Last month, the Department of Tourism (DOT) restarted the bidding process for a new branding campaign for the Philippines. After the fiasco and millions of pesos wasted on the scuttled “Pilipinas Kay Ganda” slogan, the department, now under a new leadership, sought out fresh bids. But the bidding process failed because only one firm – BBDO Guerrero – participated. This time, however, the department expects at least seven bids.
Tourism Sec. Ramon Jimenez should reconsider going through with that. Instead, it might be better to hold a nationwide competition. The department could solicit entries, then invite people to choose (perhaps via text messaging) from among the most promising slogans submitted. This way, the department kills two birds with one stone, so to speak. The Philippines gets both a new tourism slogan as well as public approval of it.
Sec. Jimenez’s predecessor spent nearly P5 million just to launch the “Pilipinas Kay Ganda,” which replaced “Wow Philippines.” Back then, the Tourism department was also poised to spend an additional $7 million to roll out the new campaign, which included advertising. Marketing experts may consider those amounts relatively small, but that money may be enough incentive to get Filipinos excited.

MANILA, Philippines – Premiere Russian painters and graphic artists are on a 20-day cultural visit to the Philippines to paint the country’s wealth of bio-cultural diversity.
The team, led by Vladimir Anisimov, head of the Russian Bureau of Creative Expedition, first visited Vigan, Ilocus Sur, a UNESCO declared world heritage site.
The artists then went to Bohol before visiting Cebu, where they saw the historic connectivity with Europe through the galleon trade.
"We welcome the distinguished Russian artists to the Philippines and we wish them an enjoyable and pleasant stay in our beautiful country," Tourism Secretary Ramon Jimenez said in a press statement Friday.
"The Department of Tourism (DOT) is intensifying its campaign to capture the Russian tourists, which is a lucrative market for the Philippines. This year, arrivals from this market registered a 30% increase," he added.

Bosnyboy October 29th, 2011, 09:17 AM No one is denying that our country needs investors. nobody is doing that here in SSC. And no one is also saying we'll just stay with the oligarchs in the country. We need lots of investors to spurr our country's development. But in attracting investments we should also consider it's impact in our long term interest. And last i know Chinese investments are more on mining, infras, energy only. What we need are more on manufacturing investments and tourism (international hotels) and that is not China's forte imo. If China is really sincere in investing in the country they would not choose palawan only as their target. They can invest in Manila and other cities too. If they insist in Palawan there's a good reason behind that and we as citizens of our country should be concerned of.
There's nothing wrong about getting rich. I myself wanted to be as one. But for me richness without upgrading your people's inherent quality of character is useless. It's just like a poor guy who won a lotto overnight syndrome (暴發戶心態 ).
Sorry to butt in pero pwede ang investments dito sa tourism pero mfg investments in the phils medyo mahirap ata. Mahirap magsetup ng business sa pilipinas lalo na mfg, masyadong maraming redtape, plus mataas ang input like electricity plus very very poor infrastructure. A mfg company abroad who is thinking of setting up another plant in another country would seek the one with the lowest inputs like electricity and labor cost, both of which is mahal sa pilipinas plus lahat kurakot, lahat humihingi ng pera bago masetup ang business. Masyado pang mahilig magdemand ang labor force sa atin plus the pesky militants na puro extortion ang iniisip not to mention the rebel groups who ask revolutionary taxes. Its really not worth setting up a big mfg firm dito sa atin. Phils can do well in the area of services but not mfg. We dont have the basic materials needed lahat imported which jacks up cost further. Kaya maraming mfg firm sa pilipinas are now converting into trading firm, they import and sell locally because in trading you need fewer employees. Fewer employees means much much less stress and headache and more time to enjoy life. You also need less space pag trading. Saka bat ayaw na ayaw mo sa chinese investors parang may xenophobia ka ba? Our country needs foreign investors very badly like the saying goes "Beggars cant be chooser" Maswerte na ang pilipinas kung mapili ng foreigners to setup their business wag na masyadong mapili pa. Parang gusto ko tuloy ang new slogan for Philippine tourism branding as "HAPPY PHILIPPINES". Diba one of the happiest people tayo around the world. Despite the odds (literally many), it's high time to turn all those negative to positive. Motivational tool ang branding na ito. To be POSITIVE ang lahat ng Pilipino amidst everything!

Manila-X October 30th, 2011, 08:19 AM Foreign Office cautions Filipinos against travel to Bangkok

