View Full Version : #Photo Gallery: Pictures around Doha
Artanis January 23rd, 2007, 11:05 AM Some time ago I posted a few of my photos on another forum, luckily I found them again so here they are. They were taken on a friday in august when the weather was actually not that good.
Some pictures that I've taken in August 2006, while I was doing an internship in Qatar. Some of the pictures are taken whilst driving to the city center, a very big shopping center. That and my crappy camera, explains the lower quality then that you are probably used to.
Anyhow, it should give you a nice idea on the huge number of projects that are busy now in Qatar. And this is just one part of the city. But I don't have to tell you guys :)
Let's start in the suburbs: all over Doha, there are towers painted with sport activities for the upcoming Asian Games in November:

One of the things I really don't understand is why there are so many roundabouts in Qatar. I mean, you don't use a roundabout on highways! For me that's one of the reasons why there is traffic jam all the time.

This one is taken on the corniche, a road near the shore.
Also on the corniche, near the little harbour, you can find some authentic looking buildings:

On the corniche, you can have a nice view of a whole new district being build.

Now it was time to get back to the car, August is really the worst time to go to Qatar: the humid levels are spiking and the temperature reaches 50°C. Luckily there is more airco then people. We now drove to the city center, one of the places where you can eat, having fun or shop. On the way I took some more pictures:

And the entrance of the City Center, where our voyage stops:

I hope you enjoyed it. I can ensure you, this is only a very small part of the construction fever in Qatar!
suzan January 23rd, 2007, 11:38 AM Nice pics! thanks for sharing! :)
QatPhils January 23rd, 2007, 11:39 AM i've seen those photos
superinfiniti January 23rd, 2007, 02:36 PM Those were professional ...... Suitable as wallpapres :) ....but because they are small they are perfect as mobile wallpapers :D
Artanis January 23rd, 2007, 06:08 PM I've posted them on skyscraperpage before, but not a single reply. And indeed they aren't so big, but only taken with a 3.1MP camera in a moving car.
If you want one bigger, let me know and I will see what I can do.
QatPhils January 24th, 2007, 11:55 AM no thanks

Gripper April 19th, 2007, 06:21 AM i think Qatar still needs way more buildings if it wants to compete with Dubai, i mean looking at these pictures i would say even Sharjah in UAE has more buildings, and Dubai and Abu dhabi are way ahead.

Tom_Green April 21st, 2007, 07:24 PM ya sharjah has loads of resedential towers
I think that Sharjah has the most massive skyline in the middle east. They are building all skyscrapers in one place. Not like Dubai. The skyscrapers there are build in 3 places.
asif iqbal April 22nd, 2007, 06:26 PM GCC countrys look all the same artifical
Qatar Son 333 April 22nd, 2007, 08:29 PM ^^^^^^ you can say that for a hundred years but doha will never be artificial i mean whats soo artificial about it ???
nihad April 23rd, 2007, 09:41 AM well sharjah is a gr8 city but u cannot compare it wid cities like dubai n doha.... coz the city is not well planned ... n it'll take time for sharjah to come up to the mark..... u have lot of souq's n lot of residential towers in sharjah... not a city wid massive skyline in the middleast.....
wht u see in the west bay convention area in doha are those built... there are 2 times more buildings under construction.... all skyscrapers......
nihad April 23rd, 2007, 09:47 AM plz clarify why are all gcc countries artificial...????
asif iqbal April 23rd, 2007, 01:41 PM no offence to anyone, well there is another discussion going on in lebanon thread reguarding middleastern citys and places like Beirut, Tehran and Damascus would be more of a ideal place than for example Dubai
the reasons are obvoius, westerners who have travelled to travel these places I am one of them seems to get the idea that now Dubai attacts some of the worst UK chavs who dont have any knowledge of culture or hertitage not that there is much to begin with
artifical in the sense that all there is big shiny buildings advertising western goods, and its all been made in last 10 years for what reason would you want to see that
i can understand why natives from these countrys would be offended but outsiders see things differently
places like Beirut since 1950s and who have been cross roads of trade for centurys has something special about them, the people especially if there was no war and no iranian revolution Dubai and GCC wouldnt even be known, bahrain was part of Iran!!
crazyeight April 23rd, 2007, 03:08 PM What the hell are you on about? You speak like you've visited every GCC city. The UAE has many cities and is quite diverse. Dubai just happens to be the UAEs most popular city for obvious reasons, and there's nothing wrong with that. It's not like every other city in the UAE is a replica of Dubai. FYI, most chavs cannot afford to come to Dubai.
Beirut is one of the best cities in the Middle East, but Dubai and Beirut are different, but they do compliment one another quite well. Damascus is a historical city with little progress, lacking in all the basic services and infrastructure. Beirut however, is both modern and historic at the same time and sure, the war has screwed it over but it always seems to rise again. Dubai does not have a long history, but it chose not to remain a drowsy desert fishing village and instead, transformed itself into a modern destination , which was obviously the right choice. IMO, Tehran is still a great city but it would have been much greater if it wasn't for the revolution. That said, I don't think it was fair of you to say Dubai would have never made it. There's a place for all Middle Eastern cities.
Doha is definately better than Sharjah. It's catching up to Dubai and Abu Dhabi quite fast. It has even exceeded many Middle Eastern cities in the levels of education.

it wasent in Iran it was part of the persian empire long long long time ago and on one of the mapi saw that qatar used to be part of it aswell but never actual iran after the persian empire ended that british thingy happened then the independence blablabla until now 2007
nihad April 23rd, 2007, 05:48 PM people c'mon every famous city has a history that is either positive n some are negative..... it's not from which dynasty or empire these cities are.... wht we really shud be lukin at is how these cities have grown at the moment......
the best example is doha.... it too does not have a very vast cultural heritage n stuff but it has grown ....... it wasn't tooo gud 5 yrs ago..... but what people luk at is how the country is rite now......
i do agree that cultural heritage plays an important role in promotin the city but not all the time.... i agree wid crazyeight coz these cities never let them down ... they never under estimated themselves .. now its a lesson for those strugglin cities that well plannin n the power to strive will result in cities like dubai n doha.......

I speak because ive been to GCC many times, and every emirate in UAE, all 7 apart from Fujairah, and yeah we all know but that notoroius ras al khaimah airport!
to know about dubai you have be outside dubai otherwise you will live in fairy tale world
to make great city it must have culture, history, heritage and most of all hospitality of its citizens, dubai is home to UK Chavs who go McDonalds and then go Jumeriah beech for sun tan let alone the American marines who dock at jebal ali and play golf and buy women very bad advertisment!
places like damascus are few and far between, have you ever visted the museum there it takes you back 1000s of years
Tehran is another historically important city just as Beirut, nothing matchs them from GCC and no ranting will change that
as the saying goes you can "buy" technology but never "make" technology
Rifan April 25th, 2007, 09:42 AM GUYS......CHECK THE THREAD TITLE...........

You should now that the most massive skyline doesn`t means that it`s also the best city. ;)
If you drive through Sharjah you will be impressed by the many layers of skyscrapers.
But Doha is more intersting for me. The next time i will go to Dubai i will make a stop in Doha.

B-Patriot May 1st, 2007, 11:08 AM artifical in the sense that all there is big shiny buildings advertising western goods, and its all been made in last 10 years for what reason would you want to see that

Bahrain has an old History too... One of the Oldest histories in the world... Of course modern day Bahrain is not soo rich n old as modern Day beirut, cuz it wasn't very rich... Whereas Beirut was... However, yes, its not 10, 20 or 30 yrs old.. Its older... The oldest in the gulf...
And, lol, what's the iranian obessesion with Bahrain... Its a little teeny island the Persian Empire had control of for a little time... But so did Oman i think have control of Bahrain for a little time, u don't see them claiming it as their own... Nor do you see the portugese or British doing that... Arabs aren't claming Al-Andalus (Spain) as their own, except for retard muslim fanatics and terrorists like Al-Qaeda maybe...
Get over it already... Bahrain has a mixed heritage, sure... Persian, and Arab... But the people have chosen the Arab heritage and identity as being more relevant, etc... But we still also retain some of our persian heritage... We're a multi-cultural country...
Get over yourself :)

Skyprince May 31st, 2007, 11:28 AM I have traveled to many countries across the globe, and the regioon I'm most impressed with is the Arabian Gulf ! I've never been to Qatar though, but I was troubly surprised and impressed with what I saw in UAE and Oman ! ( im not the one with skyscraper-maniac tho... bu I really like the cultures in both UAE and Oman-- everybody dress up in dishdashas and abayas ! ) I really wanna visit Doha hopefully early next year. It's really unbelievable that Qatar , a very small country , has such a reputable airline ( Qatar Airways ), has a world-class broadcasting/news company ( al-Jazeera ). Skyline is definitely superb. I will never think twice if I get job offer in Qatar.

nihad March 25th, 2008, 04:37 PM Stunning Pictures, Doha has an amazing skyline ! I could be living there next year if I work for Qatar Airways, Im planing to apply when I finish Tourism Managment at the end of the year.
gr8.. nice to have more people comin in..
Jayme March 26th, 2008, 06:51 AM What is it like living in Doha, Lifestyle etc ? would there be a large Differences then living in Australia ?
Qatar Son 333 March 26th, 2008, 10:30 AM Well it depends on your old lifestyle, aka what it like to live in melbourne, brisbane, sydney etc ?
Jayme March 26th, 2008, 11:18 AM Living in Melbourne its nice , go out, go to the casino, go to Bars, shopping hanging out with friends drive to lots of places.
I dont think Doha will much diffrent, I guess it would be the same, expect making new friends....
Qatar Son 333 March 26th, 2008, 02:08 PM hmmmm its about the same here except that casino's dont exsist here but if you whant a bar for a drink or somthing you can only do that at five star hotels. but for malls we have good ones spread around the city... and even some triditional souq's that are open for everybody to view the past of qatar..
QatPhils March 27th, 2008, 12:52 PM ^^What was the aka in post no. 112?:D:D
Btw, Qs333, i once past a tiny casino before, but are casinos strictly banned in this part of the world?
ahmad.oustwani March 27th, 2008, 03:51 PM Casinos or super nightclubs don't exist in the gulf......there are in Egypt, Syria, and Lebanon......i am sure there is in Morocco too though......and i am not sure about the rest of the arab world........
Qatar Son 333 March 27th, 2008, 09:53 PM if you whant clubs yeah its normal (not night clubs) but casino's and bars are stricly banned in the GCC region but in the rest of the middle east as Ahmed said there are casino's in Egypt, Lebanon etc....
Aaron the AKA was about his old (previous) lifestyle in Australia as in melbourne, sydney, brisbane etc.... im sure you understand
ahmad.oustwani March 28th, 2008, 02:25 AM no there are night clubs and bars in the GCC except of Saudi.....Dubai, Bahrain, and Doha are known for it......not Kuwait and saudi though........there is curretly 37 bars, night clubs, and lounges in Doha. the number will increase to 70+ in a year though.....i work for an event magazine here so trust me. in fact.....just tonight 3000 people on the intercon beach partying for Paloma on the beach event.....and 4 days ago was the opening on Sky view bar at he La Cigal Doha......really nice......they've got sunset sessions and really yummy summery sky cocktails.....with an amazing view of west bay tower......its a place you should go to if you ever visit.......
Qatar Son 333 March 28th, 2008, 08:54 AM But arnt all those in hotels ? i am speaking about the public ones..... as in casino's, but bars is normal fist example mini bar !!! lol lust joking
ahmad.oustwani March 28th, 2008, 09:37 AM yeahhh......thats true....only in hotels and clubs....and mostly 5 and 4 stars hotels and clubs....Hotels such sheraton, intercon, le cigal,, Ramada, W hotel...etc, and clubs scuh Al Dana club, Diplomatic club, Rugby club, Rydges European family club, gulf club....etc
Between.....where is the mini bar....i haven't heard of it yet.....is it in Doha?
QatPhils March 28th, 2008, 10:48 AM if you whant clubs yeah its normal (not night clubs) but casino's and bars are stricly banned in the GCC region but in the rest of the middle east as Ahmed said there are casino's in Egypt, Lebanon etc....
Aaron the AKA was about his old (previous) lifestyle in Australia as in melbourne, sydney, brisbane etc.... im sure you understand
okay i didn't know
i thought that you were referring to 'also known as'.
Qatar Son 333 March 28th, 2008, 06:00 PM ok aaron..
Ahmed you gave me a huge burst of laugh's !!!!! loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooool
Minibars is the nickname of the small fridge found in hotel rooms, the ones with Alchol and things like that in it.... there also foundin the hotels in Qatar......
ahmad.oustwani March 29th, 2008, 08:34 AM hahahha.....i know what a minibar is....but i just did not cross my mind thinking of it......this is hilariousss.......

cebu726 February 18th, 2013, 05:26 PM I'm planning to travel on December this year to Middle East for sightseeing. My choices are Dubai, Doha, Bahrain, Cairo, Tehran, and Beirut. I couldn't afford to go to all these so I'll choose only two (destination pairing) which can be reached at most 1 hour apart by plane. My pairing choices are
Doha, Dubai, for first pairing
Doha, Bahrain, for 2nd pairing
Bahrain, Tehran, for 3rd pairing
Cairo, Doha for 4th pairing
Tehran, Dubai, for 5th pairing
I hope someone in Doha right now could convince me to prioritize Doha? Is Doha a good choice to pair with other city? Do u recommend me to pick Doha to pair with another city?
Tnx a lot.

Alrayyan February 19th, 2013, 06:37 AM ^^ well if you have looked up doha online and know where to go (katara, souk waqif, museum of islamic art, mathaf museum of modern arab art, villaggio mall and the pearl qatar) then for sure its a yes for Doha.
Doha and Dubai would be my recommendation.
