MORE than 1,000 Chinese tourists are expected to arrive in Cebu this week to join the Chinese New Year festivities in the city and province.

They started arriving last Tuesday via a chartered Cathay Pacific flight.

...

The tourists will also engage in sightseeing, shopping and beach activities.

“We are helping the tourism sector by bringing Chinese tourists in the country,” said Dino, who welcomed the guests at the Mactan Cebu International Airport last Tuesday.

The tourists will be staying in major hotels and resorts such as the Marco Polo Plaza, Hotel Elizabeth, Radisson Blu Hotel, Shangri-La Mactan Resort and Spa, Imperial Palace Waterpark and Spa, and the Movenpick Resort and Spa in the next four to five days.

...

“We have to do something about it,” he said. “Though we are slowly recovering, tourism players must do something more aggressive and create more activities for the Chinese tourists.”

Dino said the leisure company has been avidly promoting Cebu in Hong Kong and other locations in mainland China.

“We are optimistic that we will be able to deliver what we promised to our guests,” he said.

I do travel to Baguio often and do not pay attention to it the fact they existed. And I'm sure a lot of travelers both local or foreign feel the same!

Baguio people saw the benefits of that mall and expansion is very much welcome in the city. Only the environmentalists are against the expansion owing to the "balling" of trees.

Baguio City is still a nice place for me. Temperature in the city at this time ranges from 14 to 20 degrees c.

It is still popular with Korean tourists. In NEVADA (place like Metrowalk Ortigas, rows of bars and restaurants), the bars there are full of Koreans at night! Thanks to these people - for their contribution to the city.

^^ So for people who are in Baguio, are they for or against the expansion of SM Baguio.

It's 50/50.

There were residents and business owners who resent the construction of SM in Baguio due to fear that it will kill business especially along Session Road. But that did not happen.

The expansion, I don't know!

^^ Looks like Sy is bent on turning the country into a mall country.

Even before SM, smaller malls and department stores existed in other Philippine cities especially in those untouched by the grand malls say SM, Robinsons, Gaisano, etc.

Baguio before SM had its own local malls or department stores but most products that you can buy were limited.

But what SM brought were more choices and a better shopping environment.

Personally I do not even go around SM when I'm in Baguio. I only park my car there and then venture out in Session Road.

Ady001

^^ I have to agree with you with the better shopping environment, though I hope it doesn't compromise our environment. Still, I hope for all the best for the venture and how environmentalists will churn this out. Felt like Wednesday's BMOB day was a bit of a scam for me.

Before SM malls and other commercial centres in Baguio look drab or ordinary. Kinda like the former Ever Emporium in Caloocan, Star Malls or those department stores that you can find in Quiapo.

(Sorry if we go too much on OT mods, I think mall architecture and sightseeing can be considered tourism of some sorts for urbanites.)

January 26th, 2012, 08:24 AM
Other than that SM also have stores that sell local souvenirs though are more expensive compared to areas like Session Road or Mines View Park.

BTW, one thing I noticed in Baguio other than Koreans are the number of Western backpackers in the city especially those heading to Banaue or Sagada.

Japanese investor breaks ground at Bagong Nayong Pilipino

The fourth major investor in the Bagong Nayong Pilipino entertainment complex forged ahead with a $2-billion integrated resort project Thursday on a 45-hectare site at the Manila Bay Reclaimed Area, saying that the venture will create 15,000 jobs.

Japan-based Universal Entertainment Corp. noted its Manila Bay Resorts venture will become “the next major world-class entertainment, shopping and gaming destination in Asia.”

Its subsidiary, Tiger Resorts, Leisure and Entertainment Inc., said construction will commence next February while the formal opening is expected in the third quarter of 2014.

“The entertainment complex will have two luxury casino hotels hosting 450 and 600 rooms, respectively... A 1000-room budget hotel will also be put up within the resort, targeting to reach a wider market,” the resort developer said.

Speaking through an interpreter, Universal Entertainment chair Kazuo Okada said construction will start with the large-scale water fountain and then progress to the other components, including an indoor beach club encased under a huge glass dome. The complex will also have high-end fashion boutiques and outlet malls.

“Manila Bay Resorts seeks to attract business travelers and tourists from all over Asia especially the Chinese market,” according to Tiger Resorts. The tourism markets of Japan, South Korea, Singapore and Hong Kong were also eyed.

You are entitled to your opinion, but can you explain further.

Is it because of the overcrowded, chaotic and unmitigated growth of the city?

Yes! I am still amaze and mezmerize with the beauty of our country everytime I get to visit places on backpacking. Try to go out of your fence and hop around the 7,107 islands of the Philippines. Only a blind person will not be able to see and appreciate the abundance of beauty in this country. I haven't seen "urban planning" followed faithfully in our country (if that ever existed). If somebody disagrees, all one needs is to look at the pictures again. It's not just Baguio, you see them all around the Philippines. We've seen in in CDO lately, Metro Manila, etc. Name a place and we'll find a place or two where there is utter disregard for what are allowed and what are not. We have a long way to go in planning our cities and towns.

Japan's Universal Entertainment eyes partner for $2B Manila project

by abs-cbnnews | Thursday | 01/26/2012 | 4:35 PM

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATE) - Japanese arcade-game maker Universal Entertainment Corp. is in talks to get a local partner for its $2-billion gaming and entertainment complex in the Philippines capital Manila set to be completed in 2014, its chairman said on Thursday.

The local partner would operate the shopping establishments outside the main casino-hotel projects set to rise on a 45-hectare site along Manila Bay, said Kazuo Okada, also the biggest shareholder of Las Vegas-based Wynn Resorts Inc., after groundbreaking ceremonies for the project.

"The Philippines is a very attractive country to invest (in)," Okada told reporters, adding his group was "very confident" of pursuing the project after President Benigno Aquino was elected into office in 2010. Okada declined to give details about the talks for the partner.

The Philippines project has caused friction between Okada and Wynn Resorts, with the company objecting to Okada competing with it.

