Krazy March 12th, 2005, 11:34 AM Medical city gears up to host Asian Games
Work is well under way on the Athletes Village, the Doha Asian Games 2006, which will later transform into one of the largest of healthcare centres of its kind in the Middle East.
Set on a 63.5-hectare single city block in Doha, the project is expected to be completed before 2008 and is being designed and fitted out to the highest international health care standards.
The project was launched in 2003 and most of the contracts for the project have now been awarded.
“The client's brief was to produce a high-calibre hospital that would redefine medical care in the region, whilst at the same time creating a suitable environment, in the interim, to provide the best possible accommodation for the 10,000 to 12,000 athletes competing in the 2006 Asian Games. All this has to be fitted into the compressed time frame available for construction of the Village of less than two years,” says a spokesman for Fedcon (Federation of Design and Construction Services) of Thailand, the design and supervision consultant on the project.
To date, the client – Ministry of Municipal and Agricultural Affairs and Public Works Authority – has awarded at least 10 construction packages. Construction work is under way on all these packages and is scheduled for completion by early 2006.
In addition to these, sub-contracts that are yet to awarded include landscaping, hospital curtain-walling, low-voltage special systems and the hospital fit-out, says the spokesman.
“Once complete, the QR2.2 billion ($604 million) Doha 2006 Asian Games Athletes Village/Hamad Medical City will be a state-of-the-art medical facility that will have the best of equipment and staff that has been trained to the highest level,” says the spokesman.
Much of the focus of the project – which will eventually involve four hospitals – is centered on a 1,100-bed hospital, comprising paediatric, physical medicine and rehabilitation hospitals and a skilled nursing facility. Also part of the project is an oval 900-slot car park with access at the ground level as well as the basement level via four elevators and two escalators.
In addition to the hospital, the project also includes new residential accommodation for the hospital staff including a nurses’ hostel and apartment buildings for married staff.
The nurses hotel will accommodate about 2,400 nurses in eight-storey blocks, while the apartments will provide housing for 250 families in four-bedroom apartments.
These residential facilities will be provided with leisure and recreation amenities such as a nurses’ club and a married staff club containing suites of guest rooms. Both clubs will have swimming pools and tennis courts.
A seven-storey office block for the Ministry of Public Health will also be part of the project. It will include an open mall, a 300-seat auditorium, a 520-slot car-park and minister’s suite.
In addition, there will be an education centre containing a 300-seat auditorium and 16 classrooms. A daily mosque will be located within the married staff accommodation area and a larger Friday Mosque will be situated between the hospital and the ministry building.
The areas between the buildings will be extensively landscaped to provide not only ‘green cover’ but also leisure and meeting areas, and plazas will be laid out for both hospital visitors and staff.
The electrical and water requirements for the entire project will be serviced by a central energy plant (CEP), which will house a 66 kV gas-insulated switchgear primary substation. There will also be twelve 2,000-tonne capacity chillers to supply chilled water for cooling the various buildings. In addition, the CEP building will store and distribute potable, fire-fighting and irrigation water to the buildings and the landscaping.
Hill International Overseas is the project manager for the development.
Construction
Elaborating on the type of construction, the spokesman says: “Construction is generally reinforced concrete frame on pad foundation with post-tensioned concrete for the upper floors. The buildings are clad in pre-cast concrete panels and the interior finishes are of the highest quality with an extensive use of granite, marble wood panelling and other high-specification materials. High-quality double-glazed windows and curtain walling will be used on the project.
Work on the hospital and ancillary buildings will stop in the early months of 2006 and a ‘fit-out’ package will be undertaken, which will temporarily convert the buildings already completed by that time to become the Athletes Village for the 2006 Asian Games to be hosted by Qatar in December 2006.
Provision will be made to house the athletes and administrators in the residential units. Other needs of the games will be met by temporarily constructing a dining hall, a polyclinic for athletes and a range of leisure and recreation facilities along with administration and security requirements.
On completion of the games, the temporary structures will be removed and work on the hospital and ancillary buildings will be resumed, he adds.
Krazy March 12th, 2005, 11:55 AM Among the largest projects in progress in Qatar is the $600 million Hamad Medical City complex, which will initially serve as the athletes’ village for the 2006 Doha Asian Games. J&P-Avax has won the $104 million deal for construction of a hospital and an underground car-park with a capacity for 556 vehicles while a $145 million finishing works contract awarded to Saudi Arabia’s El-Seif Engineering Contracting for married housing and nursing accommodation units (See page 117).
As part of the infrastructure required to host the Asian Games, construction of the Asian Games City is under way. Once completed, over 30 sports facilities will be in place. Existing buildings are being renovated as new ones are being built, including Al Sadd Stadium, Al Rayyan Sports Centre, Al Ilihad Sports Centre, Al Arabi Sports Centre, Swimming Centre (Aquatic) and Khalifa Stadium.