MANILA, Philippines – The Department of Foreign Affairs advised Filipinos planning to travel to Bangkok to reconsider their trips due to the flooding in the Thai capital and elsewhere in the country.
The DFA, citing a report from the Philippine Embassy in Bangkok, said travelers should seriously consider putting of their trip especially if it was “non-essential.”
“The extent of the flooding situation in Bangkok is changing very rapidly. No one is certain what would happen between today and November 1, when the flooding is expected to peak due to the high tides and the large volume of water flowing from the northern provinces through the Chao Phraya River, which is now traversing Bangkok itself,” the DFA said.
It added that top officials of Thailand have asked residents to move to higher ground in preparation for possible flooding.
Transport services have been suspended in some parts of Bangkok, the embassy said, adding that bus and train stations have been jammed by crowds of people leaving the city.
Suvarnabhumi International Airport has also been packed with people flying out of Thailand or to other provinces that are not flooded, the embassy said.
It advised Filipinos who are already in Thailand to keep a stock of food and water, keep lines of communication open, and to contact the embassy immediately if they feel that they are in danger.
The embassy said it would continue to provide assistance to Filipinos affected by the flooding in Bangkok.
Meanwhile, due to the situation in Bangkok, Philippine Arlines and Cebu Pacific announced that they were providing options for passengers with confirmed flight bookings to the flooded city.
Thai residents ride military trucks to move to higher grounds at a flooded area in Bangkok, Thailand, Saturday, Oct. 29, 2011. 2011. The complex network of flood defenses erected to shield Thailand's capital from the country's worst floods in nearly 60 years was put to the test Saturday as coastal high tides hit their peak. AP
PAL said for those with confirmed flight bookings from Manila to Bangkok covering the period October 27-November 6, tickets may be rebooked on the same class of service without penalty.
Tickets may also be rerouted, subject to collection of the difference in fare/taxes/surcharges, if applicable. Change fee/non-user’s fee shall be waived, PAL said in an advisory posted on its website.
“These options are being made available to PAL passengers in view of Bangkok’s flooding problem, which has prompted hundreds of tourists to make adjustments in their travel plans to and from the capital city,” the flag carrier said.
It stressed, however, that it continuously operates its 14 flights weekly between Manila and Bangkok.
On the other hand, Cebu Pacific said that while it continued to operate its 10 weekly flights from Manila to Bangkok and twice weekly flights from Clark to Bangkok, passengers with confirmed flight bookings to and from Bangkok from October 26 to November 2 may have the option to rebook for travel within 30 days without penalties.
“Passengers may also reroute to a different destination but subject to fare difference; or place the full value of their booking in a travel fund, for use up to 90 days,” Cebu Pacific said in an advisory.
PAL noted that the Thai government has declared a five-day holiday starting October 27 to allow residents to prepare for worse flooding.
The Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok, the country’s main international gateway, has so far been spared from flooding.

Philippines, Manila – Awfully Disappointing
By Geoffrey James Quartermaine Bastin – I honestly do really HATE to write negative posts. If you check through this blog you’ll see that even the posts on Afghanistan have a few positive things to say…
But my GOODNESS the Philippines!!! Or more precisely Manila, because you cannot and should not generalize about such a large country spread over thousands of islands. Manila – what a dump!
The city has got to be the disgrace of South-east Asia, all the more so because twenty years ago when I used to come through here en route to Papua New Guinea it was THE place in the region to come to for shopping and R&R. How the mighty are fallen!
Let’s start with the international airport. Ninoy Aquino International is exactly the same as it was all that time ago; the same awful green lino when you arrive, the same over-crowded Departure Hall, nowhere to sit if your check-in desk isn’t open. Once through security you find the same down-market shops, toilets that don’t work or are “under repair” and very few F&B places.
I pay the extra $15 to go up to the Sampaguita Lounge just to get out of the crush of people. No, despite the fact that I’m an inveterate traveler I DO NOT LIKE crowds of people! The travelling public en masse is a necessary obstacle that has to be endured and overcome.
The coffee in this over-priced lounge is awful…. Over-boiled and they don’t have a modern machines (which these days can be purchased even for home use) to produce fresh coffee from beans. NO ONE uses this old filter method anymore, at least no one that likes good coffee. Where is George Clooney!!???
As for the hotel downtown: I have stayed at the Discovery Suites in Ortigas Center for the last 15+ years ever since it opened. It used to be very good and remains convenient for my business meetings. But the owners have invested nothing in upkeep and I stay in a room that has the same furniture, same carpet as it has always had; it smells musty. The TV is years old. The water heating system provides limited hot water for my bath. My room is not cleaned until I have to go and ask. The internet (OK, free wifi in the room) is dreadfully slow and the room service food lukewarm.
Frankly at $119/night the Discovery Suites is no longer the good deal that it once was and I shall change to another hotel if I have the misfortune of coming back here.
Manila itself is a shambles. The traffic is AWFUL (I seem to be using a lot of capital letters in this post) and nothing has been added to shops or other amenities (whereas e.g. Bangkok has transformed itself into an almost livable city).
Look: people will say the Filipino people are nice, and indeed they are polite – we Brits might say “smarmy” – obsequious or ingratiating are maybe less pleasant words. But they do try. That does take the edge off the sheer misery of a crumbling, filthy, depressing city and an economy that exists only on the remittances of the smart ones who have left.
Sorry folks. I know there are many people who love the Philippines, but its economic development has been a disaster; the irony is that Manila is the headquarters of the Asian Development Bank (the reason I come here) and it has the WORST growth history of any of the ASEAN countries – Cambodia which was torn apart by civil war up until 1997 has a first-class airport (fresh ham and cheese sandwiches on foccacia, freshly brewed cappuccino , clean lounges) and some great restaurant food and hotels (see my next post). But the Manila, where the intelligentsia sneer at their Asian brothers and sisters for their lack of English, is beaten hands down even by little Phnom Penh and left standing by every other mega-city in the region.
There seems to be a theme here: the Philippines has many natural advantages and in fact a talented people who provide services everywhere in the world. But there has been no re-investment in the country, neither by the public sector (hence the terrible airport facilities), nor by private industry. People might build a hotel, but they run it into the ground rather than trying to build a long-term institution. Philippines can be described as an extractive or exploitive economy, not one where people want to build sustainably long term. As I say, the smart one’s all want to leave.
My suggestion if you want to see the Philippines: get through Manila as quickly as you can, it has nothing to recommend it. Go out to the islands, Cebu, Mindanao, up to the cool of Bagio and see the people in the countryside and some of the spectacular scenery. That’s probably worth the trip. Otherwise pick almost anywhere else in Asia and you’ll get a better deal.
Final note: for those that wonder, I’m NOT backpacker and I’ve travelled so much that the novelty or “exciting local colour” of dirt, disease and bad food no longer fills me with wonderment; I stay in decent hotels and expect good service, anything less is patronizing the people in these emerging countries. For most of Asia I get it in spades – better value overall than travelling in North America or Europe – but not the Philippines.
For the Philippines the question is surely will it ever emerge from the mire into which it has sunk? Very frankly based on my very long experience of the place I really doubt it, in fact it is a “disappearing” country if there is such a thing.

