bonixx February 13th, 2007, 01:41 PM Lucban’s Pride: Pahiyas Fesitval
by Toni de Villa
The colorful Pahiyas festival that we have known for years dated as far back in the 16th century when Catholicism is on the rise in Quezon province. As many have told, it started as a way of thanksgiving for a good harvest. And the bountiful offers were given to the Franciscan missionaries who brought Catholicism in the 1500s.
Since then, it already begun as a tradition among the Lucbanins until 1595 when the construction of the wooden church paved the way for the locals to bring their harvest to the church. It was believed that this rite must be done by the farmers in order to avoid bad luck, drought and famine. But this is actually done to celebrate the feast of San Isidro, patron saint of farmers. Through the years, they were showered with many blessings and harvest continued to be in uprising. Such time came when people have thought of displaying their harvest in front of their houses where the priest would come and bless them. Each year, the route of the priest blessing the harvest, vary for everyone to get a chance to participate.

So, get ready with your sneakers and rubber shoes as you trek the old streets of Lucban during this season. First thing one would notice is the “kiping.” This is a wafer made of rice and shaped into a tree leaf. It comes in colors of pink, green and yellow matched with richness of their harvested fruits that are then lined-up as decoration in front of a participating house. Another thing that can be made out of “kiping” is a chandelier that is also placed in each house. But what keeps you looking back at these creations is not just the color but the ingenuity and creativity of the people who keep reinventing concepts year after year.

Next best thing are the floats that are also seen in other towns of Quezon in celebration of San Isidro Festival. Fresh fruits and vegetables are everywhere and it has been a tradition that people pick them once they pass along your area.
Presently, the Pahiyas Festival has become the pride not only of Lucbanins but all Quezonians for consistently keeping the culture and religion alive. The bright colors of “kiping” transcend the beauty if this town, not to mention the friendly smiles and greetings you get to receive from one street to another.

Lucban is one of the most-visited places in Quezon Province especially during summer. It has continued to be the undeniable Summer Capital in Southen Tagalog for its inviting and cold weather. It was told in the myth that five men found Lucban Quezon during the 16th century in the persons of Marcos Tigla, Lucas Guimba, Lucas Galandang, Lucas Nanawa and Antonio Manduman. And it was in fact, Marcos Tigla who became the first “kapitan.” A year later, people flocked in this town not only because of its weather but also its places. One particular site is its church. It was built in 1630 by the order of Kapitan Lucas Martin. But in 1732, a huge fire hit this Roman Catholic church and none was left except for the convent. But years later, it was rebuilt and has remained to be sure spot for tourist until now for its nostalgic façade.

Mayohan sa Tayabas Festival
Mayohan sa Tayabas is the yearly program of the municipal government to foster solidarity and community. Through a nine-day celebration, which takes place on May 11-18, the Tayabasin honors the glory as well as blesses the wounds and sacrifices of the past. Mayohan is a season to converge in Tayabas as the mother navel of the province of Quezon. From the linang, or countryside, the rural folk gather at the town proper. Those who study and work in Manila and other places return home.
Mayohan opened May 11 with the Parada ng Baliskog, the Tayabas arch of welcome. Thirty-three barangays and various organizations of government and civil society exhibit their baliskog, all brightly decorated with Tayabas indigenous materials such as buli, rattan, dried flowers, kiping and tistis.
On May 15, Mayohan gives tribute to San Isidro with a procession reminiscent of the yearly Quiapo devotion to Jesus Nazareno. From many towns of Quezon, multitudes of peasants and workers—predominantly male—flock to Tayabas. They clamor for suman and other pabitin as their sweat, strength, and rivalry pervade in the air. Impelled by their yearly panata or sacrificial devotion to San Isidro, they participate in Hagisan ng Suman, believing that the bounty gathered in their sacks heralds economic upliftment. It portends the amount of their next harvest or income for the year.
Suman is the ritual gift of Hagisan. It is cooked with great enthusiasm by Tayabenses because Hagisan is an opportunity to share their prosperity. Bundles of suman are gaily tied in the pabitin, which is made out of a special kind of bamboo called bagakay. Pabitin is actually an installation art that is not simply exhibited. As soon as the image of San Isidro passes by, pabitin must be emptied of its colorful array of abundance, which aside from suman, includes banana, mango, buko, pineapple, and other summer fruits
Agawan Festival
The Agawan Festival is an annual agricultural festival held in Sariaya, Quezon, Philippines every 15th May.
The festival name, Agawan, is of recent development. It was the idea of Rev. Fr. Raul Enriquez, now the town's parish priest, president of its tourism council and the proponent of the town's quadricentennial celebration in 1999.
http://img369.imageshack.us/img369/972/normalagawan4ki2.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
The name describes the main feature of the fiesta procession. As the parade winds its way through the streets, people snatch the goodies and other produce hanging on the houses they pass by or on a pabitin, specially made for the parade. At the same time, people in the houses throw food, fruits and money into the parade.
http://img329.imageshack.us/img329/2723/normalagawan7dc0.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Before the parade, nearby residents decorate the outside of their homes. Colorful buntal hats are festooned all over the façade of houses. String beans are draped on windows to make curtains and banana trees are used to adorn fences. The primary, and most traditional, element in the decoration was the bagakay, or young bamboo branches from which junk food, fruits, candies and money were hung for people to snatch as they pass by.
http://img369.imageshack.us/img369/4757/normalagawan6sj2.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
People say no matter how high the bagakays are, they would bow when the image of San Isidro Labrador passes by, allowing people to grab the goodies.
The Feast of San Isidro Labrador (May 15)
It is the feast day celebration of the farmer's patron saint, a thanksgiving for a year-long bountiful harvest. The celebration involves hanging all sorts of fruits, candies, food crops and multi-colored kiping on bamboo poles.

