What's so bad about it?

Theres just no reason to build it. Awkward sightlines and such. Trying to be creative but failing miserably. It may be nice, but its stupid.

What's so bad about it?

The awkward shape of the stands leads to some pretty bad views for fans, as seats near the centre face one end, if the action is at the other end, they need to turn a lot to see.

yeah, i don't why everybody hates that stadium... it's actually one of the finest venues in the country.

It is one of the more modern stadiums in the country, opened officially in 2003, though construction was completed in 1998? Anyone have a reason for that?

Despite the bizarre 8-shape (that kind of breaks up the stadium in two Greek theaters) it looks like the seats have a normal orientation. I wonder what the metal construction is for though? A future roof?

You're both wrong. The sightline are ok, beacuse the bowl is actually a normal oval-shaped with an 8 shape outline. Look at this picture, if it had an 8 shape, the first rows would be all at the same height, which it's not the case. The rows that are further away from the field on a satellite view, are also up high. Also, note that the orientation of the seats at the midfield is normal.

Classic argentine incompentence.

Yep, the roof should have been added with the original construction, but it wasn't because of some problem with the argentine customs.
Last year it was announced that roof would be completed in the next years. This would be the final result.

It indeed is a very creative an unique way of "cutting" an 8 shape stadium out of a tree dimensional bowl shape.
That really is very neat.
I love that idea, even though it still isn't exactly optimal in my opinion. but only because of the greater distances between the stands and the pitch that this 8 shape produces.
It sure looks really nice and a little crazy, so I like it. A perfect proof of how very unique a modern stadium can be.

I was gonna ask if it was really an optical illusion based on how the walls are setup. I think that's why most think its crazy. They think of it as two bowls put together when its really just 1 bowl with the walls setup like an 8.

If that is "funny" then you might want to have a look at this one here where Worldcup matches have been held in 2006.

The Zentralstadion in Leipzig:

http://mw2.google.com/mw-panoramio/photos/medium/4324135.jpg

http://www.fussballportal.de/images/wm/1662316.jpg

It was simply just build inside the old stadium. and now it has more than twice the capacity. even though all the fans on the cheap seats outside on the old stands in the second row sadly don't really get see much, which is probably why it hardly ever is really sold out.

Well technically speaking the old Zentralstaion had a capacity of 120,000. The largest stadium in the GDR, Germany as a whole and perhaps even Europe.

But they decided to build a new stadium inside the old one as opposed to an attempt to fully demolish and build anew or to do any form of extensive renovation.

Former time, when the Landhof was build, the field was at the frontier of the town close to the green area around Basel. In the last century, Basel growth around the field and therefore also the old home of FC Basel was embraced.:)

If a playing field has no stands around it, then it doesn't qualify as a stadium; it is just a field, period. Where's the irony or the fun?

Autostade, Montreal

The Autostade (the English name Automotive Stadium was rarely used) was a Canadian football stadium in the Victoriatown neighbourhood of Montreal, Quebec that stood at the north-west corner of the Cité du Havre sector of the Expo 67 site. It was the home of the Montreal Alouettes from 1968-1976, except for a brief period in 1972 when the team returned to its previous home, Molson Stadium.

The Autostade was built in preparation for the 1967 World's Fair (Expo 67) as a venue for several events including the World Music Festival and the Rodeo Show. It was designed by architects Victor Prus and Maurice Desnoyers. With a seating capacity of 33,172, the stadium is best remembered for its odd shape: to allow the stadium to be dismantled and re-erected on a new site if required, the architects employed a segmental structural system comprising 19 independent but linked pre-cast concrete grandstands, each 40 seats wide, arranged around the central field.

The stadium was financed by donations from the five major auto manufacturers in Canada at the time: American Motors, Chrysler, Ford, General Motors, and Volvo.

Beauty is up to your own taste, but I don't think you can judge if it is useful or practical from just looking at images. I guess we better leave that to the architects.

The pavilion stand at Preston's Deepdale.

To be fair Preston North End have never had the benefit of PL TV revenue and have done a pretty good job of developing Deepdale on their limited resources. Three sides of the ground are now modern, if unspectacular and I personnaly think the old remaining stand gives the place some character.

I was lucky enough to visit Deepdale before the modern craze for new identikit stands and before the purge on old stands post Bradford and Hillsbrough. It had one of the most aesthetically pleasing old stands in the country and the roofed terraced ends behind each goal created a great atmosphere.

