View Full Version : "Please move to the very back of the bus" | Discussion
dchengg February 3rd, 2007, 07:20 PM Why does people dont like the very last portion of the bus?
sometimes, when i wait for the bus
and my stop gets skipped..
i look at the bus
THE BACk IS EMPTYYY
everyone huddles around the door
and blocks the way..
its just very annoying~~~
yesterday while taking the bus,
the drive said
"Move to the very back please"
"This bus wont bite"
"It's a very big bus"
and i was actually at the very end alraedy
but not much people filled up the space
but was quite funny how the driver said it.
zivan56 February 3rd, 2007, 10:38 PM ^^ Some people are paranoid that they won't be able to get out. This is true sometimes, as I have to get to the door right after people get off the bus at the stop before mine.
The hilarious thing is when the bus is practically empty and some person decides to go the very back and block everyone in the very last row from getting out...or steps on your feet even though there bus has 60ft of free standing space...
Overground February 3rd, 2007, 11:01 PM Because there is a certain element of society that has 0 common sense. These are the same people that stay in the middle lane while driving, or stand on the left instead of the right on an escalator, or carry large rucksacks on the bus and take out elderly people.
Or they wait 5 mins in a queue at a restaurant to spend another 5 mins when they get to the register to figure out what they want to eat. And my favourite one, the idiots that put gum in an ashtray. Not all humans can be smart unfortunately.
Rusty Gull February 3rd, 2007, 11:48 PM One thing for sure is that many of these buses were neither designed to be standing-room only or standing-in-the-back. If they were, there would be adequate exits for those stuck there.
One other thing to consider: it's actually quite dangerous to stand up on the back platform of the bus while it's moving.

No bus is really made for this. It's a technical limitation due to engine placement. However, in regards to the articulated buses used in Vancouver, one person could block 2/3 of the people in the back by standing in the stairway to the back.

I guess I am lucky I survived after all these years...especially considering the downhill run from SFU to Production Way. The worst thing that ever happened to me was pushing against the person in front of me when the driver braked suddenly. Nowhere close to dangerous...
spongeg February 5th, 2007, 01:20 AM all the scarey ruffians sit in teh back
Huhu February 6th, 2007, 04:43 AM People standing by the doors are supposed to keep a lookout and make sure nobody's trapped on. Well that's what I do when I stand by the doors anyways.
Rhino February 6th, 2007, 08:51 AM what the hell does this have to do with anything? Im just curious.
dchengg February 6th, 2007, 09:35 AM what the hell does this have to do with anything? Im just curious.
nothing, this is just random,
by everytime i go on the bus afterschool,
everyone is like this.
so i'd thought of making a topic thinking how others would think about this
Rhino February 6th, 2007, 09:36 PM oh ,fair enough . ;)
worldwide February 7th, 2007, 12:32 PM yep its cause people really do have no common sense. i see the most ridiculous stuff on the bus and skytrain. people stand not paying attention and block everyone from sitting down in empty seats. people who try and push their way on to the skytrain before the passengers exit. people who stay sitting right next to you even when other empty seats open up.
these are the same people who get in your way on the sidewalk, stand half way up staircases for no reason and throw cigarette butts in garbage cans.
zivan56 February 8th, 2007, 04:37 AM ^^ I agree 100%. We need to teach "common sense" classes at elementary school level. Last year I remember one person waiting for the door to open at the back of a trolley without stepping down; then she started yelling "back door!" at the driver. Also, I regularly see people on the B-Line who wait for the door to open without pushing on the bar; are they practicing their telepathic skills? As often someone opens it for them....
Also annoying is people pushing you forward in a line thats not moving....what is this supposed to accomplish? I know pickpockets often do this, so I often ask "what are you doing?" just to embarrass them.
The list goes on and on, do these people have brains?
spongeg February 8th, 2007, 07:04 AM i know when i have been on the bus and i stand near the door and i don't move its because i am getting off within a stop or two - i am not going to move to the back of the bus so i will just let people past and they always give dirty looks
Yank in exile February 8th, 2007, 10:38 AM It always shocks me when I see how people in Vancouver insist on keeping a little "space bubble" around them on public transit. I can understand when there aren't many people on a bus/skytrain car, but they need to get over themselves and pack in a bit more.
Perhaps a few hours on a subway or bus in New York or San Francisco will "school" you all a bit. In San Francisco, the bus driver will stand up, take a look back and yell at people to move back more when there is room. He/she will not move the bus until people sardine themselves in so that there's room for more fares. That means you have to be a little more "assertive" to get out the back door at your stop—but you'll probably have company, you know! Just say "going out" or "coming through" or whatever it takes. Have a bit of spine, people!
People here need to stop being to spoiled and the drivers need to stop being so bleeding lazy. Just about the only resemblance the transit system here has to its counterparts in California is the propensity for certain users to converse at a high volume in percussive-sounding dialects.