Pasayahan sa Lucena (May 27-29)
Pasayahan sa Lucena was conceptualized to showcase the natural and ecological interrelationship and independence between nature and man. It also promotes the ways of life inherent among the people of Lucena. All these find exquisites and appreciative expressions through a mammoth gathering of colors, outlandish costumes and symbolic floats reminiscent of Mardi Gras in Rio de Janeiro and New Orleans.

The first Pasayahan in 1987 was a big triumph that it has become an annual affair. Year after year the Pasayan draws a sea of frolicking humanity. Pasayahan sa Lucena 2006 features Chami Festival to promote Lucena’s very own native delicacy, the chami. Other features such as the Midnight Madness Sale and street concerts take stage in the Pasayahan.

http://img213.imageshack.us/img213/4239/chami1ff4.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Chami is a tasty and popular food made of locally manufactured noodles and cooked in pancit like manner with pork, vegetables and the usual condiments. Its locally manufactured noodles make the recipe distinctly delicious.
Chami is affordable and is served in numerous restaurants in Lucena City and small snack bars and canteens. In support of the Chami industry, the City Government has made it an activity to conduct the chami festival during Pasayahan sa Lucena festivities.
The long strip of Quezon Avenue, major street in the city proper is
filled with participants who are part of the “Chami Festival”. Participants are provided with free ingredients and their own original recipe of chami. The winner gets a prize from the sponsors and from the City Government. This is done annually during the town fiesta.

Fil-Am energy expert to develop wind, solar project in Aurora
By Manny Galvez
Tuesday, June 3, 2008
BALER, Aurora – A Filipino-American energy expert has been tapped to lead the way in the launch of renewable energy projects in the province, including solar and wind farms.
Sen. Edgardo Angara told The STAR that engineer Larry Asera will help the provincial government in setting up wind, solar and hydro power projects in the province.
Angara said that Asera, a graduate of the University of California in Berkely and the Massachussets Institute of Technology, has already done some preliminary studies on the potentials of renewable energy projects in the province.
Asera, accompanied by Benjamin Mina, the provincial environment and natural resources officer, flew by helicopter to Casiguran town in northern Aurora for an aerial inspection of possible sites for solar and wind farms.
Following the inspection, Asera told Mina that an initial three hectares of solar farm can be developed in Barangay Esteves, Casiguran with a capacity of three megawatts.
The Fil-Am energy expert also discussed the prospects of renewable energy with Agripino Teh San, general manager of the Aurora Electric Cooperative (Aurelco) and technical director Noel Vidat.
Asera’s visit came after Angara toured his sprawling house in California to see his wind farm and one-hectare solar farm which supplies the energy requirements of the City of Vallejo. He used to work in Cotabato and in parts of Mindanao. His grandparents migrated to Hawaii. He later married a Filipina from Abra.
Asera owns 22,000 acres of lands in Napa Valley, considered a wine country and in Vallejo. He also built and now operates 25 wind turbines in the area with a power-generating capacity of 1.8 megawatts each. Each turbine costs $1.5 million. With 25 turbines, these cost a whopping P1.5 billion.
Following the visit, the senator invited the Fil-Am to visit the province where they toured the Dicasalarin Cove in Baler town which, Angara said, would be turned into laboratory for renewable energy so that the entire energy source in the province is not fuel and gas but renewable energy.
Angara principally sponsored the Renewable Energy Bill in the Senate, considered a ground-breaking piece of legislation aimed to make the country less dependent on fossil fuel but more on biomass which is abundant in the country.
The Baler senator said that Asera who is also helping Puerto Princesa City in setting up its own solar systems, will enable the province of Aurora to be the first provincial local government unit in the country to develop clean and sustainable energy technology.

