SM starting new retail center format
Philippine Daily Inquirer
First Posted 21:34:00 01/09/2011

MANILA, Philippines—Tycoon Henry Sy’s SM Prime Holdings Inc. is pilot-testing in Dasmariñas, Cavite, a new shopping center format that seeks to redevelop an existing rundown public market owned by the local government into a pioneering formal retail complex with room for the public vendors.

SM Prime Holdings Inc. executive vice president and chief finance officer Jeffrey Lim told reporters that his company would spend at least P500 million for this pilot project, which would be among the seven new local shopping centers that the group would open this year.

The group is planning a P20-billion fresh capital outlay for this year, mostly for the construction of malls.

The seven new shopping malls this year will make available 400,000 square meters of additional retail space under the vast SM mall empire. This still pales in comparison with the gross leasable space created in 2006 when the company opened five malls, including Mall of Asia, which accounted for 406,961 square meters.

Lim said most of the new mall openings this year would be smaller than the usual SM shopping centers. Aside from the pilot project in Dasmariñas, Cavite, SM Prime is set to open malls in Masinag, Antipolo; San Fernando, Pampanga; Apalit, Pampanga; Commonwealth Avenue, Quezon City; La Consolacion, Cebu; and BF Sucat, Parañaque.

While the malls to be opened this year are smaller than most of SM’s existing malls, they signify SM Prime’s increasing penetration into new markets. The move may also pave the way for more partnerships with local government units (LGUs) on sprucing up public markets into more robust retail centers.

For the Dasmariñas public market project, SM Prime has started construction of the retail center based on a long-term lease contract with the LGU.

SM Prime obtained a concession to operate the center for 25 years, renewable for another 25 years. It will pay the local government unit rental for the use of the property.

The Dasmariñas shopping area will have a gross leasable space of 30,000 sqm. It will be ready for opening by the fourth quarter of this year, Lim said.

He said there would be a “semi basement” with wet and dry sections for vendors. The ground floor will house a hypermarket with some food shops. The second floor will be for third-party tenants and the top floor will be for parking.—Doris C. Dumlao

Tangub City's Sinanduloy Festival is already attracting foriegn media....

National Geographic magazine, French TV crew to cover festival

By Linette C. Ramos
Wednesday, January 12, 2011

SINULOG will gain more international exposure this year, with a French TV news team and a National Geographic writer documenting the grand parade and other religious activities.

Photographers from Singapore, Hong Kong, South Korea, Japan and other countries also have joined some 1,800 participants of the Sinulog photo contest.

For the first time, the National Geographic will feature the Sinulog in its magazine, which is distributed worldwide.

Writer Paul Christy from the National Geographic office in New York was only supposed to document the grand parade on Sunday, Sinulog Foundation Inc. (SFI) Executive Director Ricky Ballesteros said.

“But when we sent them the program, they found the other activities interesting so he decided to document Sinulog from the beginning, including the dawn procession. This is good for us because slowly, we are getting international exposure and we are now able to promote the Sinulog in the global arena, which is what we have always wanted,” he said.

A crew from TV France 3 also arrived in Tangub City and will document Tribu Sinanduloy’s participation in the Sinulog, starting from their trip to Cebu, their performance during the grand parade on Sunday and up to the awarding ceremony the following day.

Tribu Sinanduloy, the contingent from Tangub, is a consistent winner in the Sinulog-based category and is closely watched by judges and revelers because of their superb performance year after year.

Ballesteros said he also expects other foreign media and photographers to cover the Sinulog, which is known to be the grandest and the biggest religious festival in the country, with the many contingents it draws every year.

In the photography contest, some 1,800 IDs have been sold by the SFI.

Sinulog organizers assure exciting 2011 grand parade

CEBU CITY, JAN. 12, 2011 (PNA) – Organizers said the 2011 edition of the Sinulog grand parade on Sunday, with at least 50 dancing contingents and 60 other entries in the float, higante and puppeteer categories, will be more entertaining than previous parades.

Sinulog Foundation Inc. (SFI) Executive Director Ricky Ballesteros said the audience can look forward to the unique performance expected from the 11 contingents from cities and provinces outside Cebu.

At least two million revelers are expected to watch the grand parade this Sunday, now on its 31st year.

Among the spectators are some 25 government officials from Yeosu City, South Korea and Harlemermeer, The Netherlands.

Cebu City officials invited the delegations from Yeosu and Harlemermeer, which are sister-cities of Cebu City.

“This is going to be one of our longest parades, if not the longest, because we have the most number of contingents joining this Sunday. We will have to start early so we can also end the parade early,” Ballesteros said.

Around 30 also signed up for the float competition, 30 for the higante contest and 20 for the puppeteer contest.

Ballesteros said the number of contingents prompted them to start the parade early so they can end it by 8 p.m.

Ballesteros said they intend to start the parade by 9:30 a.m., immediately after the solemn mass that Archbishop Jose Palma will celebrate at the Cebu City Sports Center at 8:30 a.m.

A short silent drill by the Philippine Air Force (PAF) will follow the mass, before the parade starts.

Contingents will dance from the sports center and exit along P. del Rosario St. to Imus Road, going to Gen. Maxilom Ave. and Osmeña Blvd., and will end with their five-minute dance and ritual at the sports center.

The 11 out-of-town groups are Tribu Sinan-duloy of Tangub City, Bayawan City, Pintados of Tacloban City, Hinugyaw of Cotabato Province, Lubi-Lubi Festival of Surigao del Norte, Tribu Sinandurot of Dumaguete City, Tribu Himug-ulaw of Placer in Masbate, the Province of Lanao del Norte, Tribu Ormocano of Ormoc City, Tribu Buyuganon of Abuyog in Leyte and the Surala Cultural Group of South Cotabato.

The Cebu City government and the provincial government are entered as guest performers in the parade. (PNA)LAM/EB/re

‘Lechon manok’ magic: Key to Sr. Pedro’s success
By Ma. Cecilia Rodriguez
Mindanao Bureau
First Posted 18:29:00 02/16/2008

MISAMIS ORIENAL -- A long line of customers savor the sweet, mouth-watering smell of roasted chicken, cooked to tenderness by Sr. Pedro’s helpers, as they wait for their order along a busy road in Lapasan, Cagayan de Oro City. That chicken, the prodigious lechon manok (roasted chicken) that captured the Pinoy palate by storm, is most sought by average people who, as one of its loyal patrons says, just want to get a taste of Sr. Pedro’s blessing.