Japan firm to invest $2B in Pagcor project

2 luxury casino-hotels, indoor man-made beach

by Daxim L. Lucas | Philippine Daily Inquirer | Friday, January 27th, 2012 1:06 am

http://business.inquirer.net/files/2012/01/enertainment-City.jpgPerspective of the Bagong Nayong Pilipino Entertainment Complex
A Japanese gaming giant on Thursday broke ground on a multibillion-dollar casino resort development that will rise on the Bagong Nayong Pilipino Entertainment Complex being built along Manila Bay.

In ceremonies held at the site, Tiger Resorts, Leisure and Entertainment Inc. disclosed that the entire project—dubbed Manila Bay Resorts—would involve an investment of approximately $2 billion and would contribute significantly to the 400,000 jobs being targeted by the state-owned Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. (Pagcor) for the undertaking.

Tiger Entertainment officials said that the development would have two luxury casino hotels with 450 and 650 rooms each.

“The Philippines, with its scenic environment and world-famous Filipino hospitality, is an excellent location for the next huge entertainment tourism hub in the region,” said Kazuo Okada, who chairs Universal Entertainment Corp., the parent firm of Tiger Entertainment.

“Considering its proximity to China, South Korea, Japan, Singapore and Hong Kong, Manila has a competitive advantage over other major Asian cities,” he added.

Besides the countless white sandy beaches and historical sites, Cebu is also the birth place of Christianity in Asia.

The oldest city in Philippines, Cebu boasts more than beautiful beaches, it also has a rich history that Cebu residents are extremely proud of. The "Queen City of the South" has come far from its simple trading port days, evolving into a metropolitan center and major Southeast Asian tourist draw.

Cebu's 167 islets have become one of the country's favourite tourist destinations, with people flocking to its white sand beaches and pristine waters. Cebu's strategic location also makes it ideal for travellers looking to island hop.

About the Festival:
Capture the essence of Negros Occidental in the annual celebration of Panaad sa Negros Festival every April in Bacolod City.

Dubbed the “Festival of Festivals”, Panaad (Hiligaynon for a vow and its fulfillment) is a colorful and jubilant presentation of individual festivals of the 13 cities and 19 municipalities of Negros Occidental. It presents Bacolod City’s famous Masskara, La Carlota’s rhythmic Pasalamat, San Carlos City’s multi-awarded Pintaflores, Kabankalan City’s Sinulog, Bago City’s Babaylan, Escalante City’s Manlambus, Sagay City’s Sinigayan, Cadiz City’s Dinagsa, Mambukal’s Mudpack, San Enrique’s Bulang-Bulang, La Castellana’s Bailes de Luces, Don Salvador Benedicto’s Kali-Kalihan, and many more.

It brings together the 32 LGUs in an array of theme booths that showcase their history, arts and culture, tourism, commerce, trade and industry, in the 25-hectare eucalyptus trees-lined Panaad Park and Sports Complex.

Panaad is also a time renewing bonds or initiating friendships. The festival attracts most of the 2.6 million-strong Negrenses, their balikbayan relatives and friends, who get a glimpse of the best offerings of the towns and cities in a tour of the uniquely designed booths, as well as in cultural presentations and friendly competitions for beauty, talent, skills, and in sports.

Free shows or concerts by popular Manila-based artists add fun and excitement to the festivities. The fun continues in the food and drinks alley that offer the famous chicken inasal, grilled fish and seafood, including various shellfish, oysters, and scallops. Local bands perform nightly till way past midnight in the food and drinks alley.

Panaad also features the gains the province has achieved in its diversification efforts and its priority agenda, particularly in Food Sufficiency and Agricultural Productivity. It is seriously developing its rice and corn industries and positioning livestock as its second major industry, next to sugar.

With the Negrenses’ pioneering spirit, Negros is no longer just sugar; it is also cutflowers and ornamentals, high value fruits and organically-grown vegetables, prawns and seafood, champion fighting cocks, exquisite handcrafted gift items and houseware, world-class furniture and garments, and many more.

Panaad is a thanksgiving celebration and an exhibition of the best of Negros Occidental… now, “Sugar… and more!”

It's official: Palawan river sa 'New7Wonders'

Read more (http://bomboradyo.com/story-of-the-day/95234-its-official-palawan-river-sa-new7wonders)

Nevertheless, the Palawan Underground River does not need such contest, legitimate or not, to be recognized as a Natural Wonder of the World.

I personally think this whole "7 wonders" concept is quite silly. It's so subjective. There are so many wonders to behold in our world and to pick the top 7 sounds foolish to me.

All this effort to put PPUR on the top 7 should instead go to preserving it and other natural landmarks in the Philippines.

I guess it's rare to find selfless people who are doing this purely out of sincerity especially if big money is involved.

But I do appreciate the link on the articles or blogs you post whether it's good or bad - it does stimulate the skeptical side of our questioning nature and further hold those people accountable of their malice.

With regards to the underground river, we can all agree that we don't need the label. Words of mouth is not enough - recognition goes beyond advertising.

Tourists' Safety A Premium
By AARON B. RECUENCO
January 28, 2012, 7:36pm
MANILA, Philippines — Twenty tourists whose lives were in peril while enjoying the sights of Boracay and Palawan confirmed that it’s more fun in the Philippines, especially when you are saved by alert tourist policemen and enjoy your stay.

Local policemen boosted the tourism industry of the country after they rescued the 20 foreigners whose boats capsized in two separate incidents in Palawan and Boracay.

Chief Superintendent Agrimero Cruz Jr., spokesman of the Philippine National Police (PNP), said police are confident that the prompt response of the elements of the Maritime Group in Palawan and the tourist police on Boracay Island only made the 20 foreigners feel more secure while staying in the country.

Cruz said the first incident occurred Thursday when a boat loaded with 10 tourists capsized near the Puka Beach Resort on Boracay Island.

Quoting field reports, the official said seven Britons, two Chinese, and an Australian, reportedly “island-hopping,” were on board the capsized boat.

