-makers, but the store will also feature in Monocle's online films comprising its Top 5 picks in the retail category. The Department Store opened in October 2009 with three major businesses: Karen Walker, Black Box and Stephen Marr. Lighting, object and furniture designer Simon James also occupies part of the ground floor with curio's specialists, Flotsam & Jetsam, and the top floor hosts new art exhibitions on a 3-month rotation. It's an incredible achievement for The Department Store, and is testament to the talent we have in New Zealand and the belief in what Monocle described as the store's 'vernacular' of celebrating local business. If you haven't already been to The Department Store, you need to go NOW! We have the world's best store on our doorstep, so get discovering! www.thedepartmentstore.co.nz

NEW [MOUNTAIN BIKE] TRACKS OPEN IN THE CITY
http://www.pbase.com/enigma35/image/121881131/original.jpg
Mountain bike riders have two new tracks in the heart of the city with the completion of the Arch Hill Scenic Reserve mountain bike trails. The two tracks - 'Training Wheels' for the whole family and 'Twist and Shout' for more advanced riders - will officially open this Sunday, 30 May. The increasing popularity of mountain biking led to the building of the dedicated facility within the city. The council has worked in partnership with the Auckland Mountain Bike Club on the design and development of the trail to ensure it meets the needs of both beginners and advanced riders. Councillor Greg Moyle, chairperson of the Arts, Culture and Recreation Committee, says: "The development of the Arch Hill Scenic Reserve mountain bike trail provides the local community and keen mountain bikers across the city with opportunities for off-road cycling. "We're pleased to have worked with Auckland Mountain Bike Club to provide this excellent opportunity for mountain bikers in the city and to make sure it meets everyone's requirements. "The trails will revive an underused park for the benefit of families and mountain bike enthusiasts alike and I hope we see plenty of cyclists using the new facility over the winter months." "This is a growing sport in Auckland and around the world so it's good to see the council has built a track that's accessible right in the heart of the city."

AUCKLAND 4th BEST CITY IN THE WORLD FOR [QUALITY OF LIFE]
http://www.pbase.com/enigma35/image/121708625/original.jpg
Auckland has the world's fourth-best quality of living, according to a new ranking dominated by European cities. But in another ranking for eco-cities, Wellington beats out Auckland, ranking fifth worldwide. In both categories, New Zealand cities sit at the top of the Asia Pacific, ahead of Australian contenders. The 2010 Mercer Worldwide Quality of Living Survey was released today, ranking cities for overall quality of living based on political, socio-economic and environmental criteria as well as sanitisation, education and transport. The company also compiled a list of top eco-cities. Spokeswoman Georgina Harley said in a statement to media that New Zealand cities had been recognised for having "quality housing close to the city", "political stability" and "transport". Ms Harley also praised New Zealand cities' "wide selection of restaurants". Auckland ranked fourth while Wellington was judged 12th worldwide for quality of living. Among eco-cities, Wellington was fifth while Auckland was deemed 13th. Baghdad, Iraq, was judged to have the worst quality of living among surveyed cities, while Port-au-Prince, Haiti, ranked at the bottom of the eco-city rankings. The rankings are compiled to help businesses determine "hardship" allowances for employees abroad, based on the quality of life of the cities they live in. Mercer senior researcher Slagin Parakatil said cities no longer had to be in near economic powerhouses to attract business. "As the world economy becomes more globalised, cities beyond the traditional financial centres are emerging as attractive places in which to expand or establish a business," Mr Parakatil said. An eco-city optimised its use of renewable energy sources and generated the lowest possible quantity of pollution, he said.

http://www.pbase.com/enigma35/image/122767181/original.jpg
Auckland is taking its supercity title literally, while Northland is struggling on most fronts, a scoreboard measuring economic performance during the last quarter shows. The ASB/Main Report Regional Economic Scoreboard lists Auckland as the most confident of the 16 regional council areas, with gains in house prices and growth in retail sales among the strongest in the country. The report, which uses measures including employment, construction, retail trade and house prices, gives the city a three star rating out of a possible five stars - with five being hot and one being not. Growth was also reported in car registrations, while residential construction and non-residential activity was picking up.

