Hi!

I'm going to spend a exchange semester in Germany, and I would like to know your opinion about different cities! My options are Stuttgart, Karlsruhe, Bochum and Braunschweig. What do you think that it's the best one?

I like Stuttgart, but many many people (some germans too) have told me that people in that area are very closed and narrow-minded sometimes. Is that true? I'm really interested in meeting germans because i want to improve the language. So maybe that Bochum it's a better idea in this sense.

Which city do you think that it's the best accepting foreigners? I'm italian btw.

Any other advice??

Thanks a lot for your help!

yes. on the other hand: braunschweig & bochum are not warmly to recommend.

Why not?? So ugly cities?

I'd recommend you stay as far away from the Ruhrgebiet as possible. Stuttgart's a decent city though.

Far away from the Ruhrgebiet? Why? I think there are nice cities there...

Definitly Stuttgart! Karlsruhe is not that bad at all, and just one hour from Stuttgart. But if you´re into good Nightlife and Culture, go to Stuttgart. Bochum is still better than Braunschweig, if you like run down pre-industrial cities, go there.

By the way, Stuttgart has the second most foreign populatin in Germany (25%+). You wont see too many germans here.

Sorry majecan, but this is not for you, I'm just having the same problem finding an german city to study in. Hope it is okay, that I use your thread for my question:).

Don't worry, Oelanddk. It's ok.

Well, Stuttgart it's my first option. But is it so difficult to get to know german people there? A friend of mine stayed there for one year and only got to know 2 germans! Other people tell me that they are somewhat closed...

But is it so difficult to get to know german people there? As Il fenomeno mentioned: Yes.

A friend of mine stayed there for one year and only got to know 2 germans! That´s much.

The last Italian who resigned in Stuttgart was Giuseppe Trappatoni. It wasn´t even possible to tansfer modern and progressive international training methods to Stuttgart.

Hint: Join an openminded student-club which is represented in your desired city (AEGEE, AIESEC, EMSA, ELSA, JEF and others) and/or get in contact with local student initiatives which are responsible for taking care of exchange students.
I also think it is easier to get to know german students in smaller cities. And those small cities with high numbers of students (for example Münster, Karlsruhe) surely have a decent student nightlife scene.

(ungefähr in %)

by far ze smallest of the zree, but...
its well worth a stay for a semester or two. although i wouldnt want to spend my whole life there, yu could be worse off for only half a year
karlsruhe has one of germanys best universities, lots of students, therefore lots of pubs and restaurants and decent nightlife.
the climate is also much better than in the rest of germany which contributes to a vivid streetlife and a relaxed lifestyle

not really a extraordinarily beautiful city, but definately better than bochum, not worse than stuttgart, or vice versa
beautiful castle

Wegen flashy Exzenterhaus?
