Well, first off

1. Better English

2. Snob appeal. In the contemporary world, being Anglo Saxon is still being on top of the food chain, let's face it.

3. The British pound isn't exactly tethered to the Euro which still makes it stronger. At least, stronger than most ASEAN currencies.

4. The British tend to retire in places they take an extreme liking to. ;) Needless to say, the more Pound Sterling we can haul in, the better.

5. The Mod was merely portraying a contrast between British and local tourists. I'm sure no harm was intended.

I think he meant in that "white British" as opposed to Filipinos living there and or what do we call them FilBrits or FlipBrits ?, the thing is "white Brits" unless they are older or looking for a wife or a sex vacation would have less of a reason to come all the way to the Phillippines when they can quite easily go to places like Florida or around the Mediterranean or even the UAE where they have lots of expats living .

To be honest we don't really have much to offer British or indeed alot of western tourists which they can't find closer to home i mean beaches churches cathedrals get real they are now mainly atheists and have more than enough churches back in Europe or even beaches, in terms of culture they can go to Spain or Florida/ Mexico for something latin if they want south east asian well they go to Thailand .

And as i have mentioned younger Brits are not going to spend the air fare all the way to the Phillippines when they can quite cheaply fly or drive around Europe and the Mediterranean for good safe beaches booze and sun, there's no way the Phillippines can compete with those air fares and the quality of closer destinations on offer it's that simple .

http://www.thomascook.com/holidays/?sinav=topnav_holidays_TC
Check out what's on offer this is what the Phils will have to compete against .

Realistically speaking the type of white Briton you could expect to come to the Phillippines other than older brits wanting something slightly different since theyve seen it all elsewhere would be those adventurous enough to make new lives in foreign countries, meaning they buy homes and start a local business of some sort but given our ridiculous real estate and other laws it's not likely either, i guess if they complete the new casino paradise in Manila bay that could attract a few gamblers ... .

So lol the most likely "Brits" to come over are FilBrits who actually do have a more compelling reason to go halfway round the world, it is not to say however that it is impossible to get them to come at least in greater numbers than they do now but to do so would require alot of work and improvement of what's on offer from infrastructure to pricing and of course marketing .

speaking of British...

I really like this British reporter from BBC - Kate McGeown . She has been covering most of the stuff for the Philippines for the news network. here is one of her most recent documentaries.

Healing rituals and bad spirits on a Philippine island (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-16871785)

Siquijor Islanders gather earth and dust to use in rituals to protect their homes

In today's Magazine

Siquijor is one of more than 7,000 islands in the Philippines - it has tropical sun, white sand and an azure sea, but it is also famous for witchcraft.

How do you go about looking for a witch?

It is not a question I had ever thought to ask before, so I rang the Siquijor tourism department to see if they were able to help.

"We don't have any witches," was the first reply, which did not seem all that promising.

But after a bit more discussion, it seems that Siquijor's witches - well, the good ones anyway - have recently undergone a rebranding exercise. They are now called traditional healers.

But what about the bad witches, I asked? "Oh we don't promote them," came the rather sensible answer.

Entertainment City seen key to gov’t tourism thrust
By: Daxim L. Lucas
Philippine Daily Inquirer
10:24 pm | Thursday, February 9th, 2012

The success of the Aquino administration’s thrust to develop the local tourism industry hinges, to a large degree, on the success of the Entertainment City of the Philippine Amusement Gaming Corp. (Pagcor), according to a report published recently by CLSA Asia-Pacific Markets.

In turn, the success of Entertainment City is anchored on the policy of the state gaming agency requiring investors to put up hotels before they could operate casinos within the complex, the local unit of the international stock brokerage firm said.

Under Pagcor’s existing policy, each of the gaming complex’s four anchor investors must first build—and operate—an upscale hotel of at least 800 rooms in size, before being allowed to open their more lucrative casino facilities.

The policy is being backed enthusiastically by the Travellers International Hotel Group, which is a joint venture between Alliance Global Inc. and Malaysia’s Genting group, but has received a mixed response from certain investors, some of whom are eager to partake of the higher returns from gaming operations.

“The Pagcor requirement for a minimum number of hotel rooms per slot machine and gaming table is positive for both individual gaming license holders and the entire (tourism) sector,” said the report, authored by CLSA’s Leo Venezuela.

He argued that Pagcor’s requirements forces the license holders to be more disciplined with their capital expenditures (since investments in hotels with longer payback periods will make investors more financially prudent), while muting local opposition to gaming since the construction of hotels would suggest the presence of more foreigners rather than locals patronizing casinos.

The four license holders that form the backbone of Pagcor Entertainment City are the SM group, through its gaming- and leisure-oriented unit, Belle Corp.; Japan’s Aruze Corp.; Enrique Razon-owned Bloombury Corp., and Travellers International Hotels.

Up to $4 billion in investment is expected to be poured into the project which will rise on a 120-hectare reclamation area along Manila Bay.

I said and not just this so it means I do not mind any Fil-foreigners coming in.

And we Pinoy try to be hospitable to anyone from abroad whether Pinoy or not as long as they are courteous and know how to respect the locals.

But again, it is most Fil-foreigners coming in and to be honest, it is all the same. We would like to see some new faces as well. And of course we would also like to promote our country and culture to foreign faces as in "foreign".

The likes of the Younghusband brothers, Solemn Heusaff, Aliyah Parcs are still Pinoy even if they have either British, French or Dutch in them.

Tourist arrivals for 2011 soar to 4 million

MANILA CITY, METRO MANILA—Some 3.9 million foreign tourists visited the country in the past year, breaking previous tourism records.

The figure showed an increase of 11.28 percent from 2010’s figure set at 3.52 million and it also surpassed the initial target of 3.7 million for foreign arrivals, according to the Department of Tourism (DoT).

Most of the tourists arrived in November and December, with 337,021 and 394,567 arrivals, respectively.

