DPWH to help in solving flooding in Tudela and Clarin

TUDELA, Misamis Occidental, Feb. 20 (PIA) -- Even if their concern is only the national highways and bridges, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is always ready to extend technical help in finding solutions to the problem of flooding in Tudela and Clarin.

This assurance came from Engr. Dario Pusod, district engineer of the Second Engineering District of Mis. Occ., who said the DPWH infrastructure in the area were also affected by the flooding in both towns.

The district engineer pointed out that the recent flooding in the area had almost destroyed the foundation of a bridge in Tudela because of the debris that piled up under the structure brought about by the floods.

“Without hesitation, we could say that ‘suman sa Clarin’ is our culture, our future!”

Such claim is made by the suman makers here, who said suman making has been their means of livelihood and has been synonymous to the place through time, making suman as one of the top 10 most popular “pasalubong ng bayan” throughout the Philippines.

Suman has been identified as the local government unit’s (LGU) One-Town, One-Product (OTOP), and part of its development and promotion efforts was the creation of the Clarin Suman Task Force (CLASTAF) that mandated the establishment of the House of Suman and Pasalubong Center (HSPC).

The HSPC was built to position the municipality as the suman capital of the province, gaining additional market for the suman makers and improving marketing capability though increase in production volume, quality assurance, market information and promotion, and institutional development.

Mayor David M. Navarro said in 2008 that the LGU decided to purchase a lot for the HSPC, which was realized on Jan. 5, 2009, when it was constructed out of the LGU’s 20% development fund.

Collaboration with the other government agencies had also been made to augment its capital for business operation, with the LGU providing livelihood assistance to the town’s suman makers.

The mayor said the Department of Trade and Industry improved the labeling and packaging techniques while the Department of Science and Technology was concerned more of the suman’s shelf life.

The Department of Tourism took charge of its promotion while the Department of Agriculture provided funds for the establishment of the SUMAN Production Center.

The Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) has bestowed recognition to 14 partner-employers and collecting banks and agents in Northern Mindanao for their valuable contribution to the success of the National Health Insurance Program, during the awarding rites held today at the Pearlmont Inn, Cagayan De Oro City.

Maria Rhodella Pare, head of the PhilHealth-X Management Services Division, said the awarding aims to give credit to accredited collecting agents and banks who provided avenue to which PhilHealth members may conveniently pay their premiums and to employers who dutifully remitted and reported the contributions of their respective employees to ensure the viability of the social health insurance fund.

Recognized as best collecting banks for the year 2011 were Philippine Postal Savings Bank in Cagayan de Oro area, Bank of Commerce, Maramag Branch in Bukidnon area, Philippine National Bank, Gingoog Branch in Misamis Oriental area, and China Banking Corporation, Iligan and Ozamiz branches in Lanao del Norte and Misamis Occidental areas, respectively.

On the other hand, the five employers awarded as Best Employers for 2011 were C-One Trading Corporation of Cagayan de Oro, Dole Philippines, Inc. – Stanfilco of Bukidnon, Iligan Medical Center College, Inc., Integrated Port Services of Ozamiz, and the City Government of Gingoog.

Meanwhile, the One Network Bank in Ozamiz City was conferred as the Best Collecting Rural Bank, the local government of Kibawe was the Best Collecting Local Government Unit, and the Universal Storefront Services Corporation in Tagoloan as the Top Non-Bank Collecting Agent in the region for the year 2011.

He said every time there is heavy rain, water overflows at the Paca Irrigation Dam, which is under the National Irrigation Administration (NIA).

Tangub City celebrates 44th charter anniversary

TANGUB CITY, Misamis Occidental, Feb. 24 (PIA) -- The last week of February is a very historic and important for Tangub City because of the several celebrations.

The first is on Feb. 21, 2012, which is the 28th foundation anniversary of the city-owned Gov. Alfonso D. Tan College (GADTC); Feb. 26th is the 5th year of Intercollegiate Games (IGC) celebration between GADTC and the state-owned Northwestern Mindanao State College of Science and Technology; and Feb. 28 is the 4th Alfonso D. Tan Memorial Lecture, a gathering of city officials, school heads and students taking history subjects from both colleges.

Activities lined up for these celebrations are the highlight of the 44th anniversary of the creation of Tangub City, Mayor Philip Tan said.

By virtue of Republic Act 5131, Tangub City became the 50th city of the Philippines on June 17, 1967, but was officially inaugurated on February 28, 1968. Since then, the city anniversary is celebrated every 28 of February.

OROQUIETA CITY, Misamis Occidental, Feb. 24 (PIA) -- Another batch of assorted medicines and medical supplies was given by the Children’s International Philippines Inc., (CIPI) to the provincial government of Misamis Occidental.

Governor Herminia M. Ramiro said these items were divided and given to the eight public hospitals in the province to be used by the indigent patients who will be brought to their hospitals.

Together with the hospital supplies in-charge, the governor thanked CIPI since it no longer easy to request for medicines considering the very long process of procurement from the concerned offices of the Provincial Capitol, because it has also to pass the bidding process.

Tangub City releases cultural heritage map

TANGUB CITY-- At least 45 persons were awarded certificates of recognition by the Tangub City Historical Commission (TCHC) for their efforts in coming up with the culture heritage map of the city. General Commissioner Narcissa A. Naron of the TCHC said these cultural mappers conducted interviews and gathered data for the maps of the city's 55 barangays which were divided into ten clusters. Among the data included in the TCHC cultural heritage mapping forms are the following: name of town or city, the town's other names, date the city was founded, Land area and boundaries. It also includes natural heritage facts such as: the oldest tree alive, its common and scientific name, description and habitat and those of other trees, plants, minerals, birds, animals and insects

MANILA, Philippines -- Former Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri said Mindanao will be plunged into darkness within five weeks unless the government does something to fix the power supply deficit there.

In a letter to Energy Secretary Jose Almendras, the Bukidnon native said many parts of Mindanao are now experiencing two- to four-hour brownouts daily.
He said these “could worsen into power outages of up to eight hours by April, on account of increased demand associated with the summer season.”

Using a report by the National Grid Corp., he said Mindanao has a deficit of 67 megawatts (MW) based on the available generating capacity of 1,159 MW against the system peak demand of 1,226 MW.

"However, references to menacing brownouts of up eight hours daily by April imply a real supply deficit of roughly 21.8 percent, or 268 MW, without counting the 25 percent allowance required for Mindanao to enjoy gross power reserves that match those of Luzon and the Visayas," Zubiri said.

To solve the problem, he asked for the temporary deployment of additional power barges in Mindanao.
