Also... L.A. sister cities with Iran? I'm guessing that's not official...

Amazing thread Gilgamesh, thank you. Hehe, Caracas looks very similar to Tehran in that picture.

A while ago, Istanbul was listed as one of Tehran's sister cities in some official list. But now it's not.

It maybe was a misstake, does anyone know about it?

^ I'm not too sure, I think it still is

Also Vatican City was supposed to be but after the pope's outburst against Islam, Iran halted the action...

Great job Gilgamish....can someone explain to me what " sister" city actually means?

Gilgamesh
February 5th, 2007, 11:17 AM
^^

Town twinning is a concept whereby towns or cities in geographically and politically distinct areas are paired with the goal of fostering human contact and cultural links. In Europe, such pairs of towns are known as twin towns, friendship towns or, in North America and Australasia, the term sister cities is used for the same concept. Twin towns often (though by no means always) have similar demographic and other characteristics.

The concept can be likened to a scaled up version of a "pen pal" scheme, in which the "pals" are whole towns or cities. In practice, the twinning arrangements often lead to student exchange programs, as well as economic and cultural collaborations.

The city of Jászberény is located one hundred kilometers east of Budapest, Hungary. The 'Jász' (pronounced YASS) people are of Iranian descent and settled near the rivers Zagyva and Tarna together with the 'Kun' people during the course of the thirteenth century. The Hungarian rulers granted the Jász special privileges.

It is official, the sister city agreement was signed before the 1979 revolution, today it is one of the only links Iran has with the US. They signed it probobly because of Los Angeles' large population of Iranians, it is the largest center of Iranian Diaspora in the world.

Sister cities are cities which cooperate in social, economical, cultural questions. For example, it can be that 2 cities have big traffic-problems, so they cooperate to solve it.

Aw Thank you.

So one questions. How would Los Angeles and Tehran be sister cities, I mean in what way did they help each other out?

Thanks Omid