One thing I don't agree with this blog posting that he is saying that nothing worth photographing in Manila. Maybe this blog writer is just a typical casual snap & shoot traveler. But one thing I can be sure of "Manila" is consider to be photojournalist & travel photographer haven for subject matter interest. So many variety subject to shoot at.
RonnieR November 2nd, 2011, 11:57 AM ^^ Well, there are thousands if not millions of blogs who hate or dislike this great country. Need to rub it more? There are many underlying reasons why the traveler is disappointed with a place. The best offense for that is: just let him express what he felt, it's a free world, after all. Focus on the positive and we are seeing it in the tourism industry. Latest figure is +11% increase in foreign tourists arrival vs. year ago.
Remember that French tourist who went wild at the airport last month because his Filipina girlfriend didn't meet him? He was shouting invectives against the Filipinos, this country, etc. etc. He even smashed his SLR camera, netbook and cursed the Filipinos!
RonnieR November 2nd, 2011, 11:58 AM DOT: HK travel agents want PHL travel ban lifted
11/02/2011 | 03:38 PM
Over a year after the Manila hostage tragedy, many Hong Kong travel agents want their government to lift or at least downgrade its black travel warning on the Philippines, the Department of Tourism (DOT) said Wednesday.
This was found out by a Philippine delegation after flying to Hong Kong and Macau and asked travel agents to push for Philippine tourism, the DOT said.
“Many of the agents said that they remain confident and optimistic about tourism in the Philippines and that they will go full blast with their promotions once the alert is lifted," the DOT said in a news release.
The delegation stayed in Hong Kong from October 19 to 21

boypad November 2nd, 2011, 12:01 PM DOT, JICA team up on tourism statistics
(The Philippine Star) Updated November 02, 2011 12:00 AM
“Accurate information about the state of our industry is very important to guide government, private sector and foreign investors in planning out investments. With this, we hope to develop and strengthen institutional mechanisms at the national, regional and local levels to support the generation of the statistics needed by both government and the private sector,” said Tourism Secretary Ramon R. Jimenez Jr.
The project, which will be completed in March 2012, will produce as final outputs the publication of a Tourism Statistics Report, as well as training modules and a revised Tourism Statistics Manual for LGUs. A culminating activity, the National Tourism Conference, is scheduled early next year to highlight best practices among LGUs in the collection and compilation of tourism statistics.

Ganyan talaga and manga expats na base in Thailand. Anti Philippines sila. Quatermain is based in Thailand married to a local girl. Kasi Thailand at saka Pilipinas pareho ang tourism product - beaches , catholic - buddhism . Ayam nila ang competition. In fact South east asian countries ini snub ang Pilipinas. Gusto nila, kayong manga pilipino na mag holiday sa Bangkok, Singapore, Hongkong, KL etc pero sila ayam nilang mag holiday dito sa Pilipinas. Suplado talaga ang manga neighbours natin.
Be positive, post http://philippines.forumsland.com/philippines-about2-0-asc-0.html on facebook, Twitter etc spread the philippine tourism campaign.
Kulang nang exposure ang Pilipinas.
pau_p1 November 3rd, 2011, 03:30 AM well I guess he just just stayed in Ortigas Center and didn't bother going to the tourist spots in Manila itself since I guess he has visited it in his past visit which seemed pleasant then...
and yeah he seemed a bit irate in Discovery Suites... and well he did point out the problematic items in Manila which is true but backpackers or holiday visitors don't find it a big problem unlike him which is visiting for business only...