this driver made this announcement the other day:
"please move to the back"
"the faster you move back, the faster i let passengers in"
"they all want to get home too"
"and the faster they get in, the sooner i can drive"
"the sooner i can drive, the faster you will get home and drink your beer"

So you are saying people should put up with terrible service and a lack of buses? If I had to *really* pack into a bus, I would just drive my car instead. If the transit companies are greedy, they will lose out here in Vancouver greatly...
Huhu February 9th, 2007, 04:14 AM Transit companies aren't greedy, they just lack funding. :ohno:

People have devised all sorts of strategies for keeping the seat beside them unoccupied. I'll stand there with my butt hanging over the guy's wedding cake or toothpick model of the Eiffel Tower or whatever, giving every signal in the world that I'm going to be sitting down so therefore he should pick up the damn prop and put it in his lap, and they still try playing dumb.
"Oh, you wanted to sit here? Because you paid the same fare that I did? It never crossed my mind that someone else would want to sit during the ride!"
That said, the #99 can be absolutely packed. I've been smacked in the face with backpacks, snowboards...no space bubbles in those situations. Every nook and cranny is occupied when the #99 is fully loaded.
Since we're griping, has anybody noticed this recent fad whereby the young guys slouch in the single seats so that their legs extend way into the aisle? Are they pretending to be really tall or something? I'll never understand it. Everybody who gets on the bus ends up stepping on their toes or smacking them in the knees or whatever because they're blocked the bloody aisle. And they never seem to clue in and sit up straight.
spyro February 9th, 2007, 06:18 AM i simply just hate it when people decide to put their wet umbrellas on the seats so that no one can sit there cause its all wet.. i mean come on.. are umbrellas so special that they deserve their very own seat?

These twats have obviously been raised by wolves. Kick them nextime.
This has now turned into the transit whinge thread so speaking of twats, I'm not a big fan of people who crank their headphones so everyone on the bus can hear the shite coming out of them.
dchengg March 14th, 2007, 10:16 AM im getting paranoid about people who dont like up..
like the other day,
i lined up for like 10 minutes,
and then the bus finally came
and we all kinda lined up
and then came along few people, sorry, not to be mean, but i jsut had to mention the word fat,
and they walked to the front of the line, practically budging..
and then the few fat ladies walked in,
and there we go,
bus full,
one of them, is like double my size. and the have huge backpacks that they dont bother taking off.
Overground March 14th, 2007, 08:49 PM one of them, is like double my size. and the have huge backpacks that they dont bother taking off.
That's one that really winds me up. If you're going to have a rucksack take the bloody thing off or pay twice for taking up twice the standing space.

i get whacked in the face quite a few good times
and some that think nothing is wrong
i get pissed sometimes if it touches my hair,
but i can do nothing bout it
nova9 April 1st, 2007, 09:41 PM I've stopped being polite in scenarios like this. I'm usually the one that pushes right through to the back of the bus or willingly knocks their knees that are stuck out. I'm also one of those people that actually enforces a line - I can't believe how many people will line up for 20 minutes for a #44 or a #25 or whatever and still let people cut. I tell those people where to go. Seriously, it's transit, a shared systems, we're past the point of being nice to these dicks.
dchengg April 4th, 2007, 01:55 AM well..
firstly
DRIVERS DONT CARE
if they make an effort to have the drivers to discipline those people
sometimes when im stuck at the front of the bus
and i see lots of room in the back,
i really wana tell the driver to tell people to move back,
but driver cares less,
cuz he only drives.

I could not agree with you more.
