Better to lose 90,000 tourist than our territorial integrity that has about billions of dollars of oil under :D

After all those 90,000 supposed Chinese tourist can be replaced from tourist from other countries...but we cannot do that with our territorial integrity :D

Exactly! :lol::lol:

People missed that point!

Yes. The North east Asians are obsessed about "public image". Far more than us.

From what I gather, there were Vietnamese who flew from Vietnam to join the Manila rally.

This got me thinking, rather than having different protests in different countries, I think we should encourage "protester tourists" esp from Vietnam to join our protests in Manila

Despite of news of some Vietnamese flying to Manila to protest, the protest held last Friday are mostly organized by the left.

Unless you'll be seeing an EDSA 1 or 2 type of protest infront of the Chinese consular office in Makati, then that would be another story.

The left could invite them, but then, I doubt it.

But who knows what might unfold

Let our government handle the situation. From how I see it, the best option is for the whole Spratleys to become a neutral zone or similar to that of a DMZ.

IF China will allow it. This could be achieved through multilateral talks. But you know who opposes multilateral talks...

There were those from different countries who flew to HK to protest against The WTO's policy and this happened during the organization's conference held in the S.A.R.

Some of those who flew in were militant groups from here. And this is the only time when HK's riot squad were put into action since the Cultural Revolution protests of the 1960s.

We lost the chinese market, one of the biggest in the world. we also lost the HK market. Would you have the same attitude if in the future we lost the korean market or the american market?

Our tourist numbers is soooo small compare to our neighbors. Every tourist we lost must be treated with regrets. Being arrogant by saying, the lost of chinese tourist is nothing will not help our situation at all.

That's funny, that while, according to you, we lost the tourist market in Hong Kong, Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific launched direct Kalibo- Hong Kong flights. OMG. Dalawang airlines.

And if you have travelled the route Manila-Hongkong-Manila route lately and read HK papers- Philippines is still being sold as a destination. And punuan ang mga airlines between Manila and Hong Kong ha. I don't think they scaled down the flights.

Also, name ACTUAL CANCELLATIONS re Chinese Markets. Do you have figures to back up your claim? Kung wala, please do not pass motherhood statements as facts.

^^ My guess is, he leaves it to the DFA. But it would bee really nice if he himself will criticize the absurdity of Chinese claims lies

That will be the day. But I think, Noynoy is playing it smartly.

There are different shades of left by the way. If I was in Manila, I would have joined regardless of my political leaning. I wonder how many of the SSC forumers here who are based in Manila joined?

Good point about the different shades of the left. Akbayan seems to be the only leftist organization that has "more balanced" view although I don't always agree with them. They criticize the West but they also have been the only real critic of Chinese incursions unlike the FAKE criticism of Bayan Muna and Joma Sison. If I remember right, Akbayan was the only left-leaning partylist that criticized the beheading of our soldiers by insurgents and rebels.

Pero ok na ren at quiet sya, coz pnoy has the tendency to talk too much. Too much that he makes a lot of mistakes and compromise our already precarious situation with china. This govt really has a lack of people that is good in international diplomacy, puro kasi mga arrogante.

But he did something right with our stand off with China this time. Beijing miscalculated thinking that it can bully Manila just like that. ;)

Of course, bracing for impact is expected for what they are capable of throwing at us but standing firm for what we believe is right is the only way to go.

Philippines gained respect and fans from the same countries who stood up against Beijing's aggression. ;)

^^ What is annoying is that they think they have the jurisdiction on the Philippines.

My gahd, they even criticized the Philippines for the protest which is less than 5,000 worldwide. We are a democracy, who the hell are they to get angry? The US Embassy was defaced by the leftist but the US still says "it's freedom of speech"

Matakot sila kung mala-EDSA 2 and 3  Baka maovershadow ang Syria

(If you also noticed, the way these mainland officials talk are so harsh compared to other Chinese speakers who speak A LOT softly  Ganyan ba talaga mainland accent, parang galit )

MANILA, Philippines – If Singapore has the Singapore Sling, Manila now has Manila Sunshine as its signature cocktail.

