here in SSC-Pilipinas, and perhaps all over SSC, we people keep highlighting the good, the bright, the fascinating, the positive...we almost never fail to showcase the best things about our cities, and would even go to extremes to fight for them should anyone else question these...

but what about a novelty?

the moon has a dark-side, a coin has another face...

in this thread, feel free to post certain things about your city that could qualify as a 'worst'; lets discuss the things that make living difficult in our otherwise pleasant cities; you could also opt to post bad-news; or simply talk about things in your city that piss you off...

examples: that really ugly building that you'd wish to see demolished...or perhaps that misplaced landfill sitting next door to prime real-estate...

Okay, for CAGAYAN DE ORO,

Cogon District: Nice bargain, CdeO's version of Divisoria/Tutuban. But the place hardly gets clean at night after a long day of business..

Velez Street: It's one of main and busiest thoroughfares in the city but the street itself is dull..

slums: i know slums are present in every Philippine city, but in CdeO's case, there are available relocation sites but the people insist on staying in their shanties..

traffic: i usually alot an extra hour and a half for a 10km ride during rush hour..

here in cebu.. the worst center island is located in:
N. Bacalso avenue..
.. shocks, the cement is apparently scraped off diffusely not to mention the unpainted (but actually painted) look on its surface... there are some ugly-looking poles that are of no use, landscaping is as bad as a tree crushed by a storm, and, as usual, there is at least one or two busted lamp posts in every half kilometer.. hehe, i think i did exaggerate but i just can't help it. the center island in basak pardo area is defintely better.. :)

1. The urban sprawl, well lately lang kay ang akong mga project naa sa north sa city, so i have to travel as far as 16-20km, pero mga 25km total ang byahe one way since yung isa is pa left..sa mga taga davao, or familiar sa davao, what i mean is, from skyline, byahe ako pa tigatto (DMMA) tapos balik na naman sa Bajada (Hazels Coffee) tapos byahe pa Nova Tierra... medyo ok na yung pa punta kasi putol putol ang byahe, pero pag pauwi, Nova Tierra to Skyline..arrgh!!..thats around 16 kms, and along that stretch (kasi mga 4-5pm na ako natatapos) i encounter a lot of busy roads,

kalbaryo uno- Damosa Gateway
kalbaryo dos- the 1km stretch from Durian hotel to Gaisano Mall
kalbaryo tres- San Pedro Street
kalbaryo quatro- Ateneo matina to Nccc Mall
kalbaryo singko- Matina Crossing (pinaka mabigat usually 45 minutes traffic on a ±2km stretch)

if only the city were more compact, di di magastos sa pamasahe/gas and n time wasted :)

2.The OA ordinances no smoking sa indoor establishments incl. bars, 2AM liquor ban, no fireworks..no drugs..

3. The fact na kahit ano ka peaceful dito, ignorant people will still consider mindanao an unsafe place..people still get the stigma of wars, bombings, kindappings etc..well sa mga ignoramus at bobo lang naman :)

1. The pedestrian overpasses – the one on Luna St. connecting INHS and WVSU and the other on B. Aquino Avenue fronting SM City are necessary, but the rest (Gen. Luna connecting The Atrium and St. Paul's, Valeria connecting SM Delgado and Marymart Mall, Bonifacio Drive fronting the Capitol, and Iznart fronting Amigo Plaza are just plain ill-advised and impractical. They ruin the ambiance of downtown.
2. The seedy night clubs along Calle Real – sleazy joints along the supposed-to-be heritage conservation area? What is City Planning doing about this? What kind of zoning is this?
3. That old house and commercial billboards at the corner of Iznart and Bonifacio Drive – why can't the government expropriate that property and turn the area into something eye-pleasing, say a park to be used as landing/gathering point for the Dinagyang fluvial parade?

Yung New Bilibid Prison here in Muntinlupa City, sana talagang mailipat na sa ibang lugar naman na mas secluded talaga . Its been decades that we are hosting the facility , although it did not hinder so much the development of our city , still nakakapanghinayang lang coz there are so many productive endeavors that can be done with that very huge land it occupies.
Anyway , may plan naman na maipalipat within this year somewhere else so sana matuloy na .