SIR PETER JACKSON MAY STEP IN AND DIRECT [THE HOBBIT]
http://www.pbase.com/enigma35/image/52808955.jpg
Sir Peter Jackson says he will consider directing The Hobbit if it is the only way to save the movie's production after the shock resignation of director Guillermo del Toro yesterday. Del Toro said the decision to quit the The Lord of the Rings prequel was "the hardest decision" he'd ever made but repeated delays were affecting his commitments to other films. "It was more a factor of the other commitments asking for a start [time] than The Hobbit needing a date to start," he told the Dominion Post. Del Toro was hired in 2008, when the goal was for part one of The Hobbit to be released this year. Now the earliest likely release date is 2012. MGM co-owns the rights to a feature film version of The Hobbit with New Line Cinema - the studio that made the LOTR trilogy - but MGM has been put up for sale with a reported US$3.7 billion in debt and potential for assets, such as the franchise on the James Bond movies, or the Pink Panther to be sold off piecemeal. Jackson told the newspaper he was saddened by del Toro's departure, which was "amicable". Del Toro would continue as a Hobbit screenwriter. Jackson met studio representatives yesterday to begin the search for a new director for the US$150 million (NZ$219m) film, but wouldn't rule out directing The Hobbit himself if a suitable person could not be found. But stepping in as director would be difficult as he had signed writer and director contracts with Hollywood studios for two other films, with one likely to begin next year. "The other studios may not let me out of the contracts." Jackson said November was now the earliest start date for shooting, but it depended on finding the right director. "We don't intend to let this affect the progress. Everybody, including the studio, wants to see things carry on as per normal. The idea is to make it as smooth a transition as we can."

$1 MILLION DOLLAR PLUS [STREETS] ON THE INCREASE
http://www.pbase.com/enigma35/image/119833224/original.jpg
The New Zealand Monopoly Board has a new Mayfair: Cremorne St in Auckland's Herne Bay is the country's most expensive street. But the prestige of living on Millionaires' Lane might be losing its shine as figures show the number of streets where the average home is worth $1 million or more is on the up. There are now 535 streets in New Zealand where the houses have a median value of $1m or more - and they are not necessarily in the avenued Remueras or the leafy Parnells of the nation. Auckland City has 230 streets on the list: one in every 13. Nationwide, the figure is fewer than one in 100 streets. Cremorne St, on the Waitemata waterfront, has a median house value of $5.6m, according to figures provided by QV. Jonno Ingerson, research director at qv.co.nz, estimates that five years ago there were only 352 streets in the million-dollar category, and 10 years ago, as few as 15 such streets nationwide. New Zealand's top 20 streets were all in the Auckland region except for Malaghans Ridge in Queenstown, which houses the exclusive Millbrook Resort. Paritai Drive, touted as one of New Zealand's most expensive streets, came in at 67th nationwide. Ingerson said the high number of streets was initially surprising: "The majority of them are in highly sought after areas of Auckland City and North Shore, such as the streets near to the coast on the North Shore, and the streets overlooking the Hauraki Gulf in Orakei, Parnell and Remuera." "Similarly in the other areas it tends to be streets either on or near the coast or with impressive views, and typically very close to the city. In some of the smaller centres it is streets with large, high value houses or holiday homes."

[TRAMS] TO REAPPEAR ON AUCKLAND STREETS
http://www.pbase.com/enigma35/image/120255625.jpg
Trams are being prepared for a comeback on Auckland's waterfront, in time for next year's Rugby World Cup. More than 50 years since trams disappeared from city streets, the Auckland Regional Council has approved the first stage of a proposal which could ultimately be part of the region's wider public transport network. The initial stage will focus on the Tank Farm redevelopment by ARC group subsidiary Sea+City, which will receive $6.3 million to $7.4 million from Auckland Regional Holdings to develop a 1.5km tram circuit by July next year. Future developments, such as an extension to Britomart across a future Viaduct Harbour bridge, will be left to the new Super City council. Sea+City expects to initially use two heritage trams from the Museum of Transport and Technology (Motat), although the regional council is also discussing with Victorian state government officials a possible long-term loan of some Melbourne trams as the service grows. It wants Sea+City to work with Motat on the technical aspects of tramway construction and management, in view of the museum's expertise in running its own 1.9km tram circuit at Western Springs which attracts about 200,000 passengers a year. The waterfront trams - travelling clockwise between Jellicoe, Halsey, Gaunt and Beaumont Sts - are likely to be converted to battery-powered drives to avoid a need for overhead powerlines which could hamper trucks carrying boats with masts. A regional council report also pointed to potential opposition to overhead lines from the bulk liquid fuels industry, which will remain at Wynyard Wharf for a few more years and which could be concerned at the possibility of electrical arcing in the event of traffic accidents. Sea+City chief executive John Dalzell said the trams would be charged overnight at sidings at the western end of Jellicoe St, although they would gain some recharging during daily operations through harnessing some of their own momentum. Mr Dalzell said Jellicoe St was already being dug up to make it a pedestrian-oriented boulevard, so tram tracks would be laid as part of that project. He acknowledged the timetable would be tight for introducing the trams by next winter, but said Sea+City was geared up for action as it had already begun $275 million of re-development for Wynyard Quarter. Regional council chairman Mike Lee said the sidings would be in buildings next to the proposed Silo Park, which was being designed to attract people to the far end of Jellicoe St. He called the removal of trams from the streets in 1956 a "terrible mistake" which he hoped could be rectified and said he was pleased by Sea+City's enthusiasm for the project. The focus would be on carrying visitors around Wynyard Quarter in heritage trams but he expected that as the area became more developed with businesses and apartments, demand would grow for modern light rail vehicles to cater for commuters.

