Dan Hochhaus February 27th, 2009, 10:22 PM Fine that there's such a tall and elegant skyscraper right west of Grant Park now. :okay:
And btw. - I just got aware of the recladding on Mid-Continental Plaza (to the left on BVictor1's recent pics) that has started in 2008... seems like this building is supposed to lose its early-70s-look.
edit: Emporis tells about conversion to condos of upper 15 stories ("The Park Monroe"), including balconies. That could possibly yield a strange hybrid next to the Legacy.

hammrdwn510 April 2nd, 2009, 11:20 PM I worked on this building a few others on this site. I am a tech engineer for Walsh construction. I pretty much layout the building. It was a great building, I left around the 65th floor. They topped off last week iirc, wish I could have been there. I could prob get some pics from the top deck/roof once i get them.

1 June 2009
Concrete International
Making high-rise construction safer and easier
On every project, building contractors have the same concerns-keeping the schedule, dealing with the elements, protecting workers-and when the structure is a skyscraper in a busy, congested city, these concerns take on even more importance. For the builders of the Legacy at Millennium Park, a luxury condominium residence in Chicago, IL, the harsh weather and close proximity to other structures made the project particularly challenging.
When completed later this year, the 72-story tower will feature 355 apartments, along with parking, retail facilities, and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Among the building's unique features is its glass-wall architecture providing floor-to-ceiling windows in the residences and a design that curves in plan and tapers with elevation.
ENCLOSING THE WORK ENVIRONMENT
To help ease these construction challenges, Walsh Construction, contractor for the Legacy, wanted to create a closed working environment on the tower that would protect workers from Chicago's wind and ensure worker safety while maximizing production levels. Because of the building's special design features, any system used would require reconfiguration as construction progressed up the building.
Walsh Construction chose to use Xclimb 60 Protection Screens from Doka USA, Ltd. The system provides protection for the working floor and up to three floors below. The room-high enclosure provides complete protection around the accident-prone edges of the slabs where edge falsework and column-forming operations are performed.
In this safe, comfortable working environment, the workers on the Legacy project were able to move about freely without fear of falling, while being shielded from Chicago's high winds. The Xclimb 60 Protection Screen's modular panel system easily adapted to the building's challenging design and allowed work to proceed on schedule.
The following photos illustrate how this protection system was used on the project.
Selected for reader interest by the editors.
-Doka USA, Ltd.
CIRCLE 51
The versatile Xclimb 60 system can be configured as a climbing wall formwork system or the protection screen system shown in this illustration. Also shown is the integral loading platform feature. Formwork or other materials can be placed on the platform that sticks out from the face of the protection screen so the crane has access to lift the materials to the current working level
For the Legacy project, the protection screen panels were preassembled at a Doka facility to save time and reduce labor costs. The facing material can be changed to suit local conditions for the amount of protection from the elements. During warmer construction seasons, a screen material can be used to allow air flow. In this application, solid metal siding was used to provide relief from the cold temperatures and high winds prevalent during construction of this Chicago high-rise
Due to the Legacy's close proximity to other buildings and train tracks, extreme precautions were taken to safely transport material from trucks at the ground level. Because there was no room on the ground to position equipment or deliver material, a staging level was set up on the 15th floor. From this level, the Xclimb panels were easily positioned
As individual panels of the protection screen were swung into position, they were joined together using steel brackets and removable drift pins. Connecting two panels together to form a protection shield unit in this manner created a very robust, sturdy system
Once positioned, the protection screens provide a safe working environment for forming the next slab level, placing reinforcement, and placing and finishing the slab. Workers can move around freely, without the distraction of being able to see over the edge of a floor several hundred feet off the ground. After the slab is cast, the screens can be lifted to the next level using the crane or a hydraulic ram system can be used to free up crane time
After the slab gains strength, removable anchors are embedded in the concrete about 19 in. (480 mm) in from the edge of the slab to provide a connection for floor-mounted supports. These supports transfer both vertical and horizontal forces from the protection screen into the floor slabs and also guide the screen unit as it's raised from one floor to the next. Because the supports are located on three slab levels, the screens are always supported from at least two levels, even during lifting
The floor-mounted supports also form an integral part of the manually repositionable hydraulic cylinder lifting mechanism that clamps onto the vertical screen support. The mechanism at the top of the cylinder clamps onto and engages the hooked lug on the blue screen support. After lifting, the cylinder is lowered slightly so the pin on the floor-mounted support engages a hooked lug. With the floor-mounted support holding the screen, the upper mechanism can be repositioned to a lower hook, and the process is repeated in 1 ft (300 mm) increments until the screen unit has been raised to the next level. The one hydraulic unit and four hydraulic cylinders needed to raise two protection-screen units are moved to the next lifting position after the lift is complete