Now with 250 outlets scattered around Metro Manila and key cities nationwide, Ang Lechon Manok ni Sr. Pedro has taken a giant stride to culinary fame and fortune.

Peter Unabia, founder of Anakciano Inc. that owns Sr. Pedro, talks of their next project after 16 years of enjoying phenomenal success -- to return the blessings they have received. This, Peter, or Pedro to his friends, has been doing, along with his 10 other siblings, for the past four years.

“We organized a foundation, called the Anaktering Foundation, in honor of my mother Tering who was very religious. Through this foundation, we found ways of sharing our blessings. And we chose to help the small farmers of Misamis Oriental,” says Peter who now sits as provincial board member in the 2nd district of Misamis Oriental.

The foundation aims to provide a livelihood opportunity for small farmers. This is done by contracting the farmers as suppliers of chicken broilers.

“We contract the farmers to supply the chicken. We give them series of trainings on how to breed broilers. These trainings are given for free. We also provide the chicks, feeds, even the medicines and vaccines. All the farmer has to do is build a cage that will pass our standards, and take care of the chicken until its ready,” explains Peter.

Presently, backyard contract growing by the marginalized farmers accounts for 10 percent of the total chicken supply of Anakciano Inc. The other 90 percent is supplied by commercial contract growers. In sum, the annual output from the contract growers has reached a whopping 11 million birds. Of these, 10 million are processed as ready-to-roast chicken delivered to all Ang Lechon Manok ni Sr. Pedro outlets around the country, while the others are sold as dressed chickens.

Peter the farmer

The Unabia family traces its roots to Malaybalay, Bukidnon, as hired hands who plowed large tracts of fields owned by big hacenderos. The family patriarch, Daciano, leased a small piece of land, and, like other small farmers in Mindanao, had to contend with middlemen, creditors and traders to get by with a few earnings from his harvest.

“I grew up knowing how difficult life is for a small farmer. We were poor and we were not given any opportunity to rise up from our miserable situation,” says Peter.

Hard work and enough will to get ahead in life eventually took the Unabia family to better times. Daciano and Tering were able to send their children to school. But the eldest in the brood, Peter, had set his eyes on the chicken business.

In 1992, Peter sought the help of his brothers to put up a small road-side roasted chicken outlet. Banking on his brother’s prowess in cooking and his own talent in management, Peter persevered in making that small chicken stand his ladder to success.

“We didn’t give up despite the many challenges. It helps to know that if you succeed, many others will benefit, like my family, and yes, my kin, the farmers,” says Peter.

What is the right way to help the farmers, Peter asks himself. The answer he gives is based on his own experiences as a poor farmer—to give them the opportunity to prosper, to free them from the bondage of credit and to develop in them a sense of ownership and trust.

Not dole-out

“Instead of giving the farmers fish, we teach them how to fish. This is our thrust in the foundation. It should not be dole-out, otherwise, the farmers will not prosper,” says Peter.

Presently, the foundation is directly dealing with 1,624 farmers from Balingasag, Talisayan and other remote towns in the province who were contracted as backyard growers. While most of the farmers reported a P3,000 to P5,000 additional income from the project, there are some who were not able to sustain it.

Peter is shaking his head as he explained the difficulty of managing the project. “Some of our beneficiaries had problems taking care of the chicken. Some sold them to earn quick cash, some ate the chicken for lack of anything else to eat.”

But, Peter says, they were persevering. They have, after all, chosen to deal with more than a thousand farmers, instead of dealing with a few large commercial growers, to distribute income. The 200 chicks that the foundation provides the farmers are translated to P11,200-investment per farmer.

“It is a big amount to invest, but we get consolation from knowing that some of the farmers that we help eventually prosper,” says Peter. Some farmers soon expanded to become commercial growers themselves.

Just recently, the Anaktering Foundation and the Anakciano Inc. have ventured into a goat-dispersal project aimed at teaching farmers shared responsibility. Still in an experimental stage, the initial 20 recipients were given five female and one male goats for dispersal. As soon as the female goats breed, the recipients will have to give the first breed to a new recipient.

The biggest venture so far that the foundation has initiated is its corn production. With 140 marginalized farmers benefiting from the project, the foundation has invested P22,800 per hectare of corn. The farmer’s counterpart is the land. Labor is paid for by the company at P5,000 per hectare, as well as all farm inputs, such as seeds and fertilizer.

Children of poor farmers have also benefited from the “Hustong Pagkain Program” of the foundation. It is a feeding program for malnourished children in rural areas of Misamis Oriental. Thrice a week, foundation volunteers go to the rural areas to give out milk and chicken to children beneficiaries. A total of 318 malnourished children have graduated from the feeding program.

Sustainability

Peter has some things in mind to sustain the livelihood opportunities given to farmers. The key, he says, is local government unit support that is not paltry but should be consistent in helping the farmers. Another is the delivery of programs by the Department of Agriculture which should be appropriate to the needs of the farmers.

“The framework should be toward quality not quantity. The programs should be sustainable and not just dole-out,” Peter reiterates.

As a public official though, Peter knows there’s more work to be done in terms of re-orienting programs for marginalized farmers. “But I’m not stopping,” he counters.

San Nicolas Ecological Association Story

Sinanduloy Dance Troupe of Tangub City: Mindanao’s winningest contingent in Sinulog Grand Parade
January 21, 2009 · 10:40 am

The 2009 edition of Sinulog Grand Parade has just passed with the same excitement and spectacle. Congratulations to the Buyogan Festival of Abuyog Leyte and the Sinanduloy Dance Troupe for winning the Free Interpretation and Sinulog Based categories respectively after both have displayed splendid performances.

What I will be writing today is the history of the participation of contingents from Mindanao which have dominated the awards in the Sinulog Grand Parade for most part of the past two decades.

The Mindanao debut in the Sinulog Festival, as I can remember, is made by Surigao’s Bonok Bonok Maradjaw Karajaw Festival in 1990. It turned out that Surigao’s feat was trailblazing as it paved the way for more Mindanao contingents to come and participate in the said festival. Right after its first appearance, Surigao City made an impression by bagging the first prize. By the way, the main stage at that time was located at the North Reclamation area right across the then White Gold Supermarket. What is remarkable for Surigao’s participation is that it introduced to the audience the fast paced dance steps. While before, spectators watched structured dances, Surigao surprised them with their agility and different but emerging musicality.

The following year in 1991, Surigao came back only to relinquish the crown to Malitbog, Southern Leyte in the Free Interpretation category. In 1992, it came back strong by retaking the title.