BID LODGED FOR AN [INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION CENTRE] & GOLDEN MILE
http://www.pbase.com/enigma35/image/121525431/original.jpg
An iwi is leading a consortium to develop an international convention centre which it says would turn a derelict area of the city into one point of an Auckland destination anchor. The Government has called for expressions of interest for a new centre so New Zealand could take a bigger share of a lucrative market, which could draw 22,000 extra visitors a year. Ngati Whatua o Orakei Maori Trust Board won't say who its partners are but it wants to develop the old railway yards behind Quay St's Vector Arena. The tribe currently leases the land to Auckland City Council, but chief executive Tiwana Tibble says its proposal would "rejuvenate" an ugly site it had been asking the council to develop for years. The development includes a centre with 29,000sq m of exhibition space, a possible railway station, an underground carpark, and boulevard access from The Strand. "We see it as a golden mile. The vision should be that it leads to the development of the whole of Quay Street. We're an anchor site. The two points of the bottom of the anchor are the Viaduct and us, with Queen Street as the middle." With the Auckland Regional Council bringing back trams to the Tank Farm in time for the Rugby World Cup, there was also no reason a line connecting the two couldn't be paid for by the developers. That would move tourists around the city sharing out economic benefits, he said. The Auckland City Council and SkyCity are also in the race.

[ROCKY HORROR] CREATOR WANTS NEW ZEALAND CITIZENSHIP
http://www.pbase.com/enigma35/image/112107246.jpg
The Kiwi-raised creator of The Rocky Horror Picture Show has made an emotional plea to be allowed to return to New Zealand to die. Richard O'Brien migrated here in 1952 when he was 10 and grew up in Tauranga and Hamilton, where he got the idea for the cult musical. He owns land in Katikati in the Bay of Plenty, but lives in London and doesn't meet New Zealand citizenship criteria. The 68-year-old and his immigration adviser Dion Smart are appealing to Immigration Minister Jonathan Coleman to make an exception. "I just want to die in New Zealand. It's my home; it always has been and it always will be," says O'Brien. "[New Zealand] has always given me a great deal of strength and comfort and I have my brother and sister and more family there. It's just home." O'Brien's siblings, Robin Smith and Gillian Page, live in Tauranga, as did his late parents. Smart says O'Brien doesn't fit the criteria for one of his family members to sponsor him. "... So we're going to be asking the minister to grant an exception to the policy because he is who he is." A statue of Riff-Raff (above), O'Brien's character from The Rocky Horror Picture Show, was put up in 2004 on the site of the Hamilton barber shop where he worked and got the idea for the film.

NEW ZEALAND IS THE WORLD'S MOST [PEACEFUL COUNTRY]
http://farm1.static.flickr.com/22/31917125_cbfd47db5d_b.jpg
New Zealand is listed as the world's most peaceful country in the 2010 Global Peace Index for the 2nd year running. The global financial crisis had made the world less peaceful by fuelling crime and civil unrest, the worldwide study said yesterday, but the risk of outright armed conflict appeared to be falling. New Zealand was said to be the most peaceful country, followed by Iceland and Japan. The index - which examines several dozen indicators from the crime rate to defence spending, conflicts with neighbouring states and respect for human rights - showed an overall reduction in the level of peacefulness. "We have seen what looks like a direct impact from the [financial] crisis," Steve Killelea, the Australian entrepreneur behind the index, told Reuters. Minimising the impact could mean ensuring any economic pain was equitably shared across society to maintain social cohesion, he said. Ethiopia topped the list of "most improved" countries in 2010 while the world's least peaceful countries were listed as Iraq, Somalia, Afghanistan and Sudan. The worst performing region since 2007 has been South Asia, with conflict in Sri Lanka, Pakistan and India hitting ratings. The United States accounted for 54 per cent of global military spending, Mr Killelea said, with its conflicts in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere a potentially damaging distraction. The index is compiled by the Institute for Economics and Peace based on data from the Economist Intelligence Unit. It estimates violence costs the global economy $10.5 trillion a year.

No worries mate, you are most welcome, I hope that you had a gr8 day :colgate: .... yes, people are very trusting here (maybe too trusting) but it makes little NZ a special place to be.
They once had a hidden camera at a "honesty box" and 1 person took fruit without paying and another took money - 98% of the people paid for the fruit - really amazing.