The drink was recently launched by the Department of Tourism (DOT) in cooperation with the Makati Shangri-La hotel as part of its efforts to attract more foreigners to the country.

Described as “distinctly Filipino,” Manila Sunshine has “lambanog,” or coconut wine, as its base.

It also has the flavors of local fruits mango and pineapple, with a tinge of triple sec and dark rum from Tanduay, an alcoholic beverage in the Philippines.

The cocktail is garnished with “tanglad” or lemongrass, and a sliced pineapple.

En serio, how do people from Small Earth (Muntinlupa) reach that place MOA??? Ako I took the Skyway one time from Filinvest and I was smiling all the way coz it was a breeze literally, akin ang kalye, mahangin sa taas, nice view of Muntinlupa, Paranaque, NAIA, Magallanes ... up to that nostalgic place with fond memories in Pasay, Victoria's Court/ the motel alley.

Ampucha, nung malapit na ko sa LRT I was trapped in a Constricting Gridlock at the corner of EDSA and Taft for a good 35-40 minutes. Sooo, kung anong natipid ko man waltzing through Skyway bawing bawi naman and dagdag pa diyan sa EDSA Taft na yan. Again, seriously how do people even reach Mall of Asia to begin with (sa mga Southerners, Las Pinas, Alabang, San Pedro??) Is it really worth goin there? Guys pls correct me or INFORM me if im wrong but do we have a strong promotional tourism campaign in INDIA, AUSTRALIA, RUSSIA and even in LATAM and MIDEAST??...I mean this stupid China ban will just be a minor scratch to our tourism business if we can tap these hug, HUGE markets...
India and Russia has a lot of middle class, millionaires and even billionaires too...LATAM countries is much more similar to us culturally and I think we are to closest in Asia so it wont BE DIFFICULT FOR THEM AND US to relate and communicate.
MIDEAST is also a big market where in MALAYSIA is aggressively tapping, If we have some MIDEAST clients here we can give jobs to our muslim brothers to cater and accommodate them....

we much veer away from China who is insulting, blackmailing and disrespecting us...they do not deserve out sincere hospitality and out-most respect!!

Only 38 USD for an Armani shirt? That is cheap. That almost sounds like shopping at H&M.

Some suppliers of Armani are in India. I went to one of their suppliers and they tried to sell me an Armani scarf for 50USD. I wasn't impressed. My Mongolian yak wool scarf was softer. And I got it in Mongolia.

^ The Armani Group has many labels that cater to different markets. Giorgio Armani is the house's high end level, Emporio Armani and Armani Exchange are the more accessible labels (price wise) and more street-atuned. The US$38 t-shirt was probably from the group's Armani Exchange label.

Bakit ka naman magugulat, ever since naman may mga brand names na assembled or made in the Philippines. Hindi usually dine distribute ito sa Philippine market at dinadala sa homebase sa Europe o US mostly since US brandnames karamihan. Tapos binebenta at ineexport ng US sa locals itself at ineexport ang iba sa ibat ibang bansa. Same goes to EU brandnames.

Xinhua Insight: Tourism hit as Huangyan dispute escalates
(Shanghai Daily/Xinhua, May 16)

http://www.shanghaidaily.com/article/article_xinhua.asp?id=71076

The irony is: In Vietnam, Chinese tourists are the no. 1 in 2011 statistics......They also have an issue over Paracel.

Chinese tourists who visited Vietnam in 2011, 1,416,804. This represents 24% of total tourists.

Source: http://www.vietnamtourism.gov.vn/english/index.php?cat=012040&itemid=5143

^^ If that's the case, it could be a media ploy by Chinese media.

xxxriainxxx

^^ Media ploy definitely.. And Vietnam does not rely on Chinese tourists alone. Here in the North, majority of the tourists are from Europe, North America and ASEAN. It's pretty difficult to find a Chinese restaurant here.

