I remember going to Ohrid when I was 7 with my parents but unfortunately back then I was not able to appreciate its beauty as much as I would today.

I remember us walking through the small streets of the city...simply magnificent.

Im from Korca so we used to go to Pogradec almost every week and I went by the villages because It was nicer. took a boat for rent it was nice. I like Ohrid lake alot it beats alot of lakes I been to over here in Michigan. 1 think I hate is that it is dangerous because it has holes on the lakes bed and alot of people have drowned other than that its stunning and beautiful. Oooo and I love the fish they are called Koran and they are so f-in good. They had a little pool build next to the restaurants and forked the fish u wanted and cooked it right there for u the best seafood I have ever had (This was in Pogradec but same thing). You no ur on the Albanian side of Ohrid because u see Bunkers lmfaoooo.

Ohrid City is beautiful and I hope it is protected by Unesco.

Skanderbeg the architecture is indeed similar/same but it's completely wrong to say it is Albanian, cause the same style can be found from the Adriatic to the Black sea coast, from Thessaloniki to Nis...

Interesting about the holes on the lake bed. I don't think there is something like that on the Macedonian portion of the lake at least I haven't heard of some 'bermuda triangles' for people.
I personally like taking a boat and swimming in the deep waters some 2-3km from the shoreline cause I hate the crowded beaches, plus the water is so pure and refreshing in the deep. I grab some cold beers with me as well and that's what I call 'sex in the water'. Anyways the point of the story I started is that even in the depths where I usually go I have never encountered some weird current or whirlpool trying to suck me in.

And yeah Ohrid city is protected by UNSECO.

It is i think, that and Struga i believe. Anyway Ohrid is amazing, i would love to visit it sometime...maybe one day when i go that part of Albania i'll swim to the other side, i just hope they don't shoot me crossing the water lol

the bulk of foreign tourists is still Bulgarians, Serbs and Greeks. But I don't think the Bulgarians flock here as they used to do it in the 90s

i was looking at the pics above and i love the palm trees that are planted near the water. i think it makes the city look wayyyy better and more "touristy":) i think all those ugly pines should be switched with these or at least other trees. i posted another comment for skopje about trees as well. haha.

ohrid is a very beautiful city.i was twice in ohrid,and speechless,because of the beauty of this place(city and surrounding area)!!!

Ohrid was traditionally visited mostly by Dutch tourists , they were by far most numerous . Nowdays it's probably mostly Greeks and Serbs.

when i was there in mid july of this year there were mostly serbs, dutch, greeks and swedes.

that´s because u visited Struga and i was in Ohrid. And Struga is filled with albanians mostly from Kosovo.
Most tourist in Ohrid were from greece and serbia.

yes however that place used to be part of a bigger complex called Letnica which included a big open restaurant, a club, arcade game room etc. I think a shrinked crippled version of Letnica still exists but several chunks of the complex have been handed out to joints like McDonalds...

I also dislike the Ohrid McDonalds, it's more like a semi McDonalds... I'm not sure how McDonalds gave a go ahead for such a kiosk-like outlet... So I prefer the original Letnica is restored and McDonalds moves where I already suggested.

Also... Old Ohrid is not just the hill... The square (where Letnica and McDonalds are) all the way to the Turkish part and the green market at the end of the "korzo" is part of the old core. U can probaly orient Urself about which parts am I talking about.

I think Ohrid and many places like this has great potential because they are 'untouched' by the big international companies. It must have originality, that s why tourists come there and will come more and more. I am full of all the internationalised stuffs, my eyes are tired, i must see something pure, enthusiastic. Like Ohrid.

well the old city will remain as it is surely the authenticity will be preserved... as for the surrounding the further developement is inevitable. So far I like the hotel complexes along the shoreline I think they fit the surroundings nice I hope that will continue. Just now there are initiatives for new hotel projects we will see how that goes.

There has been a lot of urbanistic mistakes in Ohrid but they've mostly affected the newer parts of the town which are irrelevant and mostely inland. I also hope they won't ruing the coastline and the old city core.