CITY STREETS TO GET [FRUIT TREES]
http://whats4dinnersolutions.files.wordpress.com/2009/11/apples-ca.jpg
Imagine walking down the road and grabbing an apple along the way, or walking through a park and catching nuts as they fall from trees. Aucklanders might not have to use their imagination for much longer if a new trial which involves planting fruit trees on council-owned land proves a success. More than 170 fruit and nut trees will soon be planted along streets and walkways and in city parks as part of an Auckland City Council trial. The Eden-Albert and Tamaki community boards are spear-heading the initiative that will see 44 fruit trees planted around Otahuhu streets and 131 trees brighten up roads, walkways and 10 parks in the Eden-Albert ward. A final report on the success of the trial, which aims for community involvement, is scheduled for June next year and will form the basis of a fruit tree planting policy. Avocados, guavas, mandarins and walnut trees, among others, will be planted around streets and parks, including Anderson Park in Mt Albert and Potters Park in Mt Eden. Tamaki Community Board chairwoman Kate Sutton says the trees will not only provide food to the public, but will also get them thinking about where the food they eat comes from and about the impact imported food and packaging has on the environment. Ms Sutton says the Otahuhu Steering Group brought the idea to her and the community's attention and most people are interested in seeing it develop. She says there has been a growth in private and community gardens and this initiative is an expansion of the idea that you can play a part in creating the food you eat. "Simple ideas are sometimes the best," says the Onehunga resident, who has fig trees, feijoas and passionfruit growing in her backyard. "During times of recession it's a good opportunity to think outside the square and why not have trees that beautify our streets and feed the people?" The council says that prices for fresh produce will increase in the future, making self-sustainable food sources more important, especially for low-income earners. The streets the trees will go on are yet to be decided but they are planned to be planted around primary schools. The Eden-Albert Community Board has contributed more than $40,000 towards planting. Fruit and nut trees are to be planted at the following parks: Taylor Park, Morvern Reserve, Watling Reserve, Melville Park, Bellevue Reserve, Windmill Reserve, Anderson Park, Braemar Reserve, Potters Park and Nicholson Park.

AUCKLAND'S TRANSFORMATION BEGINS WITH [SHARED SPACES]
TJpzOVYMOCY
As of June 2010, many of Auckland's downtown city streets are going to be ripped up one by one and transformed into shared spaces. Elliott Street is the first, followed by Fort Street, Darby Street and Lorne Street. Federal Street is the latest area to be thrown into the bag and will transform that part of town into an entertainment district. Downtown Auckland will never be the same again.

They stole the money from somewhere  ... I have no idea because the rates and taxes are quite low, we haven't had any major increases at all - maybe they have been frugal in other areas and they have been building a nest egg

TAKAPUNA'S [CENTRE OF SAILING]
http://static.stuff.co.nz/1276742944/975/3823975.jpg
THE North Shore will now officially be the home of New Zealand sailing with the establishment of the National Ocean Water Sports Centre at Takapuna Beach. The $8 million facility will sit adjacent to the Takapuna Boating Club. The purpose-built centre is a satellite sister site to the Millennium Institute under the government's funding injection for high performance sport. It will be funded by $3m contributions from both the government and North Shore City Council. The balance will be raised by the sporting community. The building, already known as The Bunker, will not only be the new home of the Yachting New Zealand offices and high-performance sailing, it will be a hub for other water sports including triathlon and ocean kayaking. Sports Minister Murray McCully says: "Athletes will receive specialist training, while having ready access to the nearby National Training Centre's world-class fitness training, sports medicine and sports science work." Yachting New Zealand chief executive Des Brennan is thrilled with the centre that will have below-ground bunker storage for boats, windsurfers, paddleboards, surfskis, waka and kayaks, and an above-ground glass pavilion will include changing rooms and high-performance coaching facilities and space for spectators. The Takapuna Boating Club and beach area has been the venue for 14 world sailing championships since the 1970s and was the venue for the 2008 World Championships and the Olympic Qualification regatta for four Olympic classes. Just under half of the recently announced 23member New Zealand sailing team is linked to the North Shore. In the women's match racing, from the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron and Murrays Bay Sailing Club, is 20-year-old Susannah Pyatt, a former Yachting New Zealand Young Sailor of the Year. Mr McCully says he supports stage two of the project that that could see a wharf built.

