View Full Version : DONETSK - Donbass Arena (52,518) - EURO 2012
PaulFCB March 2nd, 2009, 06:19 PM Maybe they want to be more Western European Friendly since the club is clearly a nice contender for the UEFA Cup almost each spring :).
After all during European games they are supposed to write the names of the players in the Latin alphabet while they can only use the Cyrillic in they're domestic league/cup/league cup.
Clansmanowicz March 3rd, 2009, 07:33 PM Just amazing. I think it'll be one of the best stadiums in Europe.
And really, this stadium looks bigger than 50k ;)
Ranma Saotome March 4th, 2009, 01:43 AM Awesome stadium. This design is perfect, very very daring.
I think interesting the difference between the tribunes behind the goals and the orange and black seats give to the interior a cool visual effect.
Donbass Arena is one of the my favorites stadiums around the world.
Congratulations, Shakhtar fans!
Big Robje March 4th, 2009, 11:43 AM Congratulations to Ukraine and Donetsk for this magnificent stadium. However, I do worry about the roof. You can see in the pictures that its too dark inside the stadium. This could influence the condition of pitch... negatively I'm afraid. Just like in the Amsterdam ArenA. Roofs should be transparent so more natural light reaches the pitch. Or is there a plan to work with the lights system, like at the Emirates Stadium in London?
ewild March 4th, 2009, 12:28 PM Big Robje: yes, there is.
Ten Reasons To Love Donbass Arena: (http://donbass-arena.com/en/news/?id=8584)
5. The football pitch will be natural. It will require as much as 8,000 square metres of grass. The field will be fit with sensors. Drainage, irrigation and heating lines will run under the lawn. Thirty-eight kilometres of close-cycle underground communications will ensure constant temperature for the grass roots in winter. Special biolamps imitating sunlight will be placed about the pitch in winter to ensure enough light for the grass and photosynthesis. Besides, an airing system is designed under the field to supply air to the grass roots. In total, the pitch "sandwich" of underground facilities will come up to 1 metre in depth.
NMAISTER007 March 12th, 2009, 06:09 PM The U.S. Ambassador: Donbass Arena is one of the best in the world
It took the U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine William Taylor just fifteen minutes to say: Donbass Arena is not simply a miraculous football structure in Europe. “It will be one of the best stadiums all over the world!”, the international guest kept repeating looking at the Donetsk architectural masterpiece from inside and outside.
The trip of the U.S. Ambassador to the stadium under construction is a part of the itinerary for his personal visit to Donetsk oblast. Though, Mr Taylor has been dreaming of visiting the arena for long. So, having come to Donetsk, he certainly took advantage of the chance. Moreover, Rinat Akhmetov personally gave the important visitor a tour around the stadium.
The President of FC Shakhtar arrived at Donbass Arena some time before the appointment as is his wont. The Ambassador joined him in a couple of minutes. The guest was warmly welcomed.
-And now I welcome You to Donbass Arena, - invited Rinat Akhmetov.
The tour started… At first – short presentation of the Donetsk stadium by Oleksandr Atamanenko, then entering the bowl, and, finally, visiting the future box of the of FC Shakhtar’s President. This was actually a historical moment: the Presidental box was visited for the first time not only by the U.S. Ambassador, but also Rinat Akhmetov himself.
Mr. Akhmetov suggested Mr Taylor try the spectators' seats – the guests occupied the places on the stand for a minute and an amazing view over the field unfolded before them. The President of the club was offered to choose the seat he liked most and assign it to him permanently by marking it with Donbass Arena logo. But Mr. Akhmetov refused.
“No, no, it is not worth the trouble. No logos are needed: the simpler, the better”, said the President and immediately began talking about the supporters. He hopes very much that 35,000 seats will be occupied at the stadium for regular matches and all 50,000 for the Champions League. Shakhtar will be playing here, after all!
William Taylor agreed. Moreover, the Ambassador turned out to have visited the games of Shakhtar before and even supported them, which is very pleasant! Leaving Donbass Arena, William Taylor could not help turning and looking at the arena again.
“I have never seen such a beautiful stadium before”, he summed up and promised to visit the first match of FC Shakhtar on the official opening day of the stadium.