Ochrid's lake is one of the most beautiful lakes in the world. I haven't seen a prettier one.

As a kid I used to spend holidays in Pogradec every summer and was always curious about Struga and Oher. Now it would be nice to have good roads to improve an all-round-the lake turism. Pogradec has become very ugly with new constructions, but I see that you guys have the same problem.

no it's too big and it's never cold enough for long enough. From the natural lakes only Dojran lake freeze because it has much smaller volume of water so it's easier.

LMAOO u guys need to promote ice fishing in ohrid. It freezes on the Albanian side but not to the extreme i can promise u if u walk on it u will say hi to the fishes.

I really like ohrid/struge.. I think the scenery around the lake is beautiful and the water is so warm. They were extending the beach last summer it looked cool all they need to do is get some sand and pour it over those pebbles on the beach..

I like Ohrid, been there a couple of times and liked everything about it, the town, the lake, restaurants, people...even though I must say I didnt get to meet that chick in the last photo.

I just wish the Albanian side of the lake were that nice. I know it has come a long ways but I dont think it will catch up to Macedonian side any time soon.
The commies really did a number on that area by turning Pogradec into an industrial city, setting up coal mines, etc. It makes me want to scream...

it'll all come in time it's inevitable. Couple of weeks ago I read some good news that the Albanian side is getting ready to build their water treatement fascilities to prevent pollution of the lake. THe Macedonian side has completed this long time ago collecting waste waters all along the coastline so no significant amounts of untreated water is entering the lake. With the Albanian side doing it the lake will be quite safe from pollution and that's the most important thing.

OHRID LAKE WATER IS CLEAN

The water of the Ohrid Lake is mostly of first category quality, including the coastline belt along the beaches on the Macedonia side.

The results of the measurements carried out at as many as 28 different locations by the Ohrid's branch office of the Healthcare Protection Office (HPO) showed this, Makfax's correspondent reported.

According to the results of the physical and chemical analysis, 61.2 percent of the water samples have been classified as Category 1, while 38.8 percent were of Category 2.

HPO informed that the four rivers flowing into the lake - Velgoshka, Koselska, Sateska and Cherava are the biggest polluters of the lake.

The analyses showed that 50 percent of the water of these lakes is of third class and 50 percent of fourth class. Pursuant to the Ordinance on Water Classification, these waters should be of second class.

I have a feeling that in about 2-3 years Ohrid will become Macedonia's Veliko Turnovo. In other words, because of the stunning beauty of the city & region real estate will flourish and tons of Englishmen will want to buy a house there to finish the rest of their days. :cheers:

Ohrid was very well developed in terms of touristic infrastructure from the times of communism. I think the contures about possible developement have been more or less set and I hope they remain. There are very few locations on the lake shore (Ohrid-St. Naum direction) where construction is possible because of the topography of the terrain. Also mountain Galicica is a national park which limits construction possibilites even further. There are small pockets remaining free for developement as the Biljanini izvori-Gorica stretch and around the existing satelite settlements but not that much.

If the line is crossed we'll only ruin this natural marvel. There is a lot of space for developement inland in the Ohrid area in the continuation of the northeastern suburbs and towards the airport. Those properties won't have a lake view but will still be very close to the old town and the beaches. I hope to see the town expanding in those directions.

The stretch Ohrid-Struga is mainly unused except for one camping site. It's mostely covered with some sort of bamboo and I'm not sure but I think it's protected because of the eco system. In the Struga area I have no clue how things are going and what are the possibilities I've always been kinda ignorant about that part. There are some great hotel complexes and touristic settlement west of the city towards the Albanian border though.

Struga City is 50/50 Macedonian-Albanian(i dont know including villages)

As for me I'm Bulgarian, mostly from Macedonia and Moesia. My relatives in Macedonia are split over what nationality they are, but it's the same family so the name doesn't really matter :)

Since im from Ohrid i can confirm that it has atleast 1500 gypsies, they were almost all bribed by the albanian parties in 2002 to state that they are 'Albanians' instead of Roma. Half the "albanians" in Ohrid are Gypsies, many gypsies in Ohrid admit it all the time that they get good money to write themselves down as Albanians.