^^Tama ka @Waway... Oo, marami talagang Cebuanos ang na iirita sa Colon dahil sa itsura ng lugar na parang lumang luma na at napaka gulo. Unlike sa bagong Cebu ngayon which is the midtown and uptown area na modern ang dating at malinis. Pero kung babasehan ang mga feedbacks ng mga turista specially foreign tourists, they find Colon unique and interesting. Pero kaso lang, parang marumi nga talaga at magulo ayon sa mga taga Cebu pero ayon naman sa mga taga ibang lugar, mas maganda pa raw at malinis ang Colon kaysa sa kanilang downtown.
Mas mabuti na rin na may contrast para exciting...hehe
Anyway hinahanapan na naman ng paraan ng local officials para mapaganda pang lalo ang Colon na hindi mawawala ang historical value nya. Pero yun nga mahirap coz of migration, dumadami na ang pumupunta dito sa Cebu tapos wala namang bahay kaya sila natutulog sa tabitabi na lang, walang makakain kaya ayun gumagawa ng crimen. Yan ang malaking problema.

no. laziness is not an endemic disease for the poor only. the fact is poverty is not merely a social problem but a systemic one. the reason poverty persists maybe because poverty is needed in the kind of society we live in. Not only is it needed but it is a direct consequence of it. The best way is to change our society to one that is totally independent of poverty. One way is to empower the poor.
Let us stop assuming that they are always on the receiving end of aid. Once in a while, WE are the ones needing their help. The progress of our country lis in the 30% of our population that are below the poverty line. we should stop thinking that they are a liability and start thinking of them as an asset to our development.
Empowerment entails both political, social, and economic.

Political. we say we have the freeiest electoral system. but we always see political butterflies come election season. Maybe the reason the people don't choose good officials is because all the candidates out there are substandard. Ano pa nga ba ang magagawa mo kung mga kandidato puro mga epal din. Masama din ba kung gawing batayan ng mga mamamayan ang kumukulong sikmura nila para bumoto. Kung tayong burgis may pinagaralan at may pagaari, siyempre iisipin natin iyon. Pero sila walang wala. Patas din naman kung kapakanan nila ang isipin nila.

Social (specifically education)
hindi patas ang edukasyon. kung public schools ay substandard at mga private schools lang minsan may quality, halatang may discrmination na pagdating sa edukasyon kasi sinasabi na natin na tayong may pera lang ang may karapatan sa de-kalidad na edukasyon kasi ang gobyerno natin ayaw ayusin ang batayang edukasyon mula elementarya hanggang highschool.

Economic. aanhin ng taumbayan ang 5% economic growth kung hindi naman din sila makikinabang dito. It should be necessary that our people have direct participation in our economy not just as passive actors or as labor but as stakeholders as well.

1. Insane traffic, getting worse.

2. Horrible/reckless/rude drivers.

3. High cost of living (mostly related to housing), lower than average income.

4. Lack of parks, open spaces (aside from the beach).

5. Lack of public transportation (for a metro area of 5 million people, there is just one MetroRail line)

6. Only one main supermarket chain (Publix). Winn-Dixie sucks!

7. If you're not into the whole clubbing/South Beach scene, there really isn't much to do here.

8. High crime (although probably no worse than most cities)

9. Threat of hurricanes for 6 months of the year.

10. A power grid that is at risk of leaving thousands without power for sometimes weeks resulting from anything more powerful than a weak tropical storm.

11. Unbearable humidity, especially in the summer (thank god for AC!).

12. People who are rude/often don't speak English.

1. Interior roads are worse than you imagine. Potholes here and everywhere. And yes, aspalto lang, not concrete.

I live in Pasay City for almost 10 years na. Here are the worst (even become number one sa buong bansa) things on this place.

- Prostitutions (along edsa-rotonda, mga puta at bugaw na susunod sa 'yo pagnaglalakad ka, makikita mo sila 24hrs sa lugar na ito.)
- Illegal drugs (harap-harapan ang pagbibintahan nito sa isang lugar sa pasay)
- Garbage Everywhere (ipikit mo lang mata mo kapag sumasakay ka ng LRT alam mo na kung sa Pasay ka na, maaamoy mo na ang baho ng palengke)
- Mga buayang chocolate boys (pasay city traffic aide), MMDA at pulis
- Corrupt Local Government (saan ka makakakita na 450M contract para sa paghahakot ng basura na walang bidding?)
- Illegal Gambling (saklaan everywhere)
- Traffic (mapapamura ka sa inis, ?%$@^!!!)
- Uncivilized jeepney at bus drivers (subukan mong magbyahe sa Pasay)
- Illegal jeepney at bus terminals
- Illegal and professional squatters (nakakaawa at nakakainis rin ang mga ito)
- Side walk vendors (hehehe...itatawa ko na lang ito. sila ang mga may ari ng bangketa kaya sa gitna ka na lang ng kalsada maglakad)
- Hold uppers and snatchers (sabihin ko pa kung saan banda maraming snatcher, sa may edsa rotonda papuntang malibay)
- Bar, Beerhouse, Videoke at may floorshow pa!
- Beggars at mga palaboy sa daan
- Maraming tambay at tamad
- Flood (dahil sa basura nagkakaroon ng baha)
- Pollutions (magtambay ka sa EDSA ng tatlong oras at mangulangot ka makikita mo ang polusyon....hehehe! Pwede kang maglakad sa Ilog dahil sa dami ng basura nakalutang.)