Majority or at least 46 percent of the visitors are from East Asian countries.
Korea had the strongest single market with a share of 925,204 arrivals, followed by Japan, 375,496 visitors; China, 243,137 visitors; and Taiwan, 181,738 visitors. Tourists from Singapore and Malaysia reached 331,672 visitors.

by JACKY LYNNE A. OIGA | Manila Bulletin | Thursday | February 9, 2012 | 7:09pm

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Tourism (DoT) announced Thursday that the number of tourist arrivals in the country has reached 3.917 million in 2011, surpassing the government’s target of 3.7 million.

Officials said that the figure is about 11.28 percent higher than the 3.520 million posted in 2010.

“When the industry exceeds expectations as it had done last year, we feel very encouraged. And with the overwhelming response to our new brand campaign ‘It’s More Fun in the Philippines’ launched last month, we know that we have broken ground on crowdsourcing. The people’s campaign will help bring more numbers,” said Secretary Ramon R. Jimenez Jr.

Jimenez added: “As infrastructure challenges and policy bottlenecks are successfully worked on, marketing the Philippines as a tourist destination and investment haven will be greatly facilitated under the leadership of President Aquino. Optimistically by 2016, the country would have sufficient capacity to host 10 million visitors.”

Helped by gains in all regional markets, the country capped 2011 with 394,567 tourists arriving in December, strongest among all months last year. November proved to be the biggest gainer, improving 19.80 percent from the same month in 2010 with 337,021 visitors.

Ten out of the twelve months last year saw figures north of 300,000. The 2011 figure also includes returning overseas Filipinos, who numbered 207,152.

Korea remains to be the strongest single market for tourism with 925,204 arrivals for a 23.62 percent share of all visitor volume.

Other East Asia regional markets are also increasingly thriving like: Japan (375,496 visitors, 9.59 percent share), China (243,137, 6.21 percent) and Taiwan (181,738, 4.64 percent) ranked 3rd, 4th and 5th among all individual markets respectively, while Hong Kong’s 112,106 visitors were good for 9th place.

Visitors from the US, the Philippines’ second-largest tourist market, totaled 624,527 for 15.94 percent of all tourist traffic. Australia and Canada experienced double-digit growth to 170,736 and 117,423 arrivals, 6th and 9th most among all countries

So, President Aquino and Grace Lee are sweethearts? Presidential spokesperson stated the "development". :)

Palace says PNoy-Lee 'romance' to help boost tourism
ABS-CBNnews.com

MANILA, Philippines - Malacañang believes that the blossoming romance between President Benigno Aquino III and Korean television and radio personality Grace Lee would attract more Korean tourists to the country.

Presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said the "development" between Aquino and Lee would "add interest" among Koreans.

"Certainly, we would hope so," Lacierda said.

"But remember, Korea and the Philippines have enjoyed a warm friendship and during the past few years, they have been sending their students here to study English. This new matter, development between the President [and Lee] would certainly add interest from the Korean visitors," he added.

Lee, 29, has said that her family is not bothered by the attention they are getting after Aquino admitted that he is seeing her. The President turned 52 on Wednesday.

"I don't feel the pressure but I'm learning my lesson as I go along," she said in an interview.

They also need to really work on ferry links with Taiwan and Vietnam to encourage more tourism, with regards Vietnam it would encourage other asean tourists to use their cars and drive there and vice versa it will also encourage western back packers to take that extra step and go on to the Phillippines which hey currently don't really frequent, and once you have good roro ferry links with Taiwan well northern Luzon's tourism industry and industry as a whole will likely start to realy take off .

Expansion of Kalibo Airport sought
Aklan, Philippines (Xinhua) -- Experts and officials from the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) is to start a discussion here on how to expand the Kalibo International Airport, as it hardly meets the growing number of tourists to Boracay, a world-famous resort, a local official said Monday.

Most of the tourists coming to the airport for Boracay Island. "We want to expand the terminal building as well as other facilities to cater to more international flights," said Percy Malonesio, an official of the CAAP local branch.
The CAAP believes there will be more flights from Asia in the years to come as Boracay was recently named as the best white beach in Asia.
Boracay Island has more than a dozen unique beaches and many coves. Most of these boracay beaches have the same powdery white sand for which island is famous around the world. Travel website TripAdvisor rated recently Boracay island in Aklan province as the second best beach destination in the world and the No. 1 in Asia for the second year in a row.

Too far I think.

Not that far at all Northern Luzon to southern Taiwan is barely 400 kilometers and Subic Bay to Da Nang is about 1200 kilometers while a ferry trip from Manila to Zamboanga is 1000 Kilometers, where i am at there is a ferry link from Belgium to northern England which is about 500 kilometers and there are other lines from England to Sweden and criss crossing the Baltics which easily reaches several hundred kilometers England to Spain etc .

Btw lol "ships can sail around the world" .

a6idirvY5IU&feature

TnNT9z4_axw

Obviously they would have to be new large modern roro ferries like these that regularly link Europe togheter, ive actually done quite a few of these ferry trips some of them are overnight like that Silja lines ship which connects Sweden to Finland it can easily take a few hundred cars dozens of trailer trucks buses etc .

There is no real technical impediment to creating such routes between Luzon and Taiwan and Vietnam or even Hong Kong indeed there are plans last ive read to have links with China, but i simply think that Taiwan and Vietnam should not be forgotten .

Obviously the costs of these modern mega roro ferries are in the hundreds of millions a piece but that's not much more than an Airbus A380, so i think that as long as the respective governments concerned back up the creation and financing of these new international ferry companies that they could find the financing for them .

This also ties in imo with an opportunity to completely redevelop and update Manila south harbour into a full international roro ferry and cruise ship port and terminals turning it into a regional cruising hub, domestic ferry links could instead dock at Batangas which imo can become the main internal or domestic ferry and cargo port between Luzon and the rest of the southern Phillippines .

http://www.isabellestravelguide.com/images/Port_of_Miami_1.jpg
http://www.isabellestravelguide.com/images/Port_of_Miami_1.jpg

This would make sense as the south harbour is adjacent Intramuros and Luneta park and is close to Pagcor city, Mall of Asia and of course the rest of the Metro and the airport, this will provide Intramuros a great reason for being completely rejuvinated and restored it could then become a completely pedestrian shopping district like they have in Europe usually centered in old city centers .