She left in unrelated references to people (fishpan people) and personal opinions on dishes that I wrote and which are repeated on the DOT website. And at the bottom of the page, the DOT claims copyright over the material published on the page. Do they even know what that means??? Is there no shame? Are people really so damn lazy? Don’t they have any self respect? Are they going to claim they didn’t think there was anything wrong with this???
This is absurd. Let’s consider for a moment the best possible answer, that the writer, a Ms. trinadelro, had asked for and was granted written permission to use the article for the Department of Tourism website. This is not impossible, as I grant such permission often, as long as readers write in and formally ask, and it is for a non-commercial purpose, but I ALWAYS INSIST on PROPER ATTRIBUTION and a LINK BACK to the original material. So EVEN if Ms. trinadelro can show that she sought and received permission from me, there is no proper attribution and no link back to the original article, so the permission is null and void. Worse, the article clearly appears under the byline of Ms. trinadelro, and entitled “Review by trinadelro on Top Ten Foods”. She also has the temerity to title it further by saying “I AM DOING THIS FROM 10 to 1″ — which is exactly the way it appeared in my blog.

Tourism Secretary Ramon Jimenez on Thursday issued a warning about plagiarism to the agency’s employees, a day after a food blogger accused the department of copying his article word for word for a write-up posted on its website.
“Please always be circumspect and exercise due diligence in the drafting or writing of DOT (Department of Tourism) articles, communications, write-ups and the like either on the internet or on hard copy," Jimenez said in a memorandum to all of the department’s offices.
He reminded the department’s employees of sanctions for plagiarism and copyright infringement as stipulated in Republic Act 8293 or the Intellectual Property Code of the Philippines.

by: Jamie Marie Elona | INQUIRER.net 3:39 pm | Thursday, November 3rd, 2011
RETIREMENT HAVEN. Vice Jejomar Binay hopes to make the Philippines the retirement haven of Southeast Asia and believes this can ben done by boosting tourism and real estate in the country.
MANILA, Philippines—At the recent 20th national convention of the Chamber of Real Estate and Builders Association (CREBA), industry leaders stressed the importance of the synergy between the real estate industry and tourism, whose growth naturally spurs the construction subsector.
In his speech during the first day of the convention at the Marriott Hotel in Pasay City, Jejomar Binay, vice president and chairman of the Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council, said these two industries are indeed synergetic, stressing that tourism has partly been fueling since late 2004 the demand for residential condominiums and resort-style houses, hotels, resorts, wellness centers and retirement villages.
It is therefore important that these two industries “should create an effective synergy that will tap the opportunities…,” Binay stressed.

Anger at airport after mourner refused entry
Mary Ann Benitez
Friday, November 04, 2011
A retired Filipino seaman got the shock of his life when he was denied entry to Hong Kong, after being told that coming here to attend the funeral of a loved one is not a valid reason for a visa.
Philippine passport holders who visit the SAR are usually granted a 14-day visa-free stay.
But in 60-year-old Pepito Mamaril's case, he was instead held at Chep Lap Kok airport and sent back to the Philippines within hours of his arrival.
The incident is raising concern as a government source said it lacks sensitivity and is not related to any recent political issue.
Mamaril, 60, flew in last Wednesday to attend the funeral and wake of his sister-in-law, Emma Mamaril, a longtime permanent resident who was married to his elder brother, Fortunato.
But he was detained in an airport holding cell for hours and refused a visa before being put back on an evening return flight the same day.
A government source said Mamaril was denied entry because the purpose of his visit was doubtful.
The Immigration Department, meanwhile, will not comment on any individual case, but stressed officers are responsible for maintaining "effective immigration control."
Mary Ann Mamaril-Sparrow said her uncle was the only relative from the Philippines able to attend the wake and cremation last weekend of her 65-year- old mother, who died after a lengthy illness.

I'm surprised with this because why he was denied entry to the territory. And also why he was denied visa the fact every Filipino passport holder can visit HK and stay there without a VISA for 14 days.
It is actually a violation of his rights or our rights if anyone here is refused entry to the territory.
But again, there are reasonable answers for the immigration officer like the amount of cash the deportee was holding. And P500 is definitely not enough for HK unless he can withdraw money in an ATM machine there.

I am also disturbed by the incident. Probably, the Immigration Officer based his decision on the amount of cash that he has in his wallet or it could be his physical appearance. For a 60 year old retired seaman, it is traumatic.

There are also factors like if he has a criminal record or if he also has a return ticket back to The Philippines. These are factors not listed in the article.
And of course you cannot lie if you have.
For the immigration officers, they are simply doing their jobs, the fact there are people who overstay in the territory.

Budji Layug, Royal Pineda and Kenneth Cobonpue are teaming up to give the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 1 a facelift.
The proposed rehabilitation—still a proposal to be approved by the Aquino government—will transform the 30-year-old Ninoy Aquino International Airport into a boutique airport, boutique not so much for its modest size as for its distinct atmosphere of civility and expedience.
The proposal calls for refurbishing the facilities, decongesting, developing a park and enhancing the retail environment. It also calls for Naia to work equally hard on the software, the service.