Meanwhile... I hope this wont happen to our tourist spots...

Sad news from Vietnam's most treasured and most beautiful spots... :ohno::ohno::ohno::ohno:

Halong Bay: When Tourism Goes Wrong
Posted on May 9, 2012 by ‹

In Northern Vietnam, thousands of grottos and limestone cliffs dot the emerald waters of Halong Bay. Junk boats ply its water, against the natural backdrop of dark green rock formations shrouded in mist. The limestone in this bay has gone through 500 million years of formation in different conditions and environments to evolve into the picturesque site it is today. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the attraction is easily the most famous site in the country and also the most visited – with nearly three million tourists cruising its waters every year.

Without proper regulations and safety standards in place, Halong Bay has unfortunately fallen victim to environmental issues and even fatal accidents. In 2011, a boat sank, killing 12 tourists in Halong Bay – shocking the world with the tragic news. According to several comments from travelers on Lonely Planet, this isn’t an isolated incident.

A Traveler’s Dilemma

Before arriving to Vietnam, we’d found ourselves in a dilemma – to visit Halong Bay and contribute to the existing environmental problems? Or skip it altogether but possibly miss one of the country’s most beautiful sites? Like many others, we’d heard many sing praises of Halong Bay and its dreamy setting; but we’d also heard plenty of travelers rant about the crowd, the pollution and the unethical behavior of local tour operators.

By the time we arrived in Hanoi, we were convinced we had to see it for ourselves. After all, this was our second time in Vietnam and we both love the country – both the good and the bad. We booked ourselves on a mid-range overnight boat trip (prices range from $30 to $200+, we paid $67 for ours) - with not much expectations and a glimmer of hope that it wouldn’t disappoint. But it did. And it opened my eyes to what tourism can do to a place. The beauty of the poetic landscapes is undeniable, but the sheer amount of environmental destruction is enough to put off any traveler with a conscience.

Even before boarding our boat, we’d found a thick layer of oil and bits of rubbish floating on the water surface just off the shore of Bai Chay town (an unattractive and artificial town built all the way into the bay). Our boat, Dugong Sail – a rickety white boat with a roaring engine – was obviously nothing like what the operator had promised. In all honesty, we didn’t do as much research as we should have. In a fragile environment like Halong Bay, it is important to travel with only ethical and responsible tour operators – and in this situation, we’d obviously made a mistake.

Environmental Destruction At Halong

Upon sailing into the open waters, it was clear we were not going to be the only boat around – around ten others were sailing in the same direction. Apparently every single boat followed the same itinerary. By the time we got to the cave, we were in the company of at least 20 other boats and hundreds of people climbing the stairways into the cave. As we docked, another boat was leaving and cruising too close to us for comfort. We watched, amused and slightly horrified, as it jarred right past us, missing us by just a few inches. Our boat followed suit, squeezing its way between two other double-decked junks – with the bow of the neighboring boat hitting one of our mates on the back (luckily it didn’t hurt him) – this time, nobody was laughing.

Back in the cave, we walked elbow to elbow with at least a hundred other tourists. The cave was rather impressive, with giant stalactites and stalagmites jutting from within and the ceiling reaching up to 8 or 10 meters in height. Unfortunately, the interior of the cave was lit up with kitsch rainbow colored lighting, and lined with signboards and steps – with coca cola cans and plastic bags strewn all over the place. From the top of the cave, we saw a massive construction project underway at its shore, turning the emerald water into a murky brown color – our guide told me they were building a port, to accommodate even more boats. I couldn’t help but cringe: was this not enough already?

http://photos.wildjunket.com/Asia/Vietnam/Halong-Bay/i-b8SCtp8/0/M/2012-03-30-at-09-34-57-M.jpg

We spent the evening cruising deeper into the Gulf of Tonkin, leaving behind the trail of junk boats and finding ourselves cruising silently into more pristine waters. The air was fresh, the sounds of eagles flying overhead echoed in the distance. We weaved past tiny uninhabited isles and only saw boats sailing in the far distance. At this point, I almost felt that the trip was worthwhile – and perhaps after all, Halong Bay wasn’t as destroyed as I’d imagined. But the next morning proved me wrong.