There could perhaps be one or two access roads but transport whitin the zone would primarily be once again based on tramvia's and horse driven coaches, further afield this could also then tie into rejuvenating the Pasig river area all the way around Malacanang palace and park .

+ it simply makes sense to finally link the country to the rest of Eurasia's highway system and just think of the sheer number of jobs wealth and tourists that such a project would bring, don't forget Manila's long history of maritime links with the world going back hundreds of years hopefully Manila can once again proudly wear the title "Pearl of the Orient" .

Kai Tak Cruise Terminal

Kai Tak cruise terminal, is a cruise ship terminal currently under construction at the site of the former Kai Tak Airport. Its completion date has been delayed to 2013 due to re-tendering. Following an international competition, Foster + Partners was invited to design the cruise terminal. The new terminal will have capacity to berth two large 360-metre-long vessels, which disembark a total of 5,400 passengers and 1,200 crew, as well as anticipating the demands of cruise liners currently on the drawing board .

Hong Kong's Secretary for Economic Development and Labour, Stephen Ip, says the Government will focus on the development of a new cruise terminal at Kai Tak to help Hong Kong become a regional cruise hub. It will be built by Dragages Hong Kong Limited and site formation is being completed by Penta-Ocean Construction Co., Ltd.

Sea urchins are currently not endangered but:

Importance in the Environment

Like most creatures, sea urchins are vital for the survival of other living creatures surrounding them. They have many predators and due to this, if the sea urchin population decreased, the sea creatures that feed on them might begin to die out as well. A few predators that feed on sea urchins are sea otters, star fish and humans. However for there to be a healthy balance in their environment, it’s very important that the population of sea urchins do not decrease or increase all that much. This problem occurred in the 1980’s in the Caribbean when the sea urchin population began to increase at an extremely rapid rate. At one point there was almost a density of eighty sea urchins per square meter. This immense number of sea urchins began to eliminate the sea weed which lived in the same area. They were also eroding the coral reef. Luckily before any huge damage had occurred, there was a mass die-off of sea urchins in the area believed to be caused by a water-carried disease. Sea urchins have also been reported to cause erosion of reefs in places such as the eastern Pacific, Kenya and the Red sea. So although sea urchins are important to the survival of an ecosystem, they can also become dangerous in great numbers.

Endangered?

At the moment sea urchins are very populous and located all over the world in many different oceans. Therefore they seem to be in no immediate danger of disappearing or becoming endangered in general. However in the past sea urchins have shown mass mortality due to an increased amount of pollution in the oceans and also due to an increased amount of fishing by humans. Hurricanes and a rise in the temperature of water have also wiped out a great amount of sea urchins. Evidently sea urchins are very susceptible to change, and with global warming, which is changing the temperature of the oceans and increasing the amount of tropical storms, they may become endangered in the future.

hmmm...kinda agree.....but what do Batanes can offer high end tourist that cannot be found somewhere else....batanes surroundings is more like the European grasslands and meadows. Korea,Taiwan and Japan also has similar environment....because if it cannot offer something quite "unique" the distance and price itself can turn off even high end tourist.....as O can see it batanes tourism can easily be regulated as it is an island and quite remote....just limit the hotels and resorts then tourist cannot go there in masse..

We are a society of high moral values. Unfortunately, alot of people in government and those working in public service are not!

Yun nga the problem is these people are the ones getting elected and is giving our country a bad name.

Finally it's time! But even with the black travel ban there is still a number of HK tourists visiting our country.

I hope it will be lifted very soon. HK is having a "spat" with Mainlanders now. Calling each other names....

I hope more Chinese tourists would come to the country....

BATAAN NUCLEAR POWER PLANT (wasted resources)

"Still reeling from Fukushima, the plant’s owners have decided to turn it into a tourist attraction, featuring a tour of the containment building. The plant, which has never generated a watt of electricity, is now producing revenues from the flow of tourists from the Philippines and abroad, especially Japan. Tours of the plant, whose owners sold off the uranium in 1997, are booked months ahead, said Dennis Gana, a spokesman for the utility. "

Yeah, HK even put up an ad calling "names" against the Mainlanders. Too much, right?

I hope that with the lifting, more tourists from HK would come to the country, visit Cebu, Palawan and Boracay. I intentionally did not mention Manila hehehe although I knew that the loyal tourists in Binondo are from HK.

oh so Philippines is participating in the competition now.. or still a special performance only just like in the past years?

what I don't like with the pyromusical in MOA is that it takes weeks to finish all participants... it would be nice it can be done in a night... though that would definitely generate a lot of pollution! eheheh..

Being the host, PH will not be a competitor but on a special performance.

The name of the beach is "Seven Commandos". Yes, they have a problem with naming things haha. There's a Big Lagoon, a Small Lagoon, a Secret Beach and a Hidden Beach (Islands so beautiful, they should've been named with more pizzazz). But the poor naming conventions are hardly an issue, the islands speak for themselves. :)

I heard about this too, but what HK people are really most concerned about is migration and the growing trend of people from the mainland going there just to give birth. At 50k per year (most likely this will go up pa), baka one day sila na ang majority ng HK.

Xplore Philippines with the capital city Manila to Bohol, being a more quite and calming city. The city offers the fragrance of fresh greenery and a scenic feast for the eyes.Explore Boracay an exquisite beach destination with never before seen pure white sands and blue waters and Manila a blend of the cultural diversity with development which helps in retaining its charm.

What was that freaking skycraper ride at the rooftop? Is that a similar ride as that one ontop the CN Tower in toronto?

El Nido, Palawan

The most beautiful Philippine destination I've been to so far. In my opinion only Batanes can compete to this. But I hope it stays secluded, difficult to reach and unfestered by mass tourism.

Can you also share mga magkano budget to spent for 3 to 4 days travel here and if you have idea of a nice and a bit affordable place to stay here that would be awesome. I might arrange a tour for my foreign friends next time and i really like to include this places. TIA!