Malacañang has earmarked P25 million for the refurbishing of historical facilities in Corregidor due to the rising number of tourists arriving in the island, according to Budget Secretary Florencio B. Abad.
“The Aquino administration recognizes the importance of preserving historical sites like Corregidor,” Abad said. “Apart from preserving our cultural heritage, this also supports our bid to boost tourism in the country.”
Also known as “The Rock,” Corregidor symbolizes for many the courage, valor and heroism of Filipino soldiers who fought side by side with the Americans during World War II.
“That is certainly a cultural heritage that we would want to preserve and showcase to the world,” the budget chief said.

Patrio-tourism
The answer does not lie in foreigners, but in us. We will never achieve a quantum leap of growth in foreign tourists or dollar receipts without first achieving a quantum leap in our patriotism and love for our countrymen. We cannot expect to attract foreign visitors to our country if we ourselves continue to leave our country in droves.
Before we expect others to fall in love with our country, we must first rekindle our love for her. This is a must to the success of any human endeavor. No one can sell what he or she does not love.
We need to engender a sense of patriotism among our ourselves, our families and our own countrymen. Patriotism will motivate us to invest in the “HEARTS” of successful tourism – Hospitality and Hotels + Enjoyable Experiences + Airports and Airplanes + Roads and RORO Bridges + Tour Packages and clean Toilets + Safety and Security.

WITH only three days left before the voting process ends, the Puerto Princesa Underground River has made it to the final list of 10 contenders for the New 7 Wonders of Nature. Organizers said the competition is tough for the top seven.
The list of world’s 28 top natural sites is being trimmed down to seven in a global voting that is expected to draw more than a billion participants.
The quest for the final winners—to be known as the New 7 Wonders of Nature—ends on midnight Thursday; the final declaration of the winners will be made the following day.
Besides the Puerto Princesa Underground River, the other sites that made the shortlist in alphabetical order are: the Dead Sea, the Grand Canyon, the Great Barrier Reef, Halong Bay, Jeita Grotto, Jeju Island, Komodo Island, Sundarbans and Vesuvius. Puerto Princesa City Tourism Officer Rebecca Labit said the country is doing its utmost to urge Filipinos in the country and abroad to vote “aggressively” in the last few days.

However, I have one comment on the lamp post. The base is somewhat "off". Maybe the city officials have other reason for that.

That's right. The convenience and access to different points of interests are major factors why this premier city continues to attract visitors.

^^ I read that the power/telephone lines will be put "underground". That's a very good move for Cebu City.
i guess its impossible to bury it underground esp. if its just along that stretch. All these cable lines are all connected with each other. Every corner and block, its all connected so if you place just those cable lines along the Osmena Blvd stretch beneath the ground, then might as well include other cable lines connected to it underground. The way I see it, they will just keep those wires look neat and clean anyways, those trees lining along the road will cover it in most parts. :)

I rather have that center portion without trees to showcase the statue in the middle of it, they have to keep the green grass and start a beautiful landscape. I think those trees should be confined across the street down where the pedestrian sidewalk is. You can hardly see the statue in the middle because of those trees. If they really prefer some trees around it, a few palm trees similar you see in Dubai or even Hawaii would be perfect for it.
bakasaurus November 8th, 2011, 05:43 PM They should probably paint those lamp bases with the same dark color as the lamp post itself so it would visually cohese with the whole lamp, IMHO.

If you cut trees within Fuente Rotunda, everyone will criticize you coz most of the trees are witnesses of the old times of Fuente area. Cutting them just for the monument (which is btw can be found in the old P50 bill) to be seen from afar cannot be accepted by most people.

Mercato November 9th, 2011, 12:59 AM ^^ It seems to be true, I mean I could feel the immediate effect. On any given afternoon, I can feel the difference when walking on exposed areas of the adjacent East Coast Park (hence the name ECP highway) like along the beach or the grassy playgrounds - the tropical heat is like, wow. But if I walk under that shady boulevard, the heat tapers off significantly. The same effect goes if I'm in a car (with the aircon turned off and windows down) and we pass underneath that canopy.

True! IMO, trees inside the Fuente Circle need not to be torn down because the fountain itself isn't that big enough to be seen from afar. Fuente Circle was designed to be a 'park' not a 'monument' an 'obelisk' or a 'statue' in the first place. :)

Not only that, the leaves of the trees also absorb noise pollution and air pollution. This is the very reason why highways' and roads' sides are planted with trees. In Europe there was a proposal to build glass-made walls at the wayside to trap noise. Of course, people prefer trees.

I say, remove the fountain and make the fuente monument bigger and taller to make it more grandiose. Perhaps as tall as the washington monument. :)

Worse are those indian trees that aren't even beautiful and don't even serve the purpose of providing shade as they just grow straight up. I say leave the Fuente circle alone ( even better plant more flowering and broad canopy trees) and remove those Indian trees that line up the island from Fuente to the Capitol. This way one can see the Capitol from Fuente without any visual obstruction and the avenue and the Capitol itself would even seem grander.

