That's not a good idea. You have to pluck it near to an area where there is a large concentration of people, where domestic tourism would be rabid. Plus the main international gateway is in Luzon too. Sucks that you have to ride a second plane just to go to Disneyland if I'm from say, Vietnam.
But then again if I'm from Vietnam and I want theme parks I'd just go to Hong Kong (Disneyland, Ocean Park), Singapore (Universal Studios), Tokyo/Osaka (Disneyland, Fuji Q, Universal Studios, others), Seoul (Universal Studios [soon], Lotte World) and Shanghai (Disneyland [soon]). Diba?
Vietnamese tourists do one main thing and one main thing only: SHOPPING. They hardly even go sightseeing, or go to theme parks. They LOVE shopping.
-SNPKLSDMBLDR- April 20th, 2012, 10:02 AM AFAIK, no Universal Studios will be built near Universal Studios Singapore for the next 30 years.

LuckyLady April 20th, 2012, 10:27 AM Taiwan wants Phl to waive tourist visa requirement
By Pia Lee-Brago (The Philippine Star) Updated April 20, 2012 12:00 AM Comments (6) View comments
MANILA, Philippines - Taiwan asked yesterday the Philippines to reciprocate the visa exemption extended to Filipino tourists.
Taiwan Economic Cooperation Office (TECO) Representative in Manila Raymond L.S. Wang said Taiwan has a visa waiver for Filipinos with valid visas issued by countries like the United States, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Korea, and Schengen Convention countries.
“We ask for reciprocity that the same visa waiver be given to Taiwanese tourists going to the Philippines,” Wang said.
According to TECO, around 130,000 Filipino tourists out of six million foreign travelers visit Taiwan every year, while about 180,000 Taiwanese visit the Philippines annually.

pede ba natin pagbigyan ang Taiwan para lalong mapagalit ang China:lol:
ok na ok ako dito. i am always pro taiwan. i don't want Taiwan to be overtaken by China. If Taiwan will be taken by China tapos na tayo kasi mapapaligiran na tayo ng kaaway. Yung ulo at dulo natin kanya na ng china. If we can only entice more Taiwanese businessman it would be really good for our manufacturing sector. remember guys in China, almost more than 10+million jobs were created due to Taiwanese investments. And this is just a conservative estimates based on registered investments. If those small biz or unregistered investments are counted i think the figures would be even double. China's manufacturing status in the world is non existence without Taiwanese investors. Btw, almost 50% of the population of Taiwan is anti china and their policy before is TO GO SOUTH. That means we were in their investment radar before but due to some unknown reason this go south policy was stopped. I hope we could revive this policy. Taiwanese products unlike china is better in terms of quality. I hope the gov't will allow this reciprocal visa to the Taiwanese.

Aanhin mo naman ang sobrang gandang infrastructures (gaya ng ibang nasa thread) kung hindi naman kasing ganda ng pakikitungo sa kapwa. We need both, but we already have one. Infrastructures, madali lang yan. Ang attitude, mahirap ayusin yan. :)

'Bourne' star says people make Philippines great
http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/entertainment/04/20/12/bourne-star-says-people-make-philippines-great
MANILA, Philippines – More than two months after filming "The Bourne Legacy" in the Philippines, Hollywood actor Jeremy Renner apologized for the heavy traffic caused by the film shoot on the streets of Manila.
In an exclusive interview with ABS-CBN News, Renner said he intends to visit the Philippines again because of the hospitality of its people.
"Philippines is great, man. But what makes it great -- the islands, yeah, tremendous, nothing better -- but it's the people. People made it great. That's why I'll go back,” Renner said.
“We're done with 'Bourne' now so traffic is back to normal. I'm sorry for that, guys.”
To accommodate the filming of “Bourne” in the Philippines, a series of road closures and traffic rerouting schemes were implemented in the latter part of January and early February.
Following weeks of filming, the “Bourne” producers and crew thanked the Philippines for its cooperation, and apologized for the road ruckus caused by unexpected inefficiencies on the “Bourne” set.

My plan to visit Taiwan is definitely in the bag soon. I have a US visa so it's easy.
Interesting.....about that percentage of the population who are anti-China. However, I read in the news that the current head of Taiwan does not have a strong position against mainland China or somehow not so strong about pro-independence move.
Yes, Taiwanese tourists who visit the country are increasing.

when are you visiting Taiwan? do you have a particular place to visit in mind? i think you don't need a visa anymore since you have US. Yes that % is very obvious especially during elections. Many prefer to maintain the status quo. President Ma can't afford to antagonize any party, KMT or DPP since support of both parties are strong.

Philippines Makes Play as a Gambling Mecca
Local Businessman Is Confident Country Can Overcome Rivals, Violence, Poverty
By KATE O'KEEFFE
MANILA—The next casino battleground is taking shape in this unlikely locale, on a dusty strip overlooking a harbor with fiery sunsets. And in an industry dominated by international moguls, a local businessman who made his billions as a ports operator is betting he can win.
Enrique "Ricky" Razon Jr. says the Philippines will become the world's next gambling Mecca—a destination to rival Macau and the Las Vegas Strip.
The stakes are enormous. PricewaterhouseCoopers says a "fundamental shift" in the global casino industry's balance of power means Asia will overtake the U.S. next year as the world's biggest regional market in terms of revenue. The Chinese territory of Macau already rakes in $33.5 billion in annual gambling revenue—more than five times that of the Las Vegas Strip.
But Mr. Razon and his rivals will have to overcome the Philippines' history of poverty, natural disasters, kidnapping and terrorism. In 2010, a former Manila police officer hijacked a bus and killed eight Hong Kong tourists.
Mr. Razon says he is spending $1.2 billion—$200 million of it his own money—to build his casino resort. His Bloomberry Resorts Corp. plans to open the high-end Solaire Manila at the beginning of next year. The resort's first phase is expected to have 300 gambling tables, fine dining, meeting facilities and VIP villas overlooking a palm tree-lined promenade on Manila Bay.

we still have hope in Taiwan. Remember almost 50% of the population is anti china. This is the very reason why i really hope our country could maintain a more friendlier relations with Taiwan. HK is already under China so it's useless but Taiwan is still an independent country not governed but also bullied by China:bash:

Better make some real surveys first. If you say blood is thicker than water then japanese and koreans will side with china as well?? Hostorically japan, china and korea one and the same. Besides if you scour the news, you'll know how angry hk people are with the chinese govt and the mainland chinese people in general. If you say taiwan will side with the mainland then why would taiwan spend so much money for their defense budget? Why would taiwan side with the US and not with china. These are facts. Dont generalized just because hk people and taiwan people are singkit. Dont stereotype.

