I live in the Wshington D.C. area in the U.S., and the biggest arena in my area which happens to also be one of the largest in the U.S. is the MCI center built in 1997.

It is situated in "Chinatown" in Washington D.C. It is home to the Washington Wizards(Basketball), Washington Capitals(Ice Hockey), and the Georgetown Hoyas(College Basketball).

Australia doesn't really have any arenas. We have plenty of stadiums, but not may arenas. From the way I interpret this thread, I would think that you are talking about hockey arenas and we don't play hockey. We prefer our three codes of football. Australian Rules, Rugby League and Rugby Union.

Could someone define "arena" and "stadium" for me? Here an "arena" is something at the Royal Agricultural Show, for animals to be led around & admired, while the "stadium" was somewhere where boxing matches and pop concerts were held (until it was renamed).

If you're going to distinguish between these two categories of building, I for one need a precise definition.

Well , we have something bigger than the "Rod Laver" : does it all come down to whether the roof is permanently closed or not? Does it ever get to 45 celsius in the shade in the UK ? Do vents in the roof mean that it's no longer "an arena" ?

It might be once or twice in a year, but it's no joke mate, and you don't go out sunbathing in it ...

"arena" means something totally different here. I Have an "arena" of my own, but it has no roof whatever! By your definition, the former Olympic swimming pool here would be the largest arena, but that's because larger venues have roofs that open ... & I really can't see why that makes a fundamental difference.

I thought you were mainly refering to hockey arenas. We do have 'arenas' as such, but we don't call them arenas. They're just Convention & Exhibition Centres(p.s. Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre opens TONIGHT!!!) and Entertainment Centres. Capacities usually 6,000-17,000. We don't have many 'sports arenas'. Just Rod Laver, Vodafone. The rest are all Entertainment Centres.

Factsheet 3 – The NEC Arena
• The NEC Arena opened in 1980, one of the first large-scale concert
venues in the country. Queen was the first act.
• The 12,500-seat arena has staged over 1,400 concerts attracting more
than 14 million people since opening.
• The NEC Arena has always been at the forefront of what has become a
fast-growing industry. Other cities to have followed The NEC’s lead
include Manchester, Sheffield, Newcastle and London (Docklands).
• The arena was originally conceived to diversify The NEC’s business, which
until 1980 had mainly staged trade exhibitions.
• The arena has become something of a national institution, even achieving
mentions on Coronation Street and Brookside.
• The arena has played host to many of the world’s top performers including
Shirley Bassey, Whitney Houston, Tina Turner, Elton John, Barry Manilow,
Diana Ross, Janet Jackson and bands such as Take That, the Spice Girls
and S Club 7. The venue features on the UK tour schedules of most major
artists.
• The NEC Arena has twice been voted Best UK Concert venue by readers
of Music Week magazine.
• Major sporting events are also staged at the arena such as the 1993 World
Gymnastics Championships and the 1995 World Figure Skating
Championships.
• The arena can also hold large-scale conventions and business events, such
as the Lions Clubs International Convention and the Womens’ Institute
National Conference.
• The Box Office is one of the largest and most sophisticated in-house ticket
selling operations in Britain, selling more than one million tickets each
year.
• The NEC Arena operates in conjunction with its sister venue in Birmingham
city centre, The NIA. Managing two major arenas gives The NEC Group
greater flexibility in meeting the needs of event organisers.

arena: indoors perm roof..imagine kylie concerts (and no the rod laver doesnt count)
stadium: no roof or at least no perm roof..imagine open air sports

Why can't Rod Laver count? For most of the year, the roof is closed (it only opens for tennis, which is a few months around summer), and the surface is concrete (again, the grass is there only for the tennis). It is used to host concerts. The nearby Vodafone arena is not built only for tennis, but it is also a velodrome, basketball venue and concert venue.

A retractable roof isn't much criteria for both of them when most of the year the roof stays shut and the ground certainly is concrete or wood.

With Melbourne being her hometown, Rod Laver is probably the home for Kylie concerts.