Bahraini Spirit March 12th, 2005, 06:58 PM I saw the old hospital when I was in Doha about 4 years ago, but this is much better. I like the greenery.

Krazy March 21st, 2005, 07:26 AM Qatar plans to spend $100b on infrastructure projects
Doha: Qatar is planning to spend about $100 billion (Dh367 billion) on investment and infrastructure projects over the next seven years, officials said.
The government has revised its current allocations for investment and infrastructure projects, said Shaikh Mohammad Bin Ahmad Bin Jassem Al Thani, Minister of Economy and Commerce, according to a report in the daily Al Sharq. The minister spoke during a seminar on investment opportunities in Qatar recently held in Spain.
The Public Works Authority (PWA) has chalked out a five-year road development plan, said Ahmad Sultan Al Kuwari, a PWA official who participated in the seminar.
PWA expects to spend 13.7 billion Qatari riyals (Dh130 billion) by 2009 on the road development plan, he said. Among the road projects under consideration is an effort to upgrade several major arteries in Doha, plus the construction of new subways.
PWA has identified 32 projects to be completed during the five-year plan, he said. Most of the infrastructure projects currently under way are slated to be completed by 2006.
Meanwhile, PWA's projected expenditures on projects over the next few years, including those in the road development plan, total about 26 billion riyals (Dh247 billion), said Ziad Mansour Al Khayarin, PWA's general manager.
During an official presentation at the Central Municipal Council, Al Khayarin said the 13.7 billion riyals for road projects was just one part of the overall vision for infrastructure development.
An additional 6.8 billion riyals (Dh64.8 billion) is to be spent on sewage systems and 5.6 billion riyals (Dh53.4 billion) on buildings construction and renovation, he said.
Plans for 36 new schools, 20 kindergartens, the Asiad Village, Hamad Medical City and a cardiac hospital are also under study, officials said.
PWA will work to ensure local companies have ample opportunities to participate in all projects under study, Al Khayarin said.
Qatar4Ever March 21st, 2005, 11:19 AM i would say this project is about 70% finished.

Qatar Son 333 January 3rd, 2008, 10:28 AM WHAT ! 2011 !!!!!! this is way of to be considered completed i think the right word is reconstruction !
HMC children hospital to become operational in 2011
DOHA • The first exclusive children's hospital in Qatar, being established by the Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) is scheduled to go operational by the end of 2011.
Work on the 217- bed facility is in progress at the former Asian Games Village, located opposite the Hamad General Hospital, which has now been converted to the Hamad Medical City .
An 11-storey building at the site has been redesigned for the proposed hospital, which will offer all medical and surgical services for children under one roof, Dr Abdullah Mohammed Al Kaabi, project director said in a press conference yesterday.
" The interior of the building needs to be redesigned to make it suitable for a children's hospital. This work is expected to be completed in two years. It will take another year to bring and install all the necessary equipment. The hospital is scheduled to go operational by the middle or the end of 2011," said Al Kaabi.
HMC has already signed a partnership agreement with the Canada-based Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids), affiliated with the University of Toronto, to develop the facility.
" We considered seven hospitals for the partnership and SickKids was finally selected because of its reputation as the most research-intensive hospital in Canada," said Al Kaabi.
The new facility has also been envisaged as a research centre, while providing high-quality health care in a child-friendly atmosphere. SickKids will help in all stages of its establishment from designing up to administration.
A team from the hospital will visit Doha next month to check the existing facility and chart out an implementation plan for the project, said Al Kaabi.
The hospital will cater to all children aged up to 14 years, nationals as well as residents, in the initial stages.
"We will seek permission from the authorities to extend the age limit up to 18 years," said Al Kaabi.
The hospital will offer all major specialties including pediatric cardio-vascular programmes, emergency care, ENT, ophthalmology, among others. It will also focus on obesity and diabetes among children.
The premises will include children's play areas and entertainment facilities to create a child and family friendly atmosphere. Even the colour of the building will be decided with this aspect in view.
There is also a plan, at a later stage to a set up special forum for parents to involve them in the functioning of the hospital.
Asked if the 217 bed-facility is sufficient to meet the increasing demands of the country in the pediatric sector, Al Kaabi said, " There are other facilities for children coming up in the country both in the private and public sectors. A super specialty hospital for women and children- Sidra Medical and Research Center- is being established by the Qatar Foundation at the Education City premises. The new hospitals coming up in various parts of the country will also have facilities for children."
As for the cost of treatment at the new hospital, Al Kaabi said, it will be decided later by the HMC management, in line with the system followed in other HMC facilities.