I confirm
Mr.Greenfield March 15th, 2009, 02:32 PM ...especially in the winter.
Carrerra March 15th, 2009, 05:51 PM Agreed. It looks best in winter. It should be called winter stadium.
ewild March 15th, 2009, 07:20 PM Let us wait the summer, and park finishing, and stadium itself. Will see.

PaulFCB March 16th, 2009, 08:06 PM Looking at it I think its inevitable.
Samacado March 16th, 2009, 11:29 PM I can`t help, but i don`t like it at all. it looks so cold and dark inside. The roof is too large and they will get problems with the pitch for sure as the pitch is even harmed by the cold long winters there.
They should have done a retractable roof. But the way they have chosen, it is neither nothing.

It's nice but not practical. That huge roof doesn't event cover the stands properly.Huge parts of the stadium will be under precipitation.
And another thing, you can not play during day time because not enough light gets inside the stadium IMO.
It really is special but has a lot of flaws.

Cold long winters are you serious? Were do you think Donetsk is located in Syberia. It has same winter as the rest of Europe.
mihai_alex March 17th, 2009, 03:41 PM That's not really true Bandera, there is a lor of climate influence coming from the east and north, determing a temparate continental climate, meaning very cold winters and hot dry summers, but that's true for the largest part of the country,I don't know for Donetsk.

Nobody said it's subarctic Siberia but it's still a continental moderate with pretty cold winters. The summers are dry but I doubt they reach high temperatures while in the early springs or late falls they are quite low at the hours the games are played.

 Oh, where you have seen a very cold winters in Ukraine? In Donetsk we have a dirty rainy winter with a 2-3 weeks of frost and snow, month of rains in June, hot July and August and unpredictable weather in spring and autumn :)
mihai_alex March 21st, 2009, 03:04 AM Oh, where you have seen a very cold winters in Ukraine?
Come on,Ukraine is colder than the largest part of Europe,Donetsk is warmer because it's close to the sea.
In Romania for example we don't even have snow anymore, just rain, except for the mountains.

Wow youre funny. So Kyiv is colder then Bucharest
mihai_alex March 23rd, 2009, 11:25 AM How many snowy days in an year are there in Kiev?In Bucharest 3 max,and that for 5 cm.
And why do you laugh?isn't Kiev higher in latitude?
PaulFCB March 24th, 2009, 11:19 PM Kiev is cooler then Bucharest. The sensation of cold in the winter comes a lot from the so called "Crivat" ( The Blizzard ) a cold north-eastern originating wind that blows in the winter in the Baragan Plain at high speed ( over 100 km/h up to 130 ) but the urbanization in Bucharest makes it less powerful in the city. The winter can usually mean a single stronger snow like in January 2008, the reason that the snow was such a big problem is because of the slow moving authorities. It depends from year to year, in late Dec. 2000 I was going out in the mid-day in my t-shirt because the temp. was well over 20 C.
During the summer and probably starting from mid-spring Bucharest is much warmer then Kiev, the Baragan Plain is one of the most hottest places in Europe during the summer and are constantly over 35 C. In 2000 and/or 2001 here and in the Banat Plain the temperatures were constantly the biggest on the European Territory. But of course, I don't know when you're championship starts in the summer, for example here they were killing the players by starting very early in August and now even in July when, if the stadium doesn't have floodlights the players have to make the effort of playing at over 35. In a Gloria Bistrita 2-1 Atletico Madrid game in the last round of Intertoto the Atletico players were pretty much demolished by the temperature. Instead, the stupid television that has the rights insist some games are played at 21:00 in December.
Probably in Kiev/Donetsk springs start warming up much later then here even though sometimes like in 1996 or 1997 and even this year March is extremely cold, I remember in 1996/1997 it snowed during the Orthodox Easter but those are exceptions. While Fall as much as I can see Kiev statistics is much colder then Bucharest, but of course those statistics seem to lie enough as the present may well differ from the past.

4 degrees in winter makes a lot of difference, and you have more snowy days, and the snow lasts longer.