I'll take photos of the two when I'll be there in about a months time.

lol, the ground at cardiffs millenium stadium is concrete and the roof is shut for nearly all the matches there, but a concrete floor and a closed roof doesnt make it an arena, otherwise it would beat the shit out of everything else at 73,000 capacity

But Rod Laver and Vodafone are of a similar size and proportion to the other arenas mentioned here. An opening roof should not automatically disqualify a building from being an arena, as you are insisting. The criteria for the classification of arena goes down to its purpose (not design), and that way, if Melbourne's two arenas are actually stadiums, then all of the other arenas pictured here are also stadiums.

Otherwise Telstra Dome here would also beat most of the other arenas here. But it too is called a stadium because of the size of the field and that it is used to play football and cricket (although it has hosted boxing and concerts before - IMO it's too big for these events).

JTS LOU where have you been The Charlotte Hornets moved to New Orleans 2 years ago instead of Louisville or Norfolk and Charlotte is getting a new team (Bobcats) and arena in 2005. I highly doubt a city the size of Louisville was going to build a 30,000 seat arena. The NBA is downscaling new arenas anyways and including more luxury suits. The average seating in new arenas in the NBA is about 18,000.

If I'm not mistaken I think the Charlotte Coliseum is the largest Arena in the US although I could be wrong. It has a capacity of over 24,000. Sadly the arena will not be used after 2005 when the new downtown Arena for the Bobcats and Sting will open. I'm sure the city will tear it down and build another office park on its site. The arena isn't much of an architectual marvel but it gets the job done. I think I'm going to miss it when its gone. So many important events for Charlotte have taken place there.

As far as i know, in Kiev, capital of Ukraine, we have 2 or 3 such objects. But we don't call them "Arena".
One from them is situated in the centre of the city, it calls "Palats Sportu" (it means Sport's Palace).
Two other objects were build during one year and finished in spring of 2003. One from them is called "Expoplaza" (4 big blocks), and another - Inetrnational Exhibition Center (situated in the Livoberezzhia District). In this objects many international exhibitions are taken place in Kiev. As far as i know, the final concert of "Eurovision" (May 2005) would be going on in the "Palats Sportu".

Yes, you are right - my English is terrible...

well an arena is a place were hockey is played, basket ball, concerts and is all indoors, i stadium is for sports with a bigger playing feild like football/soccer and is mostly open roofed out doors, i would consider a big arena to have around 15,000 seats.
OK, I understand what you are looking for but an arena refers to a certain shape, a midfield with seats in an oval around it. An arena has no corners and that's different from a stadium.
Anyway, The Netherlands has The Arena (great name, hey?) in Amsterdam which is the Ajax stadium ànd a hall at the same time, capacity 55.000 with sport events. A little less when arena rawk bands play there. In Arnhem, there's the Gelredome (cap 31,000) which has a removable pitch! So after a Vitesse home game, the pitch rolls out and a floor is built for a Madonna concert. Convertible roof. Far from cute. www.gelredome.nl for the Flash website. A lot of matches have been played 'indoors' as it were and away teams have complained about it. It was a world's first however.
The world's #1 DJ Tiësto played the Gelredome. Forgot whether it was the biggest DJ gig in the NL or the world.

wow, was the koln arena built specifically for handball?

No, it was not. They came up with the idea of playing hanball games there only 3 years ago. Cologne Arena was build for concerts, ice-hockey (multi-use).
But Handball is in deed very popular here. There are teams in Hamburgs Colour Line Arena (13.000), Ostseehalle in Kiel (10.050), Bördelandhalle in Magdeburg (8000). Next season they´ll play in Hannover´s Preussag Arena (11.000). And finally on September 12th there will be a Handballgame in the Arena Auf Schalke (WC Venues). They expect 35.000 spectators.

Well, we do not have many arenas for smaller sports like hockey or basketball. we have lots of stadiums for other sport like AFL, rugby and cricket.