In 1993, a new Mindanao contingent emerged to dislodge Surigao from the top. The Province of Camiguin participated for the first time in the Sinulog Free Interpretation category and wrest the title from Surigao City’s Bonok Bonok Maradjaw Karajaw. Camiguin, introduced for the first time, the use of multiple costumed dancers. While before most dancers are clad in one costume, Camiguin paraded dancers with different attire which have different roles to play in the performance. Noteworthy for that year, it was also the first year when Tangub City’s Sinanduloy Dance Troupe participated in the Sinulog, finishing fourth place in the Free Interpretation category. They were already good at that time but not quite good as it is today.

In 1994, smarting from its defeat to Camiguin, Surigao bounced back with a vengeance and reclaimed the title convincingly. Camiguin’s best finish the year before, was contrasted by what could have been their worst performance in the Sinulog. It was quite a shock that they performed an actual traditional circumcision during its performance. It was a stunt but it failed to impress the judges and the crowd. Boos were heard from the audience.

In 1995, another Mindanao contingent ousted Surigao from the top and this time it is the neighboring city of Butuan which for the first time participated in the Sinulog Free Interpretation category. Butuan City impressed the jurors by its electric and fast paced dance steps and flawless execution. So impressive was Butuan City’s performance that they again bagged the top prize in the 1996 edition, making them the only back to back winner from Mindanao. In their 1996 performance, the crowd was treated with non stop surprises that ended with the sudden emergence of Magellan’s Cross. Butuan’s back to back win was never ever duplicated by any Mindanao contingent. It turned out also the last time Butuan participated in the event. My hunched is that their sudden non participation in the Sinulog was due to the launching of their own street dancing festival in honor of the Sto. Nino, the Kahimunan Festival held in Libertad, Butuan City.

In 1997, a local group, the Daanbantayan Dancers won the Sinulog Free Interpretation category. However in 1998, another Surigao contingent grabbed the spotlight by winning the contest, the Buyawanong Placer of Placer, Surigao del Norte. Choreography wise, it’s the same as Bonok Bonok. Only the sponsor was different.

In 1999, a commercial entry won the top prize in the Free Interpretation category, the contingent of the PLDT. Not surprising though as its dancers is composed of the now dominant Lumad Basakanon.

In 2000, Tangub’s Sinanduloy came back with a bang. It won the Free Interpretation category and signaled a new era in the Sinulog Grand Parade dominance. It duplicated its feat in 2001. In 2002, Sinanduloy transferred to the Sinulog based category and continued its dominance. It also won the 2004, 2005, 2006 and the 2007 edition in the Sinulog Based category.

While Sinanduloy practically owned the Sinulog based category, a minor stir was created in 2006 in the Free Interpretation category. Camiguin, after years of runner up finishes, finally won another Free Interpretation Grand Prize. It came back in 2007 but lost to Lumad Basakanon. It was the last time Camiguin contingent was seen in the Sinulog.

In 2008, Sinanduloy tasted its bitter lose against a local upstart, the Siloy Festival of Alcoy, Cebu. I have heard that Sinanduloy somewhat questioned the verdict since Alcoy’s performance was quite a cross between the Free Interpretation and the Sinulog based category but as they say El fallo de juez is inapelable (The decision of the judges is final and unappealable). So bitter was the loss that Sinanduloy contemplated in not participating the 2009 edition of the Sinulog. It could have been a decision that they would have regretted as they won this year’s edition in the Sinulog based category. Once more Sinanduloy is the top prize winner.

This year, only three contingents are from Mindanao, Sinanduloy, Lanao del Norte and General Luna, Surigao del Norte. The last time that several Mindanao contingents participated in the Sinulog was in 2005 which I think was a reunion of sorts for Mindanao. Bonok Bonok of Surigao City, Buyawanong Placer of Surigao del Norte, Camiguin (which fielded two contingents), Iligan, Ozamiz, and of course Tangub City were all there.

Other Mindanao contingents which made an appearance in the Sinulog were Cabadbaran City (2008), Cantilan, Surigao del Sur (2004), Tandag (2004) and Davao del Norte (1998).

For the past 2 years however, we see a dwindling appearance of Mindanao contingents. I can hypothesize three things for this. One, maybe organizers made the participation less enticing in terms of prizes and incentives and two, the cost of participation in a festival away from Mindanao has become growingly prohibitive that it dilutes foreseen benefits in terms of awareness and exposure that a place can get in participating in the Sinulog. Lastly, Mindanao cities and municipalities have developed their own local festivals which have become cheaper alternatives for advertising their localities. This is what happened to Butuan City with its own Kahimunan Festival. Other notable Mindanao festivals are, Bonok Bonok Maradjaw Karajaw of Surigao City, the Naliyagan Festival in Agusan del Sur, the Kaamulan Festival in Bukidnon, the Kadayawan Festival in Davao City to name a few which have carved names in their own right.

The Sinulog organizers may not admit it but the dwindling Mindanao contingent appearances should be a cause for concern. Either they would make moves to encourage them to come back or they will find alternatives to compensate for the absence. This year, more and more public schools are appearing in the Sinulog Grand Parade. The organizers should encourage that because one can only imagine if there will come a time that not even a single Mindanao contingent will come back and participate. Accept it or not, Mindanao contingents adds to the excitement. The success of a Sinulog Grand Parade is usually gauged by the number of out of town contingents which will take part. This early, Sinanduloy, the only remaining enthusiastic Mindanao contingent, is doubtful if it will come back next year even if they won the title.

Lastly, we can only cherish the success of our Mindanao contingents appearing in a big festival like Sinulog Grand Parade and before a very discriminating Cebuano audience.

P50 bill in NGS to be launched in Dagupan Jan. 17

DAGUPAN CITY, Jan. 14, 2011 (PNA) - The P50 bill in the new generation series (NGS) issued by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) will be launched in Dagupan on January 17 in a ceremony at the BSP branch in Bonuan Tondaligan, Dagupan.

Beta Cervantes, BSP deputy director, said this will be the first time that one of the denominations in the NGS will reach Dagupan and Pangasinan.

She said the launching will formally introduce the new P50 bill to the public in Pangasinan which will also be followed with the launching in all the other regions of the country.

Cervantes revealed 35 million pieces of the NGS of the P20, P50, P100, P200, P500 and P1,000 bills are undergoing full-blast printing at the BSP in Manila, starting with the P20 bill.

She said all the denominations are now in circulation in Manila but added that it takes time before all these are distributed to all the regions of the country.

Stressing that the launching of the new P50 bill is necessary, Cervantes revealed that there is a need to inform the public in Pangasinan what they expect from the new currency.

