Panama City never ceases to amaze me. Get a load of all the construction in progress at the far end of the third panoramic...This has been said by many observers before me: At the current rate of construction and given the staggerin' number of projects, by the year 2010, Panama City (already the best skyline in L. A.) will easily be among the top ten worldwide. Dubai is the only city (that I know of) with a more accelerated rate of growth.

The National Lottery building (erected in the mid 60's) seen below left, is Calidonia's lone and Panama City's first highrise. About 25 years seperate the completion of this structure and the current construction boom.

A latteral scroll will give you a visiual "stroll" of the following districts (from left to right): Calidonia, Casco Viejo, Bella Vista, El Dorado, Marbella, El Cangrejo, Obarrio, Punta Paitilla, Punta Pacifica and Punta del Este.

Ive never seen Panama before, and I am impressed

Not only is it huge, but it doesnt have any of those bullshitty tacky buildings that ruin an otherwise impressive skyline (think shanghai, abu dhabi). This place reminds me of a young Hong Kong, and that alone is one helluva a compliment

So when did it start getting built up like this?.. No offense, but I never knew Panama had any skyscrapers

Panama's urban landscape is one of the better kept secrets on this planet. Panama City is - in essence - the Rodney Dangerfield of cities (it gets no respect), mainly because it is unknown.

The construction frenzy began shortly after the 1989 U. S. invasion (to depose military strongman Manuel Noriega) flattened part of the city. The vertical growth, if you will, was the country's way of rising from the ashes, so to speak.

I too, am a Panama City enthusiast and my contribution to this thread is the following: In the third panoramic, you can see the lush greenery of Metropolitan Natural Park in the background between the first and second highrises. In the picture below, the skyline is seen from the afore-mentioned park, the opposite vantage point to Panama Bay.

In fact, if you click on the first word in my signature, you can learn some fast facts about the country; if you click on the bottom line, you can see more images of Panama City.