We awoke to the sound of boats setting sail all around us and our engine roaring even louder than before. Dropping anchor at a narrow bay, we hopped onto a floating village to get onto our kayaks for the morning paddle. Damp and dirty life-vests, rusty kayaks and broken paddles – nothing surprising. But as we paddled out into the sea, we saw our fellow traveling mates almost getting run down by a junk boat that refused to give way to them. Just last year, a pair of kayakers had actually been run down by a boat, but had fortunately survived the accident. I shuddered at the thought of it – safety apparently wasn’t a priority here at all. We paddled more across the channel – the smell of the contaminated water was unbearable by now and the pollution even more so - we were literally paddling amidst dead fish and clusters of rubbish.

A Tragic Case

By the end of the trip, we were more than ready to hop off the boat and leave the bay – a place so beautiful yet tragically destroyed by humans. It’s clearly one of the worst scenarios of how tourism can go wrong. Because of the influx of visitors coupled with the lack of safety rules, the market is saturated with irresponsible tour operators who are more concerned with gaining profits, than environmental and safety issues.

Fortunately, new regulations have been introduced to tighten the operation of tourist boats after the major accident in Halong Bay last year that killed 12. The Quang Ning People’s Committee has a new scheme on building tourist boats, including the termination of wooden boats. New requirements call for all staff on board to have high school diplomas, at least two are required to have first aid training and boats have to be equipped with standard fire suppression systems.

For now, I wouldn’t recommend anyone to visit Halong Bay – not until the bay is cleaned up and the situation controlled with new safety rules and measures. I can only wish that the situation will improve, but until then, we need to do our parts to educate the next generation and prevent another scenario like this in future.

Indeed, the "More Fun in the Philippines" slogan and the efforts of DOT is having good results. And one of the best result is it unites all the tourism players across the country.

Modesty aside, Cebu has been promoting itself successfully, using it's own slogan such as "Island in the Pacific". However, Cebu is now supporting the "Its More Fun" format. And I guess, others as well.

Thanks DOT, for a job well done!

Well yeah, had this output isn't favorable, I can guarantee you, the critic would definitely on the person. To think that the DOT secretary now is still the choice of the president.

There are other islands that could replicate the beach of Boracay or even better and some of which you have listed could be possible candidates. The Philippines is more than Boracay. ^^ To be frank, Condos in Boracay gave me the idea, WTF?

Seriously, they should stop doing it.

The idea of having condos built in Boracay are those who frequently visit the island and would like their own place to stay while there.

But again, if there is still land for such development.

And I do hope that these future developments won't resort to high-rise.

Gov't aims to promote Phl as ESL destination
By Grace Melanie I. Lacamiento (The Freeman) Updated May 18, 2012 12:00

CEBU, Philippines - Apart from promoting the country as a tourist destination, government officials eye Philippines, particularly Cebu, as an ideal learning hub for English as a Second Language.

During the inauguration of the brand new, expanded office of the Quick and Quality English Tutorial School in Skyrise 4 at Cebu IT Park, Department of Tourism Regional Director Rowena Montecillo revealed that Cebu City Vice Mayor Joy Augustus Young is working with her department on a partnership in selling Cebu as an ESL destination.

Acknowledging the fluency of Filipinos in speaking the English language, she admitted though that there are no accurate data or specific records as to how many ESL schools have already been established in the country.

She then added that DOT-7 is employing new marketing strategies in promoting more fun in the Philippines and more fun in Cebu.

“DOT will not just settle for Philippines as a place to see but a place to be. We have to sell Philippines as an ideal destination,” she stated.

With 12 million Overseas Filipino Workers, 27 million Facebook users and 10 million Filipinos who have Twitter accounts, she further encouraged Filipinos to persuade more people to visit the country since tourism is the country’s business of all people as it provides employment and other opportunities.