“Our personnel from the Boracay Special Tourist Police Office immediately responded, and all of them were rescued unharmed,” said Cruz.

The following day, another group of tourists was rescued after the boat they were riding also capsized off Bat Island in Honda Bay in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan.

A total of 15 people were on board, including four Dutch, a German, a Korean, a Chinese, a Slovenian, and two Croatians.

Cruz said the incident was spotted by members of the Special Boat Unit of the Maritime Group who were regularly conducting sea patrol in the area.

“They were all taken to the police headquarters where they were checked and given first aid,” said Cruz.

“All of them are safe,” he said, heaving a sigh of relief.

The PNP was earlier tapped for tourism promotion in the country, through the so-called tourist police units that patrol areas frequented by domestic and foreign tourists.

Bravo!

Business (and casual) meetings at Resorts World :)

by Ma. Esther Salcedo - Posadas | Philippine Daily Inquirer | 8:42 pm | Saturday | January 28th, 2012

RESORTS World is located in front of Ninoy Aquino International Airport 3
If you are a businessman in Manila, it is possible that you may have been invited to check out the latest integrated resort near the airport known as Resorts World.

You may also have scheduled a business meeting in the area or could be planning a future stay there.

Following are a few notes to consider outside the casino and Genting Club:

Marriott Hotel

The brand is known internationally for its exceptional service. For lunch meetings, the hotel offers daily buffet specials with open theater kitchens serving various cuisine.

For ala carte, you may wish to sample the famous Marriott Burger that is supposedly served uniformly around the world. Marriott’s history started in 1927 with a hamburger and root beer joint known as A&W (which had a franchise in the Philippines before).

MANILA, Philippines—The Puerto Princesa Underground River (PPUR) is now officially one of the New7Wonders of Nature, the founder of global campaign announced on Saturday.

Bernard Weber, founder-president of New7Wonders, congratulated the Filipinos as the 8.2-kilometer Palawan river joined the Amazon rainforest, Vietnam’s Halong Bay and Argentina’s Iguazu Falls as among the world’s new seven wonders of nature.

“When your very own President Aquino came out in support of the PPUR campaign, I knew that this country was taking the New7Wonders of Nature seriously,” said Weber. “Fans of PPUR all over the world responded to his call for action by voting in record numbers and today’s confirmation is the well-earned reward for this extraordinary display of enthusiasm.”

JP is correct dancethingy, it's good for publicity and tourism promotion. It also helps generate funds for the preservation of this landmark. What's the use of these landmark if it will be kept hidden to the world?

I'm sure there are tons of other things that can be considered "wonders" of the world, some are yet to be discovered, so, for the mean time be happy that it is included until the time something else beat that whole "wonder" and dethrone PPUR status in 7th wonders of the world, it's worth being noticed with, a national treasure that needs to be recognized all over the world and promote it while preserving the beauty of nature.

Tourist arrivals in PH hit record 3.9m in 2011

by Roderick T. dela Cruz | Manila Standard Today | Monday | January 30, 2012

International visitor arrivals in the Philippines hit a new record high of 3.917 million in 2011, although the figure remains one of the lowest in Southeast Asia.

While the Tourism Department has not released the final tourist count for 2011, President Benigno Aquino III cited in a speech before foreign investors that last year’s number represented a growth of 11.2 percent from 3.52 million arrivals in 2010.

The 2011 figure also surpassed the government’s target visitor arrivals of 3.7 million for the year.

The Tourism Department aims to attract as many as 10 million visitors to the Philippines annually beginning 2016, or at the end of Aquino’s term in Malacañang. The agency set a target of 4.2 million tourists this year.

Countries such as Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia have been drawing over 10 million visitors each year.

MAMMA MIA! In Manila Extends Till 2/19
29 January 2012 | news Newsdesk

True blue ABBA fans have an additional one week to catch the international touring production of composers and lyricists Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, and book writer Catherine Johnson’s smash musical Mamma Mia! at the Cultural Center of the Philippines. Previously slated to close on February 14, Concertus Inc., one of the local producers behind Mamma Mia!, has just announced the show’s final extension: must close February 19.

Mamma Mia! opened in Manila on January 24 to a very enthusiastic audience that danced in the aisles to the show’s finale megamix: a medley of ABBA’s greatest hits that includes “Mamma Mia,” “Dancing Queen,” and “Waterloo” done in a concert style.

Can you write instead in Filipino rather than the grammatically laced error English. Masakit sa mata basahin.

You're not a Filipino, as I wrote in other thread. You know why? you're not a Filipino?

If a Filipino knows that he/she cannot express well in English, he/she has no guts to write in English. He/she will be ashamed to his/her compatriots especially if some people already commented the deficiencies. The Filipino would immediately stop doing it. The Filipino would never insist in expressing himself poorly in English language because he/she will be the laughing stock and you know this Pinoy pride..... He/she would rather write or express himself/herself in native language such as Tagalog or Cebuano to avoid the ridicule. Did you get it???? Stop the drama.

Does not need to be perfect, kahit nga mga native english speaker mali-mali rin ang grammar at spelling. The point was actually how to figure out what was being said/written.

I noticed that too. I'm sure, papansin lang 'yan. There's also something wrong with his/her reasoning and views. Sorry, but I find them too elementary and twisted.

Hindi naman masamang sumubok gumamit ng banyagang wika, subalit kung ito'y magbibigay lamang ng kaguluhan at confusion, I suggest that we stick in using the language we are expert in or accustomed to. We are here to express and to share our views freely, but, we are bound to make such clear and comprehensible. Otherwise, the goal of having a rich discussion would be defeated. Pero kung ang posts ay mukhang papansin lang talaga, that really is a problem.

At least intelligible. Yeah, it matters a lot. This is a forum, and chances of being misunderstood are high if there are flaws in grammar. Just what scamingue has posted - okay namang Filipino dito (ang gamitin).

If a post would only create confusion, I suggest that the same should be deleted instead.