JimB March 28th, 2009, 01:48 PM Really nice stadium.
Only criticism I have is that the interior seems a bit dark, even on a sunny day. It would have been better if they had used more glass on the roof.
berkshire royal March 28th, 2009, 04:17 PM I do like this stadium but there are a few things that could have been done better. Like Jim said it seems a bit dark I'm sure that will improve when they put on the lightinh system but I would have put more glass on the roof. To be honest I find the interior a bit dull. I think it looks an awful lot like the Allianz.
I would have made the suites at the back of most of the second tier wrap around the whole thing rather then in small segments it looks. I would also make the second tier smaller and have the first being larger. I would have made the third tier slant even more so that it is a really clear feature. And I would have the second and third overhang their tiers more, a bit like at the Millenium Stadium.
VelesHomais March 28th, 2009, 04:20 PM Such a beauty
http://shakhtar.com/data/img/stadium/str/0309/27.jpg
I don't get the darkness complaints, this isn't an ancient Greek amphitheater, natural sunlight is not the primary source of light.
mihai_alex March 28th, 2009, 04:37 PM It would be hard to play during daytime without turning on the lights..
VelesHomais March 28th, 2009, 05:21 PM Naturally lights will be turned on.
PaulFCB March 28th, 2009, 05:27 PM I think it would have looked better if the seats were all Orange and Sakhtar Donetsk written in White or Black if really necessary. ( definitely not that grayish ).
Anyway, this stadium will be the best in Ukraine, even though the Olympic in Kiev is almost rebuilt from 0, this one offers a very good view.

The first is the pearl of European stadiums, and any way the second will be obviously better than previous openair version =)

lukaszek89 April 3rd, 2009, 04:09 PM great stadium
fgdf April 3rd, 2009, 09:11 PM Great. Looks much bigger than it is when it comes to capacity.
NMAISTER007 April 13th, 2009, 05:52 PM Lamp posts are being installed at Donbass Arena. The works are at full swing both in the bowl and in the park. According to the project, the stadium will have 242 torches of different height, configuration and design, with most of them (145) to be located in the park. Once all the posts are installed - this will happen in a couple of days - the mounters will start decorating the torches with lamps.
The project developed by Fagus Company (Germany) provides for the torches to be located along the sidewalks, alleys and roads in the park, as well as at the parking lots, along the fences and approach steps to the stadium. External lighting is supposed to operate at full capacity until 22:00. It will be halved from 22:00 till 24:00, while deep into the night – 24:00 till 5:00 - the capacity will be 30%.
Apart from regular, holiday, night and emergency lighting modes, Donbass Arena will also have a decorative backlighting of over 300 lamps. The central alley of fountains will shine in multi-colour abundance, as it will be illuminated by powerful projectors directed from different angles. The fountain with a spinning granite ball will be illuminated by lamps installed at the bottom of the construction. Besides, bottom illumination will be provided not only for all sidewalks in the park, but also for absolutely every tree (!). The general colour tone is cold white. The building of Donbass Arena will feature the same colour, which will also be replenished with bottom blue lighting.
Totally, 12 km of cables running under the stadium will provide for the multi-colour illumination of Donbass Arena. Though, it's not much especially compared to
27 km of video cables and the 300-km-long IT web.

VelesHomais April 14th, 2009, 03:28 PM I think so too. But Neznajka is a Russian who is jealous, that's all :)
SpicyMcHaggis April 14th, 2009, 04:23 PM Stadium is easily among the best in Europe (or world for that matter). Top5 without problems. Considering that its new (and expensive) it will probably be the best in some terms.
TigroZavr April 15th, 2009, 09:54 AM Also believe that the stadium could-be enter in the 5 best stadiums in Europe, but obviously not the best in the world. On the roof: I'm also not very happy, it seems too large and not modern.
Axelferis April 15th, 2009, 08:27 PM a beautiful stadium and not all the best!!!! Please have humilty!
South african stadiums are better, Lille, Lyon,Allianz , Wembley stadium are better...Japanese stadiums (saitama,yokohama..)
Donbass is cool but from far not the best!!!
Nneznajka April 16th, 2009, 03:48 PM Im Not jealous :weird: It is good stadium ! I personally like very much inside of the stadium ! And how the seets are located ! It will be great view
on the football field from all the sides  But cladding from outside and the Roof could be better ImHO ! Donbass is the Best stadium in the post Soviet states for sure ! But not in the Europe and Definetly not in the world
VelesHomais April 16th, 2009, 04:33 PM Exterior and roof are the best features of this stadium  exterior is just extraordinary while roof is highly original and an engineering marvel
Axelferis April 16th, 2009, 06:50 PM the roof from my view is just a new version of all those sad east republican stadiums.
They could have done better but the stadium design in general is good!
But it's not the best for sure!
haggiesm April 17th, 2009, 09:54 AM just to clarify, are they going to install some sort of covering on the inside of the roof? it is an engineering marvel, yes, but it looks cluttered to me.

