I love the location they picked for this tower. It's probably been answered before but what was on this site before they started building?

I still think the tower looks funny but I think it's going to look beautiful.

I know this question has been asked 1000 times but when do we expect to see the core rise for this beauty? I am a little impatient for this building to rise!!! Sorry!!!

Thanks

Judging from the fact that an over 2000 ft Burj Dubai has less views and slightly more posts than the present hole in the ground that will become the Chicago Spire, we should see this beauty (as you put it) rise (no pun intended on this and not to be taken in an offensive manner) in about 3.5 million views or 3000 posts. It will have more posts than the Mile High Tower at 500 ft than the Mile High Tower will have at say....a mile high.

Please don't be impatient on this. It could be the end of you mentally. Each foot this building grows will result in 10 pages of posts. If this isn't bad go to that other web site, (site named in my signature) and see how many posts they have on the Chicago Spire. You'll think that cobwebs are forming on this one.

This is actually not true. Burj Dubai is on its 10th thread or something like that, Chicago Spire is only on its first thread. So while it may look like this building have more posts and reads, in reality it is far behind Burj Dubai and probably will never catch up.

As for me, this Chicagospire building has more artistic look than any other skyscraper I have ever seen here in this forum and, I think it's going to remain wonderfully so in many years to come.

I agree, except for if something taller gets built close to it. As long as it remains amongst the taller ones the design is timeless.

You are closer to the truth, but still a bit off :) The current BD thread is the twenty ninth, with the first 25 having about 500 posts each, and then the 26 - 28 having 1000 posts each. This is the third CS thread, with the previous two having 500 posts each. You can easily find this information in the archives so I don't know why people seem to bring that up in this thread every couple of months.

Wow, fantastic updates! The site is looking very busy! I showed my father this thread and he was telling about how this reminds him of when the Sears Tower was being built and him and his buddy's would go and watch the construction progress every few weeks. Sad to say they where a little broke and unable to afford a camera at the time so they don't have many pictures to show. I guess this is like the "Sears Tower" of my generation being build right in front of my very eyes. Just amazing!

^^It's always something special to watch a skyscraper's progress from hole in the ground to topping out; watching the progress of a tower like CS from its inception (and BD etc etc) makes it even more memorable.

At the time of 9/11 it was said "no more supertalls". In fact, the opposite is true and we are in the right place and time to watch the new era of 'ultratalls' as they happen.

Hello, I'm a brand new member to the forum, or any forum for that matter. Just wanted to see how this works. I'm a huge fan of skyscrapers and have an obvious bias towards Chicago Skyscrapers. What got me started here was I was looking for a rendering of what the skyline would look like in say 2012, when all the current projects are completed. I asked Emporis to develop something like this but I got no reply.

This is truly the first render I've seen that makes me think it will look great. I have a good feeling that the real thing will look even better since it will probably sparkle in the sunlight and glitter at night....by the way, yes I'm officially gay for writing that last sentence. I like to drop the soap too.

I love this picture. It shows almost as much progress for the building as the psychotic posting in that other website my signature in red refers to. Yes Rick this is a beautiful site.

The JAGOFFS in the other website (see signature in red one more time please) would hold the item in the photo as a shrine to be gold plated and auctioned off to one lucky bastard to put in his living room.

One day, this building will make it to the lobby level and THEN everybody can just let loose and throw a shindig followed by a postathon like you never seen before.

One thing...is there going to be some sort of amenity room or bar on top for the homeowners to go up or was that a concept they are not going for?

The skyscrappre community would hope so, I mean if a massive country like Russia is gonna put their name on one tower as a status symbol, then it should beat out a tower merely symbolizing one city's status. not sure if that one will make sense, it's early in the day

I don't think Trunp Tower will be finished first but it could be close. I don't see any question about it, this building will definitely be finished before Freedom Tower. Freedom Tower is definitely one of the slowest building ever built.