All these bills will be unloaded in the market, she said, through the banks to whom they already sent earlier copies of the series.

Cervantes said that the new bills have seven security features, among them is emboss printing, the serial number is different from the old bills, starting with a small number with the succeeding numbers coming bigger.

While the bills in the NGS are being released, the old bills remain as legal tender till 2014, Cervantes said, pointing out that the old bills are now 25 years old and need to be retired.

The life span of the old currency bills is just a few years and are normally being destroyed when these changed hands, she added. (PNA)

Mindanao’s One Network Bank eyes Visayas expansion
Business Week Mindanao

THE One Network Bank (ONB), the widest banking network in Mindanao, has announced plans to expand by the end of next year to the neighboring island of Mindanao, confident of its solid financial footing and the vibrant economic activity it has infused in the Mindanao  countryside.

ONB president Alex V. Buenaventura said the bank plans to open five branches in Mindanao, the maximum number allowed by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) for expansion in one year.

He said the bank’s “proven niche-market business model of building modern banking infrastructure in the countryside areas of Mindanao will be replicated in the Visayas where very progressive countryside areas are underbanked.”

Underbanked rural areas, he said, would be “in terms of access to modern big-bank facilities such as the PCHC [Philippine Clearing House Corp.], direct clearing checking account, ATMs [automated teller machines] and POS [point-of-sale] debit terminals, online fund transfers, fast inward foreign remittances and micro-to-big business loans.”

The ONB has commissioned a comparative study of different potential cluster areas in the Visayas “which should be completed in six months resulting in a selected priority cluster area,” he said.

ONB has practiced the “cluster approach of at least five new branches” in entering a new cluster area in countryside Mindanao, he added. This cluster approach was tested in Bukidnon for its Quezon, Don Carlos, Maramag, Valencia and Malaybalay branches.

The ONB has already 75 branches with a BSP approval for additional five branches in Mindanao: Matina Crossing in Davao City; Babak in the Island Garden City of Samal, Davao del Norte; Oroquieta City in Misamis Occidental;  Molave in Zamboanga del Sur; and Ayala in Zamboanga City.

Buenaventura said after opening the five branches in September this year, ONB will apply for another five branches (four in Mindanao and one in Makati City) with targeted opening by April 2011.

“Then the next five branches to be applied for licensing by BSP will all be located within a selected cluster area in the Visayas with target opening before end-2011,” he said.

He described ONB as “the big bank in countryside Mindanao because its 75-branch network is wider than all other banks and because more than half of said branches are located in countryside areas in Mindanao that are either unbanked or underbanked.”

“ONB has a big clientele base of more than 510,000 small depositors and 92,000 small borrowers being served by its more than 1,050 professional employees and 96 ATM machines,” he said.

ONB has carried the slogan “Pera ng Mindanao, Para sa Mindanao [Mindanao’s money, to be used in Mindanao].”

ONB’s Visayan branches would carry a second slogan “Kwarta ng Visayas, Para sa Visayas” to banner its unique banking commitment that all deposits generated from the area will be used for micro-to-big loans in  the same area.”

The ONB was one of the few banks, commercial banks included, which went online banking in 2009, allowing its depositors to deposit and withdraw at any of its 71 branches. It was the first rural bank to install the POS terminal in the northern outskirt district of Calinan to unclog the branches’ long queues for water, light and phone bill payments.

The ONB also allowed small borrowers to prove their mettle in settling their accounts with the bank, posting a high 99-percent repayment.
“Even the less than 1-percent unpaid accounts are still collectibles and are not subject to be written off,” Buenaventura said, adding that “this indicated the high liquidity of the agriculture sector in the middle of a global crisis, currently affecting industries and exports.”

Asia’s first underwater resort hotel to be built off Palawan
By Emman Cena
Philippine Daily Inquirer
First Posted 19:26:00 01/14/2011

MANILA, Philippines—The country is all set to embrace a futuristic undersea project to rival those in Maldives, Dubai and Fiji, according to a Filipino team of developer and architects, which is set to build an underwater resort hotel in Palawan.

Dubbed as the Coral World Park, this multibillion-peso project will set the record as Asia’s first underwater resort development and the biggest undersea living in the world once the project is completed by 2013.

Picture this: You wake up to a picture perfect view of frivolously swimming manta rays and fishes or hold a meeting in a restaurant submerged in the pristine waters. Say what? All this isn’t science fiction according to an all-Filipino team behind the project.

Taking the helm is Singapore-based businessman Paul Moñozca, who is known for his advocacies of helping Filipino sports teams and the overseas remittance business. Partnering with Moñozca is renowned eco-architect Jose “Pinggoy” Mañosa, who will take charge of the architectural design of the Coral World Park.

“It’s high time we brought sustainable development underwater because there have been similar projects elsewhere in the world that have been proven successful,” Moñozca told Inquirer Property in an exclusive interview Wednesday.

He cited global warming and the rising water levels as factors that pushed him to look into the possibility of exploring the readiness of the country for this kind of revolutionary development.

Pegged at some $150 million, the undersea structure takes pride in its 24 undersea suites or pods called “Anemones,” which are submerged 60 feet below sea level with a fascinating 270-degree view of the sea. The 15-foot-high Anemones will be built by a US firm that specializes in submarines.

Several units of these Anemones will be open for public viewing at reasonable rates while majority are for ownership. Each 50-square-meter Anemone (the size of two-bedroom condo unit) can be customized per owner’s preference. It can be used as a private villa, a receiving or entertainment room that could cater to as many as 15 people.

Filipino ingenuity

How can one move from one pod/suite to another? The Coral World Park will be built with submarine technology. The mode of transport will be through glass bottom mini-submarines to be powered by the first mobile hydropower system, which generates up to 1 megawatt of electricity. This will use a patented water recycling and pressure chamber invented by an all-Filipino team of engineers, Moñozca said.

“The project will show to the world Filipino ingenuity as 80 percent of the project will be run and manned by Filipinos, from engineers to architects down to personnel,” Moñozca said. When completed, the proposed underwater habitat will be the biggest in the world.

Also part of the futuristic project is a 50-bedroom onland boutique hotel complete with amenities like casinos, spa, business center and an underwater restaurant to be named “Starfish,” which could seat as many as 200 people in its 600-square-meter dining area. A seahorse-shaped science center aptly called “Seahorse Science Center” will be built for tourists and will serve as the park’s marine observatory and conservation center showcasing the richness of marine life in the Philippines.

The project is expected to pour in billions of investments and will help create thousands of jobs for the people in Palawan and neighboring provinces.

