A benchmark Kuwait office development, short listed for prestigious award
An Atkins Bahrain project, the Al Sharq office complex, has been short listed for the 2007 MIPIM (http://www.mipim.com/)Architectural Review Future Projects Award - Offices category. The 180m tower will cover an area of 56,400sq.m. Commissioned by Al Mar & Aqar, the complex combines work and leisure, internal and outside spaces, and offers a variety of scenarios for business within a sustainable and environmentally responsible design. Hovering above a glass fronted entrance is a podium with a sky garden food court. Office spaces are hung from a pairing of parallel blades topped at roof level with a gym, spa, health club and pool. Floating above this pool deck is a suspended high-panoramic views. Solar panel cladding contributes to the green building’s energy needs while the foliage camouflage provides office workers a place to step outside and recharge.

Initially a concept design for a client this was subsequently the winning entry in the international MIPIM competition organised by the Architectural Review magazine.
The development provides a flexible campus-like environment in which to do business.
Atkins approach to the design was driven by a series of layered work spaces that are framed by 210m parallel blades. These spaces are vertically zoned and change function and appearance depending upon the level they occupy in the building.
There are three specific aspects to the building: the blades, its verticality and its sustainable design elements.
Visually, the building comprises two parallel blades between which office spaces are hung. Even the offices on the lowest levels are considerably elevated, thereby giving them perfect panoramic views of the surrounding city.

That's what I though!! LOOL!
I love this tower. I think it'll look great in the skyline. There is already a similar tower U/C in Q8, the Gate (I think), but the design is more Islamic. This tower looks more like a retro 60's design.
Skoulikimou May 13th, 2007, 01:37 PM this add was published today in a kuwaiti newspaper
in the render you can see clearly that the tower will be located were is the fire station next to arraya tower

differences75 May 16th, 2007, 10:04 AM i don't think the fire station will be touched .. the plot of land for the project is already ready and empty right next to the station ... this project is right next to global's new headquarter ...

differences75 August 21st, 2007, 12:14 PM from those renderings i am sure this project will NEVER EVER be built in kuwait ...
and i am wrong .. they made the design based on removing the firestation .. will never happen ..
CrazY August 21st, 2007, 05:23 PM amazing renders :)
i saw this on the render skouli provided, the building next to the tower looks like a firestation.....
can they build the tower on the current location of the station and they build the other one next to the tower on their own expense ??

Kuwaiti tower wins high-rise award
14 August 2007
The Atkins-designed Al Sharq office complex in Kuwait has won the CNBC Arabian Property Award for high-rise architecture.
Nicholas Bailey, head of concept architecture at
Atkins Middle East in Bahrain, said: "Al Sharq is the way forward in terms of defining a new architecture for Kuwait and we are delighted to be recognised in this way for such an exciting and prestigious award.
"Atkins' design work is largely about adding maximum value to clients' projects through the collective cerebral processes of our multi-discipline design team, and it's fantastic to be involved with the project and also with the strong client-consultant partnership that drives innovation," he added.

suzan November 20th, 2007, 07:50 PM British architects Atkins has been busy designing another award winning tower, this time to be located in Kuwait.
Standing at 210 metres the Al Sharq tower, located in Kuwait will cover a total of 56,400 square metres and will be a mixed use tower, the main body of which will accommodate premium grade offices.
Forming an almost campus like workspace the tower has a glass fronted entrance containing retail space which will be set back in a shady arcade. A podium featuring shops and restaurants set amongst a sky garden hovers above. Rising skywards from the podium are two parallel between which the office floors are suspended.
The design which was commissioned by Al Mar and Aqar is in keeping with Atkins apparent commitment to building ecologically friendly towers and pioneering new engineering techniques in the process.
It allows for shallow floor plates and heavily shaded facades that not only decrease the towers environmental impact but also allows internal environments to be comfortable for workers and bathed in natural diffused light. The cladding also incorporates the use of solar panels reducing the energy consumption of the tower and coloured fins to lessen solar gain.
Throughout the tower sky gardens are strategically placed to provide open spaces for workers to relax in and will also provide respite from the sun, even the lowest of the office floors will have panoramic views of the surrounding area. At the top of the tower an executive gymnasium, health club, spa and pool will feature.
The design for the tower which was originally just a concept, was the winner of the international MIPIM award 2007 and has also been awarded the CNBC Arabian Property High Rise Architecture Award.

thrasher81 November 21st, 2007, 03:29 PM MashAllah. This instant classic of a tower will give the city a proverbial facelift. No offence, but the capital needs a lot of work and a tower like this one will do.
Hope it gets approved.
3amaar ya Kuwait.

ok, the article says they are going to build a new car parking building for sharq area, and to build a new fire station on sour street to replace the helaly fire station next to arraya center. The Al-Maal real estate company sent to the firefighting public office a message to move the helaly fire station in sharq, block 7.
