It has the Arch, a cookie cutter baseball stadium and a whole lot of unremarkable skyscrapers... StL has amazing density of 10-12 story buildings, etc etc... but as a skyline... sans the arch.. it fails to make an impact
BGT June 7th, 2003, 08:35 PM 8/10
Oaronuviss June 7th, 2003, 08:41 PM Hmm... it's dece.

tocoto June 7th, 2003, 11:06 PM With all the pictures and info on the forums I think much more of SL than I used to. No offense intended, but for the size of the metro, and aside from the Arch, I think its skyline is very unimpressive.
Necker June 7th, 2003, 11:27 PM Not a great skyline for a city like St.Louis. 4/10
Fabio July 31st, 2003, 10:36 PM 7/10
the gateway arch really helps, but that's it
cincyimages August 8th, 2003, 05:50 PM St. Louis skyline is bad, but not as bad as those awful pictures you posted! LOL
http://www.nps.gov/discovery2000/reception/photos/sunset.jpg
Ashram August 8th, 2003, 07:16 PM The Arch is remarkable, everything else in the skyline isn't. 5/10
DrJoe August 23rd, 2003, 04:18 AM Wow i expected way more from St. Louis...5/10...and thats stretching it.
KCDevin August 23rd, 2003, 05:35 AM with the arch maybe a 6 or 7, without the arch, a 5.
The skyscrapers there are tall, then go down significantly in height. The city and metro is dense, but it doesnt look like the skyline is... Maybe Im seeing it wrong.
Labrador August 23rd, 2003, 10:18 AM 7/10
The arch is very intresting, and is a great focal point to the skyline.
:)
Kaneda August 23rd, 2003, 10:40 AM Actully i have never really seen any pics of St. Louis skyline. I expected much more from the city. The Arch is beautiful but the rest is nothing special. 6.5/10
Javier August 23rd, 2003, 10:25 PM Just for the arch, because the rest is normal
6.5/10
alex3000 August 27th, 2003, 11:25 PM 6/10
renell August 29th, 2003, 11:50 AM without the Gateway Arch, the St. Louis skyline would be normal NA, small, but dense in a way. 6.5/10
SUNNI August 29th, 2003, 01:45 PM i love the Arch;)
8/10
Big! October 9th, 2003, 10:57 AM Ehiiiiii
I love the Arch too!!!!!
Wisma October 10th, 2003, 04:20 PM 7/10:cheers:
Rainier Meadows October 15th, 2003, 10:25 PM 6/10 - St. Louis is not known for it's height which is unfortunate.....it's known for it's urban edge!
james2390 November 30th, 2003, 09:38 AM im visiting St. Louis rite now so i decided to rate it. if i hadnt seen it in real life i probably would have rated it at a 7.5. Its awesome though, its dense and the architecture is awesome, i rated it a 10
Tom1968 December 1st, 2003, 03:10 AM 7. (and it is generous)
dutchmetal December 1st, 2003, 05:15 PM No special scrapers or really impressive skyline. Though with the Arch it makes it a 6/10
SeeMacau December 4th, 2003, 12:54 AM The arch is great !!
Nothing really special about the skyline
7/10
ArchMadness February 29th, 2004, 11:33 PM 8/10
The arch makes the skyline. The architecture and density are also cool, but most of the buildings in town are nearly 100 years old and they are not very tall. Local law also states that nothing can be taller than the arch. (630') :moods:
Schroedinger's Cat March 7th, 2004, 05:00 PM 8/10