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) - At least three foreign airlines are moving their operations to the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3 (NAIA-3) by next year, decongesting NAIA-1.
Tourism Secretary Ramon Jimenez said Delta Airways, Cathay Pacific and Emirates will be joining the local carriers currently operating at NAIA-3.
Currently, NAIA-3 is home to Gokongwei-led budget carrier Cebu Pacific, as well as Philippine Airlines’ budget airline Air Philippines.
"That will significantly reduce congestion at the terminals," Jimenez said. "Pag bukas na yung NAIA-3, makakalipat na yung ibang airlines so luluwag na yung NAIA-1."
Jimenez said the government is sprucing up NAIA-3 faster than it is doing with NAIA-1 to facilitate the transfer. But he pointed out that both airports should be running at optimum capacity by next year.
NAIA-3 was mothballed for six years because of legal woes, before it finally opened in 2008.

Who says I am stereotyping?
There are voices inside Taiwan saying that if war breaks out between the Philippines and the ugly Chicoms, they will side with the Chicoms.
Why would you look for Taiwan as an ally anyway when they have a competing claim as well? Illogical.
And your claim that China, Korea and Japan is historically the same is a very naive viewpoint of East Asian history. You, dear, should not generalise.

that voices are just from mainlanders in taiwan don't be duped about it. the majority of taiwanese don't wan't china they'd rather maintain the status quo. unlike their mainlander relatives, the taiwanese are not warmongerers. If we push taiwan to the brink they have no choice but to cling to china which is not really beneficial for us in any ways. in case of of war taiwan strategically is beneficial for us. of course this is just my opinion.

Native Taiwanese (Formosans and Chinese born in Taiwan do not have loyalty China) wants independence from China. They love the US and Japan more.
People of China, Korea and Japan have this mutual animosity with each other.

MANILA, Philippines – The Puerto Princesa Underground River was officially inaugurated as one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature on Saturday.
The inauguration ceremony, held at the One Esplanade in Pasay City, was attended by President Benigno Aquino III, Environment and Natural Resources Secretary Ramon Paje and Interior and Local Government Secretary Jesse Robredo.
Puerto Princesa Mayor Edward Hagedorn thanked the President for personally campaigning for the inclusion of the underground river, saying that the simple act of getting nominated was difficult.
Hagedorn said the success of the underground river is not only for the province of Puerto Princesa but for the whole country as well.
President Aquino, for his part, said the recognition of Palawan’s underground river will boost tourism in the province and in the country and will create job opportunities.
Aquino also stressed the importance of preserving the natural resources of the country.
The head of the New 7 Wonders of Nature Foundation Dr. Bernard Weber presented the plaque to Aquino.
Dignitaries from other countries like Vietnam and Korea also attended the inauguration.
Various artists, including Noel Cabangon, Joey Ayala and Sarah Geronimo, performed at the event.
Also making it to the list of new world wonders are the Amazon, Halong Bay, Iguazo Falls, Jeju Island, Komodo, and Table Mountain. -- Report from Gretchen Malalad, ABS-CBN News

MANILA, Philippines—Foreign and local airlines on Friday welcomed the government’s decision to stop charging airlines for the overtime pay of customs and other personnel manning airports and to adopt a 24/7 operation as practiced worldwide, saying this would make the country more competitive and hence attractive to business and tourists.
“This singular act speaks volumes in terms of governance. An airport is a gateway to the country and its services, including the enforcement of customs laws, are the responsibility of the government, not the airlines,” said lawyer Bayani Agabin, spokesperson of the Board of Airline Representatives (BAR).
Last month, Finance Secretary Cesar Purisima told customs officials that international airports would go 24/7 instead of the present 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. shift and directed them to submit their manpower requirements for budget purposes.
Purisima’s move also resolved the dispute between BAR and airport customs personnel who have even included their meals and transportation in their overtime charges.
“The amount charged to airlines are excessive because if four airlines land, they charge four times for overtime, meals and transportation for the same hour that they serve,” Agabin said.
The feud between the airlines and airport customs worsened after the latter decided to double their charges in 2005, Agabin said.
Customs officials explained that the increase was due to the doubling of the exchange rate to around P50 to a dollar then from around P25 in the mid-’90s.
Told that customs people do not spend in dollars, they replied that it was irrelevant since airlines earn in dollars.
The question now, he said, is whether the airport customs people would comply with Purisima’s order.
“This issue was already resolved by former Customs Commissioner Lito Alvarez who ordered a 24/7 shifting operations at the airport effective January 2011. Incumbent Customs Commissioner Ruffy Biazon also supports 24/7 shifting operations as part of P-Noy’s ‘matuwid na daan’ so it was a surprise why airport customs recently sent new billings for overtime, meals and transportation,” he said.

