View Full Version : Baltimore-Washington Area Photo Thread
BalWash February 2nd, 2007, 03:40 AM Alright, we need a consolidated thread for exceptional photos of Baltimore, Washington and the surrounding area.
I'll start off with a photo I took of the Jefferson Memorial when I was 14:

Start posting your amazing shots!
StevenW February 2nd, 2007, 04:29 AM Excelent idea, BalWash. :)
MDguy February 2nd, 2007, 05:40 AM very good Idea! Great picture too!
PeterSmith February 2nd, 2007, 05:56 AM I was hoping someone would start this thread! Thanks, BalWash. This deserves a sticky, I think. Do you think it would be better to have a Baltimore photo thread and a DC one? There is enough to photograph in each city to fill up two threads, plus we'd probably get a lot of, "Is that in DC or Baltimore?"
PeterSmith February 2nd, 2007, 06:04 AM I'll contribute some photos from my collection. These are probably two years old at this point though....

StevenW February 2nd, 2007, 10:18 PM Very crisp picture, Northern. :)
I like it.
BalWash February 3rd, 2007, 01:29 AM Here are some pictures of my small corner of the metro area, Bethesda-Chevy Chase.
The Bethesda Row:

I love wet pavement! Apparently neon signs are too expensive to replace for Bvlgari or should I say Bvlari? :ohno:

Sorry, my ISO was too high, but this is the best I have for now  . Inside the Lockheed Martin Lobby of the Strathmore Music and Arts Center in North Bethesda:

Here is a picture I took a photograph of in a Bethesda art gallery painted by Rob Gonsalves who is most likely the most important surrealist in the Western Hemisphere. His main gallery is in Bethesda! I think you'll all like this particular piece due to everyone's obvious love of skyscrapers.

PeterSmith February 3rd, 2007, 02:46 PM Great pictures, BalWash. I'll admit, it's been a while since I've been through Bethesda. Do you have any more pics? Particularly more street-level ones during the daytime?
StevenW February 3rd, 2007, 03:41 PM Love that picture above! :)

Unfortunately not. I'll definately be taking a ton of pics when I'm home over spring break though.

micrip February 4th, 2007, 11:15 AM Now that football season is almost over, we turn to thoughts of spring... This was taken Labor Day 2005. Remember this view...it won't be the same after the Hilton goes up.

Me wishing that Baltimore's skyline was this impressive!!

StevenW February 4th, 2007, 11:47 PM ^^ Awesome mountain range. Where is it at? :?
NovaWolverine February 5th, 2007, 06:02 AM Sorry if I'm not allowed to post this aerial, Flash from SSP took it. Here's one of DC.
http://metroscenes.com/aerial/aerial_07_01.jpg
Go to http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?t=124947 for some of the other pics of Providence, NYC, Philly, B'more and DC.
This is his website.
http://metroscenes.com/
The reason I like the aerials of his, is b/c it shows some of the area north of DT, there is an area called NoMa, among others, but anyway, these are the areas experiencing a lot of growth and it'll be interesting how these neighborhoods will have transformed in the next 10 yrs or so. I'm talking about near NY Ave. where Fur nightclub and the new ATF HQ is being built. Also the area west of here near the convention center and further north on GA. Ave. The other aerials show this better but are wider shots and not zoomed in as much.
NovaWolverine February 5th, 2007, 06:09 AM http://beyonddc.com/galleries.shtml
This is the gallery section of BeyondDC.com. If you haven't checked it out, you really ought to. It has a wealth of information and great pictures and features along with a message board that I can't help but suggest if you're into DC/B'more development.
micrip February 5th, 2007, 06:39 AM ^^ Awesome mountain range. Where is it at? :?
It is the view from a ridge north of Cottonwood Pass, Colorado. I was standing at about 12,300 feet when the picture was taken by my cousin. Some of the peaks in the distance are over 14,000 feet. And that view extended almost 360 degrees around that spot...I'd post more, but they would be off-topic for the group.
Northern February 9th, 2007, 12:05 AM Not too original, but those aerials are insane! Should not be too hard to find this location on the aerial above.

BalWash February 21st, 2007, 10:06 PM PeterSmith's great photoshop deserves to be in this thread:
Here is my first attempt at photoshopping Baltimore's future skyline. I added in:
1. 10 Inner Harbor
2. 300 East Pratt St.
3. 414 Water St.
4. 701 East Baltimore St.
5. The Vue
6. Four Seasons Tower
7. Legg Mason Tower
Still missing that should appear in the shot are:
1. The Zenith
2. Hilton Headquarters Hotel
3. CityScape
4. Naing Towers

terrapinoy February 23rd, 2007, 04:19 PM Yes, I took them from the Convention Center during the car show. I found the construction site outside as intriguing as the cars on display inside.
micrip February 24th, 2007, 10:19 AM Neat shots. The angled view corridor for the ballpark is already clearly visible.

