Who is Fe GingGing Hyde and why did she win best actress?
By: Bayani San Diego Jr.
Philippine Daily Inquirer
May 26, 2011 ; 7:38 pm
http://i638.photobucket.com/albums/uu101/blueleo101/Ozamiz%20city/FE_GING-300x168.jpg

FE GINGING Hyde shaved her head for “Sheika.”
She can very well go down in history as the first Urian best actress named GingGing —joining the league of Nora, Vilma and Sharon.

Surely, Fe GingGing Hyde —who bested awards favorites like Jodi Santamaria, Laurice Guillen and Meryll Soriano for the top plum—came in totally from the cold.

But her work in Arnel Mardoquio’s “Sheika” was so powerful that the country’s finicky critics simply couldn’t ignore her, even if most mainstream industry insiders have no idea who she is.

“To win the same award won by Nora Aunor, Vilma Santos and Sharon Cuneta is overwhelming,” she said.

Fe GingGing, a Dubai-based Filipina singer, self-deprecatingly described herself as a “wife and mother—my full-time job.”

Her being a singer, actress and indie film producer (of “Sheika”) are just “hobbies,” she told Inquirer Entertainment in an e-mail interview.

(She wasn’t able to attend the awards ceremony last week because she was in Dubai, taking care of her family.)

She portrayed a liberated Muslim congresswoman in Mardoquio’s similarly Urian-nominated “Hospital Boat” last year, but “Sheika” is her first full-length film.

She seemed undaunted even if the role “was very challenging, especially for a first-timer,” she confessed.

In “Sheika” she plays Bai Fatmawatti, a mother pushed to madness and violence after the brutal murder of her sons in war-torn Mindanao.

To prepare, she took a three-day acting workshop with teacher Gabby Fernandez. She went to great lengths to perfect the part—including shaving her head.

Transformation

It was a complete physical transformation, she recalled: “I needed to lose 20 pounds in five weeks. Exercising and crash dieting weren’t enough. “I took slimming pills … my blood-sugar [level] went on a roller-coaster ride. I also stopped plucking my eyebrows and quit using body cream for weeks.”

Before cutting her hair, she dyed it black. “My daughter and husband thought I looked horrible,” she said. “I also used Perla detergent soap on my hair. It was effective because my hair became coarse and dry.”

Then Mardoquio asked Fe GingGing to shave off her hair.

Immersion

“I thought, ‘No way!’ But as a producer, I also understood why. It was unusual and would help the film.”

She immersed herself in the Davao indigent community for three months, too. “I slept on the sidewalks with streetchildren for a few nights. I went to the Bankerohan vegetable market at 3 a.m. to study my character and her surroundings.”

She also visited a mental facility. “At first, I was nervous. But on my second visit, I was talking to the patients like they were long-lost buddies,” she recalled.

She met Nanay Clarita Alia, the real woman who inspired “Sheika,” at the film’s Davao premiere last August.

“Before the shoot, I Googled her and read all the reports on her and her children,” she related. (Nanay Clarita’s two teenaged sons were killed by death squads.)

When she finally met Nanay Clarita, she got goose-bumps. “She also kept a diary and until now holds on to her sons’ shoes and slippers. I spent some time with her before I returned to Dubai. I wanted to make sure she has enough medicine to last her six months.”

She hailed Nanay Clarita as a “survivor.”

All in all, she summed up her “Sheika” journey as “unforgettable.”

Her director believes that Fe GingGing’s musicality helped her cross over to acting. “Singing should come from the heart kasi. Each song has a story and singing is like acting in a three-minute short film. Being a dancer also helped in [giving me] rhythm and timing,” she explained.

Even before winning an Urian, she already has other indie films in the works—including Mardoquio’s “Crossfire” (for which she had to gain weight).

She feels strongly about championing indies: “I’ll do it for free. We all should encourage good, quality films, whether they come from Luzon, Visayas or Mindanao. It’s not just a waste of time to support shallow and lousy films; it’s also degrading.”

Barangay Simasay Road Concreting
http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5189/5761013634_2e81e4fdb4.jpg

A 300 meter linear meter road concreting project will link Barangay Simasay to other barangays of the city. Hopefully to be finished by the end of May, this project is Mayor Philip Tan’s fulfillment of his promise to the barangay constituents to provide basic services such as this road. Mayor Tan advised the barangay folks to take good care of this road since it is their link to the city proper which will facilitate the transport of their products and their children going to school will no longer endure the rough ride over a slippery, muddy and very rugged road.

MATHS
High school students from Kimat and neighboring barangays of Baluc, San Antonio and Taguite do not have to walk far to attend high school beginning School Year 2011. Mayor Alfonso D. Tan High School (MATHS) will rise from a 1.8 hectare lot which the City Engineering Office had started to level. This is one of the priority projects of Mayor Philip Tan to provide basic social services to the barangay constituents of Tangub City.

Isabela Alcogas nagpaabot sa 30 ektaryas nga conversion
Posted by OBRAMAESTRA Monday, May 30, 2011, MH on line

Posted by OBRAMAESTRA Monday, May 30, 2011 ; MH online

(NEPTALIE BATOLENIO)

(NEPTALIE BATOLENIO)

MisOc to launch anti-smoking campaign
Posted by OBRAMAESTRA Monday, May 30, 2011
MALINDANG HERALD ON LINE

AT LEAST 250 Filipinos die each day, yes, each day, or about 90,000 a year, from smoking-related illnesses, cardiovascular, pulmonary, metabolic diseases, and cancers, especially lung cancers. In Malaysia about 10,000, and Vietnam at least 40,000, die annually from tobacco-related conditions. Indonesia’s death toll is the worst: 400,000 a year.

