OshHisham February 4th, 2007, 06:06 AM Every year on 1st february, citizens of Kuala Lumpur gather to commemorate their city as the first Federal Territory. Kuala Lumpur went through great changes between the years 1946 and 1969. it was then places like Lebuh Pasar, Petaling Street, Java Street( now Jalan Tun perak), Foch Avenue(now Jalan Cheng Lock) plays a major role as city's business centre.
So, in this thread i will post street scene photos of those places which has gone various changes.

OshHisham February 4th, 2007, 06:10 AM seriously, this area needs a major reservation plan. sadly DBKL tends to build new modern things rather than to preserve olds.

Not only busy in the 1940's, probably since KL was founded. It became the most important commercial centre in the whole of KL. Just imagine the historical worth of the place and the tourism potential, if it was given some degree of attention...

Hey thanks for the pictures and the links. Maybe not as old as other regional cities, but I think KL has an interesting history behind her crowded skyline~ and more about the way it grew from a mining village to the city it is today. :)
The historical areas are quite easily missed by tourists and locals alike, thinking that KL is only skyscrapers and elevated trains. But you can't blame them either, not much about the history is promoted, unlike Penang or Melaka.

No problem, thank you for posting as well.
If you look at the whole of Jalan Tun H. S Lee also known as High Street... the remaining shophouses date to the early 1880s actually. One typical way of spotting very old shophouses is by looking at the current road level, which will be few feet above the shophouse entrance.

Birch Road - Jalan Maharajalela:lol:..i think they want to tell others that malay is so brave to against, fight white, like wat maharajalela did to Birch:D
OshHisham March 1st, 2007, 06:01 AM we've never been told the true reason why maharajalela killed birch....
actually the reason is this....
"Birch's assassination was ultimately due to the fact that he outlawed slavery in Perak but kept women slaves in his home for personal reasons. Dato Maharajalela, whose income depended on capturing and selling the indigenes of Perak or Orang Asli as slaves, was then incensed and plotted with some of the slave-traders to kill Birch by spearing him when he was taking his bath in the river."
it is embarrasing today's politicians potray maharajalela as an Malay HERO for such reason...:ohno:

Actually, Birch on the way to Pasir Salak. Then, his men said that Dato' Maharajalela want to kill him(birch). So, he pretend bathing to make people dont come to him. But DAto' Maharajalela's men kill him at quite distance with javelin or spear (lembing).
This are the real reasons why Dato maharajalela killed J.W.W Birch. (Sorry its in BM). Don't just looked at negative side of Pembasar lama ok.:)
1) cuba menghapuskan sistem perhambaan (you are right oshkoshgood:) )
What we should frm them is patriotism spirit and against coloniser. They sacrifice their self for Malays.:) :) :)

Steadfast: The clock tower was erected in 1937 in
commemoration of the coronation of King George IV.
Old Market Square now known as Medan Pasar was the place to be for traders as there were facilities like banks, textile shops, grocers, and traditional medicinal halls.
It was not only a market but also a gambling haunt that was frequented by the working class.
According to historical texts, the road was also home to many opium dens and brothels.
Headed by Kapitan Yap Ah Loy, the road was known as Macao Street or Hokkien Street by the old Chinese community.
In the late 1800s Yap controlled a large part of the businesses that thrived in the market, building his empire on the many tin mines in Kuala Lumpur.
However, the first resident-general of the Federated Malay States Frank Swettenham demolished the market in 1882, as he was appalled at the conditions of the unkempt wooden huts and stalls.
Yap rebuilt the market place using proper construction materials and resumed his reign until his death in 1885.
The flourishing market was then relocated by Swettenham to a new site, where the current Central Market is, and the old market place was transformed into a new trade square.
Medan Pasar in the modern times is just like many other roads, a picture of tall buildings and refurbished old shop houses.
The three-storey shop houses were built in 1920s after the relocation of the market and now houses cafes, trinket shops, cheap boutiques and mobile phone stalls.
“HSBC building and the clock tower are two landmarks that people often associate this place with,” said Hassan Bula, 65, who works in one of the newsstands along the road.
http://www.thestar.com.my/archives/2007/3/3/central/m_18medanpasar.jpg
Still making a mark: Medan Pasar is now one of
the most important public transport hubs for the city.
The clock tower was erected in 1937 in commemoration of the coronation of King George IV and remains steadfast until today, right in the middle of the road.
“The road has always been a centre for banks. There was Lee Wah Bank building (now United Overseas Bank building), and then Citibank building. I think there was also a merchant bank here a long time ago,” said Hassan.
Although the road no longer plays host to the city’s busiest market, Medan Pasar is still buzzing with activities as it is now one of the main hubs for public transports.
It has long been the main stop for private and public buses where passengers can hop on the next bus to their respective destinations.