Hey friends, let's cut the guy/girl some slack please. As far as I know it isn't offensive to be bad at expressing one's self, even if one were "syntactically" challenged.

He/she didn't say anything offensive to anyone here, and he/she was giving his/her views. The grammar was far from perfect, but hey, I could understand what he/she was saying.

It's actually embarrassing to read some people's chastisements when their posts too are far from flawless.

I don't mean that we should just allow this thread to degrade into some mumble jumble, but then, can't we ask more politely if we want the guy/girl to work on his/her posts?

Di naman sa ganun. Our country prides itself as having very good english communication skills and yet reality proves that our english skills are actually deteriorating thru the years. If we dont correct ourselves,we'd find ourselves as a country known for broken english. Whereas other asian countries are doing everything for their citizens to acquire good english skills, we are actually doing the opposite. Have you notice the number of foreign students who comes to our country just to learn english? Its because english is still the official language of choice for business communication. Its one of the skills why BPO and call center companies flocked to our country. If anything we need to further strengthen that skill that we have.

It's too bad HKers who follow the travel ban are all missing the fun! It's definitely more fun here in The Philippines!

Why would our govt be interested in improving relations with the HK govt? If that happens then pnoy must do the following, he may not have to issue a public apology to the hk govt but he must meet with the victims families even in private and condole with them just to have some closure. He must issue reparation payments to the victims families as this is part of an asian value of face saving. Face saving is very important to china and the rest of asia, nto so much here in the phils. He must prosecute mayor lim et al as suggested by the de lima report which was also agreed and approved by the hk govt. Lastly pnoy could make a personal apology to the victims families in private. Doing this will correct the mistake of that tragedy. This will also improve our image as a country to other nations. Remember that tragedy and the subsequent action of our govt was televised world wide.

It does not really matter whether they are Fil-ams or not. The most important thing is: they spend money here and it benefits our economy.

Just imagine the impact of these travelers before they flew to PH. Surely, their intricate plans are made known to their families and friends. They were telling them about their PH trips - the particular areas, why they will come here, for what. I'm sure these tourists got some negative feedback about PH but they continued their itinerary and 3.9 Millions did that in 2011.

I just wish that the greater majority were satisfied because the multiplier effect would be tremendous.

Quite true, but asking Floro30 to stop using english because he is not good at it and advising him to use Filipino instead will not in anyway improve our deteriorating english...and some even told him " to spare us Filipinos from embarassment", there was nothing posted here to advise him to improve and be better rather only efforts to rebuke him and try to hide the reality from others that indeed our english proficiency is deteriorating. My professor in Physics said that it's too late to revive the powerplant. Mas mahal na daw ngayon. Sana dati pa. Tyaka sabi niya kulang kulang na yung mga parts n'yan. Binili na ng South Korea.

Fil-Am architect designing 2,000-seat Cebu Church–something that’s never been seen
http://lifestyle.inquirer.net/33059/fil-am-architect-designing-2000-seat-cebu-church%E2%80%93something-that%E2%80%99s-never-been-seen

*****************
Arnaiz, who finished architecture at Harvard University, has been practicing for a little over 12 years now. After working for a number of firms in the US, he put up his own architecture firm in Brooklyn, CAZA or Carlos Arnaiz Architects, almost four years ago, and now employs a dozen or so associate architects from various parts of the globe.

*****************

The 1,000-seat, 2,220-sq m Shrine of Mary is in the South Reclamation Zone in Cebu. Arnaiz plans to create a main entrance set against a series of walls with varying heights.

The project is financed by SM, which is building a mall complex in Cebu similar to SM Mall of Asia in Manila.

The entrance evokes the mystery one supposedly experiences while wandering through a mythical forest. The series of walls symbolizes the many paths and obstacles one goes through to arrive at one’s own enlightenment, said Arnaiz.

“Construction started this month. The building should be finished before the end of 2012. The owners’ goal is to have Christmas Mass celebrated in the church this year,” he added.

CAZA is also into urban planning and gentrification. The company will have a project with the Cebu City government to improve the streetscape of historic Osmeña Avenue.

The gentrification project along the 2 km stretch entails creating a series of sidewalks, patterns and monuments from downtown to the city hall building. It also involves a series of “traffic-calming” devices, lamps and benches.

“It’s probably one of the simplest and humblest projects we’ve done, but it’s one of my favorites,” said Arnaiz. “It’s different from other projects we’ve done, that’s why I’m proud of it.”

"Into the Green Zone" Photography by George Tapan.

Congratulations to George Tapan for winning the 2011 National Geographic Photo Contest 2011 - Places Category!

This is a significant win for the Philippines because:

1. The National Geographic Photo Contest is the most prestigious annual International Photo Contest capturing the beauty of the world through captivating imagery.

2. There were 20,000 photographs submitted by the best photographers in 130 countries for three categories: people, places, and nature. There is a winner in each category and an overall winner among the three category winners. George Tapan is the winner for places category.

3. This contest is not based on popularity votes (via facebook likes). The winning photos were judged by respected National Geographic magazine photographers Tim Laman, Amy Toensing, and Peter Essick based on creativity and photographic quality (without the use of photoshop).

4. This is the first time that Philippines won in this prestigious contest. This is also the first time that George Tapan joined this contest and won :)

5. The winning entry showcases the real beauty of the Philippines through the beauty of our beaches in Palawan!

The Story about the Photo:
The photo was taken in Onuk Island, Balabac in the south of Palawan, Philippines. The island is 3 hours away from Puerto Princesa and is near the Jewelmer Farms in Palawan.

It was taken while George's team was stranded on the island during their photo expedition of Palawan. It was raining hard and the strong wind created a nice flowing effect on the hair of the lady. The rain which stopped in the far distance created the rainbow effect in the horizon. The fisherman in the background is looking for turtles.

This is what you call the Photographer's Moment, where you are in the right place, at the right time, with the right subject and background, and with a camera on hand to take the shot.

George is finishing his book on Palawan which will be released early next year. George said that the Onuk Island beach is shallow for about 200 meters from the shore and is more beautiful than the beaches of Boracay.

