buknit October 19th, 2010, 05:15 PM Misamis Occidental 81st Years : 1st Pas’ungko Festival 2010
G6jX1AfOjiI
Oroquieta City – In the Subanen word, Pas’ungko means great Thanks to the Almighty. It is the time of good tidings especially after harvest or “pasasalamat” to all what had God given to the community.
Today as it celebrates its 81st Founding years, Governor Herminia D. Ramiro who led the provincial government with her, GO! HERMIE agenda, Misamis Occidental and beyond has to go a long way to achieve its dream and aspiration.
Like any tribe, Misamis Occidental wants to be in the map of Economics, Trade and Industry, Tourism, Agriculture, protection of the Environment, Peace and Order and other development for a province to be progressive and well develop.
With the celebration of the 1st ever Pas’ungko Festival, Misamis Occidental focuses on its tourism potential and destination, promotion of its One Town, One Product program, a government initiative to promote farm produce, food and delicacies, native products of a place, a town or a province is one way to achieve its progress.
This, the Provincial Tourism Council was re-organized and re-activated to work for the implementation of such project and hopes to be known not only in Northern Mindanao but to the whole country or in the international community. With the PTC now in its prime year of service to the province, the 1st Pas’ungko Festival will be the name of the game.
With the participation of the three cities and its 14 towns, Misamis Occidental with its new innovation, modern technology adaptation, and economy triggered development and good governance to achieve peace and order will be in the map again of progressive and develop provinces of the country.
Historically, Misamis Occidental is a province of the Philippines located in the Northern Mindanao region. Its capital city is Oroquieta. The province borders Zamboanga del Norte and Zamboanga del Sur to the west and is separated from Lanao del Norte by Panguil Bay to the south and from Misamis Oriental by Iligan Bay to the east.
The province of Misamis was originally inhabited by Subanens who’s an easy target by the sea pirates from Lanao. Misamis is taken from the early settlement of the Spaniards at the entrance to the Panguil Bay.
The name "Misamis" is believed to have been derived from the Subanen word "Kuyamis" which is a variety of sweeto coconut - the staple food of the early settlers in this place. During the years the name persisted as an inference of the geographical location and upon the advent of the Spanish settlers, the word "kuyamis" easily gave way to the more convenient pronounceable but corrupted word "Misamis”.
Misamis Occidental comprised the original nine towns of Baliangao, Lopez Jaena, Tudela, Clarin, Plaridel, Oroquieta, Aloran, Jimenez, and Misamis. The original nine municipalities of the province of Misamis Occidental grew into the present three cities of Ozamiz, Oroquieta, and Tangub and the 14 municipalities of Aloran, Baliangao, Bonifacio, Calamba, Clarin, Concepcion, Don Victoriano, Jimenez, Lopez Jaena, Pana-on, Plaridel, Sapang Dalaga, Sinacaban, and Tudela
Misamis Occidental is located near the narrow strip of land linking Northwestern Mindanao, to the North-central part of the island. Shaped like a collapsible fan it is bounded on the northeast by the Mindanao Sea, east by the Iligan Bay, southeast by the Panguil Bay, and the west by the Zamboanga del Norte and Sur. The fact that three of its boundaries are bodies of water gives away water life as one of its natural resources and fishing as one of its main industries. Except along the coastal area, hilly and rolling land characterized the provincial terrain. Towards the western border, the terrain is particularly rugged.
The dense population along the coast consists mainly of migrants from Cebu, Siquijor and Bohol, thus the major dialects are Cebuano and Boholano. The native Subanens live in the interior uplands.
The province economy depends firstly on fishing, secondly on coconuts, thirdly on rice. The province has 169 kilometers of coastline fronting the rich fishing grounds of Panguil and Iligan bays. It also has the biggest area of brackish-water fishponds in the region.
Tangub City is a fishing port on Panguil Bay famous for seafood’s. Coconut is the chief crop. This is processed into oil, desiccated coconut, and coir, most of which are shipped to Cebu. Coconut processing is one of the main industry in Oroquieta City. Other crops grown are rice, corn, abaca, coffee, cacao and rubber. Meanwhile, Ozamiz City is the commercial center of Misamis Occidental.
With Governor Herminia Ramiro’s leadership, Misamis Occidental is not far from over, with her agenda and the support of its people, the Misamisnons, the second largest province of Northern Mindanao is the next economic tiger of Mindanao.