IMO its hard to say "best"

Dnipro7 April 25th, 2009, 09:35 PM The luxury in and around this stadium is what makes it one of the best of the world. The look is very nice too, that's what lets it fit in that class in the first place, but its all the little things that make this arena so impressive. Everything about it says luxury.

How many tickets and suites have they sold for next season? I can't see them filling 50,000 on a regular basis.

Perhaps in England, because your non top4 clubs are not competative in Euro competitions. In rest of the Europe tournament is still big enough. Its not CL but its still big. Congrats to Shakhtar on title.
berkshire royal May 21st, 2009, 03:02 PM ^^
I don't mean that disrespecfully. But the fact is that the big clubs have done their best to devalue this competition and in some way they have succeded, teams like AC Milan, Valencia, AS Roma the so called big clubs and CL regulards have shown over recent years that they do not care about this comp any more and although it is a still a tough competition to win when you have teams sending out their second team when they can still win it you know a competition is no longer top class. They need to bring in the third place teams from England, Spain, Italy and possibly third place teams from Russia, Germany and France to make it more competitive and important to the big teams.

But the fact is that the big clubs have done their best to devalue this competition and in some way they have succeded, teams like AC Milan, Valencia, AS Roma Well, usually when club like that ends in UEFA Cup that means that they are struggling in their domestic league and its normal that they prioritize their domestic competition at that point.
Livno80101 May 21st, 2009, 03:35 PM after yesterday's historical success for Ukrainian football, shakhtar's stadium should be named ''Istanbul, 20.V.2009. ARENA''
congrats on UEFA Cup winning, and especially congratulations to Darijo Srna, Croatian and Shakhtar HERO. Darijo, legenda si!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
JimB May 21st, 2009, 04:05 PM Perhaps in England, because your non top4 clubs are not competative in Euro competitions. In rest of the Europe tournament is still big enough. Its not CL but its still big. Congrats to Shakhtar on title.
I wouldn't say that non top 4 teams in England are not competitive. It's just that non top 4 teams prioritise other competitions.
For instance, Spurs played Shakhtar in the round of 32 but, because Spurs were in danger of relegation from the Premiership at that time and because they had to play Manchester United in the Carling Cup final only three days later, they fielded a mixture of reserves and youth team players against Shakhtar both home and away. In fact, Spurs' makeshift team outplayed Shakhtar in the second leg and, with the chances they created, really should have taken the match to extra time, at least. Shakhtar's Romanian coach admitted as much after the game.
But congratulations to Shakhtar for winning the UEFA Cup last night. A great achievement for them and their country.

Three Months To Opening
Three months are left before the opening of Donbass Arena. Here are several site "sketches" to show preparations for the Grand Opening.
Outside
The fence enclosing the site gradually "disappears". It is being dismantled both from ulitsa Chelyuskintsev and prospekt Mira, which now give a perfect view of the arena and the outlines of the on-coming European park taking a clear shape. The fence is also being removed from around the widened and treated lake, which opens up with a cascade of smaller water pools. Also, you can see a bustling movement on the surface of the lower and the largest lake - a family of ducks is settling in here! It consists of two adults and a brood of ducklings. Their appearance is a symbolic event and quite a curious sight... especially on the background of works, which are at full swing around the lake and on the area near the stadium. However, it's also very "hot" inside.
Inside
A usual fuss of a hard working day hangs inside. In some areas finishing works still continue, in some - they are being or even been completed. More and more places inside the stadium look almost just like you will see them in three months at the opening of Donbass Arena. Though, there is still much to be done, mostly just polishing and mounting. Installation of commentator booths is almost over. They will lie on top of the press sectors (in the centre of the West Stand, on Tier 1). In total, the stadium provides 28 individual commentator "studios". Each of them will be fully isolated (only the view over the pitch is open) and fully equipped. Very soon, this "mini-front" will be completed.
P.S.
As we are leaving the stadium, another working procedure comes in view- acceptance of the newly-arrived special car to look after the pitch. Soon, we will be happy to see the pitch and the whole Donbass Arena.