Hottest up-and-coming Asian destinations revealed

Source (http://www.news.com.au/travel/news/hottest-up-and-coming-asian-destinations-revealed/story-e6frfq80-1226270015254)

MOVE over Kuta and Phuket - Naha, Palawan and Busan are among the next hot spots for adventurous travellers.

Hotel booking site Agoda.com has named the fastest growing spots in its annual Fresh Destinations list, based on bookings, customer reviews and ratings over the past year.

Agoda.com president Robert Rosenstein said opting for a more local experience often meant a deeper understanding of local customs, more authentic regional cuisine and great value for money.

Here are its picks:

Naha, Japan

Located on Okinawa Island in Japan's south, the island is considered ``the Hawaii of Japan''.

It has a warm tropical climate, white sand beaches, a relaxed atmosphere and plenty of diving, snorkelling and water sports across the archipelago.

Its customs and its dialects are distinct from those of mainland Japan.

Palawan Island, Philippines

Around an hour by plane from Manila in the Philippines, Palawan Island made the list for its national parks, secluded bays, limestone cliffs, rainforest, coral reefs and surrounding islets and islands.

Reefs in the El Nido Marine Reserve in particular showcase rich biodiversity, while sunken wrecks around Coron add interest for divers.

The forests of Palawan are similarly striking, with waterfalls, lush flora, exotic wildlife and stunning vistas from countless hike-able vantage points around the island.

Pangkor Island and Pangkor Laut, Malaysia

These two islands, on the north-west coast of Malaysia, were highlighted for their beaches, Dutch colonial ruins, temples and fishing villages.

The islands are low-key tourist destinations popular with domestic holidaymakers and offer a more relaxed alternative to Langkawi.

Busan, South Korea

This cosmopolitan city on the south eastern coastline of South Korea, was named for two reasons: seafood and sea.

The city hosts an annual International Film Festival and has a made a bid for the 2020 Summer Olympics, so its profile is expected to rise considerably.

Khanom, Thailand

On the western edge of the Thai Gulf coast, Khanom is a small fishing village known for its long, deserted stretches of beach, forests, mangroves and sheer limestone mountains.

It is close to Koh Samui, which is visible from Khanom's beaches, though it's far less developed than its flashy island neighbour.

Visitors can kayak to nearby islands, dive coral reefs, join fishing or dolphin-spotting tours, enjoy fresh seafood, or just laze on the beach.

The area also includes nearby islands and their surrounding corals, caves, waterfalls and mangrove systems.

Mui Ne, Vietnam

A five-hour bus trip from Ho Chi Minh City, just north of the coastal town of Phan Thiet, Mui Ne comprises a fishing village and a long beach.

It has red dunes, white dunes and otherworldly rock formations.

Mui Ne's fishermen are unique for their round basket-shaped boats.

It was recognised for its accessibility, affordability and its uncomplicated fishing village ambience.

Tagaytay, Philippines

On the highlands of Cavite province, just over an hour's drive north of Manila, Tagaytay is an high-altitude summer retreat.

Its drawcards include Taal Lake, a crater lake within the nearby Taal Caldera, which can be explored by tricycle, boat and horseback.

It also has historic buildings, flower farms, golf courses and waterfalls.

Hualien, Taiwan

On the east Taiwanese coastline, Hualien is a small city bordered by the Pacific Ocean on one side and Hehuanshan - literally `Joy Mountain' - on the other.

In the winter, Hehuanshan becomes blanketed in snow, and year-round the marble cliffs and steep canyons of Taroko Gorge make for compelling and challenging hiking.

In summer, whale and dolphin-watching tours are popular.

Hot springs, lakes, villages, temples and river rafting are also within close range.

Phetchabun, Thailand

A few hours' drive north of Bangkok, Phetchabun province is a region of forests, mountains, waterfalls, river valleys and unhurried villages.

Protected national parks are home to wildlife such as Asian golden cats, Asiatic elephants, barking deer and black bears, while Petchabun city offers traditional Thai attractions like temples, markets and street dining.

Nam Nao National Park offers trekking up various peaks and plateaus, with nature trails through pine forests and glades for the less energetic.

Phetchabun is as yet a largely untapped resource for those looking to explore unspoiled scenery and enjoy idyllic mountain landscapes.

Foodies can sample locally-grown tamarind and authentic ifkhanom chinnf (a gravy noodle dish) or head to Si Thep historic park for a glimpse of the area's ancient Khmer heritage.

Malang, Indonesia

Malang is a large city in East Java with ancient Mataram relics and Dutch heritage.

Its cool climate, bougainvillea-dotted avenues and colourful landscapes have earned it comparisons to Europe, an image in dramatic contrast to the nearby volcanic mountain range of Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park.

Malang has colonial buildings, villages, golf, ancient temple ruins and Javanese relics.

Local food is simple and far from spicy. Meatballs and noodles - or both in one bowl - are local signatures.

Don't look now, folks. :D :D But we're raking in foreign tourists, esp the Japanese, from a very unlikely Tourist attraction - the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant. Many visitors wanna see how a real Nuclear Power Plant looks like on the inside... ;) this paper has a wide audience and is sure to attract many science enthusiasts and the curious worldwide.

MORONG, the Philippines — It is the nuclear plant of regrets, of would haves and could haves, to a generation of Filipino scientists who had dreamed of bringing nuclear power to this energy-starved country.

The Bataan Nuclear Power Plant here sits about 45 miles west of the nation’s capital across Manila Bay, nearly at the tip of a peninsula rich in historical resonance and volcanic activity. Completed in 1984, it seemed destined to become the first operating nuclear plant in Southeast Asia.

Uranium, flown in from the United States on a chartered Boeing 747, was trucked in, and by 1986, the operators were ready for a penultimate step called core loading.

Then came the Chernobyl disaster, which led the Philippines to mothball the Bataan plant. Last year, just when years of patient lobbying by Philippine nuclear power advocates appeared to be paying off, the Fukushima disaster occurred.