Now I know there was a mistake here. Somehow, ABS-CBN misquoted the Airphils spokesperson. Legaspi and Tagbilaran will be serve by A320's from Manila while Catarman and Ozamiz will have the q400's to and from Cebu, and those are the new routes!

By Ryan D. Rosauro
OZAMIS CITY -- What difference does a single letter make?
If one talks about the correct spelling of this city's official name, that brings one back to an acrimonious debate over half-a-century ago that centered on whether or not to rename one of northwestern Mindanao's oldest and historic towns to give honor to a dedicated public official and Second World War hero.
Almost 57 years after, residents here have yet to agree on whether to spell Ozamiz or Ozamis when referring to its official name.
Since 2001, the local government uses "Ozamiz" as reflected in its letterheads and official documents.
The explanation for such usage is that the city was named after the late senator Jose Ozamiz, a hero in the Second World War.
However, prior to 2001, the local government uses "Ozamis." Many National Government agencies and private establishments continue to do so until today.
Confusion is more evident in the webpage of the local Catholic Church that adopts "Ozamis" when referring to the archdiocese. But it gives its address as in the city of "Ozamiz."
Spelling confusion
Even the news media, with its penchant for spelling accuracy of proper nouns, are at a loss on usage.
However, "Ozamiz" gained currency obviously taking cue of the local government's explanation.
Not only is the spelling confusion a recent phenomenon. Even during the city's infancy period, the then Philippine News Service (PNS) and the Davao City-based Mindanao Times that maintained a Misamis Occidental Bureau then, interchangeably uses "Ozamiz" and "Ozamis."
But based on Republic Act (RA) 321, the law that gives the city its charter that took effect July 16, 1948, the correct spelling should be "Ozamis."
Surprisingly, RA 321 decreed the renaming of the old town of Misamis to give honor to the late senator Ozamiz.
The spelling confusion is fuelled by lack of local awareness of RA 321, and more importantly, the lack of plausible explanation why the last letter in the late senator's surname was dropped and changed to letter "s."
Resty Acapulco, an elder, considers the "misspelling" as just typographical error committed by the Bureau of Printing.
Jose Ozamis
However, former City Administrator Antonio Lago Sr. argues the "misspelling" was deliberate in order to put to rest the acrimony between what can be called "preservationists" and the proponents of renaming then Misamis town in honor of senator Ozamiz.
Accounts related by the late Gonzalo Rosauro II, a local history enthusiast who bore witness to the debates then, supported Lago's view.
The spelling "glitch" aside, this city principally derives its name from Japanese resistance hero Jose Ozamiz.
An Ateneo-educated lawyer, Ozamiz holds the distinction of being the lone Misamis Occidental politician to have captured a Senate seat.
He served the province as its first governor, delegate in framing the 1935 Constitution, then senator in 1940.
During the Second World War, Ozamiz played an active role in the guerrilla movement. On February 11, 1944, Japanese soldiers arrested him in Manila following a trip in Mindanao.
He was detained in Intramuros and later executed along with 29 other guerrilla leaders in La Loma.
Their bodies were discovered in a mass grave some two years after. Doctors identified Ozamiz through his denture. (To be continued)

