I must agree that this stadium is simply amazing. I hope Donetsk makes good use of it. Would be a shame if a stadium of that beauty and capacity would go to waste unused.

In my opinion there is little difference overall between Ukraine FA schedule and Russian season regarding players and rest in particular the internationals who end up playing all year, however Russian model would be better for would be better for the fanatics.

Russian model
Start- mid March
mid season break mid may- 1st week july
finish 1st week december

off season dec/jan/feb

pre season for teams warm season training camps usually-spain/middle east starting from feb

Ukraine model
Start July
mid season break 1st week december to 1st week march
finish end may

off season june

pre season camp in june then mid season pre season! camp as with Russia in Feb

The only problem for Russia and former Russian countries although you wouldnt know it given their good european results (shakhtar/zenit/cska uefa cup winners) last few years is european matches go into December and start up in February both of which fall loutside the playing season and its freezing, forget the players, freezing for the fanatics-anyone who lives there or has been there will know given the weather attendances are excellent, believe me try enjoying watching a match when temperatures are any lower than 3 degrees

Belarus and Ukraine is also the country's Russian. I'm talking about the cultural Russian people, who speak Russian and read Russian books, newspapers, watch movies and TV in Russian ... After all, Ukrainians (except the western, which is a mixture of many people and most of them Catholics) and Belarusians are part of the Russian people.
Do any resident of Donetsk more in common with the inhabitants of Odessa, Crimea, Moscow, St. Petersburg and other Russian than with western Ukrainians.

GET OVER IT U GUYS!
I spent extensive time in Eastern Europe in particular Russia and Ukraine, there is as much difference between the way i interacted with them as there is for English/welsh/scottish- in other words none! Siberia and Vladivostock is like another continent let alone anything else this is where there is a real difference its not just me my personal experience, most all Western europeans view Russia as one, that is the western part of russia including ukraine and belarus. Just like they view uk as one england scotland wales and ireland-its climate and geographical changes that have the biggest impact on how different cultures are. If all the world was geographically very similar say just for example all like holland then we would all be dutch in nature and culture....:badnews:

I stand by my claim all humans are basically culturally the same and the major differences to be found are when climate and geographical locations/living environment are of extreme contrast. I am no expert but have lived and worked in 16 countries, consulted and breifly worked in 34 different countries in total. I found everyone had the same basic desires, the fact that some pray some don't etc and minor things like this have very little impact in communicating and working alongside each other. That is my opinion and i am not trying to make any point really i was just sick of Ukraine vs Russia pointless arguments just like England vs Scotland i am familiar with this kind of situation.

Regarding Donetsk so i am not guilty of going off topic, the stadium has had a big impact on the city as i see it from an outsider point of view and that may well be the start of a new thread- Which stadiums have impacted most on the cities/towns where they have been built. Its quite interesting for example everyone knows London but Wembley without the stadium complex would be about as well known as nearby stanmore. Just another London suburb, the way Wembley has developed and the whole buzz of the place is 'the stadium'. Yet if you were to contrast it with nearby QPR in London that area is thriving and has no relative buzz or survival based on a stadium being there. Going back to Donetsk i find it difficult to imagine the city without its high profile football team and stadium. It would simply be just another industrial backwater overlooked. Its truly amazing the power of football what it can do to places and i think Donetsk is a great example of that. I was glad to be a part of that.

This is a first class stadium, no doubts there, you can see they have gone to a lot of effort and there's a lot of TLC in it's upkeep and general surroundings.

I guess the issue is that it's so good it upstages the rest of the city. I mean if you got a nice stadium like this then your airport should look like Hong Kong to match, or your roads should all be A-grade Autobahns. I guess the point is it's so far ahead of the curve in terms of infrastructure compared to other parts of Donetsk that it sticks out a bit, a diamond in the rough of sorts.

Still, a grade-A stadium, well done. Best in the Ukraine and one of the best in Europe, if not the world in it's class.