Meanwhile, Japanese Consul to CebuYoshiaki Hata said that ESL training helps promote culture exchange between Cebu and Japan, looking forward to a growing number of Japanese students to learn English in Cebu.(FREEMAN)

There are just so many other islands to develop. Commercial development should be spread out, moderated. Ang mangyayari nyan eh baka maging Metro Manila ng mga isla ang Boracay eh.

Why not improve our tourism logistics infrastructure so other islands could be easily reached as well. Kapag naging basura ang Boracay sa sobrang dami ng development, it's irreversible sayang naman.

Wow!!! That old photo of Boracay is just wow!

I think that it's probably much more accessible and convenient for tourists to go there these days, but no offense to those who want a developed island (I could see why some or most would like that), I just prefer the old, more pristine look of Boracay. But that's just probably the kind of tourist that I am. I love that sense of escape and the old Boracay had that in spades. I guess it was inevitable. Boracay is still breathtaking, but developed. I'm afraid Palawan will follow suit and that is just a pity.

From ruins and slums to one of the country’s top tourist drawer—this is the makeover the Intramuros Administration (IA) is aiming for.

At a recent press conference launching Intramuros Week, IA Administrator Jose Capistrano Jr. announced that the rehabilitation of the Ayuntamiento building, the original seat of the Legislative Assembly in 1907, has finally been completed.

The building, which now houses the Office of the National Treasury, has retained its famed marble halls, he said.

Another project in the works is the installation of closed-circuit television cameras around the 64-hectare walled district, expected to be completed by July.

By October, the IA hopes to finish the development of the Maestranza Park or the portion of the 4.5-km Intramuros wall beside Pasig River. Reconstruction of the Maestranza wall is ongoing with recesses being eyed for conversion into cafes, restaurants and souvenir shops.

Capistrano said they were also in talks with the Department of Public Works and Highways for the construction of bridge over Pasig River which would directly connect Intramuros to Binondo.

He added that there were plans to extend Fort Santiago’s operating hours well into the night for cultural shows at the Rajah Sulayman theater; the installation of more lampposts especially in the tourist hubs inside the walled district, and the closure of several streets to vehicles to give way to increased foot traffic.

The Intramuros master development plan for 2012, which has been submitted to IA’s mother agency, the Department of Tourism, also includes a P100-million reconstruction of the St. Ignatius Church ruins to hold the ecclesiastical collection of Intramuros; the conversion of the Ateneo Municipal de Manila ruins into a boutique hotel; the redevelopment of the American Barracks in Fort Santiago into fine-dining restaurants; and the building of offices for the national archive and a maritime museum.

The projects will be done through public-private partnerships, Capistrano said.

haayyy. ewan ko ba bakit may mga taong di makakaintindi....it was explained time and again that the reason for slowing down the infra spending was to review, revamp and hopefully clean up the whole system. we all are aware how corruption has been deeply rooted in govt infra projects. we just have to look around and we see the results of corruption in govt projects. the govt has to do things differently to give the message. if projects were continued as is, the crooks will just continue to do their crooked business. and what will we have? may infra ka nga, overprice naman at substandard...

haayyy. ewan ko ba bakit may mga taong di makakaintindi....it was explained time and again that the reason for slowing down the infra spending was to review, revamp and hopefully clean up the whole system. we all are aware how corruption has been deeply rooted in govt infra projects. we just have to look around and we see the results of corruption in govt projects. the govt has to do things differently to give the message. if projects were continued as is, the crooks will just continue to do their crooked business. and what will we have? may infra ka nga, overprice naman at substandard...

Actually, this was confirmed by ADB who is the partner of most of the government's PPPs. They were involved in the review process and had provided the government assistance on how best to review proposals and detect...well, crooks.