Kayo na ang bahalng magdagdag baka may kulang pa!

These are the sad truth about the place I considered as my 2nd home city.

Since the ACC is a walking distance from my boarding house in C. Borces St., Mabolo, I decided to walk.

Along the way, I don't know if it is still there but, there was this 100-m stretch of slum along a particular street (near Cabantan or maybe Cabantan itself, I'm not sure), right along the perimeter of the ACC.

The street has two lanes, but is not used by vehicular traffic.

Right along the entire 100-m stretch or so, are side-by-side shanties made of used materials (used wood, used cartons, used plastic sheets, etc.), each measuring maybe 2.5 x 2.5 meters occupying the entire shoulder and half of the street on both sides.

They had no toilets.

You can see human waste lying around and the smell is not good.

I have never seen a dirtier place in my entire life (and I was a slum dweller when I was younger and have seen slums of all sorts).

I was shocked to know that such a sorry place can co-exist with the world-class ACC, just a stone's throw away, but hidden by high masonry walls.

I'm sorry if I have to disclose this.

1 - OA na ordinances and really unnecessary laws. I have to agree with WaWay on this. I mean, change is necessary for a city to prosper! (Giving ABS-CBN a city ordinance honoring it is quite weird, considering that GMA wasn't even given. Now what?)

2 - Ateneo Grade School and High School TMCs, the best in the worst in Davao, probably the best people you'd like to sock.

3 - Unnecessary overpasses in different areas. Unplanned overpasses, and filthy, moronic overpasses.

4 - The city government's morbid zealousness on maintaining peace and order, peace and order, peace and order, leaving out businesses in the dark because of so many ordinances that get slumped on their faces and leaving the city a very strange mixture of superstrictness.

5 - Laws left implemented but not thoroughly practiced.

6 - Unnecessary projects (the arko in the chinatown is good, but there are greater things for the chinese to toy about.)

...the slum area already existed before the business park was created ...there are plans to completely relocate the illegal settlers in that area in which eventually, the park will have its expansion ....i just hope it will be realized soon....

Really , there are lots of complaints about the single 4-lane road that LP has , to think that on both sides of the road are numerous subdivisions , so the volume of private vehicles using that lone road plus the PUV's , traffic mess is really expected .

There should be a law that forbids politicians to put their names on the projects. After all, it didn't come from their own pockets, it came from our taxes. ay another thing i dont like here in davao is how bisaya is looked down as something for the lower class (by a large percentage of the population).. i mean WTF? bisaya man ang atong roots pero you'll feel it, pag tagalog or english ka, pa sossy ka, pag bisaya ka lago ka..

an example would be sa dati kong office, yung secretary namin, pag medyo well dressed yung pumasok, kakausapin niya ng tagalog, pag madyo wa class naman, bisaya ang gagamitin niyang lenguahe

thats what i envy sa ubang lugar like cebu,, may sense of "language" sila, an example is bisrock..you wont hear bisrock songs played in davao's "upper end stations" pang jeep ra ang bisrock diri..another WTF? ano ba ang difference ng eraserheards at ng aggressive audio maliban sa dialect na ginamit? IMHO same level ang e-heads, parkoya, hale etc at ang aggressive audio..even davao's very own "thavawenyos" isnt popular here among the upper class, pang bakya lang daw which is a shame kay nice ang ilang mga kanta..yung lang po..mahalin sana natin ang sarili nating wika..

yup.thats what I noted when I went to Iloilo. they do have distinct style of jeepneys. with those long fronts. But I guess the long fronts should be shortened due to the limited road space they will occupy especially sa down town area