By Ryan D. Rosauro
(Conclusion)
IN A measure to further the remembrance of Ozamiz, Congress passed Republic Act 6738 in 1988, during his birth centenary, declaring May 5 of every year as Ozamiz Day throughout Misamis Occidental province.
Originally, the plan was to rename the entire Misamis Occidental province in honor of Ozamiz.
But widespread resistance by local leaders led proponents to instead consider having the province's queen locality as the hero's name-bearer. And that was Misamis town.
According to Rosauro, the proposition met an even greater resistance from locals who argued the preservation of the town's name as it has very deep historical roots.
Misamis is the province's oldest known settlement. One tale traces its name from the indigenous Subanen people's expression "Misa, misa" that referred to their going to or coming from mass officiated by Spanish friars who have been on Christianization mission in the Zamboanga Peninsula beginning in the early 17th century.
According to another tale, its name is derived from the word "Kuyamis," an indigenous variety of coconut.
In the mid-18th century, a garrison, which remained to this day, was constructed
here and the town served as launching pad of Spanish military conquest and further Christianization activities in the northwestern Mindanao region.
Rosauro recalled that during public consultations, the "preservationists" also averred that it should be Jimenez town where Ozamis is a resident, which must be his name-bearer.
As a compromise, an idea cropped up to combine the words Ozamis and Misamis in order to encapsulate into the impending city's name the equally important considerations that are the root of the acrimonious debates.
The coining of the word Ozamis, therefore, is an attempt to mix the place's historicity, on the one hand, and reverence for the sterling example of sacrifice displayed by the late senator, on the other.
But Rosauro noted that long after the debates were over and even after the city's charter took effect, there were some "preservationists" who occasionally voice protest to the re-naming of the town.
One of this was the practice of local writers who contribute essays to national publications to indicate "Misamis City" as their address.
The spelling confusion that persisted for the last 56 years exposed a serious dearth of recorded social memory that threatens to bury a rich and storied local
history along with the passage of time.

Blueleo October 25th, 2010, 05:34 AM MinDA, lawmakers to push for bigger Mindanao budget
Friday, October 22, 2010
NEWLY installed Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) chairperson Secretary Luwalhati Antonino is poised to work with Mindanao legislators in pushing for the island's bigger share in the national budget.
Speaking at the Re-organizational Meeting of the House Committee on Mindanao Affairs last month, Secretary Antonino stressed the need to lobby for Mindanao's fair share in the country's national resources.
"Budget is a very important part of development and therefore I think if we can work together, we can ask for a bigger slice of the budget," she said.
She added that Mindanao has to catch up with mainstream national development, having been a victim of development disparity and economic inequity.
"Mindanao should have equity or parity of access to national development and progress," she said.
Mindanao lawmakers led by Sultan Kudarat Arnulfo Go, chairperson of the House Committee on Mindanao Affairs, also vowed support for policy initiatives that aim to increase Mindanao's budget.
The committee has agreed to further study Mindanao's overall budget requirements.
Go, along with the other members of the committee, recognized that Mindanao needs special attention as its socio-economic situation is distinct from that in the Luzon and Visayas regions.
Mindanao's peace and order situation is unstable due to intermittent armed conflicts while peace and development are erratic and inconsistent due to political and social instability brought about by armed rebels challenging government authority.
Poverty, in its severest form, is found in the island. Currently, six of the country's 10 poorest provinces are found in Mindanao.
Moreover, Mindanao lags behind relative to other island groups in terms of human development. Four provinces in Mindanao belong to the bottom five in terms of human development.
Meanwhile, Deputy House Speaker Beng Climaco has also recently led Mindanao legislators in a meeting with Secretary Antonino in a bid to strengthen their partnership as well as ensure significant projects in this part of the country.
Climaco said the partnership of the Mindanao bloc in the House of Congress should also be strengthened and reinforced to ensure that noteworthy projects and programs will be undertaken for the development and progress of Mindanao.
Pushing for Mindanao's bigger share in the national budget is one of the identified strategies to achieve the overall peace and development goals for Mindanao over the next 20 years.
According to the Mindanao 2020 Peace and Development Framework Plan, Mindanao's agriculture and agribusiness can only be strengthened as linchpins for broad-based development by raising the island's budget. Twenty years from now, agriculture and agribusiness will remain the primary growth driver of Mindanao's economy.
A sequel to the Mindanao 2020 Development Framework Plan developed in 1995, the Mindanao 2020 provides the 20-year strategic direction and framework for peace and development in Mindanao.
The Mindanao 2020, which covers the period 2010 to 2030, is being crafted with inputs from several consultations and validations as well as quick surveys and key informant interviews with various groups all across the six regions of Mindanao.
Launched in 2008, the formulation of the Mindanao 2020 Plan is a project implemented by MinDA together with key stakeholder groups including the National Economic Development Authority, Department of Interior and Local Government, Mindanao Business Council, Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao Regional Government, Kusog Mindanaw and Regional Development Councils in Mindanao. The MRT/LRT expansion project aims to integrate and expand the capacity of existing MRT3 and LRTA railway lines. It involves the extension of the existing 15-kilometer LRTA Line 1 system southward to Bacoor, Cavite by an additional 11.7 kilometers. This project is expected to be completed within four years.
MRT Line 2 (Line 2 east extension) involves the construction of a 4 kilometer eastern extension of MRT Line 2 from Santolan in Pasig City to Masinag Juncton in Antipolo, Rizal. This project will benefit passengers coming from Marikina, Cainta and Antipolo with a two-year implementation period.
The new Bohol airport to be located in the Panglao island is of international standards and is envisioned to replace the existing airport in Tagbilaran City while the Puerto Princesa airport involves the rehabilitation of the current airport to meet the standards of the International Civil Aviation Organization.
The construction of these airports will facilitate better access to these tourist destination provinces. Both projects have four-year implementation period.