THE IBALONG EPIC
A long, long time ago, there was a rich land called Ibalong. The hero Baltog, who came from Botavora of the brave clan of Lipod, came to this land when many monsters were still roaming in its very dark forests. He decideed to stay and was the first to cultivate its field and to plant them with gabi.
Then one night, a monstrous, wild boar known as Tandayag saw these field and destroyed the crops. Upon knowing this, Baltog decided to look for this boar with all his courage and patience. At last, as soon as he saw it, he fearlessly wrestled with it, with all his might. Baltog was unafraied. He was strong and brave. Though the Tandayag had very long fangs, he was able to pin down the monstrous, wild boar and break apart its very big jawbones. With this, Tandayag fell and died.
After this fight, Baltog went to his house in Tondol, carrying the Tandayag’s broken jawbones. Then, he hung it on a talisay tree in front of his house. Upon learning of the victory of their Chief Baltog, the people prepared a feast and celebrated. The very big jawbones of the dead boar became an attraction for everyone. Thus, came the tribes of Panikwason and Asog to marvel at it.
The second hero who came to the land of Ibalong was Handyong. Together with his men, he had to fight thousands of battles, and face many dangers to defeat the monsters. As warriors, they first fought the one-eyed monster with three necks in the land of Ponong. For ten months, they fought without rest. And they never stopped fighting until all these monsters were killed.
Handyong and his men made their next attack against the giant flying sharks called Triburon which had hardy flesh and sawlike teeth that could crush rocks. They continued fighting until the defeat of the last Triburon.
They tamed the wild carabaos. They even drove away the giant and very fierce Sarimao which had very sharp fingernails. And using their spears and arrows, they killed all the crocodiles which were as big as boats. With all these killings, the rivers and swamps of Ibalong turned red with blood. It was at this time that the savage monkeys became frightened and hid themselves.
Among the enemies of Handyong and his men, the serpent Oryol was the hardest to kill. Having a beautiful voice, Oryol could change its image to deceive its enemies. To capture it, Handyong tried different ways. But Oryol escaped every one of it and disappeared.
So, alone and unafraid, Handyong decided to look for Oryol in the heart of the forest. He followed the beautiful voice and was almost enchanted by it in his pursiut. Days and nights passed until Oryol came to admire Handyong’s bravery and gallantry. Then, the serpent helped the hero to conquer the monsters, thus restoring peace to the entire Ibalong.
In one of the areas of Ibalong called Ligmanan, Handyong built a town. Under his leadership and his laws, slaves and masters were treated equally. The people planted rice and because of their high regard of him, they named this rice after him. He built the first boat to ride the waves of Ibalong’s seas. Through his good example, his people became inspired and came up with their own inventions. There was Kimantong who made the plow, harrow, and other farming tools; Hablom who invented the first loom for weaving abaca clothes; Dinahong, an Agta, who created the stove, cooking pot, earthen jar, and other kitchen utensils; and Sural who brilliantly thought of the syllabary and started to write on a marble rock. This was a golden period in Ibalong.
Then suddenly, there came a big flood caused by Unos, with terrifying earthquakes. The volcanoes of Hantik, Kulasi and Isarog erupted. Rivers changed their direction and the sea waves rolled high. Destruction was everywhere. Soon, the earth parted, mountains sank, a lake was formed, and many towns in Ibalong were ruined.
Then, appeared the giant Rabot, half-man and half-beast, with awesome and terrifying powers.
People were asking who will fight against Rabot. So, Bantong, the third hero was called. He was a good friend of Handyong. He was ordered to kill the new monster in Ibalong. To do this, he took with him a thousand warriors to attack Rabot’s den. But using his wisdom against Rabot, he did not attack the giant right away. He first observed Rabot’s ways. Looking around the giant’s den, he discovered that there were many rocks surrounding it, and these were the people who were turned into rocks by Rabot.
Bantong also learned that Rabot loved to sleep during the day and stayed awake at night. So, he waited. When Rabot was already sleeping very soundly, Bantong came hear him. He cut the giant into two with his very sharp bolo and without any struggle, Rabot died, So, Ibalong was at peace once more.

Filipinos are known to be a happy people, smiling and laughing in the face of adversary. Now, while the world moves on to a recession, people are flocking, dancing and celebrating the 14th Flower Festival, also known as the Panagbenga, in the city.
http://businessmirror.com.ph/images/stories/Daily_Images/2009/March/03022009/top-pic02.jpg
Panagbenga is the local term for “season of blossoming.” This is said to be the grandest of the Panagbengas, as it is celebrated in the year the city also celebrates its centennial year.
Like every month of February (now encompassing early March), the whole spectrum of the rainbow sparkled in the city in street dances that fused old and new motifs with surprising movements and arrangements that formed flowers and butterflies and fans.
The float parade on Sunday was a carefully chosen ensemble of old and new participants, presenting unique and fresh creations that a collage of flowers can form.
Hall of Famer Baguio Country Club (BCC) opened the spectacular line-up of floats with young ladies in exotic Egyptian costumes, gracefully entertaining the crowd with their seductive belly dance movements. Their float, which sounded off percussions for belly dancing, was a grand garden where atop sat the glistening golden face of an Egyptian idol.
Anthony de Leon, BCC manager and chairman of the Panagbenga Festival, said the float took two weeks to prepare with the mums, everlasting flowers, daisies, roses coming from their very own three nurseries. “We always had our own flower gardens which we expanded with the start of the Flower Festivals 14 years ago,” he said.
Baguio Country Club was followed with a special repeat performance of Mapandan Highschool, which won the first place in the open category of street dancing the day before. Mapandan, with straw skirts as roots of the “pandan” plant, held up poles with pandan-like leaves and formed sunflowers and other flowers with their movements.