I feel duped when people plant palm trees around an establishment and describe it as "LUSH" My sentiments exactly. Although admittedly, coconut trees do abound in the country; but that is only if we wish our inner cities to resemble a beach minus the blue sea & white sands. Some even wish to plant Arab date palms. But to be authentic we have to sandblast the surrounding areas with desert sands to emulate the Dubai or Abu Dhabi look.
I had seen highways in Malaysia & Singapore planted on both sides with huge indigenous southeast asian tropical trees and they fulfill their roles quite well. They are not after a "gardeny" look but they are after that really lush tropical jungle look worthy of a Night Safari. ;) Worse are those indian trees that aren't even beautiful and don't even serve the purpose of providing shade as they just grow straight up. @riain: stunning photos indeed!Indian trees need to go. I was wondering about the wisdom of quite a few of our campesinos who seemed bent on ringing our city with palms? To what effect would that accomplish, perhaps only another unwise version of the misplaced Indian trees? ;)
Offhand, Apart from the Acacia Tree I can easily think of 2 other tropical trees which would suit our needs for leafy shady trees. The Narra and the Balete (Ficus). Mango Avenue should be replanted with real large Cebu Mango Trees. ;) And since I hear it is now an avenue of bars, the large mango trees should be adorned with capiz shell lanterns to light up the whole place.

slerz November 9th, 2011, 11:43 AM ^^madumi tingnan IMO kung pipinturahan ang mga trees. Parang ring tao na pininturahan mo. Natural color of trees are far beautiful than those painted trees...
True! IMO, trees inside the Fuente Circle need not to be torn down because the fountain itself isn't that big enough to be seen from afar. Fuente Circle was designed to be a 'park' not a 'monument' an 'obelisk' or a 'statue' in the first place. :)

I kinda like the proposed upgrade of Fuente Circle though. They just enhanced the park into something more modern and clean. I love the central art where the fountain is and also how those trees are arranged. beautiful! :okay:
you can appreciate the beauty of Fuente circle onboard the edge coaster or the skywalk of Crown Regency :D

mwg12a November 10th, 2011, 02:24 AM If you cut trees within Fuente Rotunda, everyone will criticize you coz most of the trees are witnesses of the old times of Fuente area. Cutting them just for the monument (which is btw can be found in the old P50 bill) to be seen from afar cannot be accepted by most people.
Oh really? Then maybe just minimize it somehow. I did see the rendering of what the plan would be, they seems to be minimizing the amount of trees there os that would be good enough.

mwg12a November 10th, 2011, 08:04 AM Yes I agree but the trees are necessary for a tropical city.
I say, remove the fountain and make the fuente monument bigger and taller to make it more grandiose. Perhaps as tall as the washington monument. :)
I really didn't say remove all the trees at all, they do need to leave some of it there, but just to decrease some of it and then plant trees across the street down at the sidewalks infront of the establishments around the circle.

Photographers raise their cameras in front of Dr. Jose Rizal Monument in Manila Friday to protest a “no-photo shooting” policy in front of the monument. NINO JESUS ORBETA/INQUIRER
MANILA, Philippines—Some 100 amateur and professional photographers staged a “photo-walk” Friday morning to dramatize their protest of what they alleged was discrimination against Filipinos taking pictures of the Rizal monument at Manila’s Rizal Park or Luneta.
The newly formed group Bawal Mag-Shoot Dito (BMSD) is an organization of camera enthusiasts who found a common pet-peeve: overzealous security guards preventing them from taking pictures of the Rizal monument.
Bernard Mejias, a spokesman for the group who has been into professional photography for 20 years, told the Inquirer that the BMSD only seeks to ask why local photographers are banned from shooting the Rizal monument while foreigners are not.
“Isn’t that a double standard?” he pointed out, adding that it was ridiculous that he and other photographers who pay taxes cannot shoot at a public place.
Marching to the Rizal monument at 11 am, the group unfurled streamers and broke through the cordons set up around the monument and ignored security guards trying to block their path.
When the chief of security tried to snatch away their streamer, the photographers fended him off and asked him instead in chorus, “Bakit bawal?” (Why is it prohibited?)
The question visibly left a blank look on the security man who simply responded, “It just is so.”
After taking pictures at the Rizal monument, the group proceeded to Intramuros to continue their photo walk.

You mean tourists are now allowed to row their boats inside the subterranian river? That's something new to me! We were just taking a ride when we made our tour before! The underground river authorities assigns a tour guide/rower in every boat there, AFAIK.

I actually voted most of that you mentioned except The Great Barrier Reef.
The other is questionable in how some of the sites that won are significant?
Also there might be other that will question why PPUR made it to the finalist.
The fact it is an online voting so it is a matter of popularity especially those the citizens of the countries where these wonders are home to.

This is what makes PPUR significant

I voted for the Great Barrier Reef because its the largest organism on the planet. It's like our Tubbataha and equally significant in the world's marine ecosystem. It's the only living thing that can be seen from space.
I dont see any significance in some of the other sites at all. I agree with the Amazon however.