“We could have been the first nuclear country in Southeast Asia, but we were not able to do it,” said Mauro Marcelo, a nuclear engineer at the National Power Corporation, the state-owned utility. “There are several dates when we could have become a nuclear country, but every time a catastrophic event happened. We don’t need to hire nuclear experts but feng shui masters to get rid of the bad luck.”

Still reeling from Fukushima, the plant’s owners have decided to turn it into a tourist attraction, featuring a tour of the containment building.

On a recent tour, the Bataan plant’s supporters were clearly cheered by the surprising success of the tourism project. They now made their case for nuclear power to captive audiences, describing it as critical to the Philippines, whose economy is hobbled by one of the highest electricity rates in Asia because of its reliance on fossil fuels.

The Philippines, the first country in Southeast Asia to consider nuclear power, they said, was now surrounded by nations, like Vietnam and Malaysia, that are moving to adopt nuclear power. The Philippines, outpaced by its neighbors in economic development, would fall further behind.

Yeah the naming of the islands isn't really original, but as you said the islands speak for themselves! :) Anyway i'm looking forward for my coming island hopping tour in El Nido in April. May you can recommend some "island hopping tour organizer". How about El Nido Art Cafe?

Yes, I heard about them. They are well-reviewed. However, we didn't get our tour from them hehe

I don't there is any ride on CN tower, it's just an observation tower, atleast that's what I remember from the last time I was in Toronto.

The rides on top of The Regency Tower in Cebu is just one of the very few all over the world. The only one I knew about actually is the one in Las Vegas Nevada. I knew of nothing else. There could be one in EU but I am not sure.

ohhh those kids are creeeepy! nice videos though. These are one of the best tourism promotion videos about the Philippines! :)My friend doing a documentary about Manila and Palawan in Portuguese. One of her main goal is to strengthen our ties to Latin America (esp. Brazil) and to exchange our cultures across the Pacific Ocean. I hope you guys like it and leave a comment/like it on Youtube. I am sure she will appreciate it and she will be coming back again to visit in April! :)

^^

The Youtube is owned by her brother tho! (shameless promotion)

t7ylq64W0UI Hey guys. An afterthought - since the DOT might be budget constrained, perhaps Filipino Netizens could lend a helping hand? The videos we posted were done by Foreigners like the first vid I posted was done by an Indian, the 2nd trio were done by Germans judging from the title whilst the 3rd by Animo done by a Brazilian. Youtube reaches a wide audience and I must admit I did enjoy watching the activities and interactions with the tourist hotspots, I found it more enjoyable than watching still pictures... what Filo Netizens could do is urge their guests to post vids of outdoor activities or post their own vids of outdoor activities. Example, videos of dolpins racing thru the water is more spectacular than the same dolphins caught only in still photos.

^^I think Regency Hotel in Fuente Osmena, Cebu

I've never been there myself but from what I gather it must be in Cebu. Can anyone confirm the location of this tower ride? :D :D

What was that freaking skycraper ride at the rooftop? Is that a similar ride as that one ontop the CN Tower in toronto?

It's the EDGE COASTER, Regency Hotel, Cebu City. I've tried the ride last year and it was a thrill esp. if the seat tilts at 45 degrees! Opens from 9 AM or 10 AM up to midnight.

Was that edge walk in CN tower exactly the same in Regency Hotel? Because I remember stepping on a glass flooring up in CN tower, but it's nothing like a walkway that goes around outside the structure, like an orbit kinda thingy....

Yes, its pretty much the same, you walk outside the roof of the observation deck on a harness...but at a much higher altitude of course ;). The glass floor is still there. It takes some nerves to step on that thing.

Korea to dispatch police officer to Philippines

Seoul (The Korea Herald/ANN) - Korea's National Police Agency plans to deploy an officer overseas to help with cases involving Korean expatriates, officials said Wednesday.

.......................................

The senior inspector or superintendent deployed to the county will be responsible for the safety of Korean expatriates and tourists in the country and the arrest Korean fugitives.
.........................................

"There have been calls for increased protection by police as the number of fugitives and incidents involving Korean expatriates rise," said one police official.

===========================================================================

Hopefully other countries wont follow suit because there has been quite a rise of crimes against westerners too.

Meanwhile, Filinvest says the company would simultaneously develop its retail property at the South Road Properties (SRP) in Cebu. The seafront SRP is just across the street from the 36-hectare, P25 billion residential space area developed by the group’s residential property arm Filinvest Land Inc.

The SRP area, to be built on reclaimed property, will be given a “beach side” atmosphere. At its heart will be an outdoor sand box where nearby residents can come and relax. And as a throwback to Cebu’s rich history, the company also plans to bring in a replica of an old Spanish galleon to add to the area’s overall flavor.

Not to mention the company’s plans to put out a three-story statue of national hero Lapu-Lapu, which was recently removed from Rizal Park for being taller than Rizal himself, will also be a key attraction amid the stores and restaurants.

Like the Festival Mall, the company plans to take advantage of the SRP’s natural surroundings to create more customer-friendly surroundings.
Once all the work is done, Antonio says the company hopes that it would “raise the bar” for malls in the country. “This is our way of giving back to our community,” he says.

MT. Apo is Davao’s top attraction

Getting a bigger bite from the tourism pie, Davao now draws a surging stream of adventure seekers and nature lovers from both here and abroad as it positions itself as the country’s main ecotourism site.

Davao, located at the southeast part of Mindanao, is blessed to have Mt. Apo to shower the region with an abundance of natural resources.

The challenging climb to the Philippines’ highest peak traverses through creeks, ridges, boulders and waterfalls with an amazing panorama of rainforest and fauna, making it the province’s top tourist destination.

The province also offers extreme sports like white water rafting in Davao river; ziplining in Zip City, the longest zipline in Asia; wakeboarding in Deca wakeboard park, the first cable wakeboarding facility in Mindanao; and diving in Davao Pearl Farm.

Other ecotourism sites are various mountain resorts in Samal and Marilog District, tubing site in Sta. Cruz, and Crocodile Park in Ma-a.