Rod Laver Arena.

he 16,000 seat arena was well known world-wide from the day it was built as a high-tech venue due to its retractable roof. The roof can be closed in 15-20 minutes. Rod Laver Arena plays host to Australian Open Tennis, Basketball, Concerts, Conventions, and has also held several motocross events.

Location Melbourne, Victoria
Capacity 16,000
Seats 16,000 (100% of capacity)
Sports Played Tennis
Basketball

Vodafone Arena.
http://www.austadiums.com/stadiums/photos/vodafone1.jpg
http://www.austadiums.com/stadiums/photos/vodafone2.jpg
Location Melbourne, Victoria
Capacity 10,800
Seats 10,800 (100% of capacity)

Revolutionary in its design, Vodafone Arena can be readily changed for almost any event - from ice skating to opera, from cycling to basketball. As well as being the home of Victorian Cycling, it is also home of Victorian Basketball.
Versatile building, efficiently re-configurable at low cost with rapid turnaround time Retractable roof (10 minute duration to fully open or close).
also fully Airconditioned =D

so yeah 3 of Melbourne, Australias arenas, well they are all named arena...
just wait till 2006 for the Commonwealth games to be played here, then you will see all the sporting facilitys.

I don't remenber exactly, but if your are speaking about the arena at the end of the film, I think it's rather the "Zenith" (built in 1983, 6400 seats) :

Needs moving up the list: From the Offical MEN Arena website:

The venue's versatility has meant that it can be transformed from an intimate theatre environment for 4,500 to a state-of-the-art arena capable of accommodating 21,000.

Cltsouthsider if Lexington can support a arena of around 24,000, Louisville can support an arena that size also. Basketball is huge in Kentucky so larger arenas are possible. I dont know of many cities Lexingon's size with such a large arena. I believe the talk is now that U of L would be housed in the new arena downtown (if it is built).

@Hobodog: So what? The Düsseldorf LTU-Arena has this movable roof, as you can see on one photo in my previous post. The whole inside can be heatet up to 15°C when the roof is closed, there are rock concerts taking place, too. Or are we talking about arenas that must be unable to open their roofs?

For fucks sake, its a stadium, not an arena, just like the Millenium Stadium!!!!
Whats the point in comparing arenas that at most can hold 25000-30000 to stadiums that can close their roofs and hold 70000+

earthJoker

Because arenas and stadiums are the same in other countries. Because no-one ever provided a reasonable definition of stadion and arena in this thread.

I think one should provide rather good arguments instead of using the f word.

Here is the biggest indoor arena/stadion in Switzerland

It's called Hallenstadion Stadion is the German word for Stadium.

It has place for 12'000 persons.

http://www.sengers.ch/izueri/hallenstadion/334-3426_IMG.jpg

http://www.visualisierung.ch/beispiele/hallenstadion/bild_01.jpg

It's used for Ice-Hockey and Concerts. I think this thread is a bit useless with it's definition.

Yes, but I think the distinction for the purpose of this thread should be that an arena is a building with tiers of seating around a small playing area which can accommodate ice hockey, basketball, tennis etc., but is too small for a football pitch.

The most used Arena in Britain

The NIA

The £51 million National Indoor Arena was opened on October 4 1991, by Olympic gold medalist Linford Christie. The multi-purpose arena can stage more than 30 different types of indoor sport as well as concerts, entertainment spectaculars and business events. The arena is a centre for international sport, having staged World Championships in netball, badminton, powerlifting, archery, climbing and tae-kwondo.

The arena can seat up to a maximum of 13,000, but flexible seating allows the layout to be adapted to virtually any size.

The National Indoor Arena is one of the most sought after, and therefore busiest, large scale indoor sporting and entertainment venues in Europe. Since opening in 1991, over 4 million visitors have enjoyed over 30 different sports and an extensive variety of entertainment and music.

Located in Birmingham City centre, close to The ICC, The NIA brings world class sport to the heart of the nation. From club and regional, to national and international, it provides a perfect home for indoor sport at every level. With a passion for performance, and a will to succeed matching the world-class competitors it regularly welcomes.