Camiguin IS the most heavily volcanic island in the world. That's proven.
the island has the most number of volcanoes per square kilometer than any other island in the world – as it is more evident in the fact that there are more volcanoes (7) than towns (5) with more than 20 cinder cones over 1000 meters with the active stratovolcano Mount Hibok-hibok (1,552 metres) as the most prominent. Aside from Hibok-hibok and Vulcan, there is also Mambajao, Ginsiliban, Uhay, Carling, and Tibane as well as the hills of Campana, Minokol, Tres Marias and Piyakong where there are also domes and cones – put them together in a tiny island and you have the most extensively volcanic island in the world.
Size do not exactly matter, my point is whether it is significant enough to be included as top 7 world wonder. I made the Capones comparison because the topography is similar, I wasn't talking about the area.
Lord Howe Island in Australia is also similar with Jeju. So that makes Jeju nothing special.

Manila-X November 12th, 2011, 07:24 AM Photographers snap at Rizal Park execs for ‘no-shoot’ rule

What would Jose Rizal—who loved being photographed—make of the uproar over taking photos near his monument at Luneta?
More than 100 photographers on Friday marched to Manila’s Rizal Park to denounce a policy by park custodians requiring commercial photographers to pay fees if they want to shoot pictures in the park, and also protest against supposed discrimination against Filipino photo-shooters.
Bernard Mejias, a spokesperson for the group Bawal Mag-Shoot Dito, told the Inquirer his group wanted to ask why Filipino photographers were banned from shooting the Rizal Monument but foreigners purportedly were not.
“Isn’t that double standard?” Mejias said, adding it was ridiculous that he and other photographers, who pay taxes, were prevented from taking pictures of a public place.
“This has been a problem for us for a very long time. Every time we shoot (at the Rizal Monument), we are shooed away,” Mejias said. “We are taxpayers. Why should we not be able to use a public place? The policy needs to be explained.”
The group also complained that its members were being harassed by guards hired by the Department of Tourism and forbidden to take pictures not only in Rizal Park but also in Intramuros, which are public places.
“How can we promote Rizal Park and Intramuros when we are being forbidden from shooting? How can we put them in our exhibits and on the Internet?” said Mel Cortez, another group member.
“Are people being accosted and prevented from taking pictures at the Eiffel Tower and the Statue of Liberty?”
Money for treasury
Tourism officials said fees were being collected at Rizal Park and Intramuros only from those who shoot photos for commercial purposes.
“There’s no fee when you just take a picture for your personal use. In fact, we encourage park visitors to take pictures as a way of promoting Rizal Park,” said Kenneth
Montegrande, information officer of the National Park Development Council (NPDC), which oversees the park.
According to Montegrande, the minimum fee collected for a permit for commercial photography in Rizal Park is P1,000, which is good for four hours of shooting. The fees go to the National Treasury and are covered by receipts, he said.
He said the permit system for commercial photographers were “for their own protection” and that the permit would also help the shooters since security personnel could be assigned to protect them against inconveniences and from thefts.
Rizal loved photos
Montegrande said shooters accosted by guards were only those “obviously” taking pictures for commercial purposes, such as those with tripods and lighting equipment.
Cortez, however, said even photo hobbyists with digital and single-lens reflex (SLR) cameras were being accosted.
It seems ironic that at the center of the squabble is a man who, according to some historians, loved to have his picture taken.
Rizal left behind a wealth of pictures taken from the time he was a teenaged student to the day he was shot by a firing squad in Bagumbayan—now Rizal Park—in 1896 when he was 35 years old.
A staffer at the Intramuros Administration (IA) said the agency collected fees of up to as much as P2,000 from commercial photographers taking pictures around Intramuros.
Mostly they shoot for wedding themes.
Fashion-related and advertising shoots, however, carry charges of as high as P12,000, according to one staffer.
Monuments are for all
Cortez, however, said the photo permits should not cover shots taken in parks, walls, ruins and other public areas of Intramuros.
“The IA and the NPDC do not own Intramuros and Rizal Park. As national monuments, they are part of the national heritage—they belong to all Filipinos,” Cortez said.
Mejias said the Rizal Monument symbolized freedom and nationalism. “Our pictures will help promote the country and boost tourism. Where is the harm in that?”
“This is our form of silent protest,” he said.
Shouting match
But the group’s march to the Rizal Monument was not as silent as members would have wanted it to be. At one point, it turned into a shouting match with security personnel.
As the group unfurled streamers which read, “Bawal Mag-Shoot Dito (Shooting pictures prohibited here). Only in the Philippines,” five security guards attempted to break off the gathering, shouting at them to stop.
The security shift in charge, who introduced himself as Mads Carino, tried to snatch away the streamer, saying the protesters were conducting a prohibited activity.
The protesters asked him in chorus, “Bakit bawal?(Why is it prohibited?),” to which he shouted back, “It just is.”

This law will license anybody to use their registered film or digital slr camera to take picture in both public and private place around Philippines. Another thing before you are allow to get a camera license you need to complete a 5 days course in basic photography in any accredited gov't. training center. So no license no picture.