Whether it is for adventure or to simply smell the flowers, Davao is a dream destination for all nature lovers.

2012 Environmental Performance Index

Environmentalists on Sunday said that when it came to environmental protection and addressing pollution, the Philippines had made strides in past two years, based on the Environmental Performance Index (EPI) that measures the environmental policies of 132 countries.

According to the EPI, the Philippines now ranks 42nd among 132 countries when it comes to protecting and managing the environment, placing the country under the “strong performer” category

The EPI was prepared by Yale and Columbia Universities in collaboration with the World Economic Forum and Joint Research Center of the European Commission.

The latest ranking represented a jump for the Philippines over its performance in 2010, when it was ranked 50th and listed as a modest performer.

Switzerland tops list

Based on the 2012 results, the Philippines retained its ranking of eighth in the Asia-Pacific region, higher than South Korea, Australia and Singapore, which ranked ninth, 10th and 11th, respectively.

The EPI measures a country’s performance in maintaining environmental health and ecosystem vitality. The data were based on studies across 10 policy categories, including air and water pollution, climate change, biodiversity and forest management.

The studies also took into account human-related indicators, such as child mortality and access to drinking water and sanitation.

Switzerland topped the list of governments addressing the problems of sustainable management of natural resources and air and water pollution.

The bottom five places in the ranking were occupied by South Africa, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan and Iraq—all grappling with deteriorating environmental resources.

The EPI showed that the Philippines’ environmental policies in the past decade had improved. Specifically, the Philippines received a high mark in managing agriculture, with an overall rank of seventh. The country also made valiant efforts in decreasing air and water pollution, the study said.

However, the Philippines’ positive performance did not mean that the country excelled in other matters involving environmental protection. The study pointed out that the Philippines still faced problems of deforestation and proper watershed management.

The Expo was the same as last year but has some nice booths and places to choose from. The exhibitors other than The Philippines are from around Asia especially from Malaysia, Thailand, HK, Singapore, Taiwan, Japan and South Korea. Though South Africa and Lesotho had their booths as well.

There are discount fares but mostly around Asia especially cheap fares to Thailand, HK and Singapore during Holy Week.

Airport terminal fee to go back to P750 :ohno:

by Zen Hernandez, ABS-CBN News
Posted at 02/20/2012 2:22 PM | Updated as of 02/20/2012 2:27 PM

MANILA, Philippines - After enjoying a lower terminal fee for almost a month, passengers will have to pay the higher terminal fee of P750 again soon.

According to the Department of Transportation and Communication (DOTC), Manila International Airport Authority will reapply its application for imposing an additional P250 to the current P500 terminal fee.

Transportation Secretary Mar Roxas said the extra funds are needed for operations and maintenance of the airport terminals.

The terminal fee for international flights at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) went down from P750 to P550 effective February 1.

The Department of Transportation and Communication (DOTC) also debunked the notion that the NAIA imposes a lot of fees, unlike other countries.

Roxas explained the terminal fees and travel taxes are incorporated in the airplane tickets purchased in other countries.

In the Philippines, airlines refuse to incorporate the said fees due to the many exemptions such as the OFW and senior citizen privileges, enjoyed by a number of passengers.

The DOTC, however, plans to fix this issue within the next 6 months, by implementing a system where all passengers are required to pay all fees upon purchase of a plane ticket. A refund receipt will be provided for passengers, who are exempted from payment.

The government is working to rehabilitate the 30-year-old NAIA Terminal 1, which has been named by a website as the world's worst airport.

Korean Guide Confesses Part in Philippines Kidnapping:bash:

A Korean tour guide has been arrested over the kidnapping of four Korean tourists in the Philippines who were released after their families paid a total ransom of around US$21,000 last week.

According to a spokesman for Chungnam police on Friday, the 33-year-old identified only by his surname Choi told investigators he had conspired with Philippine police officers and a Korean broker in Manila to kidnap the tourists, receiving part of the ransom as payment afterwards.

Choi and 12 Korean tourists arrived in Manila last Saturday for a four-day vacation during which four were abducted by local gunmen.

See-all-you-can at CCP festival for P20

MANILA, Philippines -- Your P20 can go a long way at "Pasinaya 2012," the Cultural Center of the Philippines' (CCP) one-day multi-arts festival on Sunday, February 26.

The amount allows a person to watch all they can from over 100 performances from the country's different performing arts groups. The CCP said all of its venues will be used by more than 2,000 artists from dance, theater, visual arts, literature and cinema during the festival.

Venues will be "zoned" according to genre, it added.

The performances will be led by resident companies of the CCP -- the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra, the University of Santo Tomas Symphony Orchestra, the Philippine Madrigal Singers, Tanghalang Pilipino, Bayanihan Philippines National Folk Dance Company, the Ramon Obusan Folkloric Group, Ballet Philippines, Philippine Ballet Theater, and winners of the National Music Competitions for Young Artists.

"The festival will be highlighted by a performance by Dinagyang's Tribung Lunok of the Iloilo City National High School," the CCP said in a statement.

Aside from shows, Pasinaya 2012 will also feature crash workshops, film screenings, visual arts exhibitions, and activities for children.

Those who do not want to wait in line, meanwhile, may get a "fast pass" for P200 each.

For more information about Pasinaya 2012, visit www.culturalcenter.gov.ph or call (02) 832-1125 local 1800.

Desert island dream in remotest Philippines

Monday 20th February 2012, 3:44am
After more than 24 hours’ travel, Jemima Sissons arrived on the paradise island of Ariara

Jemima Sissons

AS the plane rumbles along from Manila to Busuanga in the Palawan peninsula in the Philippines, the smiling stewardess at the front starts playing a game of “Show and Tell” to an enraptured audience, in the absence of TVs to divert us. First person to hold up a... pen, wins a thermos flask. Next person to hold up a... passport gets a cool bag with a natty airline design on. Half the passengers shoot their arms up waving them furiously. I ask my next-door neighbour if this is normal? “Why, what do you do in England when you fly?” she says, as though I am completely mad. I join in with gusto.