Many companies that joined the flower festival used flowers to illustrate what their business is about. Typical is Dunkin’ Donuts, which shaped its products with all the colors of mums and sprinkled them with petals as toppings.
SM Baguio created giant birds with plumes made of dried cogon grass drinking from a fountain formed with everlasting flowers and long stalks of white orchids to make a fountain of water.
The PNP-Baguio came as a pleasant entertainment as it departed from its intimidating image of chasing policemen with batons and guns. Policemen marched down with their float in their friendly Manong and Manang Pulis images dressed in tapis (native woven wrap-around skirt) and ‘g-string’ worn with their shirt uniforms.
PO1 officers gamely posed in g-strings but with complete policemen gear of holsters, guns and nightsticks hanging from the waist.
Say it with flowers
Parade guidelines gave a limit to the space of logos and brand names, which were also mostly embossed on floats with flowers. But companies showed what they were all about by painting their “identities” with fresh flowers.
B-Meg’s façade was the face of a pig out of white mums. Mister Donut shaped their products with all the colors of mums and sprinkled them with petals as toppings.
A perky Greenwich float playing “We Will Rock You,” had a whole ensemble of drums made of white mums, a red guitar of red flowers, cymbals from yellow chrysanthemums. Purefoods made giant hotdogs from red flowers, and Jimm’s Coffee had two giant mugs atop their float from red and apple green florals.
The Saint Louis University College band, dressed in striking blue pants with violet ruffles and cone hats of everlasting flowers got the crowd swaying as their trumpets played the dancing melody of “I Will Survive.”
A first-time visitor from Moriones, Marinduque mocked spectators with their spears and axes, triggering excitement in the crowd. Their float was drawn like a Moriones face, but made from fragile pastel flowers that looked anything but savage.
On the other hand, Abanao Square, a Baguio mall, had two colorful clowns on stilts in a juggling act as a frontliner of their float.
Celebrities
While rival stations ABS-CBN and GMA 7 in the past had their own celebrities on separate floats, this time Valerie Concepcion of ABS-CBN, and Epi Quizon of the teleserye Diosa rode together with Christian Vazquez, GMA7 star, on the M. Lhuillier float, with media people from both stations doing their interviews together. They refused to speak of Kapamilya and Kapuso, but merely announced they were M. Lhuillier stars. This was the float that got the crowd wild, breaching cordons and rushing to the celebrities.
Surf, meanwhile, got cheers from the crowd as stars Kim Chu and Gerald waved to them from the float.
The other of the two Hall of Famers float, Chow King—which in previous parades wowed an audience with its floral carousel—was at the tail of the parade, weaving along the road a complete landscape of a floral garden with a fallen pine tree, a bridge from where underneath flowed a fountain
The sun was gentle and the wind cool for the 25-float parade, but still an ambulance cut through the crowd at least twice to bring fainting spectators to the hospital. The day before, in the street dancing event, elementary kids were overwhelmed by the scorching sun and the fact that the parade lasted from 8 a.m. to around 5 p.m.
While it provided daylong entertainment for tourists who came from as far as Mindanao and foreign countries, many said it was too tiresome for sidewalk viewing. Tourism Undersecretary Oscar Palabyab, who has attended every flower festival, suggested that street parades be cut to a half-day affair so that tourists can spend the rest of the day seeing the other events in the city.
The street parade had 24 participants with a contingent of a hundred per group and a 20-minute-performance limit. Mabini Elementary School won first prize for their category, the Special Arts Section of the City High for this division and for the college category, the University of the Cordillera made it to the Hall of Fame for winning the street dance for three consecutive times.
Tents were pitched at the periphery of the Market Encounter at Burnham Park as hotels were fully booked and homestays made brisk business. The crowd jostled in a tight shoulder to shoulder walk to see the stars, parents pressed babies and youngsters close to them and one had to wriggle a way to exit, but inspite of all these, “ang ganda, wow,” were comments heard from them.
Purificacion Molintas said that at least a million people had come to watch the Panagbenga.
Even the world’s tallest man came just to have fun. The 26-year old Ijaz Ahmed, who stands 8’4’, flew from his home in Punjab, Pakistan to see the much-talked about Panagbenga. A never-ending line of people pressed toward him to have their picture taken with him and dropped coins and bills in a can for donations. He is in the country in hopes of raising money for badly needed medical treatment, and said in earlier interviews he has heard that Filipinos are a kind people.
As the parade closed, structures for booths for the Session Road in Bloom began to be set up, a weeklong event where this main thoroughfare is closed to traffic and all can promenade on the road and enjoy food on sidewalk cafes and buy goods from all parts of the country on display here.
Meanwhile, despite an ordinance saying picking of flowers will be fined P5,000, litter has taken the place of freshly planted blooms. Traffic is horrendous and walking home is a must for many. Jostling has sparked altercations, pickpockets are making a killing, loudspeakers are blasting for parents to pick up their lost kids.
But people are smiling still, forgetting the woes of the world’s economic crisis, just happy with photographs to bring home, stories to tell and memories etched in their hearts of the queen of festivals that the Baguio Panagbenga has come to be called.

BAGUIO CITY, Philippines – Dancing cops? How about cops in G-strings?
A number of “bahag pulis” were the toast of the town Sunday as they participated in the annual Panagbenga Festival in this mountain city in northern Philippines.
The audience, estimated to be at about 150,000, cheered when the “bahag pulis” paraded beside the Transformation Torch float of the Philippine National Police-Cordillera.
"We are testing their acceptance to the community," said former Cordillera Police Chief Superintendent Eugene Martin, who conceptualized the “bahag pulis.”
The “bahag pulis” are members of the Tourist-Oriented Police, Community-Oriented Police (Topcop). The Topcop are the police officers assigned in the tourist areas of the region like Banaue, Sagada and Bontoc.
The float, designed by Martin and assembled entirely of shasta daisies, chrysanthemum, calla lilies and other flowers at the Benguet State University, has a large PNP cap and the transformation torch in front and the Procor seal in the middle.
The transformation program is part of PNP chief Director General Jesus Verzosa's nine-point agenda aimed at professionalizing the police service. - GMANews.TV