April 11th, 2008, 09:14 PM
^^ This is all a bit off topic, but in any case, The Freedom Tower should be finished first. Because of the site it's on, the Freedom Tower has had a hugely complex foundation to build. But now that the foundation is coming to completion and the Tower is approaching street level, there will no longer be that extra barrier to progress, and as such, the building will proceed at a normal pace for a building of its size.

I also like the Russia Tower better. It has public access and the building is huge. The CS still will be a nice building. Real life should make it better looking than its renderings.

Or maybe she'll trip and smash through the window...But I don't think we have to worry about that because she would probably never move to Chicago. Chicago invented skyscrapers and New Yorkers just can't seem to get over it. Frankly, I prefer the Chicago skyline over New York's because it is a little more civilized spread along Lake Michigan the way it is. I'm proud to say that our Mayor is viewing Chicago as a model for the city he wants Miami to be, and I am proud to say that Miami aspires to be the Chicago of the South. I don't need to "check you damn timeline." All the literature says that Chicago is the birthplace of the skyscraper. There is simply no argument about it! There is no scholarly debate here. What you are stating is what you want to be based on your own opinion, and there is simply no time to argue with you about how much you want to make your opinion fact.

Well, among a myriad of websites that call Chicago the birthplace of the skyscraper, I did manage to find one that called lower Manhattan the birthplace of the skyscraper. That was the Skyscraper Museum in lower Manhattan, though I was not able to ascertain why they call it the birthplace of the skyscraper other than it being another case of someone passing off their opinion as fact.

Anyway, getting back on the topic, I can hardly wait for the Chicago Spire to top out so that I can go to Chicago and see it. At this point, I may never go to New York again, even after the Freedom Tower is completed.

Penis never came to mind for me in this case though it did come to mind in the case of the Two International Finance Center in Hong Kong, which does look like a giant penis to me! I hadn't thought of drill bit either, but it does sort of look like that. I'm glad Chicago is getting it anyway. Here in Miami, our supertalls can only be a few feet above 1,000 because of the proximity to Miami International Airport, and we had to fight to get that much.

next time I'll think before I say penis on the thread. And one person not coming to NYC isn't going to stop the millions of people who come there every year from coming. It's like I said you didn't see a supertall till New York built one. And a skyscraper is any build that dominates the skyline. And yes the word skyscraper was coin in chicago. But that was just the word, the buildings were around long before the term.

Yeah I'm a jackass I said it looks like a penis just for his remarks toward me. I don't really think it looks like that. It's a good look building but what else does it have other then high and a twist to the ground. Give me more to look forward to, chicago seems to be the home town of ugly ass supertalls. But you might think I'm just hating and thats your right.

P.s I'm not saying this tower is ugly, I'm just saying some of the city other supertalls are.

Yes, you are a jackass and childish too. and I suppose NY is home of the beautiful supertalls? give me a fucking break...Look at the new ugly ass WTC and all the other ugly ass supertalls proposed in NY, with just one being the exception. You need to get your head out of ur ass before making these stupid comments.

Dude we had building over 100 and 200 feet when chicago was still farm land. The word skyscraper might have been coined in chicago but tall buildings weren't invinted there foo. Check you damn timeline NYC was Building taller the 100 feet before chicago had one that was 50. And let not forget your beloved chi town didn't have a supertall till the 1960's and NY has been building them since the 1930's, so who the granddad of tall azz building oh wait that would be New york.

Damn you're a fool. Chicago invented the technology to construct skyscrapers and built the first highrise building. Before telling people to check their timeline, do yourself a favor and check your history books.

chicago spire!!! more or less same height as russia tower and incheon tower. Incheon tower tallest in its design, but i reckon this competition will lead all three skyscrapers to becoming taller (trying to beat each other)

April 14th, 2008, 09:21 PM
I've noticed that the height between each concrete rings get shorter as going down. WHY?

It has to do with the fact that the external ground pressure is greater the deeper you go so the ring must be stronger to resist the compression forces. Much in the same way that submarines that go very deep must have hulls much stronger than surface ships.

The increase in force is dependent partially on the type of soil, looser soils create more pressure than harder soils.

How long would it take for chicago spire base to look like freedom tower base of now?