Priest wants stop to 'aswang' hunt

MANILA, Philippines – A Catholic parish priest in the town of Pozorrubio in Pangasinan has urged residents to put a stop to a monster hunt and instead strengthen their faith in God.
Fr. Hurly John Solfelix said he is planning to include in his sermons that there is no such thing as an “aswang,” a vampire-like creature in Philippine folklore.
Residents of Barangay Villegas in Pozorrubio believe that such a creature exists after several animals went missing in their village.
Armed with spears and machetes, the residents have been scouring the streets in search of the “aswang.”
Police, meanwhile, have advised residents to avoid leaving their homes at night as it may give robbers the opportunity to steal their belongings.
Chief Inspector Satur Ediong said the residents should leave the pursuit to the cops.
The residents once again took to the streets last Tuesday night after some of them allegedly saw the creature.
“Dati ‘di ako naniniwala hanggang sa nakita ko kanina,” said Rino Igoy, one of the residents.
Police, however, continue to warn residents that it may only be a modus operandi by criminals who want to take advantage of unattended homes. -- Report from John Germono, ABS-CBN News Dagupan

MANILA, Philippines - President Benigno Aquino III complained of Philippine media's too much focus on negativism and crime stories, which he said, could lure away tourists from visiting the country.
He said this is an example of the negative trait of crab mentality, saying the Philippine media is dragging the country down.
In a speech before the Philippine Press Institute's National Press Forum and annual membership meeting, Aquino cited as an example media's highlighting of the travel advisories issued by foreign governments, saying it is also the local media that serves as basis for the reports of the diplomatic posts.
"Tayo lang yata ang kaisa-isang bansa sa mundo na nagbabalandra ng mga negatibong travel advisory sa sariling mga pahayagan. Ang paglabas ng ganitong mga babala ay nakasalalay sa persepsyon ng ambassador na naninirahan dito sa Pilipinas; isa sa pinanggagalingan ng kaniyang opinyon ay ang mga balitang nakakalap niya mula sa diyaryo at telebisyon,” he said.

I agree to this... dito sa Singapore you would rarely see negative news.. pinaka negative na yung breakdown ng MRTs... and that makes the impression that Singapore is a clean and peaceful place...
the other side of this situation though, when I talk with my local colleagues they say that their media only select good news but they have in their minds that their government is too corrupt that big people close to government officials control every business in the country..

You are absolutely right... In my other comments from other forums (not sure here in SCC), I have been mentioning na yang pagpapalabas sa balita kung ano 'yong mga crimes na nangyayari at papaano nagawa ay totally hindi yan productive.
efriend April 24th, 2012, 04:34 AM PNoy is correct. What I really hate is when our local news media headlined stories regarding travel advisory coming from other countries (like U.S. and U.K.) for their own citizens. Do they think the Filipinos even care? What Filipinos care will be travel advisory FOR Filipinos traveling abroad especially for our OFWs. Did our local media banner a story on travel advisory for Filipinos during the London Riots? I can smell the crabs from afar.

By MIKE U. CRISMUNDO
April 13, 2012
PILAR, Siargao Island, Surigao del Norte – The municipal government here together with the Department of Tourism (DOT), Surigao del Norte provincial government, 1st Congressional District of Surigao del Norte, Philippine Surfing Federation, and the five leading sports fishing club in the country are joining hands for the holding of the “2012 International game Fishing Tournament” in this town.
The municipal government on Friday started mobilizing the more than 10,000 local residents to make sure that the world billfish tourney of the 5th Siargao International Game Fishing Tournament will be successful.
Along with regional, provincial, and municipal officials, a daily program of activities and nightly fellowship dinner with anglers and other guests are being prepared by the local government and organizers along Pilar Boulevard here.
Several Police Tourist Desks had been established in strategic areas of the “Paradise Island” of Siargao to extend immediate assistance to tourists and guests.
During the four-day activity, the DOT, along with several provincial and municipal officials also lined up tour activities for tourists and visitors who would want to explore and experience the beauty and natural riches that Siargao offers.
Meanwhile, more than 100 anglers from the United States (US), Australia, Japan, Taiwan, China, United Kingdom, Singapore, Malaysia, Russia, and the Philippines are set to participate in the four-day activity that will start on April 26, with a grand opening program prepared by the organizers and the local government unit.

I totally agree with Pnoy on this.

Correct, Actually our local media does'nt know how to create a local aura of good news.As Observed from ABS CBN. everytime they start with the night news. It always go's like this. tatlong holdaper nanloob sa bangko at nakapatay, banggaan sa SLEX dose patay, Palengke sa QC patuloy na nasusunog. See how everthing sound so negative at the beginning. hope the media changes how they report bad news and would focus more on the good news rather than spread more negative news which can really affect the morale of an ordinary person

No. of tourism workers highest in 10 years
April 24, 2012 | Manila, Philippines
http://www.bworldonline.com/Research/economicindicators.php?id=0558
One out of every 10 workers in the Philippines is in tourism, and the proportion is expected to increase as the tourism industry continues to expand.
Data from the Labor Force Survey of the National Statistics Office showed that 3.7 million Filipinos were working in “tourism-characteristic activities” in 2010, or 10.2% of the total employed in the country. This was the highest level in 10 years.
Majority of those working in the tourism industry were employed in the passenger transport sector, which accounted for 40% of tourism employment or almost 1.5 million workers. Restaurants came in second with an estimated 926,000 workers, followed by the recreation, entertainment and cultural services sector with 362,000 workers.
The World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC), an international organization of travel industry executives, however, has higher estimates of employment in tourism. The WTTC recorded 4.4 million workers in the Philippine tourism industry in 2010, or a share of 12.10% to total employment. Based on WTTC data, the highest level of tourism employment was recorded in 2007 with 5.1 million workers, or a share of 15.10%.
Jorge V. Sibal, dean of the University of the Philippines School of Labor and Industrial Relations, said the growing share of tourism to overall employment “is not yet a boom.”
“The figures are still small but growing,” Mr. Sibal said, adding that the Philippine tourism industry has promising prospects.
Data from the National Statistical Coordination Board showed that the share of tourism direct gross value added to aggregate gross domestic product or GDP averaged 5.8% for the period 2000-2010. In 2010, the industry’s contribution stayed at 5.8%. — Trishia P. Octaviano

