What's wrong with the power supply these days? Is Maria Cristina low in water again? I thought it has been raining for the past weeks. CFL bulbs are good power savers, but you know, like any other power saving investment, it is costly from the start. Also, people used to bright incandescent bulbs may find the CFL less brighter, so it all depends on your needs and where to prioritized. Even here in North America, the price is more than half of that typical bulb which is easy to produce.

What's wrong with the power supply these days? Is Maria Cristina low in water again? I thought it has been raining for the past weeks. CFL bulbs are good power savers, but you know, like any other power saving investment, it is costly from the start. Also, people used to bright incandescent bulbs may find the CFL less brighter, so it all depends on your needs and where to prioritized. Even here in North America, the price is more than half of that typical bulb which is easy to produce.

Contributions of Former Governor Alfonso D. Tan in Tangub City

Tangub City has honored the contribution of Governor Alfonso D. Tan whose efforts led to the development of the city to what it is now.

Tan was the City Mayor of Tangub when he was appointed Governor of Misamis Occidental by the late President Corazon C. Aquino, who assumed the Presidency after the EDSA Revolution in 1986.

“It has always been a puzzle to me how the former governor was able to run Tangub after it became a city, at a time when there was no Internal Revenue Allotment that the city received from the national government during his time,” Mayor Philip Tan said.

Mayor Philip was amazed at how his uncle, the former governor, was able to convince the people in Tangub to donate their lands to the city government to be converted into city roads, which at present, he has problems on how to cement them because of their width.

Another contribution of the former governor was in the field of education which has benefitted the children by putting up elementary schools in all of the city’s 55 barangays.

The former governor was also credited for his concern to educate the youth by giving out scholarship programs and putting up of the city-owned Gov. Alfonso D. Tan College (GADTC) which celebrated its 28th foundation anniversary, last Feb. 28.

Raul T. Concepcion, chairman of leading appliance manufacturer Concepcion Industries Inc., said he received reports from their provincial offices in Cebu, Cagayan de Oro and Davao that these areas had been suffering daily brownouts.

“I realize that the local government units and other government agencies are still conducting relief and search operations in these areas. However, summer is fast approaching and the brownouts situation might worsen if government does not move fast in this regard,” Concepcion said.

Former senator Miguel Zubiri also expressed alarm over the current two to four-hour daily brownouts in many parts of Mindanao, which he said, “could worsen into power outages of up to eight hours by April, on account of increased demand associated with the summer season.”

A report by the National Grid Corporation showed that as of February 24, Mindanao has a deficit of 67 megawatts (MWs) based on available generating capacity of 1,159 MWs versus system peak demand of 1,226 MWs.

Luzon has gross power reserves of 22.3 percent or 1,456 MWs with available capacity of 7,991 MWs versus system peak demand of 6,535 MWs.

The Visayas has gross power reserves of 27.8 percent, or 376 MWs with available capacity of 1,727 MWs versus system peak demand of 1,351 MWs.

Zubiri earlier warned of “catastrophic brownouts” in Mindanao unless the government moves fast enough to address the power shortage.

“The people of Mindanao find it increasingly burdensome to carry out our daily household and business activities, let alone grow our employment-generating industries, in light of the highly disruptive power outages,” he said.

The former senator proposed the use of the renewable energy trust fund to grant incentives to entities prepared to install and deliver new biomass, solar, wind, hydro, geothermal and/or ocean power supplies, exclusively for Mindanao, in six to 18 months.

OROQUIETA City--Investors now starts pouring in the City of Good Life, as industry in tourism and shipping are now busy processing their business papers to start business.
This happens after the city government created a trade mission headed by the City Economic Enterprise and Development Office and the chairman of the Sangguniang Panlungsod committee on trade commerce and industry.
Late last week, Mayor Jason Paredes Almonte together with his Team One Oroquieta organized the trade mission to invite investors from Cebu City to put up their respective businesses in the city.
Three shipping companies are eager to establish their businesses.
In 2004, two ports were rehabilitated through a memorandum of agreement with the Philippine Ports Authority that the local government will be administering the operations, the Manuel L. Quezon Fish Port and the San Vicente Bajo Port that costs the city government millions just to rehabilitate and ultimately made the two ports operational.
Last week, SP Member Vincent Guantero, who heads the SP Committee on Trade, Commerce and Industry, reported to the city mayor that their mission was successful.
Guantero said the Ocean Fast Ferries Corporation (Ocean Jet) has signified its intention to operate in the city.
The Ocean Jet is now in the process of getting the needed papers with the city government and Marina (Maritime Industry Authority).
Ocean Jet will be pioneering the Oroquieta-Iligan City route of its fast crafts and additionally the company will be fielding their LST Barges to cater cargoes and other products that need sea transport.


The other two shipping companies that signified its interest to put up Ro-ro (Roll-on/roll-off) business in Oroquieta City are the Lite and Roble Shipping Companies. But these two shipping companies need a ramp for their Ro-ro ships.