during the days of Kapitan Yap. - Photo courtesy of National Archives
The new RapidKL line also enlists Medan Pasar as one of their major city hubs.
“Convenience is one, but the road is often congested because of the amount of buses that pass through here. If you want to drive into this road, be prepared to be stuck for a while,” said Hassan.

argory March 6th, 2007, 04:10 AM Just wondering, why is the copper dome still brown? Copper oxidises to green like Sg's Supreme Court dome... :?
Not too sure, but I think it could be due to the stages of the natural weathering process. Like a 1 sen coin for instance...when it first comes out it is almost pinkish, becomes brown and then blackish-grey and if it survives, a greenish layer starts to form. So it could be that the cleaning of the domes frequently maintains the colour. In some old pictures of the SAS building, the domes appear very bright and shiny and in others they are almost black...
It could also be the materials factor and method used (like chemicals used to delay oxidation), which brings us to another interesting topic on old buildings. :D I think copper has interesting colours, remember bright blue copper sulfate crystals in the school lab?
argory March 6th, 2007, 04:21 AM never been there, so..when Sultan Abdul Samad building converted into a...let say... museum, does it sounds boring...to have museum this and museum that in a same area?
I think the idea of making that place into a museum and gallery zone was a long time proposal... From Dataran Merdeka to the Railway station area until the National Museum. So you would find a row of museums and galleries. That’s why the Majestic Hotel served as the National Art Gallery for some time. Now KL railway station also has the potential as a Railway Museum and once the courts move out of SAS building, the idea might actually work. :)
I think having museums in one area is good... admittedly not many people are into history and would not make the effort to go halfway around town to visit all of them if they were scattered ;)

I used to frequent the shophouse with the flagpole a long time ago :D Used to tuition there during primary school. It is hell for me hahaha......used to hate going there. That is because it is like a torture chamber more than a tuition place. They used all sorts of methods to discipline students :D

I believe these are rowhouses rather than shophouses, like the ones in the Heritage Row area. It was compulsory in colonial times (and probably still is) to build shophouses with five-foot ways.

argory March 25th, 2007, 03:16 PM Why houses on those days have hollow part on the wall? Ventilation?
Yeah for ventilation... I think many houses in PJ and other old housing estates still have them but they pose a problem with mosquitoes which is why it needs to be fitted with netting. Some have cemented them up completely for aesthetic reasons. ;)
James Foong March 25th, 2007, 03:35 PM Yes, i hv it in my old house but never bother to know it then. Looking back, i think older house is much more ventilated than todays house. Modern house seems to be like a refrigerator..grilled, fully enclosed and mostly air conditioned..leaving all the germs trapped in it.
OshHisham March 25th, 2007, 05:05 PM ^^ nope..not really. it depends on how smart the architect is....in fact, modern houses have a better natural ventilation and sun shader:yes:
the problem now is...developers simply want to make money by employing a low quality/budget design&construction materials...:ohno:

James Foong March 27th, 2007, 06:35 PM I dont like their newly laid roof tiles. It doesn't look solid as the brickwall.
Pablo March 28th, 2007, 02:29 AM ^^ ya that is true...i find that most of the heritage buildings which has been refurnished come to this problem, the roof tiles...it is like very brand new:D...but maybe after a few years, when the roof tiles become darker and dirtier and it will match the building
argory March 28th, 2007, 02:57 AM yep, the roof looks a bit off - I think the reason is because the tiles used in those days were made of clay (terracota), whereas now its mostly concrete (cement) based.... Even the size, design and grooves of each roof tile are totally different.
It would be very expensive to have terracota roof tiles I think.
TYW March 28th, 2007, 07:39 AM hmm.. if you didn't mention Asian Heritage Row, i might think that is a new building.

argory August 3rd, 2008, 02:36 PM For those who don’t know, there was a cable-car system implemented in the early 1970s up to about somewhere in the 80s. To be honest, I was probably not even born during the period or too young to know and not much information is actually available on the internet.
Today, I purchased an interesting not-so-old postcard of KL showing cable-cars at Bukit Nanas. It says that it was a mix of alternating “bubble-cars” and “cable-chairs”. Would anyone of you here remember where the cables went or how it actually worked? Among the vague reasons for its discontinuation appears to be because the “initial enthusiasm died out” – which appears to be valid in most rides like this.
However, could there be a different potential of the cable-car since KL Tower became the star attraction of Bukit Nanas? It may provide a means of getting up to the tower especially if it is connected to existing LRT/ monorail stations and it could improve the overall tourist experience in KL. But there could be negative implications if the project barged into the environment of Bukit Nanas forest reserve and if the cables distract the city skyline or if it is completely unfeasible to rebuild.
So, could it be revived?
Some pictures
I posted this before – I think this is the “Bubble-Car” part.

we can't bear further land clearing around Bukit Nenas since the precious hill already lost its green part to give way for KL Tower construction....
and if we want this cable car...then, more green will get cut...
argory August 11th, 2008, 04:12 AM ^^Yup, that is probably the most important concern...
There was talk some years back about reviving the Batu Caves funicular train or build some cable-car thing. No idea what happened to that too...

I think this might be the second railway station (the site of the current Old KL Station). The 1st station (near Selangor Club) is said to been a humble structure with a thatched-roof.
Also, if that was the station near the Selangor club, my guess is that you would have been able to see bits of Bukit Aman (Bluff Hill) at the back. ;)

HangPC2 October 23rd, 2008, 08:11 AM Mercu tanda Kuala Lumpur terbakar
Oleh Mohd Azis Ngah
http://img402.imageshack.us/img402/6113/1973komplekscampbellto4.jpg
http://img404.imageshack.us/img404/7526/1973komplekscampbell02bk5.jpg
http://img212.imageshack.us/img212/9130/1973komplekscampbell03ii7.jpg
KEADAAN bangunan 20 tingkat sehari selepas kebakaran.
Pengawal keselamatan bersama seorang lagi rakannya cuba memadam kebakaran awal menggunakan alat pemadam api tetapi gagal kerana api marak terlalu cepat.
“Ia menggerunkan kerana itulah pengalaman pertama menyaksikan kebakaran begitu besar.
Kronologi kejadian:
# 10 pagi - api mula reda
# 12.30 tengah hari - asap tebal tiba-tiba kelihatan di tingkat 16, 17, 18
# 1.30 tengah hari - hujan renyai
# 2.30 petang - bomba menghentikan operasi memadam kerana api terlalu besar

rizalhakim November 11th, 2008, 09:52 AM Mercu tanda Kuala Lumpur terbakar
Oleh Mohd Azis Ngah
http://img402.imageshack.us/img402/6113/1973komplekscampbellto4.jpg
http://img404.imageshack.us/img404/7526/1973komplekscampbell02bk5.jpg
http://img212.imageshack.us/img212/9130/1973komplekscampbell03ii7.jpg
KEADAAN bangunan 20 tingkat sehari selepas kebakaran.
Pengawal keselamatan bersama seorang lagi rakannya cuba memadam kebakaran awal menggunakan alat pemadam api tetapi gagal kerana api marak terlalu cepat.
“Ia menggerunkan kerana itulah pengalaman pertama menyaksikan kebakaran begitu besar.
Kronologi kejadian:
# 10 pagi - api mula reda
# 12.30 tengah hari - asap tebal tiba-tiba kelihatan di tingkat 16, 17, 18
# 1.30 tengah hari - hujan renyai
# 2.30 petang - bomba menghentikan operasi memadam kerana api terlalu besar