^^^^ The bone of contention there is when the boracay hotel owner Robert Tiu said we need "3" factors for good tourism...people, place, INFRASTRUCTURE....pnoy held back the those big infra projects and stop the spending is so now we are cramming to upgrade our infrastructure at a very short period of time...clearly when pnoy took the helm of presidency HE DIDNT HAVE ANY PLAN AT ALL how to proceed....first two years he choke the spending on infra now with the all out campaign on tourism, didnt he know ( or at least his well paid minions ) that in order to move tourist around "seamlessly" we need good infra which he stalled??...:ohno::ohno:

Seriously? Any new goverment who took over and inherited all kinds of mess when corruption speaks, it is bound to get scrutinized, things would be put into a halt. WHY IN THE WORLD ANY PRESIDENT ALLOVER THE WORLD WOULD CONTINUE PROJECTS THAT ARE DEEMED ANOMALIES EVEN BEFORE HE OR SHE SAT DOWN IN OFFICE? Use your critical thinking and careful analogy.

Look at projects that was not tainted with corruption and infested with all kind of anomalies. They were able to proceed, you guys even criticized Aquino of taking the credit but the truth of the matter is, he just have to be there to enaugurate because he is now the president even if the credit should be on Arroyo's government. You're counting the two years? Hello????? REmember Frapport/Piatco vs Phil Government issue? NAIA T3 was put on hold and sat there idled for a decade, it's just one good example if you care to use your comon sense. It's not enough to have just senses only...

I don't know how young you are but if you're a college student or someone much younger than KnightOfTheFlag, I'd be embarrassed if you use comon sense that him:lol::lol::lol:

I believe all these infrastructure projects is already underway, it maybe slow but its going to be there, it will pick up i am sure 2 years before Aquino relinquished his seat to a new president. We just have to cross our fingers because i believe in the phrase "slowly but surely" that seems to be more effective than anything rushed.

I agree. I have to give credit to PNoy for including tourism in his radar screen for the economic development of the PHL. Mon Jimenez is an outstanding choice to lead the DOT. The next step for the PNoy government is to make sure that the DOT, DOTC, and DLIG (read: PNP) are all in sync to the baton of the President.

Leeds winner Sofya Gulyak electrifies Manila anew
By: Antonio C. Hila
Philippine Daily Inquirer
1:58 am | Monday, May 21st, 2012

International pianist Sofya Gulyak recently electrified Manila audience anew in a solo recital at the CCP Little Theater. This was only weeks after her sterling collaboration as featured soloist of the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra in its final concert for the season.

In an impressive all-Russian program, Gulyak displayed her winning form as the first woman ever to garner the top prize in the Leeds Piano Competition in 2009.

The program was a showcase of intense virtuosity that summoned power and technical brilliance only a well-honed, steely pair of hands could execute.

US pianist Raffi Kasparian to perform in Laoag
By: Pablo A. Tariman
Philippine Daily Inquirer
1:56 am | Monday, May 21st, 2012

When American pianist Raffi Kasparian and his 13-year-old son, Roman, perform at the Northern Christian College Auditorium in Laoag City on July 14, it will bring back memories of a few concerts mounted in Ilocos Norte some years ago.

While the program has interesting pieces by Bach, Ravel and Rachmaninoff, among others, the father and son will connect with Filipino audiences by opening the concert with a piano arrangement of “Pamulinawen” and two rarely heard pieces by Francisco Buencamino.

To be sure, this is not the first invasion of classical music in the province.

Cecile Licad played an all-Chopin program at the Malacañang ti Amianan in 2001, and another all-Chopin recital in 2006 with tenor Lemuel de la Cruz and flutist Christopher Oracion opening the concert at the historic Paoay Church.

Licad played Mozart in Curimao in the resort of Dr. Joven Cuanang shortly after the Paoay concert. A Steinway grand piano had to travel 18 hours from Manila to Paoay and Currimao and back for the recital.

Island offers quiet getaway to tourists

Vinzons, south Luzon (Philippine Daily Inquirer/ANN) - In the flatland that lies parallel to the almost two-kilometer stretch of a privately owned white-sand beach called Halabang Baybay (Long Beach) in Barangay Mangcawayan on Calaguas, an island off the town of Vinzons in Camarines Norte, watermelons once thrived.

