Derby Pie or crab cakes? That's the decision facing officials of the extreme sports competition Dew Action Sports Tour, who are likely to choose either Louisville, Ky., or Baltimore as the event's 2007 leadoff site.

Stops two through five are scheduled. They are Cleveland, Portland, Ore., Salt Lake City and Orlando, Fla. The first stop, known as the Panasonic Open, is set for June 21-24.

It would be awesome if Baltimore gets the chance to host this event. What could be better than a nationally televised event that provides positive publicity and additional revenue for the city.

Skateboarding in the city

M&T Bank Stadium’s parking lots will be overrun with skateboard ramps, high-flying motor cross riders and rock bands this summer when the ASPT Dew Tour makes its first stop of the 2007 season in downtown Baltimore.

The tour, a traveling circus of action sports, is expected to officially announce the event at a news conference Tuesday morning that will include city and company officials as well as last year’s skateboard champion — and Baltimore native -— Bucky Lasek.

Baltimore’s stop will be called the Panasonic Open.

A spokeswoman for the Maryland Stadium Authority would not confirm the dates or give specific information on the event, but the ASPT Dew Tour Web site shows a tour stop for the dates June 21-24. The site said an announcement was pending for the dates.

In February, tour spokeswoman Nicole Mancuso told a California newspaper that the tour was trying to decide between Baltimore and Louisville, Ky., for the June event.

In an e-mail Friday, she declined to give out any information on the Open in Baltimore.

A source involved with the planning, though, confirmed the event and its location Friday.

A call to Mayor Sheila Dixon’s press secretary was not returned.

The four-day Baltimore competition will be the first of five stops of the tour, which is in its third year. The athletes compete in six categories, including skateboarding, BMX and freestyle motor cross.

At the end of the tour, champions in six categories share about $2.5 million in prize money.

The tour is owned by NBC Universal and Live Nation, a live event and venue management company.

According to a release announcing the rest of the 2007 tour schedule, about 250,000 people attended the five events in 2006, and an average of 38 million viewers watched on NBC and the USA Network.

Beyond the competition, the Open will a “festival village” with video gaming and interactive events, as well as live music. Last year’s tour was headlined by the band Hoobastank.

While no price information was available, tickets for the October stop started at $6 and went as high as $30 for a four-day pass.

Other stops on the tour will include Cleveland; Portland, Ore.; and Salt Lake City.

Yeah it will be televised and it looks as if a good number of people watch!
