1948 Law says it's Ozamiz, not Ozamis

First posted 11:02pm (Mla time) May 30, 2005
Inquirer News Service

Editor's Note: Published on page A19 of the May 31, 2005 issue of the Philippine Daily Inquirer

OZAMIZ CITY, Misamis Occidental, Philippines --
Now it can be settled.
Based on an authenticated photocopy of Republic Act No. 321 from the National Library records, the correct spelling of this city's name is "Ozamiz."
Vice Mayor Carlos Bernad said with the official record as basis, the spelling confusion that lasted for over 50 years would be finally over.
RA 321 is the law that granted the city its charter that took effect July 16, 1948. It decreed the renaming of the old town of Misamis in honor of the late Sen. Jose Ozamiz, a World War II hero.
Ozamiz, a son of a migrant from Navarre, Spain, served Misamis Occidental as its first governor and delegate in framing the 1935 Constitution.
A native of Jimenez town, Ozamiz was the lone politician from the province to have clinched a Senate seat.

The city council passed a resolution urging all individuals and institutions to spell the city's name correctly.

The debate over Ozamiz
By Ryan D. Rosauro

OZAMIS CITY -- What difference does a single letter make?

If one talks about the correct spelling of this city's official name, that brings one back to an acrimonious debate over half-a-century ago that centered on whether or not to rename one of northwestern Mindanao's oldest and historic towns to give honor to a dedicated public official and Second World War hero.

Almost 57 years after, residents here have yet to agree on whether to spell Ozamiz or Ozamis when referring to its official name.

Since 2001, the local government uses "Ozamiz" as reflected in its letterheads and official documents.

The explanation for such usage is that the city was named after the late senator Jose Ozamiz, a hero in the Second World War.

However, prior to 2001, the local government uses "Ozamis." Many National Government agencies and private establishments continue to do so until today.

Confusion is more evident in the webpage of the local Catholic Church that adopts "Ozamis" when referring to the archdiocese. But it gives its address as in the city of "Ozamiz."

Spelling confusion

Even the news media, with its penchant for spelling accuracy of proper nouns, are at a loss on usage.

However, "Ozamiz" gained currency obviously taking cue of the local government's explanation.

Not only is the spelling confusion a recent phenomenon. Even during the city's infancy period, the then Philippine News Service (PNS) and the Davao City-based Mindanao Times that maintained a Misamis Occidental Bureau then, interchangeably uses "Ozamiz" and "Ozamis."

But based on Republic Act (RA) 321, the law that gives the city its charter that took effect July 16, 1948, the correct spelling should be "Ozamis."

Surprisingly, RA 321 decreed the renaming of the old town of Misamis to give honor to the late senator Ozamiz.

The spelling confusion is fuelled by lack of local awareness of RA 321, and more importantly, the lack of plausible explanation why the last letter in the late senator's surname was dropped and changed to letter "s."

Resty Acapulco, an elder, considers the "misspelling" as just typographical error committed by the Bureau of Printing.

Jose Ozamis

However, former City Administrator Antonio Lago Sr. argues the "misspelling" was deliberate in order to put to rest the acrimony between what can be called "preservationists" and the proponents of renaming then Misamis town in honor of senator Ozamiz.

Accounts related by the late Gonzalo Rosauro II, a local history enthusiast who bore witness to the debates then, supported Lago's view.

The spelling "glitch" aside, this city principally derives its name from Japanese resistance hero Jose Ozamiz.

An Ateneo-educated lawyer, Ozamiz holds the distinction of being the lone Misamis Occidental politician to have captured a Senate seat.

He served the province as its first governor, delegate in framing the 1935 Constitution, then senator in 1940.

During the Second World War, Ozamiz played an active role in the guerrilla movement. On February 11, 1944, Japanese soldiers arrested him in Manila following a trip in Mindanao.

He was detained in Intramuros and later executed along with 29 other guerrilla leaders in La Loma.