KL Sentral (Brickfields Yard) is not in the picture – the picture shows Petaling Street area actually with the Railway Station and Offices at the top left. I think it should be pre-WW2, perhaps around 1930.
Apart from the fact that most of the shophouses have been built over with something taller, there are some noticeable features that have changed or don’t exist anymore:
1. Foch Avenue (Jalan Cheng Lock) with Sultan Street Railway Terminus.
2. Cenotaph at Victory Avenue near the railway station
3. Shophouses opposite Central Market (Mc Arthur Street)
4. Venning Road Chapel
5. The Klang River has not been straightened yet at the old Victoria Institution.
6. Survey Department Building (centre, top)
7. Central Market appears to have not been rebuilt into its present Art-Deco style.

I can't avoid noticing but from these photos i can see that KL has already been a car-oriented society even way back then. Only a few people ride bicycles and many cars can already be seen roaming around the city.. :) This is different from other asian cities where people normally started using bicycles and only started buying more cars during the late 70s..

I think you're right - it is the Royale Bintang Hotel. I did go to all those places you mentioned with my parents- Weld swimming pool, the old Weld Supermarket and the Bukit Nanas cable car in the 1970s when I was still a little kid. It will be nice if someone could post photos of these places on the forum for old times' sake .........

sc4, I would agree to the 1st part of your statement that KL looks nice back then (except for the yet-to-be-straightened part of Klang River at the Old Victoria Institution -makes KL much more prone to floods) but for your 2nd part of the statement - I beg to differ - I would love KL the way it is today - we have successfully control the floods at the heart of the city by constructing the SMART Tunnel. how do you know it is 'boring'? imagine if Melaka or georgetown has no more old shophouses. does it gonna be 'exciting'? in fact, the old feeling gives them character and 'sense of place'. and that what makes people adore european so much than the ultramodern Dubai or Shanghai.
singapore is dying, trying to protect the remaining they have. and they do it perfectly!

keeping heritage building intact is our responsibility, while filling it with activities in order for it to survive (in exciting way) is another thing.
Singapore without following stringent requirement from conservationist experts (UNESCO etc) can revive their remaining old enclave and becoming center of attraction. day and night.

Central Market was the largest wet market in Kuala Lumpur. It was a grimy, slippery, noisy and smelly place strewn with chicken feathers, fish scales, rotting vegetables and fruits underfoot. Built in 1936 to replace the wholesale market located in Medan Pasar, then one of the main shopping centres. The building has won awards for its architectural design. It was shut down and renovated in 1985 & re-opened in 1986 as an arts and culture market (Pasar Seni), a lively setting for craftsmen and artists .....

idiamindada December 12th, 2010, 07:16 PM some British officials who had contributed to KL development should be credited. Swettenham, AC Norman+AB Hubback (architects) are all should be put in road names. takkanlah sebab penjajah dah sampai nak padamkan jasa jasa mereka?
nak tanya lah jugak, apa jasa Hang Tuah, Hang Jebat pada KL sampai nak letak nama mereka pada jalan raya di KL?

but u know what, chinese society actually don't really care about old buildings. given them choice, they will destroy it and make another 'profitable' buildings. just look at Hong Kong. in HK, owners are dying to demolish their old and historical properties to build higher buildings. they even protest HK's new law on heritage prevention.
same in penang and melaka. it's actually government intervention who saved that.

sometimes, there are names of those contributed much for KL early days. like Swettenham Road, Maxwell Road, Henry Gurney Road, these are the names who were prominent in our history too.
instead of Hang Tuah, Hang Jebat and Tun Perak who has nothing to do in KL and they didn't even know what KL is!