Agent Orange June 22nd, 2004, 01:17 AM No outstanding skyscrapers that I can see, but it does have the arch and it is relatively dense. Still, it only gets 5.5 from me.
boydaydayup June 22nd, 2004, 03:03 PM skylines... 6.5...
r2 June 28th, 2004, 10:30 PM downtown st louis to me looks like it was hit VERY heavily by early urban renewal schemes where the city was razed to the ground and new towers on megablocks were erected ... unfortunately it still looks as if half the downtown is still vacant from this action but there seems to be some activity ... the arch is stunning
mauiboy63sea July 17th, 2004, 07:14 AM The arch does help this otherwise pretty avg skyline. 5.5
rayman July 17th, 2004, 08:59 AM the arch and that baseball stadium is the only things that look nice in this city, the rest is crappy tacky boring :) 4.5 out of 10
i_am_hydrogen February 19th, 2005, 11:35 AM St. Louis's skyline doesn't look that good in pictures, but I've driven through it a lot of times and it feels cool to go through it. I like how Busch stadium is right downtown. The Arch is nice, of course. There is some moderate density.
6.0/10
MuddyZehbra32 February 20th, 2005, 10:18 PM friggin arch pisses me of...I want an arch! its just not fair!....well than again its the only thing that makes the city nice so yeh I feel the arch. (tee-hee i love how dirty that sounds) what is that building that looks like a capital building?
centralized pandemonium February 21st, 2005, 03:54 AM Cool skyline . I know the equation of the arch.BTW, 8 from me.
centralized pandemonium February 21st, 2005, 03:55 AM K, the equation of the arch is
y = -127.7cosh(x/127.7) + 757.7
moth February 21st, 2005, 04:56 PM St.Louis has a nice classic look from the east west view but needs density in the worst way. Where are all the businesses in this city going?
DarkFenX February 21st, 2005, 06:12 PM Ugh i hate the building in the last pic. I hate those kinda building. The skyline is a 5 for me.
hauntedheadnc February 22nd, 2005, 09:52 PM The arch makes the skyline, and sometimes that's enough. It's rare that a single structure can so define a place. 8.
SoboleuS March 25th, 2005, 11:45 AM The skyline deserves 7,5/10, but becuase I really like that arch, I'll give 8/10
Azn_chi_boi March 25th, 2005, 01:21 PM 8, only because of the arch
John-Claude March 25th, 2005, 03:18 PM The skyline itself is not very impressing. Only the Arch makes it look good.
6/10
Perth4life05 March 25th, 2005, 03:35 PM 9/10! something i luv about it, esp the arch!!
MattSal March 25th, 2005, 10:44 PM Very nice and homie. I give it a 7/10. :okay:
Jaybird March 27th, 2005, 01:17 AM St. Louis' skyline is nice with the arch there! Its skyline looks better than a lot of cities I have seen. Not a bad collection of buildings either 8/10.
Another one of the cities on my list to visit in my lifetime.
Valia March 27th, 2005, 05:24 AM When im a child i seen the great arc in St. Louis in a Post Card. Since then it seemed to me a great city. Now I see that it is 10/10
nimbyhater March 27th, 2005, 05:38 AM decent density... but a very boring, dull, unimpressive skyline... the arch saves your guy's asses... 4... busch stadium downtown is nice tho...
*Sweetkisses* March 29th, 2005, 02:31 AM It has a "cute" skyline
jona March 29th, 2005, 02:36 AM 8/10
stlouiscityboy April 7th, 2005, 07:38 AM I have been living in STL now for 4yrs. and this city has one of the best collection of turn of the century skyscrapers anywhere in the world. Over 150 lasttime i checked. We also have some of the first ever built over 8 floors.(Wainwright,Arcade,Paul Brown,Syindacate Trust) just to name a few. Yes most of them are under 20floors but we also have some of the best man made canyons out side of NYC and Chicago. And yes we lost alot to urban renawal but then we would not have the arch and Busch Stadium. To let evryone now Busch was the first Modern stadium to be build in the 60's and every other city in the usa copied it in the years after it was built. STL is a wonderfully old and historic city and the skyline is more then just Downtown it also heads west into Midtown,Central West End and also Clayton. And there are atleast more then 10 buildings over 30 floors.
stlouiscityboy April 8th, 2005, 03:27 AM Just look at the arch !
NewYorker75 April 8th, 2005, 03:56 AM Very boring.
Hepec April 10th, 2005, 01:01 PM OK! WHO'S THE IDIOT THAT KEEPS POSTING PICS OF ST. LOUIS FROM 90s. GIVE US SOMETHING UP-TO-DATE.
JARdan April 10th, 2005, 06:19 PM I'm going to be extremely charitable and give it a 6/10.
Nouvellecosse June 17th, 2005, 01:09 PM To me, St. Louis is like Toronto. One iconic landmark, and one sports stadium transforms it from a boring also-ran into a champion. Gorgeous! 8.5
jevinmke July 3rd, 2005, 09:19 PM Any city with an easily identifiable landmark rates high in my opinion. The arch is awesome and kinda spooky to be in.
8 out of 10.

Pruim May 5th, 2006, 04:33 PM The arch makes this skyline worthwhile. The skyline lacks a bit of scale, it long but not very wide. 6.5/10
Kiss the Rain May 6th, 2006, 10:44 AM downtown st louis to me looks like it was hit VERY heavily by early urban renewal schemes where the city was razed to the ground and new towers on megablocks were erected ... unfortunately it still looks as if half the downtown is still vacant from this action but there seems to be some activity ... the arch is stunning
Very well said, and although the downtown skyline seems really small, there seems to be lots of suburban scrapers.
Davee May 6th, 2006, 10:51 AM Lovely city. The arch is fantastic - I got brilliant views from the top of it on a magnificant spring day - so St Louis has always left a postive impression on me.
Never knock a city until you have experienced it!

denlp02 August 17th, 2006, 02:03 AM I have lived in St. Louis my entire life and after reading all of these wonderful posts, I would like to just clarify some things. First, yes...the Arch is the signature piece of St. Louis and yes...the buildings are not that tall and are not that glamorous. All of downtown seemed to be built from the 50s to the 80s. Except!.....there is A LOT of new construction going on now and there are more high rises proposed next to the NEW Busch Stadium and north of where the Rams play football. There are even rumors going around of a proposed 71 story office tower. Yes, the skyline is not SPECTACULAR, but...there is more to come to add to the density and height of the skyline.
P.S. I have seen an even better picture of St. Louis' "skyline" but from the south. In it, you can see downtown, midtown, slu, central west end, forest park, and clayton. The REAL skyline of St. Louis should be this because there are even MORE highrises being built in this area that could add to peoples perception of the city.
_zner_ August 19th, 2006, 08:37 AM 7 for the arch!