I then take one look below at the endless clear blue sea punctuated with perfect islands, white sands glinting and coral reefs abundant, and the jet lag from the epic journey (three flights, and more journeying to come) disappears. As we come to touch down over the islands, the sun casting a glint across the turquoise waters, Bing Crosby starts crooning on the sound system “I’m dreaming of a White Christmas”. This is surely the most surreal flight of my life.

Busuanga airport is a tiny cement building, cows grazing alongside, waxy palms shooting into the sky. From here it is a jolly van ride to the jetty, the young drivers merrily singing along to Beach Boys and Hotel California, the oldies are clear favourites here.

I don’t look much of an adventurer; crumpled shirt and mucky white jeans, but I certainly feel like one, as I step onto the graceful hull of the KJ. The boat, a local Banka (fishing boat with outriggers), is the last stop before we finally reach our paradise isle. We change into our bikinis and sarongs and tuck into an unbelievable lunch of kilawin na tanigue, a sort of ceviche using Spanish mackerel (not as nasty as it sounds, it’s rather like tuna), marinated in coconut milk and chili, washed down with a sweet mango smoothie.

The final destination is the private island of Ariara. Owned by English couple Charles and Carrie McCulloch, if you are looking for a secluded Robinson Crusoe getaway - with manicures, jet skis and gourmet food thrown in – it doesn’t get better than this. Bought in 2005 and opened as a hotel last year, Ariara sleeps up to 17 in seven villas and cottages, and comes fully staffed. The island is based around the philosophy of feeling like it is your own home, but with all the comforts of a hotel. There is all you expect such as air-con, clothes are washed and pressed daily, the staff are wonderful; the only downside is that not all rooms have wifi, which is annoying, though all communal areas do. Yet unlike most other private islands, it is (relatively) affordable. A week at full capacity works out at an exceptionally reasonable £195 per person per day, which includes all meals (minus booze, petrol and massages), and watersports

After feasting, we set off, stopping at a breathtaking James Bond-esque lagoon, flanked with towering volcanic shards. After 24 hours of travel (although it’s possible to significantly shorten travel time with private planes), a swim has never felt so good. A four-hour gentle ride on the KJ (owned by the McCullochs for use on the island) or hour-long zippy speed boat ride then takes you to Ariara.

Top three destinations

In 2010, Hong Kong, Singapore and London were the most popular city destinations worldwide. Hong Kong topped the ranking with almost 20 million arrivals in 2010 and an outstanding 18% increase compared to 2009. The booming economy of Hong Kong coupled with its growing appeal as a travel and tourism destination is drawing more business and leisure travellers each year. In 2010, mainland China remained the largest source market for Hong Kong, accounting for approximately 60% of arrivals.

S. Korea tour guide arrested over Philippine kidnap

by AFP | Manila Times | Friday | February 17, 2012 | 14:35

SEOUL: A South Korean tour guide has been arrested over the kidnapping of four compatriots by Philippine gunmen, who allegedly included local policemen, police said Friday.

The 33-year-old identified only as Choi was held Thursday during an investigation into the kidnapping of the Korean tourists in Manila this week, police said.

The guide told investigators he had conspired with Philippine police officers and a South Korean broker staying in Manila, a police spokesman in the central city of Daejeon told AFP.

Choi and 12 South Korean tourists from a sports club in Cheonan, 90 kilometres (55 miles) south of Seoul, arrived in Manila last Saturday for a four-day vacation, according to a police statement.

Four of them guided by Choi left their hotel in Manila on Tuesday morning for last-minute shopping. But they were forced into two cars by five gunmen including Philippine police officers outside the hotel, it said.

They were released after their families paid a total ransom of 24 million won (around $21,000) through a Korean middleman living in Manila, Yonhap news agency said, adding Choi later shared the ransom with Philippine police.

Police confirmed a ransom was paid but refused to say how much.

Yonhap said the four had been kept for seven hours in a room apparently used by police. It said Philippine police had rounded up 10 people for their involvement in the case.

The Philippines is a favorite tourism destination for South Koreans and thousands also work, reside or study there.

Last November authorities rescued three South Koreans kidnapped in a remote part of Mindanao island.

Rachel Weisz amazed by the beauty of Palawan
Posted on February 18th, 2012 under Beauty of the Philippines

Hollywood actress Rachel Weisz was so reportedly smitten by the beauty of Palawan that it wouldn’t be a surprise if she even considers buying real estate property there.

According to Jun Juban, local producer of the film, “The Bourne Legacy,” the actress even specifically told him that she can “live” in that side of paradise, “forever.”

It isn’t only Weisz who felt affection for the island province known for its unsullied beaches, says Juban.

“The [film] contingent, including the [rest of the] cast who visited the island, has been very expressive with their awe and amazement,” he said.

The cast and crew of the much-hyped action film moved to Palawan from their filming locations all over Metro Manila a couple of weeks ago, aiming to shoot several scenes of the movie there.

Juban hinted that the “end part” of the movie might also be filmed in Palawan.

In any case, he asserted that the scenes would show the beauty of Palawan to millions of viewers all over the world when the movie opens in theaters sometime in August.

He said tourism in the Philippines will be enhanced – if not already – because of the movie.

“There are close to 200 staff, crew and actors involved in this film.

This means 10,000 hotel room nights spread in two major hotels in Manila. This definitely exceeded initial projections,” he said.

The local producer thanked the government for its support, particularly Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa Jr., the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority, the departments of the Interior and Local Government, Finance and Tourism and local officials of the cities of Manila, Pasay, Navotas, Quezon and Marikina.

Juban said that there are plans to have a premier showing in Manila.

“We have been part of the Filipino film industry for three decades and it’s only now that a top action franchise movie is featuring Manila as Manila. Once we see ‘The Bourne Legacy’ on the wide screen worldwide, our fellow kababayans will surely be very proud,” he said.

Starring alongside the multi-awarded Weisz in the much-hyped action movie are actors Jeremy Renner and Edward Norton.