We may have 'progressed' in terms of comfort and safety, and that's obviously not a bad thing, but we have also lost an awful lot in the process.

The old stand actually has been re-developed now, it suits the rest of the ground but is a tad "Identikit" like. I quite like it as it's different to the other stands, but it's hardly awe inspiring. But then it doesn't have to be!

The Nest at Nowich City FC, circa 1930ish

http://www.doingthe92.com/images/grounds/Headers/U2P498.gif

Ground was built on the side of an old quarry. The Football League effectively forced the club to move as they considered the place unsafe.

This is the same site more recently, the stand in the first picture would have been on the left.

I'm assuming because that end stand is unusual?

isnt that stand meant to act like a drum and amplify sound? Hence the bleachers and not proper seats. Also hence the material that covers it?

I can't understand why American's can't figure to put roofs over at least the stands of their stadiums, especially up north, like Giant Stadium, Soldier Field etc. etc.

We've explained this over and over. Many Americans take offense to these repeated comments because they imply that we are either stupid or don't have the money. There are factors that determine this. And even if some don't there are plenty of retractable roofed stadiums (more in the U.S. nation than European continent) and more domed stadiums here as well.

-Culture
Americans by nature love the outdoors and like to be in the elements whether they be cold, snow, rainetc. Especially football(American) fans. Watch Green Bay, Cleveland or New England play during big snow storms. The stands are full and if you ask the fans, that's how they like it. If you ask Minnesota fans, they want to be outdoors too. in Spain seems to have the same feeling as you don't see roofs all over the place there which may also point to something else. There are exceptions though, which point to something else as well.

-Weather
Our weather is more extreme than Europe's for the most part. In the midwest and southeastern U.S. It simply rains harder and there more outright storms with Tornadoes, lightning, thunder and flooding. A roof for the most part will do nothing for this type of weather unless you are going to enclose the place. We already knew this in 1971 from Texas Stadium(which was oringinally planned to be retractable). Also, when its cold, its cold. What the heck is a roof cover going to do when it 20 degrees F? You're either indoors or out. Then you have the swaths of places that have incredibly beautiful weather in the fall during football season. Lots of sunshine, very blue sky, crisp air. Why would you cover up from this? Especially in a place like Miami or Tampa, Florida? Interestingly enough, the U.S. city with the most European like weather is Seattle, and guess what, they have a retractable roof baseball stadium and a European style roof on their football stadium. Makes sense. Compare that too Green Bay, Wisconsin or Boston, Mass. Among the coldest cities in the NFL. You're gonna get snow and cold or good sunshine late in the season. A roof will help you how in this situation? Contrast with Houston, Texas where it rains hard or is sunshiny. They have a retractable roof. Sunshine on the good days. Closed if it rains hard. A roof like those in Europe will do nothing in a Texas thunderstorm but create a place for downbursts to collect and swirl hard rain to every reach of the stadium. Again, we learned this in 1971 from Texas Stadium.

-Type of sport
Then there's the type of sport. Football was explained. Now to baseball. Baseball doesn't play in the rain so it doesnt It makes sense to only cover the fans. Therefore, some places like Houston or Seattle have retractable roofs, some places play in domes(yuck, yuck, yuck) and most are just open air to enjoy the beautiful spring, summer and fall weather in the U.S. It simply wouldn't make sense to have an audience 'awning'

Personally, I do like roofs and the shade. I once attended a soccer game here (http://img226.imageshack.us/img226/3314/elasaguirre30cz.jpg) and the sun was dreadful. The seats (concrete terraces) were scorching and they took forever to cool down (basically my ass is burning throughout most of the game). Although the stand I was in did have a roof, it did not cover the first few rows (where I was at). The other stands don't have roofs so it must be worse for them.

Here's a nice shot of my home town clubs old stadium. The photo was taken around 1970 about 10 years after they were voted out of the football league;

This is the ground in happier times in the 50's;

http://www.heedarmy.co.uk/content/Image/stadium/rhp6.jpg

This ground was demolished in the mid 70's and the club moved to the international stadium show below;

http://images.icnetwork.co.uk/upl/nejournal/mar2009/7/9/gateshead-stadium-895911340.jpg

Things are now looking up though and the club is doing well again and are 1 division below a return to the football league and have a new ground planned shown below;

i think older football grounds (and stadiums in general) have far more character than newer bowls do nowadays.

mismatching stands that have bits chucked in the corners here and there look so much more unique to each club in my opinion and i dont think there will be half as much of an atmosphere when valencia eventually move into their new stadium...

at the current rate of construction, the new stadium will be regarded as a historic old ground too by the time they move in.