George joined the photo contest in late November because he was disappointed with the entries of some photographers which magnified the poverty of the Philippines. He was determined to win the contest by showcasing the real beauty of Palawan, Philippines :)

Praises from the National Geographic Photo Contest Judges:

Tim Laman: Photographer George Tapan "showed a perfect sense of timing and composition in the way he captured the two small human subjects in this beautiful scene, and that really made the shot."

Amy Toensing: The "very moody, beautifully composed" image, called "Into the Green Zone," compellingly shows a sense of place via the dark clouds, rainbows, the spot of pink amid a palette of blues and greens, and the woman's flowing hair.

Peter Essick: was also captivated by the detail of the woman's hair. It only "fills a fraction of the picture's real estate, but by capturing the movement at the apex, the photographer has documented a sense of style and flair,"

National Geographic Judges: Overall, the picture shows that "small things can sometimes make a big difference."

Planned social-sharing web site aims to lure tourists to PHL :)

by Lenie Lectura | BusinessMirror | Sunday | 29 January 2012 | 20:29

The Internet and Mobile Marketing Association of the Philippines (Immap) has unveiled plans to launch a “social-sharing web site” in a bid to lure in more tourists in the country.

Immap Vice President Paul John Peña said the site will feature, among others, the most visited places in the country and feedback from tourists and locals.

“As an organization, we believe that digital marketing has a very strategic role in bringing tourism in the Philippines. It starts with a search on the Internet. Once these foreign guests decide on where to go they will probably tweet or post that on their Facebook account that they will be going to the Philippines. What we want is to engage people talk about or share about positive content for the Philippines though a social-sharing site,” said Peña.

Metrobank Group receives two offers for resort project
http://www.philstar.com/Article.aspx?articleId=772654&publicationSubCategoryId=108

CEBU, Philippines - At least two property owners in Cebu are now talking with the Metrobank Group, for a possible joint-venture or land offer for its plan to build a resort facility in Mactan Island, to complement its five-star hotel in City, the Marco Polo Plaza Cebu.

In an interview with Metrobank Group chairman Antonio Abacan Jr., he said that a 10-hectare shoreline property is being offered to the company located in Punta Engaño, Mactan Island. Another 12-hectare property in Mactan is also being presented to the group.

However, he said while the company maintains its interest to build a complementary resort facility for the good performing Marco Polo Plaza Cebu, the group still has to conduct further study if it is going to pursue the development soon.

“We are still in the exploration stage. Maybe we could put up a hotel-type facility on the Island [Mactan]. The negotiation is still on the infant stage though,” Abacan said on the sideline during the visit of Metrobank Group founder George S.K. Ty at the company’s power plant in Toledo City, west of Cebu during the weekend.

Philippines: The stairway to heaven

Soak in the extraordinary sights of Sagada in Philippines - hanging coffins, endless bat caves and rice terraces known as the stairways to heaven

A strong, pungent smell hit us in the face as we walked into the cave. We could hear some chirps and shrieks. Beyond where the sun shone, there was nothing but a vast, gaping hole. We removed our sandals and got down on all fours. Everything we touched felt slimy. Our guide told us that it's guano, the excrement of bats living in the cave.

The cave was the largest of over 60 underground caves in the remote town of Sagada, which lies deep within the Cordillera Mountains of the Philippines. Our guide paused to light up his kerosene lamp. The flickering flame cast eerie shapes on the walls around us. We pressed on, disappearing further into the cave.

Gunmen abduct tourists in the Philippines
A Swiss and a Dutch tourist have been abducted along with their local guide while on a bird watching trip in the Philippines.

The tourists, aged 47 and 52, had gone to an area where they could see endangered species. They were seized by an armed group in the country's southernmost Tawi-Tawi island province and taken away on a boat, authorities said on Wednesday.

The Tawi-Tawi governor, Sadikul Sahali, said the tourists had not wanted to be escorted by armed men, choosing instead to be accompanied by a town council member and an unarmed police officer who were overpowered by the gunmen. And here we were planning to do bird studies in Subic to Bataan, and elsewhere this coming October to December, bringing with me my sensei and a colleague. Although far from Tawi-Tawi, the entire Philippines' image will always suffer. If they ask me about it (safety in doing such activity in our country), it would be difficult to convince them that it is safe when you have to contend with happenings (and a series of bad press for sure) like these.

Candaba Pampanga, Morong Bataan, even Cebu and Manila- you can go bird watching.

You can also do birdwatching here in Cabusao wetlands, Camarines Sur. This was also declared by the DENR as critical habitat for the Philippine ducks

There are some who take the risk and travel to hostile areas. Unfortunately, these tourists have to face the consequence of their actions.

As for the Swiss, I have a feeling he's a Filipino with a Swiss passport.

Precisely, why Tawi-Tawi????? Of all places! I thought Tawi Tawi is safe. I wanted to visit the place but bad publicity really turned me off.

Both local and foreign media have viewed Mindanao, especially Western Mindanao as a hostile place and is not recommended for foreigners to visit especially ARMM.

It is a question why they chose Tawi Tawi. I'm sure they know that it is a high-risk to visit but they took the risk, anyway.

They were consenting adults and freely decided to take the risk so they shouldn't blame anyone but themselves.:bash:

There should be a law to make them accountable for the damages they have caused to our nation's image.:ohno:

More of a research from a road less traveled. I guess.

In my opinion, the tourists made a bad call for not having an armed escort. Even in Iligan City, when going to mountainous barangays, the travellers are required to have an armed escort.

Kidnapped Filipino guide escapes from captors in Tawi-Tawi

http://globalnation.inquirer.net/24719/kidnapped-filipino-guide-escapes-from-captors-in-tawi-tawi

MANILA, Philippines—A Filipino guide seized Wednesday in Tawi-Tawi along with two European birdwatchers has escaped from their abductors, police told INQUIRER.net.