By Kristine Servando, abs-cbnNEWS.com | 03/02/2009 2:53 PM
It is always a treat to come home to Baguio City, especially during the Panagbenga season, because there is always something new in store for you. As soon as I hopped on a bus bound for Baguio after work, and saw the long lines of "chance passengers" and the harried ticket sellers, I knew that I wasn't the only one excited to go.
This year, owing to the fact that it is Baguio's Centennial year, the festival drew a record number of people, coming from as far away as Surigao, Mindanao to Vallejo, California (the sister city of Baguio). News reports intially tagged the number of expected guests at 50,000 but it reached 300,000 or more, based on official police estimates. No small wonder that this year's Panagbenga theme is "Our Festival, Yours Too."
My mother tells me that the Panagbenga Flower Festival, a Kankanaey term for "season of blossoming", was conceptualized as a way to help rebuild Baguio after it was shattered by the 1991 earthquake. Sort of a morale boost for the people of Baguio whose lives were shattered as well. Over the years, it has evolved into a tremendous tourist attraction.
I was amazed and overwhelmed by the sheer number of people who squeezed into the sidewalks of Session road (or climbed
on top of buildings), and other roads leading up to Athletic Bowl, where the parades ended, just to get a good view of the the two major parades held over the weekend. People went to great lengths, including waking up at 4 a.m., just to secure a good spot close to the road
All the hotels, inns, and transient houses were full. Anyone who couldn't find any lodgings actually camped in tents at Burnham Park or slept on makeshift beds inside jeepneys or vegetable trucks. Restaurants and shops, especially SM City Baguio, were brimming with people. Street vendors had brisk business, peddling everything from "strawberry taho" to buttered corn to sunglasses to cellphone load to silver jewelry.
In both instances, watching the Streetdance Competition on Saturday and the Float Parade on Sunday, I had to jostle my way through the crowds, angering many people along the way. It was like walking through a big, hot, hostile pool of oatmeal. In all my years growing up in Baguio and visiting during tourist peaks, I have never seen Baguio this full of people.
There were so many people that in the end, local TV networks like ABS-CBN Baguio appealed to viewers to just stay at home and watch the live coverage of the event instead of adding to the already swelling crowd. I have to give all these people credit, though, for braving the intense morning and noon heat and the likely possibility of fainting, just to see a view partially obscured by other people's heads.
The parades were lovely, full of vibrant colored costumes and props that looked wonderful against the clear china blue sky. The streetdancers
were energetic, clad in glittery costumes or body paint, carrying giant paper leaves and sunflowers. Some were dressed in bahags, the native attire, and danced to a chorus of gongs. Even some policemen, who dutifully marshalled the crowd, were wearing bahags along with their police uniform.
The 28 floats were bursting with plants and flowers, mostly Everlasting, in all colors of the rainbow. Marching bands continuously played popular tunes, including the ever-present Panagbenga Festival hymn composed by Macario Fronda. There were even surprise celebrity appearances from Kim Chiu, Gerald Anderson, Ogie Alcasid, Wilma Doesn't, and my favorite, Jollibee.
I interviewed many people in the crowd, both tourists and locals, and many of them said that a glimpse of any of those beautiful performances and flowery floats would make any inconvenience (bruised toes, annoyance, or forgone trips to the bathroom) worth it.
"Maganda, kakaiba sa panangin, nag-enjoy ako sa panonood although medyo masakit, mahirap, maraming tao, eh enjoy parin," said Gilbert dela Cruz from Mindoro, who said it was his first time to watch the Panagbenga parade.
Even with the economic crisis, no expense was spared by participants and organizers to make this year's Flower Fest a memorable one. One of the floats alone reportedly cost more than P200,000. Although some locals noted a slight decline in the number of flowers used in the parade this year, they said they were still impressed by the festivities.
After the crowd dispersed, and the last of the floats was dismantled, I suddenly felt sad about leaving again, because it seemed as if the weekend went by too quickly. The Panagbenga festival and Baguio Centennial celebrations are not over yet though, with a long list of activities on the Tourism Council's itinerary yet to come, including "Session Road in Bloom", a week-long street fair where Session road is closed off from cars, and crowds are free to sample food and souveniers from the region.
I left the city with a feeling of hope and joy that in one hundred years of its existence, and more than fourteen years of Panagbenga Flower Festivals, Baguio never seems to lose the energy to celebrate, even in times of hardship, and make everyone feel welcome. For me, and for many of Baguio's visitors, it always feels like home.