At one end, the Bridgford Stand houses away fans in the lower tier; it is odd because one third of this stand was built lower then the rest, due to a local Council planning requirement to allow sunlight through to the houses in nearby Colwick Road. Opposite, the Trent End, is the most recent addition to the ground.

You also have the corners at Phillips Stadion, which were built for ventilation. Makes me wonder if it can be ridicilously cold to sit in those seats with the wind coming through...

Whats wrong with this stadium? ^^ it's just a stadium with very interesting types of stands form different eras. Notting funny here.

It doesn't have Forest's ground, sadly. The "strangely shaped" end was just an open terrace with the same footprint, and the other end was a covered terrace about half the size of the stand that's now there, although a bit wider.

Also, although Dundee and Dundee United are closer in Scotland, Nottingham Forest and Notts County are the closest in England at 400 yards - but does anywhere have three "organically" located (ie not part of a designated sports complex) stadiums as Nottingham, with the cricket ground just 150 yards from Forest's ground?

http://www.worldstadiums.com/stadium_pictures/north_america/united_states/illinois/chicago_soldier.jpg

Look at the diagonals everywhere!

What were they thinking renovating solider field? the structure was becoming unsafe the walls and floors in the press box were being eaten away by termites there was no room for concessions or luxury boxes. the outside of the stadium isn't great but the inside and all the luxury amenities and don't forget that the view lines were upgraded

It doesn't run the whole length of the pitch, and has a large wedge shape cut out of it due to the housing behind the stand.

^^ Boooh! Cry foul! I disagree!

That's Athen's Olympic Stadium for crying out loud! Only having been built in the 80's (i.e not that far back), without weird stands (i.e it's pretty, more so than some recently built stadiums!).

It was renovated for the 2004 Olympics with a flashy new roof (which compliments it btw, so therefore is harmonious with this "old" stadium as you put it), and general cosmetic alterations like new seats, repainting the whole stadium and two video boards.

Heck, look at their 1996 Olympic bid. The stadium was proposed to be as is, with perhaps the addition of a video screen or two.

If the stadium isn't broke, then why demolish it and build a new one?

Lipstick on a pig? It was never a pig to begin with (when it didn't have a roof). It was nicely symetrical.

Not only in Belgium, by no means! Almost in every country you can find examples of stadiums looking different than desired because of local conditions. Belgian media have informed quite a lot about how they CANNOT move the road that restricts the stadium plot. So why are you so critical about it?
Actually, I think this cut corner is an advantage of this stadium. If it was a closed bowl, it would be nothing to talk about - there are many of these already. Since it's not, it got at least some character. I think the move to leave an open corner was a very fair one and not funny at all.

Yes only in Belgium. Only in Belgium it is impossible to obtain a building permit for a brand new stadium on a different location.

That is the reason Anderlecht has decided to renovate and expand the old stadium as much as possible. And the result is -as you can see above- not funny at all, it is more like a bad joke.

Apart from some diehard fans who do not want to move along, nobody is happy with the current situation.

Same problem in Club Brugge, Antwerp, Standard de Ličge, new Heysel...frustration all over the place.

The problem lies with those houses. They are Grade II listed. To outsiders from England that means they cannot be knocked down without special permission from the government. Basically it means they won't be knocked down. Although Newcastle have these expansion plans it seems very remote given the nature of the road the new stand would need to cross and the money involved to build the new stand. It's very expensive for just a few seats, a shame as Newcastle deserve a 60,000 seater stadium.

They're Georgian (built from 1720-1840) and protected by law so there is nothing the club can do with expansion on that side of the ground. However listings of buildings can be reversed, that is a committee can decide to reverse the protection on a building/buildings. However this is very rare.

So it's long gone now, but the old Dell of Southampton had one heck of a stand behind the goal. The road behind ran at such an angle it was the only way build it.

Basically the same issue, just mountain instead of road, and I give you the "Mircea Chivu" stadium in Reşiţa, Romania:

It has been taken care a bit since that pic, there are plastic seats now:

It still is the commie, poor man's Estádio Municipal de Braga.

But not far away there appears to be another similar stadium which in 2010 still looked... vintage.