In Bulgaria many gypsies claim to be Turks because they see it as more prestigious :lol: And the Turkish party also bribes them, so they vote for them, without even knowing who they're voting for. They just tell them which number to check. :bash:sorry for the off-topic comment

same thing in macedonia, except in Macedonia we have both the gypsies and the "torbesi"(muslim macedonians) stating in census papers that they are Albanians or Turks. Macedonia has unofficially around 100thousand 'torbesi', and only a fraction of them consider themselves Macedonians, most of them in the past considered themselves as Turks but in the past 8-10 years more than half of them write themselves in census stats as albanians, and also vote for albanian parties. Ill give you one example svet01. A large village near Struga called Labunista, all its 9,000 people are "Torbesi"(they all speak only macedonian language), in 1994 census 80% stated that they are Turks, the rest Macedonians, with a few percent stating they are Albanians. In 2002 census, same population, 85% stated they are Albanians(although they dont speak a word of albanian language). This "village" has more students than Struga! This is why the Albanians in Struga municipality are now a slight majority(but not in the city itself). Sorry i went off topic everyone, im not trying to stir a political debate here, im just stating some very interesting facts.. i dont understand how people can sell themselves for short change.

Macedonia's former Premier L.Georgievski, is disliked, not for his new Bulgarian passport, but for F**ing up Macedonia and robbing its wealth. He is so anti-Albanian that he would gladly give up a quarter of Macedonia's territory just to have no Albanians in what will be left of Macedonia. Most Macedonians still believe in inter ethnic harmony unlike him.
There is also a conspiracy circulating regarding his origins, many say he is born in Bulgaria and adopted into a macedonian family as a baby... n no i don't know if this is true.

The only reason why the macedonians who recieve Bulgarian passports are considered 'traitors' is not for the reason of getting a Bulgarian passport, its because they have to state their Bulgarian origin in order to do so. And if somebody feels they are Bulgarian than thats fine, but these people say they will do anything to get into Western Europe, and writing somthing on a piece of paper means nothing if it means they will have bread to eat the following day. Bulgaria uses these new pasports for its own propaganda purposes i admit.. and as i said before things like this happen everywhere in the Balkans, and at the end of the day if your willing to change ur identity for short change then you deserve to be treated as a traitor to ur people.

Just so i dont come across as a hard core nationalist, i actually believe that all the peoples on the balkans are closely related, separated only by religious beliefs and borders.

Noone is forcing anyone to become a Bulgarian citizen after all. And finally, what propaganda are we trying to spread, get serious. How exactly someone's identity is being changed? You guys are just too obsessed by those identity, ethnic and historical bullshits.

Of course you can get a BG passport without a Bulgarian origin, but the procedure is far more long and complicated. How someone who feels so strong with his origin will write so easily some other ? Retorical question.

2) Nice family story you have, now ill tell you my family story. My grandmother was beaten in primary school for saying to the teacher that she is macedonian, the teacher forced them to say they are serbians. During WWII the Bulgarians occupied Macedonia and they did the same, told them that they are not Macedonians and that they are Bulgarians... and ill tell you another story, my grandparents said that they all celebrated when the bulgarian occupiers were defeated by the partisans.
One thing i respect the albanians for is, atleast they dont have an issue with our identity, unlike the greeks, bulgarians and to a lesser extent the serbs.

Why are you always bringing up politics for? It's an Ohrid photo thread, not a ww2 history thread, do you understand? As for the people that welcomed the bulgarian army, they were hoping that the bg army wouldn't harm them or any others in Macedonia, but they were wrong. Thousands of Macedonian's were slaughtered, including 23,000 Macedonian Jews. So that to me is brutal occupation and nothing else.
SO PLEASE STOP RUINING EVERY MACEDONIAN THREAD WITH YOUR PROPAGANDA!!!

mate they are actually from this morning I was wrong. There was some big ass storm in southwestern Macedonia, there is even one casualty in Bitola. The waves in Ohrid were around 3m.