Blueleo October 25th, 2010, 02:08 PM Barangay Elections in Mindanao Regions Peaceful
October 25, 2010, 12:05pm
BUTUAN CITY, Philippines – The synchronized Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) election on Monday in Northeastern, Northern and Southern Mindanao regions (Regions X, Xl and Xlll) was generally peaceful and orderly. This was declared by top officials of the Philippine National Police (PNP) and Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).
This was the initial assessment and reports from various field unit commanders of the PNP and AFP in three regions in Mindanao on Monday’s election.
In a separate statement, AFP Eastern Mindanao Command (EastMincom) chief Lt. Gen. Raymundo Ferrer, 4th Infantry (Diamond) Division (ID) commander Maj. Gen. Victor Felix; and Maj. Gen. Jorge Segovia, 10th ID chief; and Police Regional Office Xlll (PRO Xlll) Regional Director Chief Supt. Reynaldo S. Rafal; and PRO X Regional Director Conrado E. Laza, said the implementation of Credible, Honest, Accurate, Meaningful and Peaceful Monday’s Barangay and SK election is successful.
The AFP and PRO commanders only observed some minor incidents and were “quickly” addressed by the Joint Security Coordinating Centers (JSCC) positioned at various strategic places in the three regions.
However, in the eve of the election, only a residence of a barangay leader in Bukidnon province was reportedly ransacked by undetermined number of communist terrorists, and the perpetrators are currently being pursued by government forces in the area.
No one was reported hurt during that incident, said Chief Supt. Laza.
Chief Supt. Rafal also reported that some alleged sightings of armed communist-New People’s Army (NPA) in isolated and far-flung areas in Surigao del Sur and Agusan del Sur but police mobile and special forces were immediately deployed to maintain peace in the reported areas.
Two shooting incidents also happened on Sunday night in Surigao del Sur province where a Sangguniang Bayan member in San Miguel town and a candidate for barangay kagawad in Lingig town, were killed by unidentified gunmen, Rafal said.
He added that investigation is still going in these two shooting incidents.
“Generally, the conduct of election is smooth, peaceful and orderly,” declared Chief Supt. Rafal.
On the other hand, officials of the Commission on Election (Comelec) also declared that turnout of voting was also smooth in the opening of the election at various voting places in the region.
“There were only some minor glitches but were immediately acted upon,” said Comelec Region Xlll Regional Director Atty. Francisco Pobe.
However in some reported voting places, lack of official ballots in the opening of election voting were immediately addressed. Due to the delay, voting in some places could be be extended up to 5 p.m., the Comelec official said.
The Comelec also declared that if official ballots would not arrive on Monday, the voting will continue in the next day.