Ivan Sarenas escaped from the five gunmen who abducted him said Director Felicisimo Khu, chief of the Directorate of Integrated Police Operations in Western Mindanao.

But the foreigners—Swiss national Lorenzo Vinciguerra, 47, and Dutchman Ewold Horn, 52—remain with their captors, Khu said.

The gunmen seized the three men while they were on a birdwatching trip in Sitio Look-look, in the village of Parangan in Panglima Sugala town, he said.
They were forced onto a speedboat, regional military spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Randolph Cabangbang told Agence France-Presse.

A second Filipino guide escaped and was the first to report the crime to authorities, he added.

Sarenas, meanwhile, escaped by jumping out of the speeding pump boat at around 9:30 p.m., he said in a report he sent to Philippine National Police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Agrimero Cruz Jr.

He has been brought to Panglima Sugala municipal police station where he was being interviewed by the police director for Tawi-Tawi, said Khu.

Sarenas is a member of the Wild Bird Club of the Philippines and frequently visits Tawi-Tawi, the club’s treasurer, Michael Lu, told Agence France-Presse.

“He had been a frequent visitor to Tawi-Tawi and he is the only person I know who has pictures of rare birds from that area, such as the Sulu hornbill,” Lu said.

The Dutch foreign ministry refused to confirm the abduction at present and said it did not know the identity of the person kidnapped.

Cabangbang said the military did not yet know who abducted the trio.

Police said that the suspects armed with an M203, two M16 rifles, and two caliber .45 pistols, were on board a pump boat and might be headed towards Sulu.

The Tawi-Tawi Crisis Management Committee has since been activated with joint forces of the police, navy and marines working to rescue the victims.

Wednesday’s abductions lift the number of foreigners kidnapped in Mindanao since the beginning of last year to more than 10.

Five of them — an Australian, two Malaysian traders, an Indian married to a Filipina and a Japanese man — are still in captivity. Three abducted Filipinos are also still being held.

The Australian, 53-year-old Warren Rodwell, was kidnapped from his home in in a southern town in December and appeared in a video released to media last month in which he said his adbuctors were demanding $2 million for his release.

In 2000 the Abu Sayyaf kidnapped 21 mostly European tourists from a Malaysian island resort and brought them by boat to the Philippine island of Jolo, not far from Tawi Tawi.
The hostages were ransomed off after many months for millions of dollars, with Libya brokering the deals and facilitating their release.

The following year the Abu Sayyaf kidnapped three Americans along with a group of Filipino tourists from a southwestern Philippine island resort. One of the Americans was beheaded and another was killed during a rescue attempt.

The Abu Sayyaf was founded in the 1990s with seed money from Osama bin Laden’s Al-Qaeda network.

It is believed to have only a few hundred militants but is blamed for the country’s worst terrorist attacks, including the bombing of a ferry in Manila in 2004 that killed more than 100 people, as well as the kidnappings.

Anyway, let the military deal with it, it's an unfortunate incident but no reason for us to not focus on other safe places in the Philippines. The people of Sulu archipelago should be ashamed of this incident- this is not the Filipino way of welcoming guests. If they want to keep on destroying their reputation then we can't do anything about it but advise people not to go visit them.

Tell that to the marines, how can you expect them to believe you that only a few places in the country isn't safe when they will be bombarded by the media with this news about the kidnapping. It's a spit in the eye.

Ask Americans in United States, and they still keep on pouring to Cancún, despite the bad press of the drug wars of northern México.

The difference I guess is that here, the tourists themselves were the targets. In the drug wars of Mexico, I am of the impression that it is fought amongst the drug dealers/users/mafia themselves.

Can we get a little more desperate about it, use a team like the US Navy SEAL and storm the HQ of these bastards.

UK travel warning: 'Kidnapping can occur anywhere in the PHL'
The abduction of two Europeans and their Filipino guide in Tawi-Tawi Wednesday has prompted the United Kingdom to advise its nationals against traveling to parts of Mindanao.

In its travel advice for the Philippines updated Feb. 1, the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office cited a "threat from kidnapping in the Philippines, particularly in the south."

"Kidnapping could occur anywhere, including on coastal and island resorts and dive boats and sites in the Sulu Sea. On 1 February, two foreign nationals were kidnapped from Parangan in the township of Panglima Sugala in the Tawi Tawi island province," it said. We have quite a bit of a negative image tourism wise in the world because every few month's wed either have natural catastrophes or news of foreign tourists kidnaped or killed etc, altho there is a point to be made with regards improving infrastructures and security .

Imo banning or at least discouraging foreign tourists from visiting certain conflict or high risk regions by say making it more expensive and complicated to go there or adding extra bureaucracy should be a government policy in order to prevent or limit more of these negative incidents .

Anyway im talking here about those few southern islands that really do have high risk sulu, tawi tawi, basilan or areas around western Mindanao, for the rest of the country where necessary they should improve security in highly frequented areas by foreign nationals and tourists .

And perhaps we could instead encourage them to go deep north rather than deep south of the country, sure the babuyan and batanes islands are probably not as tropical and is cooler and without nice sandy beaches compared to tawi tawi but they can be nice places too lol .

I agree with you. I wonder why the two tourists had to go to Tawi Tawi just to see the endangered bird species!!! The whole county is dragged by this negative publicity. More fun in the Philippines? DOT blames abducted tourists for ignoring advisories

The Department of Tourism on Firday seemingly laid the blame for the kidnapping of two Europeans in Tawi-Tawi squarely on the victims' shoulders.

In a press statement issued late Friday, the DOT stressed that "the issuance of travel advisories is part of the regular functions of embassies in line with ensuring the safety and security of their citizens in a foreign country. For the Philippines, advice against travel to some parts of Mindanao has been constant and common." The DOT then added: "The Tawi-Tawi incident is considered unfortunate and could have been avoided had the visitors taken necessary precautions many European tourists usually take in heed of these advisories.

the npa's and milf or whatever insurgents there is in other provinces will continue to exist if the disparity in infrastructure and development continues to be concentrated in mm. if ncr is considered a special province or unit then it should only be given one share out of the total number of provinces we have when it comes to budget for infrastructure and development projects. its really hard to ignore the needs of our brothers in the countryside thats why they resort into kidnapping and killing those who they think have the money.

