The traditional dress for men is called djellaba; a long, loose, hooded garment with full sleeves. For special occasions, men also wear a red cap called tarbouche and mostly referred to as Fez. Nearly all men wear baboosh—those soft leather slippers with no heel, often in yellow. Many women do as well but others wear high-heeled sandals, often in silver or gold tinsel.

The distinction is the djellabas has a hood, while a Kaftan does not. The women’s djellabas are mostly of bright colors with ornate patterns, stitching, or beading, while men wear djellabas in plainer, neutral colors. Women are strongly attached to their "Moroccan wardrobe", despite the financial costs involved. The production of such garments is relatively expensive, as most of the work is done by hand. Despite the costs involved most women purchase a minimum of one new kaftan or "tk`chita" every year, normally for a special, social event, such as a religious festival or a wedding. Nowadays, it is an unwritten rule that Moroccan dress is worn at such events.

Terbouch or Fêz

The fez originated in Fez, Morocco and was popularized in the Ottoman Empire and Western world in the 19th century. Its use has subsequently become less widespread.

I think Saudi Arabia has the best clothes. Just cover up in black for women and there you go!

How come there is not a lot of variety in the clothes? I mean I find it hard to believe that all throughout history of Gulf area, women were obliged to dress up in a specific way. I understand that there is a climatic argument, that traditionally pushed the population to dress up in a specific way. But personally I believe that it is mainly due to the enclosed history of the population. It was traditionally isolated and did not interact with other cultures... that is why they can not innovate and borrow from others...

Iranian clothes: I can tell a lot of Central Asian influence, such as the Azeris, Armenian and other such minorities.

Marriage: I think that it is interesting to analyze what types of clothes MENA populations wear during marriage. I think that in Morocco a bride changes clothes multiple times in the same wedding night to represent the diversity of Moroccan clothes... I wonder why this is the case?

Azeris and Armenians are from Caucus not Central Asia... But yes, Iranian's route is in Central Asia therefore you will see similarities between Tajik, Afghani etc dress with Iran's and visa versa

throught out all saudi history women wore these traditional clothings and still now except some wear modern clothing but they always were a black abaya when they went outside. And women really dress the way then want! infact lets go back to morocco 60-80 years ago and see what they wore... those colored burqas with a white thing infront of their mouth. Not just in morocco and saudi but everywhere in the arabic world women wore black abayas when they were outside of home except if they were in a village or bedouins in their areas since they are all family members.

I object to the title, what do you mean COSTUMES!!! there are their traditional "fashion", they do not wear these cloths to perform a play!!

^that's just 1 meaning of the word costume (though when I hear the word costume I too think of sth. worn to perform a play or to a themed party or sth.)

1. a style of dress, including accessories and hairdos, esp. that peculiar to a nation, region, group, or historical period.
2. dress or garb characteristic of another period, place, person, etc., as worn on the stage or at balls.
3. fashion of dress appropriate to a particular occasion or season: dancing costume; winter costume.
4. a set of garments, esp. women's garments, selected for wear at a single time; outfit; ensemble.

Cool, those clothes look very Ottoman (and very much like in some parts of Turkey used to look).

gamayun

It is Ottoman, of course.

However, that style was popular only in cities and was the same for Bosniaks, Sebs and Croats.

Countryside clothes is completely different. It's made of rough, simple and usually white linen and Slavic influence is visible. Plus, every religious group had it's own, unique style.

Turkonology, women dress look like Bosnian.... :)

Btw. Bosnian Croat ladies. Right one is city dress, and the left one is countryside.

Bosniaks from Sandzak region (Plav i Gusinje) in Montenegro. They are Slavic speaking Muslims and are technically Bosniaks, though their culture is clearly Albanian. Only link to us is the language and, to some extent, it differs from the one spoken in Bosnia.

Bosniaks, Sarajevan style. IMHO, the most beautiful one. It's quite interesting to see how similar it is to Moroccan traditional costumes.

What is the meaning with the psedo-mustache? Is that a ceremonial thing or everyday wear?

it was very common and an everyday wear for adult females long ago, and used to cover up some of woman's face in public places.

now some women wear it specially in rural areas and the bedouin women also.

Maha

^^ Someone told me that originally it was worn under the veil that covered the face in order for the veil not to stick to the eyes and mouth; then they stopped putting the veil on the face and kept it.