Cebu lechon will go head-to-head with the world's best at the World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest in Memphis, the Department of Foreign Affairs said Tuesday.
A team from Marco Polo Plaza hotel in Cebu led by Carlos Dingding Jr. will enter lechon de leche in the competition. According to event organizers, winners will get $110,000 in prizes as well as bragging rights of having the best barbecue.
"Teams adorn their areas with elaborate decoration, trophies attesting to their boasting rights, and as one can imagine, clever and creative team names," organizers of Memphis in May said on their website.
Chef Claude Tayag has also been invited to Memphis in May to share Filipino cuisine with attendees. Tayag's dishes will be on the menu of Chez Philippe, a restaurant at the Peabody Hotel in Memphis, Tennessee on May 11 and 12, organizers said.
His dishes will also be served during the intermission of a performance to showcase the Bayanihan dance company and a presentation of Filipino martial art Arnis.
Tayag, a renowned chef, runs Bale Dutung in Angeles City. The restaurant "is known as one of the Philippines’s gastronomic centers," DFA said.
The pili nut will also be launched as a gourmet product to rival the macadamia nut in the U.S. market, the DFA said.

Sleepwalker April 26th, 2012, 10:32 AM I don't know where to put this, but this is indeed one of the best things in Philippines - sharing.
It is common for Filipinos, that no matter how poor we are, we always find ways to share...A poor man will ask you "Kain tayo", even if he does not have much on his plate.
A balut vendor won't hesitate pulling part of his hard earned money to donate to the victims of typhoons/earthquake.

Pinatubo in 1992 (which wiped out most of the economy in Zambales), San Felipe is now home to a small group of local surfers.
Up until October 2011, San Felipe barely had any accommodations for surfers who would take the 3 hour trip from Manila. As a result, there were customers only on weekends, and the small food kiosks and local surfboard rental and lessons shop had 0 customers on weekdays. Life and business were slow.
Then in November 2011, The Circle Hostel opened and started offering affordable and simple beach-inspired accommodations to back packers. Using hammocks, tents and a large nippa hut design, crossed with a school dormitory, the Circle began to attract attention and became a space for social interaction. "There are no strangers" is the hostel's mantra, and the place is always bristling with the energy of friendly youth. It has never had an empty day since its opening.
What makes this so special is that management of the Circle, headed by Ziggie Gonzales, has decided not to sell food and other basic amenities, nor to hire his own surf instructors.
"We want to keep the community happy and partner with them so that everyone has a chance to make money," he says. "We earn on accommodations, and they earn from everything else the surfers spend on."
Indeed, the local community has started to benefit. A local food kiosk owner fondly called Mommy Phoebe commented that, "Since the Circle opened, we started getting more customers." Mommy Phoebe has had to increase her dining space to accommodate this change in customers. Even the surf instructors are hired more often and boards are usually sold out on weekends.
When asked why he designed the business model this way instead of trying to make more money, Ziggie replied, "We want to partner with them so that they are happy with us. If they are happy with us, they will protect us and our customers. Additionally, it allows me to keep a smaller staff and more manageable inventory line as I don't have to worry about spoilage and hundreds of SKUs on stock."
This combination of eco-tourism, coupled with local partnership, has really evolved into sustainable business for the community.
Now on their 2nd weekend festival, Ziggie has spearheaded a beach clean up as part of the activities in the big event in an effort to show the locals how to protect their environment which provides them with their livelihood.
More than just a hostel providing accommodations, The Circle also hires locals to manage its facilities, providing jobs to college undergrads. The family directly involved now has a steady source of income and has resumed sending their children back to school.
In retrospect, the story of The Circle provides us a valuable lesson - that good business is sustainable business that helps the community and the environment. There are no strangers - and this applies to customers, employees and the local community.
Ady001 April 26th, 2012, 01:07 PM In Warsaw, Ambassador Edgardo R. Manuel led the Filipino community here in Poland in inaugurating a new major advertisement for the Philippines on a Warsaw city tour bus! :okay:

CEBU, Philippines - Residents of Lapu-Lapu City again reminisced the defeat of foreign invaders 491 years ago during the re-enactment known as “Kadaugan sa Mactan” which was held at the Liberty Shrine in Barangay Mactan yesterday. The 12th Kadaugan sa Mactan gathered about 5,000 spectators who trooped to the shrine as early as 9:00 in the morning.
Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Paz Radaza said the battle of Mactan left a legacy which credited Lapu-Lapu as the first native of the archipelago to resist Spanish colonization and made him the first Filipino hero.
He also stressed that the Kampilan (sword) and Kalasag (shield) of Lapu-Lapu will always symbolize courage, confidence and bravery of the Filipinos.
He added that those who may be tempted to challenge our country’s sovereignty should let the courage and heroism of Lapu-Lapu remind one and all that the Filipinos are brave and noble people who will never allow invaders to trample our sacred shores.