This photo of chicago spire base is weird. by looking at top of the picture or floors by the glass, the floors extend out to the edge (obviously), but looking at bottom ot the core, it looks like the tower itself is rising from just core size. Unlike other towers the base doesn't have floors wide as the whole tower, making it look like just core and tent wraping around the core and maybe less weight support for the outer floors above. (hope it makes sense)

Chicago has a look at me state of mind. I mean what is it your city know for really. And you can't talk about WTC. Look how ugly the empty as sears tower is. I bet you think your doing something in the Chi don't you. I bet you even think chicago's a world class city. But I'm sorry to tell you it really isn't. Your city sucks I mean it really sucks. But I ain't here to trash chi town. Oh yeah you might want to get your face in a book and quit getting your info off the internet. I've read the time lines and chicago having the first skyscraper doesn't add up. They had what some could call the first skyscrapers in France.

But I'm sick of talking with a bunch of know nothings. I told the truth and facts if a buildings ugly it's ugly. But it's like I said this building isn't ugly but the sear tower is.

Now lets stop city bashing. There great city's in their own right's. All the nonsense aside chicago happens to be my second favorite midwest city beside Columbus. And it's my third fav city in the USA. We're all americans right guys, Where all humans. Then lets act like it. We should all be happy we have amazing buildings on our planet that we all can sure and be proud off.

Dude, you are pathetic and you're not getting off that easy, nice try though. It's sad when some New Yorkers who for whatever reasons are insecure about their city try to bash other cities to make themselves feel good. What's even more sad is when FAKE ass New Yorker wannabes do it. With that said, remember where you're from and stop trying to act all high and mighty by claiming New York. You're from the midwest, columbus? so don't let leaving in New York go to your head because you'll always be an Ohio native and I'm going to leave it at that. If Chicago had a look at me state of mind you would see flashy billboards and lights everywhere but you don't so quit pulling shit out of your ass because Chicago doesn't need to be flashy. Now, Sears tower might not be the best looking building and no one is claiming it is but at least it's still standing unlike those two ugly boxes called wtc. I bet you think you're doing something in New York but what is your hometown of Columbus known for? Your opinion of Chicago not being world class is just that an opinion and just like an asshole everybody has one but the fact is Chicago is a world class city. I know for a fact that you're getting your info out of your ass because all of it is bullshit and inaccurate. Anyway the whole wtc complex is ugly, both the new and the old ones.

Btw, I too am tired of talking with a know nothing idiot who's from columbus but now is clinging to ny's balls and now is trying to bash Chicago.

Now, lets stop city bashing. they're great cities in their own rights. And you said you can't talk about WTC, well at least the sears is still standing. the sears tower is more of a american icon the the wtc will ever be. every since the wtc was attacked it was finally known around the world. beofe the attack they where never really known. and it was even said by the architect of the wtc. but the sears is and was more known. yeah, at least Chicago isnt dirty, like new york. In my opinion, you are making it sound like you expect the cladding to help support the tower. I'm not positive, but I believe the 6 spiraling columns support the building along with the core. Meaning, there really is no effect on support by not having floor plates and cladding extend to the base. I hope that helps you understand a little better?

P.S. - Chicago is world class, beautiful, and the birthplace of the skyscraper.

FM 2258

^^

I think I had the same thoughts as buildmilehightower since the support at the bottom of this tower looks extremely flimsy and weak with all that open space. Most other skyscrapers seem to have thick solid pillars supporting the edge of the tower. I'm no structural engineer so it's not in my hands to worry about.

Building this tower could have lot of set backs, perfect angle of steel girders and its shape is required looking at the model. I'm sure the final structure will be perfect.

Great update EnDleSsWaLtZ. I'm so glad the tower has evolved into what it is now because the first design was ugly as sin. The final iteration is stunningly beautiful.

Yes - - the entire site will be excavated down 70+ feet.

For the hole - once the caissons are all in, the big crane will be removed and little rigs, and men with shovels, will dig out the tops of the caissons, the rebar that integrates into the mat.