Westsidelife February 25th, 2007, 07:40 AM Very nice! IMO, Bal/Wash is the best, most interesting metro on the East Coast. :)
micrip February 25th, 2007, 08:02 AM Re: that shot from the Washington monument...it's neat to see how the skyline looks as viewed from the north. It differs so much from the classic view from the south that a lot of non-locals (and maybe some that are) would not even recognize it as Baltimore.
StevenW February 25th, 2007, 03:36 PM ^^ Yeah, and other view you don't see often, and I like a lot, is the view looking from the west. Very cool as well. :)

MtVernator March 1st, 2007, 12:30 AM Great pics! You can find lots of pictures of old Baltimore at the Maryland Historical Society site. They include pictures of the 1904 fire and many building that no longer exist. There is also a section on then and now.

StevenW March 3rd, 2007, 12:40 AM Yeah, I've always enjoyed taking photos, myself. ;) :jk:
getontrac March 3rd, 2007, 02:43 AM I wonder if the new Mercy building will build only to Franklin St or if it will eliminate Franklin altogether and build all the way north to the Viaduct.
I hope it's the latter, that way the building will fully obscure the view of the Guilford garage.
Nate

PeterSmith March 14th, 2007, 01:23 AM I agree, the Eden Apartments are a great addition. As I said before, I'm digging the scale of the building. There are no plans as of yet for the site immediately to the west because of an ongoing lease agreement, right?
Anyway, great pics, Jeff.

You don't quite get a feel for the bulk of the Legg Mason tower until you see a shot like that. Up close it dosn't sem to big. That skyline will hopefully look radically diffrent with some of those 700+ footers.

PeterSmith May 3rd, 2007, 11:23 PM ^^ I recall reading, perhaps more than a year ago, that a number of furniture stores that had opened up in the Harbor East area were either closing down or thinking about closing down because the demand that drove them to open up, namely Harbor East, was decreasing. I guess with the Vue, Four Seasons, 414 Water St. and all the other newly built homes around downtown have been enough to keep them open.
Will Ethan Allen occupy the entire ground level?

southbalto June 11th, 2007, 02:24 PM How do I post a photo?
You have to first upload it to a host site. I use photobucket.com
Once that's done, you can either post a link to the picture or you can insert the picture in the body of your skyscrapercity.com post by bookending the address.

Awesome! If I didn't know Harbor East, I would think this was a picture of a small city's main skyline. It really is starting to look like an entirely new, second downtown. Can't imagine what it'll look like when the Legg Mason building is finished!
waj0527 June 14th, 2007, 03:19 AM ^^ Nice find.
The Marriott Baltimore Waterfront looks slender in this pic for some reason.

the four seasons building is the one i'm really waiting for......a whoppin' 44 stories!!
PeterSmith June 18th, 2007, 08:24 PM I was bouncing around Baltimore today, so I made sure to take my camera with me. I snapped a few shots before I had to call it quits cause of the heat. I apologize if you find the photos too large, although I happen to actually like it when people post large photos (more detail). Anyway, hope you enjoy!
This is the first skyline shot I've ever taken from Federal Hill. I must be the last person to join the club.

414 Water St. is just about finished, and looking very nice, I think.

Not a whole lot new over at Harbor East, but still looking good.
http://img114.imageshack.us/img114/5336/img2509vv9.jpg
I never really thought about it until I saw it in person, but picturing this view with the Pinnacle and two other Harborview-like towers actually seems like it will look good.

I also had a chance to drop in on the Basilica and snapped this shot. The two frescas just below the dome, as well as two others not in view, were painted by my great-great grandfather, Philip Nengel, in 1865. They were recently recovered during the renovation, after having been lost since 1870.

And one final bonus shot of the Enoch Pratt Free Library across from the Basilica, also a beautiful building.

Also, someone had mentioned in a thread the billboard of the Natty Boh guy proposing to the Utz girl. I snapped a quick shot of that too.

I'm visiting the Washington - Frederick, MA (and the eastcost) for the first time this fall, with my high school class, and seeing these makes me even more excited then I already am!
I'm gonna keep my eye on this one, so keep them comming. And, if anyone has some of Frederick and the sorrounding area, please post them, as I can't seem to be able find any on the net. And yes yes, I know it is not EXACTLY in the DC-Bal. area.
edit: Found a thread, but still. :)

Kaneda June 20th, 2007, 01:03 AM Frederick, MD?
Well then MA. Dun't know why I had come to the conclusion, that MD was the abbreviation for Maryland.
micrip June 20th, 2007, 08:37 AM Great shots, beautiful cities.
Just curious...why Frederick? Will you also be visiting Baltimore, and possibly Annapolis (a far more historic...and well preserved, place)?

My high school has a kind og exchange agreement with a high school just outside Frederick, so we'll be satying there fore 5 or so days, and then we'l go to Washington for five days. I'm not wuite sure about our plans on what to see, but I think we'll be ging to Annapolis.