The trailer plants known for their thirst-quenching fruits had to give way to tourists since the field gained fame as a destination "comparable with Boracay" four years ago.

Mangcawayan, along with Banocboc and Pinagtigasan, is among the three poor villages in the Calaguas Group of Islands (or Calaguas as it is popularly known today) in the northernmost frontier of Bicol. It can be reached in two and a half hours by boat from the town centers of Vinzons or Paracale.

Tourists arriving in throngs had repeatedly trampled on the watermelon vines, so the peeved farmers have stopped planting. Others have taken advantage of the new-found attraction of the islands to sell refreshments to hungry swimmers.

In 1995, Supertyphoon "Rosing" (international code-name: Angela) almost obliterated Mangcawayan and the rest of the Calaguas with strong winds and sea surges, dooming the residents to a life of isolation.

Tourism campaign: Turning fun in PH into hard cash
By: Winston A. Marbella
Philippine Daily Inquirer
11:33 pm | Thursday, May 24th, 2012

http://business.inquirer.net/61357/tourism-campaign-turning-fun-in-ph-into-hard-cash

The Department of Tourism (DoT) has more than just hundreds of billions of pesos riding on its blockbuster campaign, “It’s more fun in the Philippines.”

They’ve got the government’s most visible and palpable showcase project riding on those six words and, ultimately, how the common people will rate the performance of the Aquino presidency.

No other government activity reaches the grassroots with more impact. The industry’s economic “ripple effects” directly provide employment to close to seven million tourism workers, almost a fifth of the workforce. And working for tourist dollars is actually a lot of fun.

“It’s more fun in the Philippines,” declared Finance Secretary Cesar Purisima, as the four-day 45th annual meeting of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) board of governors ended recently. “Manila 2012 has put the Philippines back on the radar screen of the international community.”

Tourism Secretary Ramon Jimenez Jr. unveiled the National Tourism Development Plan, a P266-billion blueprint aimed at increasing international tourist arrivals to 10 million, and domestic travelers to 35.5 million by 2016.

The Aquino administration is planning to spend some P74 billion beginning this year to reach those targeted arrivals. The funds will be poured into infrastructure, tourist-site improvements, and marketing support over a four-year period until 2016, Jimenez said.

Quick results

Jimenez said initial promotion efforts have started yielding results. In the first quarter of 2012, inbound tourism jumped by 16 percent to 1.15 million. This brings the agency closer to its 4.6 million arrivals targeted for the year.

The increase is the market’s “quick response to promotion initiatives,” he said. Arrivals from China grew by 77 percent, Korea 16 percent, Taiwan 37 percent, Australia 18 percent, the United Kingdom 21 percent and Germany 18 percent.

With close to 4 million tourist arrivals in 2011, the country still ranks way behind its neighbors—Malaysia (25 million), Thailand (19 million), Singapore (13.2 million), Indonesia (7.6 million) and Vietnam (6 million).
6.8 million jobs

The DoT hopes to raise the contribution of the tourism sector to 8.1 percent of the gross domestic product from the current 5 percent; and “directly employ 6.8 million that will account for 17 percent of total employment.” Most of these tourism workers will come from the poor sector, based on the cluster destination framework.

The planned investments versus the projected increase in tourist expenditures will result in an economic internal rate of return of 21.05 percent, and a net present value of P24.1 billion.

Around P50 billion will be spent by the government to build roads and bridges, says Rolando Canizal, director for the Office of Tourism Planning, Research and Information Management. This year, P3 billion has been allotted to construct roads and airports, and P17 billion in 2013.

The plan was presented at a parallel forum during the 45th Annual Meeting of the Board of Governors of the Asian Development Bank.

The government investment represents 29 percent of the P266-billion total investments needed by the tourism sector. Canizal said that most of the investments, or P191 billion, will come from the private sector.

