In the beginning of the 1990's, Morocco wanted to update or upgrade it's Air Force. In the beginning, they negotiated with the USA for 24 F-16 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F-16), but that deal was not completed. In 2002, when a war was near with Spain (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spain) because of the little Island of "Leyla" just off the coast of Northern Morocco. Morocco knew that in case of a war, they wouldn't have a big chance of winning it.
Saudi Arabia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saudi_Arabia) wanted to grant to Morocco 12 AH-64 Apache (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AH-64_Apache), with additional financial help but the deal was not completed. The United Arab Emirates, or UAE (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UAE) did also gave financial help to Morocco, to strenghthen it's Air Force.
Luckily, it never came near a war. The Moroccan troops who did occupy the disputed island, were transported back to Morocco, after which the Spanish Air Force and Navy did take over the occupied Island.
From 1998, until 2004 the Moroccan Mirage F-1's did receive new Radar-systems and Navigation/Communication Hardware from France ( MATRA , MICA missiles ).

The Army of Liberation (French (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_Language), Armée de Libération, Arabic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arabic_Language), jayshu-t-tahrīr) was a force fighting for the independence (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Independence) of Morocco (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morocco). In 1956, units of the Army began infiltrating Ifni (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ifni) and other enclaves of Spanish Morocco (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish_Morocco), as well as Spanish Sahara (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish_Sahara) (today Western Sahara (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Western_Sahara)), to claim them as part of Morocco (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morocco). Initially, they received important backing from the Moroccan government. In the Spanish Sahara, the Army rallied Sahrawi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sahrawi) tribes along the way, and triggered a large-scale rebellion (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ifni_War). In early 1958, the Moroccan king reorganized the Army of Liberation units fighting in the Spanish Sahara as the "Saharan Liberation Army".
The revolt in the Spanish Sahara (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish_Sahara) was put down in 1958 by a joint French (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/France) and Spanish offensive. The king of Morocco (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King_of_Morocco) then signed an agreement with the Spanish, as he asserted control over the rebellious southern border areas, and parts of the Army of Liberation was absorbed into the Moroccan armed forces.
Nationalistic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nationalist) Moroccans tend to see the Army of Liberation battles in Western Sahara as a proof of Western Sahara's loyalty to the Moroccan crown, whereas sympathizers to the Polisario Front (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polisario_Front)) view it only as an anti-colonial war directed against Spanish (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spain). There were tensions between Sahrawi guerillas and Moroccan units, and at the end of the conflict, some defections of Sahrawis and instances of fighting between the two groups.[citation needed (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citing_sources)] Sahrawi veterans of the Army of Liberation today exist on both sides of the Western Sahara conflict, and both the Kingdom of Morocco (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kingdom_of_Morocco) and the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sahrawi_Arab_Democratic_Republic) celebrate it as part of their political history. Parents of the founder members of Polisario have all been members of the Army of Liberation, most notably the Father of Mohammed Abdelaziz (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mohammed_Abdelaziz) the president of Polisario (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polisario) and the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, who is living in Morocco and is a member of CORCAS (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CORCAS).

Proposition d'acquisition de 3 hélicoptères CH-47D Chinook (Octobre 2009)

CH-47D Chinook Helicopters for Morocco

http://img26.imageshack.us/img26/5025/chinook.jpg

Air Force News — By US Defense Security Cooperation Agency on October 30, 2009

WASHINGTON: The Defense Security Cooperation Agency notified Congress today of a possible Foreign Military Sale to Morocco of three CH-47D Chinook helicopters and associated parts, equipment and logistical support for an estimated cost of $134 million.

The Government of Morocco has requested a possible sale of three CH-47D Chinook helicopters with 6 (2 per helicopter) T55-GA-714A Turbine engines, 2 spare T-55-GA-714A Turbine engines, 4 AN/ARC-201E Single Channel Ground and Airborne Radio Systems (SINCGARS), mission equipment, communication and navigation equipment, ground support equipment, spare and repair parts, special tools and test equipment, technical data and publications, site survey, U.S. government and contractor technical and logistics personnel services, and other related elements of logistics support. The estimated cost is $134 million.

This proposed sale will contribute to the foreign policy and national security objectives of the United States by improving the security of a major Non-NATO ally which has been, and continues to be, an important force for the political stability and economic progress in Africa.

Morocco needs these helicopters to improve its capability to meet current and future needs for humanitarian missions. Delivery of these helicopters will make it a more valuable partner in an increasingly important area of the world.

The proposed sale of this equipment and support will not alter the basic military balance in the region.

The prime contractor will be The Boeing Company in Philadelphia, PA. There are no known offset agreements proposed in connection with this potential sale.

Implementation of this proposed sale will not require the assignment of any additional U.S. government or contractor representatives to Morocco.

There will be no adverse impact on U.S. defense readiness as a result of this proposed sale.

This notice of a potential sale is required by law and does not mean the sale has been concluded.

Morocco bought 12 CH-47Cs for the Royal Moroccan Air Force. As of November 2008, Morocco has 9 CH-47Cs in operation.[1]

I hope they don't buy the MI-17. And if they want a attack heli they shouldn't buy a Mi-35. Algeria has the South African version Mi-24 SuperHind which is superior to the russian one. If they want russian helis they should either get KA-50 or Mi-28. But Apache would be the best.

I don't really see the need of buying attack Helicopters when you have a decent / good flight of jet fighters !

Because let's face it , our enemy is polizario , a bunch of starving cowards with AK-47s , 80'S tanks and bazookas ! Ithink our army ( with the backing of 20 jets ) would be more than enough to cope with these clowns !

Attack helicopters are for close upfront combat, Air support, neutralization of enemies lighter and less visible defenses.

Jet fighters are more for Combat Air Patrol, controlling the sky ( interception and Escort ), and launching strikes, air support and suppression of enemy defenses from a safe distance ( over 150 km ).

If you are attacking a village ( or a refugee camp ), you are most likely to use an attack helicopter as you air support during the mission for more precise targeting ( The Apache can memorize and lock on more than 300 target at the same time I think ) without having many civilian casualties.

As you can see, they both have their place in any descent army, with 2 different roles, neither can replace the other.

And yes, don't forget that it's cheaper to use a helicopter in a combat than to use a Jet Fighter :

Cost per Flying Hour for an F-16 is approximately $5,000 USD, Rafale $16,000 USD , F-22 $19,000-$40,000 USD, F-15C $17,000-$30,000 USD, Eurofighter Typhoon - $14,000 USD....

Add to that an ~ 18.000$ maintenance cost for every 24 hours of flying, and the risk of damaging or having to replace parts....

So yeah, No, Attack helicopters are just as important, and they are not that vulnerable to shoulder rockets launchers like we see in Call of Duty :p !

http://voxmaroc.blog.lemonde.fr/filescropped/10512_462_347/2010/12/jf-17.1291854690.jpg