As this development, Almonte asked the local port authority to fast track the construction of the port's ramps.
Meanwhile, in the tourism industry, Golden Viaje Travel and Tours, owned by Ma. Paz Gendrala will be opening a branch office to cater travel and tours promotion in the city to help promote tourism potential destinations of Misamis Occidental.


Dubbed as "Misamis Occidental Escapades "the travel and tours package will be promoting tourism destination from Ozamis City down to the municipality of Baliangao, Sapang Dalaga, Jimenez, Clarin, Calamba and Oroquieta City.
"Especially with our under construction 1.2 km Zip Line, Oroquieta City may become the next travel hub of Misamis Occidental." Almonte proudly explained to the Mindanao Daily.

Aquamarine park posts P6.53-M income in 2011, expects to double this year

SINACABAN, Misamis Occidental, Mar. 6 (PIA) -- Prospects are high that the Misamis Occidental Aquamarine Park (MOAP) located in Barangay Libertad Bajo here will double this year, with its 2011 income of P6.53 million.

This is the assessment of Manolito V. Yap, project manager of MOAP, who said that the bookings for their function rooms and dormitories have started early for 2012 compared to last year, when the bookings were made only after the renovations of some of it facilities were completed after the first quarter of the year.

The park consists of fish hatcheries, and houses a mini zoo and the entrance to Dolphin Island, which serves as the rehabilitation center for bottle-nosed dolphins that are washed ashore and those which seek shelter from fishermen.

Owned by the Misamis Occidental provincial government, MOAP is described as a tangible manifestation of its vision to promote aquamarine production, environmental protection, and ecotourism, geared towards the provision of livelihood opportunities to the Misamisnons.

The project was started by then Governor Leo Loreto S. Ocampos, who is now the Congressman of the 2nd District of the province supported by then Congresswoman Herminia M. Ramiro of the said district, who is now the governor of Misamis Occidental.

It also gained financial support from Sen. Francis Pangilinan and then Senators Aquilino Q. Pimentel, Jr. and Richard Gordon, the Secretary of the Department of Tourism when the MOAP was opened to the public.

Member of Alferez organized crime group nabbed

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, March 5 -- Combined forces of the Misamis Occidental Police Provincial Office and Joint Task Force Panguil arrested suspect Rommel Alferez, who allegedly has a pending arrest warrant for the crime of carnapping issued by Judge Alan Flores, Regional Trial Court (RTC) of the 12th Judicial Regional Region, Branch 7, Tubod, Lanao del Norte, after he was sighted inside the cockfighting arena in Barangay 6, Tangub City, Feb. 25.

Tangub City Police Chief, PSupt. Elias Hampac said the Police Anti-Carnapping Emergency Response (PACER) team based in Iligan City is looking into the suspect’s possible involvement of other crimes committed in Metro Manila.

Rommel was frisked after the lawful arrest, resulting in the confiscation of an illegally possessed 0.45 caliber pistol and ammunitions.

PSupt. Hampac added that Rommel is the uncle of Jojo Alferez, whom he and his police personnel encountered last Dec. 7 in a shootout that resulted in the wounding and arrest of Nelson Balos. PSupt. Hampac was likewise hit in his right shoulder.

The Alferez Organized Crime Group is believed to be operating in Cagayan de Oro, Pagadian, Dipolog and other neighboring cities. Their members are also linked to many criminal activities in Cebu and Metro Manila. (EOR/RFMC-PRO/PIA 10)

Tangub city receives Seal of Good Housekeeping Award from DIlG

TANGUB CITY, Misamis Occidental, March 4 (PIA) -- The Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) has awarded the Seal of Good Housekeeping (SGH) to Tangub City for 2011.

The award was given after the city government was able to follow the guidelines set by the DILG in the implementation of the open disclosure policy in tax collection and Sound Fiscal Management in the use of public funds.

Along with the SGH Award was the cash amount of P3 million, which has helped the city so much in adding up to its development projects.

Meanwhile, Mayor Philip Tan thanked Governor Herminia M. Ramiro, on the occasion of the city’s 44th Charter Anniversary, recently, for the financial subsidy that Tangub received during her administration.

The Mayor also acknowledged the help of the Governor and the Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP), headed by Vice-Governor Henry Oaminal for their continued support for development projects of the city.

BIR intensifies tax campaign in Misamis Occidental

OZAMIZ CITY, Misamis Occidental, March 7 (PIA) -- The Revenue District Office 100 (RDO-100) of the Bureau of Internal Revenue here has intensified its campaign to pay the annual income taxes for 2011.

Such campaign aims to remind the tax payers in the province to pay their obligation for the year 2011, during the first quarter of the year, which also coincide with the renewal of business registrations, Atty. Maria M. Alfonso, Revenue District Officer said.

Alfonso hopes RDO-100 will be able to achieve this year’s tax goal with the full cooperation and support of the tax payers.

The campaign started with a motorcade around the main thoroughfare of the city recently after which, a ceremonial signing of the pledge of support by the tax payers took place.
