Downtown gets renamed, redefined and rebranded

Washington Business Journal - February 2, 2007by Douglas Fruehling and Prabha NatarajanStaff Reporters

D.C. is redefining "downtown."

The city's Office of Planning has initiated a major effort to expand the boundaries of the traditional office and entertainment areas, creating a planning zone called Center City. The initiative more than doubles the area traditionally considered downtown by adding the North of Massachusetts Avenue area (NoMa) as well as the Southeast and Southwest waterfronts.

The center city project itself on the old convention center site is very impressive.

Damn thats impressive. DC knows how to get shit done. Baltimore needs to take a page from their redevelopment book. (Although there are things Washington could take from Baltimore's book as well).

Im glad soemthing's being done with that site. I was tired of seeing a half demolished convention center. Now Im tired of seeing a surface lot along NY Ave.

The plaza and shops would be a great uplift to that area. The tree-lined streets would be a really great addition. Lots of green, lots of shade. The only thing is it might present a problem at night, blocking light during the leaved months.