I personally like this type of public conveyances because of its very current design and size. Very ingenious of Iloilo folks to device such awesome idea. Very telling of their strength in character- willing to come out different amidst Sarao's or San Francisco's popularity.

sa makati maraming nangraraket sa bus. merong may sakit raw, merong out of school, merong mga samahan. magpreach sila, magbebenta ng dried mangoes etc or maghahand out ng card o envelop na nagsasabi tungkol sa cause nila or sa situation nila. nakakagago na gabi gabi may raket.

ang traffic rin sa ayala avenue. kung tutuusin hindi naman dapat ganoon katagal ang ride. ang buses lang sobrang adik mapuno ang bus. kada loading dapat siksikan. kahit ung traffic people parang wala lang.

sa guadalupe halos wala nang space na malalakaran. kasi sobrang extended na ung market, at terminal siya ng papuntang fti, gate 1, pateros, buendia-taft, pedro gil-taft na pujs. may sidewalk vendors pang allowed magvend. at dumadami sila lalo pag xmas season. maraming taong tambay at kasama na rin dmga taga mmda na malapit lang office pero walang ginagawa except maghuli-hulihan once in a while. siguro para akala ng tao may ginagawa talaga sila. :)

I totally agree. Malinis & maganda talaga ang Dasmarinas compared sa Imus & Bacoor, considering na ito ang most populated municipality in Cavite & in our country. Ang problema lang talaga sa Dasma e yung CRIME like holdapan, rambulan & drugs especially in the resettlement areas. Yun lang talaga ang panira sa image ng Dasma.

Correct! Revilla, Remulla at Maliksi-from Imus lahat kaya nagtataka rin ako sa nangyari dun. I remember Imus was the cleanest in Cavite in the 90`s.

i also find it funny na there are only a few davaoenos who can speak "dabawenyo" in my estimate, mga 10-20% lang siguro..lols ( the dialect in davor being the "dabawenyo" dialect that is)

Anyway, let me explain. During the 1900s, Zamboanga was still the leading city, the premiere city of Mindanao. At that time, Zambo is the regional area and parts of Davao are from there. Truthfully, two major languages have been involved at that time that resulted to Davao's development- Japanese and Chavacano. It may be sound very weird to some, but there is what we called as the Davaoeno-Chavacano, but I doubt if it still exists now.

Flash to '50s, many people from Visayas migrated to the land of promise, which mushroomed Cebuano and placed the language as one of the major lingua francas of the island.

^^ Dinabaw, there is a reserch made by zamboanga.com (check it online) about the movement of the creole, and the book Japan Views the Philippines by Lydia Yu-Jose tells the Japanese during the 1930s as a separate and unique entity, thus speaking Japanese as their own language in the city. Maybe the Spanish you knew they were speaking was way back the time of Lord Takayama Ukon, or during the 1915s prior when the Philippines still had that bug...

these are not yet the best jeeps coz the better deisgned ones are "mahirap matimingan makuhanan ng pictures" :D

Here in Sacramento we deperately need a new arena the old arco arena is getting old and outdated needs be replaced by a new and much modern facility. Last election the voters of sacramento voted no on measures Q and R wich a tax increase that would help pay for a new arena but voters did not realize the impact to the city. The old arco is situated north 10 min commute outside downtown area the plan was the new arena will be built in the downtown area where the old rail yards is but the sacramentant didnt feel the need to have a new arena. If built the economic benefits is worth investing. Larger arenas generate more profits. Now the Sacramento kings is looking for a home city maybe Las Vegas or Los Angeles. I hope they will never turn away their sacramento fans and leave the city.

May sidewalks naman kahit paano , its just that its narrow at plain ang pagkakagawa . Actually , according to the oldtimers , the national road traversing Muntinlupa was originally only a two-lane road and had been expanded to four lanes many years ago. According to them , the houses and establishments were demolished for that expansion . As of now , medyo difficult na mag demolish coz halos mga lowrise commercial buildings na nakaline up sa road . Anyway , okay pa naman at may mga choke points lang like sa tapat ng City Hall . Kapag nalipat na ang City Hall sa maba-vacate na NBP area , dapat siguro na i-expand ay yung JP Rizal street from two-lane to four-lane , or better alternative ay i-expand pa ang exit road ng Susana Heights sa SSH at gawan ng access road from Susana to NBP area in the future .