Nout November 9th, 2006, 09:06 PM The Arch is very nice, but its shape makes me think it is a half of the Mc Donalds 'M'. Skyline is ok, 7/10
Kiss the Rain November 10th, 2006, 05:25 AM The urban renewal ruined everything.
LouisvilleJake November 16th, 2006, 06:26 AM I love the National Jefferson Expansion Memorial!
The skyline is blah though. 7.5/10 because of the Arch.
08en January 14th, 2007, 03:11 AM Saint Louis has a horrible skyline for a city it's size. Mabye it's because the city is poor. Kansas City, Missouri's Skyline is about 10 times better than that craphole's skyline. If you didn't have the arch and that one metropolitan square, the skyine would REALLY SUCK. I would give it a 5/10.
Cristovão471 January 14th, 2007, 02:51 PM meh 4/10 I heard theres alot of crime there aswell
ferguz January 14th, 2007, 05:42 PM 3.5/10 i don't like the buildings and the skyline it's strange.
STLgasm January 14th, 2007, 07:36 PM Obviously many of you have never visited St. Louis. Typical postcard views don't do it justice. The skyline is much more expansive and dense than the previously-posted pictures indicate.

lbjeffries January 14th, 2007, 07:51 PM I've been to St Louis several times, and it really is that bad. Probably the worst downtown in the country for a city of it's size.
Chi649 January 14th, 2007, 08:57 PM I've been there also and it has only made me think much less of the city. I have to give it the below average rating of 4.
MDguy January 14th, 2007, 09:20 PM Probably the worst downtown in the country for a city of it's size.
Nah, Fresno is. Anyway, I like the skyline 8/10 :)
FMR-STL January 14th, 2007, 09:40 PM Beautiful Pictures of the city! I can't wait for the spring and summer shots!
:okay:
Battsman January 15th, 2007, 12:01 AM If a skyline looks good from only 1 out of every 10 angles thats not a good thing. Arch can't save this mediocre skyline. 5/10.
JivecitySTL January 15th, 2007, 12:04 AM WOw, some of you guys are very harsh. There's a lot more to a city than its skyline, and as far as skylines are concerned there are a lot worse than Saint Louis.
Llinass January 15th, 2007, 08:50 AM 7/10
08en February 16th, 2007, 02:15 AM As someone who hates St. Louis, the first time I saw it's skyline, I knew that the city sucked even worse than it already does. It's pathetic! For a metro with more than 2 million people, Kansas City (it's archrival city [that happens to be growing better than it is] across I-70 on the other side of Missouri) makes it's "skyline" look like a total joke. If there was no arch, I would give it a 3 for effort. With the arch (which I think is stupid anyway), I would give the most dangerous city in the United States a 4. There are few tall buildings there, and the city looks like Omaha or some other medium sized city. As far as those alleyway shots that someone posted to try to "redeem" Saint Louis, you only made your case worse. Those were tall buildings-- but they were crappy ones that were falling apart for poor people. I don't consider "tall" slums a very attractive part of a skyline or a downtown. I also doubt when people visit St. Louis they visit those slums you posted as part of it's skyline. And Clayton isn't even in St. Louis (obviously companies hate it's downtown so much they have to build another one a few miles away) so don't post pictures of it's skyline and claim that it's part of STL because it isn't. So all you people who live in STL and claim your skyline is "nice, you are either drunk, high or you are defending the largest getto in the US because you live there.
lammius February 17th, 2007, 04:42 AM WOw, some of you guys are very harsh. There's a lot more to a city than its skyline, and as far as skylines are concerned there are a lot worse than Saint Louis.
Of course there's more to a city than its skyline, but the whole point of this thread is for rating the skyline. STL's skyline is lacking and hence has not scored well. If STL is better at having great vibrant streetlife, create a "rate STL's streetlife" poll somewhere.
5/10. I think it'd be fun to bungee jump from the arch.

:righton:
Mr. Fusion April 2nd, 2007, 11:50 PM I was born and raised in STL and my parents and extended family continue to live there.
Though downtown is deserted during nights and weekends [reminiscent of Chicago a while back] there are signs of improvment on the horizon. The ballpark is a gem, Forest Park is very much something to be proud of, and inner city warehouses that have set vacant for decades are being converted into modern flats. The skyline continues to be a mix of gutted storage facilities attributed to its time as a river port, and 1960s-era minimalist office highrises limited in height by the Arch.
My three steps for STL urban success:
1 - For goodness sake, bury Highway 40 downtown! It has long served as a physical divider between modern downtown and a "no mans land" where tired railroad tracks trudge through a drained Chouteau Lake. New Busch Stadium is butted right up next to it, which does not help things. I have seen a gorgeous proposal to bring back the lake, take a chance and make it happen!
2 - So you bought a flat downtown... What do you do now? The city is empty when people are not working in the office buildings or taking in a game. Grocery stores, department stores, malls, bowling alleys, other hangouts and attractions etc. need to go in, and they need to be clean and free of inner city decay. If you ever want to see families downtown, you will need a few private schools.
3 - "Why did the chicken cross the Mississippi River? Oh wait he never did..." One of the more perplexing dilemmas surrounding STL is its poor sister across the river, East St. Louis. This is primo real estate literally a mile from the thousands of jobs based downtown, yet the area continues to decay into an abandoned crime-ridden ghost town. It is time for people visiting the Arch to see something worth looking at across the river, instead of a freeway stack, freight barges and the Casino Queen.
All St. Louis needs is the initiative to show investors they are not sitting on their hands waiting for someone or some company to come along and invest billions into the local economy. If they take the first step, it will pay off in the long term.
JivecitySTL April 3rd, 2007, 12:11 AM ^Good points, although I disagree with the notion that we should want to see families living downtown. Downtowns in general are not for families. Maybe to visit, but not to live in. You don't see traditional families living in most downtown environments in this country. What St. Louis and other cities like it (Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Baltimore, Detroit, Philly, etc) need to do is focus on attracting young creative types, empty nesters, childless couples, gays & lesbians, etc. It is these groups that transform urban neighborhoods. Families with children will always be attracted to suburbs until the end of time. Period.
Nice try, 08n-- everyone knows your a loser from KC with a complex. :)
Mr. Fusion April 3rd, 2007, 12:27 AM What St. Louis and other cities like it (Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Baltimore, Detroit, Philly, etc) need to do is focus on attracting young creative types, empty nesters, childless couples, gays & lesbians, etc. It is these groups that transform urban neighborhoods.
Agreed. And like I said before, this demographic will move to downtown STL if the infrastructure is there to support them.
Cities like the 'Lou need to be pro-active about recruiting small business and individuals to these urban areas. So many times we hear proposals from investors with big ideas, where the city demands commitment before the city holds up their end of the bargain. It has to work the other way around: Give people "real" reasons to make downtown their home, instead of floating promises that may or may not be kept.
nano2192 April 3rd, 2007, 03:27 AM It is nice but very little...6/5
FROM LOS ANGELES April 3rd, 2007, 09:56 AM In some angles it's preety dense, yet it needs one taller building in the center. 6.5/10

I hate when people say "without the arch it would be terrible" because the Arch IS THERE, so why count it like it isn't. i mean it is a building, that you can go up in, and it has windows, please, its definently part of the skyline. Anyway, 8.5/10

Good density, a solid pack, and decent height, although not quite tall enough for a 10. I'd think it deserves a solid 8.5 at least. The Arch is just magnificently beautiful and totally sets the skyline.

Even at it's peak in 1950, when St Louis had over 850,000 people, it had few buldings over 300 ft. tall and none over 400 ft. Today, there is a ban on anything taller than the arch.

isaidso June 3rd, 2010, 05:50 AM St. Louis had 2,828,990 people in its MSA in 2009. City populations are meaningless as they're just some political boundary that doesn't always reflect the real number of people. At 2.8 million, St. Louis is larger than Vancouver and 2.5 times the size of Calgary.
Height restrictions should simply mean that there are more buildings in St. Louis. Montreal has height restrictions and only about 1 million more people, but their downtown is massive in comparison to that of St. Louis. Still, I do think it looks good. It's just very small for 2.8 million people.

SydneyCity February 7th, 2011, 07:18 AM 6/10. The arch is nice, but for a city of it's size, St Louis' skyline is small.
desertpunk February 7th, 2011, 08:06 AM Historically, St. Louis never really had a big skyline. There was a lot of density when the city had 856,000 people but no tall towers of any note. When the Arch was constructed in 1966 it dwarfed most of what remained downtown after a decade of demolition for urban renewal. Taller buildings were built in the 1980s and '90s and if a supertall were proposed, the city might well allow it. So far, with so many of the city's major corporate headquarters located in the suburbs, that hasn't been necessary.

The skyline is disappointing for how big the St. Louis metro is. The arch is nice, and the Eagleton Courthouse is a nice building, but after that, it's pretty weak.