What high school is that? And I think you will have a good time in Frederick, but five days seems like a really long time in Frederick. Its not that big, but its a very attractive little town :). i have one pic of Frederick

I really like every aspect of the composition of this shot, although it probably could have been exposed a little better. Great capture!
Edit: I really love the Zenith and Bromo Selzer is looking good in blue, although Ravens purple would be better.

The glass skin/windows in that building can be as translucent or opaque as the resident wants.

81 times a year for the O's...but it would be neat to see the fireworks after the friday night games.

I allowed for the dozen or so day games that they play. Now if they make the postseason sometime this century, then maybe 81....

As an aside, was anyone anywhere near the Inner Harbor yesterday around 6:30? There was some sort of fake war going on with cannons being shot from boats and everything. Very bizarre.

Come down my way (SoBo). Everyone who moves in sweeps religiously -- for about 3 weeks, until they get tired of cleaning up everyone else's beer bottles, rotting food, used napkins, spent fireworks, half-drank Little Hugs, etc...
Outside of the thoroughly gentrified areas, my sense is that Baltimoreans just don't understand that throwing trash on the ground, wherever you may be, is not acceptable behavior.

Clean is relative so it depends on what you're comparing it with. Simply citing small pockets of cleanliness doesn't sound like a good way to generalize an entire city. Baltimore is special b/c of its historic industrial, blue collar, marine culture. I like it how it is. If you were describe Baltimore in five words, clean wouldn't be anywhere near the top, and there's not a whole lot wrong with that, as long as it doesn't go too far.

While I dont agree with his tone.. he makes very great points.. 1) you cant just pick a couple good streets 2) i think if given 10, mayb as many as 20 words to describe baltimore clean wouldnt be one of them.
Ive lived in Baltimore my whole life.. In general (majority in fact) its not clean at all. What another person said earlier is the exact thought I have always had.. for some reason people dont see anything wrong with throwing trash on the sidewalks or streets.

And I never meant to hurt anyone's feelings with what was said, I don't know how it could be taken that way, I didn't think it was bad. But there are cities out there that are really, really clean that would take some getting used to by me, unlike Baltimore where I feel more at home.

DrzBrooklynChulo90 November 19th, 2007, 02:38 AM Baltimore isnt 100% clean.I Mean,NO city is 100% clean, but my neighbors seem fairly nice. The elderly sweep the streets as if it were inside their own home.he really like where they live and they want it clean.O yea,and thats so stereotypical saying that Baltimoreans just dont care if they just throw trash or not because i guarantee you thats that happens in EVERY single city, not just Baltimore.I wouldnt consider New York a clean city either even though I love New York. It's all a matter of what part of the city your at because there are places in Baltimore that are extremely dirty and embarrasing to look at and theres other places in Baltimore that are unbelievablly clean.

BaltoSteve November 24th, 2007, 06:22 PM ^^^^
Ive been to a lot of cities and I'd say the downtown area of Baltimore is as clean as any you will find most of the time, of course the Clean and Safe team has a lot to do with that. As far as the neighborhoods go it seems to come down to what percentage clean up vs those that don't. I'm always picking up stuff left in the gutters(by visitors for the most part) on my street in Canton just off the square..so do my neighbors. Poorer neighborhoods being dirtier is pretty much a universal problem. One thing I do miss is the Hokey Men who used to sweep up the neighborhoods....streets were certainly cleaner then.
I do think Mayor Dixon is doing a better job of basic street cleaning, etc than Schmoke or O'Malley did...things seem a litttle bit tidier recently...though we got a long way to go!

I Certainly do agree.I Have the same thing in my street. The Elderly always sweeping up the streets and picking up trash.I really feel bad for them because its us younger people who have to stop throwing trash in the first place. But they want their community to be clean and for that,I'm greatful.

I'm not sure if the photographer intended any underlying meaning to this picture taken of the derailed railcars in Locust Point this morning, but I saw this photo and thought it was very symbolic of the transformation that is taking place in Baltimore, and especially in an area like Locust Point.
You've got this derailed car tipped over in the background, and in the foreground there's this young, probably yuppie, wearing three-inch stilettos when there's snow on the ground girl who walks on by without even noticing the railcar. To me, it seemed like a metaphor for where Baltimore is going. The blue-collar heritage is being cast aside and replaced by the new young, urban professional way of life, which trudges on by without so much as batting an eye at what's left of old Baltimore.
jamie_hunt December 7th, 2007, 07:02 PM Hmmm. A second photo shows a considerably less comely fellow schlepping across the tracks heading in the other direction. I'm guessing Sun photographer Kim Hairston was principally interested in a human form to show scale, and we all got lucky that it was this young woman. Then again, I'm hermeneutically challenged that way.
I look at her and I look at this (http://www.pitbullarmory.com/Squirrel-armor.html) ...

Could you imagine DC having no height restrictions! The skyline would
rival Philly or Boston. In my humble opinion.

Yep. It would be bigger. Taller. I believe DC had like the second most office space next to New York City on the east coast. I think it was even more than Chicago. (I could be wrong about that).