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine National Police (PNP) stood pat on its stand on Monday that a woman who was arrested while campaigning for the barangay chair position of Labuyo, Tangub City in Misamis Occidental is indeed a member of the notorious Ampang-Colangco robbery group.
Mary Anne Angcap, who was implicated in the armed robbery of the SM Banco de Oro branch in Dasmarinas, Cavite last month, was arrested on October 19.
She was collared by virtue of 2 arrest warrants issued by the Bacoor Regional Trial Court.
She was also included on the list of the most wanted persons in the country.
Angcap has denied involvement in the robbery.
During her arrest, she told her supporters that a certain “Nikki” only used her name.
"Iyung pulis na humuli sa akin sinabihan ako na huwag akong mag-alala at matakot dahil ang totoong Nikki ginamit lang ang pangalan ko at siya mismo ang nakahuli nito,” she claimed.
“Magpasalamat daw ako sa Panginoon at siya ang pinapunta upang humuli sa akin dahil napag-utusan lang sa taas dahil sa pagpasok ko sa politika."
However, Chief Inspector Joselito Savares, PNP-Regional Police Intelligence and Operations Unit official, maintained they have enough evidence to prove that Angcap is a member of the robbery gang.
She posted a P400,000 bail and was able to run in Monday’s election.

Good publicity but they need an anchor tenant to make it work. Just wondering what happened to Robinson's?. I'm afraid such combination of intermodal terminal coupled with small local shops will make it more like a "glorified market/mall". A branded tenant will set an example of what people will expect. Regardless, quite a big step for this city.

Ms. Michelle T. Daomilas of Ozamis City signed franchise contract with SLERS and PICA PICA at its Corporate Office along Velez Street in Cagayan de Oro City last October 20, 2010.
Present at the signing ceremony are Ms. Mercedes P. Mejia, the Managing Director of SLERS, and Jeffrey S. Benedicto, Franchise Officer.
Daomilas is now the 7th Franchisee and has opened the 7th Franchise Outlet at Ozamis Geege Emall. She has now joined the six other successful franchisees of SLERS and PICA PICA in Northern and Southern Mindanao.
SLERS products can now be found at Surigao Metro Shopping Plaza, Iligan Gaisano Mall, Davao Gaisano Mall, Davao SM, Gensan KCC, and Valencia NVM.
SLERS has created a franchise called PICA PICA, which sells Chicharon, Sukang Tuba, Banana Chips, Toasted Peanuts, and many more.
SLERS began as a personal culinary endeavor in 1969 when Fely Pelaez learned to prepare delicious smoked country ham in her home in Del Monte, Bukidnon. The ham became eventually popular and then became a cottage industry and the hobby turned into a family corporation, selling in Cagayan de Oro and Manila.
In an interview, Ms. Mercedes P. Mejia, SLERS Managing Director told Business Week Mindanao that by the tail end of October 2010, the 2nd Branch of SLERS Ham and Café will be opened along Velez St., to serve the public, the travelers, locales, domestic and foreign tourists. The Café will then be a landmark that your visit to Cagayan de Oro City is not complete without dining at SLERS Ham and Café and have a memorable “Culinary Experience.”
Today, SLERS makes delicious and authentic Jamon de Cagayan de Oro, Country Style Ham, Sweet Ham, Longganisa de Cagayan, Tocino de Cagayan, Smoked Country Bacon, Smoked Pork Loin, Fresh Native Chorizo and Hot Dogs. All these quality foods continue to be made the traditional way.
The success of SLERS as an industry leader is the result of giving customers the highest quality ham and gourmet meals, along with unmatched customer service and to exceed their expectations.

Blueleo October 27th, 2010, 05:11 PM Ozamiz City Elections went well
Tuesday, October 26, 2010
OZAMIZ CITY--Despite 16 of 51 Barangays of Ozamiz City identified by the Commission on elections (COMELEC) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) as critical and less critical areas, synchronized Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) polls conducted successfully.
The nine critical barangays were closely monitored by the PNP were Barangays Gala, Montol, Capucao P, Balintawak, Guimad, Guinggona, Mentering, Sangay Daku and Trigos.
The less crirical barangays consist of Kinuman Sur, Kinuman Norte, Malaubang, Cavinte, Manaka, Lam-an and Labo.
Ozamiz City has a total of 71,735 voters in 51 barangays; 264 polling precincts and 54 polling centers of the SK.
Police Superintendent Gervacio Balmaceda, Jr., Ozamiz City chief said the polls went well despite an attempt of ballot snatching in Ozamiz City National High School (OCNHS), were Barangay Lam-an voters cast their votes.
In an interview over dxDD-AM, a Catholic run radio station Balmaceda said that at about 7 pm, Monday two unidentified riding in tandem suspects forcefully snatched the ballot box from precinct 211-A and 211-B. The said ballot box was about to be transported to COMELEC office when grabbed by the suspects.
The suspects were riding in haste to leave but blocked by the PNP mobile patrol causing their driven motorcycle to stumble.
According to reports, suspects fled to unknown direction leaving the ballot box.
Police authorities still conducting thorough investigation of the said incident.