I assume these are press boxes?
vanbasten May 31st, 2009, 02:18 PM I assume these are press boxes?
It's commentator seats.
vanbasten May 31st, 2009, 02:23 PM Media Are Welcome
Football is another name for work – this is a common phrase for journalists. But a meeting with Donbass Arena should develop the opposite stereotype - work is another name for joy. Elite-class stadium has top-of-the-line conditions, including facilities for media. So, let's have a look at the brief "media plan" at Donbass Arena.
Arrival
Two parking lots are designed for journalists just next to the stadium. This is an underground lot for 30 cars and a large zone for 158 cars in the south side (area - 8,600 sq m) intended for mobile TV studios (OBvan area) and other special-purpose vehicles. Access to the stadium Journalists will have an individual entrance to a special area on Level 2, meant only for them, where spectators are not allowed.
At stands
Press seats are in the centre of the West Stand on Tier 1, one sector above the benches of team managers. The total (maximum) number of seats is 1,158. These include 432 tip-up seats for writing media, 135 commentator seats and 591 seats for other media including several seats for wheelchair journalists.
The number of seats in the press box will depend on the level and round of competitions (Ukrainian Championship, the Champions League etc.)
Of course, Donbass Arena offers high-speed Internet access, high-quality telephone lines, as well as all necessary facilities for TV and photo reporters. Press Box will be accessible through three special tunnels. They lead to the under-the-stand “labyrinths”, where the most interesting after-match events unfold.
Under the stand
The total area of under-the-stand premises for media is around 1,000 sq m excluding special rooms for cameramen and photo reporters, storage rooms, interpreters’ booths, cafes, WCs, a first aid room, as well as a media corridor complex. Let's dwell on key points.
Press-centre
Its area makes up to 285.2 sq m, which is just a little more than a penalty box of a regular football pitch. Press conference room resembles a middle-sized cinema hall. A steep slope of the audience room adds to this image. The steps lead to the stage, where main actors - managers and players - seat. Of course, there will be a special place for TV cameras. Interpreters for online work will seat in special booths in the upper tier. The press-centre is equipped, certainly, with the most advanced facilities.
Interview
Donbass Arena has two areas for hot- or flash interviews during halftimes or after the final whistle. These areas are located on both sides of the pitch access tunnel - just several metres from the threshold of the tunnel leading to the changing booths. The stadium also offers four individual studios for TV and radio interviews with the total area of around 100 sq m. They border on the spacious mixed zone of 200 sq m, through which the players will get to the exit and the underground parking.
Work and relax
The largest part of the "media territory" is intended for journalists to work and rest. Its area makes 352.8 sq m, which is even larger than the press centre because you can not only work here, but also relax. The journalists are welcome to a cafe and a bar, where they can chat with their colleagues and then get back to work. According to a renowned contemporary, journalism is something, which is more interesting today, than tomorrow. Donbass Arena is interesting already today and will be by far more interesting tomorrow.

Carrerra June 4th, 2009, 11:08 AM Artificial pitch?
vanbasten June 4th, 2009, 11:18 AM Artificial pitch?
No...
Synthetic lawn has almost been laid at Donbass Arena. It will frame the oncoming natural football pitch. This is a so-called technical area, where grass maintenance facilities will move. When the pitch is covered with natural grass, it will look very similar to the synthetic fringe!
Synthetic coating looks like fleece attached to the underlying material. First, a special machine will stuff this fleecy surface with fine dry sand and then fill it with a layer of rubber crumb. This will deliver a fantastic effect: the surface of the "pie" will be covered with fleeces of synthetic grass 15-20 cm high, which will look like natural ones. But, such coating will require certain care and maintenance, sometimes even more thorough compared to basic natural lawn.