No, final is being played in the redevloped Olympic stadium in Kiev. By the looks of things it's only hosting three group games

31 matches will be played during Euro 2012, with Ukraine hosting 16 matches and Poland 15. The breakdown of hosting duties is as follows:

Warsaw: 3 group matches including the opening match, quarter-final, and semi-final (5 matches in total)
Gdańsk: 3 group matches
Wrocław: 3 group matches
Poznań: 3 group matches
Kiev: 3 group matches, quarter-final, semi-final, and final (6 matches in total)
Lviv: 3 group matches
Kharkiv: 3 group matches

Donbass Arena To Qualify For Hosting UEFA Europa League Final In 2014

Donbass Arena stadium (Donetsk) will qualify for hosting the final match of the UEFA Europa League in 2014, reads a statement made by the press service of the football club Shakhtar Donetsk.

"This match may take place in Donetsk after all proper infrastructure is built for EURO 2012 [the airport, hotels, transport, roads). We have already sent an official enquiry to the Union of European Football Associations for obtaining documents required for hosting such a match. Approximate date is 2014," Donbass Arena Director-General Oleksandr Atamanenko said.

He notes, he has already had meetings over this matter with the mayor of Donetsk, Oleksandr Lukyanchenko, and they decided that the city and the stadium will submit an application to qualify for hosting the UEFA Europa League final.

As Ukrainian News earlier reported, Donbass Arena was planning to qualify for hosting the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League in 2012.

FC Shakhtar Donetsk opened the Donbass Arena stadium in August 2009.

awesome stadium, best in eastern Europe and in europes top 10 (cant be europe's best because of it size), But is great on the sightlines, the roof, exterior, seat colors, even the surrounding landscaping is soo good.

On the pictures from the exterior, just add some arches and looks like baby Cowboys Stadium

There are two very simple structural elements to this stadium which in my opinion make it stand above many other stadia. Its actually so simple its genius

1. Three tiers yet 50,000 capacity-this gives it a huge feel yet it is so compact at the same time very clever in a world dominated by new build 2 tier stadia. Very rare for this size stadia to appear to have 3 major tiers.

2. Oval/circular/rounded roof on a rectangular tribune arrangement-as above matches something that is not normally done giving that 'different' feel

Of course there are many other things and the fit out is amazingly impressive but i still stand by those two simple elements of mis matching if you like the most important features has worked incredibly well.

I don't know the living standard in Ukraine but 2 bucks per ticket must be quite cheap by Ukrainian standards as well. I'm pretty sure Canada isn't 10 times richer than Ukraine but even if it were, 20 bucks per ticket would be considered dirt cheap for any sporting event.

DA project dedicated to ensure spectators are warm
http://shakhtar.com/data/imgdata/foto/news/71112__full_news.jpg

The Donbass Arena infrared heating project involves warming the stadium stands by special under-roof gas burners manufactured by German company Schwank. The burners will be connected to the gas-feeding main.

“Infrared heating is the only way to make the match-viewing experience more comfortable for the spectators seating in the stands. The equipment has the advantage of warming up the necessary objects instead of the open-space air,” Vadim Gun’ko, the Facility Director at the stadium explains.

As far as spectator seats are located at different distances from the roof carrying the natural gas main, they plan to fit two kinds of infrared heaters of different heating capacity and maximum heating distance. The first will radiate heat for the bottom tier audience, while the second will be helpful for the middle and top tiers.

“The heaters operating on the radiant heat principle have a weather protection screen for increased wind resistance and special devices for safe operation. The latter will switch off the system, ensure its remote operation from the control room as well as automated system operation and monitoring.”

The infrared heating system at the Donbass Arena will make it possible for us to either warm up the entire bowl or scale the operation down to some individual areas. There will be 36 heated areas (12 at each tier) to achieve varying temperature differentials for individual stands, tiers and even blocks. Moreover, the system provides for the option of putting on every second burner should the ambient temperature reach above zero.

“Obviously, when we talk about heating, it does not quite mean making it as hot as in summer,” Vadim Gun’ko explains further. “There are certain IR radiation limitations imposed in line with the sanitary standards. It means the bowl temperature increase of 6-14 degrees Celsius. It should be understood that the first tier’s lowest rows (about 50m away from the heaters) will feel the least warmth, whereas the top tier can feel it the most.”

One of the specific features of such systems’ application at stadiums is the so-called shade zones. Those include the spectator seats at Level 5 (VIP boxes) and the positions for the people with disabilities. However, under no circumstances whatsoever will they be caused any inconvenience.