Onn July 26th, 2009, 06:27 AM I was in Chicago last weekend, and I think this is by far the best new addition to the skyline from the ground. This and Trump. They’re really a 1-2 punch. It's a beautiful building, Chicago needs more of these types of towers. Legacy looks even more impressive in person. :)

nomarandlee October 29th, 2009, 02:16 PM ^^ I love it and was not sure if I would like it much before it started. It perhaps is my favorite of the boom, maybe even more then Aqua.
The reverse case is with 300 N. LaSalle which I would had great anticipation about yet am somewhat disappointed by (not a bad building but not much above average either IMO).

ilovecz November 7th, 2009, 09:53 PM I also think it is more aesthetically pleasing than Aqua. It looks more high-quality and slick. Aqua looks good from certain angles, but from some other angles it looks uncomfortable. The mechanic floor is also a disaster. I can't believe they didn't think of that during designing.

Solar panels that will provide electricity for the lighting.
Ni3lS May 10th, 2010, 08:02 AM Completed? The solar panels are a cool feature.
LeMoN-SK May 10th, 2010, 12:42 PM Completed?
I think so, the exterior looks finished from all angles posted. Not sure about the base of the tower though.
Ni3lS May 11th, 2010, 04:50 AM Yea it would be great if we could get an updated picture of the base of the tower.
luci203 May 11th, 2010, 09:36 PM This building is by far the best addition Chicago has had in the past few years.
Don't know if it is the best, for sure is not by far the best.
Close race with Trump Tower and Aqua. (also good towers are 300 North LaSalle and One Museum Park)

ChitownCity May 16th, 2010, 05:57 AM Legacy is definitely my favorite even more than the trump in person ( although I do like the Trump on pictures a little bit better)
Luis87 May 16th, 2010, 08:40 PM Amazing tower. Just like Chicago style :)
Caravaggio May 16th, 2010, 09:21 PM Great building but the Prudential building is a real eye sore they should cover the exterior with glass.

khur-ehk1020_ May 31st, 2010, 02:40 PM Beautiful tower:banana::cheers:
spectre000 June 1st, 2010, 12:20 AM Sometimes I get tired of seeing so many blue glass towers everywhere. But no denying the color just works. This one looks great.
elcid1911 June 1st, 2010, 01:05 AM It actually looks a bit like Boston's Hancock Tower in the 2nd photo :)
Uaarkson June 1st, 2010, 06:03 AM I'm beginning to think this and 300 N. Lasalle are Chicago's best skyscrapers of the last decade.

Carver02 June 27th, 2010, 07:07 AM Great building but the Prudential building is a real eye sore they should cover the exterior with glass.
No, that building has class.
ChitownCity June 27th, 2010, 08:44 AM ^^^ Depends on which one you're talking about. Prudential one isn't exactly an eyesore but definitely isn't anything special. But Two Prudential is just plain sexy.

I think for such a prominent location in the Chicago skyline that mediocre buildings such as One Prudential Plaza and Mid-Continental Plaza become eyesores. This is especially true when they are juxtaposed with some very beautiful buildings. I would love to see One Prudential Plaza torn down and replaced more than any other building in the world due to its large impact on the skyline. The same goes for Mid-Continential Plaza unless they can continue renovating the entire building and finish the facade.