vanbasten June 9th, 2009, 08:29 PM Six Cascades of Beauty
By July, the west entrance of Donbass Arena will look like a fairytale - a cascade of illuminated dynamic fountains will emerge here. Today the facility is being completed.
The fountain comprises six levels. The upper and the lower basins are similar in size: the water here will rise 60 cm from the bottom. Other basins are not that deep - 35 cm on average. In total, 228 cubes of water will run inside the cascade. Also, the construction will take quite a large area: 10.6 metres wide, 57 metres long and 1.2 metres high.
The upper basin of the fountain is decorated with huge balls gracefully pouring out streams of water. Sprayers and geysers along the axis will add to the impressive water pattern. Every evening the water surface will sparkle, glitter and play in the rays of the setting sun.

berkshire royal June 10th, 2009, 03:51 PM It's a nice stadium and credit has to be given that the designers and the owners at the club haven't cut corners and really have made sure that all the facilities are the best they possibly can be. However the design is hardly groundbreaking take away the third tier and what you have is an interior that looks exactly the same as about 25 other stadiums in Europe.

vanbasten June 23rd, 2009, 12:23 PM A Guiness Worth Record
By Yevgeniy Kolesnichenko
The biggest spinning ball installed before the stadium
The works around the on-coming stadium run without halt. You can already see the outlines of the future 5-star park, which is being gradually decorated with architectural elements. Thus, a huge granite foot ball has emerged by the south approach road to the stadium. The ball will also serve as a fountain. Many knew about this, but in real life the construction has turned to be even more beautiful and impressive, than one could imagine.
"It is the biggest spinning ball on the globe", explained Vadim Gunko, Technical Director of Donbass Arena. "I believe we can register this record and easily claim for the Guiness Book."
A thirty-ton giant was made by German masters of special granite - Tittlinger. The ball is over 2.7 metres in diameter. Though, extremely big, the construction really looks like a foot ball. Grey elements on the surface are of polished granite, while black ones have a sandblast finish and are covered with acrylic. The ball stand is also quite impressive: it's 360 cm in diameter and weighs 12.5 tons.
ENKA specialists mounted the giant ball during two days being supervised by German experts. Last Saturday, technical staff had a briefing on operational characteristics of the construction installed.
But the main wonder is that, the huge ball will spin under the pressure of two water streams. Water pressure and perfectly round shape of the ball ensure the spinning. Deflection between the ball and a sphere is less than 0.1mm.
The ball is controlled by an automated programmer and has several modes of spinning and the system has already been tested. The ball is not spinning so far, however, it will be launched once all the "dusty" works in the south part of the stadium are over.

berkshire royal June 24th, 2009, 10:57 PM The exterior, roof and general finishing touches in this stadium are top class but the interior is saved by the slightly different third tier because without it the stands would look extremely ordinary. Not sure, in fact :
Last month:
Doubts still persist over Poland and Ukraine Euro 2012
Uefa has chosen four Polish cities and Ukraine's capital Kyiv to host Euro 2012 games but has postponed a final decision on other Ukrainian venues, the organisation's president, Michel Platini, said.
"There are still many problems to be resolved in Ukraine," he admitted. "There are huge infrastructure problems."
The four Polish cities are Warsaw, Poznan, Wroclaw and Gdansk, and Platini named Lviv, Donetsk and Kharkiv as the Ukrainian candidates awaiting confirmation with a final decision to be made 30 November, reports The Guardian.
The former French international said Kyiv was the only Ukraine city on the list, but would not definitely host the final as had been planned. "The final match will be held in Kyiv only if specific conditions with regard to the stadium, airport infrastructure, regional transport and accommodation are met by 30 November," Platini said.
"Kyiv is OK according to Uefa's criteria for all matches leading up to the semi-final. If it's not Kyiv it could be Warsaw."
Wezza June 26th, 2009, 07:47 AM Really, you think so? I have to disagree, the exterior looks nothing 'soviet'.
Exterior doesn't really look Soviet to me, but i have to say the roof makes me think Soviet, only because of it reminds me of Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow for some reason....