There are few people whose lives will not have been enriched by the feats of international sportsmen. And the chances are, these heroes will have plied their trade at The NIA. Think of the sweat-soaked palms and brows at Davis Cup Tennis; the strength and power on display at The IAAF Grand Prix; world-class events in sports such as badminton, table tennis and judo as well as powerlifting, basketball and wrestling.

Stamina, exertion and toil successfully brought to the big stage – the result of calm, detailed planning and thought. The events are supported by media and medical facilities, physiotherapy areas, TV lighting and even an integral underground warm up area.

The NIA and its team have forged a reputation for embracing sport at grassroot level, building a relationship and rapport with Governing Bodies which has helped bring World and European Championships under our roof in Birmingham,

And it’s not just about sport. Concerts, entertainment and business conferences and exhibitions are also staged at The NIA. Take the glamour of The Eurovision Song Contest, the spectacular Disney on Ice, the childrens’ favourite Tweenies Live! and the operatic passion of Carmen and Madam Butterfly as examples of the arena’s versatility. Not to mention concerts by Paul McCartney, Oasis, Coldplay, Russell Watson and Destiny’s Child.

The NIA Academy makes use of the arena’s built-in flexibility, creating a more intimate theatre-style auditorium for up to 4,500. It was the setting for the world premiere of Sir Cliff Richard's production of Heathcliff and has also staged numerous concerts and comedy shows. The flexible format of The NIA Academy allows the audience seating area to be adapted to accommodate concerts, intimate ballet as well as comedy and theatre spectacle.

P.S It recently held the World Indoor Athletic Championships in 2003 and will host once again the European Indoor Championships in 2007 - over 11 World records have been broken on the track since it opened. A feat un-matched anywhere in the indoor world - To be truthfull, Ive never actually been but I probably should. :)

PALAIS OMNISPORT (FRA) ?

The biggest Arenas in the world....The UK appears once....at number 14....Soon to have another at Number 1 :D

LegEnd
March 29th, 2005, 08:12 PM
Chelsea is very restricted in it's site and as we saw with wimbledon its virtually impossible to build a new ground in London, mind you, with abramovich they may be able to build something out of the ordinary.

As for 'THE DOME', capacity of that size isnt needed in the UK really, but its worth it to have the biggest indoor arena in the world. I didnt realise until today that you could fit a full size athletics track inside it....

eddyk
March 29th, 2005, 08:40 PM
Its weired though....a City on Nearly 12,000,000 and the Biggest Arena is only a 12,500 capacity....A new arena is dearly needed....Its London for christs sake....only the best will do!

I mean you try and get tickets for major events at Wembley arena...12,500 seats...they go very fast!

I think larger capacitys would only help our sport!

I would also help our Ice Hockey and Basketball teams!

The London knights are not playing this season as the Wembley Arena is being refurbished......It says on their official site they are looking forward to moving into the 'Dome Arena' as soon as possible!

P.S
Anschutz Entertainment are making the Arena (same who did the staples centre in LA)...and some sites say Doors will open in 2007...and is expected to host at least 150 events a year...so you see....it wont go to waste!

Why does the MEN Arena appear twice in that list?

eddyk
March 30th, 2005, 12:00 AM
I copied the list....to show Citrus-Fruit the arenas....then Looked to see the MEN Arena....Knowing it has a capacity of 21,000 when i looked there and didnt see it i added it myself....I thougt it must be an out of date list....the MEN arena is only 3 years old!
I think that list is based of fitted seats...theres another list on here (this thread) on total capacity...and the MEN arena is 14th...i just found this list first!

The MEN has 17.245 seats in ice hockey formation but more for basketball (around 19,000 I think) and then upto 21,000 for boxing where there are obviously a lot of extra seats ontop of the ice pad.