A NEW ENTRY FOR [AUCKLAND'S CONVENTION CENTRE] BID
http://www.pbase.com/enigma35/image/122767179/original.jpg
The ASB Showgrounds wants to develop a $229 million convention and exhibition centre on mostly vacant land at Greenlane. Showgrounds chief executive Mark Frankham said a 5500-seat centre could rise on the northern side of the site, alongside the expanded exhibition halls, on which $30 million has been spent. The showgrounds bid was the cheapest submitted to the Government from Auckland businesses and construction was ready to start almost immediately, he said. The Auckland City Council said the most expensive option was a $550 million national convention centre on the waterfront on a redeveloped wharf. But he acknowledged all the other pitches had come from CBD locations. Conventions catering for up to about 22,000 people annually aimed to showcase the central city and waterfront. To resolve Greenlane's accommodation problem, Mr Frankham said, a four-level 450-room $100 million hotel could be built alongside the new centre and that was part of the showground's proposal designed by architects Archimedia. "Greenlane most certainly has some strengths, particularly the fact that it has land available and is closer to the airport, which it believes are good selling points. "The council wants to bring an international convention centre to Auckland but we took an agnostic view on the location." SkyCity wants to develop at 101 Hobson St opposite its casino, Ngati Whatua o Orakei Maori Trust Board on land near Vector Arena and The Edge alongside Aotea Centre. Waterfront proposals for Wynyard Point and Bledisloe Wharf might also have been submitted. The Contenders are; $550m on rebuilt wharf, $477m on land and water, $405m on a wharf, $383m at Wynyard Pt, $329m at Midtown, CBD, $229m at ASB Showgrounds.

AUCKLAND SECURES THE 2012 [TRIATHLON CHAMPIONSHIP]
http://i.telegraph.co.uk/telegraph/multimedia/archive/01613/docherty1_1613816c.jpg
The biggest international triathlon event outside of the Olympics is coming to Auckland city. The grand final of the 2012 Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship Series has been secured by New Zealand. Triathlon New Zealand was informed early this week of its successful bid by the International Triathlon Union (ITU). New Zealand was chosen above other countries including those from Asia, the Middle East and Europe. Triathlon New Zealand has partnered with Auckland City Council and government to make the event possible. It will take place over four days (18-22 October 2012) and be based at Queens Wharf in the city centre. The grand final is the most prestigious event of the eight-race world championship series and is expected to attract a host of international stars, as well as thousands of global visitors. Hosting the event will be a huge boost for the profile of Auckland and New Zealand, with an estimated global TV audience in excess of 13 million and financial benefits for New Zealand estimated at $30 million. "This is yet another successful major event bid for Auckland. After Rugby World Cup 2011, we can now look forward to hosting the Triathlon World Championships and Volvo Ocean Race in 2012, followed by the BMX World Championships in 2013," says Mayor of Auckland city, Hon. John Banks. Triathlon New Zealand CEO, Dave Beeche adds, "This is recognition of our standing in the world of triathlon. The ITU is entrusting New Zealand with the biggest triathlon event on the calendar outside the Olympics. This is both a huge honour and responsibility, but one we and our event partners are looking forward to."

THE [BIG DIG] IS ALL DONE
http://static.stuff.co.nz/1278892386/686/3909686.jpg
Happiness is a great big hole in the ground for KiwiRail project manager Paul Crawford. The trench 300 metres long by seven deep and up to 18 metres wide is the result of a year's work on the $42 million Manukau rail link. And now comes the best part of the job – seeing the concrete slab poured as the base for the twin platforms for the new Manukau train station. "It's been a long time coming," he says. "The excavation has been a mammoth task." It's taken three months to dig out more than 30,000 cubic metres of silt from the trench running from Davies Ave to just beyond the Lambie Drive bridge. Mr Crawford says the 500mm thick base slab is being poured in "patchwork" sections to allow for shrinkage when the concrete's cured. "Once all the slabs have cured and shrunk, we'll put in expansive concrete to push it out towards the walls," he says. The base slab is held in place by 158 tension piles driven from the surface deep into the Waitemata sandstone. "It's to stop it lifting because we're four metres below the water table here." A few cylinders of concrete jumbled on the trench floor are remnants of the tension piles, lopped off during the excavation. Contractors are now preparing areas for escalators, lifts and stairs up to the Davies Ave bus interchange which will also lead into Manukau Institute of Technology's planned tertiary campus. The next stage will be covering the secant pile walls with 180 pre-cast, six-metre-high panels of honed concrete. "They will be polished and it will look nice," Mr Crawford says. The panels will cover the damp patches on the walls, evidence of the "minimal seepage" from the surrounding water table which will be drained into a tank near the Lambie Drive bridge. The 250 cubic metre tank is still being built and will cope with a one in 100-year storm, he says. Soon contractors will start work on the walls for the pair of 160-metre platforms, then on the platforms them-selves. "By the end of September we should have finished the civil works to the stage where the platforms are back-filled," Mr Crawford says. In October KiwiRail will fill the trench with ballast and start laying the 2km of tracks out to the southern line. The Auckland Regional Transport Authority will surface the platforms and hang canopies from the capping beams to protect travellers from the weather. In February work is due to start on the bus interchange building, a joint venture between the regional transport authority and Manukau City Council. About 600,000 train passengers each year are expected to use the rail station when it opens next year. About 1.2 million people are expected to use the bus interchange each year.