vanbasten July 9th, 2009, 06:26 PM Green Area Almost Ready
Along with the stadium the parking area at Donbass Arena is getting ready to opening. Although preparations are in progress, the five-star park impresses with the variety of trees, bushes and grass already today.
“Chestnuts, willow, blackthorn, lilac, honeysuckle, barberry, roses, Echinacea and Hemerocallis are just a few plants bedded out in the park”, says Maksim Radomskiy, agronomist of the parking area at Donbass Arena. “They were planted with a ball of earth as in a pot to improve survival ability and acclimatization. Everything has taken root and is growing gradually despite the hot weather.
All the expected trees, bushes and grass for the lawn have been planted on the main parking section. The irrigation system has been launched too. We are looking after the plants now: weeding, watering and shaping them”.
“We’ve completed bedding out perennial plants. Earthworks are at full swing in the southern part of the park with irrigation system being installed. This sector will be commissioned at the latest term because of its complexity”, says the agronomist. It will be the main recreation area with an extensive network of paths, slopes, a rock garden, a pond and a waterfall cascade.
Everything will be top class in the five-star park. An automated watering system should be mentioned in this respect. It is made of underground tubes of different diameter for drip and sprinkler irrigation. The first system allows slow soaking of water into soil through thin tubes with holes to ensure regular moistening. Sprinklers will water the plants from above, like a sort of “water umbrellas”. In addition, trees will have a root irrigation system.
Specialists say the irrigation system is going through the final check-up and the park will see its first visitors soon.

vanbasten July 13th, 2009, 09:32 AM The Stadium Lights Up
For several days Donetsk locals have been enjoying an unmatched phenomenon: Donbass Arena is shining like an actual flying saucer. The explanation is simple – the stadium has started mounting LEDs to backlight the glass facade.
When assembled, the main facade section will feature blue backlight, while the perimeter of the upper roof edge will be lined with white light to produce the effect of a soaring roof. Thousands of LEDs are being installed from the inside of the facade.
The chief distinction of the facade spot backlighting is its energy efficiency. It will consume just 50-60 kW/h, which is very little, experts say. Regular luminescent or steel-halogen lamps would consume hundreds of kilowatts per hour.

http://shakhtar.com/data/imgdata/foto/news/21847__max_news.jpg
Donbass Arena has started installing e-turnstiles today. The first facility was mounted in the south of the stadium.
Vsevolod Prokopenko, DISS engineer in radio frequency identification, explains that a football fan will insert a ticket or a season ticket into a reading device. The data will get to the general database to be processed. If everything is right, handles of the turnstile turn forward and let you in.
According to experts, a turnstile is a kind of a mini-computer linked to the common network of the stadium.
Once the entrances are fit with such facilities, special software will be installed on each turnstile to be linked to Donbass Arena database.
In total, the stadium will be equipped with 89 regular turnstiles, 18 - for wheelchair users and 8 – for VIPs.