the glimpser April 29th, 2012, 03:51 AM PH pulling out all stops for ADB meeting
MANILA, Philippines – Over 4,300 very important persons in the world of finance will be in the Philippines on May 2-5 for the 45th Annual Meeting of the Board of Governors of the Asian Development Bank, and the government is pulling out all the stops to make sure that they will have a great time.
Even their spouses have not been overlooked, with the government hosting a number of tours in and around the city to give them a better sense of what the Philippines is all about.
Under the “Journey to Our Past” package, guests will be taken to the historic district of Intramuros in the city of Manila. Among the places to be visited are Fort Santiago, San Agustin Church and Casa Manila. Guests can also choose to visit the Metropolitan Museum of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, which houses some of the country’s national treasures, as well as Rizal Monument, among the most famous landmarks in the Philippines.
There is also a tour titled “A Glimpse of Philippine Heritage, Pre-colonial Treasures and Development”, which will take the guest to the Ayala Museum, Bonifacio Global City and the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial, which is the largest cemetery in the Pacific for fallen American and Filipino soldiers.
Guests who would like to do some shopping instead can opt for the “Reminisce and Explore” package, which includes a visit to the Asian Development Bank headquarters and the nearby Tiendesitas shopping center operated by Ortigas and Co.
Those who want to venture farther afield also have a number of tours to choose from.
The “Sacrifice, Heroism and Freedom” tour, for example, will take visitors to the tadpole-shaped island of Corregidor, which figured prominently during World War II, being the site of one of the fiercest battles in Asia-Pacific.
Then there’s the “Panorama and the Quaint Old Town” tour that includes a viewing of Taal Volcano – the smallest volcano in the world – and a visit to the quaint old town of Taal in Batangas that is full of historical sites, from old houses to churches and buildings dating back to the late 16th century.
Foodies may choose to go for the “Craftsmanship, Industry and Culinary” tour of Pampanga, which is known for its culinary expertise. And aside from the food, guests will also be taken to the San Guillermo Parish Church and the town of Betis, which is known for its elaborately carved furniture. Guests may also want to take home a typical parol made in Pampanga.
Another option is to take the “Beautiful Countryside Experience and Art” tour that features a visit to Villa Escudero and the shop of Ugu Bigyan, who is known for his pottery skills.
Finally there’s the “Rediscovering the North, Adventure and Eco Tour” that will take guests to the former Subic Bay Naval Base and Clark Air Base, which have since been transformed into thriving free port zones.

I saw the first episode of CNN's Eye on Philippines this morning, hosted by Ms. Anna Coren. Location: Intramuros, Manila with Manila Skyline as the backdrop. Beautiful.
It was indeed refreshing that our country is featured in a positive way. They showed the ADB funded e-tricycles to lessen pollution, the booming call center industry, and the good insights from Lance Gokongwei on why the businessmen are putting their money back to the country from abroad. Ms. Coren cited the HSBCs' study on the future of the country in 2050 and the desire of the people and the government to regain the Philippines' former glory as a wealthy nation just like in 1950s.... :)
That was the first time I saw the "Its More Fun In the Philippines" TV ads.

In an interview with GMA News Online, Evelyn Macayayong, DOT’s marketing communications officer, said 772,989 tourists arrived in the country during the first two months of 2012.
According to Macayayong, it is the first time for the country to have reached the 400,000 mark for any given month.
Asians comprise the most number of tourists who visit the country. The top tourists are nationals from Korea, China, the United States, Japan, Taiwan, Australia, Canada, Singapore, and the United Kingdom, Macayayong said."

Parang bitin.....ang bilis pati ng transition ng mga pics hindi kaagad maiintindihan......parang hindi gaanong pinagisipan tong commercial na to....transitioning pictures with occasional video then background music, sobrang simple, wala gaanong creativity...even a high-school student can do this as long as he has those beautiful pics...sa youtube lang dami ng ganitong similarly styled/formatted video which are mainly done by mere individuals....naka-compensate lang talaga yung magagandang pictures and catchy phrases ....MAGKANO KAYA GINASTOS DITO :ohno:...well the good news is even before the launch of this ho-hum TV add record breaking tourist arrivals is coming every month!!:banana:
Mercato April 30th, 2012, 03:27 PM Yes, they don't allow cameras or IPADs inside the casinos. You would have enjoyed the show at 360 degrees bar inside.
People dressed well at Republiq and Opus Bar. They now impose a dress code. :)oh okay. till next time then. :D Johannesburg? Bakit marami bang black people?
teka, at bakit hindi ka magkanda ugaga sa kalilingon? ngayon ka lang ba nakakakita ng maraming cute sa SEAsia?:lol:No, not about the africans but it's about the high end shops and establishments. Well, that's exactly how these casino mini-cities look like anywhere in Johannesburg, Macau or Las Vegas. Who would've thought it could be pulled off right here in Manila?
Eat their freakin hearts out.

All of what you said is what DOT actually intends it to be. It is simple but catchy and creative. Also, notice the question at the end of the tvc, it's sort of encouraging everyone, may it be filipinos or foreigners to contribute to this so called "meme" so that everyone may take part and engage to this tourism campaign. Tourism is all about individual experience and not about the "scripted" and "choreographed" tvc's most advertisers abroad tend to do. I believe what makes advertising successful is the engagement of the audiences which helps in heightening recall and salience of a campaign.
A tv commercial as simple as this may encourage even the children to take part in promoting the beautiful places of the Philippines -- interesting -- tourism from a child's point of view.
I'm a Communication Arts graduate from UP so I know about this. :)

Yeah yeah....ang tanong....sa ganitong kasimpleng commercial MAGKANO GINASTOS DITO?? ang tagal bago lumabas ito at ito lang ang kinalabasan...and are you really sure this simple, bland add is effective that would entice foreigners to come??....remember the first objective of this tourism campaign is to attract them to come here...NOT TO ENCOURAGE THEM TO PARTICIPATE....when they come here and have one blast of a time THATS THE TIME WE ENCOURAGE THEM TO PARTICIPATE AND PROMOTE OUR COUNTRY MORE....so far seeing that commercial it didnt create much excitement and interest from me even if im from here and knowing how beautiful and exciting this country is....what more to foreigners??.....like in real life....how to you attract potential mate??....by just being simple?....even good looking guys lose out to those sweet talking not-so-good-looking men.....
One more thing .....theres nothing creative about that video...the pictures maybe but that whole video add...naaaahh...like I said high school level lang yan ganyang workmanship...