ARTISTS TO LIGHT UP [BLEDISLOE WALKWAY]
http://www.pbase.com/enigma35/image/121881139/original.jpg
A series of luxurious images by renowned Auckland artist Richard Orjis will be the first to grace the Bledisloe Walkway light boxes – an exciting new exhibition space in the heart of Auckland city. From 17 July 2010, a series of light boxes in the Bledisloe Walkway, which runs between Aotea Square and Wellesley Street, will provide artists with a unique outdoor space to display contemporary artwork. The first of three proposed sets of public art light boxes planned for Auckland’s CBD, the Bledisloe Walkway light boxes will house approximately four, three-month exhibitions each year featuring the work of individual artists and curated group exhibitions. Park by Richard Orjis features a series of five photographs, which depict an opulent fantasy world. One image shows jewel-encrusted robots seated majestically in a bed; other images suggest an artificial garden teeming with spring flowers, rising dough and plastic bones, and dotted with candles. “Orjis conjures up a world where nature looks beautiful, pure and intrinsically good, but at the same time appears dangerous, decadent and destructive,” says Auckland City Council, manager public art Rob Garrett. The light box programme will meet two of the council’s key expectations for public art by “creating richness” through the diversity of artists’ expressions and stories over time; and “generating surprise” through exhibitions that will surprise, delight and challenge over time.

NEW [CHINATOWN] TAKING SHAPE IN MANUKAU
http://www.pbase.com/enigma35/image/122311481/original.jpg
There has been a strong response from Manukau City’s Chinese community to a new Chinatown complex that is to be established on a high profile site in Ti Rakau Drive in East Tamaki. Wyatt says around 40 per cent of the complex’s space has already been taken up within the first month of marketing by a variety of predominantly Chinese retailers, food operators and other traders. The Chinatown enterprise is being spearheaded by two prominent local Chinese businessmen Jack Ren and Crown Xu. Ren is the principal of the Wanfang Group which has a turnover in excess of $20 million and was established 12 years ago as a specialist souvenir business to cater for the growing Asian market in New Zealand. Crown Xu owned a residential housing design and build company and has also established seven cafes under the Crown brand. He was involved in the grand opening committee of the Auckland Oriental Markets which were formerly located in Quay Street in the CBD before that area underwent redevelopment. Xu says the Manukau Chinatown is being modelled on other successful Chinatowns around the world, and will not only provide for commercial and leisure activities, but will also become a focal point for community and cultural activities. He says the complex will be open seven days a week and will also have a vibrant night market, where music and artistic performances will play a central role and which will provide a safe environment for families and young people to dine and be entertained. Xu says the Chinatown complex will provide an alternative shopping environment that is not available anywhere else in the region and prices will be open to bartering as is common practice in these types of markets internationally. Redevelopment work on the former giant hardware store is underway following the granting of resource consent and Chinatown is scheduled to open for business in October.

WORK TO START ON [QUEENS' WHARF] IN TIME FOR THE RUGBY WORLD CUP 2011
http://www.pbase.com/enigma35/image/121540542/original.jpg
The Auckland Regional Council (ARC) and the Government have agreed on how Queens Wharf will be developed. “After a long and sometimes difficult debate I am very pleased that the ARC and the Government have reached a robust and sustainable agreement on the development of Queens Wharf,” says Michael Lee, Chairman of the ARC. “We have reached a pragmatic and creative solution that delivers an outstanding harbourside fan zone for the Rugby World Cup, embraces the wharf’s heritage and preserves the broadest possible options and legacy for the future.” The agreement between the Government and the ARC confirms Queens Wharf as the Rugby World Cup fan zone in a plan which includes both Shed 10 and the temporary “cloud” structure. Under the agreement Shed 11 will be dismantled and moved off site, and the “cloud” building located in its place on the western side of the wharf. Shed 10 will be retained with some works undertaken to ensure that it is safe, secure and visually in keeping with the fan zone for next year’s Rugby World Cup. This work will respect the heritage values of the shed. The ARC purchased Queens Wharf to provide a permanent cruise ship terminal and public open space in the heart of Auckland’s waterfront. “This agreement means that after the Rugby World Cup the new Auckland Council and its Waterfront Development Agency will be able to make considered decisions on how to achieve these long term objectives within a vision for Auckland and the whole of the waterfront,” says Mr Lee.

AUCKLAND ON IT'S WAY TO BECOMING A [SUPER CITY]
http://www.pbase.com/enigma35/image/124125349/original.jpg
A website for the new Auckland Council has gone live. The page at www.aucklandcouncil.govt.nz carries information relating to the upcoming local body elections, as well as customer service details and frequently asked questions. The changes to Auckland governance are substantial and the new website will provide the definitive resource for residents and ratepayers. Features include a street-find application allowing people to search their addresses to locate which new ward or board area they live in. It also contains sections on the roles and responsibilities of the mayor, councillors and local boards, information on council-controlled organisations and news. More content will be progressively loaded between now and November 1, when the Auckland Council will come into being. Mark Ford is the executive chairman of the Auckland Transition Agency, which is charged with planning and managing the amalgamation of the existing local, district and regional councils. "The people of Auckland will be able to interact with the new Auckland Council easily through many more channels, including online and face to face," he says. Other initiatives for provide improved access include a network of service centres across the region, and an agreement with the Bank of New Zealand and PostShop to provide online and over-the-counter transactions.

SEASON 2 OF [SPARTACUS: BLOOD & SAND] TO BE FILMED IN AUCKLAND
m2CqtNeRK_w
Series 1 of the tv series, "Spartacus: Blood and Sand" was filmed in Auckland and other locations throughout New Zealand. Receiving rave revues, Starz announced on May 11 2010, that it is developing a six-episode prequel to Spartacus: Blood and Sand. The prequel will feature new and returning stars, headlining the roles of John Hannah as Batiatus, and Lucy Lawless as Lucretia. Star Andy Whitfield will also briefly appear. Production begins in New Zealand in the summer of 2010 and the prequel will air beginning January 2011. A lot of people compare "Spartacus: Blood and Sand" to "Rome", however the 2 have nothing in common. While "Rome" is a drama about politics and conspiracies, "Spartacus" is one man's journey. The series is inspired by the story of the gladiator Spartacus, who led the gladiators rebellion and who died in their last stand in southern Italy. The 2 inspiration points for the series are clearly "Gladiator", for the concept, a man fighting for something and using the crowd of the arena to achieve his goal, and "300" for the special effects. In the first 2 episodes it was more about fights and sex scenes, things change in the third episode and becomes more focused on the character. The show feels different from anything at the moment and could easily become one of the best shows around.

RENEWAL CLOSER FOR [VICTORIA PARK MARKET]
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3552/3357240524_547b8e6a0f_b.jpgby kiwiFR
The ink is almost dry on a deal to finally revamp Auckland's tired Victoria Park Market. Eighty operators will move into the new-look market, which will include a restaurant and nightclub zone off Drake St and a retail precinct at the Victoria St level. Restaurants will include Mexican eatery the Flying Burrito Brothers, an Argentinian steak house, a New York-style tapas bar and a Japanese restaurant. A German brewery is also interested. All the restaurants and bars will have outdoor areas. Auckland radio station Big FM is to take up residence in a space with a stage for live performances. The heritage walk of famous New Zealanders will be resurrected, and it will also feature a small museum. The $25 million redevelopment will take nine months and will begin late August. Designers from Perth, Melbourne and Sydney were moving into the market. "Everything down here is going to be destination - that's our point of difference. We're not making them a mall." With Telecom and later ASB moving into the area, the development would have three target markets - staff working for nearby corporates, tourists, and local residents, Prenter said.

AUCKLAND'S LATEST ART TRAILS - [MICRO SITES]
http://www.pbase.com/enigma35/image/122768864/original.jpg
Expect the unexpected with Auckland's newest public art trail, Micro Sites, located in the Learning Quarter. A flashing keyhole, an abandoned trapeze and a miniature temple are just some of the exciting new contemporary art works that have been installed in and around the city centre's busy Learning Quarter. The works are part of a public art project launched yesterday entitled Micro Sites, which is an Auckland City Council initiative developed in partnership with The University of Auckland and AUT University. The series of discrete temporary art works will be surprising discoveries for people living, working and walking through Auckland's Learning Quarter. "The works are unlabelled and intended to be chanced upon," says Councillor Greg Moyle, chairperson of the Arts, Culture and Recreation Committee. "This project is an opportunity for artists to create small-scale art works that run against the grain and interfere with everyday perceptions of a place," he adds. The installations are designed as medium-term projects with a lifespan of up to five years. Visit the Public Art (http://www.aucklandcity.govt.nz/whatson/arts/publicart/docs/microsites.pdf) section for a downloadable map of the locations of the art works.