Conservation tourism

Funding will come from Moñozca’s Monaco-based group, which counts investors from the United States, the Middle East and Russia. As an aggressive venture in ecotourism business, the project also aims to replenish the coral reefs in the area and would advocate conservation tourism in the country.

Moñozca related that everything has been in the planning stage since last year. He identified a group of islands in Coron as the site for development owing to its perfect geography, clear and cove-protected waters and rich marine life. The islands of Palawan hardly experience earthquakes and are not prone to visiting typhoons that occasionally hit the country.

The construction is set to start soon and will be completed in two years, according to Mañosa, who said this would be “my biggest project so far in my professional career.” Mañosa is behind some of the biggest projects like the San Miguel Building constructed in the 1980s and the Brent International School.

“I was overwhelmed myself when the project was offered to me. Even my family is excited about this; my grandchildren are asking when they could visit the underwater resort,” Mañosa said.

The group dispelled fears of security as the whole resort will be tightly guarded. The proponents also envision a cashless system of transaction as everything will be made via specially issued bracelet cards similar to the function of a credit card.

The group promised strict adherence to protect the environment and the biodiversity of Palawan. They said no marine life will be harmed during the course of its construction to its operations.

151 contingents for grand parade
By July Ann Carmel Antoni and Grace Melanie I. Lacamiento, USJR / BRP (The Freeman) Updated January 15, 2011 12:00 AM

CEBU, Philippines - A total of 151 contingents will participate in the various categories of the Sinulog 2011 grand parade on Sunday. The event will start with a Pontifical Mass at 6 a.m. at the Basilica del Santo Niño to be followed by another Mass at Cebu City Sports Center at 8 a.m. by newly-installed Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma.

The parade itself will start at 9 a.m. in the morning until all contingents will be able to perform at the grand stand.

Sinulog Foundation Inc. executive director Ricky Ballesteros reminded all the contingents to follow the regulations and the flow of the parade.

For the float category, contingents shall not throw merchandised items and shall not use backdrops.

“Those who would violate the guidelines will be dealt accordingly. They must follow the rules or else we shall impose penalties,” Ballesteros said.

Ballesteros was glad to announce that everything’s ready for the big day.

“Kitang tanan prepared na. Magtinabangay ta tanan,” he said.

Meanwhile, Surigao del Norte is gearing up for its grand comeback in this year’s Sinulog celebration after many years of hiatus.

“We are very happy and proud to be able to join the Sinulog this year, as we are showcasing the Lubi-Lubi Festival of the Municipality of Bacuag,” said Gov. Sol Matugas, the first woman governor of the province.

Surigao del Norte has been a grand-slam winner in the free interpretation category in the past, with the winning performances of Bonok-Bonok Festival of Surigao City and Bulawanong Placer of the municipality of Placer, Surigao del Norte.

Matugas and Mayor Sheila Orquina-Cebedo of Bacuag, are confident that Surigao del Norte will be able to take back its niche in this grand festival.

“This is also our way of promoting our province, our culture and our people,” concluded the governor. (FREEMAN)

repost from cebu thread 1/13/11:
Earlier today, a day before their most awaited pageant night, the Sinulog Festival Queens, sported their complete costumes and strutted out their stuff for the ever-discriminating eyes and cameras at the Northwing Atrium of SM City Cebu.

The search for the Sinulog Festival Queen started in 2003. A Festival Queen is the lead dancer of every participating contingent in the Sinulog Grand Parade. The competition is a pageant that is not just all about beauty, but also of brains, skills, and confidence. This is a tribute to the hundreds of lead dancers who made the past 30 years of Sinulog very successful.

This year, will a Cebuana finally be crowned as the “ultimate” Sinulog Festival Queen? (Ever since the conception of the Sinulog Festival Queen competition, out-of-towners always bagged the crown) Watch out as the Sinulog Festival Queen Competition 2011 finally happens tomorrow, 7pm, at the Cebu City Sports Center.

Meanwhile, here are photos of each festival queen in their colorful costumes:

(PNA)

Cebuana crowned Festival Queen 2011
1/16/2011 / Correspondent Fatrick Tabada, Cebudailynews

AFTER eight years of Cebu hosting the Sinulog Festival Queen contest, the title was finally won by one of its own.

Sixteen-year-old Steffi Rose Pearson Aberasturi, lead dancer of the Lumad Basakanon of barangay San Nicolas, Cebu City, bested 19
other candidates from the Visayas and Mindanao.

In Friday’s judging at the Cebu City Sports Center, the third-year high
school student showed that poise was just as important as graceful dancing.

She tripped during her final ceremonial walk and almost fell on her knees, caught off balance with the large, gold cape that unfolded
behind her like wings.

She quickly got on her feet, flashed a wide smile and carried on, to
the applause of the crowd.

“I'm very thankful to the Sto. Niño. I think what makes me stand out
is my confidence,” she told CEBU DAILY NEWS minutes after she was crowned Festival Queen.

Aberasturi, a sudent of the San Roque Child Development School, wore a blue-violet gown with gold designs.

Vince Escario, chairman of the search committee, said that with 20 candidates, this year’s was the biggest search for the Festival Queen
since the contest started eight years ago, and the first time a Cebuana won the title.
Escario hosted the program with Miss Cebu 2008 Elizabeth Maynard.

Each contestant, the lead dancer of their contingent performed for
two minutes with their troupe, followed by their final walk in festival gowns.
Aberasturi also won special awards as Miss SM, Miss
Photogenic, Miss Mendez Medical Group and Miss Samsung.
She took home P50,000 cash and a Samsung 21-inch LCD TV.

Jey Ann Avenido, a 17-year-old Hospitality Management student of the University of San Jose-Recoletos, of Daanbantayan’s Tribu
Kandaya, won first runner up and was adjudged Best in Festival Costume, Best Solo Performer and Best Opening Production Number.

Barbette Joanne Badocdoc of Leyte’s Pintados Festival, won second runner up; Phoebe Corinne Pataytay, of Lahug Elementary School,
third runner up; and Denice Marie Caminade, of Talamban, fourth runner up.

Among those in the audience were Mayor Michael Rama, Rep. Tommy Osmeña and San Juan Rep. JV Ejercito.

'Discipline, drive make Tangub champions'
1/15/2011 By Jemarie Jane Augusto, Correspondent/ CebuDailyNews

Joining the dance troupe of Tangub City, Misamis Occidental is a status symbol of sorts.
It makes one part of the “elite” youth groups in that Mindanao city,
says Emilio “Junie” Pascual, choreographer of the Sinanduloy Cultural Group.