This is just a copy paste of what i posted from my fb.
I love how DOT uses the strategy of "meme" --- "an idea, behavior or style that spreads from person to person within a culture" (Graham, 2002).
It is simple but creatively doable. If you notice the question at the end of the tvc, it's sort of encouraging everyone, may it be Filipinos or foreigners to contribute to this what I call a "meme-chain." DOT intends everyone to take part and engage to this tourism campaign. Tourism is all about individual experience and not always about the "scripted" and "choreographed" tvc's most conventional advertisers tend to do. I believe what makes advertising successful is the engagement of the audiences which helps in heightening recall and salience of a campaign.
To those giving negative criticisms, they say it's too simple for a highly-budgeted campaign, I say, there's more to come and coming up with the simplest campaign is hell in advertising. Remember, the people behind this campaign are not the kinds that you can just pick up from the streets. These are educated, creative, and marketing-oriented people and they know what they're doing. Kudos BBDO!
One more thing .....theres nothing creative about that video...the pictures maybe but that whole video add...naaaahh...like I said high school level lang yan ganyang workmanship...[/QUOTE]
Kaya nga oh ikaw na rin ang nagsabi na high-school level, that's more fun because even the high school students themselves can help promote tourism themselves.
About sa sinabi mong bakit kailagang pati foreigners dapat magcontribute? Kaya nga "meme" kasi dapat mapasa sa iba nilang mga kababayan na it's more fun in the philippines. pictures are the evidences. kaya nga "meme"
About sa sinabi mong budget. The budget is not solely for the mere the product or tvc but the creative juice and time na nilaan. Advertising requires big budget talaga. And beside, simula pa lang to ng series, marami pa yan masusundan.
And about dun sa "good-looking men" any personal relationship is out of DOT's promotion.
Mejo maliwanag na ba?

I was reading too fast so i didnt get it at first but i said in the next post that i understood it. < about the good-looking thing.
I also understand and accept your argument about putting emotion to ads as i know that emotion is very important in ad.
You said your point. I said mine. There's a meeting point somewhere there.
Mine is from what I learned in UP. It's the newest kind of advertising strategy especially when the medium is not just TV but also myriads of tech nowadays.
We cannot expect sudden increase (the level of overtaking other asean) of tourist arrivals overnight. It's still very new, and let's just see the results in the coming months. If it succeeds, meaning it's effective. Also, the success of tourism cannot only be based (though important element) on this tvc as there are a lot of other media to get this campaign viral.
It is already given that PH is more beautiful than other asean nations so what we're doing now is supporting that already-given-gift through our campaign.
When "It's more fun in the Philippines" campaign was released, there were a lot of nega reactions but they were all proven wrong as the tourism industry booms more than expected. So I believe this too will be successful as well. Cheers!

Yeah we both want our tourism campaign to succeed...my point is that we are a late player of this game so we must do a lot of catch up and being mediocre wont do it....well anyway I hope our tourism campaign will take off with the help of people passionately loving their country...I hope this is just the start and they could come up with more "vigorous" "convincing" "creative" and "aggressive" campaign ad and strategy...but i firmly believe the time has come for my Philippines...OUR PHILIPPINES TO SHINE ABOVE THE REST! :):)

Unfortunately, Palawan also does have a Mandarin name and might also be found in ancient maps. :D :D
The name “Palawan” – most probably - was given by the Chinese as far back as the 9th Century. They called it PA-LAO-YU, or “land of beautiful safe harbour”. Others believe it came from the Indian word “Palawans” meaning “Territory”. The popular belief is that “Palawan” is a corrupted form of the Spanish word “Para agua” because the main island’s shape resembles a closed umbrella.

So what about the Chinese map? How they wanted to call the Philippines is their business not necessarily ours. Mai was the name for Chinese Mindoro but still Mindoro to us.
The Philippines was already in Ptolemy's map. That was in 140 ad, way before the first Chinese trader hit our shores. The Philippines was not part of Cathay (name for China in Ptolemy's map). Ptolemy may have referred to the Philippines, as Isles of Chryse (Golden Isles or something.) Rizal mentioned Ptolemy's map. The etymology of Palawan could be anything, but I would go with the Indian because the Indian Hindu Buddhist influence in the country was earliest, deepest, and longest influence before the Spaniards came, between late 7th to the 15th century. Therefore, Palawan could definitely Indian etymology.
Enough of this Chinese maps, names and nonsense.
wino April 30th, 2012, 09:14 PM ^^ very interesting old history. Kept me looking for more about it on the net. :D
Nabartek April 30th, 2012, 11:17 PM Reasoning that just because Palawan, has etymological roots from Chinese, does it necessarily mean it should be part of China
That is like India claiming the Visayas because of its sanskrit origin
If we go by influences, that gives then India the right to claim large part of China and Saudi, the Xinjiang province because of religious influences

SMC buying binge goes on with 8 more deals
Philippine Daily Inquirer
11:43 pm | Monday, April 30th, 2012
(Last of two parts)
When Ramon Ang set San Miguel Corp. on its current path of aggressive diversification, he told an incredulous public that he would double the revenue of what was then Southeast Asia’s largest food and beverage company by 2015.
One of SMC’s most ambitious projects, however, is directly related to its recent investment in PAL.
According to Ang, he hopes to break ground before the year ends on a 4,000-hectare development, which will have, as its primary tenant, a four-runway international airport and a modern air terminal capable of handling as many as 100 million passengers a year.
The project will also have its own business district, a commercial and residential area, and will apply for ecozone status to accommodate locators in the manufacturing space.
It will also have its own electricity source, which will be cheaper than the present modes provided by commercial power producers.
He declined to identify its exact location, saying only that motorists can reach the destination “in 10 minutes from EDSA” using SMC’s proposed elevated roadway that cuts across Metro Manila on a north-south axis.
Ang said the project is meant to provide the country with an alternative to the aging Ninoy Aquino International Airport, which has reached the limit of its expansion, and the Clark International Airport, which is too far from Metro Manila.
“It will be a mini-city,” Ang said, saying that PAL’s base of operations would eventually be moved to that new location.
The total project cost, he said, including the elevated tollway, a modern air terminal, runways and the acquisition of land will be in the vicinity of $5 billion.“Can we afford it? Of course we can afford it,” Ang declared.