Additional 50,867 hotel and resort units are being planned from 2012 to 2016.

Going competitive

Daniel Corpuz, Tourism undersecretary for planning and promotions, said that prior to the master plan, the goals of the tourism sector were hampered by “uncompetitive tourist destinations and products; limited flights and seat capacities, including the poor quality and limited capacity of international and domestic transportation and infrastructure destination, as well as other restrictions that have limited market access; and weak public-sector tourism governance and human-resources development policies and practices.”

To overcome these challenges, he said, the DoT will undertake strategic directions and programs—such as the development and marketing of competitive tourist products and destinations; improvement of market access, connectivity and destination infrastructure; and improvement of tourism institutional, governance and industry manpower capabilities.

Persuasive power

Jimenez defended the agency’s slogan—“It’s more fun in the Philippines”—from critics who said that the problems of the sector couldn’t be solved with just a tagline.

“Those who say that have limited knowledge of the persuasive power of words, of communication,” he said.

Jimenez said the slogan “makes a compelling argument for choosing the Philippines as one of the world’s top tourist destinations. It is rooted in our competitive advantage, a ‘deliverable,’ where Filipinos put genuine value in being able to participate to make their guests feel at home.”

It is second nature to Filipinos, he said, “to be hospitable and seize every opportunity to make guests’ every visit to his home successful.”

The slogan has “energized” the system and “contains one thing that works so well in an open competition … it is the truth. It is about Filipinos and their infectious love of things the world tends to forget: family, friends and communion with God and Nature,” he said.

The Aquino administration has just undertaken a P63-million advertising campaign over CNN. The DoT and the departments of Budget and Management, Finance, and Trade and Industry, and the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas will shoulder funding for the campaign.

The DoT said the 30-second spots on CNN cost about P19,000 each. The rollout of the ads was timed for the ADB meet and CNN’s special Eye on the Philippines programming.
It will run in key international markets until August.

(To be continued)

This will NOT materialize as long as the Philippine/Chinese dispute is at large and a military build up is a go. Philippine tourism definitely needs China as huge tourism market. Now that most charter flights and Chinese travel bureaus have cancelled due to a Chinese travel ban just as they were about to boom, I do not see any growth prediction to more than double to 10 million tourists within 5 years.

Besides, the negative effect of dispute and military build up between the two nations, it will keep others at close watch. The Philippines has no chance against the chinese military. It is simply stupid to send one of the only two larger naval vessels to the Spratley Islands, we have no chance of a victory here AT ALL ! Wake up Mr. President !

Seriously, the situation between The Philippines and China turning to a "hot war" is still slim.

And if this happens, I'm sure the world will side with us!

Even if there is shit happening in the shoals it is still generally peaceful in our mainlands.

As for tourists, yes there is potential for Chinese tourists but for now, we should stick on our top 3 which includes South Korean, The US and Japan. Plus promoting our country in Europe and Aus/NZ.

Military build-up is a NECESSITY. If we look at the current state of Philippine defense, we are basically the weakest country in the world.

The irony of things is that despite having a $380 billion economy we have a military comparable to those in Africa. Not even our peers in the middle-income class.

Military build up is necessary ? This may off topics, so I will make it short. What we need is money to educate and feed our people, not to kill them or others.

The Chinese are the future of this whole area, tourist wise we just lost a huge market (hopefully temporarily), the far most largest in the whole region. That was a significant part of the 10 million tourists plan.:ohno::ohno::ohno:

Modernizing the Military is a huge MUST considering the philippines uses WORLD WAR TWO era naval ships and an airforce full of air without force.....Look at singapore, for such a tiny country, it has one of the world's very damn modern army.

Un-corrupt allocation of funds can fund both military, education and other services equally.

Yes, but we don't want the philippines to be a future chinese state. So, military build up is a must because of recent chinese hostilities near our shores. But you know, if you dont want us to do a military build up, can you please move to china? We don't need another traitor in this country.