vanbasten July 14th, 2009, 12:10 PM A Step With Allowance for the Future
http://shakhtar.com/data/imgdata/foto/news/22141__max_news.jpg
Donbass Arena is getting ready for the oncoming opening and has started setting up illumination facilities. They are designed and assembled to ensure compliance of the best European stadium with the high UEFA standards.
The equipment installed at Donbass arena is supplied by Philips – the company number one in sport illumination. Philips supplied facilities for all football events held over the past 20 years by FIFA and UEFA (Football World Cup in Germany, Korea etc.). Besides, many huge global sport complexes operate illumination systems by Philips too. Benefits of this equipment include first-class quality, highly accurate projection and selection of optical elements and direction of illumination, etc.
All pieces of the illumination equipment have been installed so far with 272 spot projectors being aligned. The pitch wears temporary marking. It features 150 points, where a certain projector should aim. A worker up under the stadium's roof seeks a point on the pitch with a special laser sight and fixes a projector in a required position.
Adjusting the equipment is a very complex process, experts say. Broadcasting a match is impossible without proper illumination. UEFA sets strict requirements to lighting at stadiums. The standards are regularly updated depending on the forthcoming event. Meeting these criteria is paramount not for the spectators at Donbass Arena (a human eye can see the unfolding events even with poor illumination), but for TV broadcasting. Specific nature of TV equipment (optical elements and matrix, which collects and transmits information) is to ensure the same picture both for supporters at the stadium and TV viewers. This firstly depends on illumination.
Illumination at the stadium is tailored to a TV camera. Donbass Arena has eight main dedicated cameras located across the stadium in line with UEFA, which require special illumination. Today, UEFA illumination standard for international matches and the Champion's League battles is 1,600 lux. Donbass Arena can boast of facilities providing 2,000 lux. This level is a condition for broadcasting matches with high resolution TV technologies. Illumination at Donbass Arena is a step with allowance for the future. Besides, 2,000 lux is a UEFA requirement to EURO 2012 games.
By the way, tight standards are set not only to the level of illumination, but also to the quality of light. This means that the grass on the pitch must be green on screen, and the players' faces must look natural. Therefore, Philips has developed special sources of light with increased colour reproduction.
There are also special requirements to blinding. Donbass Arena equipment matches them all.
Interestingly, the light can pollute environment. In other words, at night, a projector with poor optical elements will illuminate not only the object itself, but also the sky and adjacent objects. Illumination norms insist that a light flow should be directed onto a particular point to avoid dispersion and light column, so that a person on the way to the stadium could see a starry sky above. Many high-rank stadiums fail to meet these requirements. Donbass Arena leadership, certainly, cares for to the city environment and claims by right that Donetsk will not suffer from "light pollution" thanks to illumination by Philips.

http://shakhtar.com/data/imgdata/foto/news/22349__max_news.jpg
Two displays of 92 sqm each were mounted as far back as in February. In May, the specialists laid communication networks. Fitting of the system control room was followed by installation of equipment to operate two giant LED displays. Today the huge monitors are being set up and tested.
”We have connected three computers to the system”, says Aleksey Tereshchenko, a business development manager for Philips. ”Also, we have installed software developed by inhouse experts. The main computer controls the whole system. Another one operates large LED displays. The third computer will cover the banner line of LED displays along the pitch perimeter”.
The system was assembled like a giant Meccano set. At the moment we are routing the power and information signal lines. LEDs flash up in different colours displaying related symbols. This is how specialists check if all elements are correctly connected.
The banner line of LED displays will also be mounted soon. It will be 267 metres long. According to Philips experts, these banner-displays will be easily demountable to construct an additional large mobile display.

http://shakhtar.com/data/imgdata/foto/news/22485__max_news.jpg
The 5-star Donbass Arena has presented its bowl, which came to be a big event for the city. Visitors were more than excited. Everybody took out his camera, mobile - in a word whatever came to hand - and started filming and snap shooting the seats, the lawn, the stands, the displays, the roof... Men, women and boys and girls competed in sharing their impressions.
"I just can't describe my emotions. The roof is the most impressing thing. RSK Olimpiyskiy doesn't have it. I believe here will be quite a different - thrilling - gaming atmosphere", says a young boy Artur Gubka.
While the supporters were looking around, Stepan Mikhailov, the guide, told them about the distinctions of Donetsk Diamond and advanced technologies applied during its construction. The fans saw, where the footballers' locker rooms, the Club's Museum and the FC Shakhtar brand shop will be located. Many wanted to get to the seats, for which they bought season tickets.
"The stadium is just great!" with tears in his eyes exclaims Sergey Sovetov, who came here together with his little son. "We didn't even expect the stadium to be like that! The pitch, the scale, the seats - everything is really impressive. Everything is perfect! We've never seen anything like this before. Our seats will be in Sector 120 just in a big letter "A". We really want to touch them”.
The bowl was presented by Oleksandr Atamanenko, Donbass Arena Operations Director. He thanked everybody for buying the season tickets and told, why Donetsk stadium can fairly claim to be the best European football facility.
"Now that you’ve been our friends, I'd like to say once again: welcome to Donbass Arena!”
When the footballers appeared on the pitch, the stand burst into chanting "Shakhtar, Shakhtar!" Everybody was just petrified, as this was the first time Donbass Arena bowl saw the fans. Let’s see what happens when the stands are fully packed!