Caap to recertify global operations, standardize training of domestic carriers (http://businessmirror.com.ph/home/nation/26584-caap-to-recertify-global-operations-standardize-training-of-domestic-carriers)
THE Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is requiring all Philippine Airline Operators Certificate (AOC) holders to be recertified, a long and tedious process that would set back attempts by the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (Caap) to gain Category 1 status at the soonest time possible.
The requirement was an offshoot of the changes made in the Philippines’s Civil Air Regulation (CAR), following the abolition of the Air Transportation Office and replaced by the current Caap in 2008.
Instead of recertification of all AOC holders, the Caap would focus, in recertifying all international operations first and the standardization of all training for all domestic carriers.
This was the proposal forwarded by Caap officials during their visit to FAA in Washington two weeks ago.

Qatar Airways’ feisty CEO Akbar Al Baker took the opportunity to niggle rivals, lambast IATA and slam governments for stifling business opportunities during a spirited aviation seminar at Arabian Travel Market.
(snipped)
"We’ve been very successful in choosing the right destinations to fly to - our decisions are based mostly on economic reasons. Most times we get it right but when we get it wrong it’s as a result of governments trying to stifle business opportunities. We had 90% load factors flying to Cebu (Philippines) but the government had a bad tax policy for airlines so we withdrew."

It's real all right but certainly not something that we would like to emphasize to the world. Part of the solution to end this "pagpag" dependency is to attract more tourists and foreign investors. And the world's stage isn't the right venue to air our dirty laundry. To those who know little of the Philippines, we're probably lumped all as pagpag eaters.

Im so glad that cnn chose to focus on the philippines in their EYE ON series but c'mon there are a gazillion topic about the phils why choose the papag issue??!?!?!?! Though its true that papag eaters do exist but how many really does it?? We got employees who live in the squatters area in tondo but they have not even encounter people eating papag. Gadamit!. I usually describe the negative things about our country if only to bring everyone else back to reality but this papag issue by cnn is just totally out of line. CNN is being seen worldwide and this papag issue will certainly leave a mark to any viewer, heck even piers morgan felt aghast at the very thought of eating and selling food from garbage.
Ang mga taong kumakain at nagbebenta ng papag ay mga taong napaka tamad na. Ayaw ng magbanat ng buto. Isa pa ang dapat sisihin dyan ay yung dswd at local govt. This is their responsibility. They need to educate these useless bums from degrading our country. Nakaka init ng ulo.

WASHINGTON D.C. - The Philippines is putting its best foot forward at the month-long International Festival in Memphis, Tennessee. This is only the 2nd time the Philippines has been featured as a nation in a major American festival -- the last one happened in the 1980s.
The Philippine extravaganza actually kicked off today as Filipino architect Augusto Villalon addressed the Architects of the World series at the University Club in Memphis.
A distinguished architect and expert in heritage conservation, Villalon most recently served as the Philippine representative to the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in Paris, France among other distinguished posts.
Philippine Ambassador Jose Cuisia is also scheduled to address the International Business Council luncheon at the Hilton Hotel on May 5. His talk is part of a seminar on “Doing Business in the Philippines.”

MANILA, Philippines - Zest Air, Asia’s most refreshing airline, now flies direct from Manila to Quanzhou, Jinjiang, China.
“The fruits of our hard work to operate Zest Air’s first International flight direct out of Manila is now finally ready for the harvest,” said Zest Air president and CEO Ambassador Alfredo M. Yao.
Already operating five international flights since 2010 – Incheon and Pusan in Korea, Shanghai and Beijing in China, and Taipei, Taiwan out of Kalibo and Cebu International Airports – the Quanzhou, Jinjiang, China is Zest Air’s first International flight emanating direct out of Manila.
More international flights direct from Manila are scheduled this year -- Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Shanghai, China and Incheon Korea. Zest Air is as well looking at resuming its flight to Hong Kong and opening its Singapore routes.

De Ocampo says Clark should be main gateway to Manila
MANILA, Philippines - The "It's More Fun in the Philippines" campaign is catchy, but former Finance Secretary Roberto de Ocampo said the government needs to drop taxes on airlines and make Clark the main gateway for Manila for tourism to flourish.
De Ocampo said Congress needs to replace the common carriers tax as soon as possible in part for airlines to resume direct flights to Europe.
Earlier this year, KLM ended the last direct flight from Manila to Europe, blaming the imposition of the tax for its decision.
"There are no more direct flights to europe because of our common carrriers tax. We have to get rid of that as soon as we can," de Ocampo told ANC's Business Nightly.
The former Finance Secretary said the government should make Clark the main gateway to Manila to reduce congestion and delays in the air, runways and terminals of the capital's airport. The government is also urged to build an airport express to link Clark and Manila.
"We have to get cracking about moving the international airport perhaps to Clark and then infrastructure, infrastructure, infrastructure that has to be the point of concentration," de Ocampo said.
De Ocampo said he thinks the government has learned from last year when reviewing project proposals delayed spending and helped drag economic growth.
"Delays can happen because of corruption, but delays can also happen if there is well intentioned paralysis by analysis. It's the latter they should be watchful about and avoid... An imperfect decision is better than no decision at all," he said.

Ito talaga kailangan natin.
Bigyan ko na lang kayo ng example. Sa Laguna, the top tourist draw is of course the Pagsanjan Falls. Traffic in Calamba and Los Baños is really horrible, especially on weekends.
As we know, there is a PPP Project to construct a four-lane expressway that will end in the town of Bay, bypassing the two towns. Mas madami ng Koreans na makakapunta sa Pagsanjan hehehe. This should be built NOW.
Pero if our political leaders exercise some political will, they will see to it to revive the PNR and its abandoned lines. PNR parin naman meh ari nun.