Dangle that and the promise of a free college education, and you have the raw material of a Sinulog champion.

The Tangub contingent which performs tomorrow in Cebu City has
been bagging the first prize in the Sinulog-based dance category
since 2002.

Sinanduloy broke the pattern only twice by placing second in 2004 and 2008.

This year, said Pascual, the dance will focus on the basic concept of
dance as worship. Props and backdrop will be simple, and costumes
will have “muted” colors of gold and some red.

He said they aim for the spiritual upliftment of the audience by
showing the significace of the child Jesus in their lives.
It will be the “simplest concept” in their 10-year record but the dance
steps will be “the most difficult” said Pascual, their choreographer from the beginning.

“The power will be in the dance, not the props,” said Pascual, who is
from Mandaue City and a faculty member of the University of San
Carlos, where Tangub's former mayor Jennifer Wee-Tan graduated.

This time, the lead dancer will not carry the Sto. Niño in her arms.
Instead the icon will stay in the altar, a decision Pascual said is “very
risky” in terms of dance impact, considering the usual style of rival
contingents, but hopes the contest judges will appreciate the
devotion and sincerity of the dance.

Jade Charmaine Manago, 18, the troupe's Festival Queen is the
reigning Miss Tangub City 2010.

“I am not a dancer myself, but I will give my best,” she said.
Tangub starts planning the concept right after the end of every Sinulog.
Pascual said that when he sees the sports complex empty and silent,
after the Sinulog, an idea already emerges. He starts building with that.

Auditions began last October 2010 for a cast of 100 dancers.
Warm-up exercises started in November to introduce basic dance steps.

With a budget of almost P3 million, the Mindanao contingent has
spent for housing youth dancers since the Christmas break to focus on rehearsals.

Pascual said he saw the determination of the children. The students
went home only on Dec. 24 and 25 in order to have more time to practice with their peers.

“Discipline,” said Pascual is a main factor behind the Sinanduloys' award-winning performances.
That and the drive to get a college education.

Dance troupe members are given scholarships in the Tangub City
College, a big opportunity as only a few can afford to go to college on their own.

Some alumni members who have become successful in their fields
come back to join the troupe just to offer a dance for the Sto. Nino.

Tangub plans to publish a book of testimonies from alumni members
in the past 18 years and how the dance troupe helped them in their life.

PLACER, TANGUB WIN
Police: 3.5M people watch Sinulog Grand Parade despite rain
1/17/2011 By Fatrick Tabada and Edison delos Angeles, Correspondents, CDN

Dancers fell on the rain-drenched stage. A French national slipped
from the grandstand stairs.

But these didn't dampen the spirit of the millions of Cebuanos and
tourists who converged at the city streets and at the Cebu City

Sports Center to watch the Sinulog Grand Parade.
Organizers and police officials declared the Sinulog festivities
yesterday a success as the rain didn't stop the 3.5 million spectators
from enjoying the Grand Parade either on the streets or inside the sports center.

The rain also didn’t stop the dancers from giving their best.
It was a back-to-back victory for the two top performers in the
Sinulog Grand Parade, which managed to defend their crowns in this
year's Sinulog competition.

Tribu Himag-ulaw of Placer Masbate won the first place in the Free
Interpretation (FI) category while Tribu Sinanduloy of Tangub City
bagged the top prize in the Sinulog-based category.

In the FI category, Tribu Buyoganon of Albuyog, Leyte won second
place while children from the Mabolo Elementary School won third place.

The returning contingent from the northern municipality of
Daanbantayan won the fourth spot in the FI category in this year's
grand parade while the fifth spot went to the Talamban Elementary School contingent.

Mabolo and Talamban contingents also won the third and first place
respectively in the Sinulog sa Kabataan sa Dakbayan held on Jan. 9.

Consistent winner, Tribu Basakanon of Basak San Nicolas failed to
take the top five spot in this year's Sinulog.

Other winners in the Sinulog-based category were Abellana National
High School, 2nd place; City of Carcar, 3rd place; Bayawan City, 4th
place; and City Central School, 5th place.

A total of 143 contingents – dance contingents, higantes, floats and
pupetteers - competed in yesterday's Sinulog grand parade.

The Grand Parade started late.

Instead of 9 a.m., it kicked off at 10:30 a.m. after the pontifical
Mass officiated by Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma.

While Rama spoke to formally open the Grand Parade at 10 a.m.,
President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino arrived at the Cebu City Sports
Center. It was his first time to watch the Sinulog since he was elected president.

Aquino stayed at the grandstand VIP section for an hour and a half to
watch the opening performances by the Cebu City government
dancers and the Cebu provincial government contingent led by Gov. Gwen Garcia.

He stayed on to also watch performances by competing contingents.
“This festival, as we are all proud to note, is distinctly Cebuanos and
it also gives me pleasure as always to visit your island province,” he said in a brief message.

Aquino left the sports center about 11:30 a.m. It then started to drizzle.
The wind then turned cold. But the people stayed on.

A French national slipped from the stairs of the grandstand about
12:30 p.m., according to the report received by the Office of the Civil Defense.
Morgan Fararon, 20, was brought to a private hospital in Cebu City and was said to be in good condition.

Fararon, who hailed from Paris, was said to be on his way down
from the spectators bleachers of the grandstand when he slipped. He
and his family arrived in Cebu on Saturday night to watch the Sinulog.

At the grand stand stage, performers from Talisay Elementary
School opted to take off their slippers while dancing to prevent from slipping on the wet stage.

The downpour continued until afternoon while the best of Cebu performers were on the grandstand stage.

The backdrop used by the San Nicolas Elementary School was
soaked in the rain about 1 p.m. The rain tapered a bit until late afternoon.

Two dancers from Sabang National High School in Danao City slipped
on the wet stage. But the dancers stood and continued dancing.
Still, the performers gave their best mindful of the drizzle.

The Grande Parade ended with an elaborate, 30-minute production
number that centered on the Chinese influences of Cebu. Amid the
backdrop of a pagoda, the finale number was impressive with dragon
dances, acrobats, Kung Fu trainees, among others. Rep. Rachel
“Cutie” del Mar of Cebu City’s north district, in fuchsia satin robe with
long kimono sleeves, appeared on stage as a Chinese empress.

Just as the presentation dance was about to start, it started to
drizzle again. Then lights inside the oval were turned off leaving the
different colored lights on the stage on.

Despite the rain, yesterday's Sinulog was a success, said Ricky
Ballesteros, Sinulog Foundation Inc. executive director.