808 state April 21st, 2009, 08:11 AM LC set to join 2009 Aliwan Festival at CCP
- ILOCOS TIMES (http://ilocostimes.com/)
The Multi-awarded Laoag City is set to join the 2009 Aliwan Festival at the Cultural Center of the Philippines in Manila on April 23 to 26. Laoag Mayor Michael V. Fariñas made this announcement after his wife, Laoag City Tourism and Social Concerns Council (LCTSCC) chair Chevylle V. Fariñas confirmed that they are joining the said event. Fariñas stressed that Laoag should join the festival as it is the defending champion in the Best Float category for two years now. Aside from bagging the top prize in the float category, the city also won runners-up honors in the dance competition. Fariñas said the preparation is now on going as the float will be constructed in the third week of April. Laoag delegates are set to leave on April 23.
After the Aliwan Festival, Fariñas said the city would also join the Bangus Festival in Dagupan City in Pangasinan. The mayor further disclosed that the city would also participate in a festival in Santiago City, Isabela after Santiago Mayor Amelita Navarro has requested Laoag’s participation in the said event. In view of this, Fariñas has asked his wife to consider Navarro’s request as he reasoned that attending other city’s festivals could give a big boost to Laoag’s tourism industry. Fariñas has also clarified that the Laoag delegation’s expenses, including accommodation, transportation and food, would be shouldered by the host cities of Dagupan and Santiago. He explained that the two local government units have allocated in their respective budgets their festivals. Ms Fariñas meanwhile disclosed that the city would be participating in all three categories. She said the Ilocos Norte Regional School of Fisheries (INRSF), being the champion in the recent Pamulinawen Festival street pageantry competition, will represent the city in the dance competition while Miss Laoag City 2009 Kate Lao will vie for the Reyna ng Aliwan crown. The city’s entry in the float competition will be Abel-inspired where three women weaving will be shown in the float.
In a related development, the Laoag City Association of Barangay Councils will also be participating in the Aliwan Festival 2009 as this would be in time for their Lakbay Aral. Ms Fariñas said all barangay chairpersons will join the city delegation in the floral parade.

hakz2007 March 6th, 2010, 11:52 AM "No politicians" campaign successful (http://www.pia.gov.ph/?m=12&fi=p100306.htm&no=38&r=car&y=&mo=)
Baguio City (6 March) -- The Baguio Flower Festival executive committee reported that their campaign against political campaigners during the Panagbenga was successful.
BFF chair Anthony de Leon said that the guidelines that they have set for politicians during the Panagbenga grand street and float parade were followed by aspiring candidates in the local and national positions.
In the guidelines set by the organizers, only incumbent officials were allowed to join the parade. But the organizers gave chance for aspiring candidates to join the festivities if they have an official entry in the float parade.
There were several political parties who signified to join the float parade but they did not show up during the parade last Sunday, de Leon said.
De Leon took exemptions of presidential aspirant Senator Richard Gordon and former Baguio mayor and Congressman Bernardo Vergara, now running for congressman, for joining the parade.
De Leon explained that they have officially invited Senator Richard Gordon as one their guests being a former secretary of the Department of Tourism and being the author of the Philippine Tourism Code.
He also defended Vergara saying he is a member of the board of trustee of the BFF Foundation and he is recognized as part of the event which they started together with Congressman Mauricio Domogan 15 years ago.
De Leon added that there was one former mayor who joined the float parade but this was not coordinated by him or his representatives thru the organizers. (PIA)
hakz2007 March 8th, 2010, 10:43 AM Hundred Islands Festival to draw tourists (http://www.pna.gov.ph/index.php?idn=6&sid=&nid=6&rid=263062)
ALAMINOS CITY, March 8 (PNA) -- Preparations are now underway for the Gali’La Hundred Islands Festival 2010 slated from March 13 to 23, this year.
Expected to draw local and foreign tourists, the festival will kick off along the main thoroughfares in the city’s central business district, and in the city’s pride -- the world famous Hundred Islands National Park.
With the theme “Kilos Alaminos, Tuloy ang Asenso”, the festival will showcase once more the city’s rich culture, colorful traditions and unique arts handed down from one generation to another.
City Councilor Carolyn Dizon-Sison, chairperson of the city fiesta steering committee, said the culture and tourism-based festival coincides with the city fiesta in honor of the feast of the city’s patron saint, St. Joseph - the Carpenter.
The celebration starts with the Golden Jubilee and Grand Alumni Homecoming of the Saint Joseph Cathedral School (SJCS)-Colegio San Jose de Alaminos, formerly known as Royal Carpenter Academy (RCA).
Candidates for Miss Alaminos City 2010 and Little Mr. and Miss Hundred Islands 2010 will take center stage at the Don Leopoldo Sison Auditorium (DLSA) on March 14 and 15, respectively.
Mayor Hernani A. Braganza and Vice Mayor Teofilo G. Humilde Jr. will lead the launching of Agri-Trade Fair and the formal opening and blessing of the E-Kawayan Building in Barangay Bolaney on March 16.
Father Jerry Orbos will officiate a recollection and holy mass at the Saint Joseph Cathedral Parish on the 17th at exactly 5 p.m., followed by the Alaminos Central School Grand Alumni Homecoming in the evening.
Art lovers, camera buffs and spectators alike can view the best art works and masterpieces of top notch artists and famous photographers on display at the City Hall Lobby starting on March 18.
Also on the 18th will be the Donor’s Forum at Islandia Hotel and the SJC Parish Night at DLSA.
The following day will be the Feast of Saint Joseph where a thanksgiving mass and the Viva San Jose civic, military parade will be held in the morning, a "Larong Lahi" in the afternoon and in the evening, there will the Balikbayan and NGO (Non-Government Organization) night.
The most anticipated nightly Peoples’ (street) Party is set on March 19 to 22.
Barangay folks and senior citizens, transport and vendors group will have their special day on March 20 which is highlighted by the "Talaba Ihaw-ihaw" Festival at 5 p.m.
The Hundred Islands Fun Run, Rock-rackan 2010 mountain bike challenge and the 5th Hundred Islands Chess Tournament will also be held on that day.
On March 21, the best Balikbayan cagers and hoopsters from the local government unit will play in friendly basketball match followed by the children’s magical experience. In the evening, it will be the Grand Ball and Coronation Night at DLSA.
A Night to Remember of Fun and Laughter, sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Hundred Islands, and Fireworks Display will be on the 22nd starting at 7 o’clock in the evening.
On March 23, balikbayans, tourists and prospective tourists will be treated with a whole day of eco-adventure tour and Luau Party for a Cause at the Hundred Islands.
Capping the 11-day festivity is the district-wide Family Trade House Singing Contest Year 16 on the 23rd of the month. (PNA)