It may take P17 billion worth of road and related projects to fully prop up the country’s tourism industry, according to a proposal from the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).
Public Works Secretary Rogelio L. Singson said in an interview that he and Tourism Secretary Mon Jimenez have talked about the road projects needed in key tourism areas all over the country.
“We are submitting P5 billion worth (of infrastructure projects) for 2012 and P12 billion for 2013 in support of the [tourism] master plan,” Singson said.
The economic development cluster of President Aquino’s Cabinet recently endorsed the tourism road map.
The Cabinet cluster is composed of the DPWH, National Economic and Development Authority, and the Departments of Tourism, Budget and Management, Science and Technology, Finance, Energy, Interior and Local Government, Agriculture, and Trade and Industry.
Singson identified some of the infrastructure projects included in the DPWH proposal.
“Road projects in Cebu and Bohol cost P1.2 billion. In Palawan, there are projects like the Coron-Busuanga and Taytay-El Nido roads which, together, cost P150 million,” he said. “Road projects in Puerto Princesa are estimated at P138 million. The roadwork in Sorsogon going to Donsol costs P150 million. There are also projects in Benguet province, Davao City, Cagayan de Oro City, Zamboanga and other areas.”
On his other role as “water czar,” Singson said he had submitted a proposal on the restructuring of functions and responsibilities of water-related agencies.
“It’s now being reviewed by the Office of the President,” he said.
Cebu, Tagbilaran and Puerto Princesa cities are among the tourism areas to be supported by infrastructure work under the government’s program alignment strategy, according to the DPWH website.
Socioeconomic Planning Secretary Cayetano W. Paderanga Jr. said that the alignment of infrastructure projects with key programs, such as the tourism road map, was meant to maximize the impact of every peso spent.
Paderanga has described tourism as a “low-hanging fruit” that can quickly generate jobs and spark business activity in the countryside.
Energy Secretary Rene D. Almendras also noted that roads, airports and other infrastructure must be prepared to ensure the comfort of tourists even before the Philippines goes all-out with its tourism promotions.
Otherwise, Almendras said, “it will not be fun in the Philippines for the tourists.”
The Philippine economy must expand, in terms of gross domestic product (GDP), by a yearly average of 7 to 8 percent from 2010 to 2016 in order to reduce poverty incidence.
The country’s GDP only grew 3.7 percent in 2011, but is expected to recover starting 2012 due to higher public spending and more business activities brought on by infrastructure and public-private partnership projects, among others

MANILA, Philippines - Tourism estate developer Travellers International Hotel Group expects to open its grand Resorts World Bayshore casino complex in state-run Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp.'s Entertainment City by 2016.
Tina Garcia, head of the company's Investor Relations, said the $1.1-billion project, which will be thrice the size of Resorts World Manila across NAIA Terminal 3, will be funded with internally generated cash.
"Site preparation" on the over 30-hectare property will start in the second half of 2012, Garcia noted.
"It will be at least 4 years before we can open," she said on the sidelines of the Asian Development Bank's annual meeting in Manila on Wednesday, May 2.
The potential 2016 opening means Travellers could be the last of the 4 currently approved operators to open a gaming and resort complex in Entertainment City on the Manila Bay reclamation area.
Razon-led Bloombery Resorts Corp. and Sy-controlled Belle Corp. both expect to open their hotel and casino projects in 2013, while Okada-led Universal Entertainment Corp. told Inquirer it was slated for completion by 2014.
More competition
Garcia is not worried about the entrance of new casino players.
"We welcome the competition," she said. "You cannot say that the Philippines is a gaming destination if there is only Resorts World Manila. There has to be a lot of operators."
Regional gaming expert Gabriel Chan, the director for non-Japan Asia gaming and lodging for Credit Suisse, agreed.
"In gaming, supply creates demand," he said.
Garcia also noted, "If you take the history of Macau, they were always thinking if one person was going to open, it would cannibalize the existing casinos… but Macau continued to grow."
Now Macau has overtaken Las Vegas in terms of gross gambling revenue.
Double-digit growth
Garcia pointed out that Travellers is still the only group in the country licensed to operate 2 casinos.
She said the company anticipates "meaningful double-digit growth" in 2012, adding that analysts estimate the local market will "grow to about $3.5 billion by 2015."
Travellers is the joint venture of tycoon Andrew Tan's investment holding firm, Alliance Global Group Inc., and Genting Hong Kong Ltd.
The company's Resorts World Bayshore is expected to house at least 3,500 hotel rooms, versus the 1,200 hotel rooms of Resorts World Manila. The Entertainment City project will also be triple the size of the latter, which spans 10 hectares. - Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines (AP) - Delegates attending an international conference in the Philippines capital may not see what they came to discuss: abject poverty.
A makeshift, temporary wall has been erected across a bridge on a road from the airport to downtown Manila that hides a sprawling slum along a garbage-strewn creek.
Presidential spokesman Ricky Carandang defended the wall's installation, saying Thursday "any country will do a little fixing up before a guest comes."
He expressed hope that this week's annual meeting of Asian Development Bank Board of Governors, which includes finance ministers and senior officials from 67 member states, will show the Philippines is open for business. The lending institition, which is headquartered in its own walled compound in Manila, aims to cut poverty in the Asia-Pacific region.
"We need to show our visitors that Metro Manila is orderly. We owe it to ourselves," said metropolital Manila chief Francis Tolentino.
"I see nothing wrong with beautifying our surroundings. We are not trying to keep the poor out of the picture," he said.
There was no immediate comment from ADB.
The Philippine Communist Party recalled that former first lady Imelda Marcos - notorious for ostentatious lifestyle - was ridiculed for trying to hide squatter colonies. She erected similar whitewashed walls along the route of foreign visitors to the Miss Universe pageant held in Manila in 1974, and other international events.

Nah seriously, mas realistik na lahat ng iskwater should be subjected to sterilization - free tubal ligations and vasectomies. So they f&ck all day and all night long (yun lang naman talaga gusto nila e) if they are too lazy for anything else (such as honest work) and maybe in a generation all will go to Masa extinction.