The costumes used by contingents this year were more colorful while
the Sinulog beat was given a modern flare since the beat was faster
and more festive, he added.
“It was very successful. The people are enjoying,” Ballesteros said.

Ela Comahig of Pag-asa Mactan said it rained the entire Cebu island
and some parts of the Visayas and Mindanao.
Comahig said raining was a result of the thick clouds due to the cold front.

Mayor Michael Rama also noticed the people poured into the streets
to watch and take part of the Sinulog unmindful of the rain.
“Ang mga taw, ma dancer or spectator man naa gihapon. Bahala na
ang uwan diha. Mao na ang magic ni Sr. Sto. Nino (The people,
whether they are dancers or spectators, they were still there and
didn't mind the rain. That is the magic of Senior Sto. Niño),” said
Rama, who was also drenched as he went around the routes of the
Grand Parade to monitor the progress.

The police said the people who packed the sidewalks and steamed
into the streets were bigger compared to last year.

Senior Supt. Melvin Buenafe, Cebu City police director, pegged the
number at 3.5 million, two times bigger than the 1.5 million who
watched the festivity last year.

He said the crowd could have reached to 4 million if not because of the rain.
The people converged at P. Del Rosario and Osmeña Boulevard going
to Leon Kilat Street, Fuente Osmeña Rotunda, and corner Gorordo
Avenue and General Maxilum Avenue.

Buenafe also noticed that there were fewer incidents of petty crimes
this year compared to the previous years. He, however, didn't give any figures.

“Every year, uwanon man gyud ta pero dili hulga ang uwan (it always
rained but rain was never a threat. Rain or shine, magpadayon ta (we would continue),” he added.

But he added they would be forced to transfer the performances on
the oval's rubberized track had the rain continued.

In 2009, he said they had to transfer the performances on the
rubberized track after dancers started to slip on stage due to the downpour.

Yesterday, , Ballesteros said they didn't have to transfer the
performances on the rubberized track because the rain later tapered into a drizzle.

Since they already anticipated that it would rain, the organizers had
come prepared. They had organized “mop boys” who would wipe
the stage before every performance.

It’s ninth win for Tangub City
1/17/2011 By Fatrick Tabada, Correspondent, CDN

It was their dance, not their props, that won for the Sinanduloy
Cultural Troupe of Tangub City — its ninth victory in the Sinulog
based category — in yesterday's Sinulog Grand Parade at the Cebu City Sports Center.

“Very simple, classy, polished production. Their choreography wasn't
complicated but it relied on varied formation,” said Nestor Jardin,
chairman of the Sinulog judges for free interpretation and past
president of the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP).

Sinanduloy choreographer Emilio “ Junie” Pascual earlier said their
presentation focused on dance as a form of worship.

“The power will be in the dance, not in the props,” he told CEBU
DAILY NEWS.

Yesterday's victory was Tangub City's ninth since they joined in
1994, making them a record holder for the most wins in the Sinulog
Parade history.

The dancers wore costumes with muted colors fo gold and some red.

In their performance, Tanggub City showed 10 different images and
names of Sto. Niño like the Sto. Niño Pasion de Armadura, in 10
different 20 footer walls, which also served as their main props.

Their female dancers clad in gold Filipiniana held golden and red
colored fans while the male dancers wore barongs with yellow ruffles
and golden hats.

Near the end of their routine, a glass altar of the Sto Niño was
shown at the middle of the 10 images.

Sinanduloy also clinched the best in street dancing award and best in
musicality.

“They have really mastered the art of street dancing “ said Lord
Vargara, chairman of the street dancing category.

In the free interpretation category, Tribu Himag-ulaw, Placer Masbate
won their second championship in a row.

“The total production was of the highest level and the interpretation
was perfect. A fantastic showcase of excellence,” said Josefina
Guillen, who chairs the free interpretation.

Tribu Himag-ulaw's theme focused on thanksgiving for abundant harvests.

The violet costumed dancers lined up eight alleys of rice terraces,
with each alley topped by one dancer, drawing cheers from the crowd.

Tribu Buyoganon, Abuyog Leyte placed second in the free
interpretation category.

The Tribu Buyoganon troupe got a standing ovation from the crowd
when, dressed in yellow-gold bee costumes, they portrayed the
death of a Queen Bee, who was resurrected by the Sto. Niño. They
won Best in Costume.

Winners of the Sinulog-based category and free interpretation won P500,000 each.

The Sinanduloy troupe will take home P1 million with the other half
won from the street dancing category.

Abellana National School, which performed a nativity theme, was
second to Sinanduloy in the grand parade category.

At least 12 out-of-town contingents joined this year’s grand parade
compared to five contingents last 2010.

Mayor Michael Rama said this year's Sinulog Grand Parade is more
colorful with contingents being more creative in their presentations.

Dancers shed ‘tears of joy’ at event’s end
By Justin K. Vestil and Rebelander S. Basilan
Monday, January 17, 2011, SS-Cebu

SOME dancers could not contain their emotions after performing on stage in yesterday’s Sinulog grand parade.

After Lanao del Norte’s contingent performed, Marthy Bayron, one of its dancers, left the stage with tears in his eyes.

“Tears of joy,” said the 17-year-old dancer of his emotional outburst. His group received a resounding applause from the audience.

“We offered the dance to the Sto. Niño,” he said, grateful that his sacrifices paid off. “We spent sleepless nights and less time with our families for this.”

Like Bayron, Maria Precilla Mae Cenas of Tangub City’s Sinanduloy Cultural Troupe was sobbing as her group left the stage.

“I’m very happy. We’ve made many sacrifices, like being absent from school. But we didn’t mind them because we’re doing this for the Sto. Niño,” said Cenas, 15, whose group was the last to perform.

Winner of last year’s Sinulog Grand Parade, the Sinanduloy Cultural Troupe has won the contest several times. But for Cenas, being able to offer a dance to the Sto. Niño was what mattered.

“It’s up to Him,” she said when asked if she thinks they will win again this year.

Dancers of Tribu Himag-ulaw, the contingent of Placer, Masbate, were shouting in joy after performing on stage.

Hearing the people cheer and clap their hands as they performed made her happy, said 16-year-old Sakura Suzuki.

“Our purpose here is not to compete,” she said. “It’s to offer a dance to the Sto. Niño.”

They enjoyed the grand parade, despite the rain that left them drenched, she said. “We had fun. The rain made us more energized.”

Moments after they performed, dancers of Tribu Buyogaynon, the contingent of Abuyog, Leyte, were still in disbelief.

Their dance presentation evoked a standing ovation from the crowd, including Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma.