Their bodies were discovered in a mass grave some two years after. Doctors identified Ozamiz through his denture. (To be continued)

The debate over Ozamiz
By Ryan D. Rosauro
Correspondent

(Conclusion)

IN A measure to further the remembrance of Ozamiz, Congress passed Republic Act 6738 in 1988, during his birth centenary, declaring May 5 of every year as Ozamiz Day throughout Misamis Occidental province.

Originally, the plan was to rename the entire Misamis Occidental province in honor of Ozamiz.

But widespread resistance by local leaders led proponents to instead consider having the province's queen locality as the hero's name-bearer. And that was Misamis town.

According to Rosauro, the proposition met an even greater resistance from locals who argued the preservation of the town's name as it has very deep historical roots.

Misamis is the province's oldest known settlement. One tale traces its name from the indigenous

DPWH to ‘fast-track’ Mindanao projects (http://www.mindanews.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=7014&Itemid=50)
by Allen V Estabillo/MindaNews
Wednesday, 23 September 2009 22:26

GENERAL SANTOS CITY (MindaNews/23 Sep) – The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has shifted to “fast-track mode” its ongoing implementation of major infrastructure projects under the national government’s flagship Mindanao Super Region project to ensure their completion by next year.

Public Works Undersecretary Bashir Rasuman said such move is based on a directive issued by Malacanang to expedite the implementation of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s state-of-the-nation (SONA) projects, including the Mindanao Super Region initiative, and complete them before the President’s term ends in June 2010.

“We’re on fast-track mode but we made sure that quality and road safety will be given utmost importance,” he said.

Under the Mindanao Super Region or Agribusiness Mindanao project’s infrastructure component, Rasuman said at least nine major projects worth P20.533 billion are currently on track for completion by next year.

The projects, which currently has an accomplishment rate of 44.24 percent, include the Dinagat Island Road Network worth P500 million, Iligan City Circumferential Road 3 worth P363 million, Dapitan-Dakak Road worth P303 million, the Zamboanga West Coast Road worth P3.801 billion, the Awang-Upi-Lebak-Kalamansig Junction in Sultan Kudarat and Maguindanao provinces worth P2.193 billion, Kapalong-Talaingod-Valencia Road in Bukidnon worth P3.615 billion and the Surigao-Davao Coastal Road worth P902 million.

Rasuman said the geotechnical investigation works is now ongoing for the 2.36-kilometer Panguil Bay Bridge project that is worth P4.425 billion.

As of this month, he said they already completed the Hawilian-Salug-Sinakungan Road in Camiguin worth P90 million and the Diosdado Macapagal Bridge in Butuan City worth P2.159 billion.

Rasuman said the implementation of these projects was mainly funded under the agency’s infrastructure funds for Mindanao this year that reached P24.059 billion.

Out of such allocation, he said P20.98 billion or 87 percent went to the highways component, P2.628 billion or 11 percent for other infrastructure and P451 million or 2 percent for flood control projects.

For next year, Rasuman said they have set a budget of some P16.905 billion for the island’s infrastructure projects and P15.263 billion or 90 percent of such fund will go to bridge and road projects.

He added that the flood control component will be getting P390 million or 2 percent and the remaining P1.252 billion or 8 percent will be utilized for other related projects. (Allen V. Estabillo / MindaNews)

Unfortunately, the socialized housing project is not yet ready as of now. We have 18 row houses under various states of completion. Dili pa angay picture. hehe. In the next few months, maybe I could post pictures.

Purok 2 is located about 300-500 meters from the Catholic Church. Woodwind Mansions is in Purok 3, Gango. From the highway, turn left going to the airport.
The only landmark I could think of is the tarpaulin of PGMA and Ebdane.