hakz2007 March 20th, 2010, 02:46 AM DOT hails Dagupan Bangus Festival as RP's biggest street party today
DAGUPAN CITY, March 19 (PNA)--The Department of Tourism (DOT) has vowed its full support to the Dagupan City Bangus Festival which it affirmed to be the biggest street party in the Philippines today.
This was disclosed by DOT Undersecretary Oscar Palabyab who held a press conference at Bay View Hotel in Manila on Thursday to announce that DOT is committed to support the 9th Dagupan Bangus Festival to be again chaired by Vice Mayor Belen Fernandez.
Fernandez, along with DOT Regional Director Martin Valera, attended the press conference, joined by some 50 travel writers from various newspapers and magazines in the country and of the world.
The DOT issued its acclamation that the Bangus Festival is now the country’s biggest street party because of the size of the crowd that joined last year’s street party held at the Jose R. de Venecia Expressway Extension, numbering some 700,000.
Vice Mayor Fernandez said she anticipates an additional 30 percent people coming to participate in the Bangusan Street Party set on the night of April 30 on a 2.6 kilometer stretch of Jose R. de Venecia Expressway Extension.
Palabyab praised the Bangus Festival for having succeeded in binding together the local government and private sectors in a common effort to put up a festival that will distinguish and promote their city and product to the whole world.
He said he was at the Bangus Festival when Dagupan bagged the world’s longest barbecue grill in the Guinness Book of World Record.
The DOT officials called on neighboring towns of Pangasinan not to feel jealous if DOT is focusing much attention to Dagupan because the success of the Dagupan Bangus Festival is also shared by other adjacent places.
He called on the travel writers to provide proper information about the Dagupan Bangus Festival not only because it is the biggest happening in the Philippines this summer but also because of much time and energy poured in the preparation by the joint local government and private sectors.
A 45-minute audio visual presentation about the 2009 Bangus Festival was presented.
For his part, DOT Regional Director Valera noted that each year, for the past five years, the Bangus Festival had grown better and bigger.
“From a mere celebration of the city to promote its most important product (bangus), it has grown into something like an icon which we in the Ilocos Region “had always looked forward to participate”.
Valera, who had been in the Bangus Festival five times, said the festival has now evolved as the biggest street party in the Philippines.
“Our USEC is with us to promote the biggest street party in the Philippines,” Valera told the travel writers.
In an interview shortly after the press conference, Palabyab said he is quiet impressed with the new developments being introduced by the city government in the Bangus Festival which, he said, “is in accordance with the things we would like to see in any kind of festival”.
Vice Mayor Fernandez said during the press conference that while the festival was meant to thank the Almighty for showering the fishermen with bountiful harvest year-round, it was also designed to perk up the local industry and allied businesses.
That is why, incorporated in the coming Bangus Festival, was the "Treasure of the North" which showcases the "One Town, One Product” of Regions 1, 2 and 3; the Great Dagupan Day Sale”, “Pigar-Pigar Festival”, “Halo-Halo sa Malamig Festival”, “Bangus Rodeo”, Cookfest and others.
“This is what we call the festivals of economics which means that they (in Dagupan) are not only holding festivals but also putting some objectives which could benefit the whole community.
Saying the DOT is very happy to see the festival, Palabyab noted that even the DTI and people from other regions and provinces are joining.
The “Festivals of the North”, where about 15 top street dancers will participate, will feature the best-of-the-best in street dancing and choreography in Pangasinan and the Ilocos as well as Pampanga and Zambales.
Palabyab noted that after nine years, the Bangus Festival already matured into one big festival and whatever will happen, this will not shrink any more”.
“There is no turning back. Hindi na liliit ito”, he said.
Palabyan added that said since it first started in 2002, the Bangus Festival has been incorporated in the tourism calendar in the entire country.
As compared to the Panagbenga Festival in Baguio, the Bangus Festival has a greater advantage because of space.
On the other hand, Varela praised the Bangus Festival for its unique character, being put up jointly by public and private resource, which makes it very unique.
Asked on his impression about the Bangusan Street Party, he said: “Oh Boy, its big”.
He, however suggested better crowd management in the Bangusan Street Party, to provide the people some ingress and egress. (PNA)