“It was unbelievable,” Rick Gervoso, 20, one of the dancers, said. “We have improved so much, and we owe this to our mayor, who is very passionate in helping us.”

“That dance was for the Sto. Niño. And we are happy to have entertained the crowd,” she said.

Barbie Roa, a 12-year-old student of the Mabolo Elementary School, could not hide the pride she felt after their well-applauded performance.

“I’m very proud of myself. We practiced every day for this,” said the first-time Sinulog dancer.

Cecerez Mireballas, 15, was feeling the same.

“We were nervous at first, but no one made a mistake so we’re very proud and we enjoyed so much,” said the young dancer of South Cotabato’s Surallah Cultural Troupe.

The dancers from the Basak-Mandaue Elementary School who joined yesterday’s street dancing stayed energetic despite the weather.

“Taas kaayo og fighting spirit ang mga bata, bisag nga halos mura nami’g mga basa nga iring tungod sa uwan (These kids are in high spirits despite the rain),” said Anna Avi Rocales, head of the production assistants of the Basak-Mandaue contingent.

Rocales said the kids, mostly 10 to 12 ears old, ignored the rain, focused on their performance and had fun.

maski dinhi sa Cebu mismo, cebuano spoken in METRO CEBU is slightly different from those in CEBU PROVINCE. Even in the province I could still hear people use 'L' instead of the modern (Metro Cebu) 'W' e.g. ulan and uwan.

For Next Year: Sinulog Foundation eyes robotics theme
By Jessica Ann R. Pareja and Gregg M. Rubio/FPL (The Freeman) Updated January 18, 2011 12:00 AM

CEBU, Philippines - After the successful Chinese-themed Sinulog 2011, the Sinulog Foundation Incorporated is thinking of a futuristic theme next year.

Ricky Ballesteros, SFI executive director, said they are thinking of putting a modern touch for the Sinulog 2012.

“So next year will be more on robotics and the likes. But that is the initial plan, of course we have to finalize that,” he said.

SFI deviated from the conventional Sinulog celebration this year by choosing a Chinese theme to pay tribute to the Chinese community in Cebu.

The tribute was more emphasized during the 30-minute Grand Finale last Sunday which combined the Chinese and Cebuano cultures through songs and dance drama.

Ballesteros said they will also start thinking ahead of the design of the stage to fit the ‘futuristic’ essence that they want to highlight.

The sports center oval will be rehabilitated starting this summer. Balleteros said the rubberized oval already needs to be rehabilitated as it is already battered through the years of use especially during Sinulog.

When it is fully rehabilitated, Ballesteros said that they have to seal the whole oval with thick plywoods for protection.

The sports center will remain the Sinulog venue until the SFI finds a bigger site for the festival that is attracting more and more tourists every year.

This year’s Sinulog winners received their trophies and cash prizes yesterday afternoon during the awarding ceremony at the Cebu City Sports Center where they were also asked to repeat performance.

Winners of the Sinulog Based and Free Interpretation categories each received cash prizes of P500,000 for the champions, P300,000 for the second placers, P200,000 for the third placers, P150,000 for the fourth placers and P100,000 for the fifth placers.

The best in costume awardees each received P100,000 while the best in musicality awardees got P50,000 each.

Sinulog 2011 grand champions Sinanduloy Cultural Troupe of Tangub City, Misamis Occidental and Tribu Himag-ulaw of Placer, Masbate together with the rest of the winners once again wowed the crowd of their spectacular presentation.

Barry Luche, choreographer of Tribu Himag-ulaw, which won the Free Interpretation Category, said that their town officials planned a grand treat for the whole team including the dancers, props men and crew. They are leaving the city tonight but they have planned a city tour before going back to their town.

Masbate Governor Rizalina Seachon-Lañete, after winning the grand prize, vowed to transform the reputation of their place from being known for political killings into a peaceful province and a tourist destination.

“Kalamboan gayud sa Masbate ang among ginahangyo sa Sr. Sto. Niño,” Lañete said over Bantay Radyo yesterday morning.

Tangub City Mayor Philip Tan, delegation head of Sinanduloy Cultural Troupe, said they will go back to the Basilica del Sto. Niño Basilica and to the shrine of Pedro Calunsod to offer thanksgiving before going home.

Back home, they will also offer a thanksgiving mass and will perform again before their own people.

“We want to share to our own people our success here. We are very happy to become the new record holder,” Tan said.

Tangub City is now Sinulog’s record holder for having the most number of championship wins. It is their ninth championship in the Sinulog Base category but they have also championed in the Free Interpretation category the first time they joined in 1994.

Tan said that their victory is probably the fruit of their commitment to Youth Development.

Members of the Sinanduloy Cultural Troupe are scholars of a one-year youth development program of Tangub City.

Tan said that their members are not only trained for Sinulog but also in other fields of cultural arts.

Tangub City and Placer successfully defended their crowns last year but it was the first time that Cebu’s Lumad Basakanon did not place in the main competition.

Josefina Guillen, chairman of the board of judges for the FI category, said that they are saddened by the performance they saw with the Basakanon of Barangay Basak San Nicolas that used to be in the top five of the competition.

“I have seen the height or the success of Basakanon and I feel sad of what we saw. They have deviated from the usual routine and they are trying to find a different way but it was not done well,” Guillen said.

Nestor Jardin, one of the judges, said that they appreciate that the choreographers of the group attempted to reinvent their style as the group might have realized that they have to show the people something new.

“When you reinvent, it’s very difficult. So we have to give them time,” he said.

Other SB winners include Abellana National School, Bayawan City’s Tawo-tawo Festival and Cebu City Central School. The best in musicality and best in costume award in the SB category went to Tangub City and City of Carcar respectively.

Other FI winners are Buyoganon of Abuyog, Leyte, Tribu Mabolokon-Mabolo Elementary School, Tribu Kandaya-Daanbantayan Cebu and Talamban Elementary School. The best in musicality and best in costume awards in the FI category went to Tribu Himag-ulaw and Tribu Buyoganon, respectively.

Tangub City also ranked first in the Street Dancing Category followed by the Province of Lanao del Norte: The Land of Beauty and Bounty and Lumad Basakanon.

Street Dance top scorers received P500,000, P300,000 and P200,000 respectively in cash prizes.

On sight décor winners are Bangko Central ng Pilipinas (first), PLDT Co. (second) and Abellana National School (third).

The best three in visual merchandising are Elizabeth Mall (first), Gaisano Main (second) and Gaisano Country Mall (third). (FREEMAN NEWS)