As done at 353 N Clark

The core is 60+ feet down now -
The walls of the site are almost completed, and yes they are 75-85' deep, it is hard to grasp how deep this is until you see a 40' + cage lowered in, stopped, and another 40' + cage tied on top.

1/2 a section for the slurry wall

This guy is hilarious! I know it's pathetic, but you gotta admit his bi-polarness during the past few pages sure has been entertaining. I guess every city has one...

Finally, Some (Unconfirmed) Chicago Spire Sales Numbers

April 15, 2008 - The Chicago Spire launched its Asian city marketing tour last month, and according to the Singapore Property News Blog, the primary event held at Singapore’s Four Seasons Hotel drew about 800 potential buyers for the planned 150 story Chicago real estate project. International sales are being handled by Savills, and manager Michael Ng was quoted as saying the “large turnout and sales were above what they had expected.” No official statement was made, but inside sources claimed 30 condos were sold at the event. "Tallest free-standing structure in the Americas" (remembering that the tallest ground-supported structure of any kind in the Americas is and will remian the KVLY-TV tower in North Dakota - a guyed mast).

Yes - - the entire site will be excavated down 70+ feet.

For the hole - once the caissons are all in, the big crane will be removed and little rigs, and men with shovels, will dig out the tops of the caissons, the rebar that integrates into the mat.

As done at 353 N Clark

Since the first quarter ended at the end of March it looks like Wikipedia was wrong again! Of course there's nothing unusual about that.

This information is probably based on the official Chicago Spire site, which claims something similar:
"This sub-ground phase of development will be completed by Q1 2008"

Yes the lack of upward progress causing impatience and even rudeness in some - this could happen on the 'Shard' site and the Russian pyramid forum too.
Rather than be distracted look at the neatness of the Chicago Spire work zone - the lorries neatly aligned ! The colour co-ordinated concrete queue.. the dayglow spray paint on re-bar and other items - there is joy and order here.

Thank you Harry for all the detail shots.. I ascended the Sears Tower in 1985 and what a fine vista opened before me. I imagine it will be enhanced by the Spire (whereas the Trump Tower or 'Silver Boot' as we brothers now refer to it, will add little except to reflect the fine buttress/roof work of nearby older buildings).

Must go now.. today we are having a meal !
Blessyou all.

The Facade looks Beautiful! Very Sexy and Futuristic. This tower sure has some style. However, some parts do look a bit plastic like. Maybe its just the lighting or something. I'm it will look better than this though. Calatrava never gets anything wrong.

It took a few minutes and a few glances at the facade to really come up with a conclusion for my self. I like it, It's not bad. I'm trying to bear in mind that this is a mock up of the real thing. The only thing that I didn't like is that peach or cream color crap on the facade. That I hope they do change... or I to have to adjust.

i think the peach or cream colour "crap" will be gold on the final one. Also the silver wrap thing on the mock facade, which highlights the towers twisting shape, appears to look plastic, subject to damage and not very strong, hence, giving the impression of cheapness and "crapiness". Thats why i think some people here don';t like it very much.
Anyway, like i said before i doubt that the real real deal, will look to perfection and carry that calatrava class to it.

I dont like this tower, base is way to simple, interaction with surrounding's is done very poorly. Whole tower is just to thin. and in general i dont like oval towers to much , In the other hand macro position is very good and cladding might be good so....3/10 from me

madtony8k
April 22nd, 2008, 04:25 PM
is it really cream colored? it looks to me like it's reflecting light from dawn or dusk, which will make any reflective surface look like that. it might just be a little more reflective than the rest

WOW, i haven't seen these pics yet, OK, base does not suck so much but still for a building of that size i would except something better. But other stuff that i mentioned still stands.

And is there any plan for removing those condos on the first pic, they really really do not fit in

Something about the design of the mock-up facade and those renderings posted above doesn't match up.

Notice on the mock-up there is actually a piece of glass between two vertical "risers", whereas on the renderings, there is no such piece of glass...or even two risers at each corner, for that matter.

:dunno:

FTL Beach Bum

^^

On further investigation, it now makes sense. Those renderings are obsolete.

Here is the correct matching design:
