^^ in mindanao:
1. malaybalay city (bukidnon)
2. baguio calinan, davao city
3. buda, davao city

grabe ang fog in those areas especially at night time, super taas na kasi ang mga lugar na yan eh, basically, if it is closer to the clouds, it must be cold.

I once drove along the Davao-Bukidnon Boundary stretch at night time and I could hardly see the road. It was vitually zero visibilty at some point due to thick fogs that rolled in. Yes, car airconditioning was useless there.

a particlar place inClaveria, Misamis Oriental where the 5J 387 crashed.. That's in Mt. Sumagaya i think.. It has been turned into a park with landscapes. Havent been there but a friend said, it's colder than benguet.. You would hardly see the surroundings because of fogs even at noon time..

I have been to Matti which is on the foothills of Mt. Sumagaya. Our tour guides intimated to us that the cadavers from the fallen aircraft were hauled down to this community were a road link easily connects to the national hi-way. Matti was a bit nippy in the afternoon.

i hope you're just saying it as a joke. try imagine being in winter clothes for 4-6 months in a year (roughly around 6-10 lbs depending on the the extremity) and probably in just 1 winter you'd be cursing.:lol:

if you are referring baguio then you'd be in early fall or spring like temperatures so it's just light jackets or sweaters.

same with sinjin, temperatures doesn't have to be a criteria in choosing a captial.

Cebu's Summer Capital (Mantalongon Town, Dalaguete, Cebu)

Osmena Peak

http://www.dalaguete.gov.ph/tourism_files/nature_files/obong_images/osmena.jpg

While Mantalongon has been known as the vegetable kingdom of Cebu, quite a few realizes that its actually a magnificent haven for both local and foreign trekking afecionados in the country. Here mountaineers pass through a natural showcase of highly-varied landscape. Osmeņa Peak is the highest peak among the Mantalongon range. Behind it, the mountain ranges stretch as far as Badian to the Southwest. One can trek across the mountain ranges to get to Badian, practically cutting across the island of Cebu westward.

For habitable environments, where people actually live and work and not just a hut in the middle of nowhere, the Pagasa records have it as baguio then malaybalay both have records lower than 10 degrees centigrade.

For a specific place, MT. Apo has been known to go below freezing regularly, am not sure if Mt. Pulag which is furhter north and just ever slightly lower than mt apo is measured, it should make sense that it's colder since there is a distinct cold season in that latitude as opposed to davao's perpetual spring, of course this can only be verified scientifically, i don't know if anyone has done it yet though. Probably more important things to measure, like sea levels for global warming!

Manila was chosen because of it's deep natural harbor that made it an important port on the lucrative trade routes between the East and the West.

Florida and the Philippines does have similar climates. Although it can get much hotter here (temperature wise) in the summer compared to there, but it's much more humid in the Philippines. Also, winters here in Florida are mild but we do get our share of below freezing temperatures but that only lasts a few hours, and some rare flurries (more frequent in northern Florida).

I guess not only because of Manila's natural deep harbor but also.. it being on the plains of Luzon... Manila has become the center of commerce in the country since the 16th century and back in the days if you want to go to Banaue or Sagada or any of the mountainous provinces.. you will need to walk for days to get there as there wouldn't be roads there... remember that commerce in the old days was enhanced by the Galleon trades... plus I guess at least a century back those provinces are only inhabited by tribal people...

Di ba due to global warming, yung temperature na nararanasan natin ngayon is mas mataas kesa nung years, decades and centuries ago. Malay natin kung ang Manila by then was not that warm? Besides, marami pang puno nun and Pasig River might have helped "airconditioning" the capital. That's the reason kung bakit pinili ng mga Espanyol na gawing bakasyunan ang Malakanyang di ba?

yes Baguio has a high pollution rate... I may not have the stats but in experience of being there... yes... and I'd say Baguio isn't as cold as it was 15years ago... possibly contributed by less pines now, high smoke emissions of PUVs, and most of the hills of Baguio is no longer a pine forest but a forest of houses...

To get there from Baguio, one must take the Halsema Highway in nearby La Trinidad, Benguet and follow all the way to Abatan-Buguis-Kabayan Road. There's another route from Nueva Vizcaya and Banaue that you just have to google yourself.

Last measurement of Mt. Apo is above 10,000 ft but officially its 9,691 ft .

it's true the highest mountain in Hawaii is around 13,000 feet above sea level which is an ideal height for a snow cap ( the name eludes me , but the total height @ 35,000 ft . kung isali yung under water base , i dunno if it is safe to say it is higher than Mt. Everest :D )

Cold??
I don't think there's any place in the RP that gets seriously "cold". Unless, we're talking about mountain tops, and even these places don't get snow. As far as I'm aware, Mt Apo, our highest mountain, is totally snow-free.

the landscape is somewhat similiar to the Cordilleras.

Negros Occidental's equivalent of the cordillera is the town of Don Salvador Benedicto. There are waterfalls, and terraces around the town, and the temp is much lower than the ones in Bacolod. they also grow veggies, flowers and strawbewrries in DSB. but their strawberries are much smaller than the ones in La Trinidad.

neways the coldest place i have been to is Atok, Benguet. we were actually ot supposed to be there, but our car conked out, and its getting dark already so we decided to spend a night there. I was a bit surprised when the lady who ows the house where we slept just leave her veggies, chicken and pork in the dining table and not at the fridge. twas very very cold there. much colder than baguio. so cold that we need to heat water just to brush our teeth.

walang hotel dun.. transient house lng kmi, buti na nga lang meron...

nothing to explore really in Atok, most of its lands are cultivated for high value crops/veggies.

pero nung na stranded kmi dun, their vice mayor was so accomodating that she even offered a room in the minucupal hall for a sleepover pag di kmi naka hanap ng room. i think its around 3-4 hours from baguio.

til now di ko pa rin makaka limutan yung address na tinulugan namin.

i think what the waiter means to say about ice on the road is the condensation of cold air and the hot road, giving it a "freezer effect" <term ko yun....hehehe>. kasi pumunta kami ng bukidnon via buda, may condensation above the road na parang fog sa freezer.

This is the swimming pool in the background of a beautiful landscape at Seagul Mountain Resort in Bukidnon Province, Mindanao. Seagul is a great and beautiful place, located up in the mountains, in a very cool environment. One of the waiters at the Restaurant told me that he has seen times when there is ice on the road near the resort! In addition, you can buy strawberries along the roadside, very rare in the hot Philippines!

To get there from Baguio, one must take the Halsema Highway in nearby La Trinidad, Benguet and follow all the way to Abatan-Buguis-Kabayan Road. There's another route from Nueva Vizcaya and Banaue that you just have to google yourself.

Thanks for sharing the pics above. Mt. Pulag has one of the most beautiful sceneries among RP mountains.:)

I remember the first time I got there (it was a December), it rained from the grassland to the peak and according to one of my buddies who had a thermometer (his G-shock actually), the temperature went down to -10 degrees celsius! An hour or two before reaching the grassland, it was only 8 degrees C (at the Rangers Station; clear day, no rain). The temperature was killing me this time. The raindrops felt like crushed ice hitting your face (but when I touched my face there wasn't any solid stuff or anything). Also, I felt like all my muscles were moving back and forth and changing places. Imagine nagha hike ka and nanginginig (o nagra-rumble) buo mong katawan at the same time. Idagdag mo pa zero visibility. About 1 meter radius lang ang makikita mo. Ni bangin na babagsakan mo di mo alam kung gano kalalim! :nuts: And if I touch anything, it felt like I touched a sharp blade. Super-ouch talaga! Also, di naman ako sinisipon nun prior to the climb pero at that moment walang hinto sa pagtulo uhog ko, hehehe.. at parang may namumuong yelo pa sa gilid ng ilong ko.. :lol: To cut the story short, hindi kame nakapag overnight sa peak kase nagka hypothermia yung isang girl na kasama namin and we need to hike back to safer grounds.... nabuhay naman sya and pagbalik namin sa Baguio, wa epek na lamig, pa-sando-sando at shorts na lang kame samantalang naka-bonnet at sweater pa lahat ng mga tao!:lol:

I therefore conclude, Mt. Pulag is the coldest place in the Philippines (personal experience po). :)

i also thought na may prob lang yung watch ng buddy ko. what i'm sure about is akala ko mamamatay na ko sa sobrang lamig. dun ko lang kase naranasan na parang hinihiwa ng blade ang palad ko tuwing may hahawakan o hihipuin ako.. and for sure mas mababa temp dun sa peak kesa sa 8degC sa ranger station kung saan kaya ko pa ang lamig.

may entrance fee sa mt. pulag. sa ranger station nagbabayad. at that time P175 per person kung di ako nagkakamali. national park kase sya.

you might be referring to sleet. its a type of precipitation in between snow and rain.

it melts instantly because the temp is at melting point. which means, temp is above 0 deg. maybe the temp is around 2-3 deg at that time. :cheers:

Yeah, but the presence of frost should have been prevalent. Water freezes fast.

I don't really think that temperature there went below freezing or worst, -10C.

^^ Beautiful...Camp Sabros is how many hours away from downtown Davao?

Bai Teej, the travel from downtown Davao City would take around 2 hours. Here's some info i gathered about Camp Sabros on my visit there on March 17, 2008.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1. Travel Time. From Downtown Davao, around two hours.
* 45 mins to 1 hour from Downtown Davao to the junction of the National Highway and the road to Kapatagan.
* 45 mins to 1 hour from the National Highway uphill on the Kapatagan road up to the Mt. Apo National Park Checkpoint.
2. Suggested Transportation.
* If you wanna go all the way up to Camp Sabros, a 4-wheel drive vehicle/suv is recommended.
* Any vehicle if you are willing to trek 1 km uphill to Camp Sabros. Just park your vehicle at the Mt. Apo National Park Checkpoint.
3. Location and Directions. Camp Sabros is at Kapatagan, Digos City, in the mountains 1000+meters/3000+feet above sea level. From Davao City, follow the national road en route to Digos City. Along that road you will see a Y-Road that leads you to either GenSan or Kidapawan. Follow the Kidapawan Route (and slow down, look at the right side of the road). Before reaching the DASURECO (Davao del Sur Electric Company) compound, you will see a road on the right side of the highway with a sign saying "THIS WAY TO KAPATAGAN." Turn right and from then on just follow the road to Kapatagan. When you reach the checkpoint to the Mt. Apo National Park / Mt. Apo Mountaineering Trail, the road to Camp Sabros is to the right and uphill.
The road to Kapatagan is "putol-putol" cement and dirt road, but the road is good, a little steep on parts. Sedans and small cars can be brought to Kapatagan but not up to Camp Sabros, which would require a 4-wheel drive vehicle. You can always park your vehicle at the checkpoint and go on foot to Camp Sabros... a 1-kilometer uphill trek. ("kapoy" but fun)
4. Overnight Stay.
* Php1,200 per night (good for 4 persons),
* Php2,000 per night (good for 10 persons)
5. Food and Drinks, etc.. You may bring your "baons" :) The deli at Camp Sabros also serves food at affordable prices (P20-P50 per order!). Ice-cold drinks are available. Alcoholic beverages are also available at the deli, but you can also bring your own. :) Cigarettes are also sold at the deli. Personal hygiene items are available at the deli shop (sanitary napkins, soap, toothpaste, etc.).
6. Adventure, Entertainment, Amenities, etc. Zip Lines (380 meters and 400 meters - the longest in the Philippines), Cable Car. Picnic Tables, Cable TV, Billiard Hall, Deli/Diner, Bar, Souvenirs.
7. Admission and Fees. No entrance fees, no corkage fees. Zip Line rides range from 150 to 300 per head (round-trip -- alangan!).
*380-meters (zip 380 meters to the other mountain, then ride a cable car back to Camp Sabros)
-in pairs - Php150 per head
-solo - Php200 per head
*400-meters (zip 380 meters to the other mountain, zip 400 meters at DOUBLE SPEED back to Camp Sabros)
-solo only - Php300 per head (LONGEST AND CRAZIEST ZIP LINE RIDE IN THE PHILIPPINES)
Not exactly. Para magka-snow cap ang isang mataas na bundok, there should be abundant sub-zero precipitation (hail or snow) year-round and a constant air temperature not going beyond 0 degrees Celsius that is sufficient to not melt all of the ice and snow. In the case of all tall peaks in the Philippines, even though sub-zero temperatures are recorded at certain times and certain seasons of the year, there is no sustained sub-zero temperature year-round that can keep any of the frost that may have accumulated in the peaks from melting away.
By the way, I read in the Philippine Daily Inquirer about 8 or so years ago that crops in Benguet are sometimes ruined by frost (yelong nabubuo mula sa moisture na nasa paligid, as opposed to snow na nabubuo sa mga ulap at galing sa langit), and it was even recorded that the temperature at that particular area in Benguet was -4 degrees Celsius.
So it wouldn't be far from the truth if temperatures on the top of Mt. Pulag reach -10 degrees Celsius.
even at above zero, frost is already possible. presence of frost does not indicate tempearatures below zero. And the lowest recorded temp in baguio is 9 deg. in benguet province, its 6 deg.
You're right. Formation of frost depends on the dew point of the surrounding air, and not the actual temperature of the air.
And the lowest recorded temp in baguio is 9 deg. in benguet province, its 6 deg.
The lowest temperature ever in Baguio City since records began was recorded on January 18, 1961, when the mercury hit 6.27 degrees Celsius (http://www.newsflash.org/2000/12/ht/ht001435.htm). As far as Googling for answers is concerned this is the lowest figure I've seen for the Philippines.
In contrast, Tuguegarao holds the record for the highest temperature ever recorded in the Philippines and the Pacific Islands (Oceania, except for Australia), at 42.2 degrees Celsius (http://wmo.asu.edu/oceania-highest-temperature) on April 29, 1912.