litigs October 27th, 2010, 07:14 PM Sorry for overreacting! Change the topic!
it's not about the salary but rather the investment on making the first step as a politician. As the saying goes," you have to spend some money in order to earn more money"!. That 1M is nothing when this brgy. captain later on becomes a congressman. Well, not so much in the barrios but rather in the urban centres.

Blueleo October 28th, 2010, 08:28 AM I can't imagine these people spend millions of money just to win as Brgy Capt. Does anyone knows the salary of this position?
it's not about the salary but rather the investment on making the first step as a politician. As the saying goes," you have to spend some money in order to earn more money"!. That 1M is nothing when this brgy. captain later on becomes a congressman. Well, not so much in the barrios but rather in the urban centres.
For Ozamiz, i was told a Brgy capt receives P15t while a kagawad receives P10t monthly.
Their honorarium really depends on internal revenue allotment (IRA)
share from national govt and income of a particular city.
i guess A bigger city would give bigger monthly honorarium to these brgy officials ?
Hahahaha.
Murag closed pa man to the public ug vehicle ang Bukagan hill . murag naa man siguro ali didto sa road.
:? :dunno:
d_jeb October 28th, 2010, 08:57 AM wala diay mo nagbutang ug inyoha dra jeb? :)

it has a good potential as major tourist attraction sa Ozamiz
Plano man to sa city govt sa una nga butangan ug Huge statue sa birhen or
christ overlooking the city ug Panguil bay, plus a chapel ug stations of the cross along the spiral uphill road.

No more RP; It’s now PH or PHL
By ROY C. MABASA
October 28, 2010, 3:46pm
MANILA, Philippines — Instead of using RP, which is the acronym for the Republic of the Philippines, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) and its Foreign Service Posts (FSPs) will now use the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) initials PH or PHL when referring to the Philippines.
This is in accordance with DFA Department Order No. 16-10 dated October 20 issued by Foreign Affairs Secretary Alberto G. Romulo which directed 67 Embassies, 23 Consulates General, and four Permanent Missions to use the initials PH or PHL.
This is line with the Philippine membership with the ISO, as well as to avoid the ambiguity and confusion with the use of the initials RP.
"The long standing use of the initials RP is not in accordance with ISO codes, leading to ambiguous initials that can also refer to other countries," the DFA explained in a statement released on Thursday.
The ISO developed the ISO3166-1 codes, assigning two-letter (alpha-2) and three-letter (alpha-3) code to member-countries.
ISO 3166-1 is part of the ISO 3166 standard adopted by the ISO, and defines codes for the names of countries, dependent territories, and special areas of geographical interest. The codes for the Philippines are PH and PHL, respectively.
These codes are used in the Philippines and abroad in airline ticketing, passport issuances, currencies, and internationally-traded shares of stocks, among others.
The DFA office of consular affairs(OCA) adopts and reflects the ISO three-letter codes in the data pages of the Philippine electronic passport.
The ISO standards provide technological, economic, and societal benefits. For businesses, the widespread adoption of international standards means that suppliers can develop and offer products and services meeting specifications that have wide international acceptance in their sectors. For governments, international standards provide the technological and scientific bases underpinning health, safety, and environmental legislation.
The ISO is an international standard-setting body composed of representatives from various national standards organizations.
Founded on February 23, 1947, the organization promulgates worldwide proprietary industrial and commercial standards.
The Philippines is represented in the organization by the Bureau of Product Standards of the Department of Trade and Industry.
Adoption of these initials was recently endorsed by former Ambassador Juan Ona and the DFA Tattlers Group, a group of retired and active Philippine envoys.