The sad fact is that official global tobacco youth survey has revealed that the “smoking prevalence among Filipino youth had jumped from 15 percent in 2003 to 21.6 percent in 2007,” and extrapolated to go even higher.
The province of Misamis Occidental will be launching a movement in fighting cigarette smoking dubbed as “Cigarettes Are Eating You Alive “campaign.

In a media advisory, Dr. Rachel Micarandayo, provincial health officer said the campaign is to inform the public about the ill effects of smoking.
Saying the campaign shows how cigarettes destroy vital organs of the body governor Herminia Ramiro said it is part of the province’s educational awareness program to help residents of Misamis Occidental the health risks of tobacco use.

The provincial health officers and anti-smoking advocates are set to meet the media on June 3 at Misamis Occidental Aqua marine Park (MOAP), Sincaban, Misamis Occidental to drum up its campaign.
Expected also in attendance is Chayla Marie Beniga, provincial project coordinator Bloomberg Initiative for Tobacco Control.

In 2006, Michael R. Bloomberg, philanthropist and Mayor of New York City, launched a $125 million global initiative to reduce tobacco use in low- and middle-income countries. The Initiative was extended with a new $250 million commitment in 2008. Other funders have also made contributions to the Initiative.

The four major objectives of the Bloomberg Initiative are:
1. To refine and optimize tobacco control programs to help smokers stop using tobacco and to prevent children from starting.

2. To support public sector efforts to pass and enforce key laws and implement effective policies, including taxing cigarettes, preventing smuggling, altering the image of tobacco and protecting workers from exposure to secondhand smoke.

3. To support advocates’ efforts to educate communities about the harms of tobacco and to enhance tobacco control activities that work towards a tobacco-free world.

4. To develop a rigorous system to monitor the status of global tobacco use.

The Bloomberg Initiative to Reduce Tobacco Use is implemented though five partner organizations: the Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Foundation, the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, the World Health Organization and the World Lung Foundation.

In Metro Manila, authorities announced a drive to strictly enforce a smoking ban in public places across the sprawling metropolis.
The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority said that they would deploy policemen and specially trained enforcers across the city of 12 million people to round up violators.

The Philippines has a law banning smoking in public places dating from 2003, but it has largely been ignored in a country where according to surveys 28 percent of Filipinos aged 15 years and over, or 17.3 million people, are smokers.
"We must be very strict in implementing our anti-smoking regulation," agency chairman Francis Tolentino said in a statement.
"We should transform Metro Manila into a smoke-free community."
Those caught are to be fined 500 pesos ($11), which is more than the daily minimum wage in the impoverished country, and those who cannot pay the fine will be made to do community service.
Health advocates have also repeatedly called on the chain-smoking President Benigno Aquino to lead the campaign and quit.

Maricar Limpin, executive director of the anti-smoking lobby Framework Convention on Tobacco Control Alliance Philippines, lauded the intensified campaign.
Limpin said the government should go beyond its campaign and prod congress to pass legislation to raise taxes on tobacco.

Repost from CDO thread...

Region 10 tourist arrivals up 41%, MICE Events 24% (http://www.americanchronicle.com/articles/view/237448)
Mike Banos
June 01, 2011
Growth indicators for 2010 continued to register positive gains for Northern Mindanao´s (Region X) tourism industry with total tourist arrivals rising 41 percent and the number of events in the Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Exhibitions (MICE) sector registering a 24 percent increase compared to 2009.

The 44 percent increase in 2010 of domestic tourist arrivals to 1,439,431 more than offset the 10 percent drop in foreign arrivals, figures from the Department of Tourism Region X office show.

Surprisingly, a 46.81 percent in arrivals from Hong Kong was recorded during the 4th quarter despite fears of a backlash as a result of the Manila hostage crisis in August.

The Ozamiz-Oroquieta-Tangub-Misamis Occidental cluster remained the region´s favorite destination with 45.15 percent (669,873) of the region´s total arrivals, followed by the Cagayan de Oro-Misamis Oriental cluster with 27.36 percent (405,904), Camiguin (19.61 percent; 290,972), Iligan-Lanao del Norte 7.05 percent (104,597), and Malaybalay-Valencia-Bukidnon cluster with less than one percent (12,179).

Tangub City´s December-long Christmas Symbols Festival again proved to the anchor event for the Ozamiz-Oroquieta-Tangub-Misamis Occidental cluster accounting for 45.1 percent or 208,999 arrivals for the fourth quarter.

MICE events hosted by the region rose 24 percent to 5,741 in 2010 with regional events tripling in number from 444 in 2009 to 1,865 in 2010. National events also increased 187 percent to 238 in 2010. However, the number of delegates attending these MICE events dropped 13.27 percent for 2010 (452,144 to 392,144).

The Cagayan de Oro-Gingoog-Misamis Oriental cluster remains the favorite MICE destination, hosting 76 percent (4,336) of the 5,741 events recorded in the region for the year. The regional hotel occupancy rate increased slightly from 64.33 to 66 percent with Cagayan de Oro again registering the highest (80) compared to other destinations in the region.

basin gitangtang para maluag ang dalan.. so it means.. medyo heavy na ang traffic sa ozamis? :D

cor animas st (Aguada), kadtong gibutangan nila ug dagkong imburnal.