Its weired though....a City on Nearly 12,000,000 and the Biggest Arena is only a 12,500 capacity....A new arena is dearly needed....Its London for christs sake....only the best will do!
The London knights are not playing this season as the Wembley Arena is being refurbished......It says on their official site they are looking forward to moving into the 'Dome Arena' as soon as possible!

London is a joke for indoor arenas. The london knights played at the Docklands arena, recently refurbished and perfectly adequate for the job. What happened to that?? Sold for housing. No committment to sports IMO in London. I think that will play against them in the final reckoning for the olympics

PALAIS OMNISPORT (FRA) ?

WTF? The MEN Arena in Manchester has a capacity of 21,500.

http://www.men-arena.com/aboutus/

The venue's versatility has meant that it can be transformed from an intimate theatre environment for 3,000 to a state-of-the-art arena capable of accommodating 21,000.

Also from the same page, the MEN was the world's busiest concert venue in 2003 and 2004:

For each of the past four years (2001-2004), the Manchester Evening News Arena has been nominated 'International Venue of the Year' in the Pollstar concert industry awards. In 2003 and 2004, it achieved recognition as 'Busiest Arena Venue In The World' based on concert ticket sales, beating all other European and American indoor venues.

please remember that the total capacity of most arenas which is given on their websites is for concerts with standing area on floor.

one must realise that official numbers dont show the amount of fixed seating.

Well, you can't say for sure while it is U/C. But now when it is being finished, it'll have a capacity of 19.892. It is official number of fixed seats ;) in the Arena. Anounced on Eurobasket press conference, wich is very important cause of the ticket selling system.

There were so many stories about it in the past, cause the construction started in 1989. for Worldbasket 1994. But when the war broke out in ex-yu and after UN embargo the works stoped. Construction was continiued in 1997. for table-tennis championship, but cause of the NATO bombing it was stopped, again. Anyway Arena wasn't even near the completition. In 2000, before the "crucial" election certain wicked guy S.M. and his (National) Socialist Party have opened the unfinished Arena - one of the most pathetic moves of the mentioned guy. It hadn't any seats at the time, of course, but they had to mention the capacity, so they've said 20.000+.

In 1960-63, the Coliseum received international recognition as the "Biggest covered coliseum in the world". Even today, it still remains as one of the largest clear span dome in the world and the largest indoor facility in Southeast Asia with a dome diameter of one hundred and eight (108) meters. It occupies a total land area of almost four (4) hectares and has twenty-three hundred (2,300) square meter floor area.

Sydney Superdome

Maybe not the largest but recently voted of the best.

SYDNEY, Australia, 22 March 2006 – Acer Computer Australia today announced a five-year sponsorship agreement with PBL resulting in the Sydney SuperDome’s first-ever naming rights deal that will see it re-branded as Acer Arena. The sponsorship is made possible with the support of Intel® Viiv™ technology. Billed as Australia’s number one indoor entertainment venue and number two worldwide, just behind Madison Square Garden, the entertainment centre will take on its new identity from 12 May 2006, spearheading Acer’s drive to become Australia’s number one consumer technology brand.

US music magazine Billboard has acknowledged the success of the Sydney SuperDome in its 2005 end of year concert touring publication. The end of year edition stated that “ the Sydney SuperDome is one of the top grossing arenas in the world this year”.

The Sydney SuperDome posted US$37.6 million gross ticket revenue behind Madison Square Garden’s enormous US$75.2 million. Just edging out California’s Arrowhead Pond Arena in Anaheim in third place with US$35.9 million, the article confirmed the Sydney SuperDome’s position currently as the second most successful indoor arena in the world for 2005.

The North Koreans have the largest arena/stadium in the world that seats 150,000 in Pyongyang. Whilst not enclosed, it may not necessarily be classed as an arena, but then what is? I am pretty sure that it has the largest capacity in the world whilst Melbourne's M.C.G. (http://www.mcg.org.au) has the largest footprint and total floorspace of any stadium.

Wrong. Rupp Arena on the University of Kentucky has a capacity of 24,000. Looks to be the largest in the USA, and likely all of NA ... but thats with limited research.