Hey guys.

Galera event seen to attract 3,000 foreigners

MANILA, Philippines -- Tourism-dependent Puerto Galera is expected to attract 3,000 foreign tourists and cash in some P20 million during the three-day 2nd Malasimbo Music & Arts Festival in March.

Hubert d’Aboville, president of the European Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines, said the second staging of the festival is another major boost to the public-private campaign to increase tourist arrivals in the country.

“The festival is one of the ways we are lining Puerto Galera as a prime tourist destination in the country. The festival itself has the potential to become the biggest of its kind in Asia,” d’Aboville said.

The event is being supported by the Department of Tourism and National Commission for Culture and the Arts.

Huffington Post lists Boracay as one of the world's top party islands:

http://i.huffpost.com/gadgets/slideshows/210345/slide_210345_710424_large.jpg?1329834117

1. South Beach, Miami
2. Tel Aviv, Israel
3. Surfer's Paradise, Australia
4. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
5. Koh Phangan, Thailand
6. Zanzibar, Tanzania
7. Ibiza, Spain
8. Boracay, Philippines

With some of the most gorgeous beaches in South East Asia, the island of Boracay is the latest hotspot and it oozes sensuality and relaxing grooves.

Unlike some overcrowded islands, Boracay is still relatively uncovered and that alone makes the island even more alluring.

White Beach is home to a few hippy reggae bar and zen cocktail lounges sprawled over the white sand, exuding a soothing ambience like no other.

Cocomangas is the palpitating heart of the island's night scene as its dance floor gyrates with energy on the otherwise peaceful island.

New weekend getaways

http://shops.st701.com/resources/index.php?c=article&aid=20759&title=New-weekend-getaways

Tired of trawling the stalls of Chatuchak in Bangkok? Itching for an alternative beach break other than Bali?

There are alternatives for weekend getaways out of Singapore, other than the usual suspects.

Think Manila, Timor-Leste, Hainan Island, Bandung and Ho Chi Minh City.

With flight times of between two and four hours, comparable or even cheaper airfares, and more low-cost carriers opening new routes to cities in the region, these destinations are attracting more Singaporeans as alternative shopping, spa and beach weekend getaways.

Ms Yvonne Du, marketing manager for online travel agency Zuji Singapore, says Manila, for example, has experienced a phenomenal year-on-year growth of more than 50 per cent for bookings for weekend holidays.

'Many Singaporeans are taking advantage of the lower flight fares and affordable accommodation to enjoy the beauty of the unspoiled beaches in places such as Cebu and Boracay in the Philippines. Manila is the main aviation hub that connects to other provinces,' she says.

The price of a return trip from Manila on Jetstar Asia costs from $188, slightly cheaper than the $231.90 fare for Bangkok on the same airline.

Feb 19, 2012 early morning. :D :D Well, well whaddya know? Bumaba na pala ang Airport Terminal Fee!! Dati rati Php750.00 ngayon Php550.00 na lang :pepper: Ayaw tumabi kasama naming kalbong kano travellin w/ the wifey & 2 small kids kaya ayan full moon. Looking beyond in the background, one can see majority Delta airline pax sa pila in the Immigration side.

The nice thingy about Manila Xrays is that you dont have to haul out your laptops and iPads unlike most airports.

Tinamad na ko kumuha ng pic, pero bakit tuwing gagamit ako ng banio sa NAIA T1 may tubig naman?? The tap water running from the mens room opposite Tinderbox had a moderate flow, huh. There was also water running from the taps dun sa dalawang Mens room I randomly checked sa Arrival. Wala lang.

I was pleasantly surprised that I had to pay P550 instead of the usual P750. I asked the nice lady at the counter when will it go back to original 750. She is not aware.

Another pleasant surprise: There was a very short queue at the immigration hall. I think there were only 10 people lined up ahead of me. It was strange. Around the same time, several widebodies will be arriving/departing namely:

Singapore Airlines - B777-200
Saudi Airlines - B747
Eva Air - B747
Thai Airways - A330
JAL - which I think is a B767

Maybe an improved process overall.

A must to all travellers: Whenever possible, do check in online. Most airlines have a separate queue for those who did. There is usually nobody lining up for it. Also, you can arrive at the airport 60 or 90 minutes before departure.

I would think it is because the 1st 4 are really the hottest hotspots for partiers...

@Mercato, I'm surprise that moonhead didn't help brighten up the surrounding

BTW, that portion of NAIA needs to be renovated as soon as possible also as it is the first thing passengers would see once they finished checking in. Just fresher looking wall would do, maybe metal pannels that looks either like wood or tile would help and easier to install???? Oh wait, looks like the vinyl floorg needs to be relaced right away as well.

If that is the case with Boracay, then it is good for the area's tourism industry.

But it is better to keep commercialization be limited to Boracay and not other well known beaches say El Nido in Palawan.

For me El Nido should maintain it's Identity as Philippines last frontier and Palawan in general since Boracay Island is just a tiny piece of Island it needs an alternative other than beach so Party is Born, water sports and others tourist related activities.

Tourism revenues seen to hit P152B (http://www.malaya.com.ph/02242012/busi3.html)
By GENIVI FACTAO

Tourism revenues are expected to jump 17.82 percent to P152 billion this year, with the continued growth in foreign tourist arrivals and helped by a strong marketing campaign.

Rolando Canizal, planning director of the Department of Tourism (DOT), said last year’s tourist receipts grew 18.34 percent to P129 billion from 2010’s P109 billion revenues.

"We target P152 billion tourist receipts this year, based on the assumptions of increased number in arrivals from Korea, United States, Japan and China; the slight increase in length of stay from 8.2 to 8.4 nights and the increase expenditures," he said.

The average stay of foreign tourists here is longer compared with Singapore and Malaysia, where they stay only 3 to 4 days.

The DOT will kick off the first international marketing using the "It’s more fun in the Philippines" brand early last month when it participates in the Berlin International Travel Bourse on March 5 to 11. The event is one of the biggest travel exchanges in the world.