There's one vacant lot in Gango before you reach St. Mary Seminary if ur going to the airport that has high concrete walls around it. I thought it might be the socialized housing project u r referring to. Di pa makita ang development sa loob kasi. :)

Ozamiz has indeed big potential for housing projects :):) .... because of good geographical location, center for commerce, has well developed seaport and airport, big hospitals and colleges / universities. The MIT along National highway managed by Rene Maglasang still looks the same physically. The other MIT managed by Allan Maglasang recently built classrooms made of plywood and other light materials along the national hiway also, fronting Northwestern Mindanao Institute of Technology (NMIT). i think the main MIT sa sulod sa Bañadero is now closed by PNB or DBP. NMIT, on the other hand offers courses on commercial cooking, international cuisine, etc. It has tie up agreement with MAERSK shipping co. I think, NMIT is also owned by Rene Maglasang. :):):)

Actually di yon imitation. May mga new generation Hino buses kasi ang RTMI ngayon at ang livery na ginagamit nila para dito ay yung sa King Long. Yon cguro ang bus upgrade nila na ginagamit for DPL-ZAM route.

Those are rescued dolphins inside a big aquatic cage in the middle of the sea. mga 8-10 dolphins na yata sila lahat. Ang Vets ng MOAP ang nag-alaga diyan. Nag-release sila ng 1 dolphin sa dagat sa last visit ni PGMA sa Ozamiz this year after mag-scuba diving si PGMA sa MOAP. i forgot the name of the freed dolphin. Nationalistic nga yong name niya hehe May P10,000 reward ang prov. govt kung sino maka-rescue ng sugatan na dolphin. :)

Tangub City observes 'Family Day'

by Roldan A. Ponce

Cagayan de Oro City (25 September '09) -- The Local Government Unit of Tangub through the City Social Welfare and Development (CSWD), celebrated Family Day on September 23.

This year's theme, "Si Nanay, Matatag sa Lahat ng Bagay," explains that whether you are cooking a gourmet meal, ordering food from your favorite take-out place or eating on the go, rest assured that what your kids really want during dinnertime are their parents, particularly the mother.

The activity focused on the family relationship between the parents and children in which family meals are the perfect time to talk to the kids and to listen to what is on their mind.

The program was participated in by some 12 barangays in Tangub.

Each barangay was represented by of 4 to 5 families.

CSWD staff and personnel facilitated the program.

The Family Day was celebrated to encourage parents to eat regular meals with their children as a family.

Research has shown that the more often children eat dinner with their families, the less likely they are to smoke, drink or use illegal drugs, according to CSWD Officer Virgilita A. de los Santos.

National Statistical Survey found that youth from families that almost always eat dinner together were 31 percent less likely than the average teen to use illegal drugs, cigarettes and alcohol, de los Santos added.

One of the activities that highlighted the program was a meal sharing of the kids together with their parents at MC Donald in Ozamiz City.

Filing of certificates of candidacy starts Nov. 20
By Sheila Crisostomo October 08, 2009

MANILA, Philippines - The Commission on Elections (Comelec) issued yesterday the guidelines on the filing of certificates of candidacy (COC) from Nov. 20 to 30 for the local and national elections on May 10, 2010.

In Resolution 8678, the Comelec said starting Nov. 20 up to midnight of Nov. 30, 2009, Comelec offices would be receiving the COCs.

“For those who are going to run for the position of president, vice president and senator, they should file their COC with the Comelec Law Department in Intramuros, Manila,” the commission said in a statement.

Candidates who will run for the congressional districts in the National Capital Region should file their COCs at the office of the regional election director (RED) for Metro Manila.

The office of the provincial election supervisors, on the other hand, would receive the COCs for congressmen of legislative districts in the provinces and for provincial elective posts.

“Comelec election officers designated by the RED shall be receiving the COC for members of the House of Representatives for legislative districts in cities outside Metro Manila, which comprise one or more legislative districts and the COC for city officials of cities with more than one election officer. The COC for local positions in cities/municipalities should be filed with the city/municipal election officer concerned,” the Comelec added.

The resolution showed that the COC must be filed in person.

“No certificate of candidacy shall be filed or accepted by mail, telegram, or facsimile. The authority of the authorized representative shall be in writing and under oath and attached to the certificate of candidacy,” the resolution stated.