Many college arenas have comperable or higher capacity than most NBA arenas. Staples, United, and MSG arent THAT big when you consider the The Dean Dome on U. of North Carolina, The Erwin Center on the campus of the University of Texas, et al are as big or bigger

? ? ? ? ? ?

Then I suppose you can pick any large roofed stadium in the USA where they play baseball, there must be a lot of them I imagine that seat between 40-75,000. Technically speaking by your definition Telstra Dome in Melbourne (Not the greatest in terms of capacity by any stretch of the imagination) would qualify as an arena as would the Millenium Stadium in Cardiff which seats 70-80,000???? They both have fully retractable roofs and sport can be played in them (with the roof opened or closed, makes no difference) as well as the staging of rock concerts, wrestling etc.

If you think of the discussion in those terms then the field is opened considerably, and it becomes even more interesting when you consider that many cities are now adopting retractable roofs onto new stadiums as they deliver great flexibility.

for many decades the European biggest arena was the PalaFiera in Milan, built at the end of 40's with a capacity of 19.000 people.
it was homegrown of Olimpia Milano during the 50's and the first half of the 60's.
then, i don't know why, it was abandoned.
it still exists as building but i think that is completely closed from more tha 40 years.
it will be part of the Fiera Renovation and it will became a big interior garden for children and a museum.

Does anyone know a last which is the biggest now?

I guess the one in russia that holds 25,000, and soon to be the one at the mellineum dome.

I know in north america the biggest are rupp arena in lexington, KY (23,000), the palace at auburn hills in Auburn Hills, Mi (22,076), the Charlotte Colisuem in Charlotte, NC (24,042), the Greensboro Coliseum in Greensboro, NC (23,500). These are the official capacities listed on Wikipedia for the arena's most common use (usually basketball). Some seat more for concerts and places like Rupp have been able to cram extras (up to 24,000) for important basketball games.

I consider an arena a venue used solely for indoor sports. Football (any version other than the indoor variants), baseball, cricket, and stuff like that should not be hosted.

This is kind of misleading because the US's most important arena events, like the NCAA championships are held inside football arenas. So building basketball-specific arenas larger than 25,000 is risky and pointless. Its more likely for a city to build a football arena that can be converted into a basketball arena for the final four, much like Indy's new stadium, Phoenix
Cardinal's new stadium, New Dallas Cowboy's Stadium(?), The Superdome in New Orleans, Houston's Reliant Stadium, San Antonio's Alamodome, etc

Brent H.
April 10th, 2006, 11:05 PM
Yea, without the possibility of the final four and other such events I know Charlotte is going to demolish the coliseum. They built the Charlotte Bobcats Arena which is in downtown Charlotte, and it has more luxury suites but a smaller capacity. Only 19,000 (expandable up to 20,000) compared to 24,000 at the Coliseum.

In Scotland our largest indoor arena is the SECC in Glasgow.

The facility comprises of four arenas which are used for a variety of purposes from conferences and trade shows to pop concerts. The smallest arena on the site (Hall 2) has a seating capacity of 2,500, while the largest (Hall 4) can accommodate up to 10,000 people.

Recently the owners of the complex announced extensive development plans for the land around the SECC. These include plans for a new 12,500 capcacity arena dedicated for entertainment, a casino/hotel complex as well as numerous aparments and offices.

A stop on the proposed Clydeside tram may also be built should that project be approved by the local authority.

This building at the SECC is unofficially know as the “Armadillo”

I wouldn't be surprised if most didn't though. Judging from the setup at Rod Laver Arena, a large section of seating with a poor view of the stage (everything behind or directly beside the stage) is closed off.

Vodafone Arena is slightly different because it has retractable seating (which retracts upwards) so the stage just replaces one of the ends.

Here is a picture of me enjoying a suite in HSBC Arena (Sabres vs. Bruins, I think it was 2003 or 2004, Sabres lost 2-1 :( ) The clock shows 38:30 until the game starts, and the beer is free, so that's probably why I can't remember what year it was :)

There is another, but I can't remember it.