Discover Laoag and the Pamulinawen Festival 2011 (http://festivalsinthephilippines.com/discover-laoag-and-the-pamulinawen-festival-2011-1316370.html)
Laoag City has considered its tourism as an economic resource, hence creating its way to newly established commercial businesses and infrastructure progressions. The Ilocos Norte government is already expecting the boost of the industry of tourism here, thus the construction of their multi-million dollar convention center as well as hotel meeting the demands of the industry. This year, one of the highlighted events is the Pamulinawen Festival 2011.
This event is held in the city of Laoag starting from February 2 to 11 in commemoration of the feast day of Saint William the Hermit, the patron saints of Ilocos Norte. This is also the recognition of Laoag City’s foundation highlighted by colorful floral along with dance parade around the city.
This Laoag City fiesta’s final celebration is held on 11 of February to offer thanksgiving and honor the patron saints wherein the people of Laoag believed with the intercession to the Creator this place has been receiving blessing and spared the disasters and calamities.
While tourists are enjoying their vacation to Laoag and witnessing the Pamulinawen Festival, they can also visit some of the ancient stunning history of this place that include St. William Cathedral, The Sinking Bell Tower, the Tobacco Monopoly Monument, the Capitol of Ilocos Norte, the Fort Ilocandia Resort and Hotel, the Bangui Windmills and the Ilocos Lighthouse. In addition to these remarkable tourist destinations, there are also modern places of traditional vacation spots, which include Pagudpud White Sand Beaches, La Paz Sand Dunes, and their 18-hole Golf Course that is designed by Gary Player.
Of course, no place in Philippines would be complete devoid of its individual festivals that include the popular Pamulinawen Festival of Laoag City this coming February. Moreover, an added event here is the December Festival involving lantern competitions and parades. These two festivals truly create the city of Laoag an excellent place to visit.
Similar to any other province in Philippines, Pamalinawen Festival 2011 and the fiesta of the city are among the much-anticipated events in this place this year.

The Market Encounter and Landscaping exhibit at the Jose Abad Santos Drive, Burnham Park and Barangay beautification and landscaping contest starts on the same date, Feb. 1, and ends on March 6.
Mayor Domogan expressed hopes that with the support of the community, the 2011 government-led Baguio Flower Festival would be more improved and more memorable as compared to those in the past.
Authentic dance numbers are expected during the streetdancing exhibition with the synchronized enhancement seminars conducted since last year for dance trainors and choreographers. The six Cordillera provinces shall be represented by contingents wearing costumes and performing corresponding dance steps, hand movements and over-all choreography with the ethnicized Panagbenga hymn. The addition of gongs and the solibao to the Panagbenga hymn is authorized by composer Dean Macario Fronda of Saint Louis University, it was learned.

Local artists have also their own events: Ipitik, a wine brewing and tasting contest, as with a wood carving contest.
Contingents from other areas, such as La Union and Pangasinan have also signified their intentions of joining the flower festival.
According to the mayor, every effort is centered on the theme of the 16th staging of the Panagbenga, “The Environment and Community in Harmony.”
Seedlings shall also be distributed to the Panagbenga Board of Trustees and later to barangay officials for planting on available spaces.

hugodiekonig April 26th, 2011, 03:35 AM Marinduqueños were able to carve for their province a unique religio-cultural identity that merits international promotion as a premier Lenten destination. Mr. Darin Rogers and other tourists from USA that we interviewed said that they came to know about Moriones Festival through the Lonely Planet.
The Marinduque Senakulo in Boac, supported by the provincial government, is composed of three parts--the Old Testament, the New Testament, and the Beheading of Longinus. In the last episode of "Senakulo," which was about the character of Longinus, the actor interacted with the audience telling them emphatically that Christ rouse from the dead--true to the objective of this type of activities during Lent since the Spanish era, teaching the people about the Christian faith.

Obando Bulacan
One of the country’s most popular Maytime festivals is the fertility fiesta in Obando, popularly known as the Kasilonawan Festival, attended every year by busloads of local and foreign tourists who come as observers and participants. People from all parts of the world come to Obando to seek divine help in getting pregnant and in finding the right mate.
The unique lure of the Kasilonawan is the hope it gives to childless couples. Held every year from May 17 to May 19, it is highlighted by the pandanggo dance of childless couples to the tune of Santa Clarang Pinong Pino. The dance-prayer is a ritual dedicated to Santa Clara, the patron saint of infanticipating mothers.
The two other patron saints of Obando are San Pascual Baylon, who is said to help unmarried individuals find their ideal mate; and Nuestra Senora de Salambao, protector of fishermen and farmers.
Obando’s fertility rites date back to pre-Spanish times when it was organized by a priestess called Kataloran. The rites were performed in the house of the datu or barangay chieftain.
Fertility rites were resorted to because being barren or childless was considered a disgrace in the old days.
The town of Obando was established by Gobernador Jose Francisco de Obando y Solis on May 14, 1753.

As part of positioning Binmaley Pangasinan as the“Seafood Capital of the North”, the town holds a grand fiesta named as the SIGAY FESTIVAL. “Sigay” is a Pangasinan dialect word which means to harvest. This event is celebrated annually to give tribute to the aquaculture industry of the town, which is the number one source of livelihood of the community of Binmaley.
This year, Sigay Festival starts from January 20 – February 3. Like last year, lots of enjoyable activities are prepared to entertain townspeople and visitors. And to secure people’s health, they added Medical and Surgical Mission in the event schedule that will slated on January 24, 2012 – 8am.