Yesterday we had a car accident, today we took our car to the insurance company and as it was at the parking, the storm had hit Sofia, a big marble isolation part of the nearby building tore apart and fell right onto our car. Now we have damage in the front part and on the roof. Just can't believe that! Those guys said it will take more than a month to repair it !#$$$$$$$$$#%@$$$$$@

well the casualty in Bitola is a victim of a billboard falling over him :ohno:. In Ohrid they say it was the worse storm since 1997 when parts of the piers were taken down by the waves.

They just showed on the news how the outer wall of some 4-5 storey new residential in "Mladost", Sofia , currently in rough construction status started to disassemble :ohno: Can you imagine how some investors are building right now here if some wind storm can do such damages ?!?

mate, I expect half of Skopje to collapse on the next quake with all those transitional residential structures going down (which wouldn't be a bad thing at all if it didn't involve casualties). Construction standards are getting back in place in the last several years but there is still work to be done.

all i have to say is...if they told you it would take one month to repair your car.. get a new mechanic!! immediately!

^^ Unfortunately I just can't get my new mechanic. The terms of the insurance contract are that the car has to be repaired at the official Renault service. Otherwise we could rush to some skillful mechanic of course (although I must confess I'm not into that), but that's stupid...I mean why should I pay if the insurance contract covers it?

And yes, the official Renault service is dead slow, sometimes they even don't have some parts at their warehouse so you are obliged to wait until they arrive, etc. Anyway, I hope those 5 weeks will include the preparing of insurance documents too (damage list, etc).

Last time we bumped into a concrete column at a parking, the damage was insignificant but we had to wait about 2 weeks before they fixed it.

The good thing is that you just have to leave the car at the insurance broker and tell them what's the problem. They bring the car at the service and negotiate with them. You usually don't need to worry about anything, just wait until they call you to come and take the car when it's repaired.

Bulgarian-Macedonian Company to Build Hotel Complex on Ohrid Lake

9 April 2008 | The Bulgarian-Macedonian company Media Investment will begin the construction of a hotel complex on the shores of the Ohrid Lake in southwestern Macedonia.

The land has been purchased and construction works are expected to begin shortly, the Macedonian businessman Zore Temelkovski, who owns 49 per cent of the company, told the national newspaper Vecher, though he did not disclose the future hotel’s exact location.

The luxurious complex, according to Temelovski, will resemble the five-star Emerald Hotel that the company already built on Bulgaria’s southern Black Sea Coast, in the village of Ravda, which received the prestigious Site of the Year award for 2007 in Bulgaria.

The company, in which 10 million euros were invested, will work in the area of contraction of business and spa centres and hotels and, according to Temelovski, that is a sure sign that even without NATO, there are no impediments for businessmen who want to invest in Macedonia.

The country was not invited to join NATO, as was much anticipated, at the conference in Budapest last week, because of the failure to resolve the conflict between it and Greece over the Macedonia’s official name.

Have you been to nemo in your third pic? :) It's a really cool place, bit of a shame though the sign kinda ruins the building.

As for nemo I couldn't go, no young relatives in Ohrid and was stuck with family for the week that I was there. All my clubbing in Macedonia was done at studio 54 in Prilep:)

I don't remember if anything will be built, i don't think so, it's not a very attractive building and really stands out on most Ohrid photos of that view.

Yea, really cool place i have been there for a few drinks :) as realek said they are going to build a small second "main square" which will have a view directly towards the Plaoshnik monastery and it should be pretty nice!

I think its so interesting that this is on a lake in the middle on land. Lake Ohrid must be very large, looks like the sea.

it does look like the sea especially on days with less visibility when the opposite shore can't be seen. Also the water transparency and color gives very sea-like feel.

Area wise it's comparable to the bays formed by the Halkidiki fingers.

Don't forget the cool trouts , really yummy :cheers:

you mean trouts that are protected.

It was main source of fishing there and quite famous, may be fish population decreased. But I really doubt there's no trouts fishing at all, I guess it's just limited.

Well alabnians are fishing, Macedonians shouldn´t, but as you can see you have eaten them:)