Love this art.
Nicco July 30th, 2010, 08:19 AM Hey Sydney,
Nice photos as always. Regarding the 'artworks', they look ridiculous. Hardly any of them are even noticeable. If the city council really believes that more public art is needed to bring the Learning Quarter to life, then why not install something that makes you go WOW!! I wonder if anyone from the Public art panel has ever been to Melbourne.
Who the hell would EVER notice the 'super swing' hanging from the Albert Park pedestrian bridge? Most of the artworks are so small and insignificant that its just a waste of money. The footpaths on Symonds Street above the Wellesley Street motorway onramps are screaming for something outrageous, yet we get these ugly looking bus shelters.
I suppose public art in Auckland is either about installing more and more light boxes or some random 'thing' that no one will ever look at. :ohno:

Hey sweety :) Thanks :colgate: ... the installations are meant to be "hidden", it is like a treasure hunt, so while you are doing your walk about you will just by chance happen to come upon them. It is a start and will get the name of students out there :) expect to see more permanent art installations soon - once all the street upgrades/public squares are complete ... right now everything is a construction site and it is about to get worse.
This game of wait and see is very frustrating and I can't wait for the big reveal - all very exciting  Thanks for popping in .....

[QUEEN'S WHARF] BACK ON TRACK
http://www.pbase.com/enigma35/image/124125648.jpg
"Party Central" is back on track for Queen's Wharf in downtown Auckland after the Government and the Auckland Regional Council (ARC) settled their difference over two old cargo sheds. Rugby World Cup Minister Murray McCully announced today one of the 98-year-old sheds would be demolished, one would be kept and upgraded, and a new temporary "cloud" structure would be built for rugby fans to party in during the Rugby World Cup next year. Under the latest decision fans would use the ground floor of the revamped Shed 10 and the new cloud structure. Cruise ships would also use the wharf but passengers would be processed at other ports before berthing in Auckland for the World Cup. Mr McCully said the old cargo shed would be upgraded so it did "not visually impair the site". He could not give details but said that was an ARC responsibility and the Government was happy with that. He said the future of Shed 10 after the World Cup would be made by the Waterfront Development Agency which would be formed later this year. That body would decide if the shed remained as part of the international cruise terminal planned for Queens Wharf, Mr McCully said. He said the Government was happy with the outcome. Auckland Mayor John Banks said it was a sensible decision which future proofed Shed 10 and ensured suitable facilities would be in place for the Word Cup. The cost was expected to be about $9 million for the cloud temporary structure and about $9.8m for landscaping the wharf. Upgrading Shed 10 would be on top of those costs, Mr McCully said.

RAIL LINK BETWEEN [CBD + AIRPORT] ON THE CARDS ?
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3111/3230391107_86c522217e_o.jpg
Advocates of a rail link between the airport and downtown Auckland are hailing the signing of a multi-party agreement to identify and protect the best route as a major step forward. The Manukau City Council is one of six parties to the airport multi-modal corridor study funded by the Auckland Regional Transport Authority and the NZ Transport Agency. Manukau mayor Len Brown is hoping the agreement will accelerate work on the airport rail link. It's "a crucial part of public transport for Auckland" and needs to be fast-tracked, he says. "Rail to the airport is one of the most critical transport links in the country, providing rapid transit for travellers, freight and commuters." The study due to get under way next February will identify preferred routes, where to connect with bus and road and how best to secure those sites. Mr Brown says it's "obvious" what the best route will be. The regional land transport strategy already identifies double-tracked heavy rail as the preferred rapid transit option between Britomart and the airport. The 29km route runs from Avondale to Onehunga alongside SH20, over the second Manukau Harbour bridge then beside the southwestern motorway to the airport. There would be a rail link to the main trunk line at Puhinui Rd and the Onehunga branch line would also feed in from the north. Mr Brown says Manukau is already "working closely" with the Auckland Regional Council to get designations in place to protect the preferred corridor before the supercity takes over. "We're both keen as mustard to progress it as much as we can in the final weeks." The airport corridor study is the first element in the four-year multiparty agreement also being signed by KiwiRail and Auckland International Airport Ltd. The agreement also requires a "progression plan" to deliver the rail link and its stations as well as plans for state highways and integrated public transport in the southwest for the next 30 years. The Auckland Transition Agency is being asked to ensure that the agreement is picked up by the new Auckland Council and Auckland Transport.

THE TASTE FOR NEW [HOUSES] IS BACK
http://www.pbase.com/enigma35/image/121880961/original.jpg
New Zealanders' appetite for new houses appears to be returning, according to figures out yesterday. Statistics New Zealand said the number of new dwellings authorised, including apartments, for the year to June rose 14 per cent from a year earlier to 16,167 units. The seasonally adjusted number of new dwellings authorised last month was up 3.5 per cent on May. As the economy recovers and there is greater clarity on the outlook for mortgage rates and employment prospects we will see the housing market slowly recover. We expect this to happen in the second half of 2011. Jane Turner of ASB said the sector was showing a slow return to slightly better fortunes. Consent applications tended to lead construction activity by around three months.
