Baltimore is one of the largest cities in the Northeastern United States. It is located in the state of Maryland and was settled by the english in 1661.
The city has a population of around 651,000 but it is still loosing population to its suburbs unlike most large cities in the US toda.

Although I've had some great times in B-more, its skyline leaves a lot to be desired. It has decent density, but should have some supertalls. Neat harbor.

Baltimore has Washington D.C. beat by more than 100,000 people and 30 square miles. ....D.C. just has more sprawl.....sprawling monster it is. Anyways, you need to get the facts straight.

And about the short buildings, Baltimore has height restrictions in some areas. Not sure what they are though. There have been numerous proposals for really tall buildings in the city, but for some reason, they keep falling through. I think the skyline needs at least 1 or 2 really tall buildings to bring it out. It looks wopsided to me in its current state.

Well i agree being from b-more it does need some more taller buildings but, there are a couple of new high rise proposals going up. A 35 story and a 28 story for starters plus a slew of apartment buildings going up all over downtown and the new aqurium building! Some of these pics are old and dont show harbor east with the 31 story mariott hotel . And just for the record Baltimore and DC are one metropolitan area. the 2 have grown so much in the past . The Washington Post did an article on it. saying that the new metro area is about the same size as the state of conneticut and ranked fourth in the nation for population.

I love the inner harbor's look, but the skyscrapers need work. The tallest building is Legg Mason (great company in an ugly building...it deserves better.) I don't care if tall blocks looked good in the 70s, it's ugly now. I love the quirky postmodern buildings, but you can tell they didn't eat their veggies either. :D It's too bad that the Bank of America building wasn't at least a couple hundred feet taller, otherwise it would be the crown jewel of Baltimore. Plus, you can barely see it's dome and needle behind 100 E. Pratt Street (the one next to Legg Mason with the caged awning over it.)

not bad for a subarb of washington DC

Spoken by someone who obviously hasn't been here. They are two very different places. Baltimore is larger than DC (city population), has it's own distinct attitude that is thankfully NOT like DC and its overwhealming Federalism. Among the people I have met in both cities, personally and businesswise, whenever they express a preference to move, the people who would move from DC to Baltimore outnumber those that would go the other way by about a factor of 10.

Anybody that finds Baltimore to be boring just hasn't tried. It ain't NY (what is?) but there are restaurants, museums, theaters, universities, night life, music, easy access to DC and Philadelphia and easy access to rural places, beach and mountains. All that with tolerable weather too, like no category 4 hurricanes. All things considered, most people really don't do much with a skyline; once you've seen it you've seen it.

David3820
September 30th, 2004, 05:48 AM
Well sure Baltimore maybe be a fun place to be and other good things which I don't know all about since I've never been there but we are only supposed to be rating it's skyline here. So I'm of course only rateing what I think of it's skyline so you can't say I haven't tried. And Baltimore's skyline I find very boring at first glance unlike NYC's, Toronto's, San Francisco's, Chicago's and countless others which I also never get bored of seeing.

Baltimore is one of America's "forgotten" cities that is really just waiting patiently for its moment in the sun again, like Norfolk, VA. What with new development and a push in America for center city living, it'll come soon enough. I like it as is, though, especially with its beautiful historic density. 8.

I think the problem on this thread is that the wrong pics are being posted. They show the wrong angles of Baltimore's skyline, plus their outdated. Yes I agree that our skyline isn't that tall, but just wait 5-10 yrs from now. We'll be compared to bigger cities skyline wise like philly, boston, etc.

Here are some updated skyline photos of Baltimore.

Yo Will, dont take it the wrong way with what the guy from Canada said. They have no idea about most of our U.S cities.Im from Norfolk/Va Beach and have been to B'more plenty of times and in person its skyline is great.

Most dont know baltimore usta be one of Americas largest cities in the early 1900's. When the suburbs started getting developed the city lost population but, Baltimore is a historic and great American city. I Love it.

So pay no attention to a person whom is from another country who has no idea about our countries cities and what is a suburb and what is not. Man, Baltimore has a large skyline to many and is great.

Baltimore really got jipped with the lack of a taller skyline for such a decent-sized city.

I wouldn't say Baltimore has lots of sprawl, either.. because the density goes out quite a bit, and even the suburbs are very dense in terms of U.S. cities.

However, Baltimore is very cheap, poor city that is improving especially in terms of Fells Point and Federal Hill.

Its crime rates are among the highest in the country.

That white bulding in the foreground in shots taken from the harbour is a bit of an eye sore. Its crown looks like it's made of razorwire in some shots. If that building were to be removed, the skyline would go up an entire point or two in my books.

And about the guy saying someone from Canada couldn't rate it because he's from a foreign country, what does being from another country and "understanding" American cities have to do with the ability to rate a skyline? Obviously it's a very beautiful city, but u don't need to be American to tell whether or not a skyline is appealing.

I voted in the poll some time ago, before the better pics were added, and gave it a 5.5, but I might rate it higher if I could do over again.

^^ the reason the skyline isn't as big as it should be is i think because of the population loss. in 1950, the population was almost 1,000,000! Then, it started to decrease and was at 636,251 in 2000. But now, the population is stable and people think it will rise again. There is a building proposed at 600 through 800 feet and a lot more that are tall. the skyline will only get better

Baltimore is a beautiful city...I love the rowhouses and the harbor, truly photogenic.

It truly is one of the US's most underrated cities.

My only gripes with the skyline is the fact that there is no defining one, those buildings can may as well be anywere, and it feels as though Baltimore has a height limit, (which, AFAIK, they don't).

Okay, so it doesn't exactly major in the skyline department, but at least its a charmer and is DENSE!

not bad for a subarb of washington DC

A HUGE LOL to that!Although I Absolutely LOVE going to Washington DC,they're skyline/population/size doesn't compare to Baltimore.Washington DC doesnt really have a skyline and their population is over 100,000 less than ours and their size is also smaller to ours.Nobody should ever compare Baltimore to Washington DC as a suburb when Baltimore is clearly bigger!

Although I know that we'll never be like New York or Chicago or Philadelphia, each city has their own pase.I agree that it has taken Baltimore literally FOREVER to have an exceptional skyline, our time is coming VERY soon! The skyline that everyone has seen or invisioned in their minds is dramatically coming to a change!Baltimore will no longer have a 529 footer as our tallest. To tell the truth, we don't know the maximum height of our new tallest giving that their are many proposals that are a lot taller than that.10 Inner Harbor, which is going through some changes right now, will reach a total from 717 ft-750 ft and other proposals call for taller buildings than that.So Baltimore WILL change soon, just give it a couple more years and you'll see!For now,I give it a 6.5/10 but that will go up in a couple of years as well.

Baltimore is bigger that DC geographically and in city population. Washington has a bigger more cosmopolitan downtown and bigger metro. The two cities are obviously the anchors of the entire metro neither being a suburb of the other.

Baltimore has a talller skyline, DC has a larger ubran fabric. The two cities compliment on another perfectly.

Baltimore skyline IMO = 7.