“Simultaneously with mounting the gas infrared heaters we also fulfill the electric infrared heating project for those shaded areas. Besides, we are about to accomplish installation of the special protecting screens in the public area of Level three to divert the wind flowing in through the lattice gates. Thus, I can confidently repeat the statement by Aleksandr Atamanenko about the first matches in 2011 to be enjoyed by the people with disabilities and their carers from the warmth and comfort of their positions inside the stadium bowl.

As far as the project’s spending side is concerned, we cannot cite its total cost until we put the mounting operations out to tender and get a complete picture.

According to Vadim Gun’ko the equipment is worth millions of euros. “Nevertheless,” he stressed, “the operating costs (natural gas plus maintenance) will not exceed UAH 1-2 per one spectator throughout one match. And that’s pretty little money when we talk about our fans’ convenience.”

Safe warmth for FC Shakhtar fans

http://shakhtar.com/data/imgdata/foto/news/71387__full_news.jpg

The safety of spectators was among major requirements to be fulfilled by the designers of the infrared heating equipment for the Donbass Arena. Indeed, this under-roof structure poses no threat to the viewers at all.

“The infrared heating equipment has the overall tonnage of a few dozen, which is the acceptable weight, it was taken into account during stadium construction,” Vadim Gun’ko explains. “Besides, this value is several times less than the designed snow load on the roof (about 3,000 tons).”

Of course, before designing they calculated the load-carrying capacity for the roof. At the project preparation stage they received all the necessary approvals from both the prime contractor & design company ENKA and MERO-TSK, the designers of the roof steel structure, including space frames and trusses.

“We received a comprehensive conclusion about the design’s full correspondence to the current requirements,” Vadim Gun’ko reassures. “The ample design load factor notwithstanding, we are not going to mount anything else under the arena’s roof. After the assembly is complete, the spectators will be able to watch Shakhtar home matches feeling even more comfortable and safe in the Donbass Arena stands.”

Hello everybody,

I have some questions about Shakhtar stadium. If there is specialists of the club and they could answer me, it will be fantastic

- What was the impact of the stadium building on the different public attending the game (fans groups, other fans, partners, business seats clients etc)? How the stadium building was appreciated by these publics?
- Today, are there problems with the public (tickets prices, stadium accesibility because of the building for example)?

- What was the communication strategy worked up by the club?
- What was the communication worked up during the building period concerning the building (creation of website/blog allowing people to look at the building progress etc)?
- What communication did the club work up when the building was finished?

- What were the tools the club chose for club communication (website, interviews of players or club rulers, radio, press, posters etc.)?
- What were the points the club focused on when they were communicating on the stadium (architecture, finances, sponsors, etc.)?

Thank you for your cooperation !!!

As it was announced earlier, the first Ukrainian project involving stadium infrared heating is underway to make spectators feel warm. But the fans with disabilities can enjoy the match-viewing experience with a difference much earlier, on 8 March, during FC Shakhtar’s first home match this year. The fixture is the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 return leg against AS Roma.

“Notwithstanding the fact that we provide our disabled fans with every special convenience – disabled parking, ramped approaches, tailor-made easy access seats and positions in the stands, separate toilets – the visitors on wheelchairs still faced great inconvenience in cold weather, which was augmented by the disabled seats location,” Vadim Gun’ko, the Facility Director of Donbass Arena Ltd told us. "The matter is that those seats are windy because of their close location to the air deflectors which improve natural air circulation over the pitch turf."

“Thus, our decision was to maximally improve the wintertime match-viewing experience for this category of fans in the first place,” Vadim Gun’ko further explained. "The disabled areas were fitted out with special aluminium blinds. They will serve as an air flow barrier. During matches they will be shut to prevent the fans from draughts, while for the rest of time they will be open (which is more important in summer) to ensure natural air flow over the turf. Moreover, we have equipped the locations with an energy-efficient intellectual infrared electric heating system. Simp

It looks really cheap to western eyes but remember, the average annual income in Ukraine is only about $6,600 compared to about $47,000 in the US. In relative terms the prices are probably similar to tickets in America or Western Europe.

Yes exactly! 2$ for a ticket is not bad at all, even for ukraine's standard. Compare it with beer prices in a bar, or cigarettes prices, thats how you know how expensive it really is :D

Sorry for my poor english.

Start slow, i am curious about some of these questions too: So for shakhtar fans, could you answer at least this question:
What impact did the stadium cause on attendance numbers for games? (Compared to the old municipal stadium)
How did the stadium impact the local economy (Stadium location/businesses)
What type of people come to games, more ultras/more family?

For those asking about attendance.
Shaktar used to average about 15-19k for the previous ten years.

Last year they averaged 27k (of which half the season was with the new stadium)

So far this year (10 games) they are averaging 33,665.

Donbass Arena turf protected from heat

21-07-11 10:58:49

A unique project has been launched by the Donbass Arena experts in order to ensure comfortable environment for the turf recovery and growth in the blistering heat, helping to protect the pitch surface from overexposure to the solar radiation.

“We faced the turf-shading problem back in the summer of 2010, when extremely high temperatures were registered in Donetsk, with the turf surface temperature rising well above 40 degrees Celsius”, Vadim Gun’ko, the Facility Director at the Donbass Arena explains. “In such extreme conditions the grass cannot develop properly, it just gets dry. On the other hand, the irrigation system is not helpful cooling-wise, because over-watering may harm the grass. Besides, at high ambient temperatures the turf gets highly vulnerable to mechanical damage, also putting matches at risk.”

After a joint examination of the pitch response to high temperatures, involving STRI representatives, the stadium senior management came to the conclusion that the turf would need some extra protection for a few weeks every summer.

“Back in 2010 we found a solution and used the white wintertime coating to shade the pitch, at the same time using SGL mobile units to support the coating. Back then we fulfilled the immediate task and saved most of the turf,” Vadim Gun’ko sums up.

There was no ready-made solution anywhere in the world then (though something similar exists at Camp Nou), therefore we decided to develop our own turf-shading system. Thus, we designed a suspended system, which includes a number of ropes attached to the middle tier’s bearing structures, with special protective cloth sliding along to protect the pitch from direct sunlight.

“When designing it, we took into consideration the maximally possible wind speed inside the bowl, rain factor etc. Finally, we obtained the system which can be set up over the period of one to two days, and easily dismantled after use,” the Facility Director further explains.

Such system enables us to create shade over a greater portion of the pitch, fixing the protective cloth some 6-6.5 m above the turf surface, ensuring irrigation system’s smooth operation and unobstructed access for maintenance purposes, even when special equipment is deployed.

“We currently work on improving the unwinding and rolling-up process in order to mechanize it to the maximum,” Mr Gun’ko continues. “Along with the pitch turf injection technology, this system will help us improve the pitch surface quality and to host the upcoming EURO 2012 tournament - as well as European and domestic League matches - to the highest standards available."

This movie is about 3 yrs old, well done but I watched it and I didn't get what is about?! What was the message? You can't change bad for good very fast, especially when 15 yrs (since 1988 `till 2003) in Ukraine was no changes for better, not even a signes!

Terrific stadium.

Now if the good people of Donetsk could actually get round to building some hotels so the thousands of fans with Euro 2012 tickets won't have to sleep on park benches, that would be nice.

You are correct. Its a bit higher in one end than the other. You can easily see it in this picture http://s60.radikal.ru/i170/0909/35/0aad177b9514.jpg

do you know if there was an specific reason for that?

Yes - better sun coverage (lower end is southern end) and air circulation, which is needed for the pitch health. And another reason is aesthetics - it resembles sorrounding hilly landscape.

Absolutely amazing stadium. The best one for EURO2012, no doubt. And what a brilliant sorrounding!!
Questions for Donetsk people or someone not as lazy as me:
1. What's the average attendance for Shakhtar games (esp. for league games, as I suppose it's mostly full for Champions League) ?
2. What are the average ticket prices for both national league and CL ?

^^ It would be a great stage for a Champions League Final but unfortunately it is too small. Given the criteria demanded by UEFA at the moment even The Allianz Arena is borderline. It seems they prefer a 70k+ athletics stadium over any 50 to 65k football stadium.
It is fine for Europa Finals though.

I guess Donbass Arena will be EL-final in some years. It's really a beauty from inside and outside. What a shame Donetsk played so bad this year in cl.

If only the UEFA wouldn't focus on money so much. Stadiums like this one and the Allianz Arena are perfect for a EURO or CL final.

Not sure if it´s necessary to do so but, if it is, it´s something easy to do...a lot of clubs have to do that for European matches...either Champions or Europa League.