These capacity number should be taken with a big grain of salt they don´t say anything about standard of the arena. College arenas rarelly have separate seats in stead they have benches with numbers on them. Some arenas do have more upscale sections with single seats. In general they don´t come close to those in NBA/NHL.

Yeah that's true, Rod Laver is one that may not hold more.

@Wezza
what happend to acer arena.
it had a capacity of 21.000 during the olympics
I'm not sure, i thought the same thing. On austadiums.com, they have 21,000 capactiy for concerts. Maybe it'wrong. I thought it was still that figure for basketball. I'll have to look into that.

On another note, there is talk of increasing the capacity of Rod Laver Arena to eventually seat 23,000. I think it's a long term project though.

Really? Why?

Or the Philips Arena (I'm a thrashers fan myself) :P

I like their unusual upper bowls.

These capacity number should be taken with a big grain of salt they don´t say anything about standard of the arena. College arenas rarelly have separate seats in stead they have benches with numbers on them. Some arenas do have more upscale sections with single seats. In general they don´t come close to those in NBA/NHL.

I can't speak for all of them, but I would say colleges have single seats more often than not. The Frank Erwin Center has absolutely no benches.

I've also been to the Xcel Energy Center, this is one of the best arenas in the world for sure. Open concourses at the top of every level, every seat is padded, even the concrete is tinted so it doesn't look like boring grey concrete. And the upper level end seats are very steeply pitched which reminds me of the upper deck (The Oranges) in our old arena (Buffalo Memorial Auditorium) except we did without the sissy bars in front of every row they have in Minnesota.

A more acurate seating capacity should take into account the hockey & basketball seating capacities in North American arenas, ie, the Bell Centre's seating capacity is listed as 21.273 for hockey only, whereas the seating capacity for other arenas are listed for basketball, ie, the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia is listed here as 21.600 for basketball. (Check www.wikipedia.com for an accurate capacity)

So, to be fair, since the hockey seating capacity for the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia is 19,519 for hockey, the Bell Centre's hockey capacity of 21.273 should be increased by @ least the difference between Wachovia's basketball & hockey's capacity's of 2,081. Therefore, the Bell Centre's capacity should increase to a max basketball capacity of 23.354.

That's not how it works. Take HSBC Arena for example, the difference between basketball and hockey is less than 1000 seats.

The O2 (London) - 23,000
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b316/BenL26/Canary.jpg

Due to open in July this year, the building was completed in 2000 as the Millennium Dome. Only intended to stay open for a year, it remained for several years an empty national embarrassment. Designed by Richard Rogers as the largest dome in the world, it will also play a prominent part in the London 2012 Olympics for gymnastics and badminton.

Earls Court (London) - 19,000
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b316/BenL26/Earls20Court20-20Site20of20Brit20Aw.jpg

The huge Art Deco building was completed in 1937 to "rival any other in the world". After many improvements down the years, it is still used to host Britain's main music award ceremony, the BRIT Awards.

London is also home to many medium sized arenas including Wembley Arena (12,500), Hammersmith Apollo (9,000), Royal Albert Hall (8,000), Alexandra Palace (8,250) and the Carling Brixton Academy (5,000). Several sports arenas will be built for the London 2012 Olympics, including Zaha Hadid's Aquatics Centre (20,000). See the UK and Ireland Olympics thread for more details.

I didn't realise this thread was purely about basketball - a sport which isn't that popular in the UK. Britain's most popular sports are football, rugby and cricket and as a result, most of our sporting edifices are outdoors.

You are right that the 02 holds 20,000 for basketball and when it is will be used for Volleyball at the Olympics, Earls Court will have a capacity of 18,000. I was referring to Earls Court One - it does not have permanent stands as it can be formatted for music (including Razorlight and Pink Floyd's Roger Waters in the next couple of months), exhibitions and conferences.