Blueleo October 30th, 2010, 03:03 AM Budget for Mindanao railway out soon
Friday, October 29, 2010
THE long-overdue Mindanao Railway project will finally be realized through the efforts of Cagayan de Oro Rep. Rufus Rodriguez (2nd district).
Rodiguez, who authored House Bill 1855, which calls for the creation of the Mindanao Railways Corporation and for funds for its operation, said that by 2011, at least $1 billion will be released by foreign investors from Germany or China in time for the project's initial construction.
He said Congress has approved his bill and the money is now being released for the railway project to continue its operation.
"The ongoing project is expected to be finished sooner but not in time for the Laguindingan International Airport, which is about to be finished," Rodriguez said.
He said contractors will not rush the billion-dollar project as they will make sure that it will be state-of-the-art and one of its kind in Mindanao.
Rodriguez said they are already in the process of doing civil works, where they will pay lot owners and the indigenous people for the road right of way.
"This project is expected to cut off travel time within different cities in Mindanao by at least 50 percent aside from providing comfort to passengers. No hassles," Rodriguez said.
The feasibility study of the Mindanao Railway project started in 2003 and Rodriguez said they hope to finish it before his term ends.
The Mindanao Railway project is estimated to cost P66.5 billion (US$1.33 billion) and would be implemented in four phases with the initial route to start from Laguindingan and end in Cagayan de Oro City. It aims to cut the present 90-minute bus travel time between Cagayan de Oro and Iligan City to just about 15 to 20 minutes.
The railway is expected to link urban centers like Cagayan de Oro, Iligan, Zamboanga, Pagadian, Dipolog, Marawi, Cotabato and Davao. (Nicole J. Managbanag)
Blueleo October 30th, 2010, 03:07 AM Northern Mindanao scores high in exports
Saturday, October 30, 2010
EXPORTS in northern Mindanao scores an overwhelming increase of 180 percent in the first half this year against last year, records from the regional National Economic Development Authority (NEDA) revealed.
The NEDA-Northern Mindanao said the region exported a total of US$269.34 million worth of products, 50 percent of which came from Misamis Oriental, the region's consistent dollar earner.
Next in rank was Lanao del Norte province, which captured 27.64 percent of the total exports.
Except for Camiguin, the rest of the provinces posted substantial growth in exports, indicating huge demand for local products abroad.
Misamis Occidental, though it contributed 11 percent of the total exports, marked the highest growth for the second quarter this year among other provinces, registering US$28.7 million, or a 23,842 percent increase from US$120,000 during the same period in 2009. This tremendous increase was brought about by the resumption of the operation of two oil mills and two frozen prawn processing plants located n the province.
Lanao del Norte's main export of crude coconut and cochin oil valued at US$94.29 million accounted for over a third of the total export earnings of the region.
Oleochemicals, another coconut-based product, was the second biggest export earner with US$55.71 million, or 20.68 percent of the regional total.
Fresh bananas landed third among the top 10 exports of the region, accounting for 21 percent of total growth. The surge in demand for bananas in the foreign market resulted in expansion of farm operations of some Davao-based companies located in Bukidnon such as Soriano Fruit Corporation, Stanfilco, DOLE Philippines (North Skyland Zone) and AMS Farming Corporation.
The value of the region's top 10 exports in the second quarter is almost fourfold its value in the same quarter last year while six of the 10 export commodities are now in double-digit figures, compared to only two figures in the previous comparable period.
By sector, coconut-based products remain the major export earning US$170.97 million, representing 63 percent of the regional total. This is followed by fresh fruits with 11 percent share of total exports.
Among the major export gainers are fresh fruits, with 586 percent, iron and steel with 500 percent and coconut-based products at 399 percent. Special transactions jumped at 1045 percent from $0.11 to 1.26 million. (Loui S. Maliza)

Pagadian will be at the junction since it will be the link from Cdo-Iligan and Dvo-Cotabato on the way to Zamboanga; Marawi, Ozamiz and Dipolog will be a branch of the network. Yes, Ozamiz should be a part of it.