Same with Makati and Ortigas.
But in LA, I was harassed by security for taking photo of The US Bank Tower.
Again, this should be a issue because we have right to take photos of our country's sites without being harassed.
Askal82 November 12th, 2011, 04:15 PM It's a public park, maintained by taxes. Anong nag iinarte sila dyan. Pera pera talaga yan. Gusto makakomisyon. One of the reasons why Carlos stopped the Binondo/Quiapo tours, kasi gustong magkumisyon ang mga bata ni Mayor Lim. :ohno::ohno::ohno:
Yes, I definitely agree. gusto lang makakomisyon ng mga yan. nakakakainis.
That's terrible. So the lessons learned is that if you're planning to shoot at these places using your slr, always be in big groups so you have more chances of taking pictures just in case the guard photobombed one of yours.
^^ Mainit kasi sa mata ng mga security guard if you carry around big camera such as dslr. Pero if instamatic camera yun small size kahit local ka pwede naman. This rule is almost apply to any places sa pinas whether in public or private area.
Laging dahilan nila for security reason baka gamitin for terrorist act yun photo... he..he..
A dslr cam is too obvious for the terrorists to use. I bet they are more likely to use camphones instead with high res camera.
Perseus II November 13th, 2011, 01:52 AM BAWAL MAG SHOOT DITO-Only in the Philippines
https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=2451512121643
This is what transpired yesterday 11-11-11 during the BMSD photo walk. Kayo na ang maghusga kung tama ba na bawal magshoot sa Rizal Park and to other public places.
^^ dapat tagline ng DOT ay: Philippines - Leave your cameras behind
^^ Matagal na talagang bawal mag photo shoot sa Luneta if your using a SLR without park permit. The best way to take a picture there is to use a Panasonic Lumix camera. Ang image quality just like a DSLR but look's a point & shoot camera.
Eto yun mga list of place bawal mag-take ng picture using your DSLR.
a. Intramuros
b. Luneta
c. MOA
d. Halos all SM, Ayala at Robinson Mall
e. Ayala Center
f. LRT/MRT
g. FBGC
h. Fort Santiago
i. Ortigas Center
j. High end hotel
k. Gimmick club
Same with Quiapo Church. All my shots of the church exterior were deleted
because sabi bawal daw kuhanan ng picture :ohno:
Perseus II November 13th, 2011, 02:30 AM There is also a highway in San Fernando, Pampanga that looks like the above. You will pass this road if you go to Angeles City.

naalala ko tuloy itong daanan na ito... parang may tunneling effect dahil sa korte ng puno...
ito ba yung papuntang carabao center at CLSU?
No. This is the national highway from San Fernando, Pampanga going to Angeles City.
!
Wala na halos ang mga punong yan sir ronnie :ohno: The national road in San Fernando was widened and rehabilitated so most of the trees were balled out.
I dont know if they were replanted somewhere else but I dont think those trees even survived. :ohno:
the tree-huggers did their best to save the trees but it was in vain :ohno:
even Jamby and Loren failed to save the trees :ohno:
Meron pa namang natitira pero konti na lang :ohno:

^^ Almost all places in M. Manila both public and business district area as mention earlier in this post are not SLR friendly. But if you go out outside M. Manila specially in provincial area its camera friendly.
No wonder most international family tourist prefer to stay outside M. Manila since most of them are more familiar in those images taken from provincial area.
hakz2007 November 13th, 2011, 04:13 AM 'Only 1 out of 10 Phl towns has tourism officer'
CLARK FREEPORT ZONE – Only one municipality out of every 10 towns in the country has a tourism officer to handle tourism promotions in their localities, according to the Association of Tourism Officers of the Philippines (ATOP).
ATOP believes the non-appointment of tourism officers in local government units (LGUs) violates the Tourism Act of 2009 and affects tourism growth in the country. Read more (http://www.philstar.com/Article.aspx?articleId=747593&publicationSubCategoryId=63)

a. Intramuros
h. Fort Santiago
I've just been there last week, di naman bawal gumamit ng DSLR. kahit sa National Museum di rin bawal. pero seriously, bakit naman kaya binabawal? these are tourist spots, marami talagang nagdadala ng camera to these places. kakalurkey.
rawr November 13th, 2011, 04:44 AM ^^ SLR lang naman ang bawal....kung ordinaryong digi cam pwede.
Manila-X November 13th, 2011, 04:52 AM Unfortunately, it takes an SLR camera to take most of the good photos.
boypad November 13th, 2011, 06:25 AM ^^ Speaking of good photo. You don't need a DSLR to produce a good photograph. What it really take is a good composition, subject and lighting. There are some world reknown photographer specially in the field of fashion photography that even use point-and-shoot camera as their gear.
Most often I saw a lot of those slr poser taking along with them their latest dslr taking any subject. But the funny thing if you look closely their camera setting is just tuned in to "P" or automatic setting. Ha..ha...
Maybe the next best thing if you're really into "photo snapper" person and don't want to have a hassle on taking image on public places. Buy your self a power series Canon camera or a Panasonic Lumix camera, its a best of both worlds

I'm very happy that PPUR is in the list but not fully satisfied because Grand Canyon is not the list. :)

Sad...it was a beautiful sight in the area. I use NLEX na from San Fernando to Angeles.

There are lots of natural wonders that are not included in the list. But again, it is by people's votes especially with some of them voting based on the country where these wonders are located.