Rebel groups such as The NPA are not located in key tourist areas say Boracay nor cause trouble or havoc there.

On the other hand, even in countries with high tourist arrivals such as Thailand have their own hostile areas and tourists are given an advisory to avoid Southern Thailand or areas within the borders of Cambodia or Laos.

In fact our infrastructures are not fully concentrated in Metro Manila. Cebu, Davao and other major Philippine cities also get a piece of the pie.

As if we didn't know that the IRA allocations given to those poor provinces were not stolen by their local officials. Billions of pesos were given to them and yet, the corrupt officials continue to steal the money instead of appropriating them for development.

Metro Manila is not considered as one special province. It is composed of several cities and are contributing hugely to the national Treasury thru its taxes, etc..

OT: I agree, MM hugely contributes to the National Treasury through taxes and many other things. On the other hand, MM is what it is right now because of these poor provinces. Through our taxes, we helped Metro Manila become one of the riches city in SEA. Sorry I just had to reply to that.

If you take a look at tax collections by BIR per region, Metro Manila and other rich provinces/cities such as Cebu, Davao, CDO, Baguio etc. contributed much.

As an example, even though the tax collection in Makati is so huge, the IRA allocation does not correspond to that amount since Makati is also earning big from its own revenue generating schemes i.e. Business Permits.

Sadly, the poor provinces are being subsidized by the rich provinces and cities and yet the corrupt politicians continue to steal the money instead of putting the funds for development and to uplift the condition of the poor people there. How many times did I see dilapidated roads in Samar, Surigao, Masbate, and other areas? There were funds allocated to DPWH and politicians and yet, where is the money? There are also funds for community livelihood projects but how come they have no small businesses????

Another classic example is ARMM: Billions of pesos were given to them and yet the province remains to be poor but billions of pesos and huge cache of arms were uncovered/retrieved from the Ampatuans. Need I say more???? why the vicious cycle of poverty continues? CORRUPTION is the issue.

what I don't like with the pyromusical in MOA is that it takes weeks to finish all participants... it would be nice it can be done in a night... though that would definitely generate a lot of pollution! eheheh..

Well bad PR again due to the earthquake so in the news it's all "Phillippines earthquake this many dead and or missing", obviously it did happen but this is basically our image and exposure in the west where every few weeks it's kindof negative while there seems to be a total absence of any tourism or pr effort in the media .

----

On the issues of taxes i think like alot of issues discussed on these message boards the solution would be for federalisation of the country .

It would definetely help with regards tourism if on top of a national tourism agency that each region or even town or village get their acts togheter and have their own local tourism dept's, and for each to generate their own means to market themselves and invest in tourism friendly projects and policies to compliment national DOT efforts .

Palawan for example can directly market itself as it's own brand and destination or Bohol etc it doesn't always have to be "Phillippines" imo ... .

Boracay eyed as venue for Asian Games centennial celebration
(philstar.com) Updated February 04, 2012 04:21 PM

BORACAY ISLAND, (Xinhua) -- The Central Philippines' resort island Boracay is being considered by the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) as venue for the 2013 executive meeting for the centennial celebration of Asian games, an official said on Saturday.

Aklan Provincial Congressman Florencio Miraflores said that he has spoken to Philippine Olympic Committee president Jose Cojuangco Jr and that the proposal to make Boracay as a venue has been approved in principle.

Cojuangco, together with OCA president Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad AL-SABAH of Kuwait, had recently come to this resort island to determine the potential of Boracay in hosting the centennial celebration of the Asian Games. The meeting was hosted by Boracay mayor John Yap.

"I was told that officials from International Olympic Committee will be coming over for the centennial celebration. The games will also be attended by 45 countries in Asia," Miraflores said.

It was in 1913, when Manila hosted "Oriental Olympics", which was also known later as "the Far Eastern Games".

The Philippines was known to be the prime mover of the sports event being hosted by Manila, Shanghai and Osaka (turns every two years).

Metro Cebu: Asia’s next retail hub (http://www.malaya.com.ph/02092012/property1.html)
Malaya Business Insight
February 9, 2012

THE proliferation of retail developments along with an influx of domestic and foreign tourists is turning Metro Cebu into a major retail destination in the South, according to real estate advisory firm CB Richard Ellis (CBRE) Philippines.

CBRE said that with the right push and consistent support from both public and private sectors, Metro Cebu can even become the newest retail destination in Asia.

The firm reported a total of 5.6 million local and foreign tourists visited Cebu from January to November last year.

CBRE noted that 1.32 million of these tourists are international travellers.

With the increasing number of tourists, local and national retail developers are seeing Metro Cebu’s retail business as a growth opportunity.

Local retail players like Prince Warehouse, Metro Gaisano, Gaisano South and Gaisano Capital are no longer alone in Metro Cebu’s retail arena with the expansion of big national retailers such as SM, Robinsons, Rustan’s/Shopwise and Puregold.

"The entry of these big players are a show of confidence in the growth potential of Metro Cebu’s retail sector," CBRE said.

American fashion brand Forever 21 launched its first outlet outside Metro Manila in SM City Cebu in the second half of 2011.

A three-storey mall with 70,000 square meters of gross leasable area called J Centre was also launched in the second half of last year.

CBRE reported that Cebu Holdings, Inc. (CHI), an affiliate of property developer Ayala Land, Inc. (ALI) is embarking on the central stage of Ayala Center Cebu’s expansion within the 9-hectare land inside the Cebu Business Park.

The P3-billion four-level development is said to complete the original full-circle design of the mall.

In addition, two SM Savemore Markets opened in Mandaue last November while SM Consolacion with its 40,000 sqm of gross leasable area is set to open this year.

SM Prime Holdings also launched a P20 billion integrated development project at South Road Properties (SRP) called SM Seaside Complex.

The 30-hectare development will be anchored by a huge shopping mall to be known SM Seaside City Cebu which is about half of the size of the SM Mall of Asia in Pasay, CBRE reported.

Filinvest Land also announced its entry to the Metro Cebu retail business late last year with a retail space project in its 50-hectare new community development in Cebu City’s SRP.

The land development of the 10.6-hectare retail development has started in October last year and the first phase would be completed by the third quarter of 2013.

Metro Cebu is composed of three major cities in Cebu, namely Cebu, Mandaue, and Lapu-Lapu.

Metro Cebu has an aggregate population of roughly 1.5 million and a total land area of 408 square kilometers.

CBRE noted that about 37 percent of Cebu’s population is found in these three major cities.

"With Cebu now becoming known as a major tourist destination, Cebu retailers are directly benefitting from the upsurge in tourist arrivals from shopping requirements as well as increased demand from HORECA (Hotels, Restaurants and Catering Services)," CBRE said.

"This momentum continues to build up as government initiatives are geared towards the growth of investment and tourism of Metro Cebu," the firm added.

All set for Hot Air Balloon Fiesta
MANILA, Philippines – The 17th International Hot Air Balloon Fiesta is all set for take off.

The yearly aviation event, which opens on Thursday, February 9, at the Clark Freeport, is expected to attract 100,000 visitors, or 20% more than last year’s 80,000 figure.

On Wednesday, organizers held a preview with members of Kite Team Philippines showing off their colorful kites.

“We’re set but, of course, we want 110% preparedness,” event director Capt. Joy Roa told ABS-CBN News.

The festival runs until February 12.

According to Noemi Garcia, the head of the Clark Development Corp.’s Tourism and Promotions Office, spectators will be treated to a larger and more varied event, as at least nine countries are expected to participate – more than in 2011.

Apart from hot air ballon flights, there will be exhibitions on paragliding, kite flying and skydiving, aerobatic flight displays, ultralight aircraft formation flying, light airplane balloon bursting competitions and R/C demonstrations, among others.

Food trip

Tour operators are also offering unique travel packages in connection with the aviation fiesta.

For instance, ClubTravelNOW.org has incorporated a food trip component, given that Pampanga is widely regarded as a culinary capital. The package includes lunch at Cucina ni Atching Lillian Borromeo for authentic Kapampangan food, merienda at Kabigting’s Halo-Halo and dinner at Aling Lucing’s, which specializes in sisig.

Also included in the tour are visits to the Betish Church, said to be Pampanga’s version of the Sistine Chapel; the San Guillermo Church, which was almost submerged in lahar: Abe’s Farm, the resthouse of the late restaurateur Larry J. Cruz that has been turned into a restaurant and museum; and Marquee Mall. -- Reports from JV Dizon, ABS-CBN Pampanga

More fun..
Pinoys, British support new tourism slogan
LONDON - Filipinos in the United Kingdom are very supportive of the Department of Tourism's new campaign “It’s More Fun in the Philippines”, according to a tourism official in the UK.
Chit Afuang, DOT officer-in-charge in the UK, shared that the new campaign slogan received positive feedback from many Filipinos in the United Kingdom.

“The reactions we get from Filipinos probably we say 98% are really positive,” she said.

According to Afuang, the British market also welcomed the new slogan.

“For the British market, we receive a lot of reactions, congratulating us for the new effective slogan”.

The DOT here is confident that they will exceed their targets of British tourists visiting the Philippines this year.

DOT will also start changing the old WOW Philippines ad that was advertised on London cabs before the 2012 Olympics.

“We are really banking on the fifty taxis that we have in London. We have to change the logo just in time also for the Olympics game,” she said.

Gerry Agatep, a careworker in London, commended the new DOT slogan.

“It’s a good slogan because it shows that the Philippines is really a fun place for tourists,” he said.

But he also stressed that to encourage more foreigners to visit the country, they should be treated very well.

“As soon as tourists arrive in the airport, they should immediately be treated like they are very welcome in our country,” he said.

Efren Smith, a Filipino-British who grew up in London and a constant traveler to the Philippines, also praised the new campaign slogan.

“I think the slogan is good because it makes the Philippines more unique compare to all the other Far East countries,” Smith said.

These are of course kids up to their 20's like those showed in your pic, of course there are more sensible British tourists starting around their 30's and they probably would be the one's more interested in travelling all the way to the Phillippines, because most British tourists are really more about "having fun" which means nice beaches lots of booze and rowdy behaviour and you can unfortunetely really do that more in the Mediterranean and far more cheaply comfortably and safely than in the Phillippines, so i think you need to understand the profile better and tailor your campaign to specific demographics in this case to older Brits .

In any case i think the Phillippines should develop one island not really Boracay but something similar into a more hardcore party island there are several thousand after all, way past anything in the region rivalling party coolness in the Mediterranean specifically catering to younger tourists wanting to have a wild no holds barred fun vacation, given neighbouring countries pudic nature alot of their kids will probably flock there to escape their "opression" lol to experience real fun sea booze and sex .

It will probably attract from as far away as the Persian gulf, China, S.Korea, Japan etc but it has to be well thought out from the start as a wild party island complete with it's own international airport, big modern clubs with international dj's as guests, a large volume of cheap hotel rooms, lots of booze perhaps even legalising weed in "coffee shops" like in the Netherlands, and of course tailor made laws and relatively isolated location and good security to prevent "issues" with less liberally inclined people and terror attacks from extremist religious party poopers .

I know some of this might be going too far even for the Phillippines lol but it is a niche with probably a big potential .

@ARVOR I'm one with you in suggesting a Party Island like Ibiza is best example most teenage European Brits esp. likes this Balearic Isle as I observed (I've been there :D ) it's pretty much like Boracay Nightlife, Carabao Island North of Boracay in Romblon Province is Ideal for this Booze Party Island to be Since Balearic Group is comprising 3 to 4 Islands they hop from one of this to another most of the time.
